- 0:15you. Enjoy.
- 0:1816-year-old Mandy has lived her whole
- 0:20life without her mother. Raised by her
- 0:22grandmother while Ashley partied away
- 0:24her 20s. Now Ashley's pregnant again,
- 0:27and she's desperate for a second chance.
- 0:29She invites Mandy to stay with her. But
- 0:32when a package arrives with the wrong
- 0:33items, Ashley gets an idea. What if she
- 0:36could raise her first daughter all over
- 0:38again? What starts with a simple bottle
- 0:41feeding becomes a journey neither of
- 0:43them expected? One that will transform
- 0:45them both in ways that blur the line
- 0:47between healing and obsession. Chapter
- 0:501. The invitation.
- 0:53The town home smelled like vanilla
- 0:55candles and fresh paint. Mandy dropped
- 0:58her duffel bag in the entryway and
- 0:59looked around, taking in the staged
- 1:01perfection of her mother's life. The
- 1:04cream colored sofa with its carefully
- 1:06arranged throw pillows. The framed
- 1:08photos of Ashley and her husband on some
- 1:10beach somewhere. The kitchen island that
- 1:12looked like it had never seen a real
- 1:14meal. "You can take the guest room
- 1:16upstairs," Ashley said, hovering near
- 1:18the stairs. She was 29 but looked
- 1:21younger. Her blonde hair and a high
- 1:23ponytail, wearing yoga pants and an
- 1:25oversized sweater that made her look
- 1:27like she'd just stepped out of an
- 1:29athleisure catalog. I changed the sheets
- 1:32this morning. Mandy nodded and grabbed
- 1:34her bag. She'd agreed to come because
- 1:36her grandmother had insisted, "Give your
- 1:39mother a chance, sweetie." But
- 1:41everything in her wanted to turn around
- 1:43and go back to the house she'd grown up
- 1:45in where things made sense and no one
- 1:48pretended the past didn't exist. So
- 1:51Ashley said trailing behind her up the
- 1:53stairs. I have some news. Mandy kept
- 1:57walking. [snorts]
- 1:58I'm pregnant. It's a girl. Mandy stopped
- 2:02at the top of the stairs, her hand tight
- 2:04on the railing. Of course she was. Of
- 2:07course, Ashley got to start over with a
- 2:09clean slate, a new daughter who wouldn't
- 2:11remember all the years she wasn't there.
- 2:14"Congratulations,"
- 2:16Mandy said flatly and disappeared into
- 2:18the guest room.
- 2:20"The first few days passed in careful
- 2:22avoidance. Ashley's husband, David, was
- 2:25somewhere in the Bay Area for work, and
- 2:27it was just the two of them in the town
- 2:29home, circling each other like
- 2:30strangers. Mandy texted her friends
- 2:33constantly. Made plans to meet them at
- 2:35the beach, at the mall, anywhere that
- 2:38wasn't here. I need you home by 6:00
- 2:40tonight, Ashley said on the third day,
- 2:42standing in the kitchen doorway while
- 2:44Mandy grabbed her keys. I want to start
- 2:46working on the nursery, and I'd really
- 2:48like your help. I have plans. Mandy.
- 2:52Ashley's voice sharpened. You've been
- 2:54going out every single day. I invited
- 2:56you here so we could spend time
- 2:58together. You invited me here so you
- 3:00could feel better about yourself before
- 3:02baby number two shows up. Mandy shot
- 3:04back. She didn't wait for a response,
- 3:07just walked out and let the door close
- 3:08behind her. But at 6:30, when she still
- 3:11wasn't home, Ashley texted, "Please come
- 3:14back. We need to talk." Mandy came home
- 3:17at 8. Ashley was sitting on the couch,
- 3:20the vanilla candle flickering on the
- 3:21coffee table, her hands folded in her
- 3:23lap. She looked smaller than usual, less
- 3:26put together.
- 3:27Sit down, she said quietly. I'm tired.
- 3:33Sit
- 3:35down.
- 3:36Mandy sat on the opposite end of the
- 3:38couch, arms crossed. Ashley took a
- 3:41breath. I know you're angry with me.
- 3:44Wow, really insightful.
- 3:46Mandy, please. Ashley's voice cracked
- 3:49slightly. I'm trying. Trying? Mandy's
- 3:52voice rose. You didn't try for 16 years.
- 3:56You left me with grandma while you went
- 3:58out and did whatever the hell you
- 3:59wanted. And now you want me to come help
- 4:01you paint a nursery for the daughter
- 4:03you'll actually show up for. That's not
- 4:06fair.
- 4:08It's completely fair. Manny was standing
- 4:10now, her whole body shaking. Do you know
- 4:13what it was like growing up without you?
- 4:15Watching other girls with their moms at
- 4:17school events, at birthdays, everywhere,
- 4:21and you were just gone. living your life
- 4:24like I didn't exist.
- 4:27Ashley's eyes filled with tears. I was a
- 4:29mess, Bandy. I was 19 and terrified, and
- 4:33I didn't know how to be a mother.
- 4:35So, you just chose not to be one. The
- 4:38silence hung heavy between them. Ashley
- 4:41wiped her eyes with the back of her
- 4:42hand, her shoulders trembling. "You're
- 4:45right," she whispered. "You're
- 4:47absolutely right. I abandon you. I let
- 4:50my own mother raise you because I was
- 4:52too selfish and too scared to do it
- 4:53myself and I can't take that back. I
- 4:56can't give you those years back. She
- 4:59looked up at Mandy, tears streaming down
- 5:01her face. But I'm here now. I want to
- 5:04try. I want to be your mom if you'll let
- 5:06me. Mandy felt something crack open
- 5:09inside her chest. Something hot and
- 5:11painful and desperate. She wanted to
- 5:14yell more to make Ashley hurt the way
- 5:16she'd hurt for so long. But she also
- 5:19wanted more than anything for her mom to
- 5:22mean it this time. "It's too late,"
- 5:25Mandy said. But her voice had no
- 5:27conviction in it. "Maybe," Ashley said
- 5:30softly. "But I have to try anyway."
- 5:34Mandy turned away, heading back toward
- 5:35the stairs. She paused at the bottom
- 5:38step, her hand on the railing. "I'll
- 5:40help with the nursery tomorrow," she
- 5:42said without turning around. "But don't
- 5:44think that fixes anything."
- 5:46I know, Ashley said. Mandy went upstairs
- 5:49and closed the door to the guest room.
- 5:51She sat on the edge of the bed in the
- 5:53dark, her phone in her hand, and tried
- 5:55to ignore the part of her that wanted to
- 5:57go back downstairs and ask her mom to
- 5:59hold her. That night, Ashley couldn't
- 6:02sleep. She lay in bed staring at the
- 6:04ceiling, thinking about the look on
- 6:06Mandy's face. The anger, yes, but
- 6:09underneath it, the longing. The same
- 6:11longing Ashley felt. this aching need to
- 6:14bridge a gap that felt impossibly wide.
- 6:17She'd missed everything. First steps,
- 6:20first words, first days of school. She'd
- 6:22missed her daughter's entire childhood.
- 6:25And now Mandy was nearly grown,
- 6:27hardened, and distant and unreachable.
- 6:30But maybe, Ashley thought, maybe there
- 6:32was still a way to fix this. Some way to
- 6:35go back and do it right this time. To
- 6:37give Mandy what she'd never had, to fill
- 6:40that empty space between them. She
- 6:42didn't know how yet, but tomorrow she
- 6:45would figure it out. Chapter 2. The
- 6:48wrong order.
- 6:50The next morning, Ashley woke to the
- 6:52sound of a delivery truck rumbling away
- 6:54from the town home. She pulled on her
- 6:56robe and padded downstairs, finding a
- 6:58large Amazon box on the front porch.
- 7:01She'd forgotten she'd even placed the
- 7:03order. It had been late at night 2 weeks
- 7:05ago when she couldn't sleep and was
- 7:07scrolling through baby supplies on her
- 7:08phone. She brought the box inside and
- 7:11set it on the kitchen counter, using
- 7:13scissors to slice through the tape. The
- 7:15nursery project had become her obsession
- 7:17lately, a way to prove to herself that
- 7:20this time would be different. This time
- 7:22she'd be ready. This time she'd be the
- 7:25mother she should have been all along.
- 7:27Mandy came downstairs an hour later,
- 7:29still in her pajamas, hair messy from
- 7:32sleep. She looked younger like this,
- 7:34Ashley thought, less guarded.
- 7:36Morning, Ashley said too brightly. Want
- 7:39some breakfast? I can make pancakes.
- 7:41Just coffee, Mandy said, heading for the
- 7:43curig. Ashley turned back to the box,
- 7:46pulling out items one by one. BPA free
- 7:50bottles. Good pacifiers and soft
- 7:52pastels. Perfect. She pulled out a
- 7:55onesie and frowned. It was enormous.
- 7:58Easily a 12-mon size, maybe bigger.
- 8:01She'd ordered newborn. She was sure
- 8:03she'd ordered newborn. She pulled out
- 8:06more clothing, all of it too large.
- 8:08Booties that would swallow a newborn's
- 8:10feet. Mittens meant for a much older
- 8:13baby. "What's wrong?" Mandy asked,
- 8:16coffee cup in hand. "I ordered the wrong
- 8:19sizes." Ashley held up the onesie. "This
- 8:22is way too big for a newborn."
- 8:25Mandy shrugged. "Return it?" "Yeah,"
- 8:29Ashley said absently, pulling out the
- 8:31last item. A bulk package of Pampers,
- 8:33size eight. Her stomach dropped. Size
- 8:36eight. Those weren't for infants. Those
- 8:39were for She stared at the package. 72
- 8:43diapers neatly stacked in their plastic
- 8:45wrapping. She must have been exhausted
- 8:48that night, clicking through options
- 8:49without really looking. "Size eight was
- 8:52for toddlers, for preschoolers, for
- 8:55Those are huge," Mandy said, leaning
- 8:57over to look. "Mom, what were you
- 8:59thinking?"
- 9:01Ashley felt heat rise to her cheeks. I
- 9:04was tired. I must have clicked the wrong
- 9:06thing. She pulled out her phone and
- 9:08called Amazon customer service, already
- 9:11knowing what they'd say. After 15
- 9:13minutes of hold music and explaining the
- 9:15situation to a polite representative,
- 9:17she hung up. They can't take them back,
- 9:20she said. Hygiene products, they said
- 9:23final sale. That sucks, Manny said. She
- 9:26finished her coffee and rinsed the cup
- 9:28in the sink. I'm going to get ready.
- 9:30When did you want to work on the
- 9:32nursery? After lunch, Ashley said
- 9:34distractedly.
- 9:36Mandy nodded and headed back upstairs.
- 9:39Ashley stood alone in the kitchen,
- 9:40staring at the pile of wrong-sized items
- 9:43on the counter. 72 diapers, bottles,
- 9:47pacifiers, onesies. All of it useless
- 9:50for a newborn. All of it gathering dust
- 9:52until until what? She picked up one of
- 9:56the diapers, turning it over in her
- 9:58hands. It was soft, decorated with
- 10:00little cartoon animals. The tabs were
- 10:03stretchy, adjustable, made for a child
- 10:06who was potty training, or maybe a child
- 10:09who still needed them at night. Made for
- 10:11a child Mandy's size. The thought came
- 10:14unbidden, shocking in its clarity. She
- 10:17pushed it away immediately, disgusted
- 10:18with herself. That was ridiculous. Mandy
- 10:21was 16 years old, not a toddler. She was
- 10:24nearly grown. But the idea lingered,
- 10:27insistent. What if there was a way to
- 10:30give Mandy what she'd missed? Not just
- 10:32quality time, not just apologies and
- 10:35promises, but the actual experience of
- 10:38being motherthered, of being cared for,
- 10:41of being small and safe and loved.
