- 0:03I haven't got a master plan or
- 0:08a very kind of organic in the way I let
- 0:11it come come at me you know I ran away
- 0:14from home at 17 to be a punk
- 0:18rocker completely green I just wanted to
- 0:22go where that was happening so packed my
- 0:25bags and left with absolutely no idea of
- 0:29what I wanted to do and I've just built
- 0:32a career around it I suppose and because
- 0:35I'm not classically trained in
- 0:40anything and it always involved a heavy
- 0:44visual sense especially on yourself or
- 0:48on other people that's why I do do a bit
- 0:50of styling a bit of jewelry you know if
- 0:53I haven't got it in my wardrobe I'll
- 0:54make it you know it's very much oh let's
- 0:58use a you know safety pins the classic
- 1:02but I started using materials that were
- 1:05not thought of
- 1:07as accessories or clothing I just used
- 1:10my creativity to plunder things from
- 1:14different areas and reinterpret it into
- 1:18a photo or a outfit for a club or a
- 1:23piece of jewelry for a shop
- 1:27or I mean it's not the best way to go
- 1:31about
- 1:32it I suppose one of my favorite times
- 1:36must have been when I did actually run
- 1:38away from home and it was
- 1:421977 and I came to London but didn't
- 1:45really know anyone in
- 1:47London so I went to
- 1:50Manchester and it really had its own
- 1:53scene going on up
- 1:56there
- 1:58so it was kind of freedom for me that so
- 2:02I was really happy then even though I
- 2:04didn't know what I was going to
- 2:06do it was a time of great kind of
- 2:10everyone was experimenting and changing
- 2:13their look and listening to new sound
- 2:17and that was a great time and then that
- 2:21of course when by the time I got back I
- 2:23got to London it was part of the new
- 2:26romantic time and that's really when I
- 2:28became much more more aware of
- 2:33fashion from like you know Blitz and all
- 2:36those kind of clubs low
- 2:39points well I was idiot enough to become
- 2:42a heroin addict through part of my
- 2:46career and that was a bit
- 2:51low and I wouldn't advise it on
- 2:55anyone it didn't stop me working but it
- 2:58kind of stopped me
- 3:01I think I was quite unhappy and it just
- 3:03helped Shield it so that was a big
- 3:09mistake one of the first people I worked
- 3:12with was a designer called Anthony price
- 3:16and Anthony had seen me trolling around
- 3:19heaven or something wearing all these
- 3:21mad pieces of jewelry and asked me to do
- 3:24a show and I at the time I was only
- 3:26making jewelry for myself it was the
- 3:28first time I was working with big makeup
- 3:31artists and big models and it was a big
- 3:34number at Camden
- 3:37Palace so I suppose Anthony kind of kick
- 3:40started me
- 3:43into thinking a bit more seriously about
- 3:47fashion before I worked with Anthony I
- 3:51just thought it was like dressing
- 3:54up going out causing trouble
- 4:01I think every designer or artist loves
- 4:05to have one someone around who inspires
- 4:08them and I'm really lucky with
- 4:10that uh when I first started it was a
- 4:14glorious girl called Scarlet Napoleon
- 4:18Bordello and we used to wear I used to
- 4:21make jewelry for her me and Scarlet used
- 4:24to have these dresses David holer made
- 4:26for
- 4:28us like these mad sham dresses he
- 4:32made really cheap well 25 quid for the
- 4:36dress So we had like two of those and
- 4:38then I'd make a new piece of jewelry
- 4:40each week that's how it kind of got
- 4:44going well her full name was Scarlet
- 4:47Napoleon
- 4:49Bordello I don't think she was born with
- 4:52it it was when we were all inventing
- 4:55names in the early 80s
- 5:02she was the one that actually came up
- 5:04with the
- 5:05blame oh
- 5:08yeah car's got a question JY what's your
- 5:12real
- 5:13name buger
- 5:16off I adore children as well so I've got
- 5:20quite a lot of God children that are all
- 5:22different ages now cuz I love the way
- 5:25that they look at things when they come
- 5:28to the studio or or something it's like
- 5:31a candy store for them so I just
- 5:33encourage them to make something or I
- 5:36think I'm quite child like in the way I
- 5:38approach things there's a Simplicity to
- 5:43it I've got an ear thing I'm not sure
- 5:47whether it's a fetish cuz I've never met
- 5:49anyone else that has it they don't have
- 5:52to be
- 5:53big but ears just send
- 5:57me and in Brazil they do have fabulous
- 6:00little ones all the boys have these
- 6:03little ones that curve
- 6:12around What attracted you to the safety
- 6:18pin it's just such a genius piece of
- 6:23design and if you use them in volume you
- 6:27can really make a piece of arm out of
- 6:30it well there was two pieces that I made
- 6:33when I first started and I was didn't
- 6:36have a
- 6:37clue and one I found these brilliant big
- 6:41black wooden beads they were quite big
- 6:46and I did
- 6:47four strands of them that kind of fitted
- 6:51into each other so it's like your whole
- 6:54chest was just these big fat wooden
