6. 0:10is going to be the story of
7. 0:13the little girl named shannon matthews
8. 0:17let's get into it
9. 0:20karen matthews was a mum of seven
10. 0:23one of those obviously being shannon
11. 0:26matthews
12. 0:28she was somewhat of
13. 0:31a drifter i guess that she would drift
14. 0:34in and out of relationship
15. 0:36she came under the sort of impression
16. 0:39that
17. 0:39sex would mean love which clearly you
18. 0:43know it
19. 0:43isn't um she had as i said seven
20. 0:47children
21. 0:48six different fathers um
22. 0:52she wasn't the smartest child in the box
23. 0:55nor was she the best mother
24. 0:57she had social services involved a
25. 1:00number of times
26. 1:02which kind of leads me then to sort of a
27. 1:04question of
28. 1:05you know where were social services
29. 1:08why wasn't anything happening with these
30. 1:12children why weren't they on the list to
31. 1:14be watched or
32. 1:15there's so many questions i digress
33. 1:18though on that
34. 1:19anyway um she moved
35. 1:22to a chew up to down in
36. 1:26jews remove a two up two down is
37. 1:29basically
38. 1:29two bedrooms a living room kitchen and a
39. 1:32bathroom basically two up to down
40. 1:38karen lived here with craig mia and
41. 1:41six out of her seven children one
42. 1:44that lived with their biological father
43. 1:48the other six live with these two
44. 1:51the her boyfriend craig was
45. 1:56strange to say the least there will be
46. 1:59more details on him later on but
47. 2:02he was a very strange acting
48. 2:07around children just just in general
49. 2:11you know a lot went on with
50. 2:14these pair which obviously i will get
51. 2:16more into momentarily
52. 2:20shannon matthews was born on the 9th of
53. 2:23september 1998.
54. 2:26she was a very happy go lucky
55. 2:29a very loner of a child she only had
56. 2:32sort of one or two friends
57. 2:34that she would talk to she would spend a
58. 2:36lot of time in her bedroom writing in
59. 2:38journals playing with dolls
60. 2:40a very normal quote-unquote girly girl
61. 2:44she liked the pink the fluffies you know
62. 2:46the dolls
63. 2:48she
64. 2:51she liked her own company i suppose even
65. 2:53though there was lots of other children
66. 2:55in the house
67. 2:56she was very much you know into her own
68. 2:59little space and
69. 3:00enjoyed her own little company
70. 3:05february 19 2008
71. 3:08there was a 999 call to the police
72. 3:10declaring that
73. 3:11shannon aged nine was missing and didn't
74. 3:14return from school
75. 3:16karen also informed shannon's father
76. 3:20here on the left that um
77. 3:23she was missing she rang
78. 3:27after you know she didn't return from
79. 3:28school and said that she had gone to the
80. 3:31swimming bars
81. 3:32um here in the uk um during
82. 3:36junior school you have swimming lessons
83. 3:39which you go to
84. 3:41once a week twice a week sometimes and
85. 3:43you get certificates to learn how to
86. 3:45swim
87. 3:45to all the different you know going into
88. 3:48water etc
89. 3:49she had gone to the swim bars she'd got
90. 3:51off the bus
91. 3:53walked halfway home with her friend
92. 3:56they split to go their separate
93. 3:58directions and
94. 3:59shannon never returned home
95. 4:04in the uk like many places when a child
96. 4:08goes missing you know the first 24
97. 4:1012 24 hours is super important so
98. 4:14you know there was a lot a lot of police
99. 4:17surrounding the estate
100. 4:19also a lot of the estate come out now
101. 4:23an estate in the uk is
102. 4:26um how do i describe it it's sort of
103. 4:30low income you know a lot don't work a
104. 4:32lot are on benefits
105. 4:34but they're also very very family
106. 4:38oriented if one kid's missing all their
107. 4:40kids are missing and they're they're
108. 4:41right you know full-on searching
109. 4:45so along with the police out searching
110. 4:48julie
111. 4:49one of karen's friends also set up
112. 4:53the um it's like a little tenant's house
113. 4:57basically where you'd go to if you
114. 4:59needed any issues
115. 5:00um opened that up got a little i think
116. 5:03it was like 300 pounds that the
117. 5:05um jews remor community centre was given
118. 5:10to help sort of fund the search for
119. 5:13shannon
120. 5:14there was you know hundreds of people
121. 5:17out searching that night uh
122. 5:20the police obviously told these two not
123. 5:23too great in search of refrain from
124. 5:25searching to stay at home