- 10:45Ashley had read articles online. She'd
- 10:47been consuming everything she could find
- 10:49about bonding with teenage daughters,
- 10:51about repairing fractured relationships.
- 10:53Some psychologists talked about
- 10:55reparing, about going back to address
- 10:57unmet childhood needs. It was
- 11:00controversial, sure, but it was a real
- 11:02thing. People did it. She looked at the
- 11:04diaper again.
- 11:07This wasn't the same thing. This was
- 11:09different. This was strange,
- 11:13wrong, probably. Mandy would think she
- 11:16was crazy. But Mandy had agreed to let
- 11:18her help her grow up again. That's what
- 11:21Ashley had said last night. vaguely,
- 11:23carefully, and Mandy had said yes. She
- 11:27had said yes. Ashley set the diaper down
- 11:30and pressed her hands to her face. She
- 11:32was being absurd, sleepdeprived and
- 11:35hormonal and desperate. That's all this
- 11:37was. She started putting the items back
- 11:40in the box, planning to donate them
- 11:42somewhere, to a shelter, maybe somewhere
- 11:44they could actually be used. But she
- 11:46stopped halfway through. Her hands
- 11:48hovered over the pacifiers. Soft
- 11:51silicone, gentle colors, exactly the
- 11:54kind she would have used for infant
- 11:55Mandy if she'd been there. What if she
- 11:58just tried?
- 12:00Just a little, just to see. If Mandy
- 12:04said no, that would be that. Ashley
- 12:07would drop it, donate everything, never
- 12:09mention it again. But if Mandy was open
- 12:12to it, even a little bit, maybe this
- 12:15could be the bridge they needed. Maybe
- 12:17this could be the way back to each
- 12:19other.
- 12:20Ashley closed the box and carried it
- 12:22upstairs to her bedroom, tucking it in
- 12:24the back of her closet. She'd think
- 12:27about it. She'd figure out the right way
- 12:29to approach this, the right words to
- 12:31use. She had to be careful. She had to
- 12:35be smart. But maybe, just maybe, this
- 12:38was the answer she'd been looking for.
- 12:41That afternoon, they painted the nursery
- 12:43together in careful silence. Mandy
- 12:46rolled soft yellow paint onto the walls
- 12:48while Ashley taped the trim. "It wasn't
- 12:51easy between them." "Not yet." But it
- 12:54was something, a start. "Thank you for
- 12:57helping," Ashley said quietly. Mandy
- 12:59just nodded, focusing on the wall.
- 13:02Ashley watched her daughter's profile,
- 13:04the set of her jaw, the way she moved
- 13:06with such careful control, always
- 13:08holding herself together.
- 13:11Mandy had learned not to need anyone.
- 13:13She'd had to.
- 13:15Ashley wanted to undo that. She wanted
- 13:18Mandy to need her again. She thought
- 13:20about the box in her closet, about the
- 13:2372 diapers, the bottles, the soft cotton
- 13:25onesies.
- 13:27Soon, she told herself. Soon she'd find
- 13:30the right moment. Chapter 3. The tender
- 13:33moment in the first bottle.
- 13:363 days passed in an uneasy truce. Mandy
- 13:39helped with the nursery, stayed home for
- 13:41dinner, made small talk about school and
- 13:43friends. Ashley could feel her daughter
- 13:46testing the waters, watching to see if
- 13:48this version of her mother would
- 13:49disappear like all the others. On the
- 13:52fourth night, Ashley made spaghetti,
- 13:54Mandy's favorite, or at least it had
- 13:56been when she was little. She wasn't
- 13:58sure anymore. There was so much she
- 14:00didn't know. They sat across from each
- 14:02other at the dining table, the silence
- 14:04punctuated only by the sound of forks on
- 14:06plates. "This is good," Mandy said
- 14:10finally. It's grandma's recipe, Ashley
- 14:13said. She taught me how to make it back
- 14:15when she trailed off. Back when she was
- 14:19raising me, Mandy finished. Ashley set
- 14:22down her fork. Mandy, I Her voice broke.
- 14:26She'd been holding this in for days,
- 14:28weeks, years. I'm so sorry. I know I
- 14:32keep saying it, but I need you to
- 14:33understand. I was so young and so
- 14:36scared, and I made the worst decision of
- 14:39my life. I let you down in every way a
- 14:42mother can let down her child. Mandy's
- 14:44jaw tightened. She looked down at her
- 14:46plate. I missed everything, Ashley
- 14:49continued, tears streaming down her face
- 14:52now. [snorts] I missed your first steps,
- 14:54your first words, your first day of
- 14:57kindergarten. I missed all of it because
- 15:00I was selfish and stupid and I thought I
- 15:03still had time to figure it out. But
- 15:05then you were 10 and then you were 13
- 15:09and then you were 16 and I'd missed your
- 15:12entire childhood. So why now? Mandy's
- 15:16voice was thick. Why do you suddenly
- 15:18care now?
- 15:21Because I'm terrified, Ashley whispered.
- 15:23I'm having another baby and I'm
- 15:25terrified I'm going to mess her up too.
- 15:27And I look at you and I see everything I
- 15:30did wrong. Everything I can never take
- 15:32back and it's killing me. Mandy looked
- 15:35up and her eyes were wet. You really
- 15:37hurt me. I know. I used to wait for you.
- 15:42Every birthday, every Christmas, every
- 15:44stupid school event, I'd wait and think
- 15:47maybe this time you'd show up. And you
- 15:49never did. Ashley reached across the
- 15:52table, tentative. Mandy didn't pull
- 15:55away.
- 15:56I can't fix the past, Ashley said. But
- 15:59I'm here now. I want to be here. I want
- 16:02to be your mom, even if I don't deserve
- 16:04to be. Mandy's face crumpled. She stood
- 16:07up suddenly, and for a moment, Ashley
- 16:09thought she was going to leave, go
- 16:10upstairs, shut her out again. But
- 16:13instead, Mandy came around the table and
- 16:15collapsed into Ashley's arms, sobbing.
- 16:18Ashley held her, really held her for the
- 16:21first time in years. Mandy's body shook
- 16:25against hers, all that anger and grief
- 16:27and longing pouring out in waves.
- 16:30I needed you, Mandy choked out. I needed
- 16:34you so much. I know, baby. I know. I'm
- 16:38so sorry. They stayed like that for a
- 16:41long time. Both of them crying. Both of
- 16:44them holding on like they might never
- 16:45get another chance. When Mandy finally
- 16:48pulled back, her face was blotchy and
- 16:50wet. "I don't know how to do this," she
- 16:53said. "I don't know how to have a mom. I
- 16:57don't know how to be one, Ashley
- 16:59admitted. But maybe we can figure it out
- 17:01together. Mandy nodded, wiping her eyes
- 17:04with the back of her hand. I want to
- 17:07try. I really do. Thank you, Ashley
- 17:10whispered. Thank you for giving me this
- 17:12chance.
- 17:14They cleaned up dinner together in
- 17:15comfortable silence, and Mandy went
- 17:17upstairs to her room, emotionally
- 17:18exhausted. Ashley watched her go, her
- 17:21mind already turning over the
- 17:23possibilities, the way she could make
- 17:25this right. That night, Ashley couldn't
- 17:28sleep. She lay in bed thinking about the
- 17:30box in her closet, the bottles, the
- 17:32pacifiers, the onesies, the diapers.
- 17:36She'd been waiting for the right moment
- 17:37to introduce them gradually, carefully.
- 17:40But tonight, seeing Mandy so vulnerable,
- 17:43so open, Ashley felt something shift
- 17:45inside her. What if she didn't wait?
- 17:48What if she just started?
- 17:52Mandy had said she wanted to try, said
- 17:55she wanted a mother. Ashley could give
- 17:57her that. She could give her everything.
- 18:00Ashley took a shaky breath. Last night
- 18:03when we talked, when you said you wanted
- 18:05to try, I couldn't stop thinking about
- 18:08it. About all the years I missed, all
- 18:10the moments I can never get back. And I
- 18:13thought about what I'd read, about
- 18:15reparing, about going back to the
- 18:17beginning. So, you decided to treat me
- 18:20like a baby without asking me? I know. I
- 18:23know I should have asked, but I was
- 18:25afraid you'd say no. That you'd put up
- 18:27walls, that we'd never get past all that
- 18:30anger and hurt. Ashley's voice broke. I
- 18:34wanted to show you what it could be
- 18:35like, to wake up and be cared for, to
- 18:38not have to be in control of everything.
- 18:41I wanted to give you what you missed by
- 18:44humiliating me. by dressing me up like
- 18:47some kind of sick fantasy while I was
- 18:49unconscious.
- 18:51Mandy's voice was venomous. By loving
- 18:54you the way you should have been loved
- 18:56from the start.
- 18:58Ashley took a step forward. I know it
- 19:01seems crazy. I know it crossed a line,
- 19:05but Mandy, you accepted that pacifier in
- 19:08your sleep. Your body knew what it
- 19:10needed even when your mind didn't. That
- 19:13doesn't give you the right. You're
- 19:16right. It doesn't. Nothing gives me that
- 19:18right. Ashley's tears were falling
- 19:21freely now. I'm a terrible mother. I
- 19:24abandoned you for 16 years, and now I'm
- 19:26trying to force you into something
- 19:27you're not ready for. You should call
- 19:30grandma. You should leave. I don't
- 19:32deserve another chance.
- 19:34Mandy stared at her mother, chest
- 19:36heaving, torn between rage and something
- 19:39else she couldn't name. Part of her
- 19:42wanted to grab her phone and get the
- 19:43hell out of this house.
- 19:45But another part, the part that had been
- 19:48sucking that pacifier without even
- 19:49knowing it, the part that had felt
- 19:52strangely secure waking up in that
- 19:54ridiculous onesie. That part was
- 19:56curious. "What exactly did you think was
- 19:59going to happen?" Mandy asked, her voice
- 20:01hard. "I'd wake up and just be okay with
- 20:04this." "Number one, I thought you'd be
- 20:08angry, but I hoped
- 20:11I hoped you'd at least consider it.
- 20:14Consider letting me try. Try what?
- 20:17Playing house with your teenage daughter
- 20:18as your doll. Try mothering you properly
- 20:22from the beginning. Ashley's voice was
- 20:25desperate. Now let me show you just one
- 20:29thing. If you hate it, if you want to
- 20:31leave after, I'll drive you to grandma's
- 20:33myself. What thing?
- 20:37Let me feed you a bottle just once.
- 20:41Mandy let out a bitter laugh. You're out
- 20:43of your mind. Probably, but you're still
- 20:47standing here. That hit. Mandy realized
- 20:50she was still standing there in the
- 20:52onesie and diaper. Still hadn't called
- 20:54grandma. Still hadn't run. Why?
- 21:00One bottle, Ashley said softly. That's
- 21:03all in asking. See how it feels. If it's
- 21:05awful, if it's wrong, we stop
- 21:08everything. But if there's even the
- 21:10small part of you that she trailed off,
- 21:13that what that wants my mommy to feed me
- 21:15like a baby. Mandy's sarcasm was sharp,
- 21:18but there was something underneath it.
