- 0:00I want to be more than a leader.
- 0:03I want to be an inspiration.
- 0:07Let's sit with that for a second. Let me
- 0:10say it one more time.
- 0:13I want to be more than a leader.
- 0:15I want to be an inspiration.
- 0:19Those
- 0:22words
- 0:25came out of somebody's mouth
- 0:29that
- 0:34has done things in her career
- 0:38that not many people
- 0:41have been able to do,
- 0:44would have thought of doing, would have
- 0:47tried to do.
- 0:51And
- 0:52more importantly,
- 0:54she just did it because it's who she is.
- 1:01Somebody who
- 1:03showed up every single day
- 1:07when she was going through a ton of just
- 1:10crazy things in her life. Like like
- 1:13literally
- 1:15a person who showed up day in and day
- 1:17out
- 1:19always
- 1:22for
- 1:24the reason of just being
- 1:26the best that she could be every single
- 1:28day because she had a family to take
- 1:29care of.
- 1:33The crazy thing about it is that
- 1:37her life was kind of chaotic. It was it
- 1:40was going crazy. It was all all over the
- 1:43place. And there were so many times that
- 1:45she wanted to give up, but she didn't.
- 1:50And there were so many times that she
- 1:51wanted to just sit there and cry and run
- 1:54away
- 1:56and do the things that most people would
- 1:58do in those tough situations.
- 2:04But she knew
- 2:06that she had to go do what she did
- 2:11every day
- 2:13because her family depended on her,
- 2:17her friends depended on her,
- 2:20her customers depended on her
- 2:23and her team.
- 2:25It took them a long time to actually
- 2:29grow into what she was all about.
- 2:34But they eventually came around.
- 2:38And when I talk about
- 2:42being an inspiration,
- 2:45that's who this person is. She really
- 2:48doesn't even know it because those were
- 2:50the words out of her mouth. I want to be
- 2:53more than a leader. I want to be an
- 2:54inspiration.
- 2:58Few
- 3:01years back, I hired this
- 3:04girl who came in with a lot of energy.
- 3:09This was like early on in my regional
- 3:10manager career. Very early, very very
- 3:12like two weeks in.
- 3:15And we're going to we're going to uh
- 3:21say that she was
- 3:23a um a ball of fire. We're going to say
- 3:25she was a ball of fire. She had more
- 3:27energy than I did at the time. I mean,
- 3:30she came in, hair was done up, she had
- 3:34full of energy, she was ready to rock
- 3:36and roll. She would have started that
- 3:37day,
- 3:39final letter.
- 3:43And the second that I knew her or I saw
- 3:46her, I met her, I knew that that Kelsey
- 3:50was going to be an all-star for us.
- 3:54and and I knew that she had the passion,
- 3:56the fire, the drive to do great things.
- 4:00Now, she was one of those, you know,
- 4:02interviews that came in and she was
- 4:06positive,
- 4:07selling herself,
- 4:09you know, trying to trying to, you know,
- 4:11impress
- 4:13me to to get a job. She never talked bad
- 4:16about the place she was at. She always
- 4:17talked about the good things that they
- 4:19did for her. She was just ready for
- 4:21something else. And boy would did she
- 4:25ever uh did she ever uh get what she
- 4:29asked for. She was she was ready for
- 4:31something else and she got it
- 4:35early on in her service advisor career
- 4:36with us.
- 4:38She didn't get along with a manager that
- 4:40she was working for. Moved her down to
- 4:42another teammate, another store manager,
- 4:45another store.
- 4:47And and they they they did great things
- 4:48together. They became best friends at
- 4:51that store.
- 4:52Um they also battled like you know
- 4:58business partners and
- 5:01the family that we are at work fight.
- 5:04There was a day that she actually came
- 5:06to me and said you know what I'm going
- 5:07to go do something else. I got to I I'm
- 5:09I'm putting in my notice.
- 5:12And I looked at I'm like you're crazy.
- 5:13What are you What are you talking about?
- 5:14Come on. We're here. We're family. I I
- 5:17got you.
- 5:20And that was tough.
- 5:24But like most of them do, she came back.
- 5:29And when she came back,
- 5:32she had a different look in her eye. She
- 5:34had she had the passion and the fire
- 5:37already inside of her, but but it was
- 5:38ready to come out. It was it was there.
- 5:40It was I'm going to do this. I'm going
- 5:42to dominate and I am going to show
- 5:44everybody what is up.
- 5:47And she did.
- 5:51She got through a lot of things in her
- 5:52personal life. She got through um some
- 5:56scenarios at at work, a lot of growing
- 5:58pains. When I mean growing pains, I mean
- 6:01things that
- 6:03most people, I'm telling you, couldn't
- 6:05handle. They couldn't come to work. They
- 6:09would call in.
- 6:11But she'd be there six days a week, open
- 6:13to close. And she's done that ever since
- 6:15I've known her. There are times that I
- 6:16have to tell her, "Stop coming to work
- 6:19on your day off." And she would say, "I
- 6:21got this, Rio. Don't worry about it."
- 6:28and and the one thing that really
- 6:32I think accelerated her
- 6:35her growth because when you're a leader
- 6:39and you want to be the best that you can
- 6:40be, when you want to make a difference
- 6:43in your store's lives and your
- 6:46community's lives and everything that
- 6:47you do as a leader, you have to do
- 6:50things differently. And she did.
- 6:57There was a lot of times that
- 6:59her regional managers and myself
- 7:02would just talk and talk and talk. The
- 7:05good, the bad, the ugly, and more.
