  1. 0:02hi
  2. 0:02welcome to our soul making a creative
  3. 0:05process
  4. 0:07this is a result of discernment as a
  5. 0:08practicing artist
  6. 0:10it started as a reflective journal
  7. 0:12making
  8. 0:14such as sketching writing composing
  9. 0:17short songs
  10. 0:18spontaneous art making
  11. 0:20it started as exposure immersion and
  12. 0:23interaction in the local community
  13. 0:25and develop into imaging then eventually
  14. 0:28the images are pictures and stories
  15. 0:30evolve into collection of reflections
  16. 0:33so in 2016 with the latte publications
  17. 0:36we produce a creative process art book
  18. 0:40so
  19. 0:41soul making is equivalent to imaging
  20. 0:45and imaging is equivalent to crafting
  21. 0:47images
  22. 0:49so making
  23. 0:50means crafting images but it also means
  24. 0:53crafting movement metaphors
  25. 0:57so
  26. 0:58such as dreams imagining relationships
  27. 1:02spirituality fantasy and their creative
  28. 1:04expressions
  29. 1:05this image here this drawing is a
  30. 1:09self-portrait
  31. 1:10i do this after listening to a sermon
  32. 1:14it took me a while to to use this as a
  33. 1:17material
  34. 1:18but i noticed there's something in it so
  35. 1:22probably this attempt of
  36. 1:25knowing oneself
  37. 1:27also soul making
  38. 1:31soul making is an alternative venue for
  39. 1:33knowing oneself and looking into the
  40. 1:35depth and essence in what we do in our
  41. 1:38everyday lives
  42. 1:41it is a form of crafting stories or
  43. 1:43transforming big moments into images or
  44. 1:45symbols
  45. 1:47this one is a childhood
  46. 1:49experience it's a tombala
  47. 1:53this one i mean this is one of the
  48. 1:55challenging part in transforming bip
  49. 1:56moments or stillness
  50. 1:58is
  51. 1:59how to capture and what to capture in
  52. 2:02multiple picture of events
  53. 2:04or particular experience
  54. 2:06and how to stretch
  55. 2:08these brief moments in or wonderful
  56. 2:10experience into a longer or delayed
  57. 2:12moment
  58. 2:15soul making is also connecting to people
  59. 2:17understanding culture and embodying
  60. 2:19tolerance and peace
  61. 2:22so soul making is going beyond the art
  62. 2:24forms or creative expressions
  63. 2:27soul makings meaning making through
  64. 2:29interaction with people
  65. 2:34let me share a work that took me long
  66. 2:37time to produce this imagery
  67. 2:39it is a poem about
  68. 2:42nature particularly rain
  69. 2:45so uh
  70. 2:46[Music]
  71. 2:53[Music]
  72. 3:13foreign
  73. 3:15[Music]
  74. 3:30i
  75. 3:32[Music]
  76. 3:45is
  77. 3:48[Music]
  78. 4:00[Music]
  79. 4:08[Music]
  80. 4:09ah
  81. 4:14[Music]
  82. 4:21[Music]
  83. 4:22me
  84. 4:33[Music]
  85. 4:39so what are the means of soul making
  86. 4:42can be crafting images crafting stories
  87. 4:45crafting instruments and performances
  88. 4:51this image was a study for imaging
  89. 4:54family roots
  90. 4:56my sleepers are there below the ladder
  91. 4:59i am cleaning the gutter so that when
  92. 5:01rain comes the gutter will not be
  93. 5:02flooded and the water will flow smoothly
  94. 5:05in the tank
  95. 5:07here is our dog molly who barked every
  96. 5:09time i dropped the leaves
  97. 5:11at first i was complaining about the
  98. 5:13cleaning of the gutter but later it
  99. 5:15became therapeutic
  100. 5:17thus the tank reflects that we get water
  101. 5:20from the rain and it took 40 years
  102. 5:21before the public water system reach us
  103. 5:27here um
  104. 5:29a drawing entitled the good samaritan
  105. 5:32appropriated from a biblical story
  106. 5:34but this is actually a
  107. 5:36real experience now
  108. 5:39though the image exaggerated
  109. 5:42but uh it is based on a real event i met
  110. 5:44an accident in davao
  111. 5:47on diversion road nobody helped me
  112. 5:49except the garbage collector i think the
  113. 5:53symbols the text of words
