Full transcript
- 0:00You've not been able to soak in the
- 0:01environment.
- 0:02>> Yeah. Yeah. 2017 World Cup final. I was
- 0:048 19 year old. I never knew what to do.
- 0:06I just went to B. Saw that first time
- 0:08women's cricket had 20 odd,000 people
- 0:11and that's my first match at Lords. I
- 0:13went and the third ball is like zero out
- 0:17till I realized what's happening. I was
- 0:19already out.
- 0:20>> You were not focused on the batting. You
- 0:21were focused on like
- 0:23>> I wouldn't say I was focused that it's
- 0:25just that even if you're not focusing
- 0:27it, I feel it's more than avoiding it.
- 0:29you should just embrace it. At that time
- 0:31I was avoiding it.
- 0:33>> Today's guest Summiti Mandana, one of
- 0:35the biggest stars in Indian cricket. She
- 0:37opens up about the sacrifices behind
- 0:39success, bouncing back from failure,
- 0:42handling expectations and constantly
- 0:45pushing herself to become better.
- 0:47>> Okay, take me on the day of final match
- 0:50of the World Cup. You have to walk me
- 0:52through that day. Like
- 0:52>> morning I wake up for breakfast as
- 0:55usual. Everyone's families were there.
- 0:57Indian cricket family went back did my
- 0:59mobility routine ground mal it's a
- 1:01walking distance that we stayed at but I
- 1:03like 10 minutes drive to the stadium so
- 1:05for DIY patel matches I used to start
- 1:07listening to songs on airports in room
- 1:09only
- 1:10>> so that song I s Indian entry song tuan
- 1:13was my go-to song for a very long time
- 1:15so first I enter I like kind of see and
- 1:18I just try and soak it in and be
- 1:20comfortable around it because once
- 1:21you're comfortable you just feel like
- 1:23okay it's your space I have that routine
- 1:25touch the down. Go sideways twice,
- 1:28sideways this twice, three back flips,
- 1:30look at the sun just near the 23 ys.
- 1:33Like just do that.
- 1:34>> You have a 30inut rule.
- 1:35>> Yeah, it's a 30-minut rule. Like I
- 1:37wouldn't dwell on anything in life, not
- 1:39only cricket. Anything in life 30 40
- 1:41minutes.
- 1:43>> I think I've got up done.
- 1:46>> Let me name like top emotion. Can you
- 1:48tell me what you feel about them? Like
- 1:49what do you think about anger?
- 1:51If you get angry, you could talk
- 1:53something which would hurt the other
- 1:54person a lot. So rather than hurting
- 1:57that person, just be quiet.
- 1:58>> How do you feel about sad as an emotion?
- 2:00>> For me, I feel I just go quiet for a
- 2:02very long time. I hate sympathy. Any
- 2:04sort of sympathy.
- 2:07I'm fine. Even if I've got I've had a
- 2:09bad World Cup. Don't look at me as I
- 2:12don't like to portray myself. I'm
- 2:14strong.
- 2:14>> When was the last time you cried?
- 2:16>> Good question.
- 2:19I have a small favor to ask you. I need
- 2:22you to subscribe to our channel. The
- 2:24more subscribers we have, the better and
- 2:27bigger guests we can bring and provide
- 2:29you more value through these

- 2:33experience of this show is also

- 2:37follow us and listen to the new episodes
- 2:39as well. A lot of people today are
- 2:41becoming micro entrepreneurs building
- 2:43something of their own. A small
- 2:45business, a side hustle, something they
- 2:46run from home. And for them, getting
- 2:49products to customers reliably without
- 2:51spending a lot is a big challenge.
- 2:54That's why I suggest Porter. Their
- 2:56two-heer service is available in more
- 2:58than 50 cities. And they have also
- 3:01launched Porter scooter with the same
- 3:03capacity for goods that need extra space
- 3:06and extra care. So whether you're
- 3:07sending an order to a customer or moving
- 3:10goods for your own business, Porter
- 3:12takes care of it all. And the best part
- 3:15is that you never have to negotiate on
- 3:17price. Whatever rate you see on the app
- 3:20is exactly what you pay. To know more
- 3:22about our title sponsor Porter and their
- 3:24services, check the link in the
- 3:26description below.
- 3:31>> Okay. So let let me show you two
- 3:33pictures and you tell me what has
- 3:34changed.
- 3:36hairstyle or
- 3:40hairstyle or
- 3:43there you go.
- 3:43>> Oh, so these are two different eras of
- 3:47smiti. Okay, this is you when you
- 3:50started or probably little after that
- 3:53and then this is you right now. Tell me
- 3:55just the differences and I'll write
- 3:56down.
- 3:57>> Oh,
- 3:57>> what are the differences
- 4:00between
- 4:02the KDU versus who you are right now?
- 4:08Interesting. I'm thinking loved batting.
- 4:10Loved batting.
- 4:12>> Don't tell me the similarities. We
- 4:14covered that.
- 4:17>> Maybe I was very organized and
- 4:19disciplined. This person is not that
- 4:22organized and disciplined.
- 4:26>> I feel
- 4:27>> I you know somehow I prefer my younger
- 4:29self more than my self.
- 4:30>> Why would you say so? I feel I was a lot
- 4:33like a confident extra confident kid. I
- 4:36had like I'll show you like you know I
- 4:38was a very
- 4:40like I would fight with anyone and fight
- 4:43with anyone and I would like show the
- 4:45world like what it is kind of a person I
- 4:47was like fight with guys get my work
- 4:50done.
- 4:53And you know I was again very organized,
- 4:55disciplined, very clean and neat and
- 4:58this person is not I would say he's
- 5:02doing the same thing now.
- 5:04>> What has changed? What has how is this
- 5:07person today not organized at all?
- 5:09>> I try and be but see we are traveling 11
- 5:12months. It's so hard.
- 5:14>> It's literally very hard to be very
- 5:16organized with your stuff. You're
- 5:18packing. You're literally living in a in
- 5:20a bag.
- 5:21>> So, you just crush everything in a bag.
- 5:22>> No, no, no. I pack properly.
- 5:24>> Okay.
- 5:24>> But I wouldn't say like my room would be
- 5:27really really clean after a day or two.
- 5:29Like again, it's not the worst. I have
- 5:32seen like I've seen a lot of people who
- 5:34are worse.
- 5:34>> Okay.
- 5:35>> But I'm not worst. But this person was
- 5:37like school
- 5:40subjects that seven books lines subject
- 5:44wise
- 5:45like iron your own uniform, polish your
- 5:48shoes and keep like this was like ultra.
- 5:52I'm not saying I'm bad now, but this was
- 5:54like too much of a perfectionist.
- 5:57>> So this is maybe not. Now my mom always
- 5:59says
- 6:01perfectionist, confident and what else?
- 6:04deep questions.
- 6:11If you speak to my friends, they would
- 6:12come and be like, "You're doing a
- 6:14podcast with Smitty. Are you mad?"
- 6:18That time I'm using my brother's bad. I
- 6:20think it's bad. It's not even my size.
- 6:21Look at my tiny hands and the bat size.
- 6:24This is my own bat made for me specially
- 6:26with sponsors on it. It's a good change.
- 6:29>> It's a very good change.
- 6:30>> It's a good change for women's cricket.
- 6:32I feel it's not only change good change
- 6:34for me. I think it's a good change for
- 6:35women's cricket to have this virgin now.
- 6:39>> Yeah.
- 6:41>> And yeah, I don't know. I mean otherwise
- 6:44I think pretty simil like chill only.
- 6:46I'm chill. I'm still chilling. Still
- 6:48scared of boo still scared of booth.
- 6:52>> That's the similarity. So you you
- 6:54pointed out three specific things. Okay.
- 6:56Clearly you wanted to win and you're
- 6:58winning. You still want to win. I'm sure
- 7:01that those things have not changed.
- 7:03>> Those things those things ambition will
- 7:05keep probably you're more ambitious now
- 7:06than you were because you must have
- 7:08realized
- 7:09>> the power of ambition and what you can
- 7:10achieve.
- 7:11>> Yeah. Yeah. I believe in manifestation a
- 7:13lot and I believed I I think I watched
- 7:16the video like the secrets. I don't
- 7:18Yeah. So I I am a big big believer of
- 7:21that.
- 7:22>> I can't read a lot. So I watched my
- 7:24mentor made me watch it.
- 7:26>> Who was your mentor? So Amrita ma'am was
- 7:29someone who kind of at that age when I
- 7:32was 13 14 kind of took me under her
- 7:35wings and yeah something she saw in me
- 7:37at that age I was very I was not
- 7:41ambitious at that time I would say I
- 7:43loved cricket I love batting nicely
- 7:45enjoy
- 7:49you know I didn't have like
- 7:54when she saw me and she saw the like I
- 7:56don't know what she saw join me, but she
- 7:58was like, "No, you're built for
- 8:00something else." And all of that stuff.
- 8:01And then she started teaching me the
- 8:04kind of right things to do in terms of
- 8:06fitness fielding. She was very strict
- 8:08with me at some point of my life. And I
- 8:12would wake up at 5 a.m.
- 8:17I would wake up at 5:00 a.m. compulsory.
- 8:20I had to do 12 sura namaskars. my one
- 8:23fitness routine. She had sent it to me
- 8:25uh like 30 second squad jump as a kid.
- 8:2830 seconds squat jump, 30 second
- 8:30burpees, 30 seconds mountain climber.
- 8:32Okay, five sets I had to compulsory do
- 8:34it.
- 8:34>> Nice.
- 8:35>> That was like morning. Then I start my
- 8:38stationary shadow batting all of those
- 8:40things and till 7:38 I had to do all of
- 8:42those things every day, day in day out
- 8:44for like 5 years. And very diligently I
- 8:47did it.
- 8:48>> I like never ever said like as I said
- 8:50someone makes me do it, I'll do
- 8:52And I was really really scared I should
- 8:55not upset her.
- 8:57>> And in those four five years like she
- 8:58taught me all the right things in terms
- 9:00of like say leading a team as well. She
- 9:03would make me sit down with a notebook
- 9:06watches test match wake up in the
- 9:08morning and just put down field sets
- 9:10watch me make me watch take me to ground
- 9:12and watch make me watch a live match and
- 9:14be like
- 9:16yeah know all those all those things and
- 9:18I had to tell her. So like kind of the
- 9:21cricketing knowledge what I got is what
- 9:22a lot from her and yeah she made me
- 9:26watch the video of secret
- 9:29made me do all of those things right
- 9:32like I am ICC number one batter that
- 9:36world cup winner all of that stuff put
- 9:38under the pillow sleep have a blank
- 9:41check
- 9:42>> yeah I don't know if you've seen secret
- 9:44>> no tell me tell me all of this
- 9:45>> okay
- 9:46>> so what was what did you write and put
- 9:48it under the pillow Hello. What did you
- 9:50do
- 9:50>> as a kid? You know, like she used to
- 9:52make me ride ICC player number one
- 9:55player like player of the year and all
- 9:57of stuff,
- 9:58>> batter of the number one ranked batter,
- 10:00which is pretty the best thing to
- 10:02achieve
- 10:04>> then world cup winner
- 10:06>> and yeah like there are three four I
- 10:08exactly I don't like these were the main
- 10:10things I to like write it on the whole
- 10:12page
- 10:13>> put it under the pill
- 10:14>> whole page like multiple times. Yeah,
- 10:15multiple times like and then I have to
- 10:17like sleep with it all those morning.
- 10:18>> And then you would put it under your
- 10:20pillow every day you would write it or
- 10:21just one time you write
- 10:22>> every night. Every night this is all
- 10:24every night. Four, five years I was a
- 10:25machine at that I and I still feel like
- 10:28if you work yourself right at 14 to 18
- 10:32you're good like in life you would not
- 10:35maybe but you'll be doing something good
- 10:37in life. So from 14 to 18 like four or
- 10:4014 to 19 four or five years you wrote a
- 10:42letter every day
- 10:44>> not a letter it's like a kind of a
- 10:46notebook which I had to write
- 10:48>> affirmations
- 10:49>> huh affirmations and then just like I'm
- 10:51going to
- 10:52>> it's like it's already happened I am huh
- 10:55sorry I am this I am that not that it
- 10:58will happen it has happened so I had to
- 11:00believe that I still I was playing state
- 11:02level and I'm like oh I'm world's best
- 11:04pattern so I had to believe that okay I
- 11:07I will I am going to be or I am already
- 11:10>> and then put it under the pillow and I
- 11:12used to find it so stupid and I still
- 11:14like I don't know I still don't know why
- 11:16I did it but
- 11:18>> kind of a lot of things in that came
- 11:20true also so which is then I was like I
- 11:23don't have complaints about it but at
- 11:25that time it was it felt like
- 11:32but then yeah she taught me a lot of
- 11:33right values also like
- 11:35>> and what else would you like
- 11:38manifestation letter. What is the other
- 11:40thing you were saying?
- 11:41>> Then I had to write goals. That's why I
- 11:44still write goals. I have
- 11:46>> like 7-day goal, a week, month goal.
- 11:49Like say if I'm developing a short by
- 11:51end of seven day, I want to learn this
- 11:53short
- 11:54>> or I have learned this.
- 11:55>> I have learned the short.
- 11:56>> Okay. You always talk that it has
- 11:58happened. It has happened. So you start
- 11:59believing and you start
- 12:00>> goal setting was a huge thing for her.
- 12:02Also that
- 12:02>> goal setting also you write in a way
- 12:05that which is it has happened to you.
- 12:07>> No goal setting was like more in a way
- 12:09where I want to get here.
- 12:10>> Okay.
- 12:11>> Yeah. Like 7 days I want to get here. 2
- 12:13weeks I want to get here. That was a lot
- 12:15at that time. Now I do maybe a monthly
- 12:18goal
- 12:19>> or a yearly goal. I still do that
- 12:21because I just feel like goals are
- 12:22something which are the reasons you wake
- 12:24up and you have that desire to do. and
- 12:28something like I don't remember what was
- 12:30it. I had to like write a blank check
- 12:32and put it on our photo wall or
- 12:35something like that and see it every
- 12:36day. I I don't know what what for what
- 12:39it was. I was a kid too.
