- 0:00And the now impeached Kenyan deputy
- 0:03president was more explicit in saying
- 0:06that this was a government of shares.
- 0:08Kenya was no longer a motherland
- 0:11or a country to be protected but a
- 0:13private company where people have
- 0:15shares.
- 0:19You hear words such as
- 0:22Mount Kenya Murima.
- 0:27You hear words such as we in the Rift
- 0:30Valley Mutaro.
- 0:32That's what they say.
- 0:35You hear words such as we want power. We
- 0:38of the Lu community want power. For what
- 0:42we do not say we just want power.
- 0:47The people from coastal say Kenya also
- 0:50say we also want power.
- 0:53The people from western Kenya, the Mura
- 0:55nation also say we want power.
- 0:59One of our own must be a president. The
- 1:01people from Muka also say we want power.
- 1:17Nobody is talking about Kenya.
- 1:20Kenya is lonely because there are very
- 1:23few Kenyans in real terms.
- 1:27That is how the country was conceived.
- 1:30And that meant that positions of trust
- 1:34had to be divided as it were on the
- 1:38basis on who brought in better
- 1:41investment by dent of population. When
- 1:44you conceive your country in that way,
- 1:47you are not protecting your motherland.
- 1:49And we are the only country in the world
- 1:52who have elected two presidents formally
- 1:56inducted by the international criminal
- 1:58court in succession.
- 2:00We are the only country in the world.
- 2:02There is no other country in the world
- 2:03that has ever done that. President Huru
- 2:07Kinata was elected and served for two
- 2:10years and now we have President William
- 2:12R who was also an indict
- 2:16at the International Criminal Court.
- 2:19The cases were never decided on merit
- 2:22and and I think this is critical
- 2:26because nobody was punished.
- 2:29We created an environment where nobody
- 2:32in Kenya, no politician in Kenya
- 2:35believes that they can ever be punished
- 2:38for any crime.
- 2:40And once you make impunity the culture
- 2:43in any country
- 2:47then you endanger peace
- 2:52and that is why after that every
- 2:56successive election
- 2:59project Kenya is always threatened.
- 3:04We fear
- 3:07that the country
- 3:10will not remain one
- 3:13because we have lost faith in our
- 3:15institutions
- 3:19when we had elections in the year
- 3:242013.
- 3:27We had to cobble together our government
- 3:30in order to retain peace. We were
- 3:33postponing the problem rather than
- 3:35solving the problem.
- 3:38And that is what we have perfected the
- 3:40art of doing in Kenya. We don't resolve
- 3:42problems that threaten the the the
- 3:44nation. We postponed the problems
- 3:52when
- 3:55we held elections because we don't even
- 3:58believe the polit the political class in
- 4:01Kenya the politician class in Kenya
- 4:03believe that they can never lose
- 4:06elections. If you lose election they
- 4:08have been stolen.
- 4:11And we were once again one of the
- 4:14countries in the world where a losing
- 4:17candidate in our election saw himself as
- 4:21the president of the Republic of Kenya
- 4:23and was never punished.
- 4:26Yet that is an act of treason. There is
- 4:30no other place in the world where a
- 4:33declared losing candidate saw himself
- 4:36and then walked and joined government.
- 4:41In other parts of the world that
- 4:44individual would have been punished
- 4:47but he was not. Once again we were
- 4:51engaged in the politics of pacification
- 4:56and postponement of our problems.
- 5:01And when a country does that a country
- 5:04weakens after every election. And I dare
- 5:08say that the country called Kenya has
- 5:12been coming becoming weaker and weaker
- 5:15after every elections.
- 5:20After every election, we become weaker
- 5:23and weaker. And if you look at the
- 5:26history of Kenya
- 5:28and the history of our politics, you
- 5:31will discover
- 5:33that we have always been in a situation
- 5:37where every electoral circle threatens
- 5:42the very foundations of this country.
- 5:46When
- 5:48the first elections were held in 1963,
- 5:53there were only two major political
- 5:55parties at that time. The Kenya African
- 5:59National Union, CANU, and the Kenya
- 6:03African Democratic Union Kadu. And these
- 6:08political parties
- 6:11were formed fundamentally
- 6:14or characterized themselves
- 6:16fundamentally after the first elections
- 6:19as an assembly of ethnicities.
