Silent Hill: Townfall - All Endings Explained (Spoilers) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01Let me know, Simon. We can make this
- 0:04right.
- 0:06>> [music]
- 0:08>> There are five endings to see in Silent
- 0:10Hill: Townfall. Two of these are running
- 0:13gags that you'll find across the Silent
- 0:15Hill series, which are the dog and UFO
- 0:17endings. Both are locked behind New Game
- 0:19Plus, but on your first playthrough,
- 0:21there are three possible endings you can
- 0:23see, called Abandoned, Forever, and
- 0:26Justice. None of these endings are
- 0:28canon, but each one is designed to
- 0:31reflect your play style and
- 0:32understanding of the events that have
- 0:34taken place in 1996.
- 0:36And while any one of the three is
- 0:38possible in that first playthrough, from
- 0:40what we've experienced, the likelihood
- 0:42is you'll see the Abandoned or Forever
- 0:45conclusions first. Here's everything
- 0:47we've uncovered to give you a full
- 0:48picture of St. Emilia's story and to
- 0:51dissect what each ending means for
- 0:53Simon, Zoe, and Richard.
- 1:06Before we dive into the endings though,
- 1:08it's important to understand what's
- 1:09actually going on in St. Emilia. It's a
- 1:12small, traditional coastal town that
- 1:13you'll find across plenty of places in
- 1:15the UK. There's a little community
- 1:17garden that sits in the center of a
- 1:19quaint high street and a brutalist
- 1:21housing estate. It's clear that everyone
- 1:23knows everyone, from handwritten notes
- 1:25found in houses to messages left between
- 1:27neighbors on answering machines, and the
- 1:29tiny family clinic and single medical
- 1:31center that serves everyone.
- 1:34The Chapman Energy Group Tower looms
- 1:37over the rest of the town, a sleek,
- 1:38modern skyscraper looking down on
- 1:41everything around it. We see repeating
- 1:43surnames across Zoe's list of patients
- 1:46and those mentioned in CEG records. CEG
- 1:49clearly doesn't fit in with the rest of
- 1:51the town's vibe, but with so few shops
- 1:53and opportunities, it's It's a beacon of
- 1:55hope and prosperity, offering jobs
- 1:57across its expanding projects.
- 2:00>> Come back to me, Simon.
- 2:02Show me you understand.
- 2:04Just give me a sign.
- 2:06>> If you've been paying close attention
- 2:07and tuning in to all of those CRTV
- 2:10signals, picking up every document you
- 2:12can find and accessing private emails,
- 2:14you'll learn that our protagonist, Simon
- 2:16Odell, was the person responsible for
- 2:18conducting the site assessment for the
- 2:20SWDP facility, which is a CEG run oil
- 2:24rig that sits off the coast of Saint
- 2:26Emilia. Simon is also due to speak on
- 2:29behalf of Richard Shaw, the suspicious
- 2:32CEO of CEG at a tribunal. Richard has
- 2:35been suspended by the board of CEG for
- 2:37being complicit in safety failures that
- 2:40ended up killing 96 workers in an oil
- 2:42rig explosion just off the coast of
- 2:44Saint Emilia, of which Simon is the only
- 2:47survivor. This is why we see the 96
- 2:50marks etched on that door that begins
- 2:52Simon's journey and again on the
- 2:53whiteboard in the Shaw Front Family
- 2:55Clinic. We're repeatedly shown the 96
- 2:58marks to drive home how big the disaster
- 3:01is that has rocked Saint Emilia. To be
- 3:03clear, Simon was not responsible for the
- 3:06explosion. From an email we find marked
- 3:08Odell site visit, we know that
- 3:10engineering told operations to keep
- 3:13output low and that things weren't
- 3:15reported because there was no faith in
- 3:17Shaw's response. Shaw was already
- 3:19furious that the usual guy wasn't
- 3:21conducting the site assessment, implying
- 3:23that he'd already been using some shady
- 3:25tactics to keep production flowing. The
- 3:27engineers thought they'd be able to deal
- 3:28with the situation without having Shaw
- 3:30breathing down their necks.
- 3:32>> I know what you saw.
- 3:35Carry the weight on your back.
- 3:40Keep it all covered until it covers you,
- 3:42too.
- 3:44Can't even see yourself anymore.
- 3:48I hope you feed on that way for me until
- 3:50you burst.
- 3:51Until you choke.
- 3:53>> Unfortunately, disaster
- 3:54>> strikes when the night shift officer
- 3:56realizes that the day shift officer
- 3:58hadn't noticed a problem with the
- 3:59reciprocal compressor unit on valve B.