- 21:20Uncertainty.
- 21:22Longing. Yes, Ashley said simply. Mandy
- 21:26looked at herself in the mirror again.
- 21:28The pigtails, the onesie, the obvious
- 21:30bulk beneath. She looked ridiculous. She
- 21:33looked like a toddler. She also looked
- 21:36cared for. Someone had taken the time to
- 21:39dress her, to style her hair, to tuck
- 21:42her in safely. Someone had thought about
- 21:44her, wanted her, tried to give her
- 21:47something. Even if that something was
- 21:49completely insane. Fine, Mandy said
- 21:52coldly. One bottle. Then I'm changing
- 21:54and we're never talking about this
- 21:56again.
- 21:57Leaf flooded Ashley's face. Okay. Yes.
- 22:01But even as Mandy said the words,
- 22:03neither of them quite believed it
- 22:05because Mandy was still lying there.
- 22:07still letting Ashley stroke her hair,
- 22:10still feeling that strange unwanted
- 22:12peace spreading through her body.
- 22:14Finally, she sat up abrupt. Chapter 4.
- 22:18Little by Little,
- 22:20the bottle feedings became routine.
- 22:22Every night at 9:00, Mandy would come to
- 22:25Ashley's room without being asked. She'd
- 22:28climb onto the bed, settle into her
- 22:30mother's lap, and accept the bottle with
- 22:32her eyes already closing. The ritual
- 22:34grounded them both. But Ashley wanted
- 22:37more. Not more for herself. At least
- 22:40that's what she told herself. But more
- 22:42for Mandy, more ways to care for her,
- 22:45more ways to show her what it felt like
- 22:47to be loved. It started with breakfast.
- 22:51"What did you like to eat when you were
- 22:52little?" Ashley asked one morning,
- 22:54scrolling through recipes on her phone.
- 22:57Mandy looked up from her cereal. I don't
- 23:00really remember. Grandma said you loved
- 23:02her French toast, the kind with cinnamon
- 23:04and powdered sugar.
- 23:06Yeah, Mandy said slowly. I guess I did.
- 23:10The next morning, Ashley made French
- 23:12toast from scratch. She cut it into
- 23:14small squares, arranged them on a plate
- 23:16with fresh strawberries, and set it in
- 23:18front of Mandy with a shy smile. Just
- 23:21like grandma used to make, Ashley said.
- 23:24Mandy stared at the plate. The squares
- 23:26were perfectly bite-sized, exactly the
- 23:29way her grandmother had always cut them.
- 23:32Something warm expanded in her chest.
- 23:34Thank you, she said quietly and meant
- 23:37it. Ashley sat across from her watching
- 23:39her eat. I called grandma and got all
- 23:42your favorite recipes. I thought I
- 23:44thought I could make them for you. The
- 23:46things you had when you were growing up.
- 23:49Over the next week, Ashley cooked
- 23:50everything. Mac and cheese with
- 23:52breadcrumb topping, chicken nuggets
- 23:54shaped like dinosaurs, grilled cheese
- 23:57cut diagonally with tomato soup for
- 23:59dipping, foods Mandy hadn't eaten in
- 24:01years, foods that tasted like childhood.
- 24:04and safety and home. "This is really
- 24:07good," Manny said one night, working her
- 24:09way through spaghetti and meatballs.
- 24:10"The same recipe from before, but this
- 24:12time, Ashley had made the meatballs
- 24:14smaller, easier to manage." "Here,"
- 24:17Ashley said, reaching across the table.
- 24:18"Let me help." Before Mandy could
- 24:21respond, Ashley cut a meatball in half,
- 24:23then into quarters. She did the same
- 24:25with the next one. Mandy froze, her fork
- 24:28suspended in midair. "Mom, I can cut my
- 24:31own food." I know you can," Ashley said
- 24:34softly. "But let me do it anyway,
- 24:37please." There was something in her
- 24:39mother's voice, not demanding, but
- 24:41pleading, wanting. Mandy looked down at
- 24:44her plate at the carefully quartered
- 24:46meatballs, and felt that now familiar
- 24:49pull between resistance and surrender.
- 24:51"Okay," she said. After that, Ashley cut
- 24:55everything, chicken into strips,
- 24:57sandwiches into triangles, even pizza
- 25:00into manageable squares. Mandy stopped
- 25:03reaching for the knife entirely. It was
- 25:05easier to just let her mom do it. Easier
- 25:07to accept this small kindness. And it
- 25:10felt good. It felt like being taken care
- 25:13of. "What are you wearing today?" Ashley
- 25:16asked one morning, appearing in Mandy's
- 25:18doorway while she was still in her
- 25:19pajamas.
- 25:21Mandy looked at the pile of clothes on
- 25:22her chair. Jeans and a hoodie, the same
- 25:25thing she wore most days. "I don't know
- 25:28why." Let me pick something for you,
- 25:31Ashley said, already moving to Mandy's
- 25:33closet. I want to help you look nice,
- 25:37Mom.
- 25:38Please, sweetie, just for today. Ashley
- 25:41pulled out a soft pink sweater and a
- 25:43pair of leggings. These would be so
- 25:45pretty together, and it's supposed to be
- 25:47cold today. Bandy wanted to argue that
- 25:50she was 16 and could dress herself, but
- 25:53the words died in her throat. Her mom
- 25:55was looking at her with such hope, such
- 25:57eagerness to be involved. "Fine," Mandy
- 26:01said. She wore the outfit. When she came
- 26:04downstairs, Ashley beaned. "He looked
- 26:07beautiful," she said. The next morning,
- 26:10Ashley was in her room again, and the
- 26:12morning after that. Soon, Mandy stopped
- 26:15picking her own clothes entirely. She'd
- 26:17shower, come back to her room, and find
- 26:19an outfit laid out on her bed. Soft,
- 26:21comfortable things in pastels and gentle
- 26:23colors. Sweaters that were a little too
- 26:26big. Leggings that felt like a hug. She
- 26:29stopped thinking about what to wear. She
- 26:31just put on whatever her mom chose.
- 26:34"Your hair is getting so long," Ashley
- 26:36said. One afternoon, they were sitting
- 26:38on the couch together, Mandy's head
- 26:39resting against her mother's shoulder.
- 26:42"Yeah, I need to cut it." "Don't cut it.
- 26:45I love it long. Ashley ran her fingers
- 26:47through it. Can I braid it for you?
- 26:50Mandy hesitated. She hadn't had her hair
- 26:52braided since she was little, since
- 26:54grandma used to do it before school.
- 26:57Okay, she said. Ashley gathered Mandy's
- 27:00hair gently, sectioning it with
- 27:02practiced fingers. She wo it into a
- 27:04French braid, careful and slow, humming
- 27:07that same wordless tune she used during
- 27:09bottle feedings.
- 27:11When she was done, she tied it with a
- 27:13ribbon from the baby supplies. Soft,
- 27:16pink, silky.
- 27:18There, Ashley said. Perfect. Mandy
- 27:21touched the braid, feeling the tight,
- 27:22secure weave of it. It's nice. I'll do
- 27:26it every morning if you want, Ashley
- 27:27offered. And she did. Every morning
- 27:30after Mandy showered, Ashley would sit
- 27:32her down and braid her hair. Sometimes
- 27:35French braids, sometimes regular braids
- 27:37with ribbons at the end, sometimes
- 27:39pigtails that made Mandy look years
- 27:41younger. Mandy stopped doing her own
- 27:44hair. She'd come downstairs with it wet
- 27:46and Ashley would dry it, brush it, style
- 27:48it. The time they spent together each
- 27:50morning became sacred. 15 minutes where
- 27:53Mandy sat still and let her mother's
- 27:55hands work through her hair while they
- 27:57talked about small things, easy things.
- 28:00"You're so good at this," Mandy said one
- 28:03morning.
- 28:04I practice, Ashley admitted, on
- 28:06grandma's old doll heads when I was
- 28:08pregnant with you. I wanted to be ready.
- 28:10Her voice grew quiet. I just never got
- 28:13to use it. Mandy reached back and
- 28:15squeezed her mother's hand. You're using
- 28:18it now. The changes were gradual enough
- 28:20that Mandy didn't notice how much she'd
- 28:23given over until one morning she woke up
- 28:25and realized she wasn't dressing
- 28:27herself. She wasn't styling her own
- 28:29hair. [snorts] She wasn't cutting her
- 28:31own food. She was letting her mother do
- 28:33everything, and she liked it.
- 28:37She liked the way Ashley's face lit up
- 28:39when she put on the chosen outfit
- 28:41without complaint. She liked sitting
- 28:43still while her hair was braided,
- 28:45feeling her mother's gentle fingers
- 28:47against her scalp. She liked eating
- 28:49dinner without having to think about
- 28:51anything except the food in front of
- 28:52her.
- 28:53>> She liked being taken care of. That
- 28:56night, during their bottle feeding,
- 28:58Mandy looked up at her mother. Thank
- 29:00you, she said quietly.
- 29:03For what, little one? For all of it. The
- 29:07food, the clothes, everything. Ashley
- 29:12smiled.
- 29:13Chapter 5. The pacifier.
- 29:172 weeks into their new routine, Ashley
- 29:19noticed something. During their nightly
- 29:22bottle feedings, Mandy would continue
- 29:23making small sucking motions even after
- 29:26the bottle was empty. Her lips pursing
- 29:28reflexively as if searching for
- 29:30something to hold on to. Ashley
- 29:32recognized the instinct. She'd seen it
- 29:35in baby videos, read about it in
- 29:36parenting books during her pregnancy.
- 29:39The need to suck for comfort, for self
- 29:41soothing. Mandy needed a pacifier. The
- 29:45thought should have seemed absurd, a
- 29:4616-year-old with a pacifier. But after
- 29:49everything else, it felt like the
- 29:50natural next step. Ashley had watched
- 29:53her daughter transform over the past
- 29:55weeks, softening and opening in ways
- 29:57that seemed impossible at first. The
- 30:00bottle had unlocked something. Maybe the
- 30:02pacifier would unlock more. She waited
- 30:05for the right moment. It came on a
- 30:08Friday night. Mandy had been stressed
- 30:10all day about an exam, snapping at her
- 30:12phone, pacing the kitchen. At dinner,
- 30:15Ashley had cut her chicken into even
- 30:17smaller pieces than usual, and Mandy had
- 30:19eaten mechanically, barely tasting it.
- 30:22"You seem tense, sweetie," Ashley said
- 30:25as they cleaned up together. "It's just
- 30:27school stuff. I'm fine." But she wasn't
- 30:30fine. Ashley could see it in the tight
- 30:32set of her shoulders, the way she kept
- 30:34chewing on her bottom lip. That night,
- 30:37when Mandy came to Ashley's room for
- 30:39their feeding, she curled into her
- 30:41mother's lap with a heavy sigh.
- 30:44Long day? Ashley asked, stroking. Need
- 30:46to soo yourself. I can see it. The way
- 30:49you keep sucking even after the bottle's
- 30:51empty. The way you bite your lip when
- 30:53you're anxious. This will help. It's for
- 30:57babies. It's for my daughter who needs
- 31:00comfort. Ashley held it up between them.
- 31:03Just try it tonight. If you hate it, we
- 31:06never mention it again. Mandy looked at
- 31:08the pacifier, then at her mother's face.