- 6:24Canu may have emerged initially as a
- 6:27nationalist party,
- 6:30but no sooner had it won elections in
- 6:341963
- 6:37and persuaded the leaders of Kadu to
- 6:40cross the floor in 1964,
- 6:44creating a de factor one party state.
- 6:48Then the country started organizing our
- 6:52politics around ethnicities
- 6:55and it has never changed.
- 6:58So that while one may argue that
- 7:01democracy
- 7:03ought to be founded on a competition of
- 7:06ideas.
- 7:08I dare say that the manner in which we
- 7:11have conducted politics in Kenya has
- 7:14never been on the basis of competition
- 7:18of ideas. It has been on the basis of
- 7:22which combination of ethnicities
- 7:26can win elections.
- 7:28The late president of Tanzania
- 7:32speaking in 1967
- 7:36said of Kenya that it was a man eat man
- 7:39society and he was right.
- 7:42And his argument at that time that while
- 7:46the idea of creating the postcolonial
- 7:50state was to deemphasize
- 7:54ethnicities.
- 7:55We started emphasizing ethnicities.
- 7:59And if anyone were to doubt this
- 8:01reality, no sooner had we graduated even
- 8:07into adolescence of our politics in
- 8:111966.
- 8:13The political environment in Kenya
- 8:16changed dramatically when the then vice
- 8:18president Oinga Odinga left Canu and
- 8:23formed the Kenya People's Union which
- 8:25very quickly became a Lu party
- 8:29leading up to the detention of its
- 8:32leaders and ultimately Kenya started and
- 8:37remained as a single party state until
- 8:411978.
- 8:438 when the founding president of Kenya
- 8:45Joe Kenyata died. When he did his
- 8:50longerving vice president took over the
- 8:53presidency and for a short period tried
- 8:56to create raproma by bringing in leaders
- 9:00of different ethnicities into the
- 9:02political arena. But even that attempt
- 9:06did not convert Kenya into a country
- 9:10where competition was on the basis of
- 9:13ideas because no sooner had OA
- 9:18and other players been brought into the
- 9:21political frey in 1979
- 9:25than they left. And in 1982,
- 9:28those of you who are old enough will
- 9:30remember on the first day of August,
- 9:32there was an attempted coup in Kenya.
- 9:36And when there was that attempted coup,
- 9:39Kenya changed its constitution and in
- 9:42introduced at section 2A which made
- 9:45Kenya the jury one party state, namely a
- 9:49one party state by law. And there are
- 9:53testimonies of how anybody who held
- 9:56contrary views were detained in
- 9:59accordance with the law in those days
- 10:02because detention without trial existed
- 10:05and was allowed by the law. And the laws
- 10:08of detention and sedition were used
- 10:11extravagantly during the Moy
- 10:13administration.
- 10:16And what then started happening a lot
- 10:20more clearly was the ethnicization
- 10:24of Kenyan politics.
- 10:28So that
- 10:31ethnicities
- 10:33and ethnicity was weaponized
- 10:37and that is the basis on which
- 10:41particularly the law society of Kenya
- 10:44and other professional bodies started
- 10:47agitating for the reintroduction of
- 10:51multi-arty politics which must also be
- 10:54understood in the context of the changes
- 10:56in the world because at that time the
- 10:59Soviet Union which was the pave of
- 11:02single party statethood and communism
- 11:05collapsed and when the Balin wall
- 11:07collapsed in 1989
- 11:10even here we were moving towards the
- 11:14reintroduction of multi-party politics
- 11:17and I remember senior council budenji
- 11:20and I were members of the council of the
- 11:22law society during that period in 1990
- 11:26leading up to 1992
- 11:30when we reintroduced multi-party
- 11:32politics and we had a political movement
- 11:35called forum for the restoration of
- 11:38democracy. But was democracy ever
- 11:40restored?
- 11:42We had agitations.
- 11:45We had political parties. But even the
- 11:48forum for the restoration of democracy
- 11:51within a short time mutated and it
- 11:54became Ford Kenya, Ford and Ford people
- 11:58once again on the basis of ethnicity.
- 12:03And the very first time that we begin to
- 12:05have ethnic clashes in Kenya in a
- 12:08prominent way is in the year 1992.
