- 0:00What would you do if you suddenly
- 0:01learned that a boy who was bullied at
- 0:02school was no longer alive? Late at
- 0:04night, Yang Jihun sat quietly on a bus
- 0:07struggling to process the heartbreaking
- 0:08news that Kang Huju, the boy who had
- 0:10been bullied in Shuwari, had died. Just
- 0:12then, the bus conductor announced the
- 0:14stop for the funeral hall. Jihun got off
- 0:16and made her way inside where several
- 0:18people had gathered to mourn Uju. Some
- 0:20couldn't even hold back their tears as
- 0:22they grieved his death while Jihun
- 0:23stepped into the funeral hall with the
- 0:25heartbreaking news still on her mind. As
- 0:27Jihun observes the mourners, she
- 0:29reflects on how unfamiliar she is with
- 0:31death and funeral customs. Apart from
- 0:33her father, who passed away when she was
- 0:34just a baby, she has never experienced
- 0:36the death of someone close to her.
- 0:38Everything she knows about funeral
- 0:40etiquette comes from things she casually
- 0:41picked up from her mother over the
- 0:43years. Jihun was born in a hillside slum
- 0:45in Seoul and grew up in Shuwari, a
- 0:47mountain village in Wari. That place is
- 0:49her hometown where she spent most of her
- 0:51childhood. Jihun then recalls her
- 0:53mother's difficult past. Her mother
- 0:54always believed that her fate was cursed
- 0:56because she had lost her family in a
- 0:58series of bizarre accidents, leaving
- 1:00only her eldest sister behind. After
- 1:02eventually losing her husband as well,
- 1:04Jihun's mother was forced to endure life
- 1:05as a widow. Despite the hardships and
- 1:07the judgment she faced, she remained
- 1:09determined to move forward. She learned
- 1:11hairdressing and eventually began
- 1:13working at a beauty parlor determined to
- 1:15build a better life for herself and her
- 1:16daughter. Around the time Jihun's mother
- 1:18finally became accustomed to working at
- 1:20the beauty parlor, her eldest sister,
- 1:22who had married into a wealthy family in
- 1:23a lower region, returned to visit her
- 1:25childhood home. However, her visit was
- 1:27not a happy one. In a flashback, Jihun's
- 1:30aunt is shown crying as she confides in
- 1:32their mother explaining that she is
- 1:33exhausted from being beaten and can no
- 1:35longer tolerate her married life. She
- 1:37desperately wants a divorce and hopes to
- 1:38escape her suffering. However, Jihun's
- 1:40grandmother responds with anger rather
- 1:42than sympathy. She questions how an
- 1:44older divorced woman could possibly earn
- 1:45a living and support herself. She
- 1:47insists that everyone else endures their
- 1:49hardships and tells her daughter to do
- 1:50the same. According to her, things might
- 1:53eventually improve if her daughter
- 1:54simply continued to endure her
- 1:56circumstances. While this painful
- 1:57conversation unfolds, little Jihun is in
- 1:59her mother's arms crying. Her mother
- 2:02ignores the argument between her older
- 2:03sister and their mother before carrying
- 2:05Jiheon inside. After crying for a long
- 2:07time and listening to her mother's harsh
- 2:09words, Jiheon's aunt eventually gives up
- 2:11and returns empty-handed. She cuts ties
- 2:13with her family, leaving the painful
- 2:15incident behind. However, years later,
- 2:17around the time Jiheon has just turned
- 2:19seven, her aunt unexpectedly comes back
- 2:21into contact with them. News reaches
- 2:23their hometown that she has remarried a
- 2:24wealthy man. Upon hearing this, Jiheon's
- 2:26mother quits her job at the beauty
- 2:28parlor and decides to visit her older
- 2:30sister. Soon afterward, Jiheon and her
- 2:32mother move into a new house. Her mother
- 2:33proudly shows her their new home and
- 2:35waits to see her reaction. The house has
- 2:37a beautiful white gate that resembles a
- 2:38field covered in snow, six fermentation
- 2:41pots left behind by the previous owner,
- 2:43and a modest red roof. Although the
- 2:44house is not particularly extravagant,
- 2:46it represents a significant change in
- 2:48their lives. After spending years
- 2:50swallowing her sorrow and living in
- 2:51rented rooms, Jiheon's mother has
- 2:53finally secured a house under her own
- 2:54name. Not long after they settle in,
- 2:56Jiheon's aunt visits their new home. She
- 2:58gently places a hand on Jiheon's head
- 3:01and introduces herself as her aunt, but
- 3:02she makes it clear that Jiheon must
- 3:04never call her that in public. Instead,
- 3:06she tells the little girl to think of
- 3:08her as a neighborhood lady or one of her
- 3:10mother's friends. Her aunt then offers
- 3:12to give Jiheon some allowance, but
- 3:13Jiheon's mother immediately objects,
- 3:15explaining that her daughter is still a
- 3:16child. Despite the restrictions
- 3:18surrounding their relationship, it is
- 3:20clear that the aunt cares about Jiheon
- 3:22and her mother. Jiheon later discovers
- 3:23that a significant portion of the money
- 3:25used to purchase their new house had
- 3:26come from her aunt. Although her aunt
- 3:28lives under constant scrutiny in her
- 3:29married life, she still cannot bring
- 3:31herself to ignore the sister who came
- 3:33looking for her. Her husband, meanwhile,
- 3:35believes that she has completely cut
- 3:36ties with her family. Despite this, she
- 3:38secretly continues to help her sister.
- 3:40Around the time Jiheon graduates from
- 3:42elementary school, she also learns that
- 3:44her aunt had lent her mother the money
- 3:45needed to purchase both the house and
- 3:47the beauty salon. Having grown up
- 3:48surrounded by the complicated
- 3:49circumstances of adults, Jiheon
- 3:51gradually learns how difficult life can
- 3:53be. Living in Chuwari is not easy, but
- 3:55she does not allow those hardships to
- 3:57trouble her too much. Her greatest goal
- 3:59is to make her mother happy and secure
- 4:01happiness for herself and everyone she
- 4:03loves. She dreams of attending college
- 4:05in Seoul, finding a good job, and
- 4:07eventually retiring to open a flower
- 4:08shop filled with the beautiful scent of
- 4:10roses. With support from her not quite
- 4:12aunt and constant encouragement from her
- 4:14mother, Jiheon grows up surrounded by
- 4:16the love, resentment, and tears of two
- 4:18women. Throughout those years, she
- 4:19continues singing songs about flowers
- 4:21until she turns 17. The story then
- 4:23returns to the present where Jiheon
- 4:25stands inside Kang Yu-jo's funeral hall.
- 4:27Yu-jo has died at only 19 years old and
- 4:30his photograph reminds her of the boy
- 4:31she once knew. Looking at his picture,
- 4:33she realizes that everything she
- 4:35believed before he moved in next door
- 4:37had once seemed unquestionably true.
- 4:39However, there is something she deeply
- 4:40regrets not telling him while he was
- 4:42alive. She wishes she had told him that
- 4:44she considered him a friend, that she
- 4:45was never ashamed of him, and that she
- 4:47never pitied him. These were the words
- 4:48Yu-jo deserved to hear, yet she never
- 4:50managed to say them. As Jiheon continues
- 4:52staring at Yu-jo's photograph, the
- 4:54thought of how lonely his final moments
- 4:56must have been becomes unbearable.
- 4:57Standing in the funeral hall grows
- 4:59increasingly painful and she silently
- 5:01calls him an idiot. Just then, she
- 5:03notices a young man sitting nearby
- 5:05eating and drinking as though he has
- 5:06withdrawn into his own world. The man
- 5:08asks whether she has come to pay her
- 5:09respects, leaving Jiheon startled by his
- 5:11presence. His appearance and the
- 5:13situation make her remember a
- 5:14conversation she once had with Yu-jo
- 5:16beside a river. Back then, Yu-jo had
- 5:18been sitting beside Jiheon looking
- 5:20particularly sad as he opened up about
- 5:22his family. He revealed that he actually
- 5:24had an older brother who was one year
- 5:25older than him. His mother had run away
- 5:27when he was 10 and his father had
- 5:28abandoned him 3 years earlier. His
- 5:30brother had also left the previous year
- 5:32to find work. As a result, his brother
- 5:34was the only person who still found him
- 5:36places to live, sent him money, and
- 5:38occasionally called to check on him.
- 5:39Despite everything, his brother remained
- 5:41the only family member who continued
- 5:43looking after him. At the time, however,
- 5:44the neighbors frequently gossiped about
- 5:46Yu-jo's suspicious background. Even
- 5:48Jiheon, who verbally defended him and
- 5:50insisted that the rumors were untrue,
- 5:51had never completely believed everything
- 5:53he said. Now, standing at his funeral,
- 5:56she begins to understand how wrong she
- 5:57had been. Although her feelings of
- 5:59concern for Yu-jo had never been false,
- 6:01she realizes that there had never been
- 6:03any reason to doubt his words. The
- 6:05brother sitting before her is living
- 6:07proof of the family connection Uju had
- 6:08once described. Unlike the frail boy she
- 6:10remembers, who was constantly sick and
- 6:12coughing, Uju's older brother appears
- 6:14completely different. Returning to the
- 6:16present, Jihun looks at the young man
- 6:17and realizes that he must be Uju's older
- 6:19brother. When she addresses him, he says
- 6:21nothing and simply continues staring at
- 6:23her. After a moment, he reveals that Uju
- 6:25had kept waiting for her. Hearing those
- 6:27words, Jihun clenches her fists and
- 6:29struggles to hold back her tears. There
- 6:31are so many things she wants to explain,
- 6:33but she cannot bring herself to speak.