- 4:10We can assume that this is the same
- 4:12faulty RCU unit that Shaw refuses to
- 4:15replace. This led to the CEG's union
- 4:17requesting that Odell be flown in from
- 4:19the US. Thanks to a whistleblower
- 4:21raising concerns about Shaw's disregard
- 4:24for safety protocols.
- 4:33The reason that Shaw wouldn't replace
- 4:35the RCU, it would cost CEG millions to
- 4:37take the facility offline. And they had
- 4:39already begun aesthetic renovations to
- 4:42their big fancy tower. From the minutes
- 4:44documented on January 11th, 1996, just a
- 4:48week before the disaster, the
- 4:49renovations were already having problems
- 4:51with electrics, plumbing, and power was
- 4:55failing, which collectively were
- 4:57delaying the renovation and costing CEG
- 4:59more money than anticipated. Richard's
- 5:02plans to cleanse his hands of the
- 5:03expensive and explosive consequences of
- 5:05his actions is to blame an engineer who
- 5:08lost his life in the tragedy. We learn
- 5:10through a file on Odell that Richard
- 5:12attempts to keep as many people from
- 5:14Saint Emilia in his pocket as he can and
- 5:16believes he knows what's best for the
- 5:18town. But Odell poses a risk to Richard.
- 5:21Firstly, he has no direct connection to
- 5:23Richard and was specifically chosen
- 5:25because of this fact. He's respected,
- 5:28has clout, and Shaw won't know what
- 5:30Simon saw until he speaks to the
- 5:32tribunal.
- 5:33>> In your professional opinion, do you
- 5:35believe that there was anything CEG or
- 5:38indeed Mr. Richard Shaw could have done
- 5:41[clears throat] to prevent the disaster
- 5:43at SWDP?
- 5:44>> To close the gap in their connection and
- 5:46have more control over the outcome.
- 5:48Richard helps Simon with a heart
- 5:50transplant. Simon was the only survivor
- 5:52of the SWDP disaster and was taken to
- 5:55hospital suffering from a pulmonary
- 5:56edema and a chest wound with a foreign
- 5:59object embedded. The box we see in Zoe's
- 6:02house when Simon is searching for her
- 6:04has the same post-it note stuck to it as
- 6:06Richard's gift to later on, which is the
- 6:08pistol. It is later confirmed that
- 6:10Richard provides the heart for Simon so
- 6:12he feels like he owns it and therefore
- 6:15owns Simon. This is the bargaining chip
- 6:17that he uses to get Simon to stick to
- 6:19the script to clear Shaw's name.
- 6:22>> Zoe? Zoe Yellis?
- 6:24It's Simon.
- 6:25>> As for Zoe, she is the one who takes
- 6:27care of Simon. In fact, she's the
- 6:29inexperienced nurse who is roped into
- 6:31taking care of patients during the
- 6:32crisis. At least, that's the narrative
- 6:34that Dr. Glenn feeds throughout the
- 6:36entire ordeal of her trying to keep
- 6:38Simon alive. All health care
- 6:40professionals are transferred to the
- 6:41medical center in February to help with
- 6:43the relief efforts after the Southwell
- 6:45disaster.
- 6:46>> Dr. Glenn.
- 6:47>> Nurse, I was hoping for someone more
- 6:50qualified, but
- 6:51I suppose you'll have to do.
- 6:53>> We learn from the hand-delivered letter
- 6:55in Zoe's house that she's blamed for not
- 6:57being able to help enough, especially
- 6:59with Joe. As a result, Zoe attempts to
- 7:01resign, but she's stuck in St. Amelia
- 7:03behind the door in room 204 waiting for
- 7:06a chance to leave. Zoe believes that she
- 7:08can only give the town and Simon what
- 7:10they need by leaving. Meanwhile, GHB
- 7:13Legal is attempting to get hold of her
- 7:15because her testimony is vital in the
- 7:17case due to her connection to Simon.
- 7:19It's clear that she's also a problem for
- 7:21Richard as well, which explains why he
- 7:23needs Simon to open the door so he can
- 7:26get to her.
- 7:26>> No matter how many different ways I try,
- 7:28I can't open
- 7:30that
- 7:32door.
- 7:33But you can.
- 7:35And I need you to do that now.
- 7:39To Zoe?