- 12:40>> I was just doing what I was told to do
- 12:42like I don't know I I think you should
- 12:45see that secret or I'm sure you would
- 12:47have seen I'm sure you have seen it
- 12:50>> because it's a pretty famous thing.
- 12:53>> But why would you write a blank check?
- 12:54Like why would you put a blank check?
- 12:57Mommy, papa, huh?
- 12:58>> I wanted to buy a house for them because
- 13:00we were rented house. That was the only
- 13:02aim of my life.
- 13:02>> Okay.
- 13:04>> Did you ever write that on your paper
- 13:06that I want to
- 13:07>> Yeah. I want to buy a house for my mom
- 13:08then
- 13:09>> because I saw my mom like really really
- 13:12work hard to make us where we are or get
- 13:15us to where we are. So that I was always
- 13:17like
- 13:21I was like I'm telling you that kid was
- 13:23very like confident
- 13:25like just imagine 13year-old telling her
- 13:28mom
- 13:32just
- 13:32>> it happened. Yeah.
- 13:34>> Yeah.
- 13:36>> Actually I bought it at 17 only.
- 13:38>> Sweet 18 actually. So it was pretty
- 13:41cool. Yeah.
- 13:41>> So good. So
- 13:42>> yeah. So it was like a year later but
- 13:44yeah
- 13:45>> nice. so proud.
- 13:47>> So you would write that I I believe in
- 13:49by the way manifestation, visualization,
- 13:51all of these. I don't find them stupid
- 13:53at all.
- 13:54>> I don't
- 13:55>> at that point I found it very stupid
- 13:57because I was too chu
- 13:59>> but now I when I look back I just feel
- 14:03like yeah it was it was like very
- 14:05necessary like I feel like prepared for
- 14:08a lot of things.
- 14:11But it's true and by the way every
- 14:14person every athlete specifically who
- 14:16I've met or have read about they used to
- 14:18follow these certain things
- 14:19>> okay
- 14:20>> like Michael Jordan Michael Phelps your
- 14:23Jookovic
- 14:25>> everybody
- 14:27you name it and they have it like in
- 14:30women's if you look at right now Alien
- 14:32Goo she's killing it I don't know if you
- 14:33know her
- 14:34>> she's a women's ski player
- 14:36>> okay skier
- 14:36>> she's world famous right
- 14:39master believer or master manifestation
- 14:42like you just name people and they all
- 14:44have some kind of ritual
- 14:45>> so it's not stupid at all
- 14:50I also still do it uh but not like the
- 14:55secret but I do it in my own ways of my
- 14:58>> what is your way
- 15:02>> like goal setting is a huge thing for me
- 15:04>> one month and one year and do you have a
- 15:06long-term goal as
- 15:08I think I I gave away that.
- 15:10>> And do you have a goal attached to a
- 15:13timeline or just a goal?
- 15:14>> Just a goal. And my goals are not to do
- 15:16with um so I've realized this is a big
- 15:19change. I think that's a lot of big
- 15:21change which I had is I don't attach my
- 15:24goals to scoring a certain runs runs or
- 15:26winning world cup or winning a specific
- 15:29tournament.
- 15:31I think my goals are attached now to
- 15:33what I want to do in terms of how I how
- 15:35my day should look like or how my body
- 15:37should feel like or how my batting where
- 15:40I want my batting to be at. Give me an
- 15:42example
- 15:43>> like say like when two years back when I
- 15:46sat down and I was like okay I want to
- 15:50change these things in the next 10
- 15:52months I should stop eating
- 15:54>> sugar I have after that I should not
- 15:58feel like I've missed any sessions going
- 16:00into that tournament I have to feel like
- 16:03I have given everything I could even
- 16:05after this it doesn't work out it's fine
- 16:07I'll go back still work hard but I've
- 16:09given everything I could to get here at
- 16:11as well. So that's the feeling I wanted
- 16:13to get
- 16:14>> and
- 16:16yeah like so many things like like you
- 16:18just want to like say I I want to master
- 16:21a specific specific shot then I just
- 16:23feel like I'll give you give myself like
- 16:26that month or two and then I'll try to
- 16:29work work hard on that specific shot say
- 16:31I want to hit sixes at will which is not
- 16:33particularly my strength and then that's
- 16:36how then I will want to be at a months
- 16:38later that I want to do that and I I
- 16:41know that if I do that for a month, I'll
- 16:44end up doing that on 31st day. So
- 16:46>> interesting. And what what happens when
- 16:48you can't when you don't achieve your
- 16:50goal?
- 16:50>> It's okay. Put my head down, work hard
- 16:52again. That's cricket, you know. That's
- 16:54cricket which is taught me. Get out on
- 16:56zero, get out on 100. Just put your head
- 16:59down, get back to work. You get a 100
- 17:02also, you have to go back, do your ice
- 17:05bar, do your recovery sessions. Next day
- 17:07morning, you have to go still gym. You
- 17:08get out on zero. same routine. So, you
- 17:12know, it's just I feel goals are good,
- 17:14but it's not like the end of the world.
- 17:17>> Like I really do everything possible to
- 17:19get there. But if not, it's fine. I
- 17:22mean, I I'll just be like, okay, where
- 17:24have I gone wrong? That's a question
- 17:26which you need to ask yourself. Like I
- 17:27ask myself, then you know your answers.
- 17:30Mostly honest people, honest to
- 17:32yourself, people know your answer. I
- 17:34think everyone knows their answers. Some
- 17:35people accept it, some people don't. I
- 17:37think I have a very high acceptance of
- 17:39my own mistakes which is something which
- 17:43helps me a lot.
- 17:44>> Give me an example of the day where you
- 17:46made a mistake and tell me the mistake
- 17:50and then what did you do
- 17:51>> to fix or something.
- 17:52>> Okay. Not every time, but say sometimes
- 17:55you get out on 10 runs when you're
- 17:56batting extremely well and then you sit
- 17:58down and like
- 18:01and then you're like that mobility
- 18:03session you were lazy you didn't do that
- 18:07that is why this like you know you just
- 18:09you know you just know
- 18:11you just know and then it's like
- 18:13sometimes you people would like
- 18:18but there are some people who be like
- 18:22So, so I think I'm one of I'm the second
- 18:26part of it. Like I would know that.
- 18:30>> Nice. And what what was your biggest
- 18:31mistake? Let's say you said you were at
- 18:34the best time of your life. You were
- 18:36informed and still didn't work out. You
- 18:38stopped thinking about it.
- 18:40>> No, I did think in Dubai World Cup. But
- 18:42I remember the time I start taking
- 18:44actions. I forget what's happening.
- 18:46>> Okay.
- 18:46>> So, I've left the Dubai World Cup. The
- 18:48next morning I called my uh manager and
- 18:50like I need this this this things like
- 18:53you know we can't do these things now
- 18:55for the next whatever years I play
- 18:57cricket
- 18:58>> I can't be shooting before like I would
- 19:02give you like seven days slaps and then
- 19:03we'll arrange our shoots
- 19:05>> I can't be like a mad dog like I'm a
- 19:07cricketer at the end like I wouldn't
- 19:08like
- 19:10>> like my training is more important than
- 19:11anything else
- 19:12>> like they always prioritized it but
- 19:14sometimes you know you you have
- 19:20But you know I should not manage my
- 19:22shoot
- 19:25but now I got a lot more organized with
- 19:28that. Then I called him saying that I
- 19:30want this sort of people to help around
- 19:32me
- 19:33>> so that I sort myself up in in a in a
- 19:36way like training way, nutrition way,
- 19:38all of those things. I made that call
- 19:39for 10 minutes and I said next 7 days
- 19:42please get me these things. And that was
- 19:45like the night we knocked out got
- 19:46knocked out. Next morning 7 7 7 7 a.m. I
- 19:49made the call. I changed yoga and
- 19:51meditation was something which I was
- 19:53like literally running away from I was
- 19:57like
- 20:02then then I went I I did yoga. I did
- 20:07meditation. It changed me a lot.
- 20:09>> You do meditation?
- 20:10>> Yeah, I do meditation. I do
- 20:12>> worked out.
- 20:13>> Yeah, it did work out. It calmed me
- 20:15down.
- 20:16Got me extremely calm in a very
- 20:20different way like not even like a
- 20:22surface level like it actually calmed me
- 20:24down quite a lot. So that that big
- 20:27change I had to do and then once I've
- 20:29made those changes now for me then
- 20:31what's happened is not important.
- 20:34for people who have like I feel like who
- 20:36have the fight to make that change then
- 20:39they won't dwell on the past mistakes
- 20:42like if you keep keep crying and sitting
- 20:45on those mistakes it's I feel is what
- 20:48are you getting out of it you're not
- 20:50getting you're not improving yourself
- 20:51you're not getting better so so yeah
- 20:53that's one thing which like for me I
- 20:56never dwell on something for a very long
- 20:58time
- 20:58>> long period of time and what happens
- 21:00like you're saying that you were in the
- 21:04form of your life and you were playing
- 21:06cricket really well and yet then you
- 21:09couldn't perform and you got knocked out
- 21:11like what happens
- 21:12>> cricketing god
- 21:14>> no but like when you're in form and you
- 21:16still can't make runs like what is there
- 21:18what changes in your body and changes in
- 21:20your approach because you hear this a
- 21:23lot right like this person was in zone
- 21:27but he can't perform or she can't
- 21:28perform and we are watching from the TV
- 21:30and we are like yeah we were banking on
- 21:32her
- 21:33>> and she's not performing. What goes on
- 21:34in your head? Is it the pressure that
- 21:37because I've been playing so well, I
- 21:38need to play and then that messes up.
- 21:40What is it?
- 21:42>> Yeah, that's one part of it because you
- 21:44kind of build up that tournament in your
- 21:45head in a very different way and then
- 21:47you're just like, okay, I have to do I
- 21:49have to do I can't get anything wrong by
- 21:51till here. I can't get anything wrong.
- 21:53So what hap started happening was I I
- 21:55think I started getting really hard on
- 21:56myself with these sort of things where I
- 21:59need to do this, I need to do this, I
- 22:00need to do this, I can't go wrong in
- 22:03these things and again as I said to to
- 22:06you about my batting like I'm so such a
- 22:08mad perfectionist around it that
- 22:12then I start messing up a lot more in my
- 22:14head even more if it's a bigger
- 22:17tournament coming
- 22:20and then it kind of deteriorates It's a
- 22:23little more. So, so yeah, I think more
- 22:26than the pressure pressure to see as
- 22:29cricketers if you're batting well match
- 22:32big match in all it's a
- 22:35it's a first four five balls thing.
- 22:38>> Okay. Like after first four five balls
- 22:40you wouldn't feel it a lot like you know
- 22:43like when you like like first four five
- 22:46balls is the time where you kind of be
- 22:49before because bigger the match it's not
- 22:52the match day which is which feels
- 22:54pressure the
- 22:56>> the approach towards the match the night
- 22:58before that the morning before that is
- 23:00when you start if you you're stressing
- 23:02about it
- 23:03>> but once the match starts and the first
- 23:05three four balls happen
- 23:07>> you're not think oh this is the biggest
- 23:09match of my life you don't think all
- 23:11those things you know it's only the
- 23:13first four five balls where you have
- 23:15that jitters and nerves and if I would
- 23:17get out in the first four five balls I
- 23:20would have been like yes I have to work
- 23:21on my jitters but I would never get out
- 23:22on the first four five balls it was
- 23:24after that
- 23:25>> m
- 23:25>> that means the solution and all is not
- 23:27jitters or big pressure it's something
- 23:28different
- 23:30>> interesting
- 23:31>> like you know if you go and first ball
- 23:33you get out
- 23:34>> in a big match
- 23:35>> I would say okay maybe that is pressure
- 23:37Yeah, that's anxiety and anxiety,
- 23:39nervousness, nerves. You've played first
- 23:42five, six balls like whatever in
- 23:44whichever nerves you have, you've
- 23:45played,
- 23:46>> you've got the sixth ball of your
- 23:49innings,
- 23:50you not like you're not thinking about
- 23:53match occasion as much in your head.
- 23:56You're just thinking batting
- 23:58>> the next ball.
- 23:58>> Huh? Next ball. So, I don't think it was
- 24:01ever to do with the pressure or anything
- 24:03for me. It was more to do with the
- 24:05buildup for the tournament in my head
- 24:07than overthinking around it and then
- 24:09losing my feel overthinking about it and
- 24:12then when you're when as a batter when
- 24:14you're not feeling the way you want to
- 24:16feel because of what my batting is. It's
- 24:18more like a touch batting. It's not
- 24:19power batting. So if you don't feel the
- 24:22way you do
- 24:23it, it doesn't come in results. It's
- 24:26very hard. Then
- 24:27>> walk me through the day like walk me
- 24:29through the night before. Uh what was
- 24:32going in your head? No. No. You you said
- 24:34you were overthinking pressure stuff
- 24:36like that. Overinking overnight
- 24:49then I'm like
- 24:53because it's such a weird thing.
- 24:58It's like
- 25:01again it's not a form. It's again how
- 25:03you are your body's feeling. Sometimes
- 25:05your bottom hand is tired some and for
- 25:07feel and touch players it's very
- 25:09important for me at least it is very
- 25:11important. So, so yeah those seven days
- 25:14and then I start thinking a lot about it
- 25:16then I go back to the room and I'll
- 25:17think a lot about it try and change
- 25:19something and then something else
- 25:20happens then next day it's even worse
- 25:22batting then same then the chain happens
- 25:25until I approach the tournament it's
- 25:27gone so I at that time now of course I
- 25:30have said that it is okay it is fine
- 25:35>> don't overthink it's in last two years I
- 25:38think I've got that right
- 25:40>> m So even if I'm not feeling fine, it is
- 25:44okay. This one, two words, three words
- 25:46is has changed a lot for me.
- 25:48>> Is it same in the world cup as well?
- 25:51>> Yeah.
- 25:51>> Or is little different because you're
- 25:53the final match, world cup night. There
- 25:56must be some extra thought or extra
- 25:59pressure in your head or no like no this
- 26:01just another day.
- 26:02>> 10 15 minutes
- 26:04world cup whatever.