- 12:12We are Kenyans who are now telling each
- 12:15other those who are in central province
- 12:18in Rift Valley province they are coyo
- 12:20who are in rift valley province being
- 12:22told get out this is not your land and
- 12:25is important to mention these things by
- 12:28name because part of the problem that we
- 12:30also have in Kenya and many African
- 12:33countries pretense we don't call things
- 12:36by their name and when we do so we
- 12:40delude ourselves into believing that
- 12:43things are normal and yet they are not
- 12:46normal.
- 12:47The ethnic clashes repeated themselves
- 12:52in 1997.
- 12:54And when we started talking about the
- 12:58removal of section 2A, we thought that
- 13:01Kenya's problems would be solved through
- 13:04a new constitutional dispensation.
- 13:08and I served as the secretary of the
- 13:10Kenya Constitution Review Commission for
- 13:125 years. Between the year 2000 and the
- 13:15year 2005, we traversed every corner of
- 13:20this country. And one of the things the
- 13:22people talked about is that we wanted a
- 13:26new constitutional dispensation that
- 13:30would immunize the country from conflict
- 13:34and ethnic adversity.
- 13:37We walked around the country.
- 13:40We wrote reports.
- 13:42We discovered that the people did not
- 13:44want centralized power. They wanted
- 13:48power to be revolved.
- 13:50They wanted services to be revolved.
- 13:54They talked about exclusion and
- 13:56marginalization.
- 13:59And we thought that if we had a new
- 14:02constitutional dispensation that dealt
- 14:04with those issues, then the problems of
- 14:07Kenya would be resolved.
- 14:12I remember
- 14:15many times
- 14:17at the Bombers of Kenya where we
- 14:19congregated for 111 days
- 14:24discussing what then became the Bulmer's
- 14:27draft of the constitution.
- 14:31I remember many politicians,
- 14:34some of whom are now
- 14:37dead,
- 14:38some of whom are still alive and remain
- 14:42liars the way they were. Even when I sat
- 14:45with them,
- 14:47I remember some of them saying
- 14:50that we did not need a constitution. We
- 14:53only needed to remove Daniel Arab.
- 14:57And I remember when the bombers draft
- 15:00came,
- 15:03the document that we produced was
- 15:06subjected to mutilation in Khifi
- 15:10was subjected to a referendum in the
- 15:12year 2005 and it was rejected and I
- 15:16remember one politician whom I'll not
- 15:18name because he's dead now [snorts]
- 15:21saying that a country can never have a
- 15:24constitution unless there is bloodshed.
- 15:26head
- 15:30and as if and I'm using the word gods
- 15:34very deliberately not to be her
- 15:37heretical
- 15:38and as if the gods had us.
- 15:44We had the first elections in 200
- 15:50and two multi-arty election. Then we had
- 15:53elections in 2007.
- 15:57We nearly went to civil war,
- 16:02post election violence.
- 16:05And is after the post-election violence
- 16:07that we had a new constitution when
- 16:10there is there was a coffan
- 16:13mediated settlement and the constitution
- 16:16became one of the things that we had to
- 16:20come up with as the long-term solution
- 16:24to the problem that we had heard.
- 16:28So we thought that a new constitution in
- 16:32and of itself
- 16:35would solve the problems
- 16:37after the post election violence.
- 16:43We did not trust our institutions
- 16:51and the people who are alleged to have
- 16:54been in the forefront
- 16:58of causing the ethnic
- 17:02conflicts
- 17:04after the Wacki report
- 17:06were then taken
- 17:09to the H. And I remember
- 17:13some of them saying don't be vague, let
- 17:16it be h because they thought that at the
- 17:20H nothing would happen to them and
- 17:23indeed nothing happened.
- 17:28[clears throat and cough]
- 17:29The net effect is that all the cases
- 17:31collapsed and
- 17:34[clears throat]
- 17:35we then had the constitution and
- 17:38devolved into 47 units.
- 17:43And if you look at the 47 units, the the
- 17:46philosophy behind evolution, you cannot
- 17:48fault it is the right thing. But if you
- 17:51talk to any one of these governors, many
- 17:54of them they think they are presidents
- 17:56of little units.
- 18:00I'm talking about preparing for peace as
- 18:04we approach the year 2027.
- 18:09So what has happened?
- 18:13We have had commissions
- 18:17which have identified the problems after
- 18:19we had the new constitutional
- 18:21dispensation. We said in order to create
- 18:25cohesion we need a national commission
- 18:28for cohesion. Are we cohesive? [snorts]
- 18:33We needed Kenya commission on human
- 18:36rights. Do we have human rights?