125. 5:28the whole time there was um camera crews
126. 5:31and you know paparazzi outside
127. 5:34etc and there is a documentary out there
128. 5:38that actually filmed
129. 5:39whilst this was going on i will link it
130. 5:42in the descriptions for you to see if
131. 5:45you wish to see
132. 5:46but craig during this time acted
133. 5:50very strange and so did she you know she
134. 5:53would um
135. 5:54smirk at things laugh at things
136. 5:57craig would be very much in the corner
137. 5:59on his computer
138. 6:01it was just a strange thing overall
139. 6:0724 days this little girl was missing
140. 6:10the people of jews brie moore put every
141. 6:13penny they had now bearing in mind like
142. 6:15these people didn't have two pennies to
143. 6:18rub together
144. 6:19but every spare penny went to
145. 6:22the missing children missing child
146. 6:25um posters
147. 6:29t-shirts anything they could possibly
148. 6:32get that would help you know shannon
149. 6:34come home and come home alive
150. 6:36they were willing to do you know they
151. 6:38were putting a lot of hours in a lot of
152. 6:40these
153. 6:41people didn't see their own children for
154. 6:43days at a time because they were just so
155. 6:45busy rallying around you know and that's
156. 6:48very much an estate i lived on an estate
157. 6:50growing up
158. 6:51it is very much you know it's family
159. 6:54orientated if something happens on the
160. 6:55estate everybody knows about
161. 6:57it everybody rallies around you know if
162. 7:00there's
163. 7:00some house catches on fire for example
164. 7:03you would be there going through your
165. 7:05old stuff to try and help that family
166. 7:07it's a very much of a very very much
167. 7:10family orientated
168. 7:14area
169. 7:16during this time karen's two best
170. 7:18friends julian natalie
171. 7:20julie's on the left natalie's on the
172. 7:21right julie was very much
173. 7:24um interested in
174. 7:27getting the posters out getting people
175. 7:30interested
176. 7:31getting the paparazzi to make sure that
177. 7:33you know it doesn't
178. 7:34drown out bearing in mind this was the
179. 7:38um same sort of time as
180. 7:41another more popular story of a missing
181. 7:44child
182. 7:45went was out and
183. 7:49that kind of overpowered what was going
184. 7:52on on jewsbury
185. 7:53natalie on the other hand pictured here
186. 7:56on the right
187. 7:57she started having um
188. 8:00suspicions she was she was questioning
189. 8:03things she was questioning
190. 8:06what was going on she was questioning
191. 8:09karen's reaction
192. 8:10she was questioning how karen was
193. 8:13behaving
194. 8:14you know there was a lot of questions
195. 8:16for
196. 8:17natalie where i think because natalie
197. 8:20out of the two natalie would um babysit
198. 8:24a lot for the children
199. 8:25and have all the kids in her house where
200. 8:27julie was
201. 8:28more front and center at the community
202. 8:32center
203. 8:32getting everything up and running there
204. 8:34that maybe julie didn't see
205. 8:37what some of the things that natalie was
206. 8:39seeing
207. 8:40and inevitably never sort of realized
208. 8:43um they did however
209. 8:47um speak on it at some point julie just
210. 8:50so
211. 8:51i sort of palmed her off really and was
212. 8:53just like you know
213. 8:54karen's not smart enough to do this
214. 8:56which i agree with she's not
215. 8:58which is i will get into in a minute but
216. 9:01natalie was very much
217. 9:02something isn't right and i don't know
218. 9:05what it is
219. 9:08day 24 14th of march shannon was
220. 9:12found in michael donovan's flat michael
221. 9:15donovan
222. 9:16is the uncle of craig uh
223. 9:19shannon matthews's stepfather
224. 9:23the whole thing of surrounding this was
225. 9:26somewhat strange because nobody had
226. 9:28mentioned anything
227. 9:29to the family liaison officer any sort
228. 9:33of police that donovan
229. 9:35even existed which is really bizarre all
230. 9:38by itself
231. 9:40um when karen found out that shannon
232. 9:44had been found um
233. 9:47again natalie was present and natalie
234. 9:50sort of
235. 9:51looked at her reaction and i suppose
236. 9:54didn't like the reaction was very much
237. 9:57like
238. 9:57whoa wait hang on a minute your child's
239. 9:59just being found alive
240. 10:01there should be some kind of reaction
241. 10:04here not
242. 10:05a face like a smacked ass kind of thing
243. 10:08um karen was then