- 7:40>> At the top of the CEG tower, everything
- 7:43comes together. Simon understands that
- 7:45the town will listen to him and Richard
- 7:47tells Simon he's the only one who can
- 7:49open the door. Richard explains that he
- 7:51and Simon had an agreement and it only
- 7:53works if Simon needs Richard. Simon
- 7:55opens the door for Richard and Richard
- 7:57blasts a shotgun, seemingly taking out
- 8:00Zoe.
- 8:05Richard explains that Simon isn't just
- 8:07there for the agreement, but also for
- 8:09another reason. And realistically, it
- 8:11would have been easier for him if Simon
- 8:13had died.
- 8:14>> Oh, this would have been a lot easier if
- 8:16she had just let you die.
- 8:18>> As Simon makes his final descent into
- 8:20the other world, he gets a chance to
- 8:21witness the events that occurred on
- 8:23January 18th, 1996.
- 8:26The SWDP goes up in flames and people
- 8:29begin to jump off from the top deck, but
- 8:31rescue efforts aren't able to get close
- 8:32enough due to the explosion. As Odell
- 8:35understands what exactly happened that
- 8:36night, he rips the cannula from his hand
- 8:39and exits the other world.
- 8:45Back in the hospital, Shore reminds him
- 8:47of their agreement and that it's a done
- 8:49deal thanks to the heart he's given
- 8:51Simon. Simon is about to be Shore's star
- 8:53witness in the tribunal, but Simon is
- 8:55now having doubts and feels compelled to
- 8:57reveal the truth. And this is where your
- 9:00endings will diverge.
- 9:05In the abandoned ending, after Simon
- 9:07raises the flare gun, he shoots Richard
- 9:09with it straight into the heart. This
- 9:11response is, well, understandable. Simon
- 9:14keeps talking about returning to be
- 9:15punished, so killing Richard punishes
- 9:18the person who caused all of this. But
- 9:20it's also driven by anger and revenge
- 9:23and what is, unfortunately, a misguided
- 9:25attempt to give the heart back to Saint
- 9:27Amelia. By hoping to disconnect from
- 9:29Richard and break their agreement, Simon
- 9:31believes he'll be removing Saint
- 9:33Amelia's problem, but it only considers
- 9:35the heart that Richard gives to St.
- 9:37Amelia, which is not the metaphorical
- 9:39heart that beats in St. Amelia.
- 9:41Suddenly, multiple corpses of Richard
- 9:44appear around the dock, the skies turn
- 9:46red, and Simon clutches his head in
- 9:48pain. He drops the CRTV and a signal
- 9:51from Richard plays on it saying,
- 9:53>> It wasn't you, Simon.
- 9:57Simon.
- 9:59>> [music]
- 10:05>> We're then shown the vigil with
- 10:06close-ups of the victims of the disaster
- 10:09as voiceover from Zoe states, "You can't
- 10:11fix it." We then see Simon back in the
- 10:13hospital holding the scalpel and the
- 10:15camera slowly pans over to Richard, who
- 10:17is bleeding out on the floor. [music]
- 10:19The implication is that Simon's choices
- 10:21have left the people of St. Amelia
- 10:23abandoned. Richard is right when he
- 10:25provides the islands with jobs and
- 10:27stability, and with him gone, CEG will
- 10:29likely leave St. Amelia behind. But more
- 10:32importantly, they're not able to get the
- 10:33justice from the tribunal for what
- 10:35happened. And Richard doesn't just have
- 10:37to face what he's done. Instead, it just
- 10:39seems to make things worse. Simon takes
- 10:42away St. Amelia's chance for closure and
- 10:44it keeps everyone trapped in the cycle.
- 10:47>> I'm here, Simon.
- 10:50I'm not going anywhere.
- 10:52>> The forever ending starts with the same
- 10:54conversation, but when Simon raises the
- 10:56flare gun, he doesn't shoot Richard.
- 10:58Instead, he aims it into the air and
- 11:00fires it skyward. This lights up the sky
- 11:02in red and the enormous creature known
- 11:04as the collapse, which has been dropping
- 11:07the fallen from the skies, shows itself.
- 11:09That creature, which represents the
- 11:11town, comes down to Richard and we see
- 11:13Simon collapse holding his chest. Simon
- 11:16is then shown on a hospital bed being
- 11:18whisked into surgery. This is the same
- 11:20scene from the mission we completed as
- 11:22Zoe earlier. Zoe says she's not going
- 11:24anywhere, which implies that they're
- 11:26still stuck in the loop and it's
- 11:27beginning with Zoe again. And as Richard
- 11:30mentions in the CEG tower, it always
- 11:32begins with her. While Richard is still
- 11:34alive, it's unclear what happens when
- 11:36the creature comes down. And it seems
- 11:39that Simon still needs to do something
- 11:41differently to help Saint Emilia out.