- 18:40We had the ethics and anti-corruption
- 18:43commission which I headed before it
- 18:46became ethics and anti-corruption
- 18:48commission. Have we reduced corruption
- 18:52or we still have corruption on an
- 18:54industrial scale?
- 18:59So as we talk about peace and as we talk
- 19:02about our preparedness
- 19:07for peace
- 19:10before the elections,
- 19:12many efforts have been made. the
- 19:14faith-based organization the Catholic
- 19:17Church has been in the forefront
- 19:20all through whether it was through the
- 19:22UFA Mano initiative
- 19:25through issuing pastoral letters
- 19:29the national NCCK
- 19:32soup
- 19:35from a purely ecumenical standpoint
- 19:38attempts have been made to immunize the
- 19:42country called Kenya from the dangers
- 19:45that are
- 19:48extent as we pro approach elections.
- 19:56When we had the last elections in the
- 19:59year 2022,
- 20:03it was not a competition of ideas.
- 20:07It was a competition of ethnicities.
- 20:10The motherland is to be protected.
- 20:15The other arrangement
- 20:17or the other ethnicities
- 20:20were now saying we are outside of the
- 20:23equation.
- 20:25And is only when the youngsters
- 20:27demonstrated in the year 2024 when the
- 20:30other ethnicities now joined government
- 20:33in what is called broadbased government.
- 20:37Some call it breadbased.
- 20:41Bread being a euphemism that when you
- 20:45join that government, you now have
- 20:48ministerial positions and other
- 20:51positions. And you've heard certain
- 20:53ethnicities say now we are in government
- 20:57because our sons and daughters now have
- 21:00ministerial positions
- 21:05and Kenyans are now saying we must be in
- 21:08government. every ethnicity say we must
- 21:10be in government calling into question
- 21:12what then is the basis of multi-party
- 21:15politics because multi-party politics
- 21:18presumes
- 21:20that during a particular period one
- 21:22political party with an agenda for Kenya
- 21:25will serve government and there will be
- 21:28some in opposition to keep that
- 21:30government on check for project Kenya
- 21:33but everybody wants to be in government
- 21:34because in a typical Kenyan scenario
- 21:38The government is a hunting ground where
- 21:41you go and hunt and take home things.
- 21:49I'm saying all these because they
- 21:52threaten peace and security.
- 21:57Today
- 21:59we have no less
- 22:02than 68
- 22:05political parties in Kenya and they are
- 22:07mutating by the day.
- 22:11People who are serving in government
- 22:14already are leaders of different
- 22:16political parties
- 22:20only in Kenya. In other parts of the
- 22:23world, when you abandon the party that
- 22:25took you to power, you resign and seek a
- 22:28fresh mandate. But not in Kenya.
- 22:33The country is now divided
- 22:37along ethnic lines because there are
- 22:39very few Kenyans in real terms.
- 22:43Does that threaten peace and the
- 22:45well-being of Project Kenya? Yes, it
- 22:47does.
- 22:50The situation we have now created in
- 22:52Kenya
- 22:56is that there are individuals in Kenyan
- 22:59politics whom you cannot arrest.
- 23:05If you arrest them, their communities
- 23:07will rise up
- 23:09to protect them.
- 23:12We have heitenized Kenya.
- 23:16Hayitinization
- 23:17is a situation that grew from the island
- 23:22of Hayiti
- 23:24during the period of the presidency of
- 23:27France Duualier normally referred to as
- 23:31Papa Doc and his son Jac Duvalier baby
- 23:36Doc.
- 23:38They both created
- 23:40an army called Don Makut.
- 23:45SO THAT IF YOU DISAGREED WITH them from
- 23:48a political ground, you would be
- 23:49eliminated.
- 23:52And it did not stop there with France
- 23:54Duvalier. He also engaged in voodoo.
- 23:59Today in Kenya, we have something called
- 24:02goons and goonism.
- 24:05And there are two categories of goons.
- 24:09They are the panga machete wielding
- 24:11goons. That is at the lower level.
- 24:16At the higher level, I'm told now they
- 24:18are intellectual goons who are to be
- 24:22found in social media. They are the
- 24:24keyboard warriors.
