Full transcript
- 0:01Oh, Jennifer? Hi. Hi. Yes, I'm Alex. Hi.
- 0:05I am the social work counselor here at
- 0:07Jacoba University. Why don't you come in
- 0:08and
- 0:09get started, okay?
- 0:10Sure. Thank you.
- 0:11Go ahead and go to the left and take a
- 0:13seat at the very top of the table.
- 0:17How are you today? I'm good. How are
- 0:19you? I'm doing good, thank you.
- 0:22Okay. So,
- 0:25Jennifer, why don't you tell me a little
- 0:27bit about why you're here today?
- 0:29Okay. So, I'm 23 years old. I am a
- 0:32college student. I'm taking 18 credit
- 0:35hours. I work two jobs.
- 0:38And I'm considering taking on another
- 0:41class, so I'm a little stressed out and
- 0:44need to figure out my time a lot better.
- 0:46Definitely, definitely. Okay, is this
- 0:49the first time that you've ever sought
- 0:50out counseling through the social work
- 0:51program? Yes. Okay.
- 0:55So, why don't we go over just a little
- 0:56bit about what we do here
- 0:59as the student counselors here at this
- 1:01at the university?
- 1:03I mean, we can do a range of things. We
- 1:05can cover
- 1:07um
- 1:08stress management, things like that.
- 1:11So, but what we're going to do is we're
- 1:12going to start with our policies here.
- 1:15This is for you to keep and I will Well,
- 1:18actually, not to keep, but I will need
- 1:19it signed back from you for your
- 1:20informed consent. Okay.
- 1:21Okay. Um you can just bring that back
- 1:23next time, but we'll go over a little
- 1:24bit about what it is.
- 1:26It mainly just goes over
- 1:29the policies and procedures here as the
- 1:31student counselors,
- 1:33kind of the relationship that we have
- 1:35with our clients.
- 1:36There is, of course, the policy the
- 1:38confidentiality policy that's in there.
- 1:41That just states that anything that we
- 1:43talk about in here that is strictly
- 1:45between us. It doesn't leave anybody It
- 1:47doesn't leave this room. The only person
- 1:50that would have access to it is myself
- 1:51or my supervisor should they need it.
- 1:54And then, obviously, of course, if
- 1:56there's any talk of harm towards
- 1:58yourself or anybody else, I am required
- 2:00to report that as well.
- 2:01Do you have any questions about that?
- 2:03No, I think it's all here and I can read
- 2:06through this, right? Yes.
- 2:08Okay. Yeah, take your time read through
- 2:09it. If you have any questions, feel free
- 2:11to contact me and we can go over
- 2:12everything. Okay. Okay. All right,
- 2:14Jennifer, why don't you tell me a little
- 2:15bit about yourself?
- 2:17Uh so, like I mentioned, I'm just
- 2:19working the two jobs, um
- 2:22possibly taking on another class, so
- 2:24that'd be 21 credits. Um
- 2:28It's
- 2:29frustrating. I live off campus, so I do
- 2:31need to work.
- 2:32Um
- 2:33How many jobs do you work? Two.
- 2:35Two jobs, wow.
- 2:36Yeah. Okay.
- 2:37Yeah, they're both part-time, don't do
- 2:39very many hours, but it gets me through.
- 2:41Mhm. Um
- 2:43one goes more with my major, the other
- 2:45one is
- 2:46just for work, but
- 2:48uh I mean, I love my major and I like
- 2:51having a house, so you know, that would
- 2:53probably be a good thing to have. Right.
- 2:55But it it just gets stressful on how to
- 2:58situate things. Mhm.
- 3:00And then I get like anxiety about it and
- 3:02panic attack like and then I panic about
- 3:05that cuz I don't have the time to be
- 3:06panicking and Of course. Okay. So. Yeah.
- 3:09So, you said that you said you're living
- 3:11off campus, correct? Are you living by
- 3:13yourself, with parents?
- 3:14No, I do live with my boyfriend, so we
- 3:17split the bills. Oh, okay. So, you have
- 3:19an apartment as well.
- 3:21Okay.
- 3:22Why don't you tell me a little bit about
- 3:23your major?
- 3:24Sure. So, I'm double majoring in social
- 3:27work and Spanish. Okay. Um
- 3:30So, I want to be where you are someday.
- 3:32Great. Very cool. Well, this will be a
- 3:34good hopefully a good experience for you
- 3:36as well.
- 3:39So,
- 3:41let's see.
- 3:43Now, are you um
- 3:45you said that you're working the two
- 3:46jobs.
- 3:48What kind of time Like, how many hours
- 3:50do you work a week? So, for one job, I
- 3:53only work Saturday and Sunday and
- 3:55sometimes on Monday if they need me, but
- 3:57that's 8-hour shifts, so over there at
- 4:00the Max 24. Okay. And then for my second
- 4:04job, I am a disabled or a disability
- 4:07companion. So, I work
- 4:10from Thursday to Sunday and it ranges
- 4:13between 1 to like 5 hours. Okay.