- 6:35She cannot tell him that Uju, who had
- 6:37always been physically frail, became
- 6:38seriously ill after some thugs from his
- 6:40school threw him into the water. She
- 6:42also cannot explain that Uju had been
- 6:43too weak to bear the thought of becoming
- 6:45a burden to his brother. In the end, Uju
- 6:47died alone on a cold street. To make
- 6:49matters worse, Jihun's mother and aunt
- 6:51had kept the news from reaching her,
- 6:53causing her to learn about his funeral
- 6:54too late. She had been that boy's only
- 6:56friend, yet she had not even been there
- 6:58when he needed someone the most. The
- 6:59realization finally overwhelms her and
- 7:01she bursts into tears. Through her she
- 7:04can only mumble that Uju had kept
- 7:05waiting for her. She cries like a little
- 7:07child while Uju's older brother remains
- 7:09seated in silence, offering no immediate
- 7:11response to her grief. As Jihun
- 7:13continues crying, her overwhelming
- 7:14resentment begins to turn toward the man
- 7:16sitting before her. She knows that he
- 7:17has also lost someone precious and she
- 7:20understands that he is grieving his
- 7:21younger brother. Nevertheless, she
- 7:23struggles to control her emotions. She
- 7:25feels that she should hate herself for
- 7:26lashing out at someone who has just lost
- 7:28his brother. Perhaps her reaction
- 7:30resembles the foolish kindness Uju
- 7:31himself had always shown toward others.
- 7:33Eventually, Jihun wipes away her tears
- 7:35and feels deeply embarrassed by the way
- 7:37she has behaved. Trying to move past the
- 7:39painful moment, Jihun takes out an
- 7:41envelope and shows it to Uju's older
- 7:42brother. She asks where she should
- 7:44deliver it, hoping to fulfill whatever
- 7:46responsibility has brought her there.
- 7:48Meanwhile, she imagines Uju watching
- 7:50everything from heaven, holding his
- 7:51stomach as he laughs at her and teases
- 7:53her for crying so desperately. Even in
- 7:55death, the thought of his familiar
- 7:56personality brings a mixture of sadness
- 7:58and affection to her heart. Just then,
- 8:00Uju's older brother addresses her by her
- 8:02full name, Yang Jihun. She is
- 8:04immediately shocked and and how he knows
- 8:06her name. Before she can understand the
- 8:07reason, the man offers her a meal and
- 8:10invites her to stay and eat with him.
- 8:11Ji-hon sat down to eat with Yu-Ju's
- 8:13older brother. As she looked at the food
- 8:14in front of her, she couldn't help
- 8:16thinking that she hadn't even gotten
- 8:17through the funeral yet. She wondered
- 8:19whether it was really okay for her to
- 8:20eat first. Meanwhile, Yu-Ju's older
- 8:22brother held his chopsticks in the worst
- 8:24possible way and struggled to eat.
- 8:25Although Ji-hon thought he was handsome,
- 8:27she couldn't understand how someone
- 8:29could be even worse at using chopsticks
- 8:30than a 5-year-old child. Noticing that
- 8:32Ji-hon wasn't eating, Yu-Ju's brother
- 8:34asked whether she was going to eat. He
- 8:36then decided to have her food as well
- 8:38and started eating it. Watching him eat
- 8:39so much, Ji-hon worried that he would
- 8:41give himself indigestion. Ji-hon then
- 8:43handed him a can of Coke. After opening
- 8:45it, he asked whether she had been close
- 8:46to Yu-Ju. Ji-hon confirmed that they had
- 8:48been close and explained that this was
- 8:50exactly why she had come to the funeral.
- 8:52He then asked about her school. Ji-hon
- 8:54explained that it was winter break, so
- 8:55she didn't have any classes. Hearing
- 8:57this, he smiled and remarked that she
- 8:59was lucky. Ji-hon couldn't understand
- 9:00what was so lucky about the situation.
- 9:02Wanting to tell him more about his
- 9:04younger brother, Ji-hon explained that
- 9:05Yu-Ju had mentioned many times how much
- 9:07he missed his older brother. He had even
- 9:09saved the side dishes she brought him,
- 9:11saying that he would eat them together
- 9:12with his brother when he finally came
- 9:13back. Looking at Yu-Ju's brother's
- 9:15expressionless face, Ji-hon thought that
- 9:17instead of sitting there without showing
- 9:18any emotion, he should at least shed a
- 9:20few tears for his younger brother.
- 9:22However, while sipping his Coke, he
- 9:24simply asked what kind of side dishes
- 9:25Yu-Ju had saved. Ji-hon was surprised by
- 9:27his question. He clarified that he was
- 9:29referring to the side dishes she had
- 9:31brought for Yu-Ju. She listed the
- 9:32stir-fried sausages, seasoned seaweed
- 9:34stems, and pickled cucumbers. Hearing
- 9:36this, he remarked that they must have
- 9:38been incredibly delicious. He then
- 9:39casually added that Yu-Ju had lived
- 9:41better than he had and that he was happy
- 9:43for him. Ji-hon was stunned by how
- 9:44casually he could say something like
- 9:46that. Meanwhile, Yu-Ju's brother
- 9:47continued trying to pick up food with
- 9:49his chopsticks, but the food kept
- 9:51falling before he could eat it. Watching
- 9:52him struggle, Ji-hon thought that if he
- 9:54couldn't use chopsticks properly, he
- 9:56should simply eat with a spoon instead.
- 9:58Unable to watch him struggle any longer,
- 9:59Ji-hon picked up some food with her own
- 10:01chopsticks and handed it to him. He
- 10:03thanked her and told her to leave
- 10:04because she had already finished eating
- 10:06anyway. He then brought up the question
- 10:08of why she hadn't come earlier,
- 10:09reminding her that he had asked her
- 10:10about it before. Instead of explaining
- 10:12himself, he asked whether her parents
- 10:14were still alive. Jihon was surprised
- 10:16that he was asking about her and
- 10:17wondered whether he meant her
- 10:18specifically. He confirmed that he did.
- 10:20Jihon then explained that her father
- 10:22wasn't around and that she only had her
- 10:24mother. Yujo's brother followed up by
- 10:25asking whether her mother treated her
- 10:27well. Jihon became confused and wondered
- 10:29why he was asking her such a personal
- 10:31question. He explained that he had been
- 10:32thinking about whether she could go
- 10:34home. If her mother didn't treat her
- 10:35well, she could stay there longer.
- 10:37However, if her mother cherished her and
- 10:39treated her like someone precious, she
- 10:41should return home. After all, it was
- 10:43already almost midnight. Just then, he
- 10:45took out his cigarette box. Jihon
- 10:46immediately stopped him and nervously
- 10:48reminded him that smoking wasn't allowed
- 10:49in the area. However, he acted as though
- 10:51he didn't understand what a non-smoking
- 10:53area meant. Jihon explained that it was
- 10:55a place where people weren't allowed to
- 10:56smoke. Instead of putting his cigarettes
- 10:58away, he smiled and addressed her as
- 11:00young Jihon. He asked her to lend him
- 11:01some money because he needed to buy
- 11:03cigarettes. Jihon remembered that he
- 11:04hadn't even accepted the condolence
- 11:06money, yet he was now asking her for
- 11:08money. He smiled again and added that it
- 11:09would be even better if she bought the
- 11:11cigarettes for him herself. Jihon
- 11:13protested that she was still a minor.
- 11:14However, Yu-tae wondered whether minors
- 11:16couldn't buy cigarettes, adding that he
- 11:18believed they could when he was her age.
- 11:20His response left Jihon completely
- 11:21shocked. She then politely asked whether
- 11:23she could know his name. Smiling, he
- 11:25introduced himself as Kang Yu-tae. Jihon
- 11:28repeated his name in her mind and
- 11:29concluded that Yu-tae's older brother
- 11:31seemed like a strange person in many
- 11:32ways. After leaving the funeral hall,
- 11:34Jihon noticed that Yu-tae was following
- 11:36her. She turned around and asked how far
- 11:38he intended to follow her. He wanted to
- 11:40know whether she was taking the bus, and
- 11:41Jihon was surprised that he was asking
- 11:43her. After he confirmed that he meant
- 11:45her, she explained that she was going to
- 11:47walk down to the town instead. Yu-tae
- 11:49was surprised by her answer. Jihon
- 11:50explained that she wanted to use a
- 11:52payphone downtown because her mother was
- 11:54going to pick her up there. Meanwhile,
- 11:55she reminded herself that she had to
- 11:57pretend she had been studying at the
- 11:58reading room. Yu-tae then asked where
- 12:00she had left her phone, but Jihon
- 12:02explained that she didn't have one. He
- 12:03simply stared at her in response. For
- 12:05the time being, Jihon decided that since
- 12:07she was a mourner, she should at least
- 12:09say goodbye properly. She bowed to
- 12:11Yu-tae, bid him farewell, and started
- 12:13walking away. As she walked, Jihun
- 12:15remembered the day she had unexpectedly
- 12:16run into Yuju by the river. When Yuju
- 12:18told her that he planned to catch
- 12:19freshwater snails to fill his empty
- 12:21stomach, she began bringing him side
- 12:23dishes from that day onward. However,
- 12:25her mother didn't know the truth. Jihun
- 12:26had repeatedly begged her for extra side
- 12:28dishes, using her growing years as an
- 12:30excuse to get more food. If her mother
- 12:32discovered that all those extra dishes
- 12:34had actually gone to Yuju, she would
- 12:35kick Jihun out of the house with nothing
- 12:37but the clothes on her back. Eventually,
- 12:39Yuju had started coming out to collect
- 12:41the food himself. Jihun didn't mind if
- 12:43anyone considered her actions
- 12:44unnecessary meddling. Unlike the other
- 12:46boys who would lift high school girls'
- 12:47skirts and giggle, Yuju had always been
- 12:49calm and intelligent. Those qualities
- 12:51were what made her like him. As she
- 12:53continued thinking about Yuju, Jihun
- 12:55remembered a conversation they had
- 12:56shared in the past. During that
- 12:57conversation, Yuju had told her about
- 12:59his dream. Jihun had asked whether that
- 13:01was really his dream, and he had smiled
- 13:03before confirming that it was. His dream
- 13:05was to live in the same house as his
- 13:07older brother. Back in the present,
- 13:08Jihun sat down on a bench while thinking
- 13:10about everything Yuju had told her. She
- 13:12couldn't stop thinking about how the
- 13:13very brother Yuju had dreamed of living
- 13:15with hadn't shed a single tear at his
- 13:17younger brother's funeral. Overwhelmed
- 13:19by these thoughts, tears began falling
- 13:21from her eyes. Just then, Euitae
- 13:23appeared and addressed her. Jihun was
- 13:24surprised to see him there and wondered
- 13:26why he had come back. Euitae explained
- 13:28that the answer should have been obvious
- 13:29because she was the only person there.