- 31:11She thought about how good the bottle
- 31:13felt, how the rhythmic sucking quieted
- 31:16her racing thoughts. She thought about
- 31:18how much she'd already given over to her
- 31:20mother, her clothes, her hair, her
- 31:23meals. What was one more thing? Just
- 31:26tonight, she said. Ashley smiled. Just
- 31:29tonight. She brought the pacifier to
- 31:32Mandy's liped in her mother's arms. With
- 31:34nothing to worry about, nothing to
- 31:37control. She'd never felt anything like
- 31:40this. this complete surrender to
- 31:42comfort. Time dissolved. She didn't know
- 31:45if she'd been there for 5 minutes or 50.
- 31:48All she knew was the pacifier in her
- 31:50mouth, her mother's hand in her hair,
- 31:52and the deep bone level piece spreading
- 31:54through her body. Finally, Ashley
- 31:57shifted slightly.
- 31:59I think you should go to bed, sweetie.
- 32:01You're falling asleep on me. Mandy made
- 32:03a small protesting sound, not wanting to
- 32:06move, not wanting this to end. You can
- 32:09keep it, Ashley said softly. The
- 32:11pacifier. Take it with you. Mandy's eyes
- 32:15opened. Really? If you want it.
- 32:19Mandy sat up slowly, the pacifier still
- 32:22in her mouth. She felt dazed, drunk on
- 32:25comfort. She looked at her reflection in
- 32:27the mirror across the room, her braided
- 32:29hair, her soft pink pajamas, the
- 32:31pacifier between her lips, and barely
- 32:33recognized herself. She should have felt
- 32:36embarrassed, ashamed, ridiculous,
- 32:39but she just felt
- 32:41peaceful. "Thank you," she said around
- 32:44the pacifier,, the words slightly
- 32:46muffled. She went to her room and
- 32:48climbed into bed, keeping the pacifier
- 32:51in her mouth. She lay in the dark,
- 32:53sucking steadily, and felt her whole
- 32:55body relax into the mattress. Within
- 32:58minutes, she was asleep, the deepest,
- 33:00most restful sleep she'd had in years.
- 33:04In the morning, Mandy woke with the
- 33:06pacifier still in her mouth. She'd
- 33:08unconsciously kept it there all night,
- 33:10her jaw slightly sore from the constant
- 33:11sucking. She took it out and stared at
- 33:14it, sitting up in bed. This was strange.
- 33:17This was definitely strange. She was a
- 33:20teenager sleeping with a pacifier like a
- 33:22toddler. But she had slept so well. No
- 33:25anxiety dreams, no waking up at 3:00
- 33:28a.m. with her mind racing, just deep,
- 33:31dreamless sleep. She heard her mother
- 33:34moving around downstairs and felt a
- 33:36flutter of nervousness. Would Ashley
- 33:38expect her to use it again? Would this
- 33:40become part of their routine like
- 33:42everything else? When she came
- 33:44downstairs, the pacifier hidden in her
- 33:46pajama pocket. Ashley was making
- 33:48pancakes shaped like hearts.
- 33:51Good morning, sweetie. How did you
- 33:53sleep? Really good, actually. Ashley
- 33:57smiled knowingly. The pacifier helped.
- 34:00Mandy felt her cheeks heat. Yeah, it
- 34:02did.
- 34:04I'm glad. Ashley flipped a pancake. You
- 34:07can use it whenever you need it. During
- 34:08the day, at night, whenever you want to
- 34:11feel calm. I won't judge you. Mandy
- 34:14nodded, relief flooding through her. She
- 34:16pulled the pacifier from her pocket and
- 34:18set it on the counter, not quite ready
- 34:20to put it back in her mouth, but not
- 34:22wanting to hide it either. They ate
- 34:24breakfast together, and Ashley cut
- 34:26Mandy's pancakes into small squares
- 34:28without asking. When Mandy went to get
- 34:30dressed, she found a soft lavender
- 34:32sweater and white leggings laid out on
- 34:34her bed. When she came back downstairs
- 34:36with wet hair, Ashley braided it into
- 34:38pigtails tied with matching lavender
- 34:40ribbons.
- 34:42The routine continued, familiar and
- 34:44comforting. That afternoon, Mandy was on
- 34:46the couch doing homework when the stress
- 34:48started building again. Equations that
- 34:50made no sense, a history paper she
- 34:52hadn't started. She could feel the
- 34:54anxiety creeping back, tightening her
- 34:56chest. Without thinking, she reached for
- 34:59the pacifier she'd left on the coffee
- 35:01table. She slipped it into her mouth and
- 35:04immediately felt the tension ease. She
- 35:06kept working, the pacifier bobbing
- 35:09gently as she read and wrote, and found
- 35:11that her thoughts flowed easier with it
- 35:13there. When Ashley came into the living
- 35:16room an hour later, she found Mandy
- 35:18curled up on the couch, pacifier in
- 35:20mouth, completely absorbed in her
- 35:22textbook.
- 35:23How's the homework going, little one?
- 35:26Mandy looked up, suddenly aware of the
- 35:28pacifier. She started to take it out,
- 35:30but Ashley shook her head. Leave it. You
- 35:33look comfortable. So Mandy left it in,
- 35:36answering her mother's questions around
- 35:38it, getting used to the feeling of
- 35:40talking with it in her mouth. By dinner
- 35:42time, the pacifier felt less like a
- 35:44strange new addition and more like
- 35:46something that had always been there,
- 35:48something it on the coffee table while
- 35:50she watched TV. She used it when she
- 35:53studied, when she felt anxious, when she
- 35:55wanted to feel close to her mother, even
- 35:57when Ashley was in another room. Ashley
- 36:00noticed and said nothing. She just
- 36:02smiled and kissed Mandy's forehead
- 36:03whenever she saw the pacifier between
- 36:05her daughter's lips. 3 weeks after the
- 36:08pacifier became routine, Ashley decided
- 36:10it was time for the next step.
- 36:14Mandy felt the alternatives. Overalls in
- 36:17pale denim with heart-shaped buttons,
- 36:19jumper dresses in pastel colors,
- 36:22sweaters with cute animal faces knitted
- 36:24into them. Skirts with built-in shorts
- 36:27underneath paired with striped tights.
- 36:29"This is kind of
- 36:32young, isn't it?" Mandy said one
- 36:35morning, looking at the outfit laid out
- 36:36on her bed. A lavender jumper dress with
- 36:39white flowers embroidered on the
- 36:41pockets. Ashley appeared in the doorway,
- 36:43already dressed for the day. It's cute.
- 36:46That's different from young. It looks
- 36:49like something a kid would wear. It
- 36:51looks like something a girl who's loved
- 36:53would wear. Ashley came closer, picking
- 36:55up the dress. You don't have to wear it
- 36:58if you don't want to, but I think you'd
- 37:00look beautiful in it. Mandy chewed her
- 37:03lip, a habit she'd mostly replaced with
- 37:05the pacifier, but old patterns died
- 37:08hard. The dress was cute and soft, and
- 37:12her mother had picked it out
- 37:13specifically for her. Had probably spent
- 37:16time imagining how she'd look in it.
- 37:18"Okay," Mandy said. She wore the jumper
- 37:22dress. Ashley paired it with a white
- 37:24long sleeve shirt underneath and white
- 37:25tights with little hearts on them.
- 37:27[snorts] When Mandy looked in the
- 37:28mirror, she saw someone much younger
- 37:30than 16 staring back. But she also saw
- 37:33someone who looked cared for, loved,
- 37:36pretty. You look perfect, Ashley
- 37:38breathed and braided Mandy's hair into
- 37:40two plates with lavender ribbons.
- 37:43At first, Mandy only wore the cute core
- 37:45outfits at home, but gradually she
- 37:47started wearing them out, too. To the
- 37:49store with her mom, to the park, even
- 37:52once to meet her friends at a coffee
- 37:53shop. Her friends raised eyebrows, but
- 37:56didn't comment. Maybe they thought it
- 37:58was just a phase, a new style Mandy was
- 38:00trying out. They didn't know about the
- 38:02bottles, the pacifiers, the baths, the
- 38:06way Mandy had gradually handed over
- 38:08every aspect of her independence to her
- 38:10mother. And Mandy didn't tell them. The
- 38:14clothing kept evolving. Dresses got
- 38:16shorter, designs got more playful.
- 38:18Ashley bought her overalls with snaps at
- 38:21the crotch, easier for bathroom breaks,
- 38:23she explained. Though Mandy wasn't sure
- 38:25why that mattered. shirts with cartoon
- 38:27characters, sweaters with ears on the
- 38:29hood, socks with grips on the bottom.
- 38:32One morning, Mandy found a onesie laid
- 38:34out on her bed. It wasn't like the ones
- 38:37Ashley had accidentally ordered. Those
- 38:39were obviously for babies. This one was
- 38:42bigger, clearly meant for someone
- 38:44Mandy's size. White with little yellow
- 38:47ducks on it, snaps running down between
- 38:49the legs. "Mom," Mandy called out,
- 38:52holding it up. Ashley came to the
- 38:54doorway, her expression hopeful and
- 38:56nervous. I thought you could wear it
- 38:58around the house just for comfort. It's
- 39:00really soft. It's a onesie. It's
- 39:04comfortable clothing that keeps you
- 39:05cozy. That's all. Ashley stepped closer.
- 39:09Try it on, please. Just once. Mandy held
- 39:13the onesie against herself. It did look
- 39:15soft and warm, and it wasn't like anyone
- 39:19would see her in it. Just her mom here
- 39:21at home. Just around the house, she
- 39:24said.
- 39:25Just around the house, Ashley agreed.
- 39:28Mandy changed into it. The fabric was
- 39:30incredibly soft, some kind of cotton
- 39:33bamboo blend that felt like heaven
- 39:35against her skin. The snaps between her
- 39:37legs felt strange, more exposing than
- 39:40regular clothes, but also somehow
- 39:44secure. She looked at herself in the
- 39:46mirror. She looked like an oversized
- 39:48toddler. But she also looked
- 39:50comfortable, cared for, like someone's
- 39:53baby.
- 39:54"Oh, sweetie," Ashley said when Mandy
- 39:57came downstairs. Her eyes were shining.
- 40:00"You look so precious." Mandy felt her
- 40:03cheeks heat, but she didn't change. She
- 40:05wore the onesie all day. Through
- 40:07breakfast, pancakes cut into small
- 40:09squares. Through morning cartoons on the
- 40:11couch with her pacifier, through lunch,
- 40:14grilled cheese with tomato soup for
- 40:16dipping. It was the most comfortable
- 40:18she'd felt in clothes in a long time.
- 40:21That night, after her bath, Ashley held
- 40:23up another onesie. This one pink with
- 40:26white stars. "For bed," she suggested.
- 40:30Mandy nodded. She slept in the onesie,
- 40:33the snaps keeping everything in place,
- 40:35the fabric soft against her lotion skin.
- 40:38When she woke up in the morning, she
- 40:40didn't want to take it off. Ashley
- 40:42bought more. Soon, Mandy had a whole
- 40:45drawer full of them in different colors
- 40:46and patterns. She wore them more often
- 40:49than regular clothes when she was home.
- 40:51They became normal, expected, just
- 40:54another part of how Ashley took care of
- 40:56her. The onesies led to other things.