- 26:05>> Okay, let's let's do like take like me
- 26:07on the day of final match of the world
- 26:10cup let's say. Um, you have to walk me
- 26:13through that day like as if I'm there
- 26:14and like tell me what happened, when did
- 26:16you wake up, what did you do, what was
- 26:18the first thought, who did you meet, the
- 26:20team ritual, breakfast, like walk me
- 26:22through the entire day with details.
- 26:24>> When you wake up and you realize it's a
- 26:26big match day a little bit maybe if your
- 26:30heart is racing at 65, it will race at
- 26:3275 from that day.
- 26:34>> Date me like don't don't tell me what
- 26:36like tell me
- 26:36>> mornings I wake up for breakfast as
- 26:39usual.
- 26:39>> Okay. You woke up now we have an
- 26:41afternoon and evening matches
- 26:44>> go to world cup final
- 26:47I think we went to I went to breakfast
- 26:50everyone's families were there there
- 26:52partil right so
- 26:54>> at breakfast it felt like it's our floor
- 26:56everyone's mom dad's like literally it
- 26:58felt like one big Indian cricket family
- 27:01when I was here it was pretty cool
- 27:03>> uh like till I went till the breakfast I
- 27:05just felt like oh and then I saw
- 27:07everyone I was just so very happy about
- 27:10What was you said?
- 27:12>> Like I just woke up and I was like, "Oh,
- 27:13I just woke up finally." You know, I
- 27:15just felt it and then I was like
- 27:18and then I saw
- 27:19>> What time did you get up?
- 27:21>> Nicely woke up. I'm chill like that. 9
- 27:258:39
- 27:27I woke up freshen up.
- 27:37I think I started breakfast chilled with
- 27:39everyone 11 11:30 went back did my
- 27:43mobility routine uh half an hour
- 27:48little bit activation stuff took a
- 27:51shower ground it's a walking distance
- 27:53that we stayed at
- 27:56courtyard marit and it's like literally
- 27:57the div is just walking distance
- 28:00>> which I don't I love the stadium but I
- 28:02like 10 minutes drive to the stadium why
- 28:05>> for my music just it gets you in a in a
- 28:09zone like no you just feel like you
- 28:11should listen to two three songs. So for
- 28:13Dy Partil matches I used to start
- 28:15listening to songs on AirPods in room
- 28:17only. So like what song do I get?
- 28:22depends tour to tour
- 28:25love songs sad songs
- 28:29I'm more of that but akal to like tufan
- 28:33and all of that like you know full so
- 28:35depends on what zone or mood I am in
- 28:37>> so before going to the world cup we are
- 28:39listening a sad song
- 28:43>> I am I could I am pretty capable of
- 28:45doing that because I feel it calms me no
- 28:48like like slow songs not like sad also I
- 28:50would say Slow song.
- 28:51>> Have your favorite slow song. Slow song.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:54>> I big fan.
- 28:56>> Which one?
- 29:00seasonal.
- 29:03>> I think my alltime favorite of him would
- 29:06be
- 29:15world cup finals.
- 29:19I heard a lot of like this um South
- 29:21Indian entry songs, BGM songs like
- 29:24background music song
- 29:27was my go-to song for a very long time
- 29:30like I would feel like okay it doesn't
- 29:32suit my personal my problem and my
- 29:33person I think in my mind a certain way
- 29:36but in on like my personality is not
- 29:39such
- 29:39>> okay what do you think of yourself in
- 29:41>> I'm like a collar up and red one dude
- 29:44>> not dude like I'm just like one huh I'll
- 29:46fight everyone.
- 29:47>> Okay.
- 29:48>> And I'm like there I'll be playing a
- 29:50shot and smiling
- 29:52like I'm like you're not this I don't
- 29:54know sometimes what it is like
- 29:55>> so you're south Indian hero in your
- 29:57head.
- 29:57>> Yeah. Like you know like full like entry
- 30:00song with a gole and all but somehow it
- 30:02doesn't happen
- 30:04like even I get a 100 and I'll be like
- 30:06okay I'm just like
- 30:08>> jump and have a like hand like moment
- 30:12and I will like show to all of those
- 30:14things. Then what I do is I just remove
- 30:17helmet and just do this
- 30:19>> reality.
- 30:19>> So so yeah. So that I think I heard two
- 30:23three songs before going to the final
- 30:26>> then got into the bus
- 30:28>> which was 2 minutes bus drive
- 30:32>> and then rain happened. We had a rain
- 30:34delay for an hour which was stupid.
- 30:37>> I'm like
- 30:39as I said start is always very
- 30:43important.
- 30:46and then whatever happens happens.
- 30:50That's the toughest part of the match
- 30:52day any match day is the first approach
- 30:55towards the first three footballs
- 30:56because mentally it's like a like you're
- 30:59getting towards that right and you're
- 31:00doing everything towards that
- 31:02>> as a batter.
- 31:06So you just have to make sure that you
- 31:08are really calm about it. So rain
- 31:11happened and I'm like start
- 31:14then of course magically disappeared. We
- 31:16had a toss. We lost a toss. We we're
- 31:18batting first. I was like okay batting
- 31:20first team meeting before the match.
- 31:24>> The new thing I started a little soaking
- 31:26in the environment. Sometimes I go 5
- 31:28minutes uh before and I soak in the
- 31:31environment like so that I'm used to it.
- 31:33>> When I play I should not feel stressed.
- 31:36>> Okay. So first I enter I like kind of
- 31:37see and like like when it's loud and all
- 31:41I just try and soak it in and be
- 31:43comfortable around it because once
- 31:45you're comfortable you just feel like
- 31:47okay it's your space
- 31:48>> because once your heartbeat get
- 31:50>> it just feels normal
- 31:55I try and do it before only. So I was in
- 31:58my zone more.
- 31:59>> Has it happened with you before where
- 32:02you've not been able to soak in the
- 32:04environment and then
- 32:05>> 2017 World Cup final I think I got out
- 32:08third ball zero. I was 8 19 year old. I
- 32:10never knew what to do what happened till
- 32:12the World Cup started. I was already out
- 32:14on zero. I'm coming back and I'm like I
- 32:17didn't know what happened like
- 32:19>> because you couldn't take in the
- 32:20environment.
- 32:21>> Yeah. taken the environment did not do
- 32:23all of those things like you know I
- 32:25didn't make myself feel comfortable I
- 32:27just went to bat saw that it was first
- 32:29time women's cricket had 20 odd thousand
- 32:31people in lords at lords and that's my
- 32:34first match at lords
- 32:37everything happening at once I went and
- 32:39the third ball is like t zero out till I
- 32:42realized what's happening I was already
- 32:44out like
- 32:44>> so you were not focused on the batting
- 32:46you were focused on like
- 32:48>> I wouldn't say I was focused that it's
- 32:50just that Even if you're not focusing
- 32:52it, I feel it's more than avoiding it,
- 32:54you should just embrace it.
- 32:56>> At that time, I was avoiding it.
- 33:00>> Now I'm like, wow. You know, like, you
- 33:02know, that's how it's changed. Now I'm
- 33:04like, I embrace it. I'm like, it's fine.
- 33:07You know, all of those things. So that
- 33:09happened. I went to bat doing all of the
- 33:12things also. First four, five balls, I
- 33:13don't know what happened. Ball came my
- 33:16or didn't hit my I don't know. I didn't
- 33:18realize after fifth or sixth ball I was
- 33:20like ah ch and then then yeah I mean it
- 33:24was pretty cool after that what happened
- 33:26after 7 8 hours
- 33:28>> we won the world cup
- 33:29>> so what was going on in your head when
- 33:32you were going for the batting
- 33:37>> just I only tell myself watch the ball
- 33:39and play accordingly there's not too
- 33:41much I tell myself
- 33:43>> nothing but how do you get back like how
- 33:45do you get your heartbeat normal just by
- 33:48soaking in the environment you get.
- 33:49>> I try and do like three four deep
- 33:51breaths if at all. I feel sometimes a
- 33:54lot
- 33:54>> but very rarely I I'm pretty like like
- 33:58again a very chill person.
- 33:59>> What do you do like deep breath as in
- 34:01like you count
- 34:02>> like just like 3 seconds in 3 seconds
- 34:05out. Sometimes when I feel it
- 34:07>> sometimes if it's a D20 match and I
- 34:09played two three dot balls and then you
- 34:11have that pressure of getting that
- 34:14scoreboard going. So that time just to
- 34:16clear your mind at that time you want to
- 34:18play five shots sometimes I just and
- 34:21then I'm like okay watch the ball
- 34:23because still even that time the basics
- 34:26don't change no like the basics of
- 34:28batting don't change so I have to remind
- 34:30myself baba bigger the occasion you're
- 34:32still like the basics of batting
- 34:34watching the ball
- 34:35>> sometimes it's like too much pressure
- 34:38too much pressure man in the head not
- 34:39the match also but sometimes you feel
- 34:41like
- 34:42>> you played at lords now you played that
- 34:44test match
- 34:46And we hadn't played red wall first time
- 34:48at Lord. So and from T20 World Cup we
- 34:52just straight away went to. So I had to
- 34:53keep telling myself Baba must mask you
- 34:56know you don't do musty like you know
- 34:57after T20 you're playing test match
- 35:00>> and as opener you're like there you have
- 35:01to hit here you have to like play out.
- 35:03So sometimes I'm like I'm the best play
- 35:06according to so it's like some
- 35:08affirmation words for
- 35:09>> you tell yourself you talk to yourself.
- 35:11>> Yeah. If that's what I said if sometimes
- 35:13I feel like okay I have to get in a zone
- 35:15that days some days you are in that
- 35:17zone. So you it again depends on what
- 35:20day you're in
- 35:21>> and know when you're walking let's say
- 35:24you changed put the kit you're walking
- 35:26on the ground walking on the pitch till
- 35:29that time do you tell yourself anything
- 35:31do you talk to yourself?
- 35:34N
- 35:35>> I have that routine. Touch the ground.
- 35:38Go sideways twice. Side side sideways
- 35:40just twice. Three back flips.
- 35:44Look at the sun just near the 23 yards.
- 35:47Like just do that. And yeah, just start.
- 35:50And then first three balls in your head
- 35:52you're thinking you're thinking
- 35:56first.
- 35:58first three balls you like
- 36:02like what is first three because you
- 36:04said first three four balls are the most
- 36:05problematic. So
- 36:07>> I said I said like when it's a bigger
- 36:08match day
- 36:09>> for everyone you said.
- 36:10>> Yeah. For me it's not actually I'm like
- 36:13not like a very first three football
- 36:15persons.
- 36:21I don't know if I have some random stats
- 36:24I've got out on 70s 80s and 90s I don't
- 36:26know some number of times.
- 36:28>> X number of times.
- 36:30>> Yeah I think I would have had like 20
- 36:32odd extra centuries if I would have not
- 36:34like really done all those things. So
- 36:36but first two three balls just same
- 36:39thing watch the ball play accordingly
- 36:41okay
- 36:43and what happens at 80
- 36:46>> I am also still wondering what happens
- 36:49there was a year where I was not getting
- 36:51out on anymore and I had cracked it like
- 36:57I just feel it's cricket yeah I mean you
- 36:59can't overthink from some things you
- 37:06At that time it is sometimes like you're
- 37:08batting extremely well.
- 37:11It's not
- 37:24like that 50%.
- 37:29So in that you get out. M
- 37:39thank you very much. But I have realized
- 37:42I think
- 37:44cricket has its own way to answer your
- 37:46questions like you can do a lot of
- 37:48things right you can do lot of things
- 37:50here and there
- 37:51>> but sometimes when it has to come it
- 37:53will come when it doesn't have to come
- 37:55it wouldn't come and now I've accepted
- 37:58it that
- 37:59>> take it just put your head down do your
- 38:01work
- 38:02>> but how do you come in the zone then if
- 38:03let's say you are not in the zone
- 38:05>> zone form overrated word it's not like
- 38:09you're not inform your sometimes you're
- 38:11not batting the way you want to bat.
- 38:13Sometimes you're not you're batting well
- 38:15but some days your mind is running like
- 38:18a train.
- 38:19>> It's just like so many thoughts are
- 38:21coming.
- 38:23That is the day where maybe I feel I'm
- 38:26not in zone because the at my best I
- 38:29don't think I just watch the ball and
- 38:31react. That's the best I bet.
- 38:33>> Okay. But there are days where you like
- 38:39you start thinking the shot beforehand.
- 38:42>> That is when I feel I'm not in zone and
- 38:44that's when I have to just remind myself
- 38:46like what's the ball like you know
- 38:48that's how I want to do that day.
- 38:50>> Nice. Interesting. And do you have a
- 38:52superstition?
- 38:54>> I used to have many.
- 38:56>> Tell me.
- 38:58So generally I sit on the left side of
- 39:01the bus fourth seat
- 39:03>> but it's I don't it's superstition it's
- 39:04just got used to as a kid you enter
- 39:08and then it's just a thing
- 39:11>> then I should always enter from the left
- 39:14side of the so I open so the person is
- 39:18always on the right and I have to be on
- 39:19the left I broke that on WL final
- 39:24actually. Wow, what a day.
- 39:29And yeah, I'm like
- 39:39200 is a huge score to chase
- 39:42like right it's just enter and I was
- 39:46like anyways
- 39:52right and actually we chased it down so
- 39:55now it's nothing there like now I'll
- 39:56enter wherever it is left
- 39:59superstition then
- 40:01then
- 40:03I still have a little bit but I've
- 40:05changed a lot. I don't want the leg
- 40:07guard to be given at the first go.
- 40:10I don't think anyone has ever had that.
- 40:13So you go first thing and you ask for a
- 40:14leg guard your leg.
- 40:17>> So I don't like the umpire telling in
- 40:18the one go that's on your leg. I like so
- 40:21that's why I cast the bat a little
- 40:23further away and then she will or he
- 40:25will tell me to get the bat in
- 40:28>> to mark the leg guard. So I have to have
- 40:30it like twice thrice like I can't have
- 40:32it on the one go.
- 40:35>> Nice.
- 40:36>> Very strange. It is
- 40:37>> good.
- 40:38>> And I don't know if it's superstition or
- 40:42if I get out I tap the boundary three
- 40:44times.
- 40:45>> Yes. Completely. I don't know how it
- 40:47started
- 40:48>> after getting out.