- 13:31Jihun then asked about Yuju's other
- 13:33friends and acquaintances, wondering why
- 13:35none of them had come. However, Euitae
- 13:37insisted that if there had been anyone
- 13:38else, they would have come. He repeated
- 13:40that she had been the only one there.
- 13:42Jihun then told him that if he had come
- 13:44back because of her, he could leave. In
- 13:46response, Euitae asked whether she
- 13:47really wanted him to leave her alone.
- 13:49Euitae then asked Jihun where she was
- 13:51going. Jihun explained that downtown was
- 13:53only a short distance away and assured
- 13:54him that he didn't need to worry about
- 13:56her. Hearing this, Euitae wondered
- 13:58whether she was simply naive or
- 13:59something else. He then tossed his phone
- 14:01toward her and told her to use it to
- 14:03call her mother and ask her to come and
- 14:04pick her up. Jihun agreed and used his
- 14:06phone to call her mother, explaining
- 14:08that she was calling from a borrowed
- 14:09phone. After finishing the call, Jihun
- 14:11and Euitae began walking together. As
- 14:13they walked, Jihun became curious about
- 14:15him and asked which high school he had
- 14:17attended and whether he had lived around
- 14:19the Wary area his entire life. However,
- 14:21Yuuta told her to look straight ahead
- 14:23and stop being so interested in him.
- 14:25Jihoon wondered why she couldn't ask him
- 14:26simple questions like that. She also
- 14:28pointed out that if he didn't want her
- 14:29asking questions, he should stop
- 14:31following her around. Yuuta remarked
- 14:33that she talked too much, but Jihoon
- 14:35disagreed. She explained that she was
- 14:37only asking because it felt
- 14:38uncomfortable having him follow her
- 14:39without saying a single word. Yuuta
- 14:41eventually revealed that he hadn't
- 14:43graduated from high school because he
- 14:44had dropped out. His unexpected answer
- 14:46caught Jihoon by surprise. Shortly
- 14:48afterward, they arrived at their
- 14:49destination and Jihoon informed him that
- 14:51they were there. Before leaving, Yuuta
- 14:53remarked that he could tell how she
- 14:55lived her life just by looking at the
- 14:56kinds of questions she asked. Jihoon was
- 14:58confused by his comment, but before she
- 15:00could respond properly, Yuuta walked
- 15:02away without another word. Jihoon
- 15:04watched him leave and thought about how
- 15:05Yuju's older brother had provided her
- 15:07with a free escort service before
- 15:08disappearing without even saying
- 15:10goodbye. She couldn't help concluding
- 15:11that Yuuta was a really strange person.
- 15:13Some time passed and Jihoon's life
- 15:15gradually became busy with college
- 15:17entrance exam preparation. She thought
- 15:19about how the town had forgotten Yuju as
- 15:21quickly as someone would forget a
- 15:22three-minute curry after eating it. Her
- 15:2419-year-old summer vacation had become
- 15:26occupied with studying for her entrance
- 15:27exams. Perhaps unable to bear watching
- 15:29her daughter cry until her pillow was
- 15:31soaked with tears, Jihoon's mother
- 15:32launched an intensive tutoring campaign.
- 15:34Unfortunately, the effect was minimal
- 15:36and Jihoon continued to struggle with
- 15:38her grief. On days when her mother
- 15:39happened to return home late from work,
- 15:41Jihoon would go and stand outside Yuju's
- 15:43house for no particular reason. The
- 15:45house had officially become the
- 15:46abandoned house of the neighborhood and
- 15:48it grew more gloomy and desolate with
- 15:49every passing day. Even while riding her
- 15:51bicycle, Jihoon couldn't shake the
- 15:53feeling that Yuju might suddenly appear
- 15:55at any moment. She looked toward his
- 15:56house and wondered whether the
- 15:57disturbing rumor circulating around town
- 15:59was true. According to the rumor, the
- 16:01lights in the abandoned house would turn
- 16:03on every dawn even though nobody was
- 16:05supposed to live there anymore. Jihoon
- 16:06couldn't help wishing that Yuju wasn't
- 16:08actually dead and had simply run away
- 16:10instead. Driven by her curiosity, Jihoon
- 16:13slightly opened the front door of the
- 16:14house and peered inside. To her
- 16:16surprise, she found Yuuta sitting there
- 16:18and smoking a cigarette. Seeing him, she
- 16:20greeted him with a simple hello. Ji-heon
- 16:21couldn't believe what she was seeing.
- 16:23She had assumed that Tae would sell the
- 16:25house, so she had never expected him to
- 16:26move in. Realizing that she might have
- 16:28entered the wrong place, she decided to
- 16:30leave and said goodbye to him. However,
- 16:32before she could go, Tae asked her name
- 16:34again. Ji-heon told him her name, and
- 16:36after hearing it, he called out to her.
- 16:38His sudden action startled her so much
- 16:40that she accidentally dropped her
- 16:41bicycle. Iu43 Tae then asked Ji-heon to
- 16:43bring him some side dishes. His request
- 16:45caught her completely off guard. He
- 16:46explained that there was nothing to eat
- 16:48in the house and that even if there had
- 16:49been any food, it would have already
- 16:51gone rotten. Ji-heon wondered what that
- 16:52had to do with her. Iu43 Tae clarified
- 16:54that he was asking her to bring side
- 16:56dishes as a housewarming gift. He also
- 16:58requested a bowl of rice if she had any
- 17:00available. Ji-heon couldn't believe what
- 17:02he was saying and wondered how he could
- 17:03make such an unreasonable request so
- 17:05casually. Iu43 Tae then revealed that he
- 17:07had seen something in U-jo's room that
- 17:09looked like a letter written to Ji-heon.
- 17:10Hearing this, Ji-heon was taken aback.
- 17:12Iu43 Tae asked whether she wanted to
- 17:14read it, but Ji-heon thought he was
- 17:15incredibly shameless for using the
- 17:17letter to get her attention. She
- 17:19wondered what he would do if she
- 17:20refused. Iu43 Tae calmly warned her that
- 17:22if she said no, he would have to torment
- 17:24her. Ji-heon eventually returned home,
- 17:26packed some side dishes, and brought
- 17:27them back to Iu43 Tae. As she made her
- 17:29way there, she reflected on how she had
- 17:31spent so long swallowing her grief and
- 17:32keeping her mourning to herself that her
- 17:34patience had finally run out. Now,
- 17:36someone with whom she could discuss her
- 17:38memories of U-jo had moved to Chuwari.
- 17:40Perhaps her real summer vacation was
- 17:42finally beginning. After returning to
- 17:43the house, Ji-heon asked Iu43 Tae where
- 17:45the pots, bowls, and chopsticks were.
- 17:47Instead of answering, he simply said
- 17:49that he was hungry. Ji-heon pointed out
- 17:51that he needed chopsticks to eat and
- 17:52wondered whether he had planned to scoop
- 17:54up the food with his fingers. Iu43 Tae
- 17:55got up and sat down properly before
- 17:57explaining that he did have chopsticks,
- 17:59specifically the ones that had come with
- 18:00his jjajangmyeon. Watching him, Ji-heon
- 18:02realized that he hadn't actually been
- 18:04glaring at her earlier. He had simply
- 18:06been lost in thought. As Iu43 Tae began
- 18:07eating, Ji-heon wondered where the
- 18:09letter was. She then grabbed his hand
- 18:11and told him to eat slowly. She also
- 18:13corrected the way he was holding his
- 18:14chopsticks and tried to teach him how to
- 18:16use them properly. However, she soon
- 18:18realized that there was no point in
- 18:19trying to teach him that day. While he
- 18:21continued eating, Jiheon asked whether
- 18:23he was 20 years old, which made him only
- 18:251 year older than her. Ute confirmed
- 18:27that he was. She then asked whether he
- 18:29attended college, but he reminded her
- 18:30that he had already explained that he
- 18:32had dropped out of high school during
- 18:33his first year. Jiheon was surprised to
- 18:35learn that Ute's highest level of
- 18:36education was middle school. She
- 18:38realized that he was even more
- 18:39delinquent than she had initially
- 18:41thought. She then asked whether he was
- 18:42working at the moment. Ute explained
- 18:44that his father had sold his own child
- 18:46to pay off his debts, so he was working
- 18:48there as a result. Hearing this shocking
- 18:49revelation, Jiheon was left completely
- 18:51stunned. Jiheon wondered whether Ute had
- 18:53been unable to attend Ujo's funeral
- 18:55because of his work. Meanwhile, Ute
- 18:57announced that he had paid for his meal
- 18:59and asked whether she had any more
- 19:00questions. Jiheon realized that he was
- 19:02implying he had only answered her
- 19:03questions because she had given him
- 19:05food. Ute confirmed this and told her
- 19:07not to come back next time. After saying
- 19:09that, Ute began smoking a cigarette.
- 19:11Jiheon asked him to wait until she left
- 19:13before smoking, explaining that she
- 19:15would be leaving as soon as she received
- 19:17the letter anyway. Ute seemed confused
- 19:19by her request and repeated the word
- 19:20letter. Jiheon reminded him that he had
- 19:22mentioned a letter Ujo had written to
- 19:24her. However, Ute bluntly told her that
- 19:26there was no way such a letter existed.
- 19:28He added that he was illiterate and
- 19:29couldn't read. Jiheon was left confused
- 19:31by his response, but Ute simply called
- 19:33her an idiot. Jiheon stood up and began
- 19:35walking away. Just as she was about to
- 19:37leave, Ute called her by name and
- 19:39revealed that he and Ujo shared only
- 19:41half their blood. They had the same
- 19:43father, but were not full brothers.
- 19:44Jiheon asked what difference that made.
- 19:46Ute explained that his relationship with
- 19:48Ujo was even more distant than hers.