- 40:59Footy pajamas with attached feet,
- 41:01shortalls that snapped at the crotch
- 41:03like the overalls, rompers that made her
- 41:06look even younger. Each item pushed the
- 41:09boundary a little further. And each time
- 41:11Mandy accepted it. Because with each new
- 41:13piece of clothing, each new concession
- 41:16to being young and cared for, she felt
- 41:18more connected to her mother, more
- 41:21loved, more like she finally belonged to
- 41:25someone. One afternoon, Ashley was
- 41:27folding laundry in the living room while
- 41:29Mandy colored in a coloring book on the
- 41:30floor. It wasn't homework. It was an
- 41:33actual children's coloring book Ashley
- 41:34had bought with simple pictures of
- 41:36animals and flowers. Mandy had her
- 41:39pacifier in and was humming softly,
- 41:41completely absorbed.
- 41:44Ashley watched her daughter dressed in a
- 41:46yellow onesie with little bees on it,
- 41:48her hair and pigtails, the pacifier
- 41:50bobbing as she carefully stayed inside
- 41:52the lines and felt overwhelmed with love
- 41:55and something else. Satisfaction,
- 41:58completion. This was what she'd wanted.
- 42:02This was her baby girl finally letting
- 42:04herself be cared for. "Sweetie," Ashley
- 42:08said softly. Mandy looked up, pacifier
- 42:11still in her mouth. "I'm so proud of
- 42:14you. You know that, right? Proud of how
- 42:16brave you've been letting me love you
- 42:18like this."
- 42:20Mandy smiled around her pacifier. "I
- 42:22like it, Mommy." It was the first time
- 42:25she'd said it out loud. "Mommy, not
- 42:27mom." The word hung in the air between
- 42:29them. Ashley's breath caught. "Say that
- 42:33again," "Mommy," Mandy repeated, softer
- 42:37this time, almost shy. Ashley crossed
- 42:39the room and pulled Mandy into her arms,
- 42:42holding her tight. "My baby girl, my
- 42:45sweet, precious baby girl." Mandy buried
- 42:48her face in her mother's shoulder,
- 42:50pacifier pressed between them, and felt
- 42:53completely, utterly safe. She was
- 42:56mommy's little one. Chapter 7. more
- 42:59infantile clothing.
- 43:02The word mommy changed everything. Once
- 43:05Mandy said it, she couldn't go back to
- 43:06mom. It would have felt wrong, too
- 43:09distant, too formal. Ashley was mommy
- 43:12now. The person who fed her, bathed her,
- 43:14dressed her, loved her in ways that made
- 43:17Mandy feel small and safe and cherished.
- 43:21And mommy had more ideas. It started at
- 43:24breakfast one morning. Mandy was eating
- 43:26oatmeal cut with milk to make it easier
- 43:28to swallow, sweetened with honey and
- 43:30berries, when a drop fell from her spoon
- 43:32onto her yellow onesie. "Oh, sweetie,"
- 43:36Ashley said immediately, reaching for a
- 43:38napkin. She dabbed at the stain,
- 43:40frowning. "These onesies are so pretty.
- 43:43I hate seeing them get messy." Mandy
- 43:46shrugged around her pacifier. She'd
- 43:48taken to keeping it in her mouth, even
- 43:49during meals now, only removing it to
- 43:52eat, then putting it right back. That
- 43:54afternoon, Ashley came home from
- 43:56shopping with a bag from a specialty
- 43:58store. She pulled out something soft and
- 44:00colorful. A bib. Not a small baby bib,
- 44:03but one sized for someone bigger with
- 44:06adjustable snaps and a catch pocket at
- 44:08the bottom. For meal times, Ashley said,
- 44:11holding it up. It was pastel pink with
- 44:13white polka dots and the words mommy's
- 44:16girl embroidered across the front. Mandy
- 44:19stared at it. A bib to keep your pretty
- 44:22clothes clean. That's all it's for.
- 44:25Mommy, I'm not that messy. You got
- 44:28oatmeal on your onesie this morning, and
- 44:31yesterday you dripped soup on your
- 44:32shirt. Ashley's voice was gentle but
- 44:35firm. This just makes sense, little one.
- 44:38You don't have to worry about making a
- 44:39mess, and I don't have to worry about
- 44:41your clothes getting ruined. Mandy
- 44:43looked at the bib at the words, "Mommy's
- 44:45girl," that would sit right across her
- 44:47chest. It was so obviously babyish, so
- 44:52explicitly declaring what she was
- 44:53becoming. But the words also made
- 44:56something warm bloom in her chest.
- 44:58Mommy's girl. That's what she was.
- 45:01That's what she wanted to be.
- 45:05"Okay," she said quietly. At dinner,
- 45:08Ashley tied the bib around Mandy's neck,
- 45:11adjusting the snap so it fit properly.
- 45:14Mandy felt the weight of it against her
- 45:15chest, the catch pocket sitting just
- 45:18below. She felt incredibly
- 45:20self-conscious as she ate her spaghetti,
- 45:22cut into small pieces, of course. But
- 45:24Ashley smiled at her with such love that
- 45:27the embarrassment faded. And when a
- 45:29piece of spaghetti did slip from her
- 45:31fork and land in the catch pocket, Mommy
- 45:33just laughed softly and said, "See,
- 45:36that's what it's for." The bibs
- 45:39multiplied. Soon Mandy had a collection.
- 45:41Different colors, different patterns,
- 45:43different sayings. Little one, sweet
- 45:46girl, baby girl. Each one announced what
- 45:48she was, what she'd become. She wore
- 45:51them at every meal. She stopped worrying
- 45:53about spilling, stopped being careful
- 45:55with her fork. Why bother when the bib
- 45:57would catch everything. She could just
- 45:59eat and let mommy take care of the rest.
- 46:02With the bibs came other items. Ashley
- 46:04introduced sippy cups. First for juice
- 46:06during the day, then for water with
- 46:08meals. Easier than regular cups, she
- 46:10explained. No spills. Mley accepted them
- 46:13without question. The sippy cups had
- 46:15handles and spouts and made her feel
- 46:17very young, but they were also
- 46:19convenient. She could carry them around
- 46:21the house, drink while watching TV,
- 46:24never worry about spilling on the couch.
- 46:26Then came the high chair. "Not a real
- 46:29high chair," Ashley clarified when Mandy
- 46:31saw it set up in the kitchen. It's just
- 46:33a booster seat with a tray so you can
- 46:35sit at the counter with me while I cook
- 46:37and you have a place for your sippy cup
- 46:39and your coloring books. It looked like
- 46:41a high chair to Mandy. Elevated seat
- 46:43with a safety strap and a plastic tray
- 46:45that locked into place. But Ashley was
- 46:48already padding it encouragingly and
- 46:50Mandy found herself climbing into it.
- 46:52Ashley fastened the safety strap just so
- 46:55you don't lean too far and fall and
- 46:57locked the tray in place. Mandy sat
- 46:59there with her sippy cup, her coloring
- 47:01book, and her pacifier, and felt more
- 47:04like a toddler than ever. But mommy was
- 47:06right there cooking dinner and chatting
- 47:08with her. And it felt good to be close,
- 47:11to be contained and safe. Small squares
- 47:13arranged in a smiley face with
- 47:15strawberry eyes and a banana smile.
- 47:17"Good morning, baby girl," Ashley said
- 47:20immediately, tying a bib around Mandy's
- 47:22neck, the pink one with mommy's girl on
- 47:24it. "How are you feeling?"
- 47:27Mandy climbed into her booster seat and
- 47:29let mommy fasten the strap. Better, she
- 47:32said around her pacifier. She took it
- 47:34out to eat. "Thank you for last night."
- 47:37"Always, sweetie. Always." Ashley kissed
- 47:40the top of her head. "I want to talk to
- 47:43you about something after breakfast,
- 47:44okay? Nothing bad, just something I've
- 47:47been thinking about." Mandy felt a
- 47:49flutter of nervousness, but nodded. She
- 47:51ate her French toast slowly, using her
- 47:53fingers more than her fork, not worrying
- 47:55about the syrup on her chin because
- 47:57mommy would wipe it away. After
- 47:59breakfast, Ashley led her to the living
- 48:01room. They sat together on the couch.
- 48:03Mandy curled into her mother's side,
- 48:05pacifier back in her mouth.
- 48:07So Ashley began running her fingers
- 48:10through Mandy's hair. You've been doing
- 48:13so well with everything we've been
- 48:14trying. the bottles, the pacifiers,
- 48:18letting me dress you and feed you. I'm
- 48:20so proud of how open you've been." Mandy
- 48:23sucked her pacifier and waited. "I've
- 48:26been reading more about bonding and
- 48:27regression therapy," Ashley continued.
- 48:30"And there's something else that
- 48:31sometimes helps. Something that might
- 48:34seem scary at first, but could actually
- 48:36be really freeing for you." "What is
- 48:39it?" Mandy asked, though the pacifier
- 48:41muffled her words. Ashley stood and
- 48:44retrieved something from behind the
- 48:46couch. A package of training pants. They
- 48:49looked almost like regular underwear,
- 48:51but thicker with cartoon characters on
- 48:53them and elastic waistbands.
- 48:56These are training pants, Ashley said
- 48:58carefully. They're for protection just
- 49:01in case. Mandy sat up straighter, her
- 49:03pacifier falling from her mouth.
- 49:06Protection from what?
- 49:08From accidents.
- 49:10Ashley sat back down holding the
- 49:12package.
- 49:13Sweetie, you're so relaxed now when we
- 49:15do our routines. You let go of so much
- 49:18control when I'm taking care of you. And
- 49:21that's wonderful. That's exactly what we
- 49:23want. But sometimes when people regress
- 49:26like this, when they really let
- 49:28themselves be small and safe, accidents
- 49:31can happen. I'm not going to have
- 49:34accidents, Mandy said, her voice tight.
- 49:36I'm not a baby. I know you're not, but
- 49:39you're also not the same girl who showed
- 49:41up here a month ago. You drink from
- 49:43bottles. You sleep with a pacifier. You
- 49:46let me feed you and dress you and bathe
- 49:48you. Your body is learning to relax in
- 49:51ways it never has before. That's
- 49:54different. This is Mandy stood up,
- 49:57shaking her head. This is too far, Mom.
- 50:00Mommy. Ashley corrected gently. This is
- 50:03too far. Mandy repeated, her eyes
- 50:06filling with tears. I can't. I won't.
- 50:10Hey. Hey. Ashley stood too, reaching for
- 50:13her. Nobody's making you do anything. I
- 50:16just want you to have them just in case.
- 50:19You don't have to wear them unless you
- 50:20want to. I'm not going to want to.
- 50:23Mandy's voice cracked. I'm 16 years old.
- 50:26I don't need training pants.
- 50:29Ashley's face fell. Okay. Okay, sweetie.
- 50:32I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pushed. She
- 50:34set the package down. We can forget
- 50:36about it. She turned to walk away and
- 50:39Mandy felt something cold grip her
- 50:41chest. Mommy was leaving. Mommy was
- 50:44disappointed. Mommy thought she was
- 50:46being difficult and now she was going
- 50:48away. "Wait," Mandy said, her voice
- 50:51small. Ashley turned back. "I'm sorry,"
- 50:56Mandy whispered. "I'm sorry for yelling.
- 50:59You don't have to apologize for having
- 51:00feelings, little one. But you're upset.