244. 10:11asked to go to the police station to
245. 10:15um identify shannon you know say yep
246. 10:17that's lost my daughter etc
247. 10:20she went to the police station
248. 10:25and said uh yeah that shannon and
249. 10:28didn't ask any questions which the
250. 10:30police officers
251. 10:32and the family liaison officer found so
252. 10:34so bizarre
253. 10:36she didn't ask well where was she um you
254. 10:39know
255. 10:40what happened is she okay you know any
256. 10:42of these questions she just did not
257. 10:44ask a single question which obviously
258. 10:48then
259. 10:48the police had their back suppers like
260. 10:51to say well
261. 10:52okay something's not right here
262. 10:56donovan was of course arrested
263. 11:00at the scene um once taken into
264. 11:03the police station he was when you take
265. 11:07him to a police station you have to go
266. 11:08to the main desk and then the
267. 11:10officer the sergeant at the main desk
268. 11:12authorizes your
269. 11:14detention to stay there he'll ask you a
270. 11:16bunch of questions
271. 11:17um you know medical uh mental
272. 11:21you know you feel unstable that kind of
273. 11:23stuff and then
274. 11:24say yep you'll be entertained for x
275. 11:27amount of hours normally it's 24 you
276. 11:28have to go on if
277. 11:30etc anyway and as he was at the custody
278. 11:34sergeant's desk
279. 11:36he was um saying you need to go and get
280. 11:40karen
281. 11:40go and arrest karen and
282. 11:44the officer turned around and said you
283. 11:46know you're still under your rights you
284. 11:48know you're probably better off not
285. 11:49saying anything
286. 11:50until you speak to a solicitor he was
287. 11:53continued saying
288. 11:54go and arrest karen go and arrest karen
289. 11:56it's all a plan go and arrest karen
290. 12:00um this was then obviously an interview
291. 12:03later on
292. 12:04he did a pre-made statement so
293. 12:07um again when you have a you'll have a
294. 12:09duty solicitor come to you
295. 12:11you can either go no comment
296. 12:14which is what's listed normally i'll
297. 12:16tell you to do just saying no comment no
298. 12:18comment no comment
299. 12:20you can spill the beans as they
300. 12:24say or you can have a pre-done letter
301. 12:28which your solicitor will read to them
302. 12:31and then he'll do a no comment
303. 12:33afterwards which is what he'd done
304. 12:35he had then stated that it was a plan
305. 12:39that he was to pick up shannon from
306. 12:43school hold him hold her in his
307. 12:46flat for um
308. 12:50however many days until the reward got
309. 12:53a quote unquote decent amount of money
310. 12:56and him and karen were to share
311. 12:59the funds once it got
312. 13:02to a again quote-unquote decent amount
313. 13:05of
314. 13:06money again there's a few different
315. 13:09stories going around about this that's
316. 13:11this is just what his side of the story
317. 13:13was
318. 13:15there was then obviously they questioned
319. 13:18karen and she gave a different
320. 13:21account during this time
321. 13:25karen was taken in quite a few times to
322. 13:28you know answer some questions or just
323. 13:32to talk because karen's house
324. 13:34a lot like a lot of estates in the uk
325. 13:37wales scotland etc is
326. 13:40is very much you know everyone's in a
327. 13:43night of everyone else's house you go in
328. 13:46you have cupboard there's like six other
329. 13:47people
330. 13:48it it's just a very so sometimes the
331. 13:50police would just take them
332. 13:52in just to question them so that they
333. 13:54could have
334. 13:55a bit of quiet time with them they were
335. 13:57both taken in on a number of occasions
336. 13:59you know
337. 14:00obviously craig asking why wasn't his
338. 14:02uncle ever mentioned
339. 14:04karen's still denying even knowledge
340. 14:07that the uncle
341. 14:08even existed she then
342. 14:11went to oh well i know him but i don't
343. 14:14know him that well
344. 14:16too oh well i know him that he's a
345. 14:18scumbag
346. 14:20scumbag he was they he she just would
347. 14:22never keep her story straight
348. 14:24at all on further inspection however
349. 14:27of donovan's house they did find
350. 14:31other things they found a
351. 14:34noose that was attached to the rafters
352. 14:37so
353. 14:38and basically where you'd get into your
354. 14:40loft there's like a little doorway
355. 14:42um they had that open and donovan