- 40:49>> Yeah. superstition
- 40:57I don't know that's a that's a thing I
- 41:00don't know why it has happened and I
- 41:02think it's a more
- 41:05your father and mother do they have a
- 41:07superstition
- 41:09>> mommy used to not watch for the longest
- 41:11time she said
- 41:14problem
- 41:16and then you know mommies are
- 41:18you
- 41:20So she used to she used to not watch.
- 41:23She now tries to watch but bigger
- 41:24matches she can't watch. She gets very
- 41:26nervous like World Cup final. My mom
- 41:29she's like she told that firstly tickets
- 41:33problem but she's like I want one ticket
- 41:35for myself. I'm not coming to watch the
- 41:37match but I'll come to see you guys lift
- 41:39the trophy. So I want the ticket to
- 41:41enter. So she watched. She didn't come
- 41:44for the match. She she was she was at
- 41:46our hotel room from up like you could
- 41:49see the ground
- 41:50>> she was up there 15 minutes 10 minutes I
- 41:53think when we were supposed to win she
- 41:55came down
- 41:57so that's like that's my mom my father
- 42:00my brother is very like serious you'll
- 42:01watch it very seriously papa is chill
- 42:05I don't think they have I'll ask them
- 42:06next time
- 42:07>> do they have any superstition or
- 42:08anything
- 42:09>> yeah I'll have to ask them
- 42:11>> but you call them after
- 42:12>> match before match I call
- 42:14When I sit in the bus, first thing I
- 42:15call is mom, dad.
- 42:17>> Then they have a particular way of
- 42:18saying all the best like with a tone. My
- 42:22mom has a tone to say all the best and
- 42:24my father has a tone as well.
- 42:26>> So they that's their superstition I
- 42:27think like when they wish me they will
- 42:30say nothing just all the best.
- 42:33That's it. Like sometimes like in UK
- 42:35you're playing and
- 42:38enjoy like it's a two-minute call but
- 42:41>> I don't remember a match I've played
- 42:43without calling them. Yeah, it's always
- 42:45as a kid I've always called him even
- 42:46now.
- 42:48>> But it's just a ritual since years you
- 42:50have made it.
- 42:51>> Yeah. I I don't know when it started or
- 42:53what happened but it's for the longest
- 42:56time for the last 15 20 years I remember
- 42:58going for a math and calling them.
- 43:00>> Nice. That's a good thing.
- 43:01>> Yeah. That's a nice thing. Getting a
- 43:02blessing. Getting blessings from my
- 43:04parents before match is pretty cool.
- 43:05>> Hey, good. Who between both of them who
- 43:08sacrificed most for you?
- 43:10>> I think both in their own ways have
- 43:12sacrificed for me. But mom in particular
- 43:16sacrifice but she like because of those
- 43:20whole problems of family. We kind of had
- 43:22to change our house and then of course
- 43:25father was part of the joint business we
- 43:27had. So when we had nothing like he
- 43:30didn't know what to do a lot and then my
- 43:32mom used to start doing ex exhibition
- 43:35she was very creative and that's how she
- 43:37actually raised us and maybe she used to
- 43:41always she used to work there and again
- 43:44cook as well take care of the house so
- 43:47yeah in that ways I think she's kind of
- 43:49sad but never
- 43:52like
- 43:59They tried their best to get whatever
- 44:02best we could. And when did you realize
- 44:03that she's sacrificing or she's like
- 44:06working really hard to make sure that
- 44:08you
- 44:09>> always because I used to help her with
- 44:11all those things
- 44:12>> from day one you like from very early on
- 44:14you realize only when you start
- 44:16realizing I understood
- 44:19you know
- 44:23but I knew my mom is like really like
- 44:26working so much. I used to help her do
- 44:29table mats go for her exhibitions. I
- 44:32used to stand in the exhibitions like
- 44:33it's like the exhibition halls of the
- 44:35like used to go to other cities used to
- 44:37take the stuff and I was I I've done
- 44:40abbecas
- 44:41>> you see mass that so I've done all the
- 44:43eight levels so my math is pretty good
- 44:45>> nice
- 44:46>> so I I so I used to have like the clips
- 44:48as well hair clips so my calculation
- 44:54I tell auntie auntie 400 what so I've
- 44:57done all of those I've seen her like
- 44:59work really hard so it was like for For
- 45:01me it was always like you know I want to
- 45:03give a very nice life to them.
- 45:05>> And they used to always encourage you to
- 45:07play cricket right? They were very
- 45:09supportive but relatives were not in the
- 45:12beginning.
- 45:22Till that point anyone had not even
- 45:23heard like women playing cricket and
- 45:26start mate was like when I played school
- 45:29level and all we traveled from a general
- 45:33boogie and all of that and
- 45:35>> for a maradi family it's a little like
- 45:38like
- 45:44all those like I would also I still feel
- 45:46it's like genuine concern concerns also
- 45:48like
- 45:51but like genuine concerns also key how
- 45:53will she manage she's just nine or 11
- 45:56like mom wanted me to play sports but
- 46:00she was very keen on tennis
- 46:02>> because at that time against sa miza was
- 46:04a huge impact
- 46:06>> and single individual sports she wanted
- 46:09me to do individual sports plus women's
- 46:12tennis was lot famous than women's
- 46:13cricket at that time way bigger you knew
- 46:16Sarina Williams you knew Maria Sharapoa
- 46:18they were like big names she wanted me
- 46:20to do that was and I
- 46:22>> there was someone to look up to. Yeah.
- 46:24>> Yeah. Because there was at that time I
- 46:26didn't know a lot of women cricketers.
- 46:28You don't know what's happening. So uh
- 46:31so yeah I think my mom wanted me to play
- 46:33sports but tennis more but very early
- 46:36she understood batting
- 46:39so I used to be like
- 46:44so that's how then they were like pretty
- 46:46cool with it and then it after two three
- 46:48years so it became like they are
- 46:49dreaming that
- 46:50>> nice I should like
- 46:52>> what would they say like when I was
- 46:55reading again somewhere relatives
- 46:59This is all every relative talks like
- 47:02mommy is also like me
- 47:13know they were very like but the best
- 47:15thing never came to us what happens
- 47:17problem
- 47:20but papa how would he respond
- 47:22>> same I think papa though he doesn't care
- 47:25I think my family in general they not
- 47:28very like
- 47:32that's why they've let me like just be
- 47:36>> nice
- 47:36>> like I I could take my own decisions at
- 47:39any point in my life and they
- 47:42they're all worried is my happiness and
- 47:45my wellbeing
- 47:46>> and if that is happening yeah if that is
- 47:49happening they don't care if they're
- 47:50upsetting the world they're upsetting
- 47:52the relents
- 47:57>> that is So good. So that's a very that's
- 47:59luck.
- 48:00>> That's luck.
- 48:01>> That's absolute luck.
- 48:02>> Like they only care is about me and B. I
- 48:05have to be happy.
- 48:08>> Yeah.
- 48:08>> Which is so rare cuz there are every
- 48:12parent wants their kids wellbeing and
- 48:14happiness. But there are some parents
- 48:17who care about way more than anything
- 48:20else. And they're just so sad.
- 48:21>> It's a very normal thing. I feel it's a
- 48:23very normal. They would like again I
- 48:26don't know why it happens but they would
- 48:29do a certain way be a certain way
- 48:30because what people will think and all
- 48:32but yeah I have never even been raised
- 48:35in that environment like
- 48:42you know
- 48:44for me it was always like no like you
- 48:46know you you want to do what you you got
- 48:49to do what you got to do kind of a thing
- 48:51like
- 48:56I don't care. I did still.
- 48:58>> But you said like I don't care still
- 49:01like
- 49:01>> No, but the kid version of you didn't
- 49:04care at all. But today
- 49:13Right. But uh yeah, I I don't think I
- 49:16still care about people think what will
- 49:18happen.
- 49:19>> Never.
- 49:20>> I think it's just a like with now social
- 49:23media just a 20day thing.
- 49:2520
- 49:26>> 15 days
- 49:32like if you win also you lose also. It's
- 49:34just a 20 15 20 day thing, right?
- 49:36>> You have a 30inut rule which is
- 49:39>> Yeah, it's a 30-minut rule. I don't
- 49:40dwell on anything more than 30 minutes.
- 49:43It's not a rule but
- 49:45>> but you can make it one.
- 49:46>> Yeah. So it's a good rule.
- 49:48>> It's a good rule to give in a playbook
- 49:50of Smithy Mandana mindset playbook.
- 49:52>> I don't know mindset
- 49:55there. It can be a great rule. Let the
- 49:58world actually know this.
- 49:59>> Yeah. It's a like I go back and it's
- 50:02like a in my mind stop 30 minutes but
- 50:06like I wouldn't dwell on anything in
- 50:08life not only cricket anything in life
- 50:1130 40 minutes
- 50:15>> I think I've got up done
- 50:18yeah anything happens I've got
- 50:19>> Do you have emotions do you let yourself
- 50:23>> I think I don't have a lot of emotions
- 50:27>> do you allow yourself to feel
- 50:29>> even when You're alone, let's say, not
- 50:31in front of public. Let's say this is a
- 50:32very public version of you.
- 50:34>> No, no, of course I do feel and I have
- 50:36those emotions.
- 50:37>> You're not numb or do you feel that
- 50:38you've gotten numb?
- 50:40>> So, I could go quiet, but like crying,
- 50:45sadness is something which I don't
- 50:46relate myself a lot to. Yeah, I don't
- 50:50know why, but it's very weird. But
- 50:53there'll be people around me crying
- 50:56about something and I would just have
- 50:58extremely practical approach to that.
- 51:05>> Okay.
- 51:06>> Because I feel I think it's a blessing
- 51:08some people who can cry because I don't
- 51:10cry as like quickly
- 51:13>> and I just feel like you should let the
- 51:15person be them. I'm not a huge believer
- 51:19who
- 51:20or and there's no written success path
- 51:24or any path
- 51:25>> and what is success I mean people
- 51:27success actually success is being happy
- 51:30no like it's not about like what people
- 51:34have made success to be success I feel
- 51:36success is actually just
- 51:38>> waking up having a good 8 hours sleep
- 51:41and being happy within your own self and
- 51:44I feel if someone wants to let out their
- 51:46emotions do that and if I am I what I am
- 51:49I can be that but I do feel on days
- 51:52where those self-doubts and all those
- 51:54things come but again like 30 minutes
- 51:56and I'll start doing something else.
- 51:59>> Do you cry?
- 52:01>> Maybe bathroom sometimes but
- 52:05bathrooms and shower and sometimes yeah
- 52:07maybe front of maybe one or two people
- 52:09of like I feel like
- 52:12>> when was the last time you cried? Mm-
- 52:16Good question.
- 52:19I don't remember.
- 52:22You know, I cry for movies.
- 52:24>> I don't cry for my real life.
- 52:26>> Okay.
- 52:26>> If I watch a movie, I cry.
- 52:29So I think I was watching Mustafir Cafe
- 52:31and it just caught me emotional, happy,
- 52:33emotional and I cried.
- 52:35>> Why? I also got very emotional at movie.
- 52:37I don't know like
- 52:39>> very amishaf
- 52:42very nice not even I got very happy
- 52:44emotionally I was like yeah man I also
- 52:45want to do something like just leave
- 52:48everything just go open your own cafe
- 52:51>> I took right for
- 52:51>> Prii
- 52:54no I was
- 52:54>> like you know that I mean the character
- 52:56Priy I felt bad for her I was like just
- 52:59emotions
- 53:05like happy emotions so cool like you
- 53:07know just away from the world away from
- 53:09everything just go on do your own bit
- 53:12like I think after cricket that's me
- 53:14like you know
- 53:16>> not seeing not like just
- 53:17>> you want to be alone away
- 53:18>> alone means just in your cafe halfway
- 53:21there
- 53:21>> yeah yeah just being whatever wherever I
- 53:24would be just like because again I'm not
- 53:26a very social person
- 53:27>> so that's how
- 53:28>> but if you will see something in the
- 53:30movie you will cry about that in
- 53:33bathroom
- 53:34>> no no I'll cry there only so I remember
- 53:36crying crying for cafe in UK when I was
- 53:39watching it.
- 53:40>> Yeah, that's the last time I cried.
- 53:45No,
- 53:45>> you said like
- 53:48if you feel like you know some matches
- 53:52hurt you,
- 53:53>> some matches hurt you know like
- 53:54>> what was the last match that hurt you?
- 53:56>> See Dubai really hurted me like World
- 53:59Cup hurt necessarily. I I did cry a
- 54:02little bit after that.
- 54:07this World Cup we could not make it to
- 54:09the semis. Did that that hurt me? Not
- 54:12necessarily I cried but I did it hurt me
- 54:14but there are a few matches where you
- 54:15feel like I should have like
- 54:20>> and what hurts you your own performance
- 54:22or team's performance who do you blame
- 54:25>> first you should always start with
- 54:26yourself
- 54:28like that's like that's how you have to
- 54:31be
- 54:32>> first you should start about your own
- 54:34self what you could have done better if
- 54:37you are the one who's like
- 54:40means you only don't have expectations
- 54:41of that you could win that match.
- 54:44Fair. So I think I start with my own
- 54:46self first
- 54:50then maybe think a little bit about the
- 54:52team how like
- 54:55this person would have played like what
- 54:57we could have done better as a team
- 55:03like
- 55:05but I don't think I'm not necessarily
- 55:08like I would go to a press conference
- 55:09and name anyone nameropping
- 55:13like you're a team, you should back each
- 55:17other and like
- 55:18>> you win as a team. You don't
- 55:20>> you can criticize the performance. You
- 55:22can criticize that okay this went wrong.
- 55:25This should have gotten better. We could
- 55:27not prepare whatever job be but name
- 55:30dropping is something which I'm not big
- 55:32fan of.
- 55:33>> Fair which is the right approach. You
- 55:35win as a team, you lose as a team.
- 55:36>> You lose as a team and then first
- 55:38introspect within yourself. Do you feel
- 55:40responsible
- 55:42>> for a lot of things?
- 55:44>> Yeah, of course.
- 55:44>> Because you you use certain vocabulary
- 55:46which is very interesting. Like almost
- 55:48every time you say like when when you
- 55:51were speaking about your mentor, you
- 55:53said the first thought was I should not
- 55:55upset her,
- 55:56>> right? When you were talking about your
- 55:57mom and dad,
- 56:00then you with the team as well.