- 24:27They can do and create anything and
- 24:30attack you in the social media in favor
- 24:35of their preferred candidate.
- 24:39And in the last few months,
- 24:42we have seen
- 24:45political formations mutating
- 24:48and holding political rallies around the
- 24:51country. And there is not a single
- 24:53political rally where there has been no
- 24:55death
- 24:57or destruction of property and nobody
- 25:00has been arrested nor charged.
- 25:04Nobody.
- 25:09We have seen
- 25:11those goons
- 25:14invade churches
- 25:17and their images being caught on CCTV
- 25:23and none is arrested nor punished.
- 25:28That is called impunity.
- 25:32That is when the law no longer applies
- 25:38and nobody is punished.
- 25:43The Archbishop of the Anglican Church
- 25:46said when the All Saints Cathedral was
- 25:48attacked that the Inspector General of
- 25:50Police of Kenya must resign
- 25:55if the goons who attack that church,
- 26:00who are not arrested nor persecuted. The
- 26:02goons have not been arrested.
- 26:05The goons have not been charged. The
- 26:07Inspector General of Police has not
- 26:09resigned.
- 26:14We have heard newspaper headlines
- 26:19showing
- 26:21members of parliament
- 26:25as having been in the forefront of
- 26:28organizing
- 26:30activities that threaten peace.
- 26:34The National Commission for Cohesion
- 26:37summoned individuals
- 26:40to appear before them.
- 26:44One of them
- 26:46said he was too busy.
- 26:49He will appear one day or they go to
- 26:52him.
- 26:54In other parts of the world, when
- 26:57agencies of the law call you, you
- 27:00abandon everything else and appear
- 27:02before them.
- 27:04Not in Kenya.
- 27:07In Kenya, we have now law for the
- 27:10ordinary people and law for the
- 27:12political class.
- 27:16I'm telling you all these that you may
- 27:19know that before you prescribe medicine,
- 27:24you must have a proper diagnosis.
- 27:28investing in peace ahead of the 2027
- 27:34elections and even thereafter. That is
- 27:38my diagnosis.
- 27:41We now have a Kenya
- 27:45where the moral anchors have been
- 27:48uprooted.
- 27:50We now have a Kenya
- 27:54where the political class
- 27:57have divided us
- 28:00along ethnic lines.
- 28:03We now have a Kenya
- 28:06where political leaders from different
- 28:09ethnicities
- 28:11have become low voltage warlords. And
- 28:14I'm using the word low voltage for only
- 28:17one reason that their followers don't
- 28:21have guns.
- 28:24If the goons were to acquire guns,
- 28:27imagine for one moment
- 28:33what would be the difference between
- 28:35those goons and the militias in the
- 28:37Democratic Republic of Congo.
- 28:41Imagine if that [clears throat] were to
- 28:43happen.
- 28:46We now live in a country where our
- 28:50ethnic warlords can do no wrong.
- 28:54That is the situation. In other words,
- 28:57we have created an environment, a toxic
- 29:00environment that is a breeding ground
- 29:05for violence.
- 29:09The question is
- 29:13how do we prepare
- 29:15that we may have peace?
- 29:18We now see political formations
- 29:25and at one time
- 29:29I had a senior politician saying that
- 29:31going into the election this is how
- 29:33Kenyans are going to organize
- 29:35themselves. Banttos and nylots.
- 29:40We read them on newspaper headlines
- 29:44and we think it is a joke.
- 29:47When a country begins to say that they
- 29:50will organize themselves into formations
- 29:53of banttos
- 29:55and notss, it is no longer about how
- 29:58Kenya's health sector will be dealt
- 30:01with. It is no longer about how
- 30:04education will be dealt with. It is no
- 30:06longer about infrastructure. It is no
- 30:09longer about agriculture. It is about
- 30:12which combination will have more votes
- 30:15that they may dominate others.
- 30:20And when your agenda is domination
- 30:23without more, that is a powder keg. That
- 30:26is when you bring in war.
- 30:30And if you ever doubted me,
- 30:34this kind of arguments that I now see in
- 30:38Kenya existed in Sudan.
- 30:43Before Sudan became what it is now, the
- 30:46largest humanitarian situation in the
- 30:49world today with over 2 million refugees
- 30:52in Chad and in Egypt and in Ethiopia and
- 30:57in South Sudan distributed accordingly
- 31:00BECAUSE OF THE STUPIDITY OF the
- 31:02political class.
