So You Want To Warrior Tank In WoW Forever? — Transcript

- 0:00Hey guys, I'm back with another video.
- 0:02And today we're going to be talking
- 0:03about tanking. And we're not going to be
- 0:04talking about rotation or builds or
- 0:07press this, then press that, but then
- 0:09press this.
- 0:10This is going to be part one of a series
- 0:12where I take it upon myself to teach new
- 0:14players the absolute basics of warrior
- 0:17tanking. And eventually this series will
- 0:19lead to rotations, builds, buttons to
- 0:22press, talents, this items, etc. But
- 0:25right now, we need to focus on the
- 0:28basics. This is going to be a new player
- 0:31and beginner-friendly tank video where I
- 0:34talk to you about everything that comes
- 0:35into tanking mentally. Pre-pull, your
- 0:39groups, what happens when you have a
- 0:41negative person in your group, what
- 0:42happens when the run is slow, what
- 0:44happens when your healer is
- 0:45under-geared, what happens when you are
- 0:46under-geared, what should you be
- 0:48thinking before a boss pull. Anything
- 0:50that you can think of mentally that
- 0:52comes in with tanking a dungeon, this
- 0:55video will cover it. I promise you, this
- 0:57will be one of the best videos you've
- 0:58ever watched if you're a new tank or
- 1:00just a person that needs a refresher.
- 1:03Now, when I stream all the time, I get
- 1:05people in my comments saying,
- 1:07"You know, I lost aggro on this and then
- 1:10I started to panic.
- 1:11I had a guy that started pulling for me
- 1:14because I was going too slow and then I
- 1:16started to panic. I had a healer who
- 1:18couldn't keep me up on an AoE pack and I
- 1:21started to panic. I couldn't hold AoE
- 1:24threat and I started to panic." The
- 1:26common denominator in all of that is you
- 1:28start to panic and then eventually it
- 1:30just keeps spiraling and then you wipe,
- 1:33then it gets worse, then your group
- 1:35leaves or then you get a hostile
- 1:36teammate who's just
- 1:39genuinely just an awful person to be
- 1:41around. This can spiral very, very fast
- 1:45in your head mentally. And then before
- 1:47you know it, you're saying, "Oh, I don't
- 1:49really want to tank anymore." Or "Oh,
- 1:51I'm a hashtag committed DPS warrior."
- 1:53That's not what we need and that's why
- 1:55this video is going to help you. So,
- 1:57let's go ahead and get started. So, in
- 1:59the first part of this video, I really
- 2:01just want to chat about some things that
- 2:02you should be thinking about mentally
- 2:04and how to gain confidence as a tank.
- 2:06And then later in this video, we're
- 2:08going to go over some small footage
- 2:09breakdowns of me tanking and kind of
- 2:12what goes through my head when I'm
- 2:13tanking dungeons. Now, I want to be
- 2:15clear again, this video has nothing to
- 2:17do with buttons to press, that this this
- 2:19[music] this talent builds rotations,
- 2:21has nothing to do with that. This video
- 2:23is specifically for new players who are
- 2:26trying to gain either confidence or the
- 2:28mental fortitude or really just the
- 2:30knowledge of what goes into tanking
- 2:32behind the scenes. And with that being
- 2:35said, one of the biggest things I want
- 2:37to talk about is you're going to make
- 2:40mistakes and that is okay. Mistakes are
- 2:42going to happen. I even make mistakes
- 2:45whether it's in a raid or a dungeon or
- 2:48while I'm on stream. You guys see me
- 2:50make mistakes all the time. It's not
- 2:52really about making mistakes. If you
- 2:54want to become a better tank, the number
- 2:56one thing you need to do is be ready to
- 2:59act on things when [music] they go
- 3:01south. So, my very first piece of advice
- 3:04for you is don't worry about the
- 3:06mistakes, don't spiral off of your
- 3:08mistakes.
- 3:09How are you going to act on those
- 3:11mistakes? How are you going to act on
- 3:12your group's mistakes and what are you
- 3:14going to do when the situation that
- 3:16you've created in your head either
- 3:18pre-pull or boss pull or whatever goes
- 3:20south? What are you going to do about
- 3:22it?