- 56:04Do you feel like do you have this
- 56:05constant feeling of
- 56:07>> this is my one big problem that you know
- 56:09I start I like blame myself first a lot
- 56:11about everything or I feel responsible
- 56:13for that person as well a lot
- 56:16>> which is a good thing also a bad thing
- 56:18also
- 56:19>> why is it a good thing and why is that a
- 56:20bad thing
- 56:21>> good thing that I'm not putting things
- 56:22on like anyone I'm being a good person
- 56:25like technically
- 56:27>> bad things is sometimes like which now I
- 56:29have changed a lot that you don't let
- 56:31that person take decisions like because
- 56:34they have to also learn from their own
- 56:36>> like mistakes be your parents your
- 56:38friends your teammates whoever so that's
- 56:41something which I think I've learned now
- 56:43with the leadership roles with WPL and
- 56:45everything that you know you you just
- 56:49let them be
- 56:51guide them here and there but what they
- 56:54do is not your responsibility like I I
- 56:58don't know how do I explain it because
- 57:00what I am what I am because of my
- 57:02mistakes
- 57:03And if I kind of protect them again and
- 57:05again about their mistakes, they're
- 57:07never going to grow.
- 57:09>> Then they'll start being dependent. And
- 57:11you need leaders in your team.
- 57:14>> You don't want someone who's following
- 57:16someone. You just want leaders because
- 57:1715 leaders is great. Leaders in a sense
- 57:20in your in their own life.
- 57:23>> So So yeah, again, I've changed that
- 57:26quite a lot now.
- 57:27>> Okay.
- 57:29What's uh how do you think about
- 57:31leadership?
- 57:35>> See I I I was always a captain as a kid
- 57:39and I started leading Maharashtra team
- 57:41when I was 16.
- 57:43>> Uh like the senior senior side I was
- 57:45leading when I was 16.
- 57:47>> Okay. And like I never knew but I I
- 57:51think I started enjoying it as well
- 57:53because
- 57:55like I feel
- 57:57I feel I think like
- 58:00that that sometimes uh you know the
- 58:04preparation part in terms of leader
- 58:06leadership the preparation towards the
- 58:08game I think that whole process is
- 58:10something which
- 58:11>> I really really enjoy a lot and uh and
- 58:14yeah I mean of course I've got privilege
- 58:17to WPs and I've been vice captain for a
- 58:20very long time. So, so yeah, you've been
- 58:22in and around and I think I really enjoy
- 58:24it.
- 58:24>> Doesn't that scare you?
- 58:26>> Captainship.
- 58:27>> Yeah, the pressure of being a captain.
- 58:30>> I mean, you play for India anyways. You
- 58:33>> there's an extra pressure of being a
- 58:35captain. No, I'm sure there is.
- 58:37>> See, yeah, there is answerability more
- 58:39for sure. what decisions you take win
- 58:42and loss but I feel you have I think you
- 58:45you should be able to take it in a way
- 58:47where if you are accepting it you have
- 58:49to take it and I think I really enjoy
- 58:52that part as I said it's not just that
- 58:54pressure part and all but I just feel
- 58:56like I really enjoy
- 58:58um getting to the game doing the
- 59:00analysis matchups and you know who to
- 59:03bowl what's happening what's the best
- 59:05combinations how the wicket is looking
- 59:07how's the ground and all of those things
- 59:09And my favorite part of WPL is actually
- 59:12planning for auction. It's it's pretty
- 59:13fun. It's like like what team
- 59:15combinations you you're looking at. And
- 59:18with all of that, when you know you've
- 59:19done the hard work, even as a captain is
- 59:21a hard work. You've done that hard work,
- 59:23results don't come. Then you have to
- 59:24take the criticism for sure. But again,
- 59:26it's like batting.
- 59:28>> You do the hard work, but you can get
- 59:30out on zero.
- 59:32And you do the batting, you do the hard
- 59:34work, you can get a 100. It's same with
- 59:36captainship. And I think I I treat it as
- 59:40a third skill for me because I don't
- 59:43bowl. It's like batting fielding and
- 59:45third skill is captainship. So I treat
- 59:48is at that like you're going to get good
- 59:50things and bad things with it.
- 59:51>> But it may becomes natural to you
- 59:53because you're in general as a person
- 59:56you are somebody who's like always
- 59:57taking accountability always making sure
- 1:00:00that everyone is before me.
- 1:00:03>> That's true actually. And uh that's
- 1:00:06always I've grown up like that. As I
- 1:00:07said, I think the answer question you
- 1:00:10asked me maybe the answer was because I
- 1:00:12was leading teams always as a 16 year
- 1:00:14old. I was always leading teams and as a
- 1:00:16captain you're probably the last person
- 1:00:19on the list though you are the first on
- 1:00:21the list but you what you want is the
- 1:00:22last.
- 1:00:23>> You are there for what people want.
- 1:00:26>> True. So I think that is where that
- 1:00:29quality has also come to me because like
- 1:00:32at a at a age of 16 17 to throw in a
- 1:00:34senior leadership like kind of a thing
- 1:00:37>> was something very like
- 1:00:39>> and I think I was 21 22 when I was vice
- 1:00:41captain for the Indian team also for D20
- 1:00:43side.
- 1:00:44>> So I was like at that point you can't be
- 1:00:47thinking about yourself because even if
- 1:00:49you've had a bad match I can't cry. I
- 1:00:52should be making I should make sure that
- 1:00:54I'm like helping everyone out. So that's
- 1:00:56how it's come I think as a kid.
- 1:00:58>> Ah as a as a kid since since you were a
- 1:01:01kid you've been the elder
- 1:01:04>> elder sister you've been in the junior
- 1:01:06team actually become captain in senior
- 1:01:08team.
- 1:01:09>> Yes.
- 1:01:10>> Yeah bunch of things. So you've been
- 1:01:12prepar getting prepared for all of this
- 1:01:13since very long.
- 1:01:15>> I think God prepares you and gives you
- 1:01:17at the right time. I again I believe in
- 1:01:19that a lot. Do you have this habit of
- 1:01:21making people dependent on you? Huh?
- 1:01:23Because no, you'll always be the I'm the
- 1:01:25big sister. I'm the person in the house.
- 1:01:28I'm this like don't worry.
- 1:01:32All of that. Do you have that?
- 1:01:33>> Yeah, I do have that.
- 1:01:36Yeah, I do have that a lot. Um,
- 1:01:40yeah. I mean, I used to have that a lot,
- 1:01:42but now I I think in the last one two
- 1:01:45years I've changed a lot. Now I don't
- 1:01:47feel that anymore. like someone comes
- 1:01:50with something also I'll give them a
- 1:01:51very practical and cricket and you
- 1:01:53figure out your way
- 1:02:00okay I'll stand there make them make
- 1:02:03sure that they are fine about it and all
- 1:02:05of that I'll still do that in my own
- 1:02:07ways but not very like that that person
- 1:02:10should not think I helped them it should
- 1:02:12be more in a way where they fought their
- 1:02:14own battle I was there
- 1:02:16>> so that's a very different there are two
- 1:02:18very different things.
- 1:02:19>> Yeah.
- 1:02:20>> So when you're just there and they are
- 1:02:21fighting their own battle and you're
- 1:02:22just there, it just feels that they know
- 1:02:26that next time it comes I can fight it
- 1:02:29because
- 1:02:31then they don't know what to do now.
- 1:02:32True. So now I think I've changed that.
- 1:02:34>> You've changed that. And how did you
- 1:02:36realize that?
- 1:02:39I think life only.
- 1:02:42>> Okay.
- 1:02:46>> But you were like that since you were a
- 1:02:48kid.
- 1:02:49>> Ah, it was very um like even if I have a
- 1:02:52bigger brother, I was always like elder
- 1:02:54sister to him.
- 1:02:54>> So it was always like even my friends
- 1:02:56who are my same age always be like a
- 1:02:59mother to them like me. I don't know why
- 1:03:01it was there but it was always there.
- 1:03:03But now I don't think now I'm chill
- 1:03:06about it. Do you put other people before
- 1:03:08you?
- 1:03:09>> I think so. That's Yeah, I do that a
- 1:03:12lot.
- 1:03:15>> They should.
- 1:03:16>> Yeah, because what happens with
- 1:03:18unemotional people? No, like me.
- 1:03:20>> I'm like I'll take care of their
- 1:03:22emotions.
- 1:03:25>> It's like I will be fine. So that is
- 1:03:28something which happens a lot to me that
- 1:03:30I'll always take care of like everyone's
- 1:03:34emotions around me and everyone knows
- 1:03:36that I'll be fine you know that way.
- 1:03:38>> So it happens a lot with me.
- 1:03:39>> And if do you also feel like let's say
- 1:03:42if mom's getting let's say sad about
- 1:03:45something oh I should make her happy and
- 1:03:47I'll make I'll make sure that she'll get
- 1:03:48happy. Do you get that?
- 1:03:52>> And then dad also and then you wouldn't
- 1:03:54or brother also. Cuz like you feel like
- 1:03:56you're responsible to make sure
- 1:03:57everyone's happy around you.
- 1:03:58>> Yeah. Because if someone is sad around
- 1:04:00me, I feel like I need to do something.
- 1:04:02You know,
- 1:04:05>> this is I'm same
- 1:04:07>> like I put other people.
- 1:04:15>> Putting everyone before you is not a
- 1:04:18very good thing. I do that a lot and
- 1:04:20that's why I put myself last.
- 1:04:24There are probably two or three
- 1:04:26decisions only in my entire life where
- 1:04:29I've been selfish
- 1:04:32>> and I'm guilty about all of them. Like I
- 1:04:34can I know exactly the two specific
- 1:04:37decisions I've taken where I've I was
- 1:04:39like I'm selfish and I'm just going to
- 1:04:41take care of my happiness. And I'm still
- 1:04:43guilty. think about it being years
- 1:04:47thinking
- 1:04:49>> but I am that person like I would want
- 1:04:52everyone to be happy around me
- 1:04:54>> even if I'm shooting my team is there
- 1:04:57like if someone is sad or angry I'll
- 1:04:59make sure like they're okay fine about
- 1:05:02it
- 1:05:03>> yeah just a very inbuilt thing and I
- 1:05:06don't know why it is but
- 1:05:13I mean meditation internalize. As I
- 1:05:16meditate, I'm blank.
- 1:05:17>> Okay.
- 1:05:18>> Very
- 1:05:19>> you're not thinking about patterns and
- 1:05:21reflections and things like that.
- 1:05:23>> The person who was taking meditation
- 1:05:24also got a little like
- 1:05:27you're surprised that okay I've not done
- 1:05:29meditation. It's a good thing she said
- 1:05:30that you don't
- 1:05:32>> I would think like I'm drowning
- 1:05:33somewhere and all that but not life
- 1:05:35problems or life stuff. I don't remember
- 1:05:37I meditated and I've thought of cricket
- 1:05:40or anything in the life at all
- 1:05:42>> because very yeah I don't know it's a
- 1:05:45god
- 1:05:45>> it's a it's a very good thing so I was
- 1:05:48exactly like you meditation and all that
- 1:05:51is not for me
- 1:05:53but I started breath work that was like
- 1:05:56one step closer to
- 1:05:58>> you know actually breath work I find a
- 1:05:59little boring than meditation meditation
- 1:06:01is
- 1:06:02>> better for
- 1:06:04How
- 1:06:06breath work is also nice but it's a
- 1:06:08little taxing.
- 1:06:09>> Meditation is relaxing.
- 1:06:12>> I enjoy my breath work a lot. I've very
- 1:06:14recently started like probably couple of
- 1:06:17months
- 1:06:19>> and very good like I' I've seen my state
- 1:06:22being calmer and the same I feel
- 1:06:26like I'll think about 20 things. this is
- 1:06:28this is not like overthink but like
- 1:06:30always on the go like this needs to be
- 1:06:32done this needs to be done but when I'm
- 1:06:34doing a breath work my breath work coach
- 1:06:37also asked me like why what were you
- 1:06:39thinking of I was nothing I was almost
- 1:06:41sleeping
- 1:06:44one thing it's not
- 1:06:46>> it's a one thing then that we are in
- 1:06:49present mode
- 1:06:50>> very present like I I think about
- 1:06:53something so these thoughts also let's
- 1:06:56say something where I've Being selfish
- 1:06:58example, it'll come for me. It'll come
- 1:07:00to me for like 20, 30, 40 minutes.
- 1:07:04>> You also have 30 minutes somewhat.
- 1:07:07>> You also have a 30 minutes then
- 1:07:09>> and then it'll be gone. Then I'll be on
- 1:07:11to the next thing.
- 1:07:17>> Yeah. I I don't know what will happen
- 1:07:19thinking about it. It's not that things
- 1:07:21are going to change. Live with it. So
- 1:07:25>> but I don't coming back to the point of
- 1:07:28where it's like not doing things for
- 1:07:30yourself is often
- 1:07:34is is is a question that because I ask
- 1:07:37lot of questions of people I I see this
- 1:07:39>> like cricket for myself which is pretty
- 1:07:41cool like you know you do podcast for
- 1:07:43yourself.
- 1:07:44>> Agreed. I mean
- 1:07:47large body of a life you're doing it for
- 1:07:49yourself. Like I bat I and I don't think
- 1:07:52anything in life can make me happier
- 1:07:54than batting
- 1:07:55>> and I bat every day.
- 1:07:56>> So that's what I'm doing in my life.
- 1:07:58There are so many people even around you
- 1:08:00that
- 1:08:02>> that basic work they don't do what they
- 1:08:05love.
- 1:08:07>> True.
- 1:08:09And I think we could also make people
- 1:08:11happy or do what we could is because our
- 1:08:14basic work is the work which we love the
- 1:08:17most.
- 1:08:19>> That's a good perspective.
- 1:08:20>> Yeah. And I don't think I need any
- 1:08:22selfcare more than that.
- 1:08:24>> I agree. Now
- 1:08:25>> like when I bat
- 1:08:27I you just go in a very happy zone and I
- 1:08:30just feel like nothing can match this.
- 1:08:33No one can match this. Leave nothing. No
- 1:08:35one can match this. And
- 1:08:38what else you do more? No. Like
- 1:08:40>> bang on.