- 7:09But the great thing about it was
- 7:11every one of those conversations that we
- 7:14had, she came out just that much better.
- 7:17Whether she knew it or not,
- 7:20I think most of the time she did, but I
- 7:22think a lot of the times she she she
- 7:25really didn't understand the impact that
- 7:28she was making just by taking that step,
- 7:30just by being who she was. And that is
- 7:33what kept her in the game.
- 7:38She followed the process that was
- 7:40taught. She believed in the process that
- 7:42was taught. She understood things like
- 7:45running halfp price oil change specials.
- 7:47I remember when ultimately I was not a
- 7:50regional and I went back to restore at
- 7:53one point and I told her, "It's good to
- 7:55see you. I haven't seen you in a while.
- 7:56How you doing?" And she's like, "You
- 7:59know what I'm doing? Killing it always.
- 8:00It's what I do. I just got a 93% on my
- 8:04inspection."
- 8:05All happy golucky.
- 8:09I looked her. I said, "I'll show you
- 8:10what a 93% looks like.
- 8:14That ended in a bad
- 8:17night
- 8:19for Kelsey.
- 8:21She ended up
- 8:24taking that to heart.
- 8:26She took it to heart. She she she was
- 8:27really upset for about a day
- 8:31and then she came back and then she
- 8:34said, "I'll show you what 93 looks like,
- 8:35Rio." And she turned it around and she
- 8:38made it happen. She made that shop look
- 8:40and act and and and and just there was a
- 8:44different feel the next time that I saw
- 8:45her a couple months later. The shop was
- 8:48in order, the team was in order. and
- 8:49that Kelsey, she she she
- 8:53inspired me at the time because
- 8:56everything that her and myself been
- 8:59through as as a team,
- 9:04all the hard times that we went through
- 9:05together, all the times that she
- 9:09punched back when I punched,
- 9:14it made her better and it made me better
- 9:18Because I had to slow down too. I had to
- 9:21slow down and think
- 9:24what was the next level for her.
- 9:30The 93% conversation got her fired up to
- 9:33a point that she started doing more
- 9:35things on her own, started reading some
- 9:36books, started started listening to some
- 9:38podcasts, started, you know, putting
- 9:40things up on her wall that inspired her
- 9:42that I sent her and kept them there. It
- 9:45was because she wanted to win and she
- 9:47knew the process worked because she was
- 9:49living the process. She was the
- 9:53product of the process and the product
- 9:55of herself believing in herself and that
- 9:57she was going to get better and fighting
- 9:59every single day. And that is what
- 10:02inspiration is about. And that's how
- 10:04leaders inspire
- 10:07others because eventually one of the
- 10:11things that she struggled with for a
- 10:12long time was was turnover. But but now
- 10:15her turnover is very low and her store
- 10:18is killing it
- 10:21and Kelsey's leading the way that she
- 10:23she has has uh
- 10:27has never led before that I always knew
- 10:30that she had it in her and she did and
- 10:31she's doing it.
- 10:36Her team believes in her. Her customers
- 10:39believe in her. And the thing is is
- 10:41she's built
- 10:44her business through grit, through fire,
- 10:48through passion, through heart, through
- 10:49crying, through every emotion that you
- 10:51can go through. She's built the business
- 10:53and she has built the respect and and
- 10:57and and and gained the respect of her
- 10:59team
- 11:02that now instead of working six days,
- 11:05she can walk away a little bit. she can
- 11:07go and enjoy her kids.
- 11:12That's what's worth it. And that's what
- 11:14inspires
- 11:16true leaders. That's what inspires the
- 11:19people like us that are on this message
- 11:22and on this call, whatever you want to
- 11:23call it right now. That's why we keep
- 11:26going because it's not about anything
- 11:27else other than that. It's seeing others
- 11:29win, seeing others succeed.
- 11:32And I just want to say
- 11:35that
- 11:37this was a hard
- 11:43episode for me to to to get to the
- 11:46camera because there's so many emotions
- 11:48behind it and I don't necessarily get
- 11:50emotional, but but she
- 12:00she is
- 12:02what
- 12:04it's all about.
- 12:06And and she is the reason that I do what
- 12:10I do.
- 12:12And she is the reason that is one of the
- 12:16reasons that I'm doing what I'm doing
- 12:18with the Ascend program. And and she is
- 12:22the inspiration that she wants to be.
- 12:28And my hope that you all feel what I
- 12:31feel right now about
- 12:35a woman who
- 12:37will not give up, will never give in,
- 12:41will not take no for an answer, and will
- 12:43never stop fighting until she gets what
- 12:45she wants. And that's going to be
- 12:48leaving
- 12:51at the top,
- 12:53walking away at some point in the future
- 12:57at the top
- 12:59so that she can give her family
- 13:06everything that she's always wanted and
- 13:07more. And that's the person who she is.
- 13:11And she was the inspiration for this.
- 13:14And I thank her for that. and thank her
- 13:15for everything she's always done.
- 13:17And
- 13:21I hope you all
- 13:23get a little taste of how Kelsey
- 13:27can really make a difference and really
- 13:32help you understand that it doesn't
- 13:36matter what you're going through. It
- 13:37doesn't matter your situation. It
- 13:39doesn't matter who you are, what you
- 13:41think, or what somebody's told you. It's
- 13:42about what you have inside and you go
- 13:45out and get it and you will win.
- 13:49I'm Ryan. She calls me Rybo.
- 13:53This was the Operator's Edge.
- 13:55We'll see you next time.
- 13:59Thank
