- 0:00I don't have social life. Like right
- 0:01now, no social life.
- 0:04I know that I've said "se pasa rico
- 0:05soltera", you know, like single single
- 0:08women have a a lot of fun and and yeah,
- 0:10it's true, but but not so much for me
- 0:13right now because I'm just a busy bee.
- 0:19There's so much going on and I'm
- 0:20preparing for my second tour, my second
- 0:23run in the US. I'm preparing for my
- 0:25performance at the World Cup, which I'm
- 0:27going to try not to suck at.
- 0:29And then
- 0:30um I'm also preparing for my European
- 0:34residency, 12 stadiums in in in Madrid.
- 0:38Um so there's a lot there's a lot going
- 0:40on. And also my kids' everyday life. So
- 0:43yeah, right now I don't think I don't
- 0:45think there's a lot of fun for me in the
- 0:48in on on my on my path, but
- 0:50um
- 0:51yeah, I'm I'm just enjoying this this
- 0:53moment in time and enjoy my career,
- 0:55living it to its maximum. I've done this
- 0:57professionally 30 years already and
- 1:01it's feels to me like I'm just starting.
- 1:04It feels Everything feels new always.
- 1:06I'm as excited as the first day or more,
- 1:09as passionate or more. I'm very
- 1:11inspired. I'm making a lot of new music,
- 1:14a lot of new collaborations, still on
- 1:17tour. We just did a stadium run in the
- 1:19US and now I'm coming back. I'm going to
- 1:21be performing where most of the games
- 1:23are happening, same cities. So that's
- 1:26going to be interesting, you know, to
- 1:28have all that footballistic energy, uh
- 1:31sports fans energy kind of brought to my
- 1:34concerts as well. It's going to be a lot
- 1:36I think there's going to be a real
- 1:38synergy there.
- 1:47I wanted to write something for this
- 1:48World Cup and I knew that it had to have
- 1:51the secret ingredients,
- 1:53the old ingredients that a World Cup
- 1:55song needs, a great beat, energy, a
- 1:58strong message. It just happened, you
- 2:00know, it really flowed. It was very easy
- 2:03to to come up with the with the melody,
- 2:06with the
- 2:07the lyrics, the concept. And then
- 2:10obviously when I had Burna Boy recorded,
- 2:13that was like the cherry on top. Really,
- 2:15I always wanted to do something with
- 2:16Burna and I think that his voice just
- 2:17takes it to another level.
- 2:22The song is much more than a World Cup
- 2:24song. It's It's a message for every
- 2:27child who's been told that their dream
- 2:29is too big and to remind us that every
- 2:32champion started out as a kid one day
- 2:35who perhaps went through hardship and
- 2:37struggles, but there was someone always
- 2:40behind that child that believed in them
- 2:43and that's why they didn't give up and
- 2:44that's what we need to do as society. We
- 2:47have to do the best we can to offer our
- 2:50kids with opportunities so they can
- 2:53achieve their goals in life and that the
- 2:57opportunity, the one the most valuable
- 2:59one, is education. And that's why this
- 3:01song um is has been created not only for
- 3:05the World Cup but for all of those kids
- 3:07who don't have access to quality
- 3:10education. And um this is a very
- 3:12important World Cup because this one
- 3:15uh it's going to serve as a platform for
- 3:16all those kids who don't have a voice,
- 3:18who don't have disability and at this
- 3:21time when the world is so fractured and
- 3:24divided and
- 3:26um the algorithm
- 3:27manipulates us all, I think it's it's a
- 3:30good time to come together and talk
- 3:31about the kids and put them at the
- 3:33center of the debate and and uh
- 3:37and uh make them be the real
- 3:39protagonists here.
- 3:47It's crazy why I have this connection
- 3:50with football that seems unbreakable,
- 3:52you know? My history with football
- 3:55goes back to 2006 when I performed at
- 3:58the first World Cup with Wyclef.
- 4:00Performed Hips Don't Lie.
- 4:02And then
- 4:04again on 2010, which is when I met the
- 4:08father of my kids who was playing during
- 4:10that World Cup. That's why I call my
- 4:11kids the Waka kids because they're
- 4:14they I think they were born because of
- 4:16that song. That song took me to the
- 4:18World Cup and the World Cup had an
- 4:20important impact in my life. And and
- 4:23they were born, the best that has
- 4:25happened to me. And then on 2014, I was
- 4:28pregnant with my little one and all of
- 4:30my fans, like they saw me perform and
- 4:33they're like, she's pregnant. And I was
- 4:35like a month pregnant, like 2 months
- 4:37maximum. I But they know me so well. So
- 4:39every World Cup there's something really
- 4:41magical and I think this one is going to
- 4:43be all about bringing people together
- 4:46in this very sensitive time moment in
- 4:49time.
- 4:50Socially and and politically.