- 19:50Since he was only a half brother, he
- 19:52told her not to pay him any attention.
- 19:54Jiheon turned around to look at him as
- 19:55he continued speaking. Ute remarked that
- 19:57Jiheon's mother seemed to have raised
- 19:59her in a sheltered environment. He
- 20:00explained that throughout his life he
- 20:02had learned that there was always a
- 20:03reason behind the things people warned
- 20:05others not to do and the people they
- 20:06advised them to stay away from. Jiheon
- 20:08understood what he was trying to say. In
- 20:10other words, he was taking a complicated
- 20:12and indirect approach to telling her
- 20:14that she shouldn't come to his house
- 20:15anymore. As she left, she thought that
- 20:17even if he hadn't said anything, she had
- 20:19no reason to return anyway. After After
- 20:21outside, Jiheon reflected on how her
- 20:23peaceful everyday life had been shaken
- 20:24once by Yu-ju's death and then again by
- 20:26the sudden appearance of his older
- 20:28brother. She wanted to return to her
- 20:29ordinary life away from the
- 20:31complications Yu-tae had brought into
- 20:32it. Later, back at home, Ji-hon found
- 20:35herself looking at the chopsticks.
- 20:36Suddenly, a woman behind her asked what
- 20:38she was doing. Ji-hon casually replied
- 20:40that she was just looking at them. Just
- 20:42then, someone called out to her from
- 20:43outside, so she quickly hid the
- 20:45chopsticks inside her table. When Ji-hon
- 20:47opened the gate, she discovered that her
- 20:49teacher had arrived. She invited him
- 20:50inside and after entering, he asked
- 20:52whether she had reviewed her lessons.
- 20:54Ji-hon confirmed that she had. However,
- 20:56as the lesson began, she noticed the
- 20:58smell of cigarettes. While teaching her,
- 21:00the teacher kept looking at Ji-hon's
- 21:01body in an inappropriate way. Ji-hon
- 21:03noticed his behavior but chose not to
- 21:05say anything. Instead, she pointed out
- 21:07that she didn't really understand a
- 21:08particular part of the lesson. The
- 21:09teacher asked which part she was
- 21:11struggling with and Ji-hon replied that
- 21:13she didn't understand any of it. He then
- 21:14suggested that they occasionally hold
- 21:16their lessons somewhere like a cafe.
- 21:18However, Ji-hon politely declined and
- 21:20said that there was no need. The teacher
- 21:21then questioned whether she actually
- 21:23wanted to go to college. Before Ji-hon
- 21:25could respond, her aunt appeared and
- 21:26announced that Ji-hon needed to eat
- 21:27dinner. She also asked the teacher why
- 21:29he hadn't left yet. Startled by the
- 21:31sudden interruption, the teacher
- 21:33hurriedly gathered himself and left.
- 21:34After he was gone, Ji-hon's aunt
- 21:36complained that there was little point
- 21:38in being good at studying when the
- 21:39teacher looked the way he did. Ji-hon
- 21:41warned her that he might hear her, but
- 21:42her aunt didn't care. Her aunt grabbed
- 21:44Ji-hon's cheeks with both hands and
- 21:46insisted that the teacher could hear
- 21:47whatever he wanted because he wasn't the
- 21:49one paying for the lessons. She was the
- 21:50one paying and Ji-hon only needed to
- 21:52stop worrying about everything else and
- 21:54focus entirely on studying. Her aunt
- 21:56reminded Ji-hon that she was her
- 21:57mother's dream and her aunt's hope. She
- 21:59then complained that without Ji-hon, she
- 22:01wouldn't have to live the way she did,
- 22:02waiting on an old man and looking after
- 22:04his stepsons. She insisted that Ji-hon
- 22:06absolutely could not get involved with
- 22:08some ridiculous man the way her mother
- 22:09had. Her aunt explained that once Ji-hon
- 22:11entered college, she would meet all
- 22:13kinds of people. For now, she simply
- 22:15needed to endure her circumstances a
- 22:17little longer. After delivering this
- 22:18lecture, her aunt finally left. while
- 22:21cutting vegetables, Ji-hon's aunt
- 22:22brought up something she had heard about
- 22:24Yu-ju's family. She mentioned the boy
- 22:26who had died of tuberculosis, the son of
- 22:28the Kang family, and said she had heard
- 22:29that his older brother had moved into
- 22:31the neighborhood. Her aunt continued
- 22:32explaining that people were saying the
- 22:34man walked around glaring intimidatingly
- 22:35at everyone. Nobody seemed to know what
- 22:37he did for a living, and his presence
- 22:39was supposedly ruining the
- 22:40neighborhood's atmosphere. According to
- 22:41her, this was what the grandmother from
- 22:43Jeju had said. Jihun questioned whether
- 22:45Eutae had actually caused an accident or
- 22:47done something wrong. Her aunt predicted
- 22:49that he probably would soon. She sighed
- 22:51and complained that if a young man was
- 22:52going to move into the neighborhood, it
- 22:54would have been better if he were
- 22:55someone normal and decent. She then
- 22:57remarked that it was their bad luck that
- 22:58a handsome thug had ended up living near
- 23:00Jihun. Her aunt strictly warned her that
- 23:02if she ever saw the man, she absolutely
- 23:04must not talk to him. She shouldn't even
- 23:06greet him if their eyes happened to
- 23:07meet. Her aunt insisted that meeting a
- 23:09man like him could ruin a woman's life
- 23:10instantly. She reassured Jihun that once
- 23:12she entered college, she would find
- 23:14plenty of men with good looks,
- 23:15respectable backgrounds, and good
- 23:17personalities. Hearing all this, Jihun
- 23:20returned to her room and looked at the
- 23:21chopsticks she had hidden earlier. That
- 23:23night, Jihun took her bicycle and headed
- 23:25toward Eutae's house. As she rode, she
- 23:27reminded herself that she wouldn't look
- 23:28at him or try to talk to him. She would
- 23:30simply leave the chopsticks in his
- 23:31mailbox and come straight back. All she
- 23:33needed to do was leave them in the
- 23:35mailbox and return home. However, when
- 23:37Jihun arrived outside Eutae's house, she
- 23:39discovered that he was already standing
- 23:41outside. She cautiously greeted him with
- 23:43a quiet hello. Eutae turned toward her,
- 23:45looked at her, and remarked that she had
- 23:47come back again. Eutae notices Jihun
- 23:49returning to his house and remarks that
- 23:50she has come again. Just then, one of
- 23:52the chopsticks slips from Jihun's hand
- 23:54and falls to the ground. Eutae notices
- 23:56it, bends down, and picks it up for her.
- 23:58Feeling embarrassed, Jihun explains that
- 24:00her mother had asked her to bring
- 24:02something for him. Her mother had
- 24:03apparently seen him eating while passing
- 24:05by earlier, and noticed that he had a
- 24:06terrible grip when using chopsticks.
- 24:08Jihun awkwardly tries to explain the
- 24:10situation, but she soon realizes that
- 24:12she is rambling and has no idea what she
- 24:14is even saying. After listening to her
- 24:16explanation, Eutae dismisses her words
- 24:18as nonsense. Jihun immediately lowers
- 24:20her head, agrees that she is indeed
- 24:22talking nonsense, and prepares to leave.
- 24:24However, before she can walk away, Eutae
- 24:26asks whether she would like to eat
- 24:28something before leaving. Jiheon accepts
- 24:30his offer and the two of them head
- 24:32inside the house to have a meal
- 24:33together. While they are eating, Yuta
- 24:35picks up a piece of paper and begins
- 24:36examining it. Jiheon notices what he is
- 24:38doing and becomes confused because he
- 24:40had previously claimed that he could not
- 24:41read. She asks what he is looking at and
- 24:43Yuta casually explains that it is the
- 24:45electricity bill. His answer leaves
- 24:47Jiheon even more puzzled as she cannot
- 24:49understand how he can read the bill
- 24:50despite claiming that he cannot read.
- 24:52When Jiheon points out this
- 24:53contradiction, Yuta admits that he lied
- 24:55to her. He explains that final
- 24:57consonants are particularly difficult
- 24:58for him to read. Other children seem to
- 25:00learn how to read naturally at some
- 25:02point, but he never had anyone who could
- 25:03teach him properly. Jiheon reminds him
- 25:05that he attended school, wondering why
- 25:07he never learned there. Yuta reveals
- 25:09that his teacher once laughed at him and
- 25:11after that humiliating experience, he
- 25:13never asked anyone for help again.
- 25:14Jiheon explains that he only needs to
- 25:16learn a little more because reading is
- 25:17not as difficult as he thinks. As she
- 25:19speaks, she notices several books lying
- 25:21nearby and begins to understand
- 25:23something about him. Although Yuta
- 25:25struggles with reading, he has not
- 25:26completely given up on learning. Seeing
- 25:28the books makes Jiheon realize that a
- 25:30part of him still wants to improve
- 25:31himself, even if he finds it difficult
- 25:33to admit it openly. Just then, Yuta
- 25:35holds up the chopsticks and asks Jiheon
- 25:37to teach him how to use them properly.