356. 14:46would put a noose that had some kind of
357. 14:50um extension able so it would she
358. 14:53um shannon could use the bathroom or sit
359. 14:56down and draw
360. 14:58but also could not get out of the
361. 15:00building or get out of the door
362. 15:03which is mind-boggling to say the least
363. 15:11with the police having absolutely no
364. 15:14luck sort of
365. 15:15getting any evidence as such that
366. 15:18where karen was involved with this
367. 15:21they then um spoke to natalie again
368. 15:24natalie's on the right julie's on the
369. 15:26left
370. 15:27um natalie then spoke to julie and they
371. 15:30sort of came up with a plan
372. 15:31that they were going to go and confront
373. 15:34um
374. 15:36karen and try and get some kind of truth
375. 15:39out of her
376. 15:40to be fair karen is not really one for
377. 15:42truths but they thought it would be
378. 15:45something that they could do they
379. 15:47eventually worked out that the
380. 15:49liaison officer and the local bobby to
381. 15:52that area
382. 15:54would meet up one sunday and
383. 15:57get karen to come back to the estate
384. 16:03she was living
385. 16:06with her brother at this time as craig
386. 16:09had been arrested
387. 16:11for child p and they
388. 16:15had fear that if she went back to the
389. 16:18estate she'd be kind of lynch mobbed as
390. 16:20such
391. 16:21whether this was true or not i don't
392. 16:23think it would have been it would be
393. 16:25more him that would have got
394. 16:26it if he had gone back to the estate not
395. 16:29so much her
396. 16:30but anyway that's another story
397. 16:34uh they decided to go in the car there
398. 16:37was these two were in the back
399. 16:38the liaison officer was driving and
400. 16:41karen was in the passenger seat
401. 16:43um they basically questioned her and
402. 16:46said you know we need the truth
403. 16:48we're your friends we stuck by you we
404. 16:50want the truth
405. 16:51she then you know let out an almighty
406. 16:55scream and cry
407. 16:56and told them that she wanted to leave
408. 17:00craig the only way to do it was
409. 17:03to get donovan's help he had said he'd
410. 17:06help her
411. 17:07and but craig never went to work that
412. 17:11day
413. 17:12again whether that's a lie or whether
414. 17:15it's truth
415. 17:16who knows but they got some kind of
416. 17:19answer that yes
417. 17:20she was involved and yes she knew the
418. 17:23whole time
419. 17:24where shannon matthews was being held
420. 17:26for those 24 days
421. 17:29julie this just she was
422. 17:32she was so upset you know she'd she'd
423. 17:34done so much work
424. 17:36and um natalie she just felt
425. 17:40so sick and betrayed and i'm sure julie
426. 17:43did fail that as well at some point
427. 17:47the trial began on the 11th of november
428. 17:50the charges were donovan was charged
429. 17:53with
430. 17:53abduction and false imprisonment
431. 17:56matthews was charged with child neglect
432. 17:58and preventing the course of justice
433. 18:01both
434. 18:02and both found guilty on the 4th
435. 18:05of december and both sentenced to 8
436. 18:09years in jail
437. 18:14as i said karen was sentenced to eight
438. 18:16years however
439. 18:17she did not serve the whole of the eight
440. 18:19years she was
441. 18:21out in less than half the time so less
442. 18:24than four
443. 18:25years she was out of prison
444. 18:30jail she lost custody of every single
445. 18:33one of her children they were all given
446. 18:35new identities
447. 18:37and adopted out into new families
448. 18:41thank god uh it's
449. 18:44it's a horrific thing for children you
450. 18:46know some of these
451. 18:47kids thankfully are very small so
452. 18:50they're probably
453. 18:50not gonna remember but you know some of
454. 18:53these children are gonna remember who
455. 18:55their mum is
456. 18:56and have to live with this and but for
457. 18:59me is a huge
458. 19:00thing you know knowing and being able to
459. 19:03google
460. 19:04and you know shannon matthews although
461. 19:06her identity has been changed and no
462. 19:08papers are allowed to do pictures
463. 19:10of her she's still going to know who she
464. 19:13is she's still going to know that story
465. 19:15surrounds her
466. 19:17and there are going to be people that
467. 19:19are probably recognized her you know
468. 19:21people who were close to her
469. 19:23but i'm just thankful that the children
470. 19:25were all