- 51:03You're upset with me." The tears were
- 51:06falling now, hot and fast. You're going
- 51:08to leave again. You're going to decide
- 51:10I'm too much trouble. And Mandy. Ashley
- 51:14crossed back to her in two steps and
- 51:15pulled her close. I'm not leaving. I'm
- 51:18never leaving. You could scream at me
- 51:21every day for the rest of your life, and
- 51:23I wouldn't leave. I promise. I promise.
- 51:27Ashley held her tight. But sweetie, you
- 51:29have to understand. I'm trying to help
- 51:32you. I'm trying to give you what you
- 51:34missed. And part of what babies need is
- 51:36protection, safety, the security of
- 51:39knowing that even if something goes
- 51:40wrong, mommy will take care of it. Mandy
- 51:43sobbed into her mother's shoulder. I'm
- 51:46scared of what, baby? Of going too far.
- 51:51Of not being able to come back. Ashley
- 51:54pulled back enough to look at her. Do
- 51:56you want to come back? Manny thought
- 51:58about it. Really thought about it. Did
- 52:00she want to go back to being the girl
- 52:02who did everything herself, who trusted
- 52:04no one, who held herself together
- 52:06through sheer force of will? Or did she
- 52:09want to stay here in this soft,
- 52:11protected space where mommy made all the
- 52:13decisions and all Mandy had to do was be
- 52:16loved? "No," she admitted. "I don't want
- 52:19to come back. I like it here. I like
- 52:22being little." "Then let me take care of
- 52:25all of you," Ashley said softly. Not
- 52:28just the parts that are easy. All of
- 52:30you, even the scary parts. She picked up
- 52:34the package of training pants again.
- 52:36These are just for nighttime, just in
- 52:38case. You'll wear your regular onesie
- 52:41over them, and nobody will know except
- 52:43us. And if you wake up dry every
- 52:45morning, then we'll know you don't need
- 52:47them. But if something happens, you'll
- 52:50be protected, and I'll take care of you
- 52:54just like I take care of everything
- 52:55else. Mandy looked at the package, at
- 52:58the cartoon characters and the soft
- 53:00fabric and the implicit promise of
- 53:02surrender. Just nighttime, she asked.
- 53:06Just nighttime
- 53:08for now. And if I don't like of what she
- 53:11was wearing. How do they feel? Ashley
- 53:14asked. Weird. Puffy, but not
- 53:18uncomfortable. Mandy shifted her weight,
- 53:21testing the fit. No, not uncomfortable.
- 53:24Ashley smiled. good, not a diaper. But
- 53:28mommy was smiling at her with such love,
- 53:31such pride that Mandy couldn't bring
- 53:33herself to protest. After breakfast,
- 53:36Ashley suggested they spend the day at
- 53:38home, just the two of them. They watched
- 53:40cartoons on the couch. Mandy curled
- 53:42against me. "Can I just wear regular
- 53:45underwear during the day?" Ashley was
- 53:47quiet for a moment. "Let's see how today
- 53:50goes first, okay? If you stay dry all
- 53:53day, then yes. But if you have any
- 53:55accidents, I won't, Mandy said quickly.
- 53:59But even as she said it, she felt
- 54:00uncertain. She'd been so relaxed lately,
- 54:04so unconcerned with controlling her
- 54:05body. What if she got too absorbed in
- 54:08her coloring book and didn't notice?
- 54:10What if she was drinking from her sippy
- 54:12cup and forgot to go to the bathroom?
- 54:14The day passed slowly. Mandy stayed dry,
- 54:16but only because she was hyper aware of
- 54:18her bladder, constantly checking in with
- 54:20herself. It was exhausting this constant
- 54:23vigilance. It reminded her of the old
- 54:26days before mommy when she had to
- 54:28control everything. By dinner time, she
- 54:30was tired and cranky. She pushed away
- 54:32her plate of cutup chicken nuggets. Not
- 54:35hungry.
- 54:36"What's wrong, baby?" Ashley asked. "I'm
- 54:40tired."
- 54:42"Are you feeling okay? Do you need to
- 54:44use the potty?" The word potty made
- 54:47Mandy feel even younger, even smaller.
- 54:50No, she mumbled. But an hour later,
- 54:54curled on the couch watching TV, Mandy
- 54:56felt a warm spreading sensation before
- 54:58she even realized what was happening.
- 55:01She froze, looking down at herself in
- 55:03horror. She was wetting the diaper,
- 55:06and she couldn't stop it. The diaper
- 55:09swelled as it absorbed the wetness,
- 55:11growing warmer and heavier between her
- 55:13legs. Mandy started to cry, pulling her
- 55:16pacifier from her mouth. Mommy," she
- 55:19whimpered softly and telling Mandy how
- 55:22good she was being. "There," Ashley said
- 55:25when she was done, "All clean and dry.
- 55:27Feel better?" Mandy nodded reluctantly.
- 55:30She did feel better. The fresh diaper
- 55:32was soft and dry, and she didn't have to
- 55:35worry anymore about whether she'd make
- 55:36it to the bathroom in time. "I think,"
- 55:40Ashley said carefully, that we should
- 55:42keep you in diapers during the day, too.
- 55:44just for a while until we know you're
- 55:47fully adjusted. Mandy wanted to argue,
- 55:49but she was too tired, too overwhelmed.
- 55:52And deep down, she knew mommy was right.
- 55:55Okay, she whispered.
- 55:57"My good girl," Ashley murmured. "My
- 56:00brave, sweet baby loved, protected."
- 56:04Chapter 10. Learning to use them was
- 56:08bothering Ashley. She could see the
- 56:10tension in Mandy's face every time an
- 56:12accident happened. the surprise, the
- 56:14shame, the frustration, and she realized
- 56:16that Mandy was still fighting her body,
- 56:19still trying to control something she no
- 56:21longer needed to control. It was time
- 56:23for the next step. On Saturday morning,
- 56:26after changing Mandy into a fresh diaper
- 56:29and dressing her in a pink onesie with
- 56:31white polka dots, Ashley sat her down on
- 56:33the couch. "Sweetie, I want to talk to
- 56:36you about something." Mandy immediately
- 56:39looked worried, her pacifier bobbing
- 56:41faster. What's wrong?
- 56:44Nothing's wrong, but I've noticed that
- 56:46you still get upset when you have
- 56:48accidents. You tense up. You look
- 56:51surprised like your body is betraying
- 56:53you. Because it is, Manny said around
- 56:56her pacifier. I don't mean to. It just
- 56:59happens.
- 57:00I know, baby, and that's actually good.
- 57:03It means you're relaxed enough to let
- 57:05go. But I don't want you to feel bad
- 57:07about it anymore. Ashley pulled Mandy
- 57:10close. The diapers are there for a
- 57:12reason. They're not just for accidents.
- 57:15They're for you to use whenever you need
- 57:17to. Mandy pulled her. But I'm not a
- 57:19baby. You're my baby. And babies don't
- 57:23need to think about these things. Mandy
- 57:25felt something shift inside her. Fear
- 57:27and relief tangled together. She had
- 57:30been fighting so hard to maintain this
- 57:32last bit of control to prove she was
- 57:34still a big girl who could use the
- 57:36toilet. But what if she didn't have to?
- 57:39What if she could just let go
- 57:41completely? Trust mommy to handle
- 57:43everything. I don't know if I can, she
- 57:46whispered. Not on purpose.
- 57:49That's okay. We'll work up to it. Ashley
- 57:51kissed her forehead. But I want you to
- 57:53stop rushing to the bathroom. I want you
- 57:55to stay where you are and just let it
- 57:58happen. Can you try that for me? Mandy
- 58:01nodded slowly, putting her pacifier back
- 58:03in her mouth. An hour later, Mandy was
- 58:05sitting at the coffee table working on a
- 58:07puzzle, a simple one with big pieces
- 58:10meant for young children. She had her
- 58:12sippy cup of juice beside her and was
- 58:14completely absorbed in fitting the
- 58:16pieces together. She felt the pressure
- 58:18building in her bladder. Usually, she'd
- 58:20jump up and run to the bathroom, but
- 58:22mommy's words echoed in her head. Stay
- 58:25where you are. Let it happen. She tried.
- 58:29She really tried, but the lifetime of
- 58:32training was too strong. She stood up,
- 58:34ready to head for the bathroom. "Where
- 58:36are you going, sweetie?" Ashley asked
- 58:38from the kitchen. "I need to," Mandy
- 58:42stopped, uncertain. "You need to what?"
- 58:46"Use the bathroom." Ashley came into the
- 58:49living room, wiping her hands on a dish
- 58:50towel. "Why?" "Because I
- 58:55I have to go." "And you're wearing a
- 58:59diaper," Mandy mumbled.
- 59:02So, you can go right there, can't you?
- 59:04You don't need to stop your puzzle. You
- 59:07don't need to go anywhere. Ashley smiled
- 59:09gently. Just relax and let it happen,
- 59:12baby girl. Mommy will change you when
- 59:14you're done. Mandy stood close. I'm so
- 59:17proud of you, little one. That was a big
- 59:19step. It felt weird, Mandy admitted. But
- 59:23it felt freeing, too, didn't it? Not
- 59:25having to stop what you were doing. Not
- 59:27having to worry. Mandy thought about it.
- 59:30Yeah, kind of. It's going to get easier,
- 59:34Ashley promised. Every time you trust
- 59:36your diaper instead of running to the
- 59:38bathroom, it'll get a little easier
- 59:41until eventually you don't even think
- 59:43about it anymore. You just go when you
- 59:45need to, and mommy takes care of the
- 59:47rest. Over the next few days, Ashley
- 59:50encouraged Mandy at every opportunity.
- 59:52When Mandy started to get up during a
- 59:54cartoon, Ashley told her to stay put.
- 59:56When Mandy squirmed during coloring
- 59:58time, Ashley reminded her she didn't
- 1:00:00need to go anywhere. Ashley kissed the
- 1:00:02top of her head. That's exactly what's
- 1:00:05supposed to happen. Your body knows
- 1:00:07mommy will take care of you. You don't
- 1:00:09need to think about it anymore. Mandy
- 1:00:11felt something like loss and relief
- 1:00:13mixing together. She'd crossed a
- 1:00:15threshold. She wasn't mommy change her
- 1:00:17into a thick nighttime diaper. She
- 1:00:20didn't protest, didn't feel embarrassed
- 1:00:22anymore. This was just what happened
- 1:00:24now. This was just who she was. Mommy's
- 1:00:27baby girl in diapers full time, using
- 1:00:31them whenever she needed to. And
- 1:00:34somehow, impossibly, it felt right. What
- 1:00:37if it happens again? Then I'll take care
- 1:00:39of it again. That's what the diapers are
- 1:00:41for, sweetie. That's what mommy is for.
- 1:00:44Over the next week, it did happen again
- 1:00:47and again until Mandy's body had fully
- 1:00:50adjusted to using her diapers for
- 1:00:52everything, day and night, without
- 1:00:55thought or hesitation.
- 1:00:57She needed them now, completely truly.
- 1:01:01And Mommy was there for every change,
- 1:01:04every mess, every vulnerable moment,
- 1:01:07with nothing but love and acceptance.
- 1:01:10Chapter 11. The grandmother visits.
- 1:01:14Four weeks into full-time diapers,
- 1:01:16Mandy's life had settled into a
- 1:01:18comfortable routine. She woke up in wet
- 1:01:21or messy diapers, got changed by mommy,
- 1:01:24ate breakfast in her booster seat with
- 1:01:26her bib on, spent her days playing with
- 1:01:28toys and coloring books and watching
- 1:01:30cartoons, and never once thought about
- 1:01:33using the bathroom. She didn't need to.
