- 0:00Struggle to find cosmetics products in the right shade?
- 0:03This AI-powered technology can help.
- 0:06The robot, made by South Korean cosmetics giant AmorePacific is able to analyze users’
- 0:12skin and create products tailored to their exact needs on the spot.
- 0:19“Initially, I didn’t fully trust it, but after applying it to my lips,
- 0:22I found it suited me well, so I believe it’s trustworthy.”
- 0:27In South Korea's capital of Seoul, this AI-powered makeup manufacturer scans skin
- 0:31using data gathered over 78 years of the company's history, AmorePacific has said.
- 0:38The robot then recommends products from a range of some 205 different
- 0:43skin foundation shades and 366 different lip product colors.
- 0:48Lee Young-jin is an advisor at AmorePacific:
- 0:57“Initially, AI technology is applied to diagnose customers' skin conditions
- 1:02and recommend existing products based on their needs. Beyond that,
- 1:08for more segmented customer needs, we offer a service that allows customers to
- 1:12try the recommended colors, and then make customized products on-site.”
- 1:18Kwon You-jin was recommended a new foundation shade thanks to AI:
- 1:25"Everyone has their own specific skin tone, but usually buy the most common color available
- 1:31over-the-counter. Even though I'm interested in cosmetics, it's not easy to analyze them myself,
- 1:37and it's hard to tell just by looking. But with AI analyzing them for me, it seems more accurate.”
- 1:45Traditionally, cosmetics were chosen through brand recognition, packaging,
- 1:49reviews, and store staff recommendations.
- 1:51But that can offer limited options,
- 1:53and often falls short of meeting individual needs or skin conditions.
- 1:58Now the market for using AI in beauty and cosmetics industries is forecast
- 2:02to more than double - from over $3.2 billion in 2023 to $8.1 billion in 2028.
- 2:10That’s according to analysis provider Business Research Company.
- 2:13This is expected as services expand - including personalized beauty recommendations,
- 2:18virtual makeup artists, and skin analysis and diagnostics.
- 2:22Yang Yong Suk is a principal researcher
- 2:24at South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute:
- 2:32“If the existing method allowed for the release of a new cosmetic product every two months,
- 2:37incorporating this AI technology could enable the release of a new product every week. Combining
- 2:43AI technologies could lower hurdles for cosmetics further because robots and AI
- 2:49would make the decisions and continuously produce new products instead of humans.”