- 4:16Depending just on what we're doing that
- 4:18day. Okay. So, I mainly hear that you're
- 4:20working over the weekends. Yeah. So, is
- 4:22the rest of the time just school?
- 4:25Yeah. Classes, things like that. Okay,
- 4:26so what do you do for fun? Um
- 4:31Well, there's time for fun.
- 4:33Um
- 4:35really in my free time, I feel so bad
- 4:37because my dogs are locked up all the
- 4:38time like in the house, so we go to the
- 4:41park and stuff and I try and get my
- 4:43readings done for class while we're
- 4:44there. Okay. So, I don't I'm really
- 4:47That's one thing I'm really bad about is
- 4:50relaxing. I'm not very good or know when
- 4:53to stop something cuz I'm getting
- 4:55frustrated. So, that's something I
- 4:57really do need to work on.
- 5:00Um
- 5:01I do like to read, but then with so much
- 5:03readings I have for all my classes, it's
- 5:06kind of a
- 5:07killjoy. Yeah. Right. Even though it's
- 5:09something that I like personally
- 5:11reading.
- 5:12Like, my eyes hurt.
- 5:14What kind of stuff do you like to read?
- 5:15Um
- 5:17I like fiction stuff. Like, it'll be
- 5:20random magical mermaids. Okay. Random
- 5:23stuff, right?
- 5:25That makes total sense. All right.
- 5:28What kind of dogs do you have? I have a
- 5:30husky, German shepherd, and a
- 5:31Rottweiler. So, they're massive dogs.
- 5:34Very cool, very hairy, right? That's too
- 5:37fun. Well, that does sound like a lot of
- 5:38fun going to the park with them and I I
- 5:41can see that working perfectly to take
- 5:42your mind off things, can't you?
- 5:44Um
- 5:45So, typically, how much homework would
- 5:48you say that you do during the week?
- 5:50Um so, my Spanish class assigns at least
- 5:53three to like six assignments every day
- 5:56we have class, so that's Monday,
- 5:57Wednesday, Friday. So, that could add up
- 6:00to
- 6:0218 assignments in a week just for
- 6:03Spanish.
- 6:04Wow.
- 6:05Okay. And then, um
- 6:08my other classes, they're not
- 6:11terrible kind of assignments. Like, I
- 6:13can get them done. It's just the
- 6:15readings are a little bit like a lot and
- 6:18they're heavy loads.
- 6:20So, that's often hard to get by. Right.
- 6:23I try and break it up. Like, I have
- 6:24certain days for like certain classes,
- 6:29but I don't feel like I've managed it
- 6:32enough.
- 6:33Like,
- 6:34so when I'm reading a chapter, it's hard
- 6:36for me to sit there and read the whole
- 6:38chapter at once.
- 6:40I get way too distracted and like
- 6:42Right. have to move, but then
- 6:45I
- 6:46continue doing other stuff instead of
- 6:48finishing the chapter. I think that's
- 6:50like my hardest part. I don't know how
- 6:52to break it up throughout my day. Right.
- 6:54So, it's kind of like you start to work
- 6:55on it and then you want to take a little
- 6:57break and then you get distracted, which
- 6:59kind of leads you to further getting a
- 7:01little bit behind, it sounds like.
- 7:03Yeah. Okay. Well, that unfortunately,
- 7:05that's kind of normal.
- 7:07You know, I
- 7:08we There's a couple different ways that
- 7:10you can do it. Like, obviously, a lot of
- 7:12people do like to try to push through,
- 7:15but definitely taking a break to kind of
- 7:16just relax and take it easy and break
- 7:19things up a little bit better is good.
- 7:21So, that's one of the things that we
- 7:22will definitely work on.
- 7:25You know, we kind of teach management
- 7:26skills, time management, breaking things
- 7:28up like that. Um and then, of course,
- 7:31working together with your schedule to
- 7:33get everything taken care of.
- 7:35Why don't you tell me a little bit about
- 7:37home life? How is that going for you? Do
- 7:39you live by yourself here? Are you
- 7:41Um no, I do live with my boyfriend, but
- 7:44our schedules are like opposite. And
- 7:46when we are home
- 7:48and we have homework, we usually do them
- 7:50in separate rooms cuz we know we get
- 7:52distracted and we'll start talking.
- 7:54Right. So, he usually stays in the
- 7:56living room and I stay in the bedroom
- 7:59and we get our homework done that way.
- 8:01He works, too, so we have really
- 8:05like conflicting schedules, but so it's
- 8:07not a problem.
- 8:08Um
- 8:10Uh we or I do go home a lot to
- 8:13Albuquerque to go see my mom.
