- 0:00My pygmy friend constantly puts me down
- 0:01in front of my boyfriend while
- 0:02pretending she was just one of the guys.
- 0:03I made her realize that she picked the
- 0:05wrong target. Kenzie called shotgun in
- 0:06my boyfriend's car every single time.
- 0:07Best friend rules, sorry sweetie. She'd
- 0:09been Caleb's best friend since third
- 0:10grade and she never let me forget it.
- 0:11She'd crash our date nights because
- 0:13Caleb needed a break from all the couple
- 0:14stuff. She'd chug a beer, crush the can
- 0:16on her forehead, and tell everyone she
- 0:17wasn't like other girls who needed a
- 0:18salad and a selfie. She'd even answer
- 0:20his phone when I called. He's busy,
- 0:21sweetie. Guy stuff. When I teared up at
- 0:23a sad movie once, she told Caleb he was
- 0:25lucky he had at least one girl in his
- 0:26life who didn't cry about everything.
- 0:27Guys hate drama. When I asked why she
- 0:29always had to sit between us, she
- 0:30twisted her little gold necklace and
- 0:32laughed. "I'm not jealous of you. I'm
- 0:33one of the guys." Every Friday she
- 0:35hosted poker night for Caleb and the
- 0:36guys. No girlfriends allowed. "You'd cry
- 0:38the second you lost five bucks." She
- 0:39loved telling everyone I'd been a casino
- 0:41cocktail waitress in college like it was
- 0:42a punchline. I never corrected her. Not
- 0:44even Caleb knew what I really did there.
- 0:45Then Caleb lost a bet to her and she
- 0:47made him skip my sister's graduation
- 0:48dinner to help her move a couch. "A
- 0:49bet's a bet," she said, smiling right at
- 0:51me. And Caleb actually did it. When I
- 0:52told him how much that hurt, he sighed.
- 0:54"She's like my sister. She's harmless."
- 0:55So I swallowed every comment because
- 0:57reacting only made me look like the
- 0:58dramatic girlfriend she kept describing.
- 1:00When I finally told Kenzie to back off,
- 1:01she laughed in my face. "Girls like you
- 1:03always make guys choose. That's why they
- 1:04end up with girls like me." Two weeks
- 1:05before Caleb's birthday, Kenzie called
- 1:07me at 1:00 a.m. I didn't pick up, so it
- 1:08went to voicemail. All four minutes of
- 1:09it. A pocket dial from a loud bar, but
- 1:11her voice was crystal clear. "At his
- 1:12birthday, I'll push her until she cries
- 1:14in front of everyone. Caleb hates drama.
- 1:15He'll dump her by Monday and guess
- 1:16who'll be right there." Her friend asked
- 1:18if she was serious and Kenzie just
- 1:19laughed. "I'm one of the guys. They
- 1:20never see it coming." I didn't cry. I
- 1:22saved that voicemail to my phone, my
- 1:23laptop, and my email. But she just
- 1:24called it a drunk joke and Caleb had
- 1:26known her for 15 years. I needed the
- 1:27guys to watch her lie first and I knew
- 1:29exactly where people lie the most. That
- 1:31Thursday, I texted the group chat asking
- 1:33if someone could teach me poker. "Wait,
- 1:34does a flush beat a straight?" Kenzie
- 1:36replied in under a minute. "Come
- 1:37tomorrow. I'll teach you myself. Loser
- 1:38of the last hand never comes to poker
- 1:40night again." Six laughing emojis from
- 1:42the guys. I typed back one word. "Deal."
- 1:44Friday, I lost the first few hands on
- 1:45purpose, asked dumb questions, and
- 1:47knocked chips off the table. Kenzie
- 1:48narrated every mistake to the guys like
- 1:49a sports announcer. And by midnight, her
- 1:51stack was huge. On the last hand, she
- 1:53shoved everything into the middle. "All
- 1:54in. Go ahead and cry, sweetie." Her
- 1:56fingers went straight to that little
- 1:57gold necklace. I had a pair of fives,
- 1:58barely anything. Call. She flipped a
- 2:00seven and a two, the worst hand in
- 2:01poker, not even a pair. The room went
- 2:03dead silent. "Who taught you to play
- 2:04like that?" she whispered. "I wasn't a
- 2:05cocktail waitress, Kenzie. I dealt poker
- 2:07for 3 years. Paid for college reading
- 2:08people like you. You twist that necklace
- 2:10every time you lie. You did it the day
- 2:11you swore you weren't jealous of me."
- 2:13Her face went red. "Okay." The bet was
- 2:14obviously a joke. Caleb's buddy Theo
- 2:16didn't even look up. "A bet's a bet,
- 2:17Kenz. Your rule." She turned to Caleb,
- 2:19eyes shining. "You know I'd never try to
- 2:20come between you two." Her fingers found
- 2:22the necklace again. Everyone saw it. I
- 2:23set my phone on top of the pot and
- 2:24pressed play. Her own voice filled the
- 2:26room. "He'll dump her by Monday and
- 2:27guess who'll be right there." Then that
- 2:28laugh. "I'm one of the guys they never
- 2:29see it coming." Every guy at that table
- 2:31saw it now. Caleb stood up. "15 years,
- 2:33Kenz." Then he grabbed my jacket and
- 2:34held it open for me. One by one, the
- 2:36guys grabbed their stuff. Theo stopped
- 2:37at the door. "Poker nights at my place
- 2:39from now on." Kenzie sat alone at her
- 2:40own table, staring at chips that didn't
- 2:42matter anymore, her eyes filling up. I
- 2:43looked back from the doorway. "Don't
- 2:44cry, Kenzie. Guys hate drama."