- 31:05And you and me remain silent
- 31:11in times such as this. To be silent is
- 31:15to be complicit.
- 31:18And that is why it gladdens my heart
- 31:21that the juic
- 31:24have decided to bring this conversation
- 31:28to the top so that the political class
- 31:30may begin to ask themselves fundamental
- 31:33questions as we prepare towards the
- 31:36election. What will be the situation on
- 31:38the 11th day of August the year 2027
- 31:43when results will be announced and
- 31:46SOMEBODY WILL BE DECLARED THE WINNER AND
- 31:48somebody will say we cannot lose
- 31:50elections. We are not going to accept
- 31:52the results.
- 31:55We already hear people saying if you
- 31:57VOTE FOR THIS PERSON WE ARE GOING TO
- 32:00HUNT YOU down to your house
- 32:04and deal with you. We already hear some
- 32:08saying IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR this
- 32:12if you are NOT AN ABORIGIAN of this land
- 32:16collect your things and go. We saw it.
- 32:20So that today if you belong to the wrong
- 32:23tribe and you are in the wrong place,
- 32:25you begin to move your assets and to
- 32:28move your children.
- 32:30How many of us will forget that this is
- 32:33the country where WE SAW PEOPLE WHO
- 32:36SOUGHT REFUGE IN A CHURCH BEING burnt
- 32:38down
- 32:40and nobody was punished for it.
- 32:44Our
- 32:46cup of iniquity as a nation is getting
- 32:49full
- 32:52and sometimes even the God that we
- 32:55worship can turn his head
- 32:58and will no longer listen.
- 33:03The question is what can we do beyond
- 33:06the lamentation?
- 33:09This is what we must do. We must begin
- 33:11to raise our voices at every corner,
- 33:16begin to interrogate what is being said.
- 33:21You know,
- 33:24sometimes
- 33:26I listen to vernaculars, the so-called
- 33:29vernacular stations,
- 33:33whether is ino FM
- 33:36or a Morgi FM or a Ga FM
- 33:41or Mus FM. If you LISTEN TO THE CODED
- 33:46language
- 33:47that is being used
- 33:50and those of my friends from Rwanda will
- 33:54tell you it is the media that was being
- 33:57used
- 34:00in Rwanda. They were calling people
- 34:02cockroaches because those whom you want
- 34:04to destroy you dehumanize first.
- 34:10In Kenya they are calling them madora
- 34:13dogs do dogs.
- 34:16You cannot The first thing is to
- 34:17dehumanize them so that they are not
- 34:19human beings. So that is easy to kill
- 34:21them.
- 34:23So that you can turn against your
- 34:25neighbor.
- 34:27We must change our language.
- 34:30We must now go out and regulate what is
- 34:34being said in these media
- 34:39which are broadcasting in local
- 34:42languages. What are they saying? Are
- 34:43they saying things that unite Kenya or
- 34:48things that divide Kenya?
- 34:52We must now go beyond Hekima here and
- 34:56begin to cascade this message into our
- 34:59schools
- 35:02into our markets.
- 35:05We have numei the 10 houses. This is the
- 35:09time to activate them
- 35:14so that we begin talking about who is
- 35:17your neighbor. We who are of those of
- 35:20you who are of the Christian faith and
- 35:22even Muslims who is your neighbor
- 35:27in the story of the good Samaritan Jesus
- 35:29doesn't say your neighbor is the one who
- 35:31lives next to you he gives a story there
- 35:34was a man walking between the road from
- 35:37Jerusalem to Jericho
- 35:40we must teach this
- 35:43in churches in places of worship we must
- 35:46now begin to address the political class
- 35:50cuz nations have been destroyed by
- 35:53politicians
- 35:55cuz fellow Kenyans don't ever imagine
- 36:00that you cannot be refugees if you joke
- 36:03around
- 36:06with peace.
- 36:09We have been hosting refugees from
- 36:11different parts of this region.
- 36:16Do we ever imagine
- 36:19that because of the political stupidity
- 36:21of the moment
- 36:24in the month of August and September
- 36:27you'll be abandoning your beautiful
- 36:29flats
- 36:32in Mombas
- 36:35in Kisumu in Elderate and living under
- 36:39tents
- 36:41supplied by the United Nations High
- 36:44Commission for Refugees. is queuing for
- 36:47food,
- 36:50your children not going to school
- 36:53because sometimes you've got to be
- 36:55scared in order to behave correctly.