- 3:23Now, another piece of advice that I have
- 3:25for you and this is something I really
- 3:27commonly see when I meet with people in
- 3:28one-on-one sessions or honestly just
- 3:31watching people post me things on
- 3:32Discord about them tanking is they go
- 3:36into these dungeons right away and they
- 3:37instantly feel like they have to prove
- 3:40something or prove something to their
- 3:41group. And honestly, as a tank new
- 3:44experienced veteran or just relearning
- 3:47how to tank especially as a warrior,
- 3:49there's no reason for you to prove
- 3:51anything.
- 3:52Again, new tanks often enter these
- 3:54dungeons and feel like they have
- 3:55something to prove. Oh, I need to show
- 3:57these guys I'm good or I need to show
- 3:59them, you know, I'm I'm a great tank or
- 4:02I'm an experienced tank. And that's when
- 4:03the stupid things start to happen. You
- 4:05start pulling too much. You start going
- 4:07too fast. You try to match the speed of
- 4:09like a guy that you've seen on YouTube.
- 4:11You start taking risks and then your
- 4:13group starts to pay for it. Because what
- 4:15happens is not only are you not
- 4:17experienced to be doing that, your group
- 4:18thinks you are, so they start DPSing
- 4:20harder. They start pulling for you. And
- 4:22then all of the sudden, it just spirals.
- 4:25Your goal isn't to impress the group.
- 4:27Your goal is just to finish the dungeon
- 4:30and find ways to keep the run clean. And
- 4:33if that means pulling one pack at a
- 4:34time, then do it. Do what you're
- 4:37comfortable with and pull one pack at a
- 4:39time.
- 4:40Again, you are the tank. You are the
- 4:43leader.
- 4:44Your group will not know that you are
- 4:45not prepared for this dungeon unless you
- 4:47tell them. They are going to assume that
- 4:50you know what to do, where to go. I
- 4:52can't tell you how many times I've
- 4:53entered a dungeon, especially in WoW
- 4:55forever, and they instantly throw one of
- 4:58the markers on me like a square, and
- 5:00they just follow me around like a puppy
- 5:01dog. If you're not prepared to do that,
- 5:04you need to tell them. But also, it
- 5:06should be a wake-up call for you. I know
- 5:08it sounds silly because this is just
- 5:10pixels, but when it comes to tanking,
- 5:11you have the most important job in the
- 5:14game. And if you don't take the time to
- 5:16put in the work with getting in chance,
- 5:18shield spikes, um picking a group that
- 5:21helps you with AoE threat, or getting a
- 5:23healer that you're comfortable with, a
- 5:25class that you're comfortable with, or
- 5:26grabbing a class that you know how they
- 5:28use their CC, or just walking in with
- 5:31your simply like your gear repaired. If
- 5:33you don't put in the work to be a tank,
- 5:36how can you expect that run to go good?
- 5:38Your group is depending on you. Please
- 5:41put in the work to be a decent tank.
- 5:45Now, I promise you, this is the biggest
- 5:48piece of advice that I'm going to give
- 5:49you in this video if you are a new
- 5:51player. [music]
- 5:52If there's anything I want you to
- 5:54remember from this video, it's what I am
- 5:56about to say.
- 5:57You need to learn and put it in your
- 5:59brain. You can only control what you can
- 6:03control. Or if I word it in another way,
- 6:06know what you're responsible for as a
- 6:08tank and know what you're not
- 6:10responsible for as a tank. I literally
- 6:13cannot give you any better advice than
- 6:15that. Again, people come in here trying
- 6:18to do too much or they have a toxic
- 6:20teammate and they try to make up for it
- 6:22by um, you know, we have a hunter just
- 6:24pulling threat on purpose and you run
- 6:26back and taunt it. That's only hurting
- 6:28your performance.
- 6:29You cannot control that. And the more
- 6:31you cater to a player like that, the
- 6:34more that you are getting a taken
- 6:36advantage of, your time's getting
- 6:37wasted, and the group is just an
- 6:39absolute mess. So, let's go over some
- 6:42things that you are responsible for as a
- 6:45tank. Keeping enemies controlled,
- 6:47keeping them together, keeping them uh,
- 6:50you know, with the demoralizing shout,
- 6:51thunder clap, marking things if they
- 6:53need to be CC'd. That is in your
- 6:55control. Positioning the mobs is in your
- 6:58control. Managing your own survival,
- 7:01setting the pace, and reacting to things
- 7:04when they go wrong. Tho- Those are
- 7:08things that are in your control. Now,
- 7:10let's talk about things that you're not
- 7:12responsible for or things that you
- 7:15cannot control. And trust me, if you've
- 7:16been watching my streams, you have seen
- 7:18these exact type of players that I deal
- 7:21with. And I just let it go. DPS standing
- 7:24in bad positions or just simply eating
- 7:27AoE DPS for no reason. Someone pulling
- 7:30aggro because they attacked before you.
