  2. 0:08hi dr mamari here by now i'm sure you
  3. 0:11all know my name i repeated this one
  4. 0:13more time also
  5. 0:16i'm performing the experiment for you
  6. 0:19single and double displacement
  7. 0:22reactions
  8. 0:23uh
  9. 0:25the purpose of the
  10. 0:27recording
  11. 0:28is for you to
  12. 0:31record your observation
  13. 0:34i'm not going to write down everything
  14. 0:36for you and to just show you what
  15. 0:38happened explain what happened and you
  16. 0:40are going to
  17. 0:41record the observation yourself so be
  18. 0:44prepared
  19. 0:46when you are watching this video so you
  20. 0:48have your data sheet already open
  21. 0:51so you can actually record your
  22. 0:54observation one
  23. 0:55single displacement double displacement
  24. 0:58in general is a displacement reaction
  25. 1:02you are starting with the reactants and
  26. 1:05then you have your product
  27. 1:07so a general format for single
  28. 1:09displacement is a plus b that gives
  29. 1:13a c plus d
  30. 1:14a is going to be element
  31. 1:17b is going to be a solution so it's a
  32. 1:20methyl ion or you have a ionic compound
  33. 1:24and then the product you're going to
  34. 1:27have another solution with a new metal
  35. 1:30if the reaction takes place
  36. 1:32the reaction takes place under what
  37. 1:34condition if the element that you're
  38. 1:36adding
  39. 1:37is more reactive than the metal ion
  40. 1:40metal ion has a positive charge the
  41. 1:42element that you're adding neutral
  42. 1:44because you take piece of magnesium or
  43. 1:46zinc it's a neutral compound so you have
  44. 1:49this neutral
  45. 1:50magnesium doesn't have any charges so if
  46. 1:54magnesium
  47. 1:56let's say is more reactive than
  48. 1:59copper
  49. 2:00and you have your copper in the solution
  50. 2:03copper has a two plus charge in the
  51. 2:04solution so you have metal ion is called
  52. 2:07copper iron copper two plus that would
  53. 2:10be your metal ion the metal that you are
  54. 2:12adding this is just an example
  55. 2:14is magnesium so your magnesium is a
  56. 2:17metal is your magnesium and your metal
  57. 2:19ion is
  58. 2:20uh copper 2 plus snap if magnesium is
  59. 2:23more reactive than copper
  60. 2:26magnesium
  61. 2:27more reactive metal than copper that
  62. 2:29means magnesium can give electrons
  63. 2:32when the magnesium gives electron to
  64. 2:33copper copper is going to take the
  65. 2:35electrons basically be reduced
  66. 2:38and changes to copper zero or copper in
  67. 2:41the elemental position
  68. 2:44or
  69. 2:45neutral copper
  70. 2:47so
  71. 2:48if copper comes out of the solution
  72. 2:50magnesium goes into solution there are a
  73. 2:52couple things we have to see we have to
  74. 2:53see like particles like the
  75. 2:56the cupric color red particles coming
  76. 2:58out of the solution that's copper
  77. 3:00magnesium should disappear that's
  78. 3:02another evidence
  79. 3:04copper sulfate is blue color
  80. 3:06magnesium sulfate is uh
  81. 3:09no color it's a colorless solution so
  82. 3:12the color of the blue has to also be
  83. 3:15lightened so it should get lighter and
  84. 3:17lighter as the copper is coming out of
  85. 3:20the solution so the color blue color
  86. 3:22should fade it out it should get if you
  87. 3:25add enough magnesium and you wait
  88. 3:26forever
  89. 3:27of course it's going to be colorless
  90. 3:29solution so for me because it's
  91. 3:32qualitative analysis as soon as i see
  92. 3:34evidence for the reaction i'm going to
  93. 3:36move on to the next one
  94. 3:38so i'm not going to wait until the all
  95. 3:41of the magnesium react with all the
