- 0:01Well, my dear friends, today, on
- 0:02Father's Day, I decided to give this
- 0:04sermon to everyone here in the
- 0:05apostolate who is a son or daughter.
- 0:08And so, on this day, Father's Day, this
- 0:11sermon is addressed to all children.
- 0:15Dear children, pay attention. This
- 0:18sermon was created with you in mind. I
- 0:22believe many things in this sermon will
- 0:25truly broaden your horizons regarding
- 0:27the relationships you have with your
- 0:30parents and with the priests, who are
- 0:32also your fathers in the spiritual life
- 0:34, in your life with God. Perhaps some
- 0:39of you already know or have seen that
- 0:41there is a department of the American
- 0:44government, the Bureau of Labor
- 0:46Statistics, that conducts a survey
- 0:49every year to calculate how much time
- 0:51we spend with people throughout our
- 0:54lives. And, in general, these annual
- 0:57surveys from the American government
- 0:59provide some data that is very relevant
- 1:01to us today. And, based on these
- 1:04figures and surveys, the calculation
- 1:06from the United States Bureau of Labor
- 1:09Statistics is as follows: on average,
- 1:14they show that during the first 18
- 1:16years of our life, of your life as a
- 1:19child, you live with your parents
- 1:22almost every day. 365 days a year for
- 1:2718 years. 365 days multiplied by 18
- 1:32years. That comes to approximately
- 1:376,000, 6,570 days of close, personal,
- 1:43face-to-face time with your parents
- 1:45until you are 18. After leaving home
- 1:51for college or work, the average number
- 1:54of visits drops drastically. It is
- 1:58possible to estimate that if you visit
- 2:01your parents after the age of 18, once
- 2:04you have left home for work or studies,
- 2:07many will see their parents about 10 to
- 2:1012 days a year. This is common for
- 2:14those who live in different cities,
- 2:16which is my case, for example. I can
- 2:18affirm that these numbers are
- 2:20absolutely real. I can state from my
- 2:22own experience, I see my father about
- 2:2410 to 12 days a year. And if your
- 2:29parents live for another 30 years after
- 2:32you turn 18, you will only have about
- 2:35300 days left with them after your 18th
- 2:37birthday, until they pass away. If they
- 2:44die before then, it will be even fewer
- 2:46days. I myself see you much more than I
- 2:50see my father throughout the year, much
- 2:53more. Even if a spiritual direction or
- 2:57a conversation with a priest takes time
- 2:59to schedule, I still see you much more
- 3:01than I see my father. Despite
- 3:05everything, I see my father in person
- 3:07and he sees me much less, right? This
- 3:09is something to think about. And
- 3:13calculating the ratio between the 6,570
- 3:16days until age 18 and the 300 days on
- 3:20average after, the total is 6,870 days.
- 3:26This means—and this is truly
- 3:29impressive—that by the time you turn
- 3:3218, you have spent 95.6%of all the
- 3:38in-person time you will have with your
- 3:39father. I would like to use the data
- 3:44from this research to draw some
- 3:46conclusions for us here in the chapel,
- 3:49who are someone's children and still
- 3:51have a father. We, as children, tend to
- 3:56think we still have a lot of time left
- 3:58with our parents. This study shows that
- 4:02after age 18, we are left with very
- 4:04little in-person time with our parents.
- 4:10Knowing this shouldn't cause us sadness
- 4:12, but it should make us reflect on our
- 4:14priorities. If you have already spent
- 4:19more than 95%of your time with your
- 4:22father by age 18, then the remaining
- 4:24less than 5%should be seen as
- 4:26infinitely more valuable. Remember that
- 4:32the rarer something is, the more value
- 4:34it has. The practical question here in
- 4:38this sermon is as follows: How to make
- 4:43the most of the father God gave me
- 4:46before age 18, and how to make the most
- 4:49of the father God gave me after age 18.
- 4:54Before age 18, because it is the
- 4:56greatest in-person contact I will have
- 4:59with my father, the greatest number of
- 5:01hours, but over a relatively smaller
- 5:03span of my life. 18 years compared to
- 5:0770, 80, perhaps 90 years. So, I need to
- 5:13know how to use this time well to get
- 5:16the best fruit in a short, relatively
- 5:18short period of my life. And after age
- 5:2318, because most of us will only have
- 5:25that remaining less than 5%of all
- 5:27in-person time left in my life with my
- 5:32father until he passes away. And even
- 5:35less time if he dies sooner. Many of us
- 5:39will see our parents for about 10 or 12
- 5:42days a year after age 18, if we move
- 5:45out. So, dear children, some advice—
- 5:52firstly, and it is the most important
- 5:55of all, right? Pray a lot for your
- 6:00parents. Pray a lot for your parents.