- 4:57I think motherhood makes you strong. I
- 4:59feel that the moment I became a mother,
- 5:02I uh
- 5:04I saw life through a different
- 5:06perspective. They are true teachers, you
- 5:09know? I learned so much from them every
- 5:10day. When your world collapses and you
- 5:13have to get up and pay the bills and and
- 5:15still provide for your family and still
- 5:18uh you know, prepare breakfast and and
- 5:20take your kids to school and life needs
- 5:23to go on. Needs to go on because you
- 5:25have the responsibility to watch after
- 5:28uh two human beings. Seeing my kids also
- 5:32overcome those difficulties, that also
- 5:34fills my heart and understanding that
- 5:38only through hardship is when you
- 5:39realize who your true friends are and
- 5:42when you realize that you have you do
- 5:44have friends
- 5:46who are there for you when
- 5:49to through through the bad times and the
- 5:51good times, then you rediscover life.
- 5:53You see life in it through a whole
- 5:55different lens, you know? Life is
- 5:56beautiful in spite of all
- 5:59the
- 6:00the pain that we all go through, you
- 6:02know?
- 6:03Humans is just This is what it it is
- 6:05what it is, like
- 6:07like they say, you know? This is life.
- 6:10Uh Life is a but it's it's so
- 6:12worth living it, you know?
- 6:18I always thought that I was weaker than
- 6:20what life proved me to be. Through those
- 6:23challenging moments, I discovered
- 6:25how resilient
- 6:27we all are. And I really I truly admire
- 6:30so many women that that just have to
- 6:32push forward every day, push forward
- 6:35through hardship or through whatever
- 6:36life throws at them. I think like us
- 6:38women, we just carry a world on our
- 6:41shoulders. I mean, we rebuilt Europe
- 6:43after the Second World War. We ruled the
- 6:45world like Beyoncé says.
- 6:47And uh yeah, I mean, behind every
- 6:50experience in life, there's always
- 6:52um a lesson that we learn. And uh we
- 6:56have to be great grateful for for all
- 6:58those lessons, even for the people that
- 7:01that leave you with scars because
- 7:04they just make us better.
- 7:07And what doesn't kill you makes you
- 7:09stronger.
- 7:11I'm not thinking of future partners. I'm
- 7:12just thinking of raising my kids, maybe
- 7:15when they're older or something.
- 7:17Uh right now, I'm just so busy with my
- 7:20career and my life.
- 7:30I would say to that girl back in her 20s
- 7:32to enjoy more. I think like women, as
- 7:35time goes by, we just acquire this new
- 7:37confidence, you know?
- 7:39Uh even even though we're we don't look
- 7:41as perfect as in our 20s, but like
- 7:44somehow we accept the way we are, you
- 7:46know, and and
- 7:47accept ourselves more. At least I I see
- 7:50that with my friends. I see that in me.
- 7:52So
- 7:53all those 20-year-old girls, you know,
- 7:55out there who are like trying really
- 7:57hard, just you know, just enjoy because
- 8:00it's beautiful to be to just be yourself
- 8:02and accept who you are. When I started
- 8:05with the crossover in the US back then,
- 8:08the world was pretty closed up to the
- 8:10idea of Latin artists singing in English
- 8:12and that was a whole like revolution in
- 8:14my life, you know. It was
- 8:17uh the crossover to the Anglo market and
- 8:20at that time I had so much to prove, you
- 8:22know. I I wanted to show what I was
- 8:25about, what
- 8:26what Latinos were about, what
- 8:29um
- 8:30I had so much to say. Uh
- 8:34and now I still have a lot to say, but I
- 8:37feel more at ease, you know. So those
- 8:40insecurities
- 8:42are gone and now I just have
- 8:44this immense love for what I do.
- 8:52There were a lot of intellectual
- 8:53challenges for me because at the time I
- 8:56really didn't speak English as fluently
- 8:57as I do now. So I had to write my own
- 9:00songs in English and I used to do it
- 9:02with the
- 9:03rhyming dictionary and a thesaurus and
- 9:06um a Bob Dylan book and and um
- 9:10yeah, it was it was a a whole
- 9:13uh different time for artists, for Latin
- 9:16artists, for Spanish for music in
- 9:18Spanish and
- 9:19um there were no social there was no
- 9:22social media. So I had to really, you
- 9:24know, talk the talk and walk the walk
- 9:26and and uh and fight. I was very
- 9:29perseverant.
- 9:31So I remember that time as a time of
- 9:33challenges,
- 9:34but also amazing achievements.
- 9:38It was a real blessing
- 9:40to to travel the world and
- 9:43and be in touch with so many different
- 9:44cultures and sort of learn from those
- 9:46cultures, too,
- 9:48which is what has shaped me as an artist
- 9:50and as a as a person that I am today.
- 9:52So, that was like kind of the door
- 9:55opening to a new universe for me.