  114. 5:55incorporated in the artwork would
  115. 5:57suggest something
  116. 6:01um
  117. 6:03i know you're familiar with these
  118. 6:05words
  119. 6:06presented in the
  120. 6:08in this particular image or slide
  121. 6:11this work
  122. 6:12is actually
  123. 6:14based on exposure to
  124. 6:16powerpoint presentations
  125. 6:20it is an attempt to use it as a subject
  126. 6:23for a commentary
  127. 6:29also you can also translate
  128. 6:33stories or images or events into using
  129. 6:37sculptures
  130. 6:38or particularly the technique of
  131. 6:40construction or assemblage
  132. 6:44even puppetry making
  133. 6:46your paper waist can be transformed into
  134. 6:49a
  135. 6:50face of a puppet
  136. 6:51even the
  137. 6:53dysfunctional
  138. 6:54webcam
  139. 6:56can be used as the part of the mouth
  140. 6:58an old texture can be used as the hair
  141. 7:02my old pants can be used into a
  142. 7:05cloth puppet
  143. 7:07using rad or using
  144. 7:10or through mar units
  145. 7:14next is crafting instruments
  146. 7:16crafting instruments requires ability in
  147. 7:18determining defining and distinguishing
  148. 7:21sound
  149. 7:22or nodes and pitch and thus the ability
  150. 7:24to manipulate objects
  151. 7:26it can be organic metal plastic or wood
  152. 7:29or a combination
  153. 7:31or you may appropriate ready-made canned
  154. 7:33music
  155. 7:35by manipulating exploring objects
  156. 7:38while you are looking for the
  157. 7:40appropriate sound
  158. 7:43the result is meditative
  159. 7:46it is exhausting but it is also relaxing
  160. 7:50so in between
  161. 7:53somehow silence and rest
  162. 7:57even old and discarded clock
  163. 8:00saw handle cable lock and motor gear can
  164. 8:02be repurposed into a percussion
  165. 8:04instrument
  166. 8:07a fire tree is common in the city
  167. 8:09by just collecting it right before it
  168. 8:11will be taken by nature or land into the
  169. 8:13soil one have to pluck it from the tree
  170. 8:16and wrap it with why to hold the seeds
  171. 8:18inside
  172. 8:20so you can see the slides here from
  173. 8:22soaking of the white strips with water
  174. 8:24thinning clean the strips
  175. 8:27of wine wrapping and
  176. 8:29then you have the artwork
  177. 8:31a percussion instrument well the seeds
  178. 8:33are
  179. 8:34hold or held by the shell
  180. 8:39um here is a
  181. 8:41wind instrument um
  182. 8:44a five note uh
  183. 8:45battle instrument
  184. 8:47so some battles cannot be sold in a junk
  185. 8:49shop so it ended as a win instrument or
  186. 8:51some they broke it or something just in
  187. 8:53the landfill
  188. 8:57the the battles have their own pitch
  189. 8:59producing a wind instrument
  190. 9:01the sound produce up four different
  191. 9:02narratives
  192. 9:04first the sound of the golden galleon
  193. 9:06that passed through the rivers this is a
  194. 9:08superstitious buddhist but
  195. 9:10was able to hear also the sound
  196. 9:14the sound of the buddhion that was used
  197. 9:16as a warning signal during
  198. 9:18the encounter between the government and
  199. 9:21the rebel forces
  200. 9:23so it was used by the rebel forces as a
  201. 9:25warning signal
  202. 9:27the sound of the buddhion in a beach
  203. 9:29the battle is alternative to that you
  204. 9:31know when you put the bottle yeah
  205. 9:34in your ear you can hear the the
  206. 9:36vibrating sound
  207. 9:38and the sound of silence in our place
  208. 9:40after the community abandoned their
  209. 9:42houses after month
  210. 9:44uh after the encounter between governor
  211. 9:46and rebel forces so
  212. 9:48this is what i heard the time
  213. 9:51listening through the bathroom
  214. 9:52silence
  215. 9:55and
  216. 9:56the process here you can see the
  217. 9:58cleaning of the bottles the drying of
  218. 9:59the bottles the soaking of the white
  219. 10:01strips then eventually