- 1:08:40>> Yeah.
- 1:08:41>> Yeah. There's no self-care which can
- 1:08:43make me happier than this.
- 1:08:44>> Yeah. That's it then. Yes. You're doing
- 1:08:46this.
- 1:08:46>> So this is Yeah. So I'm the most selfish
- 1:08:48here. I do this for myself.
- 1:08:51>> Like there are people who leave what
- 1:08:52they want to do for someone like parents
- 1:08:55or people
- 1:08:56>> for some responsibility they have.
- 1:08:57>> They would do that. And then I would be
- 1:08:59like okay that's very scary.
- 1:09:01>> You're doing things for other people
- 1:09:03because you're not happy within them. I
- 1:09:05could do things for other people because
- 1:09:07very happy within myself.
- 1:09:10>> I don't think God would have made or I
- 1:09:13would have been able to do only that for
- 1:09:15people if I was not happy. So I don't
- 1:09:18think it's a very kind of a selfless or
- 1:09:20selfish. It's a you are a content like
- 1:09:23you're content with your
- 1:09:25>> it is what it is. Yeah, it is.
- 1:09:27>> It makes it makes a lot of sense. But
- 1:09:30now I'm thinking like would
- 1:09:34would I be the same person where I'm
- 1:09:37putting other people first if I was not
- 1:09:38doing this. I think my answer would be
- 1:09:41yes because I was
- 1:09:43>> yeah I mean
- 1:09:43>> before that I was exact I was still the
- 1:09:46kind of person
- 1:09:46>> maybe you would have got frustrated and
- 1:09:48stopped it or
- 1:09:49>> I haven't I still put other people
- 1:09:51>> still having this you don't know your
- 1:09:53life if you didn't have this
- 1:09:54>> I have this fair I would have stopped at
- 1:09:57some point
- 1:09:57>> yeah I would have maybe not been this
- 1:09:59person if cricket or god or batting
- 1:10:03would have not given me what it has
- 1:10:05you
- 1:10:06>> know and all the frustrations in life
- 1:10:10around everyone comes because that basic
- 1:10:13thing they're not happy with.
- 1:10:14>> True.
- 1:10:15>> So I'm very happy
- 1:10:16>> this I am also very happy. I would have
- 1:10:19been very frustrated as a man
- 1:10:21>> and then
- 1:10:21>> if I was not doing this
- 1:10:22>> and that will add add up pile up to you
- 1:10:25not being helpful
- 1:10:27>> like
- 1:10:27>> yeah yeah
- 1:10:28>> at some point right it would not come
- 1:10:30maybe 5 years 10 years but it will
- 1:10:35>> you know but yeah I think it's also to
- 1:10:38do with because we are very content and
- 1:10:40happy people in our own professional
- 1:10:42space
- 1:10:42>> true you know in fact that is that is so
- 1:10:45funny in fact whenever I talk to my
- 1:10:47cousins or or my friends that's usually
- 1:10:50one of the first let's say my
- 1:10:54prerequisites or advices which I tell my
- 1:10:57you know my people around me it's like
- 1:10:59if you are thinking of this partner as
- 1:11:02your partner for life just make sure do
- 1:11:05they have something that they where
- 1:11:07they're happy like truly happy without
- 1:11:08you
- 1:11:10>> because if they've not figured out one
- 1:11:12thing where they can be themselves and
- 1:11:15they're happy it'll be very difficult.
- 1:11:17Yeah, it is very difficult in general
- 1:11:19like if you don't have something which
- 1:11:21>> because it makes you angry as a person
- 1:11:24frustrates you.
- 1:11:25>> Yeah. And then it's all on people around
- 1:11:27you and everything around that. So I
- 1:11:30feel that's like for me that's a very
- 1:11:32like that's something I tell everyone
- 1:11:34again say that
- 1:11:36>> you can only give happiness if you're
- 1:11:38happy
- 1:11:40>> like happy soul. I mean like you know
- 1:11:42you can't
- 1:11:43>> but do you let do you feel happiness for
- 1:11:45more than 30 minutes
- 1:11:48>> I am happy I don't feel excitement more
- 1:11:50two different things yeah
- 1:11:52>> okay you don't get excited at all
- 1:11:53>> no I do like see the first time I got
- 1:11:56the ICC award I remember calling my
- 1:11:58parents my brother in a conference call
- 1:12:00and being like all prepped up about
- 1:12:02mommy papa can't believe
- 1:12:05and I have done all that for 15 20
- 1:12:07minutes but my family is also like very
- 1:12:10blah
- 1:12:17Mom, dad of course they are very excited
- 1:12:19people like
- 1:12:21but yeah that's about it after 20 30
- 1:12:23minutes I'm like okay fine up
- 1:12:27>> like yeah so
- 1:12:29>> do you play to win or do you play to not
- 1:12:31lose
- 1:12:33>> oh
- 1:12:34interesting I never thought about it
- 1:12:37>> think
- 1:12:39>> pretty much same Oh,
- 1:12:41>> very different way of playing.
- 1:12:46>> I think
- 1:12:46>> Do you hate losing or do you love
- 1:12:48winning? What what's a stronger emotion?
- 1:12:51>> I think I love
- 1:12:53playing.
- 1:12:55>> Yeah, fair. Which is why you play
- 1:12:58>> losing a parcel part and parcel of the
- 1:13:00game is what I would
- 1:13:01>> take out cricket.
- 1:13:02>> Let's say other sports. You're very
- 1:13:04competitive and aggressive. I know that
- 1:13:06>> winning. I think
- 1:13:07>> you hate losing or you
- 1:13:09>> I love winning. I don't think I hate
- 1:13:11anything in life.
- 1:13:11>> Are you a bad loser?
- 1:13:14>> Could be in other sports. Yes. Not in
- 1:13:16cricket. Cricket like of course it's a
- 1:13:18bread and butter.
- 1:13:19>> Yeah. So
- 1:13:20>> it's not cricket. Like we're just
- 1:13:22talking about you as a person.
- 1:13:22>> With my friends and family. Yes. Not
- 1:13:24with random people. I would
- 1:13:26>> You're a bad You're sore losers.
- 1:13:28>> Yeah. With my brother. I could
- 1:13:29>> What do you do when you lose?
- 1:13:30>> I throw a fit. I would be like, "What is
- 1:13:33this? cheating
- 1:13:38whatever I speak around cricket I'm not
- 1:13:40that person then why what changes you
- 1:13:44just like that inbuilt which is there
- 1:13:51and then and that's how I am with
- 1:13:53batting also I am very egoistic as a
- 1:13:56batter
- 1:13:57>> explain
- 1:13:58>> like if I get beaten in nets
- 1:14:01I like I can't take
- 1:14:04In my head I'm like can't leave getting
- 1:14:06out even if I get beaten or something
- 1:14:08I'm just like no that's not you know
- 1:14:11next session I'll come in full like
- 1:14:13that's what I'm saying maybe my
- 1:14:15personality is not such but my mind is
- 1:14:16that way that next my next next practice
- 1:14:18session I'm like
- 1:14:25and not that I show it in my aggression
- 1:14:28but in my head it's small battles which
- 1:14:29I have to have and yeah I have I hate
- 1:14:33Like if I get LBW and bold there's two
- 1:14:36dismissals
- 1:14:38I can't sleep. Sleep means that like
- 1:14:43this both I can't get
- 1:14:53arrogance arrogance it's like a
- 1:14:57selfresect ego
- 1:15:00but that's something which I like I
- 1:15:02always pride
- 1:15:09like
- 1:15:11thank you then I'm like I can't
- 1:15:18I will be like I knew I know that I'm
- 1:15:29in my own mind that I have it. So it's
- 1:15:32very funny like sometimes I get out and
- 1:15:33the coach would be like
- 1:15:38that day I'll still be like I'll come
- 1:15:39back I'll be still the day I get bold
- 1:15:41and like
- 1:15:49you are chill about it. So that's that's
- 1:15:51like LBW and are something which I'm not
- 1:15:53too fond of.
- 1:15:54>> Do you think that ego makes you better
- 1:15:56as a player? this ego,
- 1:15:59>> it can crash you or get you better.
- 1:16:01>> For you,
- 1:16:02>> for me, I think it drives me because I'm
- 1:16:04such a chilled out personality that if I
- 1:16:07didn't have this personality in me, it
- 1:16:10would not like give that fire in me.
- 1:16:13>> M
- 1:16:14>> because I am like a rich types person a
- 1:16:17lot. So if in my batting also I would be
- 1:16:20that that would have not like now I
- 1:16:22constantly keep thinking how to get
- 1:16:24better, how to get better. is because of
- 1:16:25that ego in my mind. So, so yeah, I
- 1:16:29think it kind of motivates me to get up
- 1:16:32like
- 1:16:35so I think it's good also for me like
- 1:16:38personality like me it's very good.
- 1:16:40>> Where do you get your fire from? Like
- 1:16:41what drives you?
- 1:16:46Like is it other people bother you that
- 1:16:49who has told you that you can't play and
- 1:16:50you're wrong
- 1:16:52>> to prove them wrong or is like your
- 1:16:54expectation that
- 1:16:58was itself or is it others
- 1:17:01or is it someone else
- 1:17:09like I've done so much of hard work with
- 1:17:12betting I can't get out like this you
- 1:17:14know that kind of a ego comes M
- 1:17:16>> let me know I'm better than this sort of
- 1:17:19a thing. Yeah, that drives me.
- 1:17:22>> It's within like you see yourself in
- 1:17:25your head as the player. So you better
- 1:17:28want to
- 1:17:28>> but if you play that way yeah you have
- 1:17:30to see yourself as the player.
- 1:17:37You have to think that you are the
- 1:17:39player.
- 1:17:40>> Even if you're not, you have to think
- 1:17:42you are the player. Otherwise, how is
- 1:17:44people going to believe that you're the
- 1:17:46player? You have to think now that I do
- 1:17:48feel like though my attitude, my walk
- 1:17:52and all that is not there. But in my
- 1:17:53head, I'm I know like don't take like
- 1:17:57panga like you know in my head I would
- 1:17:59be in that zone.
- 1:18:01>> That's that's true. You know my one of
- 1:18:03my mindset coaches made me do this
- 1:18:06exercise very early on. So whenever I
- 1:18:08would do a podcast with this is like two
- 1:18:11years ago. Yeah.
- 1:18:13uh two years ago. So whenever I would do
- 1:18:16podcast with someone that really big
- 1:18:18right and I wish then I would become
- 1:18:20very small like do you do you get what I
- 1:18:23mean? So let's say
- 1:18:25>> if I'm doing a podcast with Bill Gates,
- 1:18:27right? So in I wouldn't be this chill
- 1:18:30like he's here to be this chill but I
- 1:18:32would just be like succumb and become
- 1:18:34that
- 1:18:35>> and I would not be my natural self and I
- 1:18:37would not think that I'm the player and
- 1:18:39this is the game that I'm playing and I
- 1:18:41would just succumb to that pressure
- 1:18:43>> and questions which I know because for
- 1:18:47someone like him I've been preparing for
- 1:18:4920 years
- 1:18:51>> in your head for world cup you're
- 1:18:53preparing since the time you have picked
- 1:18:55up a bat right so that's the so that for
- 1:18:57me is that kind of day. So and I I used
- 1:19:00to bad
- 1:19:01>> you could see that there are one podcast
- 1:19:03before you will see like
- 1:19:07>> and then my mindset coach like he told
- 1:19:11me that what do you feel? I'm like I
- 1:19:13just feel like I'm not I'm not the
- 1:19:15player like I'm not that guy. He's like
- 1:19:18who's that guy like do you have that
- 1:19:20comparison? So and then I started
- 1:19:23mentioning names of other people like
- 1:19:25Oprah Winfrey is like other 20 names.
- 1:19:30>> And so then he made me write like 10
- 1:19:32things what do you do I like from other
- 1:19:34people and and then he made me like now
- 1:19:37imagine like these 10 qualities together
- 1:19:39you have.
- 1:19:39>> Oh
- 1:19:40>> and then you are so do you think that
- 1:19:42this guy is the player right? Who
- 1:19:44whoever will have these 10 qualities is
- 1:19:45that player.
- 1:19:46>> Now imagine yourself that you are that
- 1:19:48player. Forget there's whoever just see
- 1:19:52yourself and he made me w before every
- 1:19:55podcast he was like 10 minutes before
- 1:19:59watch yourself
- 1:20:00>> be that very relaxed be that friend be
- 1:20:03that fun guy be that sensitive guy
- 1:20:05whatever you think that whoever is that
- 1:20:07>> and I started doing that in five or 10
- 1:20:09podcast after that
- 1:20:11>> just change like now I don't there are
- 1:20:14times where you get little jitters
- 1:20:16>> but I don't change
- 1:20:17>> okay
- 1:20:17>> like you won't see that
- 1:20:22>> so to see yourself as the player is so
- 1:20:25important. Right. Yeah, it is
- 1:20:27>> that even if you're just talking, it
- 1:20:28feels like you become a different person
- 1:20:31if you start in your head feeling like
- 1:20:33you're
- 1:20:34best.
- 1:20:37>> Yeah. Your best version like it it
- 1:20:39doesn't have to be that.
- 1:20:43>> Yeah. I feel is a social media problem a
- 1:20:46lot now. Social media problem like
- 1:20:49because of social media everyone's
- 1:20:50available. It's human problem.
- 1:21:04comparison.
- 1:21:08Now all of a sudden there's like, oh,
- 1:21:10he's doing that fitness routine, she's
- 1:21:12doing that, he's doing that, that diet,
- 1:21:13she's doing that.
- 1:21:16Then it's just such a battle.
- 1:21:20What do you want and what your body is
- 1:21:22very different? Yeah.
- 1:21:24>> Like it's not necessarily what I do.
- 1:21:28Maybe some same person in the team will
- 1:21:30not be able to do and what she does I
- 1:21:32can't do it.
- 1:21:33>> True.
- 1:21:34>> Though we both play the same sport do
- 1:21:36the exact thing but it's a very
- 1:21:37different thing. So I as you said I mean
- 1:21:40what you your best is should be your
- 1:21:42best only.
- 1:21:43>> Yeah.
- 1:21:43>> And what is your routine should be your
- 1:21:45routines only.