- 7:33You see that all of the time in my
- 7:34stream with shamans, hunters.
- 7:36Someone running ahead and pulling in
- 7:38front of me. Someone refusing to follow
- 7:40strats that the that the group has
- 7:42said we were going to do, or someone
- 7:44getting themselves killed.
- 7:46I promise you, if you start worrying
- 7:49about those things that you're not
- 7:51responsible for, you're going to become
- 7:53miserable. You are going to burn
- 7:55yourself out of tanking within a week. I
- 7:58promise you.
- 8:00If you come into the dungeon thinking if
- 8:02somebody dies, it's automatically my
- 8:05fault, you're going to fail.
- 8:08In just my last stream, I had an
- 8:10experience just like this. I had a
- 8:13hunter who was more geared than me,
- 8:15three levels above me, just absolutely
- 8:19DPSing as hard as he can before I can
- 8:21even touch the mob. I had a shaman who
- 8:23had rockbiter on, which is basically
- 8:25righteous fury for a paladin tank. I
- 8:28asked him to take it off.
- 8:29What do you think [music] he said? He
- 8:31said, "No, I want to DPS." These people
- 8:34will bring you down. They will make the
- 8:36run miserable, but it's only going to
- 8:39get more miserable if you feed into
- 8:41them. Allow them to do whatever they
- 8:43want and continue doing your job as a
- 8:46tank and control the things that we
- 8:48talked about. For example, if a hunter's
- 8:50pulling off of me like that, and the mob
- 8:53has like 50 50% health or something like
- 8:55that, I'm not going to worry about it.
- 8:58One single mob is not going to kill that
- 9:00player. And the more that I feed into
- 9:02him doing that, like running back and
- 9:04bringing three mobs with me and
- 9:05taunting, it's just going to do the
- 9:07group worse. Another example, that
- 9:10shaman with rockbiter, as soon as he
- 9:12uses any sort of ability or auto attack
- 9:15or windfury crit, eventually he's just
- 9:17going to pull threat on me. That's what
- 9:18rockbiter does. I'm not going to worry
- 9:20about it. I asked him to turn it off, he
- 9:22said no, he was trying to be hostile,
- 9:25looking for an argument. I just ignored
- 9:27him, and I simply kept doing my job, and
- 9:30I would just hold threat on all the
- 9:32other mobs that he was not touching.
- 9:35These are simple things that you can do
- 9:37that you need to put in the back of your
- 9:38mind for when these situations happen
- 9:40because you don't think they will, but
- 9:42trust me, these situations will happen
- 9:44and you need to take action for
- 9:46yourself. This is exactly what I'm
- 9:48talking about when people come in my
- 9:50stream and they say, "I know I just had
- 9:52these really annoying players and now
- 9:53that I just I just think I'm a bad
- 9:55tank." And what do you think the common
- 9:56denominator is? "I started panicking and
- 9:59then I just over pulled and then we
- 10:00wiped and then the group left."
- 10:02Control the things that you can control
- 10:06and you automatically will become a
- 10:08better tank. Now, let's take a look at a
- 10:11quick snippet of exactly what I'm
- 10:13talking about. We're going to start the
- 10:15video here and I'm going to pause it
- 10:17already. I apologize, but I have a
- 10:19Shaman and a Ret Paladin with me right
- 10:22now. Two classes that already have been
- 10:25acknowledged as incredibly overpowered.
- 10:29Not to mention that this Ret Paladin has
- 10:31Wolfsbane, which is the blue sword that
- 10:34does extra damage to Worgen. So,
- 10:36pre-pull, or I should say even before
- 10:38the dungeon, I already knew I was going
- 10:40to have some issues with threat because
- 10:42of what I have in my group, but that's
- 10:44okay. So, let's take a look at this
- 10:46situation.