  220. 10:03tying the bottles randomly from any
  221. 10:05parts then there you can now produce an
  222. 10:08instrument
  223. 10:11here are some
  224. 10:13recent uh
  225. 10:14exploration of
  226. 10:18a inspired by kalimba
  227. 10:21but the sun actually is
  228. 10:22inspired also by
  229. 10:24a mindanao chun
  230. 10:26of
  231. 10:27just like a kolintang
  232. 10:29but this one there are other parts are
  233. 10:31installed there are pipes there are also
  234. 10:33springs there are also bells
  235. 10:36you can also see the box here i
  236. 10:38installed the psu speaker so it will
  237. 10:41become it's a bit box
  238. 10:44and the other one here is uh with
  239. 10:46uh
  240. 10:48base uh it was actually installed on the
  241. 10:50planchadora
  242. 10:52uh we have the
  243. 10:54sugbahanan uh
  244. 10:58a part of the wiper from the electric
  245. 11:00farm from the heat sink
  246. 11:03a metronome and a water container
  247. 11:08another work is this one and this is
  248. 11:11also a collection of three different
  249. 11:13areas
  250. 11:15the the
  251. 11:16some of the three foods are collected in
  252. 11:18samal
  253. 11:19island
  254. 11:20and sawdust with the
  255. 11:22steepers all sleepers
  256. 11:24and the bottles are taken within the
  257. 11:26city and the only thing i bought there
  258. 11:29is the oi
  259. 11:31from the story near yangorin
  260. 11:34this one is a sound board and this is an
  261. 11:36old
  262. 11:39painting
  263. 11:40and then
  264. 11:42but i was not able to use the camera so
  265. 11:44i take it off
  266. 11:45i
  267. 11:46reverse it and use the back part
  268. 11:49so installed strings metal so by
  269. 11:52touching by scraping you can create
  270. 11:56soundscape
  271. 11:59as i go along
  272. 12:01utilizing visual making as part of the
  273. 12:08culmination of arts application classes
  274. 12:15i was able to
  275. 12:16develop also themes under this so making
  276. 12:19one is indigenous
  277. 12:23these are local improvisation and
  278. 12:24manifestation of resilience and
  279. 12:26creativity
  280. 12:28um
  281. 12:29so
  282. 12:30actually the word indigenous
  283. 12:33i appropriated that from
  284. 12:35indio genius it is a mispronounced word
  285. 12:38of an influence friend of kidnapped that
  286. 12:39he make
  287. 12:41so i think in 2008 i asked
  288. 12:43personally kidlet if i can use it so he
  289. 12:46allowed me
  290. 12:47eventually that related to spinoy
  291. 12:49ingenuity originality identity
  292. 12:52so in this study the indigenous refers
  293. 12:54to the
  294. 12:55initiative
  295. 12:56resourcefulness and creativity
  296. 12:59and the 12 world concept of art
  297. 13:02but now i am using
  298. 13:03indigenous terms for individuality and
  299. 13:05accession to my own exploration
  300. 13:13here is a
  301. 13:15manifestation of three in one concept
  302. 13:18four in one concept everything is there
  303. 13:20in the bicycle
  304. 13:22this is street performing in panama city
  305. 13:26here the next slide is a diy speedboat
  306. 13:29toy in santo mastava delorte
  307. 13:32so it's made of rubber band
  308. 13:34barbecue sticks and a plastic container
  309. 13:37of a powder
  310. 13:41here is an improvised car in a wet
  311. 13:43market
  312. 13:45100
  313. 13:46uh reused materials
  314. 13:51another one is
  315. 13:53an improvisation a motorcycle with no
  316. 13:55metal tank but used an oil container as
  317. 13:58alternative
  318. 14:04another
  319. 14:06dynamic uh
  320. 14:08manifestation of our improvisation
  321. 14:11is
  322. 14:12the bakery
  323. 14:14with the wonderful names of breads and
  324. 14:17biscuits same with the store names and
  325. 14:19so does our children's name
  326. 14:26here is a motorcycle in montevista with
  327. 14:29a makeshift shade
  328. 14:31so it's hundred percent improvised
  329. 14:35here is another example of improvisation