- 8:16Um I'm her only child, so it's hard for
- 8:18her to be so away from me, which puts
- 8:21another time strain on me because then
- 8:23that takes away from me studying, but I
- 8:25have to go see her. Right. So. Okay. So,
- 8:29you don't have any other family here
- 8:30then? Uh no, not family. I have lots of
- 8:33friends here, but
- 8:34Do you get to spend a lot of time with
- 8:35them? Um we try. We have um
- 8:40homework and American Horror Story
- 8:42nights on Tuesdays. Oh, nice. So,
- 8:45we try and do that. Um
- 8:51Other than that, I really don't cuz my
- 8:54afternoons are kind of taken
- 8:56with the other job or with homework.
- 8:59Um
- 9:00but I do try to like go and see my
- 9:02friends, but then like the I decided to
- 9:06take one weekend off. We went to like a
- 9:08football game, we went to just different
- 9:10stuff around town and then that setting
- 9:13of anxiety and panic like set back in
- 9:15like now you're a whole weekend behind
- 9:17like now you need to get it together.
- 9:19So, then I started pushing myself more
- 9:21to catch up and I felt like I just kept
- 9:24getting further and further behind.
- 9:26So, I feel like I can't
- 9:28take the time off to go hang out with my
- 9:30friends because I can't fall behind.
- 9:33Right. Okay.
- 9:34Do you guys ever um
- 9:36And so, it sounds like even though
- 9:38you're wanting to spend time together,
- 9:40you know, you're afraid that it's going
- 9:41to push you behind or sometimes it does
- 9:42and that just creates more anxiety and
- 9:44depression.
- 9:45Um
- 9:46you said that you guys do study nights
- 9:47together where you watch horror American
- 9:49Horror Story.
- 9:50Yeah. Oh, okay.
- 9:51Um
- 9:52do you think that there's other times
- 9:53that you guys could get together to do
- 9:55these things? Maybe not necessarily like
- 9:57horror story or is are you pretty much
- 10:00adaptable with your schedule? Um
- 10:03it's kind of packed. Like it's usually
- 10:05like late in the evening when I'm free.
- 10:08Um
- 10:10So like I know me and a couple other
- 10:11girls were talking about getting
- 10:13together like on Thursday night to do
- 10:15Spanish homework like to just recap from
- 10:19everything and get caught up in that,
- 10:21but we wouldn't be able to do that until
- 10:23after 7:00.
- 10:24Which is
- 10:25kind of late, but I mean
- 10:27Right. it's it'll work.
- 10:30Okay.
- 10:31So other than the um the anxiety, is
- 10:34everything else going okay? Do you have
- 10:35any other kind of responsibilities other
- 10:37than school and work, anything like
- 10:38that?
- 10:39Um
- 10:40I probably add a lot more like added on
- 10:42responsibility to myself than anything,
- 10:44but
- 10:45like
- 10:47I get really OCD about cleaning. So I
- 10:50can't like function in my home unless
- 10:53everything is spotless. Okay. And it's
- 10:56really bad because I don't feel like I
- 10:58have the time to clean. So then me doing
- 11:00my homework while it's dirty really like
- 11:02sets me off and I'm just like there's I
- 11:04need to clean everything. Okay.
- 11:08Okay. So kind of sounds like we have
- 11:11some anxiety going on.
- 11:13Um
- 11:15Mhm.
- 11:16Let's see.
- 11:19So what um so other than the management
- 11:23and uh school work and
- 11:25uh work and work in general,
- 11:28um
- 11:29is there anything else that you're kind
- 11:31of expecting from this experience?
- 11:33Um what kind of help exactly are you
- 11:35looking for? Are you looking for more of
- 11:36like counseling for
- 11:39um anxiety and or just mainly
- 11:42management? Is there anything else?
- 11:44Well, after like sitting here and
- 11:46thinking about how much I've mentioned
- 11:47my anxiety, that probably wouldn't be a
- 11:49bad idea on top of the time management.
- 11:51It seems like my anxiety is a lot worse
- 11:54than I I feel like it is. Yeah. Okay.
- 11:57Um
- 11:57what kind of Well, I know that you said
- 11:59that you're busy. What kind of time
- 12:01um
- 12:03do you think that you would be able to
- 12:05come in? How often? Are you wanting to
- 12:07do like a once a week, once every 2
- 12:09weeks, things like that?
- 12:10Um once every 2 weeks is fine for me.
- 12:13And usually Monday, Wednesday, and
- 12:15Friday mornings are the best for me.
- 12:17Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Okay.
- 12:22Let's see.
- 12:23What time during the day? Um I don't
- 12:26have class until 1:30 that on those
- 12:28days, so anytime before that would be
- 12:31Okay. Okay.
- 12:32So mostly mornings.
- 12:35Okay.
- 12:38Let's