- 10:04There were so many gatekeepers in the
- 10:06industry who were like, "Oh, no, no, no,
- 10:08no. We're not going to play that song,
- 10:09Hips Don't Lie. That's going to be like
- 10:11uh
- 10:11that's
- 10:13what it mean in Barranquilla se baila
- 10:14así. Like that had I mean, if you think
- 10:16about it, Hips Don't Lie has instruments
- 10:19typical from the
- 10:21Colombian folklore in there,
- 10:24you know? And that was
- 10:27such a big song for me in the US. It it
- 10:29broke so many records, but at first
- 10:31there were so many people people who
- 10:33were closed up to the idea of that song,
- 10:35even playing on American radio. And then
- 10:37La Tortura also was one of the first
- 10:39songs that actually played in Spanish on
- 10:41American radio. That was a whole
- 10:43different moment, a whole different era,
- 10:45you know, where Latin artists weren't
- 10:48taken as seriously as they are today.
- 10:50So, I had a lot to
- 10:52demonstrate, you know, a lot of
- 10:54convincing to do. But it turned out
- 10:56great.
- 11:04That song was just so good and I I
- 11:07remember us in the studio just like
- 11:08dancing to it and jumping and like
- 11:10celebrating because we knew the hate
- 11:12that we had. And I knew that for the for
- 11:14the people who understood the lyrics,
- 11:16um
- 11:17they were going to click also in a
- 11:19different way, but but it was just
- 11:22pure catharsis, you know? I really
- 11:23needed to write at that point and write
- 11:26about my feelings and what I was going
- 11:28through and and not have any um censor
- 11:32any banning in the lyrics of that song.
- 11:33So, I just went for it and and I think
- 11:36it was very therapeutic. I needed it.
- 11:37Like after I after that song came out
- 11:40and I wrote that song, I was like, "I
- 11:42feel lighter."
- 11:44You know? And I feel like a lot of
- 11:46people, a lot of women who have been
- 11:48going through this
- 11:49something similar, people who I run into
- 11:52in the streets or you know, they they
- 11:54were telling me how important that was
- 11:56for them, how you know, sometimes we
- 11:58just need someone to speak for others or
- 12:01be the voi- be the voice of others. The
- 12:03human experience thrives on
- 12:05identification. We need to identify with
- 12:08each other. We need to feel that what
- 12:10you're going through is the same that
- 12:11I'm going through, you know, that it's
- 12:12not so different, that we all go through
- 12:15pain and struggle and hardship and um
- 12:19and we also have
- 12:20enjoy the beauty of this life with its
- 12:22ups and downs, you know.
- 12:29It's been the best tour of my entire
- 12:31life. We've broken all the records. We
- 12:33played 14 shows in Mexico City on a
- 12:36stadium. We're going to play another 12
- 12:38stadiums in in Spain. We went to Latin
- 12:40America twice. We going back to America
- 12:43twice.
- 12:44Um there's still so much we're going to
- 12:46do. We're going to be playing Egypt at
- 12:48the pyramids. I have so many iconic
- 12:50places. I just played in Copacabana in
- 12:52front of 2 and 1/2 million people. 2 and
- 12:541/2 million people on the beach. That is
- 12:56insane. It was just one of the craziest
- 12:58experiences of my career. And also, when
- 13:01it's not summer, my kids come with me on
- 13:03tour. We have a traveling uh house with
- 13:06us, like family comes with us, their
- 13:08friends come with us,
- 13:10uh teachers um and so, I think like but
- 13:14they go back to school. So, it's not
- 13:17like they're home school, but we build
- 13:18this kind of balance around them that
- 13:21their lives and mine that I think is
- 13:23working. I I know how I do it, but I'm
- 13:26with them as much as I can. Uh even when
- 13:29there's show days like I'm with them in
- 13:31the morning well in the morning they
- 13:33study then we, you know, have lunch,
- 13:36spend the afternoon, then I
- 13:38go get ready um and then have dinner
- 13:42again,
- 13:43put them to sleep uh when there's no
- 13:45shows, you know, and so like I always
- 13:48manage to be with them. That's why I
- 13:49don't have any social life because I'm
- 13:50like, "Okay,
- 13:52my kids the stage, my kids the stage,
- 13:54you know." So it's like that's how
- 13:56that's how my life oscillates right now
- 13:58between them and
- 13:59and and my commitments. You know,
- 14:01there's there's so much exciting stuff
- 14:03going on around this tour. This tour has
- 14:06just given me amazing moments on stage
- 14:08of just communion with my with between
- 14:11my fans and me. That dialogue that
- 14:14doesn't stop between them and me and
- 14:16it's showing me one more time and
- 14:18proving to me one more time that they're
- 14:19the best fans in the world. My fans have
- 14:22been there for me through the thick and
- 14:24thin, through the good and the bad
- 14:25times. They've been family to me. So
- 14:27every time I perform in front of them I
- 14:30feel I'm surrounded by family. How they
- 14:31defend me, fight for me, accompany me,
- 14:34understand me, forgive my flaws
- 14:37and and just surround me with their
- 14:38love. I just feel
- 14:40that it's all worth it.
