- 0:02Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, founder and
- 0:04head of Meta. Net worth 255 billion
- 0:07dollars, the sixth richest man in the
- 0:11world.
- 0:15>> 42 years old, a wife, three daughters,
- 0:18a passion for the Roman Empire, surfing
- 0:21, and martial arts. He owns a 120-meter
- 0:26yacht and numerous properties from
- 0:28California to Hawaii. A month ago, he
- 0:32also bought a 50-million-euro castle in
- 0:34Ireland, a tax haven and Meta's
- 0:36international headquarters. Everything
- 0:44started here, in a small Harvard dorm
- 0:47room, where at 19, Zuckerberg launched
- 0:50a site to connect students using their
- 0:52names and photos. It was called The
- 0:57Facebook and was the beginning of an
- 0:59empire that is now worth 1 trillion
- 1:00dollars and has no intention of
- 1:02stopping. On this planet, nearly one in
- 1:15two people uses platforms from the Meta
- 1:18galaxy today—3.6 billion people a day
- 1:20, including hundreds of millions of
- 1:23teenagers. It is regarding their
- 1:27responsibilities toward the youngest
- 1:29that, for the first time this year,
- 1:31Meta has ended up on trial. I was a
- 1:39guinea pig. As a child, I was part of a
- 1:43huge experiment without even knowing it
- 1:45. An experiment in which the company,
- 1:49now sitting in this courtroom, turned
- 1:51my childhood into screen time to sell
- 1:54to advertisers. I am here today because
- 1:59my daughter should still be alive. She
- 2:01was only 18 years old. She was a simple
- 2:04girl from Colorado. She loved her
- 2:06family, God, horses, and all the
- 2:08creatures she brought to our farm. But
- 2:12we could not know that behind her
- 2:13wonderful appearance, she was fighting
- 2:15a battle in the world of social media.
- 2:20Today, a historic trial has begun. We
- 2:23are one step away from closing the door
- 2:25on an era. An era in which algorithms
- 2:28designed by tech companies harm our
- 2:30children without ever having to answer
- 2:32for it. As a mother of two daughters
- 2:36aged 12 and 14, I felt sick. I felt
- 2:39sick when I read about the impact that
- 2:41certain features of Instagram and Meta
- 2:44can have on children who are still
- 2:46developing. I am disgusted, I am angry.
- 2:49We should all be angry. Nothing is more
- 2:53important than protecting our children,
- 2:55and there is no reason in the world for
- 2:57their health and well-being to be
- 2:59sacrificed or exploited to make big
- 3:01tech rich. On August 18, 2026, in
- 3:06Oakland, California, the biggest trial
- 3:08ever brought against Meta begins.
- 3:11Accusing the tech giant is a coalition
- 3:15of 47 American states. The first
- 3:19witness to testify in court is Arturo
- 3:21Behar, former head of safety at Meta.
- 3:27Super witness Zuckerberg is also
- 3:29expected at the end of the month, but
- 3:31on the morning of August 26, after just
- 3:33one week of proceedings, the
- 3:35announcement arrives. The trial is
- 3:38closed. The company has signed an
- 3:40agreement.
- 3:42>> Today my office concluded the Tennessee
- 3:44lawsuit with an unprecedented 17.1
- 3:46billion dollar settlement that resolved
- 3:48our case and the cases of 50 other
- 3:50states across the country. This is one
- 3:55of the largest consumer protection
- 3:57settlements in history, the largest
- 3:58settlement with big tech in world
- 4:00history.
- 4:01>> The sum that Meta agreed to pay, 17
- 4:04billion dollars spread over 10 years,
- 4:07is barely 1%of its market value. But
- 4:12the heart of the agreement is the
- 4:13safety measures the company must
- 4:15introduce to protect minors. Nighttime
- 4:18block from midnight to 6:00 AM, a daily
- 4:21limit of 2 hours. No notifications
- 4:24during school hours, stricter age
- 4:26verification.
- 4:28>> The conditions we obtained, in my
- 4:30opinion, are better than any other
- 4:31result that has ever been achieved.
- 4:34>> Who will check that Meta does
- 4:35everything you asked for?
- 4:38>> We will have annual reports from an
- 4:40independent oversight body, and if we
- 4:42have doubts that the company is not
- 4:44respecting the agreement, we can ask
- 4:45for more information and more
- 4:47transparency. We know we must remain
- 4:50vigilant. We hope to save lives, to be
- 4:52able to make them feel better. Now
- 4:55>> the restrictions will go into effect
- 4:57starting in February 2027, but be
- 4:59careful, they will only apply to the
- 5:02American states that signed the
- 5:04agreement. For all other countries in
- 5:07the world, us included, Meta has no
- 5:10obligations. Yet social media addiction
- 5:13among kids affects everyone. Since
- 5:23Molly's death, I have met many families
- 5:25who have lost a loved one, a child, a
- 5:28brother, a sister, because of what
- 5:30happens online. We are talking about
- 5:33bullying, eating disorders, content
- 5:35related to suicide and self-harm, like
- 5:38in Molly's case.
- 5:41>> Ian Russell lives in London and is the
- 5:43father of Molly, who took her own life
- 5:45in 2017 at 14 years old. It was the
- 5:49first case in the world in which a
- 5:51ruling recognized the shared
- 5:53responsibility of what she had seen on
- 5:55the Meta and Pinterest platforms. We
- 5:59met him 3 years ago in our episode "The
- 6:02Black Box," when talking about mental
- 6:04distress linked to social media
- 6:07overexposure seemed like a gamble. With
- 6:11Irene Sicurella, we returned to London
- 6:13to meet him. What has changed in all
- 6:15this time? In a nutshell, not enough.
- 6:19Almost 9 years after Molly's suicide,
- 6:21the content she was exposed to online,
- 6:23which the court recognized as having
- 6:25contributed to her death in a far from
- 6:27negligible way, is still available
- 6:29online today, exactly as it was then.
- 6:33And the most serious thing is that the
- 6:35platforms 'algorithms continue to push
- 6:37harmful content to children and
- 6:39vulnerable young people. The problem is
- 6:43that science and, above all, politics
- 6:45—those who make the laws—
- 6:47traditionally move very slowly, while
- 6:49the online world moves very fast. What
- 6:52is happening is no longer acceptable.
- 6:54In the United Kingdom, almost one young
- 6:56person a week takes their own life due
- 6:58to harm linked to these platforms.
- 7:00Every week that we fail to intervene,
- 7:02there is another Molly, another similar
- 7:04case.