  96. 3:42color you know the full blue color is
  97. 3:44going to disappear
  98. 3:47so
  99. 3:48make sure
  100. 3:49you are going to record your observation
  101. 3:51fast with me
  102. 4:01and part one
  103. 4:03you are going to follow the procedure
  104. 4:05read the procedure read the introduction
  105. 4:07part before you actually record your
  106. 4:09observation is like basically coming
  107. 4:11ready to the lab you have done your
  108. 4:13pre-lap already you know what single
  109. 4:15displacement is what is double
  110. 4:17displacement what are you trying to
  111. 4:18what's the purpose of the experiment
  112. 4:20what you're trying to do
  113. 4:21but i start with the following procedure
  114. 4:24with just a minor explanation about the
  115. 4:26experiment what we are doing so you have
  116. 4:28an idea of what we are doing in case you
  117. 4:30watch the video first we're going to
  118. 4:32follow the procedure label test tubes a2
  119. 4:35f and
  120. 4:36replace these chemicals that is given in
  121. 4:39the procedure for a is going to be lead
  122. 4:41nitrate
  123. 4:44a is going to be
  124. 4:46lead nitrate so i'm going to add lead
  125. 4:49nitrate to first one just following the
  126. 4:51procedure adding that nitrate to the
  127. 4:53first test
  128. 4:55okay
  129. 4:57silver nitrate
  130. 4:59to b
  131. 5:03copper sulfate to c
  132. 5:10let nitrate
  133. 5:12to d
  134. 5:15magnesium chloride to e
  135. 5:18sink all right
  136. 5:21to
  137. 5:22f
  138. 5:24nacl2
  139. 5:26g
  140. 5:30nacl2g
  141. 5:32and kcl2
  142. 5:35h
  143. 5:38and step two says
  144. 5:41to get the copper
  145. 5:44zinc
  146. 5:45and magnesium
  147. 5:47until there are clean pieces of copper
  148. 5:49magnesium and zinc
  149. 5:51to the
  150. 5:52first one
  151. 5:54we are going to add
  152. 5:56to a and b
  153. 5:58we are going to add piece of copper to a
  154. 6:01and b
  155. 6:03i try to polish it just to make sure
  156. 6:05that it's shiny it's clean
  157. 6:09okay a
  158. 6:11and b
  159. 6:21to test tube c and d i'm going to add
  160. 6:25a piece of zinc metal
  161. 6:29so take two pieces of zinc
  162. 6:32one for each
  163. 6:34magnesium two f g and
  164. 6:37h
  165. 6:38take care three pieces of magnesium
  166. 6:49going to polish them
  167. 6:51what are we looking for
  168. 6:53we are looking for evidence of a
  169. 6:55reaction
  170. 6:57meaning that the metal
  171. 7:01it's going to go in
  172. 7:03and the metal ion comes out of the
  173. 7:06solution
  174. 7:09for single displacement you have this
  175. 7:11table
  176. 7:12that you need to fill up
  177. 7:14so for a
  178. 7:17when we have like lead nitrate
  179. 7:19the methyl iron is going to be
  180. 7:22lead two plus because it's electro
  181. 7:25nitrate
  182. 7:26the metal that we added is copper
  183. 7:31copper
  184. 7:32plus the
  185. 7:36length
  186. 7:37if there is a reaction
  187. 7:39if we see any reaction here we are going
  188. 7:41to record reaction and if there is no
  189. 7:45reaction we record
  190. 7:47no reaction so we have reaction or no
  191. 7:49reaction so we're going to say
  192. 7:51uh no reaction if there is a if there's
  193. 7:55evidence for reaction
  194. 7:57if the color did not change
  195. 8:00if the
  196. 8:01the let didn't come out so we didn't see
  197. 8:03any particles of gray color of lead
  198. 8:06coming out
  199. 8:08then there is no reaction so we just say
  200. 8:11no reaction for the first one test tube
  201. 8:13a
  202. 8:14then there is no reaction okay make sure
  203. 8:17you record that
  204. 8:22for b
  205. 8:26okay