- 10:48Now, before I even touch the mob, you're
- 10:51going to see that the Paladin has
- 10:52already used his seal on it and is auto
- 10:54attacking and the Shaman has already
- 10:57used an ability also on this Worgen. I
- 10:59have not even touched the mob and these
- 11:02guys are already blasting threat. Now,
- 11:05what do I do in this situation? You're
- 11:07going to see. I'm just literally using
- 11:09it as a rage mob. If they are going to
- 11:12go ahead and pull for me and just
- 11:15completely ignore my job as a tank, I
- 11:18now look at that mob as a rage battery.
- 11:21I'm not going to blow my taunt. I'm not
- 11:23going to do anything like that. I'm
- 11:25simply just going to use this mob as a
- 11:28rage battery and it's that simple. If I
- 11:31continue to allow these people to bother
- 11:34me, it's just going to spiral in and out
- 11:37of control. Look at this mob's health.
- 11:39It is getting absolutely deleted by this
- 11:41Paladin. Do you think I'm going to be
- 11:43able to hold threat on that? Absolutely
- 11:45not. So, instead of letting it bother me
- 11:47and spiral out of control, again, I'm
- 11:50just using this as a rage battery. So,
- 11:52luckily now I have a half bat rage bar.
- 11:54I have blood rage coming up on CD before
- 11:57the boss.
- 11:58I'm just not letting it bother me.
- 12:00Again, this is a very small sample size
- 12:02of something that you are able to
- 12:04control. And if you let it bother you,
- 12:07it's just going to spiral and make it
- 12:08worse.
- 12:10Now, let's take a look at another
- 12:12dungeon, and I'm going to go through
- 12:14kind of my thought processes or things
- 12:16that will definitely help you improve as
- 12:17a tank that don't really have to do
- 12:19rotation-wise.
- 12:20>> [music]
- 12:20>> So, something I'm thinking about in this
- 12:23group before we even zone in is what
- 12:25exactly do I have in my group? And I go
- 12:28off of my analysis from that. So, for
- 12:30this example, we're four-manning a dead
- 12:32mines. It's me, a priest, and two
- 12:35rogues. So, going into this, I know I
- 12:38have things like I have fort. [music]
- 12:40I have a priest bubble, which allows you
- 12:42to get rage generation off the bubble.
- 12:44Now, that is something they fixed. I
- 12:46also have two rogues, two very heavy,
- 12:49obviously, melee DPS that do a lot of
- 12:52damage. I saw their gear when they came
- 12:54in. They had better gear than me. But
- 12:56more importantly, I don't really care
- 12:58about that. What I care about is that
- 13:00they have interrupts. They have kicks.
- 13:03And that's exactly what I need in a
- 13:05dungeon is things that I can rely on for
- 13:08interrupts. So, let's go ahead and keep
- 13:10looking at more spots in this dungeon.
- 13:13Now, really quick, the easiest way you
- 13:16can combat hasty DPS, people that like
- 13:19to attack as soon as you touch a mob or
- 13:21before you even touch a mob, is pulling
- 13:23rage. If you've watched my stream, if
- 13:26you watch my videos, you know I'm always
- 13:28harping on the idea of pulling rage. It
- 13:31makes your dungeon smoother, it helps
- 13:33you become a better tank, it helps you
- 13:35outside in the open world while you're
- 13:36leveling.
- 13:38The more you pull [music] rage, the
- 13:40better opportunities you will put
- 13:42yourself in to succeed. Now, look at
- 13:44this. We have one mob that was pulled.
- 13:48One mob. I have both of my DPS that are
- 13:51pumping on it. Do you see me using any
- 13:54abilities on this mob? Do you see any
- 13:56Sunders? Any Demoralizing Shout? Any
- 13:59Thunder Clap? No. Why would I waste rage
- 14:02on one single mob that we are pulling?
- 14:06If I have one mob in this situation, it
- 14:09is a rage battery, and that is it. So,
- 14:12when I pull rage from this mob, it
- 14:15allows me to have rage to use on a pull
- 14:17where we have two mobs, three mobs. This
- 14:19allows me to get my shield block off,
- 14:22followed by the revenge, and then
- 14:24followed with a Thunder Clap. And that
- 14:27is all from my rage from pulling on a
- 14:29mob like this. Pulling rage is the
- 14:33easiest way to combat hasty DPS, but
- 14:36also give you an easier chance to
- 14:39succeed as a tank. If you have rage
- 14:41coming into a pull, it's very obvious.
