Shadowbanned? Do This to BLOW UP Your Channel — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00One month ago, I shadowbanned one of my
- 0:02channels and I went from this amount of
- 0:04views to this. The same happened for my
- 0:06video on another channel that went from
- 0:07blowing up with views like this to this.
- 0:10Now, whether shadow banning is a thing
- 0:12or not, I wanted to figure out why this
- 0:14happened. So, I did. My views went down
- 0:16because of one simple mistake. In this
- 0:18video, I want to tell you what I've
- 0:20learned so you can avoid cannibalizing
- 0:21your views. Here's what happened. On
- 0:23April 16th, I uploaded this video.
- 0:25Within 3 days after that upload, views
- 0:28of the other videos dropped by 65%. Yes,
- 0:31you've heard that right. My other videos
- 0:33stopped performing well. Not because
- 0:35their clickthrough rate dropped. I mean,
- 0:36it has even increased. By the way,
- 0:38talking about clickthrough rate, you can
- 0:39download my free thumbnail templates to
- 0:41create thumbnails like this, this, and
- 0:43this in minutes. Free link below.
- 0:45Anyways, my other videos suddenly
- 0:47stopped getting views. And mind you,
- 0:48they were not new videos. Their average
- 0:50viewer also didn't change besides their
- 0:52clickthrough rate that even increased.
- 0:54None of the stats changed much. So
- 0:56before I tell you why they then stopped
- 0:58getting views, do you understand the
- 1:00impact the impact of uploading the wrong
- 1:02video and the impact of simply not
- 1:05uploading when a video is blowing up on
- 1:07your channel? Because sometimes the best
- 1:09thing you can do is to not upload. This
- 1:11may go against your conditioning because
- 1:13everyone is telling you to upload daily
- 1:15or at least consistently. But when a
- 1:17video is blowing up, sometimes it's
- 1:19better to not upload your new video.
- 1:20Now, before I explain when and when not
- 1:23to upload a new video based on my data,
- 1:25please know that you can always keep
- 1:28creating new videos. I'm just saying
- 1:30don't publish them yet in a specific
- 1:32situation. Before I tell you more about
- 1:33that, first, how did I cannibalize my
- 1:36views? Well, take a look at this
- 1:37example. Video A is about pets. Video B
- 1:40is about dogs and video C is about
- 1:42golden retrievers. If video B is blowing
- 1:44up, you likely don't want to publish
- 1:46video C yet. However, if video C, that
- 1:48is about golden retrievers, is blowing
- 1:50up, you likely can publish video B,
- 1:52which is about dogs, without hurting the
- 1:54views on video C. Why is this the case?
- 1:57Well, because a high percentage of
- 1:59Golden Retriever owners or enthusiasts
- 2:01will watch a video about dogs, whereas a
- 2:04low percentage of dog owners or
- 2:06enthusiasts care about a specific race
- 2:09like golden retrievers. So, what was the
- 2:11first mistake that I made? Well, my
- 2:13video about a broad topic blew up, but I
- 2:15decided to upload one of the next videos
- 2:17about a narrow subniche topic that only
- 2:19a few people who watched the broad video
- 2:21cared about. And as a result, the views
- 2:23on the whole channel dropped by 30 to
- 2:2590% even. Now, here are two technical
- 2:27reasons why this probably happened on my
- 2:29channel. Disclaimer, YouTube has never
- 2:30publicly mentioned these, but my daytime
- 2:33research strongly implies that these
- 2:35play probably a big role. Reason one is
- 2:38about a lower session time. Because if a
- 2:40viewer clicks your new video expecting
- 2:42content like your previous uploads but
- 2:44gets something different, they don't
- 2:46watch it, which hurts your session
- 2:47duration. And YouTube can't now show
- 2:50your new videos to your viewers, which
- 2:52is really, really something you want to
- 2:54avoid. Something also to avoid is to
- 2:57lose money on paid tools and their
- 3:00subscription models. So, I made a free
- 3:01Google sheet with over 80 free YouTube
- 3:03tools that I use. No sponsors, no
- 3:05affiliate links. I will put a free link
- 3:07in the comments. And when you are there,
- 3:09comment the word WhatsApp group if you
- 3:11want me to send you a free invite to our
- 3:12group chat with other YouTube creators
- 3:14or comment something like this that a
- 3:15lot of people did under my recent video
- 3:17and help each other grow this year.
- 3:18Anyways, reason number two is about the
- 3:20decrease in relevance score if you
- 3:22publish the wrong video topic. Let me
- 3:24explain this. Similar to what in
- 3:26advertising is called a lookalike
- 3:28audience, uploading something that
- 3:30deviates too far weakens your relevant
- 3:33score. In the same way, a Facebook pixel
- 3:36performs poorly if you send irrelevant
- 3:39random traffic to your website. If you
- 3:40don't know what a Facebook pixel is,
- 3:42it's basically like training a dog to to
- 3:44do something you want in exchange for a
- 3:46treat. If you roared, all kinds of
- 3:49behavior like barking, everything
- 3:52random. Then, of course, it forgets what
- 3:54you actually want. As a result, the
- 3:56YouTube picture shows your rabbit videos
- 3:58to dog owners or doesn't even show your
- 4:00rabbit videos at all because nobody
- 4:02inside your audience cares about them
- 4:03and nobody outside your audience either
- 4:06because your YouTube pixel is still used
- 4:08to giving you impressions from dog
- 4:10owners, not from rabbits. Now, you would
- 4:12think that YouTube is smarter than this,
- 4:14but my data shows me that this is how I
- 4:17can oblige my views multiple times, not
- 4:20just once. I simply uploaded the wrong
- 4:22video after the right video was already
- 4:24blowing up. And this may leave you with
- 4:25the question, how do I know in my case
- 4:27when not to upload a new video while
- 4:29still being free to experiment with new
- 4:31topics and new formats? Well, comment
- 4:34the word methods below and I will send
- 4:35you my three methods that I now use to
- 4:38avoid cannibalizing my views that you
- 4:40can replicate for your channel all for
- 4:42free. That being said, if there was one
- 4:44YouTube setting that I also found about
- 4:46too late, it is this one. I wish I knew
- 4:47it before one of my videos blew up
- 4:49because I left a lot of views and money
- 4:51on the table. I talk about it in this
- 4:52video to you there or not.