- 36:58Even God uses the scare tactic. Hell and
- 37:01heaven.
- 37:08Some of you here, if there was no hell
- 37:10with the fire, you would just be
- 37:12misbehaving.
- 37:15But because you know that there is
- 37:17hellfire now you behave.
- 37:21So I'm painting painting this picture
- 37:24that you may know that if we don't
- 37:26preserve peace
- 37:29we can easily find ourselves in such a
- 37:33situation because as I said and the good
- 37:36doctor said peace is not just the
- 37:39absence
- 37:41of war.
- 37:44Is it not in the Christian church that
- 37:46we say the peace of God that surpasses
- 37:49all understanding?
- 37:51What is that peace? The peace that
- 37:54enables you to take out an insurance
- 37:57cover in the hope that you will have it
- 38:00mature. This peace that enables you to
- 38:02enroll your child in a kindergarten and
- 38:05plan for that child to go to the
- 38:07university. The peace that enables you
- 38:10to plant your crops in the hope that you
- 38:12will harvest it. It's not happening in
- 38:15Sudan now.
- 38:17It's not happening in Ambaz Amazonia and
- 38:19Cameroon now
- 38:21because they don't have peace.
- 38:24So what must we do
- 38:28to have peace in advance of the
- 38:31elections in 27 is not rocket science.
- 38:36We must morally rearm. I used to belong
- 38:39to an organization called moral
- 38:42rearmamentment.
- 38:44Doing the right thing because it's the
- 38:46right thing to do the right thing.
- 38:50Now this morning
- 38:53as I was coming to the office at 6,
- 39:00I observe a number of things nowadays.
- 39:04When you go into a country and you want
- 39:07to determine how that country is
- 39:09governed, look at how people drive
- 39:15and how people cross roads.
- 39:21And when you see at how we drive in
- 39:24Kenya, it tells you there is a problem.
- 39:27People no longer obey traffic rules and
- 39:30they know they are doing the right
- 39:32thing. And when you are driving, they
- 39:34don't look at you because they don't
- 39:36want eye contact.
- 39:39When I go to Rwanda to their credit,
- 39:42you go and see order. They have border
- 39:46borders, they'll only carry one person
- 39:48with complete with a helmet. When the
- 39:50lights are green, they go. When they are
- 39:52red, they stop. In Kenya, when they are
- 39:55red, the policeman tells you to go. And
- 39:58when they are green, they tell you to
- 40:00stop. So within a short time you are
- 40:02confused
- 40:04what should happen.
- 40:10So I'm [clears throat] suggesting
- 40:12that we must use all institutions
- 40:16the church
- 40:18to mean us. Many times as I now want to
- 40:21conclude many times when we talk about
- 40:23the church in Africa we think the church
- 40:27are the clutch. No, the church is the
- 40:30clergy and the lady.
- 40:34What are we doing?
- 40:36What are we doing? Wherever you are, you
- 40:39must be a warrior
- 40:41for that which is good and right.
- 40:44There is a letter which I have
- 40:49in my office
- 40:52on my board.
- 40:54It is a letter that is dated.
- 40:58I think the third day of July, I may be
- 41:01wrong about the day, but I'm certain
- 41:03that it was 1939.
- 41:05Is a letter written by Mahatma Gandhi to
- 41:08Adolf Hitler. And this is what it says
- 41:11in summary.
- 41:14I'm sorry to have to write to you, but
- 41:17my friends have told me that I should
- 41:20write to you and I have accepted to
- 41:23write to you because today in the world,
- 41:26you are the one person who is capable of
- 41:29stopping a war that could consume the
- 41:31entire humanity.
- 41:34On my part, I've always chosen the path
- 41:37of nonviolence because I believe that
- 41:40when you use violence, you do not do
- 41:44what is right because an eye for an eye
- 41:47only makes the world blind. I'm sorry to
- 41:51have written to you, but I urge you to
- 41:53embrace peace. It is a short letter.
- 41:56Within 3 months, Hitler invaded Poland.