  330. 14:38a tricycle pagadian city
  331. 14:41it was designed that way because the
  332. 14:43cities
  333. 14:44have
  334. 14:45dominated by rolling hills
  335. 14:48here is a tracy cat in osama city with
  336. 14:50calais influence
  337. 14:52they no longer
  338. 14:54use the kalesa so
  339. 14:56the concept colessa was translated into
  340. 14:57the tracy cat
  341. 15:00another thing finding this particular
  342. 15:02post
  343. 15:04is the
  344. 15:05redundancy
  345. 15:08it was trying to please and accommodate
  346. 15:10it it is accommodating texts
  347. 15:14trying to please also the audience
  348. 15:17another part of this making is uh
  349. 15:19looking into
  350. 15:21personal experience or life experiences
  351. 15:24reality so this is an image of a street
  352. 15:27child in pagadian city
  353. 15:30so this image will brought you will
  354. 15:32bring you to somewhere else
  355. 15:34to a certain reflection
  356. 15:37now even waiting is actually a
  357. 15:40powerful
  358. 15:41motivation for you to do something about
  359. 15:44your
  360. 15:45boredom
  361. 15:46so i was constructing paper art while
  362. 15:48waiting for a certain
  363. 15:51for my
  364. 15:53schedule
  365. 15:54for a workshop it is in cotabato city
  366. 16:00wires
  367. 16:02soft sculpture performances is also one
  368. 16:05good explorations by using the overhead
  369. 16:07projector
  370. 16:11another sensitive subject but
  371. 16:14part of the humanities
  372. 16:16accepting or denying death
  373. 16:21here is a
  374. 16:23song
  375. 16:25entire pintura
  376. 16:27so this particular
  377. 16:29funny poem was actually inspired by
  378. 16:33observing the manicurista
  379. 16:36with their conversations with their
  380. 16:39situations
  381. 16:40and so forth so i will demonstrate this
  382. 16:48[Music]
  383. 17:06[Music]
  384. 17:12[Music]
  385. 17:18[Music]
  386. 17:30[Music]
  387. 17:39[Music]
  388. 17:48[Music]
  389. 17:58better than
  390. 18:03[Music]
  391. 18:16so where can we find soul making
  392. 18:21can i mean i appreciate some people who
  393. 18:23can do it
  394. 18:25can do something you know can produce
  395. 18:27art even there it is crowded
  396. 18:30but somehow
  397. 18:32some people can do more in a silent
  398. 18:36space
  399. 18:44[Music]
  400. 19:19[Music]
  401. 19:35on
  402. 19:40so the question is why
  403. 19:43why do we need to engage or
  404. 19:46in soul making on imaging
  405. 19:51to transcend from human to spiritual
  406. 19:53being
  407. 19:55to broaden patience and tolerance
  408. 19:59to heightened sensitivity and
  409. 20:01sensibility towards the environment
  410. 20:04and to connect with god
  411. 20:12so
  412. 20:14here is an image of myself
  413. 20:17with the projection of
  414. 20:19that faith
  415. 20:21that we are alive from the sky
  416. 20:23touches the earth and lets you feel
  417. 20:26the essence of life
  418. 20:29it is not about money and fame but the
  419. 20:32honest and sincerity of what we do
  420. 20:34the time that we devote
  421. 20:36to art
  422. 20:38or artwork our actions will allow us to
  423. 20:40understand ourselves better
  424. 20:43i realized then that the tangible or
  425. 20:45intangible art is there to make us all
  426. 20:48be extra sensitive
  427. 20:51guys
  428. 20:52art is the soul of our nation
  429. 20:55art is the soul of our being
  430. 20:58the core of being human
  431. 21:00so art for me is a realization of time
  432. 21:05soul making
  433. 21:07is an expression of finding peace and
  434. 21:09contentment
  435. 21:11so soul making is to be empty
  436. 21:16so to end this sharing
  437. 21:18here's another
  438. 21:20example of translating nature image into
  439. 21:22a poem
  440. 21:24the song is entitled
  441. 21:32[Music]
  442. 21:42booklet
  443. 21:47[Music]
  444. 22:08so
  445. 22:12[Music]
  446. 22:17[Music]
  447. 22:23my
  448. 22:29[Music]
  449. 22:35so