- 1:21:46>> Fair.
- 1:21:46>> It can't be.
- 1:21:47>> Have you compared yourself to anyone
- 1:21:49ever in your head?
- 1:21:52So I didn't compare but I looked up to
- 1:21:55melaning quite a lot growing up. She's
- 1:21:58she was Australian captain and when I
- 1:22:00came into the scene she was like I mean
- 1:22:04she was like consistent at some some
- 1:22:06next level and I saw her
- 1:22:08>> flicking bowlers for sixes and at that
- 1:22:10time women's cricket not many would hit
- 1:22:13sixes. It's changed a lot now but time
- 1:22:15it was like a new thing and I saw that
- 1:22:16and I was like wow man like I want to
- 1:22:19bat like that someday. So not like a
- 1:22:22comparison but it was like a goal that
- 1:22:24you know you want to do something. So
- 1:22:26you want that one quality of her.
- 1:22:30>> Huh. I mean
- 1:22:31>> like not become a player like her but
- 1:22:34pick up that maybe that consistent
- 1:22:36flicking ability of her. Was it was it
- 1:22:39like that?
- 1:22:39>> Mostly her like she she would like walk
- 1:22:41the talk kind of a person. Yeah. You
- 1:22:43know like that's a pretty cool thing. I
- 1:22:45played with her again. we had we were
- 1:22:46playing for Manchester Super Jans and I
- 1:22:49was like wow
- 1:22:51we opened together and I was like okay
- 1:22:53nice I didn't show it to her that okay
- 1:22:55you know I've been I I played it pretty
- 1:22:57cool but uh but but yeah I was very
- 1:23:00happy and excited about it I was like
- 1:23:02wow I grown up watching her and now I'm
- 1:23:05batting with her
- 1:23:06>> so now see you felt excitement a little
- 1:23:08bit
- 1:23:10>> you don't feel a lot of excitement
- 1:23:11>> 10 minutes I said 10
- 1:23:16I was like
- 1:23:18once you once I entered the field and we
- 1:23:20start playing
- 1:23:24let me name like four top emotions of
- 1:23:27human beings and you tell me what do you
- 1:23:28feel about them like what's your
- 1:23:30definition of let's say anger like what
- 1:23:33do you think about anger
- 1:23:40>> what do you do when you're angry
- 1:23:42>> be quiet.
- 1:23:43>> Uh Jimmy somewhere said, "No, you give
- 1:23:45silent treatment."
- 1:23:46>> Ah, yeah. Be quiet. I'm very quiet.
- 1:23:48>> Which is worse.
- 1:23:50>> I don't know how it is for people.
- 1:23:53>> Yeah. But be quiet. I mean, I feel like
- 1:23:56because I feel it's a Cancerian trait
- 1:23:59that if you get angry, you could talk
- 1:24:01something which would hurt the other
- 1:24:03person a lot.
- 1:24:05So rather than hurting that person, just
- 1:24:08be quiet.
- 1:24:09>> Have there been in instances where
- 1:24:11>> Yeah. Yeah. every third
- 1:24:14fourth day something or the other
- 1:24:15happens and I feel like hitting a person
- 1:24:17and I'm just like
- 1:24:18>> I take half an hour I'll just be quiet
- 1:24:20about it and just I like after half an
- 1:24:22hour see most of the emotions after half
- 1:24:24an hour you're neutral about it
- 1:24:26>> that half an hour is the hardest to like
- 1:24:29manage
- 1:24:30but yeah I do get angry but
- 1:24:33>> not like somewhere where I lose what I'm
- 1:24:35saying I always want to be in control of
- 1:24:38what I'm saying
- 1:24:38>> but have you blasted where you're like
- 1:24:40you've just And you ended up hurting
- 1:24:42other person. So you realize that I
- 1:24:44should
- 1:24:44>> I could do that. I could do that.
- 1:24:46>> You must have.
- 1:24:46>> I have. I have done in my life.
- 1:24:48>> That's why you know it. You're aware of
- 1:24:49it. That's I know I could and I have
- 1:24:52done that in life and I don't think I
- 1:24:53should like there are times where of
- 1:24:56course you you do that. You're not like
- 1:24:57any you're human still.
- 1:25:00>> Yeah. But and then I realize that the
- 1:25:02friend who I've done that to just like
- 1:25:04gone and then I just feel like and the
- 1:25:07next moment you start feeling guilty
- 1:25:08that oh you made them go through that
- 1:25:11what you said.
- 1:25:13>> So that's when that makes me feel guilty
- 1:25:15that you know I put them in that sort of
- 1:25:17a space.
- 1:25:18>> So then I like then I kind of got it
- 1:25:21covered. Mhm.
- 1:25:22>> But yeah, anger is something no one
- 1:25:25resonates with me, but I have a lot of
- 1:25:27anger. But I just I'm very controlled
- 1:25:31person.
- 1:25:32>> Do you channelize that for a better
- 1:25:34thing?
- 1:25:37>> Only with batting only.
- 1:25:38>> But no, but do you feel
- 1:25:42like anger makes me worse person? Like
- 1:25:44it it makes me worse. So I go I'm silent
- 1:25:48and then I sleep because I know I can
- 1:25:50end up hurting someone right but there
- 1:25:52is a friend of mine who gets extremely
- 1:25:54angry and then starts writing what are
- 1:25:57the things which triggered him
- 1:25:59>> that what was the trigger
- 1:26:02and he's become much better person
- 1:26:04because he's like the things which used
- 1:26:05to make me angry or offend me doesn't
- 1:26:08anymore
- 1:26:10>> because some pattern maybe picked up
- 1:26:12from somebody
- 1:26:13>> so like normally randomly I wouldn't get
- 1:26:15angry on normal people but like your
- 1:26:17friends and your close people you get
- 1:26:19angry in a certain way
- 1:26:22>> at at moments I've realized it's better
- 1:26:24to be quiet and not do right wait
- 1:26:25nothing just just
- 1:26:27>> take a ch
- 1:26:31my worst moments or anger anger side of
- 1:26:34my channelizing is watching Mahabharat
- 1:26:37like I mean I'm a big mahar fan like for
- 1:26:40me
- 1:26:41>> what Krishna g says is like rules of
- 1:26:44life types I'm that sort of a person
- 1:26:46like my spirituality is like going by
- 1:26:49his preachings like that is my way of
- 1:26:52spirituality. So
- 1:26:54>> so yeah I watch some episode of
- 1:26:56Mahabharat and then sleep.
- 1:26:58>> What triggers you to get angry like what
- 1:27:00makes you angry?
- 1:27:01>> Anything?
- 1:27:03>> Tell me what's
- 1:27:04>> when you're driving and someone just
- 1:27:06crosses you for no reason.
- 1:27:07>> So you're short tempered like that.
- 1:27:09>> Yeah, I can be but again I don't
- 1:27:11necessarily say anything but
- 1:27:13>> but in your head.
- 1:27:14>> In your head. Yeah. Like
- 1:27:20I'm like that way. So So you you get
- 1:27:24angry but again
- 1:27:29all of a sudden you're like
- 1:27:31you got angry.
- 1:27:32>> Yeah. I got angry in my head like I told
- 1:27:37>> outside your zen like inside you're like
- 1:27:39full chaos going on.
- 1:27:41>> Huh? There can be anger. Yeah. I that's
- 1:27:43what I'm said. uh no one resonates with
- 1:27:45me but I'm a very like I could get very
- 1:27:47angry and I'm like don't take panga with
- 1:27:50me type person
- 1:27:51>> like till I don't come in your way don't
- 1:27:53come in my way.
- 1:27:54>> Do you take revenge?
- 1:27:55>> Huh? I won't take revenge but
- 1:28:00like I'll not forget it also but I won't
- 1:28:03do like bad things to that person nor I
- 1:28:06will not that way but I I'm pretty much
- 1:28:09like in my head I'm like you don't like
- 1:28:12till you're not coming in my I won't
- 1:28:14bother you but don't just come randomly
- 1:28:17follow me on in my way then I'm little
- 1:28:20kissa
- 1:28:20>> do you easily forgive people
- 1:28:24>> I forgive But I don't forget that's the
- 1:28:27problem. A but so XYZ let's say if
- 1:28:30somebody made you angry and hurt you
- 1:28:34that person won't matter to you after a
- 1:28:37while
- 1:28:40emotional trigger person if somebody
- 1:28:42comes in you like
- 1:28:47so emotional triggers are not there it's
- 1:28:48just like
- 1:28:52but
- 1:28:54like I won't spoil anyone's life.
- 1:28:58>> What do you feel about sad as an
- 1:29:00emotion? Grief, sadness.
- 1:29:06>> Go quiet.
- 1:29:08>> Tell me. Yeah.
- 1:29:09>> Like if you're sad, I think you just for
- 1:29:11me I feel I just go quiet. Yeah. For a
- 1:29:14very long time, I could be quiet and
- 1:29:16just within myself. Quiet is not like
- 1:29:18mon but quiet.
- 1:29:23Yeah. M
- 1:29:24>> and
- 1:29:25>> and for you know what I don't like
- 1:29:28biggest thing is that other person
- 1:29:29understanding that I'm sad is one big
- 1:29:31thing I hate sympathy
- 1:29:34>> any sort of sympathy oh like you're sad
- 1:29:38oh what happened you know that sympathy
- 1:29:41means again how do I explain like you
- 1:29:43know people will come and like
- 1:29:47if you're sad about it people will feel
- 1:29:48that you're sad about it and something
- 1:29:50big has happened and then they'll come
- 1:29:51and give sympathy so my life rule is
- 1:29:54that I don't want to be that person so
- 1:29:56that I don't get sympathy because I hate
- 1:29:58it. I'm like no I can manage like
- 1:30:05I'm fine like you know even if I've got
- 1:30:07doubt I've had a bad whatever world cup
- 1:30:10or I've had whatever time don't look at
- 1:30:12me as I don't like to portray myself
- 1:30:15like that I'm strong like not for the
- 1:30:18world also I'm just I I mean I'm strong
- 1:30:21I don't want that like
- 1:30:29Some people are naturally like but
- 1:30:32sometimes you know you maybe it's okay
- 1:30:35for them to for people to ask them are
- 1:30:37you okay I don't like it
- 1:30:39>> I don't like this questions are you okay
- 1:30:42>> why don't you like it
- 1:30:45>> yeah but I somehow I've never liked it
- 1:30:48as a person also I I don't know I just
- 1:30:50feel like I've lived my life a certain
- 1:30:52way And I don't think I'm answerable or
- 1:30:55all this sympathy kind of a thing like
- 1:30:58you know you just you just know like I
- 1:31:01don't know it's a very weird thing but I
- 1:31:03I can't take it that's why I never like
- 1:31:06that's why I never speak in interviews
- 1:31:07also around family issues or family
- 1:31:11issues like the rent
- 1:31:16>> I mean I'm not that I'm just like look
- 1:31:18at me like a happy soul look at me like
- 1:31:20that like get inspired by the game not
- 1:31:23by the story like know that sort of a
- 1:31:25person I am
- 1:31:26>> fair but there's why don't you like when
- 1:31:30people look at the sad part
- 1:31:34>> because there's so much nice
- 1:31:36>> which is people are celebrating you for
- 1:31:39the nice things but if somebody wants to
- 1:31:41know about the sad part
- 1:31:47see that I feel is um for me and my
- 1:31:51family to take and for my near ones to
- 1:31:53take like
- 1:31:56like tomorrow we become best friends and
- 1:31:58we going out on coffee and I I still
- 1:32:00hide everything and not tell you
- 1:32:02everything. I I'll be an open book.
- 1:32:03Well,
- 1:32:04>> the world you don't want.
- 1:32:05>> But h I mean what's the point, right?
- 1:32:08>> I don't want any extra likes or these
- 1:32:13things because of that like I would
- 1:32:17rather have people liking my work, my
- 1:32:20game, my cricket
- 1:32:21>> which is true
- 1:32:22>> and that is what I have chose for people
- 1:32:24to know. That's the life I have chose to
- 1:32:28like I can't hide my cricketing part of
- 1:32:31it. So if you have asked me anything
- 1:32:32around cricket cricketing mindset how I
- 1:32:34feel that's not something which I would
- 1:32:36hide also because that's part of my life
- 1:32:38which I have chose that people has to
- 1:32:41know because I've chose to play cricket
- 1:32:43for India so it has to happen but the
- 1:32:46other part of it I don't think that
- 1:32:49that's something I have chose to share.
- 1:32:52>> Fair.
- 1:32:52>> Yeah. Like you know that's why I never
- 1:32:55said any story around my growing up or
- 1:32:58anything.
- 1:32:59>> Crazy. Do you enjoy fame
- 1:33:03>> on ground? Yes.
- 1:33:07Like
- 1:33:09like on the field when I go and there
- 1:33:10are there's like full full sold out
- 1:33:13stadium and they are chanting my name or
- 1:33:15chanting India and we're playing
- 1:33:17that's a very nice feeling. It's like I
- 1:33:20look around and I'm like wow women's
- 1:33:22cricket has reached here and it's it's a
- 1:33:24nice feeling like to be fair I like I
- 1:33:25love it
- 1:33:26>> and that's where I enjoy it the most
- 1:33:28when I'm batting I'm taking stance and
- 1:33:30people are chanting my name that's it I
- 1:33:32feel like oh wow this is cool
- 1:33:35once I'm off that boundary rope I'm
- 1:33:37extremely shy like I'll be shy in an
- 1:33:40elevator I'll be shy in a cafe if I'm
- 1:33:43sitting in a cafe and someone if I hear
- 1:33:45from someone
- 1:33:47I'm like
- 1:33:50You know, like I'm very shy. So
- 1:33:54>> when people come to you, do you get
- 1:33:55awkward?
- 1:33:55>> I very very awkward. I don't know how to
- 1:33:58have a conversation. I still don't know.
- 1:34:00>> You're like, "Yeah, ma'am, please like
- 1:34:01picture." And then you're like, "Oh,
- 1:34:03bye."
- 1:34:06You know, I'm like, "Hello." Or like if
- 1:34:07at all I'm eating or something, I'll be
- 1:34:09like, "No, I'll give once I'm done
- 1:34:11eating. I can't eat and give you food."