- 1:01:36She had her diapers, and she had mommy.
- 1:01:39Ashley's belly was growing now. She was
- 1:01:415 months along starting the show. They'd
- 1:01:44painted the nursery together, picked out
- 1:01:45tiny clothes, assembled the crib. But
- 1:01:48instead of making Mandy feel replaced,
- 1:01:50it made her feel excited. She was going
- 1:01:52to be a big sister. She was going to
- 1:01:54help mommy take care of the baby. She
- 1:01:57didn't think about the fact that she was
- 1:01:59essentially a baby herself now. Then one
- 1:02:02Saturday morning, Ashley got a phone
- 1:02:03call. "Your grandma wants to visit," she
- 1:02:06said after hanging up. "She'll be here
- 1:02:08this afternoon.
- 1:02:10Mandy's pacifier nearly fell from her
- 1:02:12mouth. Grandma, the woman who had raised
- 1:02:16her, who knew her as the independent,
- 1:02:18self-sufficient teenager she used to be.
- 1:02:21Grandma couldn't see her like this.
- 1:02:24"No," Mandy said, panic rising. "You
- 1:02:26have to tell her not to come. Tell her
- 1:02:28we're sick or busy or Sweetie, she's
- 1:02:32your grandmother. She misses you and she
- 1:02:35wants to see how you're doing. But I
- 1:02:38can't. She can't see me. Mandy looked
- 1:02:41down at herself. She was wearing a
- 1:02:43onesie with little ducks on it. Her hair
- 1:02:45and pigtails with yellow ribbons
- 1:02:47obviously diapered underneath.
- 1:02:50Mommy, please.
- 1:02:53Ashley knelt in front of her. Baby,
- 1:02:55listen to me. Your grandma loves you.
- 1:02:58She's going to understand.
- 1:03:00Understand what? That her teenage
- 1:03:03granddaughter is dressed like a toddler
- 1:03:04and wearing diapers.
- 1:03:06that her granddaughter is healing, that
- 1:03:09she's finally getting the motherdaughter
- 1:03:11relationship she always needed. Ashley
- 1:03:14held Mandy's face in her hands. We don't
- 1:03:17have to hide who you are now, and if
- 1:03:19your grandma has a problem with it,
- 1:03:21we'll deal with it together. What if she
- 1:03:24tries to take me away? Mandy's voice was
- 1:03:27very small. What if she thinks you're
- 1:03:29hurting me and she takes me back to her
- 1:03:31house? Do you feel like I'm hurting you?
- 1:03:35No.
- 1:03:36But she might not understand. Then we'll
- 1:03:39help her understand. Ashley kissed her
- 1:03:41forehead. Do you want to change how you
- 1:03:44look when she's here? We can put you in
- 1:03:46more grownup clothes. Take the ribbons
- 1:03:48out of your hair. Mandy thought about
- 1:03:50it. Part of her desperately wanted to
- 1:03:52hide, to pretend she was still the old
- 1:03:55Mandy. But another part, a bigger part,
- 1:03:58didn't want to. She liked who she was
- 1:04:00now. She liked being mommy's baby girl.
- 1:04:04Why should she hide that?
- 1:04:06No, she said finally. I don't want to
- 1:04:08pretend. This is who I am now.
- 1:04:12Ashley's eyes filled with tears. I'm so
- 1:04:14proud of you, little one. When grandma
- 1:04:17arrived at 2:00, Ashley greeted her at
- 1:04:19the door while Mandy waited nervously in
- 1:04:21the living room, sitting on the floor
- 1:04:23with her coloring books pacifier. It's
- 1:04:25hard to explain. Ashley stepped forward.
- 1:04:28Mom, why don't you sit down? We can talk
- 1:04:30about what's been happening. They sat on
- 1:04:32the couch, grandma in the middle, Ashley
- 1:04:34on one side, while Mandy stayed on the
- 1:04:37floor, feeling exposed and vulnerable.
- 1:04:39She put her pacifier back in her mouth
- 1:04:41for comfort. "Ashley," Grandma said
- 1:04:44slowly. What have you done? I've been
- 1:04:47giving Mandy what she needed, what I
- 1:04:50should have given her 16 years ago. By
- 1:04:53treating her like a baby, by mothering
- 1:04:56her properly from the beginning.
- 1:04:59Ashley's voice was firm. You raised
- 1:05:02Mandy because I was too immature and
- 1:05:04selfish to do it myself. But now I'm
- 1:05:07here. I'm present. And Mandy needed to
- 1:05:10go back to the start to experience being
- 1:05:12motherthered the way she should have
- 1:05:13been. Grandma looked at Mandy. Is this
- 1:05:16what you want, sweetheart? Mandy nodded
- 1:05:19around her pacifier. Take that out and
- 1:05:22talk to me properly. Manny removed the
- 1:05:24pacifier, clutching it in her hand. It's
- 1:05:27what I want, Grandma. I know it looks
- 1:05:29weird, but mommy takes care of me now.
- 1:05:32She feeds me and dresses me and makes me
- 1:05:34feel safe, and I finally feel like I
- 1:05:37have a mother. You could have had that
- 1:05:39without, Grandma gestured at the onesie,
- 1:05:42the diapers that were clearly visible
- 1:05:43beneath it, the childish toys scattered
- 1:05:46around. Without all this. No, I
- 1:05:49couldn't, Mandy said quietly. I tried. I
- 1:05:52tried to connect with her like a normal
- 1:05:54teenager, but there was too much anger,
- 1:05:56too much hurt. this way. Being little,
- 1:05:59letting her take care of me like a baby.
- 1:06:01It's the only thing that worked. It's
- 1:06:03the only thing that let me trust her.
- 1:06:06Grandma was quiet for a long moment. And
- 1:06:08the diapers.
- 1:06:10Mandy felt her face burn. I I need them
- 1:06:14now. Need them. I don't really think
- 1:06:18about using the bathroom anymore. I just
- 1:06:22go. And mommy changes me. Tears started
- 1:06:26falling. I know it sounds crazy. I know
- 1:06:29you probably think I messed up, but I'm
- 1:06:31happy, Grandma. For the first time in my
- 1:06:34whole life, I'm actually happy. Grandma
- 1:06:37looked between Mandy and Ashley, her
- 1:06:38expression softening. You do look happy.
- 1:06:42Different, but happy. I am, Mandy
- 1:06:45whispered. Grandma stood up and walked
- 1:06:48over to Mandy, kneeling down to her
- 1:06:49level. She reached out and adjusted one
- 1:06:52of Mandy's pigtails, smoothing the hair
- 1:06:54back from her face. You were always such
- 1:06:57a serious child, she said softly. Always
- 1:07:00so grown up, so responsible. I tried to
- 1:07:03let you be a kid, but you wouldn't let
- 1:07:04yourself. You were always worried,
- 1:07:07always taking care of yourself because
- 1:07:08you didn't trust anyone else to do it. I
- 1:07:11trust Mommy now. I can see that. Grandma
- 1:07:14pulled her into a hug. If this is what
- 1:07:17you need, sweetheart, then I support
- 1:07:18you, both of you.
- 1:07:21Mandy sobbed into her grandmother's
- 1:07:23shoulder, relief flooding through her.
- 1:07:25You're not mad? I'm not mad. I'm just
- 1:07:28glad you finally have your mother. She
- 1:07:31pulled back and looked at Ashley. You
- 1:07:33take good care of her. You hear me? You
- 1:07:35owe her that much. I will, Ashley
- 1:07:38promised. I am. They spent the afternoon
- 1:07:41together, Grandma, Ashley, and Mandy.
- 1:07:43Ashley made lunch, and Grandma watched
- 1:07:46with curious eyes as she put Mandy in
- 1:07:48her booster seat, tied her bib on, and
- 1:07:50cut her sandwich into small pieces. You
- 1:07:53really do take care of everything,
- 1:07:55Grandma observed.
- 1:07:57Everything, Ashley confirmed. That's
- 1:08:00what she needs from me. After lunch,
- 1:08:02they sat in the living room talking.
- 1:08:04Mandy curled up on the couch with her
- 1:08:06head in Grandma's lap, sucking her
- 1:08:07pacifier while the two women discussed
- 1:08:10the pregnancy, the nursery, the future.
- 1:08:13"So, there will be two babies in this
- 1:08:15house soon," Grandma said, running her
- 1:08:17fingers through Mandy's hair. "Yes,"
- 1:08:19Ashley said. two daughters who both need
- 1:08:22me. And Mandy's okay with that, sharing
- 1:08:25you. I want to help, Mandy said around
- 1:08:28her pacifier. I want to be a good big
- 1:08:31sister. Grandma smiled. I'm sure you
- 1:08:33will be, sweetie. Later, when Mandy was
- 1:08:36sitting on the floor working on a
- 1:08:37puzzle, Grandma walked past and
- 1:08:39playfully swatted her bottom. The loud
- 1:08:42crinkle of the diaper was unmistakable.
- 1:08:45Mandy froze, her face burning with
- 1:08:47embarrassment. It was one thing for
- 1:08:49Grandma to know about the diapers
- 1:08:50intellectually, another thing entirely
- 1:08:53for her to hear them, to interact with
- 1:08:55them so casually. "Oh," Grandma said,
- 1:08:59realizing what she'd done. "Sorry,
- 1:09:01honey. I didn't mean to embarrass you."
- 1:09:04Ashley came into the room. "Everything
- 1:09:06okay?" Mandy looked up at her mother,
- 1:09:09then at her grandmother, then down at
- 1:09:10herself, sitting in a diaper that
- 1:09:12everyone now knew about, dressed like a
- 1:09:14toddler, surrounded by toys. This was
- 1:09:17the moment. The moment where she could
- 1:09:20back out, say this was all too much, ask
- 1:09:22to go back to being a regular teenager.
- 1:09:25But the words that came out of her mouth
- 1:09:27were different. It's okay, Grandma. I
- 1:09:30know what I look like. I know what I am.
- 1:09:32She put her pacifier back in and kept
- 1:09:35working on her puzzle. I'm mommy's baby
- 1:09:37girl, and I'm happy that way. Ashley
- 1:09:40crossed the room and knelt beside her,
- 1:09:42gathering her close. My brave little
- 1:09:45one. I'm so proud of you. Grandma
- 1:09:48watched them together, mother and
- 1:09:50daughter, finally bonded in this
- 1:09:52strange, unconventional way, and smiled.
- 1:09:55You've got yourself a good mommy now,
- 1:09:57Mandy. Don't you forget it. I won't,
- 1:10:00Mandy mumbled around her pacifier.
- 1:10:02Before Grandma left that evening, she
- 1:10:04pulled Ashley aside in the kitchen. I
- 1:10:07raised that girl for 16 years, she said
- 1:10:09quietly. I did my best, but I could
- 1:10:13never give her what she really needed.
- 1:10:15her mother.
- 1:10:17You're doing that now in your own way,
- 1:10:20but you're doing it. Thank you for
- 1:10:22understanding.
- 1:10:24Just promise me one thing. Grandma's
- 1:10:26voice was serious. Don't let this become
- 1:10:28about you. Don't let this be about
- 1:10:31fixing your guilt or playing out some
- 1:10:33fantasy. This has to be about what Mandy
- 1:10:36needs always. I promise, Ashley said.
- 1:10:40Everything I'm doing is for her. Grandma
- 1:10:43nodded, then smiled. Although, I have to
- 1:10:45say, she does look awfully cute in those
- 1:10:47pigtails.
