Full transcript
- 0:00in this video you're going to learn key
- 0:01things you need to know about a
- 0:02medication that's often used to treat
- 0:04depression called Sertraline which is
- 0:06also known by its brand name lustral in
- 0:09this video we're going to cover what
- 0:10Sertraline is and how it works how long
- 0:13it usually takes to see effects once
- 0:14you've started the medicine who can as
- 0:17well as can't take it how you take it
- 0:19and what to do if you accidentally take
- 0:21too much as well as side effects and
- 0:23finally interactions with other
- 0:25medicines now these sections are time
- 0:28stamped so if you want to skip ahead to
- 0:29a particular section of the video please
- 0:31feel free to do so but I would recommend
- 0:33you stay around for the entire video
- 0:35because it's going to be packed full of
- 0:36useful information so first of all let's
- 0:39see how Sertraline works well Sertraline
- 0:42is a type of antidepressant known as a
- 0:44selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
- 0:46you also may know this as an SSRI now I
- 0:50know this sounds quite complex but
- 0:52actually we can break it down into
- 0:53something quite simple so serotonin is a
- 0:56chemical that's circulating in the brain
- 0:58and it's commonly known as the field a
- 1:00good chemical if the chemical is taken
- 1:02up then the circulating levels drop
- 1:04which may in turn make your mood drop
- 1:06now Sertraline works by blocking The
- 1:09receptors in the brain that take up
- 1:11serotonin which in theory should leave
- 1:13more serotonin circulating around your
- 1:15brain and in theory hopefully make your
- 1:17mood better now as well as depression it
- 1:20can also be used to try and treat other
- 1:21conditions including post-traumatic
- 1:23stress disorder which is known as PTSD
- 1:26or obsessive compulsive disorder also
- 1:28known as OCD here in the UK sertralines
- 1:31available on prescription only meaning
- 1:33that your doctor is going to have to
- 1:34prescribe it for you and it comes as
- 1:36tablets now in terms of when you might
- 1:39start to expect to see the effect of
- 1:41Sertraline this is obviously going to
- 1:42vary from Individual to individual but
- 1:45usually it takes between four to six
- 1:47weeks for sertraline to work fully
- 1:49although you should usually start to
- 1:50feel better after two weeks but again I
- 1:53want to stress that this is going to
- 1:54vary depending on individuals so who can
- 1:57and cannot take Sertraline or Sertraline
- 1:59can be taken by most adults over the age
- 2:01of 18 but if you've got diabetes it can
- 2:03make your blood sugars a little bit more
- 2:05unstable so it's going to be important
- 2:07to keep a close eye on these now like
- 2:09any medicine surgery may not be suitable
- 2:11for everyone and you should tell your
- 2:13doctor if you've ever had an allergic
- 2:15reaction to surgery if you've got heart
- 2:17problems because occasionally search
- 2:19link can give you an irregular heartbeat
- 2:21or if you're trying to get pregnant or
- 2:22you're breastfeeding as well as if
- 2:24you've got an eye condition called
- 2:26glaucoma or if you've got epilepsy
- 2:28because Sertraline May slightly increase
- 2:30your risk of having a fit or a seizure
- 2:32so now let's discuss how and when to
- 2:34take it so the Practical things that you
- 2:36need to know well certainly Lane comes
- 2:38as many different ranges of tablets
- 2:40including 25 50 or 100 milligrams now
- 2:43the usual starting dose of Sertraline is
- 2:4450 milligrams once a day in adults but
- 2:46your doctor may start you want a lower
- 2:48dose then increase it gradually and this
- 2:50can be done up to a maximum dose of 200
- 2:52milligrams a day if you've got liver
- 2:54problems your doctor may also give you a
- 2:57lower dose now the usual dose of
- 2:59Sertraline for children will generally
- 3:01be lower than for adults but for
- 3:03children aged 6 to 12 it's normally
- 3:05started at 25 milligrams a day and for
- 3:07children 13 to 17 is 50 milligrams a day
- 3:10now Sertraline is normally taken once a
- 3:13day and it can be taken with or without
- 3:15food you can take it at any time of day
- 3:17but try to stick to the same time each
- 3:19day and if you find that you're having
- 3:21trouble sleeping then it's best to take
- 3:23it in the morning now if you start to
- 3:25feel better after you've started take
- 3:27Sertraline that's fantastic news but
- 3:29please don't suddenly stop taking it
- 3:31it's likely that the doctor is going to
- 3:33advise you to continue taking it for at
- 3:35least six to 12 months and if you stay
- 3:37going to stop taking it and they're
- 3:39going to want to reduce it slowly over
- 3:41several weeks if you stop taking it too