- 25:39Jiheon explains that he simply needs to
- 25:40place his fingers through the holes,
- 25:42just as she had shown him the previous
- 25:43time. She then reaches for his hand and
- 25:46carefully adjusts his fingers, helping
- 25:47him hold the chopsticks correctly. Yuta
- 25:49allows her to guide his hand as she
- 25:51patiently demonstrates the proper
- 25:52technique. After watching Yuta use the
- 25:54chopsticks more effectively, Jiheon
- 25:56becomes pleased with his progress. She
- 25:58happily praises him for doing much
- 25:59better than before and tells him that
- 26:01his technique looks great. However, as
- 26:03she continues holding his hand, she
- 26:05suddenly becomes conscious of the
- 26:06closeness between them. Yuta looks
- 26:08directly into her eyes, leaving Jiheon
- 26:10feeling slightly embarrassed. She begins
- 26:12wondering whether she has overreacted to
- 26:14the situation. Feeling awkward, Jiheon
- 26:16decides that she should leave. Yuta
- 26:17immediately asks where she is going and
- 26:19she explains that she is returning to
- 26:21her own house. However, before she can
- 26:23move away, Yuta comes closer and asks
- 26:25her to teach him His unexpected request
- 26:28catches Jiheon off guard and she looks
- 26:30at him in surprise. Eu-tae explains that
- 26:32he needs to graduate from high school to
- 26:33find a job, but studying alone is
- 26:35proving to be difficult for him. He
- 26:37seems genuinely interested in getting
- 26:38her help, even though he does not
- 26:40express his feelings particularly
- 26:41openly. Ji-heon pauses to consider his
- 26:43request before reluctantly explaining
- 26:45that she does not think she can help
- 26:46because she is busy. Eu-tae simply
- 26:48accepts her answer and responds that it
- 26:50is fine without trying to persuade her
- 26:52further. Later that evening, Ji-heon
- 26:54lies on the floor of her house in front
- 26:55of a fan thinking about what happened
- 26:57earlier. She begins wondering whether
- 26:59she should have refused Eu-tae's
- 27:00request. Her aunt had always possessed
- 27:02sharp instincts, and Ji-heon knows that
- 27:04if her aunt discovered she was spending
- 27:05time with a guy, the consequences would
- 27:07be difficult to imagine. Despite these
- 27:09concerns, Ji-heon cannot stop worrying
- 27:11about Eu-tae and his situation. While
- 27:13she is lost in thought, Ji-heon receives
- 27:15a phone call from her teacher. After
- 27:17answering, she learns that he has
- 27:18apparently left his lighter behind and
- 27:20wants her to bring it to the bus stop.
- 27:21Ji-heon agrees to help and tells him to
- 27:23wait for a moment. She then takes the
- 27:25lighter and heads to the bus stop, where
- 27:27she waits for him to arrive. Soon
- 27:29afterward, the teacher pulls up in his
- 27:30car. Ji-heon approaches him and returns
- 27:32the lighter, and he thanks her for
- 27:34bringing it back. Believing that their
- 27:35interaction is over, Ji-heon politely
- 27:37informs him that she is going back
- 27:38inside and says that she will see him
- 27:40the following day. However, just as she
- 27:42prepares to leave, the teacher suddenly
- 27:44grabs her hand. Startled by his
- 27:46unexpected action, Ji-heon immediately
- 27:48tries to pull her hand away. The teacher
- 27:50questions why she is leaving so soon and
- 27:52then offers to take her for a drive. He
- 27:54suggests that she has probably never
- 27:56ridden in such an expensive car before,
- 27:58making it clear that he is trying to
- 27:59impress her with his wealth. Meanwhile,
- 28:01Ji-heon begins thinking that she needs
- 28:02to inform her aunt that she is quitting
- 28:04her tutoring arrangement with him.
- 28:05Ji-heon makes it clear that his behavior
- 28:07is making her uncomfortable. However,
- 28:09the teacher dismisses her concerns and
- 28:11brings up the possibility of getting
- 28:12into college. He tells her that she does
- 28:14not need to feel burdened because if she
- 28:16works hard with him, she can get into
- 28:17the same college as well. Ji-heon
- 28:19refuses to entertain his offer and
- 28:21calmly insists that she is leaving.
- 28:23Despite her repeated attempts to end the
- 28:24conversation, the teacher continues
- 28:26pushing his intentions. As Ji-heon turns
- 28:28to leave, the teacher finally admits
- 28:30that he likes her. Ji-heon gives him a
- 28:31brief response and continues walking
- 28:33away, showing no interest in his
- 28:35confession. However, the teacher grabs
- 28:37her hand again and questions whether
- 28:38that is all she has to say in response
- 28:40to his feelings. Jihyun becomes
- 28:42increasingly uncomfortable and firmly
- 28:44tells him to let go of her hand. At that
- 28:46moment, U-tae happens to be approaching
- 28:48from behind them. The teacher notices
- 28:49him coming toward them and turns his
- 28:51attention back to Jihyun. Looking at the
- 28:53approaching man, he asks Jihyun whether
- 28:55she knows him, leaving the situation
- 28:57hanging as U-tae continues walking
- 28:58toward them. U-tae says nothing and
- 29:00simply walks in front of Jihyun, asking
- 29:03whether she needs any help. His sudden
- 29:04appearance catches Jihyun completely off
- 29:06guard, leaving her visibly startled.
- 29:08Meanwhile, the teacher looks at U-tae
- 29:10and asks whether he is Jihyun's cousin,
- 29:12trying to understand their relationship.
- 29:14U-tae glances around the surrounding
- 29:16area and remarks that there are not many
- 29:17people watching them. He then turns
- 29:19toward the teacher and fixes him with a
- 29:21terrifying death glare before asking
- 29:23where he lives. The teacher immediately
- 29:24becomes extremely nervous under U-tae's
- 29:26intimidating gaze. His eyes then fall on
- 29:29the bag U-tae is holding, making him
- 29:31even more uncomfortable. Unable to
- 29:32handle the situation, the teacher
- 29:34quickly gets into his car and drives
- 29:36away. Jihyun watches him leave, feeling
- 29:38somewhat surprised by how easily U-tae
- 29:40has frightened him. After the teacher
- 29:41leaves, Jihyun turns toward U-tae and
- 29:44tries to say something to him. However,
- 29:46before she can get a word out, U-tae
- 29:47turns around and starts walking away
- 29:49without waiting for her response. Jihyun
- 29:51calls out to him politely, trying to get
- 29:53his attention, but he completely ignores
- 29:55her and continues walking. Confused by
- 29:57his behavior, Jihyun wonders where he is
- 29:59going and calls after him again, asking
- 30:01wait for just a second. This time, U-tae
- 30:03finally stops while walking and Jihyun
- 30:05accidentally bumps lightly into his
- 30:07back. He turns around and hands her an
- 30:08ice cream, explaining that Kang Woo-ju
- 30:10used to love that particular kind.
- 30:12Jihyun looks at him in surprise and
- 30:14realizes that he knows about U-ju and
- 30:16her connection to him. She begins to
- 30:17understand that U-tae is aware of her
- 30:19relationship with the deceased boy.
- 30:21However, instead of offering any further
- 30:22explanation, U-tae remarks that Jihyun
- 30:24is quite a fool herself. After saying
- 30:26this, he turns around and walks straight
- 30:28into his house, leaving her standing
- 30:30outside cream in her hand. Jihyun
- 30:32watches him disappear inside and
- 30:34realizes that she had known perfectly
- 30:36well that the situation was bait meant
- 30:37to draw her in. Yet, before she even
- 30:39realized what was happening, she had
- 30:41already been swept away by Yu Tae's
- 30:43effortless charm and mysterious
- 30:44presence. Inside the house, Yu Tae sits
- 30:46in front of a fan, casually reading a
- 30:48book while eating his ice cream. Just
- 30:50then, Ji Hun enters the house and brings
- 30:52up the matter of his studies. She
- 30:53explains that all she needs to do is
- 30:55help him pass the GED examination. Yu
- 30:57Tae responds with a slight smile,
- 30:59agreeing that she can help him if she is
- 31:01willing to do so. His relaxed attitude
- 31:03makes it seem as though he has no
- 31:04intention of taking the situation too
- 31:05seriously. Meanwhile, Ji On's aunt is
- 31:08having an angry phone conversation with
- 31:09the teacher who had been tutoring Ji On.
- 31:11She furiously questions whether he
- 31:13seriously thought Ji On would be an easy
- 31:15target. She threatens to spread rumors
- 31:17throughout his school and ruin his
- 31:18reputation completely. Even when the
- 31:20teacher apologizes, Ji On's aunt refuses
- 31:22to accept it. She angrily points out
- 31:24that he had confessed his feelings to a
- 31:26girl who had not even finished high
- 31:27school and insists that a simple apology
- 31:29cannot make up for such behavior. Unable
- 31:31to tolerate her sister's anger any
- 31:33longer, Ji Hun's mother intervenes and
- 31:35tells her older sister that she has gone
- 31:36far enough. She points out that nothing
- 31:38particularly serious has happened to Ji
- 31:40Hun and reminds her that the teacher has
- 31:42already returned the money. However, Ji
- 31:44Hun's aunt refuses to calm down. She
- 31:46argues that people look down on them
- 31:48because they are a household consisting
- 31:49only of women. In her opinion, someone
- 31:51like that teacher needs to be properly
- 31:53humiliated so that he learns his lesson.
- 31:55Ji Hun's mother admits that she is
- 31:56exhausted by the entire situation. She
- 31:59feels partly responsible for hiring the
- 32:00wrong tutor and regrets allowing things
- 32:02to reach this point. However, she also
- 32:05has to think about going to work the
- 32:06following day and she desperately wants
- 32:08her sister to return home so she can
- 32:10finally rest. Her aunt then brings up Ji
- 32:12On's tutoring arrangements for the next
- 32:13day, wanting to know what they plan to
- 32:15do about her education. Ji On's mother
- 32:17explains that she will find another
- 32:18tutor, this time making sure to hire a
- 32:20woman. However, her aunt believes that
- 32:22this is still not enough and suggests
- 32:24sending Ji On to an academy instead. She
- 32:26even offers to handle the daily pickups
- 32:28herself so that Ji On can continue
- 32:30studying without encountering similar
- 32:31problems. Just then, Ji On appears and
- 32:33nervously suggests that she could simply
- 32:35study independently instead of having
- 32:37another tutor. Her mother agrees with
- 32:38the suggestion, deciding that
- 32:40self-directed learning would be a better
- 32:41option for the time being. However,
- 32:43Jihyeon's aunt becomes irritated by the
- 32:45response and feels as though they are
- 32:47dismissing her concerns as unnecessary
- 32:49drama. Angry that neither of them seems
- 32:51to appreciate her efforts, she complains
- 32:53that her opinion apparently does not
- 32:54matter at all. She then turns around and
- 32:56leaves, telling the two of them to
- 32:58figure everything out themselves. After
- 32:59her aunt leaves, Jihyeon's mother also
- 33:01prepares to go to bed. Before leaving,
- 33:03she reminds Jihyeon that she must take
- 33:05responsibility for her own studies from
- 33:07now on. Whether she chooses to study at
- 33:08home or go to a study cafe, she will
- 33:10have to manage everything independently.
