- 0:03we use energy lots of energy but there
- 0:07are going to be some big changes in the
- 0:09way we use energy the world is running
- 0:12out of oil and natural gas and we need
- 0:14to find alternative and eco-friendly
- 0:17energy sources Denmark has the political
- 0:20vision of becoming independent of fossil
- 0:22fuels and our Energy Systems will
- 0:24therefore be transformed in the decades
- 0:26to come some believe that the
- 0:29transformation is comparable to the
- 0:31effect the internet has had on our
- 0:33everyday lives in the years to come
- 0:36energy will be produced transported and
- 0:39used in a very different and far more
- 0:41efficient manner than the one for which
- 0:43the power system was originally
- 0:46[Music]
- 0:50designed until recently our electricity
- 0:53was produced by huge Central CHP plants
- 0:56close to cities and industrial areas and
- 0:59then transported on to the consumers
- 1:02this has already changed thousands of
- 1:05wind turbines have sprung up along with
- 1:07hundreds of local CHP plants numerous
- 1:10photovoltaic cell plants and other local
- 1:13units to put it simply today energy is
- 1:16produced everywhere and transported in
- 1:18all directions in the power system this
- 1:21trend will intensify over the coming
- 1:25years in future we will live in
- 1:28intelligent houses that control our
- 1:30energy consumption easily conveniently
- 1:33and intelligently without us really
- 1:35noticing air conditioning heat pumps
- 1:38freezers refrigerators washing machines
- 1:41and Tumble dryers will all be controlled
- 1:44intelligently the consumer could simply
- 1:47use an ordinary mobile phone or plug in
- 1:49an adapter to automatically start and
- 1:51stop the appliances depending on the
- 1:54price of electricity the price of
- 1:56electricity in turn depends on how windy
- 1:59it is
- 2:00over time appliances will feature the
- 2:02new technology when we buy
- 2:05them in future we will also use
- 2:07electricity for things that previously
- 2:09required a different power source the
- 2:12petrol car will be replaced with an
- 2:14electric vehicle and the oil fired
- 2:16boiler will be replaced with an electric
- 2:19heat pump electricity and heat
- 2:21consumption patterns will also change as
- 2:23we insulate our houses better or build
- 2:26Zero Energy houses some people will also
- 2:30start to produce their own renewable
- 2:31energy from photovoltaic cells on the
- 2:34roof or generate their energy from small
- 2:36micro CHP units in the basement from
- 2:39heat pumps or from District Heating in
- 2:42future we will not just be using
- 2:45electricity our homes may also be used
- 2:47to store renewable
- 2:50[Music]
- 2:55energy there is no shortage of wind in
- 2:58Denmark in fact there is so much of it
- 3:00that wind power could in theory cover
- 3:02Denmark's entire energy consumption wind
- 3:05power and biomass are the biggest
- 3:07renewable energy resources in Denmar
- 3:11because of the large amounts of
- 3:12renewable energy the power system will
- 3:14be the backbone of the energy system of
- 3:16the future over time renewable energy
- 3:19will gradually displace coal oil and
- 3:22natural gas in our energy consumption
- 3:24patterns heat pumps will for example
- 3:27replace oil fired boilers elect elect
- 3:30boilers will supply energy for district
- 3:31Heating and we will see a growing number
- 3:34of electric vehicles on the road power
- 3:36consumption will increase marketly and a
- 3:39more efficient utilization of energy
- 3:41will make our energy consumption fall if
- 3:45we are to integrate large amounts of
- 3:47renewable energy into the power system
- 3:49in an efficient socioeconomic way we
- 3:52must rethink and reconfigure our Energy
- 3:55System the intelligent power grid smart
- 3:58grid is the key to realizing this
- 4:01transformation the green and intelligent
- 4:04power system of the future is composed
- 4:06of several elements first we will use
- 4:09much more renewable energy particularly
- 4:12from biomass and wind power the large
- 4:14wind power share means that energy
- 4:16production will vary greatly depending
- 4:18on the wind conditions second a strong
- 4:22power grid will be required that is able
- 4:24to transport the large amounts of
- 4:26renewable energy to where the energy
- 4:28will be consumed in an International
- 4:30Energy Market third consumption will
- 4:34have to be made flexible so that we use
