3. 0:05So I work with the Navy.
4. 0:07I've worked with the Navy seals and I asked them like, who do
5. 0:11you, how do you pick, like the guys that go on seal team six?
6. 0:14Right?
7. 0:14Cause they're the best of the best, of the best of the best.
8. 0:17And they drew it, they drew a graph for me.
9. 0:20And on one side they drew, they wrote the word for performance.
10. 0:23And on the other side, they wrote the word trust.
11. 0:25The way they define the terms is performance on the battlefield and
12. 0:29performance off the battlefield.
13. 0:31So this is your skills.
14. 0:32This is, did you make your quarterly earnings?
15. 0:34Whatever.
16. 0:35However you want to translate it, right?
17. 0:36Performance, it's traditional.
18. 0:38This is how are you off the battlefield?
19. 0:40What kind of person are you?
20. 0:41The way they put it is, I may trust you with my life, but do I trust
21. 0:45you with my money and my wife?
22. 0:49Their seals.
23. 0:53This is what they told me.
24. 0:55Nobody wants this person, the low performer of low trust, of course.
25. 0:59Of course, everybody wants this person, the high performer
26. 1:02of high trust, of course.
27. 1:04What they learned is that this person, the high performer of low trust, is a
28. 1:09toxic leader and a toxic team member.
29. 1:11And they would rather have a medium of high trust, sometimes even
30. 1:15a low performer of high trust.
31. 1:16It's a relative scale over this person.
32. 1:19This is the highest performing organization on the planet,
33. 1:22and this person is more important than this person.
34. 1:25And the problem in business is we have lopsided metrics.
35. 1:28We have 1,000,001 metrics to measure someone's performance,
36. 1:31and negligible to no metrics to measure someone's trustworthiness.
37. 1:35And so what we end up doing is promoting or bonusing toxicity in
38. 1:42our businesses, which is bad for the long game, because it eventually
39. 1:46destroys the whole organization.
40. 1:48The irony is it's unbelievably easy to find these people.
41. 1:53Go to any team and say, who's the asshole?
42. 2:04They will all point to the same person.
43. 2:07Equally.
44. 2:08If you go to any team and say, who do you trust more than anybody else?
45. 2:11Who's always got your back?
46. 2:12And when the chips are down, they will be there with you.
47. 2:14They will also all point to the same person.
48. 2:16It's the best gifted, natural leader who's getting, who is creating an
49. 2:20environment for everybody else to succeed.
50. 2:21And they may not be your most individual, highest performer, but that person,
51. 2:24you better keep them on your team.