- 42:00But when the Mahatma was interviewed
- 42:03again in 1945
- 42:06after the war when he was a prisoner at
- 42:08the Aakhan Palace in New Delhi, he said,
- 42:11"What did you do in an attempt to stop
- 42:13the war?" He said, "I wrote a letter to
- 42:15Adolf Hitler." That is the only
- 42:18contribution that I could make.
- 42:20Sometimes
- 42:22it is only your voice that you can use
- 42:26that history may record that you tried.
- 42:31Another story too that I'll tell you
- 42:36is an interview between Ali Mazur Rui
- 42:40and a journalist from the New York Times
- 42:44in the height of appetite. He was asked
- 42:48what do you do in order to fight this
- 42:51appetite which it appears we cannot
- 42:53defeat. He said I've decided to do thing
- 42:56two things as an academic right against
- 42:59it but I'm also not buying apples from
- 43:02South Africa. That is my contribution.
- 43:08What is your contribution in project
- 43:10Kenya and in project Africa in an
- 43:13attempt to immunize
- 43:16it against
- 43:20war? The last letter
- 43:24is a letter written in 1961
- 43:28by Patrice Emory Lumumba to his wife
- 43:31Josephine Opango. He's in jail
- 43:35and this is what he says in part. It is
- 43:39now clear to me that I shall not leave
- 43:42here alive.
- 43:44But my joy
- 43:47is that one day we shall conquer the
- 43:50violence that now envelops Congo
- 43:56and that my children and children's
- 43:58children will be in a position to write
- 44:01the history of their country. There will
- 44:04be problems but the decision will have
- 44:07been made. As for me, I've made the
- 44:09final sacrifice.
- 44:12He was only 36.
- 44:16He was then killed and his body
- 44:19dissolved in acid. It is only recently
- 44:23that they returned a part of his teeth
- 44:26which remained. I'm asking you
- 44:30beyond complaining
- 44:32for the younger ones, beyond Tik Tok
- 44:37and Instagraming
- 44:40and Facebooking.
- 44:43What are you doing? Do you have the
- 44:45courage
- 44:47to stand up
- 44:51against these politicians?
- 44:54You must have the courage.
- 44:57On the fourth day of September,
- 45:00the president of the Republic of Kenya
- 45:03made a statement about Burundi.
- 45:08He didn't talk about Burundi. He talked
- 45:10about foreigners.
- 45:13And immediately when I saw the
- 45:15statement, I issued a statement
- 45:18that the president of the Republic of
- 45:19Kenya must be called out
- 45:22because his statement
- 45:25can lead to a situation that is
- 45:27reminiscent of the afrophobia in South
- 45:29Africa. And as if I was a Jewish prophet
- 45:33without the gift,
- 45:36on Monday the 7th day of September, what
- 45:39I feared started happening and we saw
- 45:42people flocking in the embassy of
- 45:45Burundi. I felt vindicated
- 45:48because I had stood up and made my
- 45:51position known. The consequences
- 45:53notwstanding.
- 45:55Sometimes in pursuit of peace and that
- 45:58which is good and right, you must be
- 46:01prepared to
- 46:04stick your neck out. In the process, it
- 46:07may be crushed.
- 46:09But as the saying goes, cowards die many
- 46:12times
- 46:14and others die only once.
- 46:18And there is a saying which mean which
- 46:21is
- 46:26We must fight for peace.
- 46:30I hope that all of you here are
- 46:33Christians.
- 46:35And if you are Christians,
- 46:38this is the time to pray and pray in
- 46:40earnest. But beyond prayer, wherever you
- 46:44are, in your little village, in your
- 46:47little neighborhood, talk peace.
- 46:56In 1959,
- 46:59a great South African called Robert
- 47:01Mangaliso Subukqu was asked in the midst
- 47:05of the struggle between whites and
- 47:07blacks. Says, "What is your view about
- 47:10this racial discrimination in South
- 47:13Africa?" He said, "There is only one
- 47:15race, the human race.
- 47:19There is only one Kenya. with different
- 47:23ethnicities. The God we worship is a God
- 47:26of diversity. Let us speak peace
- 47:30because peace must be protected at all
- 47:33times.
- 47:35It can be done and the church has the
- 47:39moral high ground to repeat it and to do
- 47:42it right.
- 47:44Do what you can because if you lose and
- 47:48if we lose this country, putting it
- 47:51together will take generations. That is
- 47:54what history teaches us. We have a duty
- 47:57to protect Project Kenya. God bless you.