- 14:44It's I know it sounds obvious, but a lot
- 14:46of people don't think about it. If
- 14:48[music] you pull rage, you have
- 14:50rage to push your abilities for the next
- 14:54pull.
- 14:55Now, [music] I was fortunate to pause
- 14:57this at the perfect time.
- 14:59Let's take a look at a situation like
- 15:01this. Now, the mobs are jumbled
- 15:03together, but what I'm actually holding
- 15:05as a tank right now is a goblin and two
- 15:08remote-controlled golems, the ones that
- 15:10the goblin engineers can uh spawn or
- 15:13they will spawn.
- 15:15Look at the goblin engineer to the right
- 15:17that has like what? 10% health? Maybe
- 15:20less?
- 15:21It is currently attacking the rogue
- 15:23right next to me.
- 15:25Do you think I'm going to blow a taunt
- 15:27on a mob like that? Do you think that
- 15:29that rogue is in danger right now?
- 15:32Well, let's take a look at our healer's
- 15:33mana. He has full mana.
- 15:36The rogue himself has essentially full
- 15:39health. Why would I waste rage or my
- 15:42resources or even a GCD cool down
- 15:45[music]
- 15:45on a mob that is essentially almost dead
- 15:48and has two of my DPS attacking it? Why
- 15:51would I blow a taunt? Time and time
- 15:54again, I see people just wasting rage or
- 15:57wasting their abilities on mobs that do
- 16:01not matter.
- 16:02Why would I waste my energy
- 16:05I mean, like, you know, like my mental
- 16:06energy or my rage on a mob that's going
- 16:10to die and has put nobody in danger.
- 16:12[music]
- 16:13That mob at 10% health is like three
- 16:15auto attacks from being dead. And how
- 16:17many auto attacks is he going to get
- 16:19[music] off? Maybe one or two?
- 16:21Is that going to put the group in
- 16:22danger? Absolutely not. So, why would I
- 16:25use my conk my taunt cool down on that
- 16:27mob? Let's say one of these extra mobs
- 16:30pulls, then I wouldn't have a taunt to
- 16:32use. And check out my rage bar right
- 16:34now. I've put myself in a terrible
- 16:35opportunity or uh you know, just a
- 16:38terrible situation. Let's say we do have
- 16:40extra mobs pull and I use a taunt on a
- 16:43mob that has like no health like that.
- 16:45Well, now I don't have taunt. Then I
- 16:47would have to switch out of battle
- 16:48stance and lose any rage that I pulled
- 16:51to use mocking blow. And then by that
- 16:53time, the the other mobs that I'm
- 16:55holding right now are going on a
- 16:57different target in our party, like
- 16:59rogue or maybe even the healer. Do you
- 17:01see how if I use my taunt too early,
- 17:04that whole [music] situation just
- 17:05spiraled out of control?
- 17:08If you spend rage or your resources or
- 17:11your abilities on mobs that do not
- 17:14matter and that are going to die already
- 17:16without putting the group in danger,
- 17:18you're going to give your group a harder
- 17:21time.
- 17:22Look at me. I'm not in any panic. I'm
- 17:24not even targeting that mob. I have a
- 17:27taunt on cool down. I have my berserking
- 17:29coming up. I have thunder clap coming up
- 17:32and I have my shield block. I have all
- 17:34my abilities ready to go. The last thing
- 17:36I'm going to do is use my taunt on that
- 17:38mob or even worse, use a heroic strike
- 17:41or a sunder armor and blow rage for no
- 17:43reason. I see it time and time again.
- 17:46New players feel like they have to be
- 17:47holding threat on mobs all the time.