- 6:57black shiny beads and then another piece
- 7:00I made was out of string and I dyed it
- 7:05and I dyed it and I dyed it and all
- 7:07stuck together and then I started tying
- 7:09it up and it we used to call it the
- 7:11Doctor Who necklace all it was was dyed
- 7:15string tied it looked like some mad kind
- 7:18of coral or something but in fact it was
- 7:22just string from
- 7:24wwest so someone wants to know about the
- 7:26day that you shot
- 7:30someone's Manchild video oh yeah n
- 7:33cherri's n well that was a little piece
- 7:36of heaven it was with Jean Baptist
- 7:40mandino almost all the characters in it
- 7:43are
- 7:44family and he shoved me in it as
- 7:48well which was a bit
- 7:53unfortunate me next to Barry C and thank
- 7:57you very much onti M
- 8:00know all the kids everyone did
- 8:03everything in one take I took about
- 8:07eight what was your first big fashion
- 8:09editorial
- 8:11feature if you
- 8:13remember it was for
- 8:17ID and it was called stolen
- 8:20property and there was a fabulous model
- 8:23around at the time called Jenny howth
- 8:26and Mark Leon was supposed to done the p
- 8:31pictures and Jenny arrived and I
- 8:33couldn't believe that I got Jenny cuz
- 8:36she was big into National star at the
- 8:39time Jenny came in one Sunday and Mark
- 8:42ended up giving Jenny the cameras cuz
- 8:45she's a genius photographer as well so I
- 8:48had to call up Scarlet go Scarlet what
- 8:51are you doing can you get the bus over
- 8:53now without a model so me
- 8:56and Scarlet ended up modeling it while
- 9:00Jenny took the pictures
- 9:03so I haven't done an editorial for a
- 9:06while but I've got like three in my head
- 9:10that need to be dealt so I'm still
- 9:13researching on that I know the kind of
- 9:15photographers I want to approach I like
- 9:18to take time to think about it cuz you
- 9:21don't always have that luxury but I'm a
- 9:24great believer in
- 9:26research cuz when I first started I
- 9:29didn't know anything about fashion so I
- 9:31made it my kind
- 9:33of thing to research every I mean I do
- 9:38it with things like this like these
- 9:40ideas books where I just pull
- 9:45out every month or so I keep a record
- 9:49it's like a dictionary for
- 9:52me of all things that have caught my
- 9:57eye Judy what was the hardest handmade
- 10:00order you've ever
- 10:04made Mark Jacobs asked me to do
- 10:07something for Louis Vuitton which of
- 10:09course I was thrilled
- 10:12about so I went over to Paris and they
- 10:15had this really dodgy kind of denim that
- 10:18they wanted me to customize so I came
- 10:22out with this idea of like putting lace
- 10:25and buttons on one lot and then like
- 10:27silver and chains on on another lot and
- 10:30we were only going to do like 20 pieces
- 10:33or something for the stores but then in
- 10:37the end it kept on creeping
- 10:40up and we had to make hundreds of
- 10:48pieces it wasn't a nightmare working for
- 10:51luiton it was great in fact so nightmare
- 10:54job
- 10:55um oh it's got to be some pop star I
- 10:58didn't want to do in the first
- 11:03place shame I can't tell you the Jerry H
- 11:06will story cuz I signed a
- 11:09confidentiality
- 11:13Clos someone wants to know why you look
- 11:15so Brown have you been
- 11:17away no it's these pills I'm on for my
- 11:21uh cuz I've being ill they give me these
- 11:27my blood C ulation pills I'm sure it's
- 11:31that and I can't really do makeup cuz if
- 11:34I put makeup on it tends to end up on
- 11:37everyone else's face and not
- 11:39mine so people get really annoyed with
- 11:43you when my mother used to get dressed
- 11:45in the
- 11:4760s and when I was really quite young
- 11:50like
- 11:51from
- 11:54four all through we lived in Spain till
- 11:58about 11
- 12:01I always used to comment on her
- 12:04clothes and go oh no mother not that
- 12:08nail varnish with those shoes and then
- 12:12we lived in Spain in the' 60s and I
- 12:15remember my
- 12:17cousin she looked like um Lyn Redgrave
- 12:20in georg's
- 12:22girl that 60s film and she arrived in
- 12:26Spain
- 12:28the uh uh she came on holiday to Spain
- 12:31when we were living there and she wore a
- 12:33mini skirt like in 66 or something
- 12:3967 and it just caused a riot in Spain
- 12:43because it was quite you know still
- 12:46under General Franco and very Catholic
- 12:49and and she just kind of plumpish kind
- 12:53of English girl stomping through the
- 12:56Spanish village where we lived in a
- 12:58minis scope it just caused a riot and I
- 13:01thought how
- 13:02fabulous that a piece of clothing could
- 13:05cause so much
- 13:14trouble I go with the flow and I still
- 13:17enjoy doing it I kind of enjoy waking up
- 13:21every day to either make something
- 13:25or I still enjoy it
- 13:30and with
- 13:32me I do go through ups and downs a bit
- 13:35with
- 13:37it but I've worked with some such great
- 13:40people so youve got to learn to be
- 13:42inspired by other people
- 13:47really I'm off to the Pearly King and
- 13:50Queen B