- 1:10:49Ashley laughed. She really does. When
- 1:10:52Grandma said goodbye to Mandy, she
- 1:10:54kissed her forehead and whispered, "You
- 1:10:56be good for your mommy, okay? And call
- 1:10:58me if you need anything." I will,
- 1:11:01Grandma. I love you. I love you, too,
- 1:11:04sweetie so much. After she left, Ashley
- 1:11:08changed Manny's diaper. She'd wet it
- 1:11:10during the visit without even noticing
- 1:11:12and gave her the evening bottle. "You
- 1:11:14did so well today," Ashley murmured as
- 1:11:17Mandy drank. "Being so brave, being so
- 1:11:20honest with Grandma." Mandy just sucked
- 1:11:23contentedly, her body relaxing
- 1:11:25completely. Grandma knew now. Grandma
- 1:11:29accepted her, and that meant this was
- 1:11:32real. Chapter 12. Two baby girls.
- 1:11:37Ashley went into labor on a Tuesday
- 1:11:39morning, 3 weeks before her due date.
- 1:11:42Mandy was sitting in her booster seat
- 1:11:44eating breakfast, oatmeal cut with milk,
- 1:11:47her bib tied snugly around her neck,
- 1:11:49when mommy gasped and pressed her hand
- 1:11:51to her belly. "It's time," Ashley said,
- 1:11:54her voice tight. "The baby's coming."
- 1:11:57Mandy's pacifier fell from her mouth.
- 1:12:00"Now?
- 1:12:02Now." Ashley was already calling David,
- 1:12:04telling him to get on the next flight.
- 1:12:06Then she called grandma. Can you come
- 1:12:08stay with Mandy? I need to get to the
- 1:12:10hospital. Within 20 minutes, Grandma
- 1:12:13arrived. She found Mandy still in her
- 1:12:15booster seat looking terrified, her
- 1:12:17breakfast forgotten. "It's okay,
- 1:12:20sweetie," Grandma said, unbuckling her
- 1:12:22and helping her down. "Your mommy's
- 1:12:24going to be fine, and soon you'll have a
- 1:12:26baby sister." "But what if what if she
- 1:12:29doesn't need me anymore?
- 1:12:32What if the new baby is enough?" "Oh,
- 1:12:34honey." Grandma held her close. Your
- 1:12:37mommy has enough love for both of you.
- 1:12:39You'll see. Ashley came downstairs with
- 1:12:42her hospital bag, breathing through a
- 1:12:43contraction. When it passed, she crossed
- 1:12:46to Mandy and cupped her face. I love you
- 1:12:49so much, baby girl. You know that,
- 1:12:51right? Mandy nodded, tears streaming
- 1:12:53down her face. I'll be back soon with
- 1:12:56your little sister, and then we'll all
- 1:12:58be together, our whole family.
- 1:13:02Ashley kissed her forehead. Be good for
- 1:13:04grandma. I'll call as soon as I can.
- 1:13:07Then she was gone and Mandy was left
- 1:13:09standing. It wasn't mommy. David called
- 1:13:12in the afternoon with an update. Ashley
- 1:13:14was doing great. Labor was progressing.
- 1:13:16Everything looked good. Mandy tried to
- 1:13:19feel excited, but she just felt scared.
- 1:13:22What if everything changed now? What if
- 1:13:25mommy didn't have time for bottles and
- 1:13:27baths and bedtime stories anymore? What
- 1:13:30if Mandy became too much work, too much
- 1:13:33trouble compared to a real baby? That
- 1:13:36evening, as grandma was giving Mandy her
- 1:13:38dinner, Ashley called. "She's here,"
- 1:13:41Ashley said, her voice full of tears and
- 1:13:43joy. "Your baby sister is here. She's
- 1:13:46perfect, Mandy. She's absolutely
- 1:13:48perfect." "What's her name?" Mandy asked
- 1:13:51around her pacifier. "Emma."
- 1:13:54"Her name is Emma Rose." "When can I
- 1:13:58meet her?" tomorrow. You and Grandma can
- 1:14:01come tomorrow morning. I can't wait for
- 1:14:03you to see her baby girl. I can't wait
- 1:14:05for our family to be complete. Grandma
- 1:14:08dressed Mandy in one of her prettier
- 1:14:09outfits for the hospital visit. A soft
- 1:14:12pink dress with white tights, her hair
- 1:14:14in careful braids with pink ribbons. She
- 1:14:17looked sweet and young and nervous. "You
- 1:14:20look beautiful, sweetie," Grandma said,
- 1:14:22adjusting her collar. Your mommy is
- 1:14:24going to be so happy to see you. At the
- 1:14:27hospital, they took the elevator to the
- 1:14:28maternity ward. Mandy held Grandma's
- 1:14:31hand tightly, her pacifier working
- 1:14:33overtime in her mouth. When they reached
- 1:14:36Ashley's room, Grandma knocked softly.
- 1:14:38"Come in," Ashley called. They entered
- 1:14:41and Mandy saw Mommy sitting up in bed,
- 1:14:44glowing and tired and beautiful.
- 1:14:46[snorts] And in her arms, wrapped in a
- 1:14:49pink blanket, was the tiniest baby Mandy
- 1:14:52had ever seen. "Come here, sweetie,"
- 1:14:55Ashley said softly. Come meet your
- 1:14:57sister. Mandy approached slowly, taking
- 1:15:00her pacifier out so she could speak.
- 1:15:02She's so small. She is. She's 6 lb 2 oz.
- 1:15:07Perfect and healthy. Ashley shifted the
- 1:15:10baby slightly so Mandy could see her
- 1:15:12better. Emma, this is your big sister,
- 1:15:16Mandy. The baby's eyes were closed, her
- 1:15:19tiny fist pressed against her cheek. She
- 1:15:22was wearing a hospital onesie and a
- 1:15:23little pink hat. She was so impossibly
- 1:15:26small, so fragile.
- 1:15:29"Can I hold her?" Mandy whispered. "Of
- 1:15:32course. Sit down here beside me." Mandy
- 1:15:35climbed carefully onto the hospital bed,
- 1:15:37and Ashley placed Emma in her arms. The
- 1:15:40baby was warm and light, making little
- 1:15:42snuffling sounds in her sleep. "Hi,
- 1:15:45Emma." Mandy breathed. "I'm your big
- 1:15:47sister. I'm going to help mommy take
- 1:15:49care of you." Ashley wrapped her arm
- 1:15:51around Manny's shoulders, pulling her
- 1:15:53close so she was holding both her
- 1:15:55daughters. My two girls. My two
- 1:15:58beautiful baby girls.
- 1:16:01Mandy looked up at her. I'm still your
- 1:16:04baby. Always forever. You're my first
- 1:16:08baby and nothing will ever change that.
- 1:16:11Ashley kissed her temple. Emma needs a
- 1:16:13lot of care right now, but so do you.
- 1:16:16And I have enough love for both of you.
- 1:16:18I promise.
- 1:16:19Something tight in Mandy's chest finally
- 1:16:22loosened. She looked down at Emma, at
- 1:16:24this tiny person who would need
- 1:16:26everything, feeding, changing, constant
- 1:16:28attention. And instead of feeling
- 1:16:31jealous or replaced, Mandy felt
- 1:16:34protective. She felt like a big sister.
- 1:16:38A big baby sister, but still a big
- 1:16:40sister. "I love her," Mandy said softly.
- 1:16:44"I know you do," Ashley murmured. "And
- 1:16:46she's going to love you, too, Ashley."
- 1:16:49and Emma came home 3 days later. David
- 1:16:51had arrived and taken a week off work to
- 1:16:53help, and Grandma stayed on to assist
- 1:16:55during the adjustment period. The house
- 1:16:58transformed into controlled chaos. Emma
- 1:17:01cried at all hours, needed to be fed
- 1:17:03every 2 hours, went through countless
- 1:17:06diapers. But through it all, Mandy was
- 1:17:08there watching and learning and helping
- 1:17:11however she could. She brought mommy
- 1:17:14clean diapers, both sizes, Emma's
- 1:17:16newborn ones and her own size eights.
- 1:17:19She sat quietly while mommy fed Emma,
- 1:17:21sucking her own pacifier contentedly.
- 1:17:24She colored pictures for the nursery and
- 1:17:26helped fold tiny baby clothes. And
- 1:17:28slowly she realized that nothing had
- 1:17:30changed between her and mommy.
- 1:17:32Difference was that now Emma was there
- 1:17:33too, another baby who needed the same
- 1:17:36care. 2 weeks after Emma came home,
- 1:17:39Mandy was sitting on the couch while
- 1:17:40Ashley nursed Emma. The baby made soft
- 1:17:42sucking sounds, her tiny hand pressed
- 1:17:44against Ashley's breast. Mandy watched,
- 1:17:48mesmerized. She'd seen Ashley
- 1:17:50breastfeeding before, but it still
- 1:17:51seemed magical. The way Emma knew
- 1:17:54exactly what to do. The way mommy's body
- 1:17:56provided everything the baby needed.
- 1:17:59"Does it hurt?" Mandy asked around her
- 1:18:01pacifier.
- 1:18:03"A little at first, but not anymore.
- 1:18:06It's mostly just
- 1:18:08special knowing I'm giving her
- 1:18:11everything she needs. Ashley looked at
- 1:18:14Mandy.
- 1:18:16Finally, on a quiet afternoon when David
- 1:18:18was at work and Grandma had gone home
- 1:18:20and Emma was sleeping in her bassinet,
- 1:18:23Mandy approached Ashley. She was loved.
- 1:18:26Epilogue. Two years later.
- 1:18:30Emma is two now, a bright, fearless
- 1:18:32toddler who races through the house on
- 1:18:34unsteady legs and demands up whenever
- 1:18:37she sees Mandy. The town home in Santa
- 1:18:40Barbara is louder, messier, more alive
- 1:18:43than it ever was when Mandy first
- 1:18:45arrived. There are toys everywhere,
- 1:18:47crayon marks on the lower half of the
- 1:18:49walls, and two high chairs side by side
- 1:18:52in the kitchen, one small, one booster
- 1:18:54size. Mandy is 18. She graduated high
- 1:18:58school last spring with honors, still
- 1:19:00wearing pull-ups under her cap and gown
- 1:19:02because that is simply what feels right
- 1:19:04now. She goes to community college 3
- 1:19:06days a week, carries a backpack with
- 1:19:08textbooks and a spare diaper, and comes
- 1:19:10home to the life she chose. Most days,
- 1:19:13she still dresses the way mommy likes.
- 1:19:16Soft dresses, onesies under cardigans
- 1:19:18when it's chilly, hair and braids or
- 1:19:20pigtails. She still uses diapers
- 1:19:23fulltime. She still drinks from bottles
- 1:19:25at night. The regression never fully
- 1:19:28reversed because it never needed to. It
- 1:19:30became home. Tonight, Emma is finally
- 1:19:33asleep after three stories and two
- 1:19:35songs. Her little body curled under a
- 1:19:38blanket with her stuffed bunny clutched
- 1:19:40tight, her breaths deep and even in the
- 1:19:42dim glow of the star-shaped nightlight.
- 1:19:45The house is quiet except for the soft
- 1:19:47hum of the dishwasher and the distant
- 1:19:50sound of David watching a game in the
- 1:19:51living room. Mandy pads into the nursery
- 1:19:54and her