- 17:50That's not true. And in fact, we're
- 17:52going to talk about something and we
- 17:54might as well talk about it now. I
- 17:56always mark skull
- 17:58>> [music]
- 17:58>> for something that is a healer mob or a
- 18:02caster mob, something that doesn't have
- 18:04a lot of armor that can die very
- 18:06quickly. As long as my DPS are focused
- 18:09on that skull, I'm not going to waste
- 18:12resources on it. I'm not going to waste
- 18:14my rage trying to hold a mob that's
- 18:16being blasted by three
- 18:19potential DPS in my group that might be
- 18:21more geared than me, that might be
- 18:22higher level than me. Skull is
- 18:25identified to kill first. You are going
- 18:28to waste so much rage trying to hold
- 18:30that mob because guess what? As soon as
- 18:32that mob dies, you have no threat on the
- 18:35other mobs and all it's going to take is
- 18:37two hunter multi shots and you have lost
- 18:39control of the entire pack. Skull is
- 18:41designed for you and your party, I'm
- 18:44sorry, your party to focus that mob
- 18:47while you hold threat on everything
- 18:48else. So a word of urge, the tip that I
- 18:51would love you guys to start
- 18:52implementing
- 18:53is using skull towards the weakest mob
- 18:56in the group, the caster, the healer, or
- 18:59the one that simply just does a lot of
- 19:01damage like a battle mage in Stratholme
- 19:03for instance. As long as it's getting
- 19:06nuked down first, that does that's fine.
- 19:08It's not going to put your group in
- 19:10danger. You worry about holding the
- 19:12other four mobs that will put your group
- 19:14in danger if they start running around
- 19:17because then your DPS is going to panic.
- 19:19CC doesn't come out. The healer starts
- 19:21to panic or starts healing two people
- 19:23including you, then he has no mana.
- 19:26>> [music]
- 19:26>> So, I use skull as something as the DPS
- 19:30obviously need to nuke it first. I'm not
- 19:32worried about it if it's attacking this
- 19:34rogue, fine.
- 19:36Now, really quickly, one of the things I
- 19:38do want to talk about and it is
- 19:39something that a lot of people bring up
- 19:42in my stream is AoE threat as a warrior.
- 19:45I'm really struggling with AoE threat.
- 19:47Like, what is your rotation? What are
- 19:49some things you do that help you hold
- 19:51AoE threat? And again, let's use all of
- 19:54the tools that we have just talked about
- 19:56and implement those with AoE threat.
- 19:59Number one, let's go right to back to
- 20:00what we were just talking about, marking
- 20:02a skull. Marking a skull on a pack of
- 20:05four mobs for your DPS to blast allows
- 20:07you to get AoE threat on all the other
- 20:09mobs while they're focusing that mob.
- 20:12That is one of the easiest things you
- 20:13can do. Now, let's circle back to
- 20:15another thing that we talked about,
- 20:17analyzing your group or forming a group
- 20:20that matches your strengths. It is no
- 20:23secret right now that warriors need as
- 20:25much help as possible when it comes to
- 20:28AoE DPS. Some things that you can do
- 20:31that will help you is some of the gear
- 20:33that is in WoW forever. Like, for
- 20:35example, the bracers out of Dead Mines
- 20:37that give you damage when you block. So,
- 20:39basically, every time you shield block
- 20:41or you proc a block, it is going to do
- 20:43damage to those mobs. Or, for example,
- 20:46let's take a look at something else, a
- 20:47shield spike on your shield which does
- 20:49the same thing. Now, let's include some
- 20:52of our other party members. Thorns from
- 20:54druids is really strong. Ret aura from a
- 20:57paladin is very strong or even a fire
- 20:59shield from a warlock's imp. That will
- 21:02give you AoE DPS when you're hit as
- 21:05well.
- 21:06Again,
- 21:07you need to find ways other than
- 21:09yourself to build a strong AoE set, and
- 21:12that goes back to what we were saying
- 21:14with analyzing what's in your group or
- 21:16forming a group that fits your
- 21:18strengths.
- 21:20There really isn't an an excuse for AoE
- 21:22DPS with all the steps we talked about.
- 21:25Mark a skull, let your DPS kill it,
- 21:28get some other classes that fit in your
- 21:30group and worry about the other mobs
- 21:32that your DPS is not focusing. Again,
- 21:35this was a very basic video that I hope
- 21:38I really hope has helped some of you new
- 21:41players out when it comes to mentally
- 21:43being a better tank and some basic basic
- 21:46tips about handling mobs and allowing
- 21:49your DPS to do what they need to do to
- 21:51get the job done. Be sure to subscribe,
- 21:53and I'll see you guys on the next video.