- 4:36green energy not just when we need it
- 4:38but also when the wind is blowing and
- 4:40the energy is cheap and
- 4:42plentiful fourth we must utilize the
- 4:45renewable energy in an environmentally
- 4:48and socioeconomically optimal manner by
- 4:51creating an integrated Energy System and
- 4:54controlling it in an intelligent power
- 4:56system a so-called smart grid
- 5:00[Music]
- 5:07in future our energy needs will
- 5:09increasingly be covered by wind
- 5:12turbines in just 10 years up to half of
- 5:15Danish power consumption may be covered
- 5:17by wind power produced increasingly by
- 5:20large offshore wind
- 5:22farms power stations will still be
- 5:25required to Supply Power when the wind
- 5:27is not blowing these stations must be
- 5:29able to quickly ramp their output up or
- 5:32down to ensure that power generation and
- 5:34consumption always
- 5:37balance in the long run the conventional
- 5:39Coal Fired power stations will be phased
- 5:42out and replaced by or converted into
- 5:45Power stations running on biomass biog
- 5:48gas or other renewable energy
- 5:51gases in very windy conditions when wind
- 5:54energy is abundant electric heat pumps
- 5:56in the district heating plants will in
- 5:58future be able to produce cheap heat
- 6:01which is stored in large storage
- 6:03facilities for later
- 6:05use it will also be possible as in this
- 6:08fullscale trial in Denmark to use
- 6:10Advanced Computers to jointly control
- 6:13small wind turbines CHP plants and other
- 6:16local generation units making them
- 6:19operate as a single integrated virtual
- 6:22power plant that can intelligently ramp
- 6:24production up or down depending on wind
- 6:26conditions and power consumption
- 6:34the second element of the green Energy
- 6:36System of the future is a strong power
- 6:38grid capable of transporting the large
- 6:41amounts of renewable energy from where
- 6:43it is produced to where it will be
- 6:45consumed in an efficient International
- 6:47electricity Market a strong power grid
- 6:50ensures that energy can be produced
- 6:52where it is cheapest and used where it
- 6:55is needed and where it has the highest
- 6:57value large submarines cables will
- 7:00connect new wind farms to the power grid
- 7:03the power grid will be expanded so it
- 7:05can handle a steep increase in power
- 7:07consumption when we rarely get going
- 7:09with electric vehicles and start to use
- 7:11heat pumps instead of oil fired
- 7:14boilers new strong International
- 7:16connections ensure that the large
- 7:18amounts of renewable energy are
- 7:20transported to consumers in a large
- 7:22geographical area strong power links
- 7:25help to ensure that the consumers always
- 7:27receive the cheapest electricity
- 7:30when wind energy is abundant we can
- 7:33export it and on quieter days we can
- 7:35import hydr power or in the longterm
- 7:38perhaps also solar energy from southern
- 7:40Europe in a large competitive
- 7:43international market supply and demand
- 7:45will guarantee transparent and fair
- 7:48Energy prices for the consumers at the
- 7:51same time electricity prices Will Be an
- 7:53Effective means of Shifting consumption
- 7:55to the times of day when there is a
- 7:57surplus of wind power and the power grid
- 8:00is not so heavily
- 8:03[Music]
- 8:06loaded the third element in the green
- 8:08and intelligent power system of the
- 8:10future is demand response in future
- 8:13energy will not only be produced when it
- 8:15is required with the many new onshore
- 8:18and offshore wind turbines energy should
- 8:21be used when it is plentiful and
- 8:24cheap unfortunately electricity is the
- 8:27most perishable commodity in the world
- 8:29it cannot be stored it must therefore be
- 8:32used in the same second it is produced
- 8:35there are no large cheap batteries that
- 8:38can store the electricity for later use
- 8:40but electricity can be converted into
- 8:42heat in District heating plants this is
- 8:45done by using heat pumps and electric
- 8:47boilers which function as big immersion
- 8:50heaters in enormous hot water tanks in
- 8:53this way the Surplus wind energy can be
- 8:55stored as hot water that can be used
- 8:57when needed to heat our houses
- 9:00in the same way a surplus of wind energy
- 9:02can be converted into heat in our homes
- 9:05this is done by intelligently
- 9:06controlling hundreds of individual heat
- 9:09pumps as if they were a single vast