- 33:12Since her mother has to work the
- 33:14following day, she explains that she is
- 33:15going to bed and leaves Jihyeon to
- 33:17handle the situation herself. The next
- 33:19morning, Jihyeon begins tutoring Eutae.
- 33:21While helping him study, she notices
- 33:23that he is spending far too much time on
- 33:25a single passage. She becomes frustrated
- 33:27and points out that he will waste all
- 33:28his time if he continues studying at
- 33:30such a slow pace. Eutae calmly explains
- 33:32that he is spending so long on the
- 33:34passage because he genuinely does not
- 33:36understand it. However, Jihyeon reminds
- 33:38him that she had already told him to
- 33:39move on whenever he failed to understand
- 33:41something instead of getting stuck on
- 33:42it. Jihyeon further explains that
- 33:44studying is not a competition to
- 33:45determine who can spend the longest time
- 33:47reading a novel. She wants Eutae to
- 33:49understand that he needs to manage his
- 33:50time properly and focus on making
- 33:52progress rather than obsessing over a
- 33:54single difficult passage. As she
- 33:55explains the material, she moves closer
- 33:57to him to help him study more
- 33:59effectively. Their faces end up much
- 34:00closer than before, creating a brief
- 34:02moment of silence between them. While
- 34:04Jihyeon is standing close to him, Eutae
- 34:06suddenly calls her by her name. Jihyeon
- 34:08immediately turns toward him and the two
- 34:10of them look directly into each other's
- 34:11eyes. For a moment, neither seems to
- 34:13know what to say. Eutae eventually turns
- 34:15his face away, takes out a packet of
- 34:17cigarettes, and admits that he is
- 34:18already embarrassed enough, asking her
- 34:20to take it easy on him instead of
- 34:22putting so much pressure on him. Jihyeon
- 34:23immediately tells Eutae that he is not
- 34:25allowed to smoke. However, rather than
- 34:27taking her warning seriously, Eutae
- 34:29simply smiles and lights a cigarette. He
- 34:31then stands up and begins smoking as
- 34:33though her instructions do not concern
- 34:34him at all. Jihyeon watches him from
- 34:36where she is sitting and reminds him
- 34:38that she can still smell the cigarette
- 34:39smoke even from a distance. She explains
- 34:41that cigarette smoke can travel more
- 34:43than 100 m. Yuta turns around and points
- 34:45out that he is already standing more
- 34:47than 100 m away from her. His response
- 34:49leaves Jihun completely startled. She
- 34:51realizes that he clearly has no idea how
- 34:53far 100 m actually is. Looking at him,
- 34:56she begins to understand just how much
- 34:58he still needs to learn, both in his
- 34:59studies and in everyday life. Despite
- 35:01her frustration, Jihun realizes that
- 35:03teaching Yuta is going to involve far
- 35:05more than simply helping him prepare for
- 35:07the GED examination. Sometime later,
- 35:09Jihun finds herself eating with Yuta,
- 35:11but she soon becomes annoyed by how much
- 35:13food he is consuming. She points out
- 35:14that he is eating too much, reminding
- 35:16him that she is the one who brought the
- 35:17food. She had already told him to slow
- 35:19down and take smaller bites, but Yuta
- 35:21casually asks what the problem is.
- 35:23Instead of listening to her advice, he
- 35:25tells her that she should simply eat
- 35:26faster. Jihun warns him that he will
- 35:28suffer from indigestion if he continues
- 35:30eating like that and insists that he
- 35:32needs to slow down. However, Yuta
- 35:34stubbornly refuses to listen. Frustrated
- 35:36by his behavior, Jihun jokingly wonders
- 35:38whether he has a starving ghost attached
- 35:40to his back, explaining his insatiable
- 35:42appetite. Her comment irritates Yuta,
- 35:44who complains that she nags far too
- 35:46much. He then questions whether she is
- 35:48always this meddlesome or whether she
- 35:50simply thinks he is an easy target whom
- 35:52she can push around however she likes.
- 35:53Jihun is taken aback by his accusation
- 35:56and demands to know what he means by
- 35:57calling himself a pushover. Yuta tells
- 36:00her to stop talking and give him a break
- 36:01before quietly returning to his meal.
- 36:03Watching him eat in silence, Jihun
- 36:05thinks that he is behaving like a moody
- 36:07teenager. However, she cannot let go of
- 36:09his earlier remark and asks again what
- 36:11he meant by calling himself a pushover.
- 36:13Yuta explains that he is referring to
- 36:14the tutor who had previously been
- 36:16involved with her. His answer leaves
- 36:17Jihun confused and irritated. She had
- 36:19only offered him a little advice, yet he
- 36:21was treating her as though she had done
- 36:23something terrible to him. Yuta
- 36:24continues criticizing her, telling her
- 36:26that if she intends to act superior
- 36:27simply because she brought a few side
- 36:29dishes, she should remain quiet and eat
- 36:31whatever he puts on the table from then
- 36:32on. His harsh words leave Jihun stunned.
- 36:35He then moves closer to her and explains
- 36:37that she must think she can behave
- 36:38however she likes because he has been
- 36:39playing along with her. However, he He
- 36:41it clear that he never hired her to
- 36:43teach him proper manners or etiquette.
- 36:45Unable to tolerate his accusations any
- 36:46longer, Ji-heon finally loses her
- 36:48temper. She explains that if she had
- 36:50genuinely been trying to teach him
- 36:51proper manners, she would have pointed
- 36:53out every single bad habit he had.
- 36:55Instead, she had been holding back most
- 36:57of her comments. However, whenever
- 36:59Yu-tae greedily takes three side dishes
- 37:01for himself at once, she sometimes ends
- 37:03up with nothing left to eat. She is not
- 37:04angry simply because of his eating
- 37:06habits. She is frustrated because he
- 37:08shows absolutely no manners or
- 37:09consideration for anyone else. Yu-tae
- 37:11responds by telling her to get lost. His
- 37:13sudden hostility leaves Ji-heon
- 37:15completely shocked. He then throws his
- 37:17book outside and repeats his demand for
- 37:18her to leave. Ji-heon finally stands up,
- 37:21picks up her bag, and quietly agrees to
- 37:23go. She tries to keep her voice calm as
- 37:25she prepares to leave, refusing to argue
- 37:27with him any further. Meanwhile, Yu-tae
- 37:29takes out a cigarette and begins smoking
- 37:31as though nothing has happened. Before
- 37:32leaving, however, Ji-heon notices the
- 37:34cigarette in his hand. Her attention
- 37:36then shifts to the flower pot beside
- 37:37her, where Yu-tae's book has landed. She
- 37:39picks up the pot and suddenly throws all
- 37:41its water over him. Furious, she warns
- 37:43him never to let the house where Yu-cho
- 37:45once lived smell of cigarettes. After
- 37:47delivering her warning, she turns around
- 37:49and walks away, leaving Yu-tae behind.
- 37:51That night, as Ji-heon lies in bed, she
- 37:53begins reconsidering her actions. She
- 37:55wonders whether throwing water over
- 37:57Yu-tae was going too far and thinks
- 37:58that, being a year younger than him, she
- 38:00should probably have controlled her
- 38:01temper. Perhaps he had simply enjoyed
- 38:03the food so much that he could not stop
- 38:05eating. She realizes that she keeps
- 38:07seeing her younger self in him, which
- 38:09may be why she had stubbornly tried to
- 38:10correct his behavior without considering
- 38:12his feelings. Ji-won then begins
- 38:14remembering her own childhood. Before
- 38:16her widowed mother went looking for her
- 38:17aunt, her mother had been far too busy
- 38:19working to look after her properly. At
- 38:21the daycare center, both the teachers
- 38:22and the director treated Ji-won like an
- 38:24outcast. During that difficult period,
- 38:26the person who came to her rescue was a
- 38:28woman living next door who had three
- 38:29daughters of her own. After obtaining
- 38:31permission from Ji-won's mother, the
- 38:33woman began looking after Ji-won as
- 38:34though she were her youngest daughter.
- 38:36Under that woman's care, Ji-heon learned
- 38:38the basic rules of everyday life. She
- 38:40learned the difference between a spoon
- 38:41and a fork, how many times a day she
- 38:43should wash herself, and what kinds of
- 38:45things people usually talked about
- 38:46during meals. These seemingly ordinary
- 38:48lessons helped her understand how to
- 38:50behave around others and gradually gave
- 38:52her a sense of belonging. After that,
- 38:54her mother became determined to build a
- 38:55normal life for them, and Jiheon never
- 38:57returned to being the miserable little
- 38:58girl she had once been. Remembering
- 39:00those years makes Jiheon feel strangely
- 39:02embarrassed. She realizes that she had
- 39:04been trying to change the lives of Yu
- 39:05Tae and his brother simply because she
- 39:07wanted to impose the standard she had
- 39:08learned during her own childhood.
- 39:10Without fully realizing it, she had
- 39:12started acting like some kind of savior
- 39:14to the Kang brothers. She had even lost
- 39:16her temper with a man who had never
- 39:17asked for her help in the first place.
- 39:19Yu Tae was the one earning his own
- 39:20living, and he probably understood the
- 39:22ways of the world better than she did.
- 39:24Jiheon finally decides that it is time
- 39:25to turn off her meddlesome side and stop
- 39:27interfering in his life. After that
- 39:29incident, Jiheon spends nearly a week
- 39:31without thinking much about Yu Tae. One
- 39:33day, she receives a phone call from her
- 39:35aunt, who informs her that her mother
- 39:36will be home late. Her aunt explains
- 39:38that she is helping out at a factory and
- 39:40will be staying at a friend's house
- 39:41before heading straight to work from
- 39:43there. She then asks whether Jiheon
- 39:44still has enough side dishes at home.