  206. 8:27see what happens for b
  207. 8:30the particles
  208. 8:32silver particles are coming out
  209. 8:35and copper is going in
  210. 8:38the solution change color and we see
  211. 8:40those particles
  212. 8:43the gray color or silver color particles
  213. 8:45coming out
  214. 8:47so there is a reaction here
  215. 8:49your metal ion
  216. 8:51was silver
  217. 8:53and the metal is
  218. 8:55copper
  219. 8:56copper gave electrons to
  220. 9:02for
  221. 9:04lead
  222. 9:05and
  223. 9:07i'm sorry this is zinc
  224. 9:09with copper sulfate
  225. 9:11test tube c
  226. 9:13copper sulfate
  227. 9:15with zinc
  228. 9:16you see the color
  229. 9:20see those particles
  230. 9:23in the test tube
  231. 9:25that's the evidence that yes there was a
  232. 9:28reaction those are like copper pieces of
  233. 9:31copper coming out and lead is going into
  234. 9:34the solution so we see this red color
  235. 9:37particles that is copper is coming out
  236. 9:39so for test tube c
  237. 9:42there is a reaction
  238. 9:44okay test tube see there is a reaction
  239. 9:47your metal
  240. 9:49was copper the metal that was added was
  241. 9:53zinc
  242. 9:54and there is a reaction
  243. 9:57zinc was added to
  244. 10:02lead
  245. 10:03zlink is added to lead nitrate
  246. 10:06so d is lead nitrate
  247. 10:08zinc reacted with the lead nitrate zinc
  248. 10:12is going in
  249. 10:14and the lead is coming out see the
  250. 10:16particles the particles are on the wall
  251. 10:19just bringing closer to the camera for
  252. 10:21you to see it
  253. 10:23the
  254. 10:24zinc
  255. 10:25reacted with lead nitrate as well
  256. 10:28what does it mean
  257. 10:30it means zinc is more reactive than lead
  258. 10:34zinc can give electrons to
  259. 10:37lead basically this is like oxidation
  260. 10:39reduction type reaction zinc is being
  261. 10:42oxidized lead is being reduced
  262. 10:47e
  263. 10:48what do we have for e
  264. 10:50we have zinc
  265. 10:52and
  266. 10:53magnesium
  267. 10:57zinc and
  268. 10:58magnesium okay i don't see any reaction
  269. 11:01so no reaction
  270. 11:03zinc magnesium no reaction
  271. 11:11next one magnesium is
  272. 11:14with f is
  273. 11:17magnesium with zinc
  274. 11:19if
  275. 11:20zinc doesn't have reaction with
  276. 11:22magnesium then magnesium has must have
  277. 11:25reaction with the with the zinc when is
  278. 11:27like the zinc is in the solution i think
  279. 11:31in the solution so metal ion is zinc and
  280. 11:34the metal is magnesium and that is a yes
  281. 11:37reaction
  282. 11:38okay there's reaction here you see the
  283. 11:41particles coming out
  284. 11:43and the magnesium is going in into
  285. 11:45solution so for a test tube f
  286. 11:49there is a reaction
  287. 11:51okay with a sub f there is a reaction
  288. 11:53when you have magnesium in zinc
  289. 11:59magnesium with sodium chloride clear
  290. 12:02solution nothing happened no particle
  291. 12:04came out no reaction
  292. 12:06so you have no reaction here for
  293. 12:08magnesium
  294. 12:09with sodium chloride
  295. 12:12g test tube g no reaction
  296. 12:16tester general reaction
  297. 12:19h
  298. 12:20magnesium with sodium
  299. 12:23chloride no reaction either see it's
  300. 12:25clear solution no particles came out
  301. 12:28so no reaction
  302. 12:30letter h there is no reaction
  303. 12:37seven
  304. 12:39hopefully you can record all your
  305. 12:40observation and and uh complete the data
  306. 12:44sheet
  307. 12:44for
  308. 12:46experiment seven and turn it in as an
  309. 12:49assignment to your professor if it's me
  310. 12:51or anyone
  311. 12:52else
  312. 12:58[Music]