- 9:11energy storage with the heat being
- 9:13stored in buildings and hot water tanks
- 9:17heat pumps work like a refrigerator in
- 9:19Reverse this means that they produce
- 9:21heat instead of cold they do this by
- 9:24taking advantage of the temperature
- 9:25difference in the ground for example
- 9:28when there is no wind and all power
- 9:30generation is needed elsewhere the heat
- 9:32pumps stop running and the houses start
- 9:35using the stored heat in the hot water
- 9:37tanks in this way heat pumps can help to
- 9:40turn power consumption up and down
- 9:43depending on the demand for power and
- 9:45the house owner will not be able to tell
- 9:47the
- 9:47difference we will therefore scrap our
- 9:50oil and natural gas fired boilers and
- 9:53our homes will primarily be heated by
- 9:55District Heating and electric heat pumps
- 10:00because of the increasing amounts of
- 10:01wind energy we will be able to displace
- 10:04fossil fuels in transport concurrently
- 10:06with petrol Vehicles being replaced with
- 10:08electric vehicles but if we all attempt
- 10:11to recharge our cars at the same time
- 10:13when we get home from work the power
- 10:15grid must be expanded and new power
- 10:18stations will be required to meet the
- 10:20increased demand for
- 10:22electricity this is where intelligent
- 10:24charging comes in intelligent charging
- 10:27means charging at times when when there
- 10:29is spare capacity in the power system
- 10:32and when the electricity produced by
- 10:33wind turbines is plentiful and therefore
- 10:36cheap and because the power system is
- 10:39intelligent electric vehicles will
- 10:41recharge at the best time for the system
- 10:44thus ensuring that the vehicles are
- 10:46always charged and ready for
- 10:49use eventually thousands of electric
- 10:52vehicles could act as a giant
- 10:53electricity storage facility the
- 10:56electricity could then be sold back to
- 10:58the power system when we do not need to
- 11:00drive anywhere after all the car is
- 11:03mostly just parked at home or at
- 11:06work and all this happens automatically
- 11:09and intelligently without us even
- 11:12noticing it will be possible to replace
- 11:15oil and natural gas fired boilers in
- 11:17private households with a micro CHP
- 11:20unit this is a personal power plant that
- 11:23can easily fit into the basement
- 11:25occupying only as much space as a normal
- 11:28refrigerator
- 11:29using fuel cells the micro unit converts
- 11:32either hydrogen or natural gas into
- 11:35electricity and heat in the house if it
- 11:38is windy and electricity therefore cheap
- 11:40homeowners can buy the electricity and
- 11:43convert it into hydrogen the hydrogen is
- 11:45stored and can later be converted into
- 11:48electricity and heat for the house in
- 11:51the long term homeowners will also be
- 11:53able to use their micro CHP unit to sell
- 11:56Surplus electricity back to the power
- 11:58system when there is no wind and the
- 12:00electricity price is high for
- 12:03example in future we will be consumers
- 12:06and producers of electricity at the same
- 12:08time with an electric car in the garage
- 12:11heat pump coils under the lawn a micro
- 12:14CHP unit in the basement and
- 12:16photovoltaic cells on the roof we will
- 12:19become what are known as prosumers
- 12:21producers and consumers of
- 12:25energy the houses of the future are
- 12:27insulated and energy op imized for
- 12:29extremely low energy consumption zero
- 12:33energy or plus energy houses will be
- 12:35built and will be able to intelligently
- 12:37control the charging of the electric car
- 12:40our heat consumption and the starting
- 12:42and stopping of the washing machine and
- 12:44other electric appliances and the whole
- 12:47process will be as easy as using a
- 12:49modern
- 12:50smartphone all this will be possible if
- 12:53we use our energy intelligently
- 13:01the Energy System of the future is
- 13:03intelligent we call it smart grid
- 13:06advanced computer control supports the
- 13:08digital monitoring coordination and
- 13:11control of power generation transport
- 13:14load management and consumption building
- 13:17a smart grid represents the biggest
- 13:19change in the power system since Denmark
- 13:21along with the rest of the world
- 13:23switched from direct current to
- 13:25alternating current some people even
- 13:27draw parallels with the internet just as
- 13:30the internet revolutionized in a few