- 3:43quickly then research has shown that
- 3:45your depression can return so it's
- 3:47really important to get this right now
- 3:49if you accidentally forget to take your
- 3:51Sertraline don't worry it's an easy
- 3:53mistake that we can all make but try to
- 3:55remember to take your medicine the next
- 3:56day don't take two tablets to make up
- 3:59for a missed one now if you take too
- 4:01much Sertraline then the side effects
- 4:03are going to vary from person to person
- 4:05and we'll cover these in the next
- 4:06section of the video so let's now
- 4:08discuss side effects well because like
- 4:10all medicines Sertraline can cause side
- 4:12effects although not everybody gets them
- 4:14now common side effects usually happen
- 4:17in more than one in 100 people and these
- 4:19can include things like feeling sick
- 4:21which is medically known as nausea
- 4:23headaches being unable to sleep or
- 4:26feeling very sleepy as well as diarrhea
- 4:28dry mouth feeling dizzy as well as
- 4:31feeling tired or weak now thankfully the
- 4:34serious side effects are less common and
- 4:36they usually affect less than one in 100
- 4:38people but these include things like
- 4:40changes in your periods such as heavy
- 4:42bleeding spotting or even bleeding in
- 4:45between periods weight gain or weight
- 4:47loss without trying and that can be very
- 4:49common with most ssris you should seek
- 4:53urgent medical attention if you develop
- 4:55feelings of overwhelming happiness as
- 4:57well as excessive enthusiasm or
- 4:59excitement or a feeling of restlessness
- 5:02that means you can't sit or stand still
- 5:04you should also see a doctor if you
- 5:05notice the whites of your eyes have
- 5:07turned yellow or your skin has got a
- 5:09yellow tinge to it this may be less
- 5:10noticeable on darker skin but these
- 5:13could potentially be signs of liver
- 5:14problems also see your doctor if you
- 5:17cough up blood or you've got blood in
- 5:19your pee or if you've got black or red
- 5:21poo or blood in your vomit because these
- 5:23could be signs of bleeding from the gut
- 5:24you should also see your doctor if
- 5:26you're bleeding from the gums or you get
- 5:28bruises that appear without a reason or
- 5:30get bigger if you take Sertraline for
- 5:33over a year then there is a slightly
- 5:35increased risk of developing diabetes so
- 5:37it's going to be be important to monitor
- 5:38your blood sugars when you're taking it
- 5:40and there may be some other side effects
- 5:42such as reduced sex drive or
- 5:44difficulties getting an erection and
- 5:46again if you get any of these speak to
- 5:48your doctor so you can make a plan
- 5:50together about whether you continue the
- 5:51medicine you lower the dose or you look
- 5:53at Alternatives now this isn't
- 5:55exhaustive or full list of the side
- 5:57effects and for a full list please make
- 5:59sure you read the information leaflet on
- 6:01the inside of your medicine packet
- 6:02before you start taking the medicine I
- 6:04think it's always best to be informed
- 6:06about what you're putting into your own
- 6:08body so now let's move on and talk about
- 6:10interactions or cautions with other
- 6:12medicines now some medicines don't mix
- 6:14well with sertraline and you should tell
- 6:16your doctor if you're taking any
- 6:17medicines that affect your heartbeat
- 6:19because as a
- 6:20and you should tell your doctor if
- 6:21you're taking any medicines that affect
- 6:23your heartbeat because as I've already
- 6:25mentioned Sertraline can make your
- 6:27heartbeat faster or it can cause an
- 6:29irregular heartbeat you should also tell
- 6:31them if you're taking other medicines
- 6:33for depression or if you've taken any in
- 6:35the past because some antidepressants
- 6:37can affect Sertraline and cause very
- 6:39high blood pressure even after you've
- 6:40stopped taking them in general
- 6:42Sertraline is thought to be okay to take
- 6:44in pregnancy as well as if you're
- 6:46breastfeeding but you should always talk
- 6:47to your Midwife or your doctor if you
- 6:49are pregnant or you're planning to get
- 6:51pregnant so that you can weigh up the
- 6:52risks and benefits of taking this
- 6:53medicine against your own mental health
- 6:55as well as the health of that of your
- 6:57baby that brings us to the end of the
- 6:59video I hope you found it useful and
- 7:00informative and for a full list of the
- 7:02resources and references that I use to
- 7:04make the video please check out the
- 7:05description box and if you enjoyed the
- 7:07video please remember to give it a
- 7:08thumbs up leave me a comment if you want
- 7:10to share experience of this medicine and
- 7:12subscribe to the channel if you've not
- 7:13done so already once again thanks for
- 7:15watching and until next time bye