- 39:46After ending the call, Jiheon realizes
- 39:48that she does not want to spend the
- 39:50evening alone in the house. Later that
- 39:51night, Jiheon lies in bed thinking about
- 39:53Yu Tae despite her earlier decision to
- 39:55stay away from him. As she continues
- 39:57dwelling on him, she quietly admits to
- 39:59herself that she misses him. Unable to
- 40:01ignore her feelings any longer, she gets
- 40:03up, takes her bicycle, and begins riding
- 40:05toward his house. As she breathes in the
- 40:06warm summer breeze, her tangled thoughts
- 40:08slowly begin to unravel, allowing her to
- 40:10understand her emotions more clearly.
- 40:12Jiheon realizes that her feelings toward
- 40:14the Kang brothers had been hypocritical
- 40:16all along. She had been clumsily
- 40:17imitating the kindness of the woman who
- 40:19had once taken care of her, believing
- 40:21that she could somehow improve their
- 40:22lives by teaching them how to live
- 40:23properly. However, she finally
- 40:25understands that what she truly needed
- 40:27was somewhere to escape from her own
- 40:28loneliness. Her desire to help Yu Tae
- 40:31had been mixed with her own need for
- 40:32companionship, and she had failed to
- 40:34recognize the difference between caring
- 40:35for someone and trying to change them.
- 40:37When Jiheon finally arrives outside Yu
- 40:39Tae's house, she notices that all the
- 40:41lights are turned off. This immediately
- 40:43strikes her as strange because Yu Tae
- 40:44usually keeps the lights on even at 4:00
- 40:46in the afternoon. She remembers that he
- 40:48even sleeps with the lights on, which
- 40:50had once made her suspect that he was
- 40:52afraid of the dark. The thought makes
- 40:53her feel an unexpected connection to
- 40:55him, as she too knows what it is like to
- 40:57be afraid of the darkness. Just then,
- 40:59Jihun hears a noise coming from inside
- 41:00the house. Curious and slightly
- 41:02concerned, she carefully opens the gate
- 41:04a little and peeks inside to see what is
- 41:06happening. Through the opening, she
- 41:07notices a man standing near Eute. The
- 41:09man speaks casually, explaining that an
- 41:11older man adores Eute so much that the
- 41:13other people around him have simply
- 41:15become jealous. His words suggest that
- 41:17there is some kind of conflict involving
- 41:18Eute and the people around him. As the
- 41:20man prepares to leave, he continues
- 41:22speaking to Eute, remarking that younger
- 41:24brothers are supposed to yield in
- 41:25situations like this. He then adds that
- 41:27Eute would not understand such matters
- 41:29because he does not have an older
- 41:30brother. After making this remark, the
- 41:32man walks toward the exit without
- 41:34noticing Jihun hiding beside the gate.
- 41:36Jihun remains completely still, allowing
- 41:38him to pass without discovering her
- 41:40presence. Once the man has left, Jihun
- 41:42looks inside the house again and finally
- 41:44sees Eute lying on the floor. The sight
- 41:46leaves her uncertain about what has
- 41:47happened and why the man was speaking to
- 41:49him in such a manner. She had come to
- 41:50visit Eute because she missed him, but
- 41:52instead, she has stumbled upon a
- 41:54disturbing situation that she knows
- 41:55nothing about. Standing beside the gate,
- 41:57Jihun silently watches him, realizing
- 41:59that there may be far more to Eute's
- 42:01life than she has ever understood. Jihun
- 42:03watches Eute lying on the floor and
- 42:04begins thinking that Eute's brother does
- 42:06not want her help or kindness. She is
- 42:08already overwhelmed by her mother's and
- 42:10aunt's constant nagging, and she does
- 42:11not want to involve herself in another
- 42:13person's problems. Deciding that it
- 42:15would be better to stay out of his
- 42:16business, she tells herself to pretend
- 42:18she never saw him. However, before she
- 42:20can leave, Eute slowly gets up and sits
- 42:22on the floor. Seeing him move, Jihun
- 42:24approaches him. The moment she gets a
- 42:25proper look at his face, she is shocked
- 42:27by the injuries covering it. Alarmed by
- 42:29his condition, she immediately takes out
- 42:31her phone and prepares to call emergency
- 42:33services. However, Eute grabs her hand
- 42:35and firmly tells her not to call anyone.
- 42:37Jihun protests, explaining that his
- 42:39condition is far too serious and that he
- 42:41needs to go to a hospital. Eute refuses,
- 42:43insisting that he does not want to go.
- 42:45Confused by his stubborn refusal, Jihun
- 42:47asks why he is so unwilling to seek
- 42:49medical treatment. Eute finally admits
- 42:51that he does not enough money to pay the
- 42:53hospital bill. He then tells her to
- 42:54leave him alone. Ji-heon asks whether he
- 42:56has any medicine at home and offers to
- 42:58give him something before leaving. She
- 43:00reminds him that it is not as though he
- 43:01wants to die, hoping to convince him to
- 43:03take better care of himself. Uta looks
- 43:05at Ji-heon for a moment before turning
- 43:07his face away without responding.
- 43:08Ji-heon once again takes out her phone,
- 43:10preparing to make the call despite his
- 43:12objections. However, she suddenly stops
- 43:14and begins thinking about their
- 43:15financial situation. Neither Uju nor his
- 43:17older brother has much money, and she
- 43:19herself cannot afford to spend much
- 43:21either. With no one available to help
- 43:23them, she realizes that she has no
- 43:24choice but to handle the situation
- 43:26through her own physical effort. Ji-heon
- 43:28puts her phone away and begins searching
- 43:29Uta's room for medicine. Eventually, she
- 43:32finds a fever reducer. While searching,
- 43:34she also notices the book he had thrown
- 43:36away earlier. However, she does not have
- 43:38time to worry about it right now.
- 43:39Instead, she returns to Uta, grabs his
- 43:42leg, and begins helping him move inside.
- 43:44She tells him to try lying down on the
- 43:46blanket so that he can rest more
- 43:47comfortably. Uta weakly suggests that
- 43:50they should simply rest for 10 minutes.
- 43:51As Ji-heon struggles to help him, she
- 43:53begins wishing that she had been born a
- 43:54man. If she had been a man, she believes
- 43:57she could have protected Uju from the
- 43:58bullies who tormented him at school. Her
- 44:00mother and aunt might also have worried
- 44:02less about her, and she would have been
- 44:03physically strong enough to lift and
- 44:05move an injured man without so much
- 44:06difficulty. Watching Uta struggle with
- 44:08his condition, Ji-heon cannot help
- 44:10feeling frustrated by her own
- 44:11limitations. Meanwhile, Uta's thoughts
- 44:14drift toward his painful past and his
- 44:15relationship with Uju. Uju was the son
- 44:17his stepmother had given birth to. Their
- 44:19father was a violent man who considered
- 44:21raising his hand against his children
- 44:23perfectly natural. Unable to endure
- 44:25their father's behavior any longer,
- 44:26their stepmother eventually ran away at
- 44:28dawn, taking the house deed with her.
- 44:30Uta had been unable to stop her from
- 44:32leaving, even though Uju was only 10
- 44:34years old at the time, an age when it
- 44:36was entirely natural for a child to
- 44:38desperately miss his mother. Rather than
- 44:39allowing other people to mock their
- 44:41complicated and miserable family
- 44:42circumstances, Uta decided that it would
- 44:44be better to make them fear him. He
- 44:46believed that appearing intimidating
- 44:48would prevent others from looking down
- 44:49on him and Uju. Meanwhile, their
- 44:51father's problems continued to worsen.
- 44:53Irritated by repeated summons from the
- 44:55school, their father eventually signed
- 44:57Uite's school dropout form and walked
- 44:59away, forcing him to abandon his
- 45:00education. Despite everything, Uite had
- 45:02wanted to attend school and earn his
- 45:04high school diploma. He wanted to set an
- 45:06example for Ujo, whom he considered his
- 45:08only family. Even though they lived in a
- 45:10terrible house and faced miserable
- 45:11circumstances, Uite wanted to show his
- 45:14younger brother that it was still
- 45:15possible to attend school and build a
- 45:17better future. Unfortunately, his own
- 45:19dreams were taken away before he could
- 45:20achieve them. A year after Uite dropped
- 45:22out of school, he finally discovered the
- 45:24real reason behind his father's
- 45:26decision. His father had used his own
- 45:28son, who was skilled at fighting, as
- 45:29collateral to settle debts he had
- 45:31accumulated through gambling. Uite had
- 45:33essentially been handed over to someone
- 45:35who could use his physical strength to
- 45:36make money. That was how he ended up
- 45:38working under an old man who was
- 45:39notorious for crossing oceans to track
- 45:41people down and collect debts. Uite was
- 45:43only 18 when he began working for the
- 45:45old man. At the time, he believed that
- 45:47if he went out into the world and earned
- 45:49even a small amount of money, Ujo's
- 45:51situation would gradually improve.
- 45:53Whether he fought at school or fought
- 45:54while serving as a bodyguard for the old
- 45:56man during debt collection, he felt that
- 45:58the work was essentially the same. He
- 45:59had no idea how dangerous the world
- 46:01truly was or how deeply he was becoming
- 46:03involved in it. Eventually, Uite began
- 46:05to sense that he might lose his life if
- 46:07he continued down that path. Fearing the
- 46:09danger surrounding him, he decided to
- 46:11cut off contact with his family.
- 46:13Although he continued sending money
- 46:14regularly, he deliberately avoided
- 46:16meeting Ujo because he was afraid that
- 46:18seeing his younger brother would weaken
- 46:19his resolve and make it harder for him
- 46:21to continue working. As time passed,
- 46:23Uite became an adult and managed to
- 46:25acquire a house in the countryside,
- 46:26somewhere his father did not even know
- 46:28about. Through his work, he eventually
- 46:30caught the old man's attention and
- 46:31successfully entered his inner circle.
- 46:33Then, completely out of the blue, he
- 46:35received an order that he could not
- 46:37refuse. He began preparing to return to
- 46:39his hometown, believing that he would
- 46:40finally be able to move forward with the
- 46:42next stage of his life. However, before
- 46:44he could return, tragedy struck. Ujo
- 46:46died alone on the streets, leaving Uite
- 46:48devastated. Just the previous month, Ujo
- 46:50had called him and told him that his
- 46:52older brother was his only family. Those
- 46:54words now haunted Uite because Ujo had
- 46:56been the only family he had left as
- 46:58well. With his younger brother gone, Ute
- 47:00felt as though the last meaningful
- 47:01connection in his life had disappeared.
