- 0:00They copied your business idea.
- 0:02So what?
- 0:03Let them copy your idea, your product,
- 0:05or you know, your video concept, because
- 0:07the easiest way to stop copycats in
- 0:09their tracks is to make shitty stuff
- 0:11that no one wants.
- 0:13No one will copy you.
- 0:16How to stop copycats 101.
- 0:18Uh I see I see this I honestly get I get
- 0:21sent videos all the time. Actually, my
- 0:22team showed me one today
- 0:24um of somebody that you would know
- 0:27um who just lifted a a word-for-word
- 0:30basically version of one of my videos.
- 0:32Um and I just like it's just like
- 0:35it doesn't [ __ ] matter.
- 0:36It's so It's like I can't tell you. It
- 0:38took me probably two, maybe three years
- 0:41um in the beginning of my entrepreneur
- 0:42career where I cared about this, where I
- 0:44used to get really butt hurt about it.
- 0:46And I'll tell you I'll tell you the
- 0:46first one of the most significant times
- 0:48it happened to me. I'll tell you
- 0:50actually I have a bunch of stories, but
- 0:51I'll tell you one really good one.
- 0:52So,
- 0:53when I was 20
- 0:55four, I had my gym and I was in this
- 0:58little gym owners group. And the owner
- 1:02of the group uh posted, "Hey guys, this
- 1:05is the new ad copy that's crushing."
- 1:07And he posted in the group my ad copy.
- 1:10And so I reached out to him and I was
- 1:11like, "Hey man,
- 1:12um
- 1:13kind of like what the hell, dude? Like I
- 1:15mean,
- 1:16okay, I guess you're just giving my copy
- 1:18away, fine, but like at least a little
- 1:20credit would be nice."
- 1:21Um and he said, "You going to really be
- 1:23that petty?"
- 1:25And I was like,
- 1:27"Man, I feel really weird right now." Um
- 1:30and so as a result, we parted ways.
- 1:32Um
- 1:33but the thing is is that
- 1:37I do think that what he did was not the
- 1:38right move.
- 1:39I also think that it doesn't matter.
- 1:42Because whether people in that in that
- 1:44group were going to make money or not in
- 1:45their gyms had nothing to do with my ad
- 1:47copy. It had everything to do with how
- 1:48good they were at business, because
- 1:49everybody who's a loser finds a way to
- 1:51lose.
- 1:52And everyone who's a winner finds a way
- 1:53to win.
- 1:55I'll tell you a different story. Um
- 1:58this is this is many years later. I had
- 1:59a I think I I had I had a I received a
- 2:02cease and desist from a local gym. This
- 2:04is when Jim Walsh was was growing was
- 2:05much bigger. Um
- 2:08and it was a it was a gym owner who's
- 2:09actually from that original group.
- 2:11And he had five locations at the time.
- 2:14And he emails say you know cease and
- 2:16desist with his lawyer saying that I
- 2:17could not use this copy.
- 2:20And uh which first off ad copy is not
- 2:22considered IP FYI. So just
- 2:25big news for you.
- 2:26Which hilarious that the lawyer thought
- 2:28that that would be a good idea. They
- 2:29should probably question themselves. But
- 2:31small time lawyer small time business
- 2:33owners it is what it is, right? Broke
- 2:34people eating broke people.
- 2:35Um
- 2:37I responded back with a screenshot of my
- 2:40first use case of the ad copy because I
- 2:43wrote the [ __ ] copy. I wasn't copying
- 2:45his copy. He had copied my copy. My copy
- 2:47had been spread around the internet so
- 2:49much that people were suing me for using
- 2:51my own copy. He didn't even know that I
- 2:53had written it.
- 2:54And so uh I got one of my all-time
- 2:56favorite emails ever which is the
- 2:58attorney apologize to me
- 3:00uh for his client sending the cease and
- 3:02desist uh because obviously he didn't
- 3:04write it um and I had proof that I had
- 3:06written it because I was like if you can
- 3:07find a date where you posted it before
- 3:08me, let me know.
- 3:10Um and so he went off and [ __ ]
- 3:12himself. Uh which felt really nice and I
- 3:14get to tell the story. But the point is
- 3:16this is that like
- 3:18you are either source
- 3:21or you are looking at the source.
- 3:24Two people can't be source. It is what
- 3:26it is. Either you are the wellspring of
- 3:28the actions that you're taking or you're
- 3:29looking at someone else and trying to be
- 3:30a kind of bastardized diet version of
- 3:32what they're doing.
- 3:34Like
- 3:36and for me whenever you copy you concede
- 3:39first place. And to be clear there's
- 3:41first place isn't for everyone.
- 3:43Basically every other position on the
- 3:45board besides first place is for most
- 3:46people. And so that might be you. And if
- 3:49that's you, dude copy to your heart's
- 3:50desire by all means. But, I prefer to
- 3:53think that I make my content for the the
- 3:56winners or the people who want to win.
- 3:59And if that is you,
- 4:01then you have to start believing in
- 4:02yourself because copying is a form of
- 4:04cowardice.
- 4:06You don't believe in your own skill
- 4:07enough to bet on you.
- 4:10You don't believe that you are good
- 4:11enough to actually do it on your own.
- 4:13I'll tell you a different story.
- 4:15I When I had my gyms, early days, um
- 4:18I saw a competitor who came in, better
- 4:21funded. Um better funded means I said
- 4:23better funded. It They had like 10 or 20
- 4:25locations or something and they had
- 4:26opened a location in my in my market and
- 4:27I had my one gym.
- 4:29And when
- 4:31I looked at their their page, I was
- 4:33like, "Oh, this must be working." And
- 4:34so, I looked at my page that I had built
- 4:36myself and I remember
- 4:39basically cloning their page. I was
- 4:41like, "I'm going to copy their page and
- 4:43run ads to a version of it that's
- 4:44basically similar."
- 4:46When I ran the ads,
- 4:48the conversion rate on the new page that
- 4:49I I spent all this time and money to
- 4:50build was lower than mine.
- 4:53And it was the first and last time that
- 4:56I did that. And I was so ashamed of
- 4:58myself. I was like, "You didn't have
- 5:00enough confidence in yourself and you
- 5:01somehow thought that everyone else had
- 5:02it figured out. No one knows what the
- 5:04[ __ ] they're doing." Like, if you can
- 5:06just make reasonable assumption If you
- 5:08like this video and you're business
- 5:09owner who wants to break through your
- 5:10current revenue ceiling, I just wrote
- 5:11every lesson from scaling 10 businesses
- 5:13past 10 million and three businesses
- 5:15past 100 million into a completely free