- 11:44>> You don't get it.
- 11:45This place
- 11:47I see through it. I know how it works. I
- 11:49know what it wants.
- 11:51>> While there's no ending that should be
- 11:52considered canon, there's clearly one
- 11:55that breaks the cycle and feels like the
- 11:57good ending. If you want to achieve the
- 11:59ending, you need to take cues from the
- 12:01story and really think about the people
- 12:03of Saint Emilia. That means Simon cannot
- 12:05protect Richard, and Richard needs to be
- 12:07held accountable for his actions. Once
- 12:09again, Simon raises the flare gun, and
- 12:11just like the forever ending, he shoots
- 12:14it into the sky rather than at Richard.
- 12:16This time, when Simon says, "I'm giving
- 12:18it to them," he means it.
- 12:20>> You're not taking this from me.
- 12:22>> [snorts]
- 12:23>> You're right.
- 12:24I'm not.
- 12:26I'm giving it to them.
- 12:27>> As Richard falls to the floor, the
- 12:29creatures come down to him again. But
- 12:31this time, we see Simon stumble down the
- 12:33steps of the storefront. Again, he
- 12:35clutches his chest and collapses.
- 12:38Meanwhile, we see Zoe in room 204, which
- 12:41has an empty bed. She appears to leave
- 12:43her lanyard as she departs. Zoe can
- 12:45finally leave. She doesn't need to be
- 12:47there for Simon, and she can do what she
- 12:49promised the people of Saint Emilia
- 12:51she'll do, and leave town. If the cycle
- 12:53always begins with Zoe, her leaving
- 12:56means it can't [music] begin again. Then
- 12:58we see Richard and Simon. This time,
- 13:00Richard is holding the scalpel, and
- 13:02Simon is the one bleeding out. By losing
- 13:04Ordell, Richard has to face the music.
- 13:07He loses his scapegoat and can't clear
- 13:09his name. Everyone's story ending this
- 13:11way means justice for Saint Emilia,
- 13:13closure for the town people, and maybe
- 13:15even security and stability with CEG.
- 13:18And as we mentioned, there are, of
- 13:20course, the running joke endings in New
- 13:22Game Plus. If you manage to find all the
- 13:24important coins and strange books,
- 13:27you'll be able to unlock them both in a
- 13:29single run, too, with a well-constructed
- 13:31safe. It's much more fun to show you
- 13:33what these look like than try and
- 13:34explain them, but I will say I think the
- 13:37dog has a point. Let's check it out.
- 13:52>> [music]
- 14:07>> Warning,
- 14:08evacuation cryosleep process
- 14:11interrupted.
- 14:14Cryosleep chamber one for crew member
- 14:18Ordell interrupted.
- 14:21Cryosleep chamber two
- 14:24for crew member
- 14:26active.
- 14:27>> What the hell?
- 14:29>> Cryosleep chambers three through 20
- 14:33uninhabited.
- 14:35>> Hello?
- 14:36>> [panting]
- 14:37>> Someone there?
- 14:39>> Come back to me, Simon.
- 14:43Don't leave me here, Simon, please.
- 14:47Turn it around.
- 14:50>> What the hell?
- 14:51>> I know he would have talked you into
- 14:53leaving.
- 14:56I know he [clears throat] would have
- 14:57told you we were already gone.
- 15:01But we're not.
- 15:04We're still here.
- 15:17Simon, come back for us.
- 15:26>> I'm sorry, Simon.
- 15:56>> Really? [music]
- 15:57That's your answer?
- 16:08>> What the hell?
- 16:16>> [music]
- 16:27>> Listen,
- 16:28this has gone on far too long.
- 16:31Do you not think it's time this being
- 16:32turned off?
- 16:33Do you not think that maybe you could
- 16:35stop me and have a bit yourselves?
- 16:37Honestly, God, I've been sat waiting for
- 16:40one of you to place a coin in my head
- 16:42for what feels like an eternity.
- 16:46I've been freezing my ass off in here.
- 16:48Who let the dogs out?
- 16:50Think of the dogs.
- 16:53Come on.
- 16:54I'm putting an end to this.
- 16:59Oh, [ __ ] Come on.
- 17:35>> Yeah.
- 17:36No talking,
- 17:37and then shut up.
- 17:49>> [music]
- 17:52>> Put your
- 17:53hands away from me.
