1. 0:00i'd like to bring in sheriff and coroner
2. 0:01of shasta county california michael
3. 0:03johnson who has been working on this
4. 0:06case uh sheriff thank you for being here
5. 0:08i just first want to get your quick
6. 0:10reaction are you surprised that sherry
7. 0:12papini was granted bail
8. 0:15uh well i don't know if i'm surprised
9. 0:17that's uh you know that that's not a
10. 0:19determination of ours anymore where
11. 0:21um
12. 0:22the court heard
13. 0:24the testimony and the
14. 0:26uh considered all the factors so
15. 0:28uh maybe a little bit but
16. 0:30in today's day and age not not really as
17. 0:32long as
18. 0:33she's held the answer that's our really
19. 0:35our primary focus now you say you were
20. 0:37suspicious of this case early on what
21. 0:40was it that first made you think
22. 0:42something's not right
23. 0:44so the um there's really three stages to
24. 0:47this investigation and the first was uh
25. 0:50when she went missing yeah uh the first
26. 0:52launch was all the resources to try to
27. 0:54find her locate her as a missing person
28. 0:56second uh phase we went into was um when
29. 1:00as suspects were developed and we got
30. 1:02the sketches was trying to identify who
31. 1:04was responsible and then it was in the
32. 1:06third phase that really the suspicion
33. 1:08began the
34. 1:10sherry papini reappears we have
35. 1:13all the evidence involved with her to
36. 1:15process we have statements we have
37. 1:17interviews we have a lot of
38. 1:19facts to vet out and as we started doing
39. 1:22that portion of the investigation
40. 1:25that's when a lot of suspicion came to
41. 1:28light
42. 1:29and so
43. 1:31how much can you expand on that what was
44. 1:33it that raised that suspicion
45. 1:36yeah um you know what i i really can't
46. 1:38expand too much on that because those
47. 1:39are details of the investigation that
48. 1:41are going to be heard in the court
49. 1:42hearing and our federal partners are the
50. 1:45ones who are taking the lead on this and
51. 1:46now um
52. 1:48carrying the case through so in in order
53. 1:51to maintain the integrity of the
54. 1:52investigation i really can't get into
55. 1:54the details of that i can tell you this
56. 1:56so
57. 1:56just for clarification i was not at this
58. 1:59agency when this
59. 2:01whole case developed i was a chief at
60. 2:04the neighboring agency in south county
61. 2:06here and it impacted our whole community
62. 2:09not just
63. 2:10the shasta county sheriff's office not
64. 2:12just the the micro redding community but
65. 2:15the shasta community in totality it
66. 2:18really changed the way
67. 2:20people felt and and and their safety and
68. 2:23their perception of what was going on
69. 2:25here now papini hasn't had to enter a
70. 2:27plea yet but police say that there's a
71. 2:29witness her ex-boyfriend who says this
72. 2:31whole thing was a hoax so how much do
73. 2:33you think that will impact the case
74. 2:36i think what you're going to see in the
75. 2:37case is a
76. 2:40overwhelming amount of evidence which
77. 2:42points to this being a
78. 2:45calculated deception by her and a a
79. 2:49farce to the public and a
80. 2:51complete waste of resources and time for
81. 2:54law enforcement and i don't i think as
82. 2:56you watch that trial unfold and you see
83. 2:58the evidence come forward and you hear
84. 3:00the testimonies it there they'll it'll
85. 3:03be proved without it beyond a reasonable
86. 3:05doubt for sure
87. 3:06and and sheriff we heard kaylee saying
88. 3:08that she
89. 3:09left jail went to her sister's house
90. 3:11it's not clear if she's going to return
91. 3:12to her husband and her kids so what do
92. 3:15we know about her husband's role in all
93. 3:18of this is he considered a suspect or a
94. 3:20victim
95. 3:22this is what i can tell you about that i
96. 3:24have
97. 3:25compassion for her husband for her kids
98. 3:28for her unsuspecting family
99. 3:30they were all left in the dark as well
100. 3:33and that is not
101. 3:36that is not really the scope of this
102. 3:37investigation it is looking to hold
103. 3:40a
104. 3:42narcissistic behaviors by a
105. 3:45mother who
106. 3:46seemingly was abducted and created a big
107. 3:50lie
108. 3:51and and misled everybody so
109. 3:53um
110. 3:54i want to make it clear that we're not
111. 3:56this is not
112. 3:57vindication we are not out to
113. 3:59carry a torch against
114. 4:01necessarily sherry papini but she did
115. 4:04commit crimes and she did waste a lot of
116. 4:08energy and she did
117. 4:09deceive a public in a nation and she has
118. 4:12to be held accountable for that now do
119. 4:14you think anyone else could face charges
120. 4:16in this case or could papini face
121. 4:17additional charges
122. 4:20yeah i actually do i i think there's a
123. 4:22real possibility that the grand jury can
124. 4:25issue indictments for other people it's
125. 4:28um she certainly didn't pull it off by
126. 4:30herself and there's other people
127. 4:32involved or are knowingly
128. 4:34um
129. 4:35harboring her and and
130. 4:37were part of her plan so
131. 4:39um it wouldn't surprise me if other
132. 4:41people were charged or there were other
133. 4:43charges added to it but i i don't
134. 4:46necessarily anticipate that
135. 4:49all right sheriff michael johnson we
