Small Channels: Do THIS and the YouTube Algorithm Will LOVE You! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I'm not going to lie to you. If it feels
- 0:01like the YouTube algorithm is ignoring
- 0:03your small channel, you might actually
- 0:05be right. Now, that's not to say that
- 0:07it's the algorithm's fault. So, in this
- 0:09video, I'm going to show you how it
- 0:11works, how to fix a problem, and a
- 0:13secret weapon that will supercharge your
- 0:15channel. And it all starts with a one
- 0:17minute explainer. That's right. I'm
- 0:19going to show you how the algorithm
- 0:21works in 60 seconds, and you can follow
- 0:24along with me. Open up an incognito
- 0:26desktop browser and go to youtube.com.
- 0:28accept the cookies and you'll see this
- 0:29very simple message. Try searching to
- 0:32get started. Start watching videos to
- 0:34help us, that's YouTube, build a feed of
- 0:37videos that you'll love. What the
- 0:38algorithm is basically saying to the
- 0:40viewer here is I ain't taking any
- 0:42responsibility for the recommendations I
- 0:44give you until you watch something. I
- 0:46need data. So, let's say as a viewer, we
- 0:48are a tech enthusiast and right now
- 0:50we're interested in the iPhone 17 in
- 0:52particular. All right, then let's watch
- 0:54this video. I thought this would be the
- 0:56most obvious year ever to go for the
- 0:58>> and now that I'm watching this video,
- 1:00let's see what else is recommended to
- 1:01me. Yeah, that seems relevant. I'll
- 1:03watch that
- 1:06and then I'll watch this and this and
- 1:08that. To give this a fair shot, you
- 1:10probably want to watch between five and
- 1:1210 videos on the same topic and then go
- 1:14back to the homepage. And what do we
- 1:16find here? A lot more videos on the
- 1:18exact or very similar topics. That in a
- 1:21nutshell is how the YouTube algorithm
- 1:23works. I as a viewer decide what
- 1:27recommendations I am going to see.
- 1:29>> The main job of the algorithm is to
- 1:31serve the user when they show up. A lot
- 1:33of creators think about things from the
- 1:35creator perspective. Oh well, I make a
- 1:37video and then YouTube pushes it out to
- 1:40a bunch of people. For the most part,
- 1:41recommendations and search don't get
- 1:44pushed out. They get kind of pulled from
- 1:46viewers.
- 1:47>> That's Todd, by the way. He's been
- 1:48working for YouTube on the algorithm for
- 1:51more than a decade. So, if you're going
- 1:52to listen to anybody, it should be him.
- 1:54Of course, new videos should be
- 1:56something YouTube is interested in. But
- 1:58what it gets far more excited about are
- 2:01new and returning viewers visiting the
- 2:03platform. Its primary goal is to serve
- 2:05their needs. And it does it through 20
- 2:08years of data gathered from billions of
- 2:11users watching, I don't know, a
- 2:14bazillion videos. It's why some of you
- 2:16never get recommended Mr. beast videos
- 2:19even though he has 450 million
- 2:22subscribers, but will recommend you
- 2:24videos on that very niche topic from
- 2:26that tiny channel you love to watch. So
- 2:29now you know how the algorithm works.
- 2:31How do you fix it? You don't forget
- 2:34about the algorithm. Focus on the
- 2:36audience. You can use this simple
- 2:38incognito viewing session whenever you
- 2:40want to get an understanding of what
- 2:42your audience is watching. But that is
- 2:44just the beginning because we can turn
- 2:46this mini hack into a permanent
- 2:48resource. All you need to do is create a
- 2:50brand new YouTube account that can be
- 2:52connected to the same Gmail account as
- 2:55your main YouTube channel. Now, this
- 2:57account won't be your new channel, but
- 3:00it will be your perfect viewer. Just
- 3:02like we did before with the incognito
- 3:04session, we're going to search for
- 3:05topics that we're interested in as a
- 3:07viewer of our main channel and watch
- 3:10them, lots of them, and only videos on
- 3:13that topic. What this will do is create
- 3:15a pure unpoluted watch history. It tells
- 3:19YouTube, I'm a viewer only interested in
- 3:22this topic, so give me more videos about
- 3:24it. And then usually 24 hours later when
- 3:28you go back to the homepage of that
- 3:30YouTube account, it will be dominated by
- 3:33that topic. It tells you as a creator
- 3:36what channels people are watching, what
- 3:38topics they're interested in, and what
- 3:41packaging works for this niche. Now, in
- 3:43the YouTube studio, there is a feature
- 3:45that shows you similar channels to you
- 3:47and similar videos, but it's a very
- 3:50limited number of channels and videos,
- 3:52and it's often not available to small
- 3:54channels and never is. With this
- 3:55technique, you basically have an
- 3:57infinite set of results that you can
- 3:59update in real time. So, let's just
- 4:01quickly recap what we've done there.
- 4:03Create a brand new YouTube account.
- 4:06Watch at least 10 videos on the topic
- 4:08that your YouTube channel is about and
- 4:10only videos on that topic. leave that
- 4:12account for 24 hours and then check back
- 4:14in. This is the most reliable,
- 4:16consistent, and transparent way of
- 4:19demonstrating what videos your target
- 4:21audience is pulling towards them from
- 4:24the YouTube algorithm. But wait, there's
- 4:26more. I never said that was the secret
- 4:29weapon. This is with a Vid IQ browser
- 4:32extension installed, you'll see this
- 4:34filters button on YouTube. And what this
- 4:36allows you to do is fine-tune the
- 4:37results you see on screen. So, in this
- 4:40example, let's say we are a small
- 4:41channel based on dog training, and we
- 4:43want to see what's working for channels
- 4:45under 25,000 subscribers. That's exactly
- 4:48what the filters tool is designed to do.
- 4:50And look at this. A channel with 5,000
- 4:53subscribers with a monster video about
- 4:56cutting dog nails. Maybe that's a topic
- 4:59I should explore further.
- 5:00>> Are you scared of cutting a dog's nails
- 5:01too short? Do you want to know how to
- 5:03cut them perfectly every time? My name
- 5:04is AJ and in this video I'm going to
- 5:06show you all the techniques, tips, and
- 5:08tricks as well as my secret technique to
- 5:10cut any dog's nails like a professional.
- 5:13>> Yeah, classic tutorial intro there with
- 5:15a nice little hook to keep people
- 5:17watching for that secret technique. Kind
- 5:19of what I did in this video that you're
- 5:21still watching. And since we are now on
- 5:23the watch page, we have a new set of
- 5:25video recommendations which are now
- 5:27hyperfocused on a particular topic,
- 5:29which is where we can take advantage of
- 5:31the filters tool again to find even more
- 5:33video ideas, video packaging, and
- 5:36outliers that work for small channels.
- 5:38There is a free version of the filters
- 5:40tool if you want to check it out. But if
- 5:42you want to unlock the full potential of
- 5:44the tool along with everything else here
- 5:46at VidIQ, from a script writing tool to
- 5:48a thumbnail generator, then I have an
- 5:51exclusive bonus just for you for getting
- 5:53this far into the video. Check out the
- 5:55description for more details. Look, we
- 5:57can try and tell you how the YouTube
- 5:59algorithm works a hundred different
- 6:00ways, but if you can show yourself by
- 6:03simply acting as a viewer, you will have
- 6:06the best research tool you could ever
- 6:08ask for, meaning you should get a load
- 6:11more of these in the future. And as for
- 6:13that filters tool, well, you just got a
- 6:15sneak peek at how powerful it is. This
- 6:20is how you unlock its full potential.