- 47:03Ute had scraped together money and sent
- 47:05it to Ujo so that his younger brother
- 47:06could go to the hospital and receive
- 47:08treatment. However, Ujo had never even
- 47:10spent the money. The realization made
- 47:12Ute's grief even more unbearable because
- 47:14all his sacrifices had failed to save
- 47:16the one person he had been trying to
- 47:17protect. In the end, he had worked so
- 47:19hard to earn money for Ujo only for his
- 47:21brother to die without receiving the
- 47:23help he desperately needed. Overwhelmed
- 47:24by grief and regret, Ute sent the money
- 47:27Ujo had saved to the old man to settle
- 47:28the remaining debts left behind by their
- 47:30father. He had lost the only person he
- 47:32truly cared about and he could no longer
- 47:34find any purpose in continuing his life.
- 47:36He understood that constantly thinking
- 47:37about the people he had lost and
- 47:39regretting decisions that could never be
- 47:40reversed would lead him nowhere. In his
- 47:42despair, he began feeling that death was
- 47:44the only destination left for him. Ute
- 47:46then thought about his position within
- 47:48the old man's organization. If he could
- 47:50not secure a place in the old man's
- 47:51inner circle, he would simply remain an
- 47:53errand boy at the office. After
- 47:55everything he had done to earn money, he
- 47:56had still failed to protect Ujo. He even
- 47:59began blaming his own grief for his
- 48:00younger brother's death believing that
- 48:02his relentless pursuit of money had
- 48:03somehow contributed to the tragedy. With
- 48:06his future appearing meaningless and his
- 48:07grief becoming unbearable, he began
- 48:09thinking that he might as well die if he
- 48:11was destined to remain a nobody. Just as
- 48:13Ute sinks deeper into his despair,
- 48:15Ji-heon's voice suddenly reaches him.
- 48:17She calls out to him urging him to open
- 48:18his eyes. Her voice gradually pulls him
- 48:20away from his painful thoughts. After a
- 48:22moment, Ute slowly opens his eyes and
- 48:24looks toward Ji-heon who is sitting
- 48:26beside him. As he focuses on her face,
- 48:28he finds himself returning to the
- 48:29present with Ji-heon still there beside
- 48:31him despite everything he had done to
- 48:33push her away. Ute lies injured in bed,
- 48:35his face and forehead covered in
- 48:37bandages. Sitting beside him, Yang
- 48:39Ji-heon gently places a cool cloth on
- 48:41his head. She admits that she genuinely
- 48:42thought he was going to die and had even
- 48:44prayed for the first time in her life.
- 48:46Just then, Ute slowly opens his eyes.
- 48:48Ji-heon is surprised to see him awake
- 48:50and leans closer to adjust the cloth.
- 48:52When he questions why she is removing
- 48:54it, and tells him that if he has enough
- 48:56energy to complain, he should eat
- 48:57something instead. As Ute lies back
- 48:59down, he feels Jihon's warm breath
- 49:01nearby. Despite enduring so much pain
- 49:04and coming close to death, nobody has
- 49:06ever cared for him like this before. Her
- 49:07gentle touch feels unfamiliar, yet
- 49:09strangely precious to him. Soon, Jihon
- 49:11picks up a spoon and begins feeding him.
- 49:13As Utae takes a bite, she checks whether
- 49:15the food is too hot. However, when she
- 49:17notices him staring down at the table,
- 49:19she becomes flustered and apologizes,
- 49:21offering to leave if her presence makes
- 49:22him uncomfortable. Instead, Utae asks
- 49:25her to eat before leaving. He admits
- 49:26that he does not want to eat alone, even
- 49:28if she is not hungry. Jihon agrees to
- 49:30share the meal with him. Utae even picks
- 49:32up a side dish with his chopsticks and
- 49:33places it on her spoon. Surprised by his
- 49:36gesture, Jihon reminds him that he
- 49:37should not eat plain porridge without
- 49:39any side dishes. After a brief silence,
- 49:41Utae looks at her and addresses her by
- 49:43her full name, Yang Jaeon. Hearing this,
- 49:45Jihon becomes nervous, wondering whether
- 49:47he is about to tell her to leave his
- 49:49house. However, she gathers her courage
- 49:51and explains that she always believed
- 49:52she was the only person left who still
- 49:54remembered Eui Jo. She had even thought
- 49:56that Utae, his own older brother, had
- 49:58forgotten him. Utae lowers his gaze and
- 50:00begins talking about himself. He
- 50:02explains that he is the kind of person
- 50:03who cannot stay close to anyone for
- 50:05long, and eventually, people lose
- 50:07whatever affection they have for him. He
- 50:08believes this is why he ended up killing
- 50:10his younger brother. Because of what
- 50:11happened, the older men who had taught
- 50:13him their trade came to hate him and
- 50:15beat him nearly to death. Jihon stares
- 50:17at him in shock, struggling to believe
- 50:19what she has just heard, and asks
- 50:20whether he is admitting that he killed
- 50:22Eui Jo. Without changing his expression,
- 50:24Utae calmly confirms that this is more
- 50:26or less what happened. Jihon had
- 50:27expected him to blame her for
- 50:28interfering in matters that were none of
- 50:30her business. Instead, she finds herself
- 50:32listening to his painful confession and
- 50:34the deep hatred he carries toward
- 50:36himself. Jihon then tells him that even
- 50:38when he was badly injured and barely
- 50:39conscious, he kept calling out Eui Jo's
- 50:41name. Hearing this, Utae remains silent
- 50:44for a moment before softly admitting
- 50:45that he was genuinely happy. Jihon
- 50:47explains that when she saw him falling
- 50:49asleep while calling for Eui Jo, it
- 50:51almost felt as though Eui Jo himself was
- 50:53asking her to save his older brother.
- 50:54She then apologizes for meddling in
- 50:56Utae's affairs once again. Looking at
- 50:58her affectionately, Utae calls her name
- 51:00once more. When Jihon responds, she
- 51:02suddenly realizes that he is speaking to
- 51:04her casually rather than using formal
- 51:06language. Before she can fully process
- 51:08the change, Yuta tells her that she is a
- 51:10good kid. With tears welling up in his
- 51:12eyes, he quietly thanks her. Jihoon is
- 51:14deeply touched by his words. Watching
- 51:16this grown man cry, she jokingly thinks
- 51:18that the world must really be coming to
- 51:19an end. Yuta then encourages her to eat
- 51:21more, suggesting that she have one dish
- 51:23now and save another for later. Jihoon
- 51:25playfully protests that she is not a pig
- 51:28and the two continue sharing their meal.
- 51:29For the first time, Yuta sees Jihoon off
- 51:32outside his house on a bright sunny day.
- 51:34Although it might seem like an ordinary
- 51:35moment to anyone else, it feels like a
- 51:37huge milestone for him. Meanwhile, the
- 51:39tension between Jihoon's mother and aunt
- 51:41remains as bad as ever. Jihoon begins to
- 51:43sense that something is wrong when she
- 51:45notices that an unusually large amount
- 51:46of medicine has been used from the first
- 51:48aid kit. When her mother asks about it,
- 51:50Jihoon nervously admits that her aunt
- 51:52was the one who used the medicine. Her
- 51:53mother is surprised to hear this and
- 51:55Jihoon panics internally, feeling that
- 51:56her life is completely ruined because
- 51:58her mother has happened to cut herself
- 51:59with a knife on this particular day.
- 52:01After ending the phone call, Jihoon's
- 52:03mother rubs her temples with a tired
- 52:04expression. She wonders whether she is
- 52:06becoming ill because everything seems to
- 52:08be getting worse as time goes on.
- 52:10Eventually, she puts down the phone,
- 52:12opens the front door, and announces that
- 52:13she is leaving for work. Only after her
- 52:15mother has left does Jihoon finally
- 52:17breathe a sigh of relief. Looking out of
- 52:19the window, Jihoon begins thinking about
- 52:20her future. She wonders whether she will
- 52:22get into university and whether her
- 52:24mother's unfulfilled dream will ever
- 52:25come true. She also wonders if the day
- 52:28will ever come when her mother's small
- 52:29shoulders can finally straighten without
- 52:31having to carry so many burdens. Jihoon
- 52:33returns to her desk and continues
- 52:34studying diligently. She realizes that
- 52:36her mother's dream is dragging her,
- 52:38someone who is afraid of heights, all
- 52:40the way to the top of a mountain.
- 52:41However, deep inside, the young Jihoon
- 52:43simply wants to grow flowers and lie
- 52:45down somewhere warm and sunny, enjoying
- 52:47a peaceful nap. She wonders how much
- 52:48more of her mother's and aunt's lives
- 52:50she will have to sacrifice before she
- 52:51can finally become an adult. Even her
- 52:53habit of constantly looking away and
- 52:55getting distracted must have a reason.
- 52:56As she draws a line with her pen, Jihoon
- 52:58realizes that she needs somewhere else
- 53:00to direct her attention while climbing
- 53:02down from this ridiculous mountain. She
- 53:03wants to find a different path instead
- 53:05of growing up only to live the same kind
- 53:07of life as her mother and aunt. Just
- 53:09then, Ji-won suddenly stretches her
- 53:10shoulders and looks startled as though
- 53:12an unexpected realization has come to
- 53:14her. Peeking through the doorway, she
- 53:16notices a black plastic bag hanging from
- 53:18the door handle. Curious, she checks
- 53:20inside and discovers some snacks along
- 53:22with a small note. The note tells her
- 53:23that the bag contains her tutoring fee
- 53:25and reminds her not to teach anyone for
- 53:27free from now on. Seeing this, Ji-hoon
- 53:29smiles happily, realizing that someone
- 53:31has left her a thoughtful gift and
- 53:32reminding herself that her efforts
- 53:34deserve to be appreciated.
