  4. 0:04so social media is defined as people can
  5. 0:07communicating with others through
  6. 0:09electronic communication you may think
  7. 0:11this sounds positive right well you are
  8. 0:14right social media has impacted our
  9. 0:16society in many great ways and is a
  10. 0:18platform for connection like no other
  11. 0:20these apps allow you to communicate with
  12. 0:23friends and family and talk with people
  13. 0:24who may be far away it can even be a
  14. 0:27creative outlet for people who may want
  15. 0:30a career as content creators or
  16. 0:32influencers
  17. 0:34but despite all these positive aspects
  18. 0:36of social media the rise of these
  19. 0:38platforms has been detrimental to teens
  20. 0:40mental health and overall Wellness
  21. 0:42social media produces more negative
  22. 0:44impacts on teens because it can be the
  23. 0:47source of increased anxiety and lessen
  24. 0:49self-esteem impaired social interactions
  25. 0:51and worsen school performance
  26. 0:55first social media can negatively impact
  27. 0:57Us by lowering or increasing our anxiety
  28. 1:00and lowering our self-esteems several
  29. 1:02developmental psychology studies
  30. 1:04conducted by the National Institute for
  31. 1:06mental health have found that
  32. 1:08adolescents Place increased importance
  33. 1:10on interacting with peers and what their
  34. 1:12peers think of them as they enter this
  35. 1:14new stage of life and so
  36. 1:17social media goes hand in hand with this
  37. 1:19but in a more negative sense if um it
  38. 1:23provides new ways for adolescents to
  39. 1:25quantify their social approval such as
  40. 1:27through the number of likes that their
  41. 1:29posts get or how long they wait for
  42. 1:30feedback from friends and followers this
  43. 1:33constant feedback can create anxiety
  44. 1:35about self-worth and magnify the impact
  45. 1:37of pure judgment
  46. 1:40um
  47. 1:40also
  48. 1:42um sorry
  49. 1:44about pure judgment
  50. 1:47um we become enthralled in this constant
  51. 1:49cycle of posting and waiting for the
  52. 1:52opinions of others to evaluate our
  53. 1:53self-esteem which is not where we should
  54. 1:55be placing our worth
  55. 1:56and this lower self-confidence can be
  56. 1:58eliminated with better or decreased use
  57. 2:00of social media
  58. 2:02um
  59. 2:02now as well as a perspective shift of
  60. 2:04where you're placing your worth
  61. 2:06also a journal article about how teens
  62. 2:08construct their identities in social
  63. 2:10media and mention the term fomo which
  64. 2:13stands for the fear of missing out and
  65. 2:15this term was created because of the
  66. 2:17false Lifestyles being portrayed online
  67. 2:20when we're on social media we only post
  68. 2:22really when we're feeling happy or
  69. 2:23having fun and so we may look at our
  70. 2:26friends feeds and may feel left out or
  71. 2:28as if they're having more fun than we
  72. 2:30are when in reality we just don't share
  73. 2:32all the hard parts of life that we
  74. 2:34experience online this can lead to
  75. 2:36isolation and loneliness and even
  76. 2:38comparison which all lower our
  77. 2:40self-esteems
  78. 2:42additionally according to two behavioral
  79. 2:44researchers another risk associated with
  80. 2:47increased social media use is the
  81. 2:50difficulty for teens to communicate and
  82. 2:52participate in live conversations
  83. 2:55teens have lost their skills for real
  84. 2:58face-to-face interactions and is because
  85. 3:00we spend so much time on social media
  86. 3:02communicating through these carefully
  87. 3:04crafted messages that we form behind a
  88. 3:07screen
  89. 3:08um this lack of social skills not only
  90. 3:10impacts teens now but it does not set us
  91. 3:13up well for our future endeavors
  92. 3:15communication is a vital skill for
  93. 3:17professional development and so it is
  94. 3:20only gained through practice and so if
  95. 3:21we do not practice the skill without the
  96. 3:24removal of the social media barrier and
  97. 3:26we will not be well prepared for job
  98. 3:27interviews or work environments in the
  99. 3:29future
  100. 3:31we're only adding more challenges to
  101. 3:33this new young adult life in the real
  102. 3:34world all because of social media
  103. 3:36something went to connect us yet it
  104. 3:38divides Us in the environment that we
  105. 3:40need to be well-versed in the most our
  106. 3:42interpersonal reality
  107. 3:44further social media negatively impacts
  108. 3:47us through worsen's school performance
  109. 3:48as it causes distractions and hinders
  110. 3:51our time management
  111. 3:53um neurobiology researchers found that
  112. 3:55teens who use social media may be able
  113. 3:57to multitask with it but this constant
  114. 3:59influx of information and can lead to
  115. 4:02the inability to focus which can
  116. 4:04increase stress this can be evident in
  117. 4:07um less focus on school work increased
  118. 4:09procrastination and distractions in the
  119. 4:11classroom which are all detrimental to
  120. 4:13school performance
  121. 4:15also a study conducted and published in
  122. 4:18the Journal of pediatric nursing found
  123. 4:20that students could not concentrate on
  124. 4:22their homework assignment for more than
  125. 4:24two minutes without their attention
  126. 4:26being diverted to their devices and with
  127. 4:29notifications coming from Mostly social
  128. 4:31media apps
  129. 4:32this shows that social media distracts
  130. 4:35us from our tests at hand it further
  131. 4:37emphasizes the cycle we're stuck in of
  132. 4:39waiting for that next notification this
  133. 4:41consumes our minds and occupies space
  134. 4:43that our work should hold instead
  135. 4:46by lessening our social media use we can
  136. 4:49earn the grades that we want and attain
  137. 4:51better study attention spans
  138. 4:53which could all contribute to a better
  139. 4:55school experience
  140. 4:57so therefore social media is here to
  141. 4:59stay but you can redirect those impacts
  142. 5:01to be more positive if you make changes
  143. 5:04um you can evaluate who you follow on
  144. 5:06social media and think about how that
  145. 5:08truly affects you also I know that all
  146. 5:10of you have probably checked your screen
  147. 5:11time before and maybe you've seen a
  148. 5:14scary number and sat in shock but then
  149. 5:16you just exit out of that and continue
  150. 5:17to use those apps anyways one way we can
  151. 5:20help this is to set limits on your phone
  152. 5:23and settings on those social media apps
  153. 5:25and so that way you can evaluate if you
  154. 5:27need to spend your valuable time
  155. 5:28consuming all that media
  156. 5:31um so I'm not telling you to get rid of
  157. 5:33social media entirely as I know I would
  158. 5:35have a hard time doing that myself but I
  159. 5:37hope that you reconsider how you are
  160. 5:39using these platforms
  161. 5:40I encourage you to imagine how much
  162. 5:42better your Mental Health social
  163. 5:44interactions school performance and
  164. 5:47overall future would be with less use of
  165. 5:49social media now take that vision and
  166. 5:52make it a reality by making tangible
  167. 5:54changes today thank you
  168. 5:55[Applause]