471. 19:26you know adopted out and they're in some
472. 19:28amazing families now
473. 19:32after her release from jail she was also
474. 19:35given a new identity
475. 19:37which kind of pisses me off because it
476. 19:40costs our government our taxpayers
477. 19:44a lot of money to give somebody a new
478. 19:46identity
479. 19:48you know it's not as if like she's the
480. 19:50kids who deserve a new identity
481. 19:53but she's a scumbag who don't
482. 19:56deserve a new identity but that's just
483. 19:59my feelings and my opinions on it
484. 20:02she came out and she became involved
485. 20:05with
486. 20:06this man um i'm not going to go into too
487. 20:08much details
488. 20:09of he's a convicted
489. 20:13predator you can figure out what he was
490. 20:18in jail for he also just come out after
491. 20:21serving 18 months from
492. 20:23from recollection and they're now
493. 20:26engaged to be married two scumbags
494. 20:29together how awesome is that
495. 20:31they deserve each other i hope that they
496. 20:34live nowhere near anywhere that's with
497. 20:36children but
498. 20:37knowing our government i'm gonna guess
499. 20:38that they live on another estate
500. 20:40somewhere
501. 20:41which is just so sad so so sad
502. 20:45at the end of this i'm just glad the
503. 20:48little girl is safe
504. 20:49i'm glad that all the other children are
505. 20:51now got new identities and are safe
506. 20:54this is the there and them and now you
507. 20:56know
508. 20:58uh karen has changed her hair color uh
509. 21:02craigers just changed his book for a bit
510. 21:04of weight down
511. 21:06donovan looks pretty much the same and
512. 21:08julie
513. 21:09who was i suppose karen's best friend
514. 21:13she did go and visit her whilst in jail
515. 21:15trying to get the answers
516. 21:17the answers are just not there i just
517. 21:20don't think we're ever going to get
518. 21:21answers and some
519. 21:22in some cases and this is the one do i
520. 21:25believe donovan
521. 21:26and karen could have made this up by
522. 21:29themselves
523. 21:30absolutely not i you know in my opinion
524. 21:34craig's family had something to do with
525. 21:36this they are
526. 21:37that smart again do i know that for
527. 21:40facts
528. 21:41no i don't but again i just hope
529. 21:44that the children are happy and i hope
530. 21:46these three
531. 21:48rot to be perfectly honest you know
532. 21:51to do that to a child to do that to your
533. 21:55own child is just
534. 21:57insane to me you allowed your child to
535. 21:59go through
536. 22:0024 days of hell like you allowed your
537. 22:04child to go through 24 days of being
538. 22:06drugged
539. 22:08and being hidden in a van bed and being
540. 22:11noosed
541. 22:13no sorry no there's nothing
542. 22:16at all that would make me feel bad for
543. 22:19her
544. 22:20all them too in the other hand and julie
545. 22:24girl you got way more
546. 22:28care in your heart than i would have i
547. 22:30get why you wanted a visit and why you
548. 22:32would try
549. 22:34but you still got you've got more i'm
550. 22:36not sure i could have done it
551. 22:38so props to you
552. 22:43my final thoughts i just pray that the
553. 22:46children are getting the therapy that
554. 22:48they need
555. 22:49i pray that they get an old everything
556. 22:53that they need you know the therapy the
557. 22:54treatment whatever that
558. 22:56it is to make them become
559. 22:59what they can become within adult life
560. 23:02you know
561. 23:03a few of them uh little adults already a
562. 23:06few of them are going
563. 23:07on to become adults soon
564. 23:10it just it's just so heartbreaking that
565. 23:13these children know where they're gonna
566. 23:15come from
567. 23:16and although they've got new identities
568. 23:18now you know
569. 23:19for the percentage of these children
570. 23:21they're still gonna know that their mom
571. 23:23was karen matthews and just to know that
572. 23:27it's gonna have some kind of impact on
573. 23:29your psyche
574. 23:30and who you are you question things
575. 23:34i just hope that they're all getting the
576. 23:36help that they you know so deserve
577. 23:39and that they have an amazing future
578. 23:42and you know you aren't you aren't your
579. 23:44mother's keeper and you are
580. 23:46you aren't going to become what your
581. 23:47mother is and i just wish them all the
582. 23:50luck in the world
583. 23:52that's my final thoughts i hope you