- 1:34:14Do you like leave your food and just
- 1:34:16stand and then click and or you finish?
- 1:34:18>> I'm not that nice.
- 1:34:19>> You're not that nice.
- 1:34:22>> I mean to say like Yeah. I just feel
- 1:34:25like someone's eating food. They're also
- 1:34:26humans. Let them eat and we can I'm not
- 1:34:29like rude.
- 1:34:30>> I just like request key I'm eating and
- 1:34:32we'll finish and
- 1:34:35>> but yeah, I'm very shy. So once I'm off
- 1:34:37that rope, it's like two personalities
- 1:34:39there. I would like Yes. Nice. This is
- 1:34:42cool. Once I'm off it and signing
- 1:34:44autographs and all also in stadium
- 1:34:46itself, it's like
- 1:34:49I mean I'm not like I'll be shy around
- 1:34:52it. So yeah, there's two I don't know if
- 1:34:55I enjoy fame or not. So it's like 50/50
- 1:34:59kind of a thing.
- 1:35:00>> There's there's a there's an athlete
- 1:35:02self and there's
- 1:35:03>> yeah athletes Miti Mahan the cricketer.
- 1:35:05I think she loves it. The person I don't
- 1:35:07think she
- 1:35:08>> she's too keen on it. uh much more
- 1:35:11private than than frustration.
- 1:35:19I only know emotions which are there in
- 1:35:20that movie that animated movie.
- 1:35:25>> Jimmy made me watch it
- 1:35:26>> inside. Inside Jimmy made me sit and
- 1:35:30watch it because I'm not an animation
- 1:35:31person. Sit and watch it.
- 1:35:32>> Was it good? Did you like it?
- 1:35:34>> It's cute. It's nice.
- 1:35:35>> So many people talk about I've never
- 1:35:36seen it.
- 1:35:37>> Oh, I mean so many emotions, you know.
- 1:35:38You should watch it.
- 1:35:41It's nice.
- 1:35:45>> No, but it's cute. It's emotions
- 1:35:47explained in a very cute way.
- 1:35:49>> Okay.
- 1:35:50>> So, have you felt frustrated like
- 1:35:52frustration, helplessness?
- 1:35:58>> Not really. Not like for a very long
- 1:36:01period of time.
- 1:36:01>> Not even at the time when you were going
- 1:36:03through an injury and you couldn't you
- 1:36:05didn't know will the next when will the
- 1:36:07next day come? 30 40 minutes again like
- 1:36:11maybe 30 minute rule maybe a day or
- 1:36:12something when you're injured you've got
- 1:36:14an ACL and I was like okay yeah I
- 1:36:16remember
- 1:36:18>> so we the contracts were introduced for
- 1:36:20the first time for women in 2016
- 1:36:23>> and um that's when I got the first house
- 1:36:26which was like 3 BHK sangi and I bought
- 1:36:30that house and in a month's time I got
- 1:36:33injured I was like oh god
- 1:36:37like I don't what to do. I had ACL at
- 1:36:40that time and I was like how would I pay
- 1:36:42this thing back and all of that stuff
- 1:36:45and um then I felt for that that
- 1:36:49restlessness of that 2 three days and I
- 1:36:52was like he kept going the world cup is
- 1:36:54in 5 months let's just focus to get fit
- 1:36:57let's see what happens after that at
- 1:36:58least
- 1:37:08Like once you've stared there, you don't
- 1:37:10worry to come back there. Like when you
- 1:37:12worry when you're always there and then
- 1:37:14you're just like, "Oh, you don't know
- 1:37:15that life." So I was like
- 1:37:18all this happened at 2017 World Cup
- 1:37:20happened
- 1:37:22>> and I somehow I got fit and I managed
- 1:37:24God kind of helped me in all my ways.
- 1:37:27Got fit. We played that World Cup. It
- 1:37:31went well. Women's cricket was
- 1:37:33introduced in India. All of a sudden
- 1:37:34like women's cricket was a household
- 1:37:36name and all of those things happened. I
- 1:37:38come back
- 1:37:40and we got prize monies and all of that
- 1:37:43and I ended up buying the other flat
- 1:37:45like how God like changed the whole kind
- 1:37:49of a thing. It's like 6 months back I
- 1:37:50was like
- 1:37:54flat. But after 6 months, I ended up
- 1:37:56buying one flat adjacent to that one.
- 1:37:58Just I said that's a God's way of doing
- 1:38:02things.
- 1:38:03>> Nice. What was the hardest
- 1:38:07moment or hardest night for you
- 1:38:11in your life?
- 1:38:12>> Um,
- 1:38:14hardest night.
- 1:38:23I'm thinking
- 1:38:26probably
- 1:38:29like some world cups only like we've
- 1:38:31lost and I've not slept.
- 1:38:35I'll I'll only speak about cricket
- 1:38:37anyways. Yeah, I mean yeah it has to I
- 1:38:42think even co I think is pretty
- 1:38:43difficult time.
- 1:38:44>> What happened? Nothing happened in such
- 1:38:47it's just that whole stuff was happening
- 1:38:50when we not as cricket is not in one
- 1:38:53room for a very long time like you know
- 1:38:56it's very vulnerable place you've always
- 1:38:58been on road we've had something to now
- 1:39:00all of a sudden everything's at halt
- 1:39:02first one month you enjoyed family
- 1:39:04everything and then
- 1:39:05>> all of a sudden there's so many uh
- 1:39:08everyone's dying around you something is
- 1:39:10happening so many vulnerabilities and
- 1:39:12then that fear of losing out on your own
- 1:39:14people. I think that was that whole two
- 1:39:16three months were pretty like difficult
- 1:39:18times. You just kept
- 1:39:21like
- 1:39:25you know it was just a very especially
- 1:39:27the second wave. Yeah. my uh Bhav's um
- 1:39:31like mom she lost we lost her in Indor
- 1:39:35and uh
- 1:39:37so it was a pretty like hard time for
- 1:39:40and she was I mean she's pregnant with
- 1:39:41Rein so it was like yeah we lost and
- 1:39:45that whole thing happened when I was
- 1:39:47also there and then it just felt like
- 1:39:49after that for six seven days it was
- 1:39:52like a little yeah so that I feel those
- 1:39:55times were a little vulnerable huh like
- 1:39:57in general Not even that that moment but
- 1:40:00even every time you got a call from a
- 1:40:03friend that someone's friend is in
- 1:40:05hospital like something is happening and
- 1:40:07the bed is not there what to do and it's
- 1:40:09like a very like you didn't know what to
- 1:40:11do so I think that was pretty
- 1:40:14>> I would say a difficult time for all of
- 1:40:16us for me I mean I I didn't know what to
- 1:40:19like do and
- 1:40:20>> for me co was everyone talks about it
- 1:40:24and personally it was not as hard even
- 1:40:28and I saw my dad got co and then we had
- 1:40:31to like you know he had to go to the
- 1:40:33hospital and then he's a diabetic
- 1:40:35patient
- 1:40:37>> so for you know that whole hype
- 1:40:40injection something which was there
- 1:40:45>> lung collapse and all of that was going
- 1:40:47on
- 1:40:48>> and everyone was making it a thing that
- 1:40:51this is scary what's I was optimistic
- 1:40:57So maybe somehow because my dad got it
- 1:41:01and I was optimistic obviously this is
- 1:41:03just
- 1:41:04>> he'll come back he'll come back and I
- 1:41:06saw him coming back and then he got fine
- 1:41:08so I became optimistic throughout
- 1:41:11>> maybe
- 1:41:12>> and we didn't see anyone touchwood
- 1:41:14>> like nearby at least with in my
- 1:41:17immediate family we didn't see anyone
- 1:41:20>> a lot of people got co and they got
- 1:41:21saved
- 1:41:22>> okay
- 1:41:22>> so for me it was Mhm.
- 1:41:24>> And not as hard
- 1:41:26>> as other people.
- 1:41:27>> No. Yeah. But in general, the whole time
- 1:41:30was very hard.
- 1:41:31>> Yeah. It was like you put out, you see
- 1:41:34social media, everything's like
- 1:41:36something's happened to someone. So it's
- 1:41:39just like those five six months only
- 1:41:41just felt very I would say I would maybe
- 1:41:44those nights I would not sleep the best.
- 1:41:47>> Yeah. because you're with and is it
- 1:41:53like who gets to know the first whenever
- 1:41:57something's hard with you?
- 1:42:00>> Maybe my brother.
- 1:42:02>> You share everything with him?
- 1:42:04>> Yeah, I share most of the things with
- 1:42:05him. So,
- 1:42:06>> how old is he?
- 1:42:07>> He's 4 years older to me.
- 1:42:09>> So, not that like it's almost very
- 1:42:11close.
- 1:42:12>> Same like we me and my brother. My
- 1:42:13brother's a younger brother.
- 1:42:14>> Okay. But four years
- 1:42:16>> same like my he's four years elder to
- 1:42:18me. So he's I think I speak to him only
- 1:42:22like what is like happening like after a
- 1:42:24few days of thinking by myself and
- 1:42:26trying to figure out my solution and
- 1:42:28then I'm like okay fine mostly him.
- 1:42:30Yeah.
- 1:42:31>> Okay. I have uh okay so I usually ask
- 1:42:33this question to everyone is what is one
- 1:42:36advice nobody should follow?
- 1:42:41I don't think only you should follow any
- 1:42:47I think you should only follow what life
- 1:42:49teaches you
- 1:42:51like.
- 1:42:52>> What do you mean? But there's So you
- 1:42:53feel like people should not follow any
- 1:42:55advice? No,
- 1:42:56>> no, they can't follow advices. But
- 1:42:58>> what is one advice that you hate? Like
- 1:42:59you're like it's a advice.
- 1:43:02>> Why you thinking so much?
- 1:43:11How can I not be? I can't be chill about
- 1:43:14my batting, right? I can't be chill
- 1:43:15about cricket.
- 1:43:16>> Nice.
- 1:43:16>> I mean, it's like
- 1:43:21that's something which I feel is stupid.
- 1:43:23>> Nice. Very nice.
- 1:43:25>> Well, that's the only thing which I feel
- 1:43:26is stupid. Otherwise, I feel like of
- 1:43:28course I also listen to I love podcasts.
- 1:43:31I listen to a lot of podcasts. like
- 1:43:34video necessarily I wouldn't watch but
- 1:43:36>> the podcast would be on
- 1:43:38>> and I do take a lot of advices. I loved
- 1:43:40Michael Phelps stuff with you and what
- 1:43:43he spoke about how he's working with
- 1:43:45suicidal
- 1:43:46>> I think people and how he's helping them
- 1:43:49all of those things. So I do believe in
- 1:43:52taking advices but you should not take
- 1:43:54advice because they're successful.
- 1:43:56>> You should take advice because they're
- 1:43:57relatable to you.
- 1:43:59>> Interesting. Like there might be four
- 1:44:02cricketers
- 1:44:04who talk and they're great. They've been
- 1:44:06successful. I should also know who I'm
- 1:44:08relating more with, right? It should be
- 1:44:11relatable. I can't be a different
- 1:44:13person.
- 1:44:14And if I'm trying to be different person
- 1:44:17just because that person is like that is
- 1:44:19wrong. I want to be that person. I
- 1:44:20understand. So yeah, that's one thing
- 1:44:22which I think everyone should stop like
- 1:44:24they should not if they're relating to
- 1:44:26me then listen to me otherwise just
- 1:44:28don't
- 1:44:29>> interesting. I like that first line that
- 1:44:32you said.
- 1:44:34That is such a fresh advice to have.
- 1:44:37Such a fresh take.
- 1:44:48Okay, you can think about it half an
- 1:44:50hour and you're overthinking that and
- 1:44:52people coming because you're not part of
- 1:44:54that.
- 1:44:55>> You might not like people can still tell
- 1:44:58that
- 1:45:02I am defined by what I do there.
- 1:45:04>> True.
- 1:45:04>> And you are telling me not to think
- 1:45:06about that and just enjoy.
- 1:45:09So that's
- 1:45:10>> true. Last question is what's
- 1:45:14so we have a wall it's called cost of
- 1:45:16ambition. M cost of ambition
- 1:45:18>> ambition. So like I love asking really
- 1:45:20successful people
- 1:45:22>> what cost have they paid for their
- 1:45:24ambition. The question for you is
- 1:45:27what cost what is the cost of becoming
- 1:45:32mand
- 1:45:36less of family time that's the only cost
- 1:45:40I think otherwise I'm pretty happy
- 1:45:43like I missed school I missed college
- 1:45:45and all of those things are there but
- 1:45:47I'm not I am happy but like lesser
- 1:45:51home time less of time with family and
- 1:45:53lesser time with your friends is
- 1:45:55something which is I think cost of where
- 1:45:58you are because we travel so much.
- 1:46:00>> Does it bother you less time with your
- 1:46:03family?
- 1:46:05>> Yeah, it it does bother me in a way
- 1:46:07where when you're there you just want to
- 1:46:09spend a few more days but ambition takes
- 1:46:12over. I mean like you just want to get
- 1:46:14back to work as well. So but luckily I
- 1:46:18mean my parents are like they travel a
- 1:46:20lot with me again. They come with me. My
- 1:46:21brother comes a lot. So I'm around in
- 1:46:24and around them quite a lot. So which is
- 1:46:25nice. If that was also not happening
- 1:46:27then I would have felt even worse. But
- 1:46:30uh but yeah sometimes that just one
- 1:46:33regular life without a suitcase
- 1:46:37get up to a same place have a set
- 1:46:38routine and have set of coffee and you
- 1:46:41know it's a very distant dream for us
- 1:46:43you know it's like
- 1:46:45>> it's because we we don't do that a lot
- 1:46:48and for me like
- 1:46:49>> I feel like that's poster tab for sure
- 1:46:52whenever but I think that's something
- 1:46:53like just no plain simple life nothing
- 1:46:56fancy around it just normal
- 1:46:59just wake up without an alarm. It's like
- 1:47:02you would privilege not to have like
- 1:47:04wake up without an alarm, do your stuff
- 1:47:08like cook your food and those small
- 1:47:10small little joys of life you I mean
- 1:47:12it's hard to get
- 1:47:14>> which is
- 1:47:14>> but I'm very happy having said that
- 1:47:17>> but I'm very happy where I am but yeah