- 6:06You need to know that in any organized
- 6:09group of people—and your family is
- 6:11just that, an organized group of people
- 6:14—there is a head who must lead the
- 6:16others toward the good. Fathers possess
- 6:21a real power of governance over your
- 6:24mother and over you. This authority is
- 6:28not a privilege; it is a responsibility
- 6:30of protection for your good, for the
- 6:33good of your mother. And in the way God
- 6:38organized things in the real world,
- 6:41certain graces destined for your family
- 6:44go from God to your mother and to you,
- 6:47children. through your father. That is
- 6:53the general rule for many graces. The
- 6:57wife and children receive several
- 7:01graces, in principle, only through the
- 7:04father, the husband. If your father is
- 7:09in a state of grace and fulfills his
- 7:12duties, he acts as a shield for the
- 7:14spiritual life of your mother and of
- 7:16you. The prayers of your father for
- 7:20your mother and for you have an
- 7:22efficacy that no other prayer from any
- 7:25other person has. Except for the bishop
- 7:30and the pope in certain things, because
- 7:33your father has a special connection
- 7:35with you, a bond that only he has with
- 7:38you and no one else. He brought you
- 7:42about. a union of natural authority and
- 7:47also an authority that comes from his
- 7:50marriage to your mother. And the
- 7:54devil's strategy is to strike the
- 7:58shepherd, the head, your father, so
- 8:01that the sheep, who are your mother and
- 8:05you, scatter. The devil is a good, a
- 8:10good strategist. You know that in Greek
- 8:14, strategos is a military soldier, and
- 8:16a strategy is a military war plan. The
- 8:19devil is a good strategist. He is very
- 8:22clever, because he is an angel and has
- 8:24a capacity for knowledge of things that
- 8:25is truly impressive, because he is an
- 8:27angel. Angels are like that, they are
- 8:30much more intelligent than we are. And
- 8:34he knows that to destroy your family,
- 8:36he must attack the command base of your
- 8:38home, which is your father. The devil's
- 8:44main objective against your father is
- 8:46not just to make him commit sins. But
- 8:50the devil wants to block the channel of
- 8:52God's graces to your family. When a
- 8:56father sins gravely against God, he
- 8:58abandons the spiritual governance of
- 9:00the family, failing to care properly
- 9:02for the family and your souls, letting
- 9:05you do whatever you want. God's
- 9:08protection over your mother and over
- 9:11you is weakened, and you become easier
- 9:14targets for the devil. There are
- 9:18special attacks that demons use to
- 9:21neutralize your father at home and harm
- 9:23the spiritual life of all of you at
- 9:26home. The devil's first weapon is to
- 9:31try to make your father start to forget
- 9:34about your mother and begin to think
- 9:37that if he were with someone else, that
- 9:39if he had married someone else, then
- 9:42things would be better, life would be
- 9:45happier. But it is all a lie. The devil
- 9:51is very clever and very good at making
- 9:53people think that what they have isn't
- 9:55good enough. that other things would be
- 9:58better, that things would be better
- 10:01with someone else. And he tries to make
- 10:04your father stop thinking clearly so he
- 10:07can't govern your family well. Because
- 10:11the devil knows that when a person is
- 10:13unhappy, sooner or later they break. I
- 10:18remember a conversation once at the
- 10:20seminary garden, some priests, some
- 10:22seminarians—I didn't even have my
- 10:24cassock yet in my first year—and we
- 10:27were talking about a priest over in
- 10:31France who had abandoned everything.
- 10:37And I, still in my innocence as a
- 10:40newcomer to the seminary, without
- 10:42knowing the human soul from within,
- 10:45said with great innocence and frankness
- 10:48, "Father, I don't understand how a
- 10:51priest can do that." Then he said: "
- 10:56Luis, one day you will study the ethics
- 11:02of Aristotle. And when you study the
- 11:05ethics of Aristotle, you will see that
- 11:08the human being was not made to be
- 11:10unhappy. And when he is unhappy, sooner
- 11:15or later he breaks." The devil knows
- 11:19this. So, the devil tries to put it
- 11:23into your father's head that he is
- 11:25unhappy at home. He will do that to you
- 11:28too, you know? But today is Father's
- 11:30Day. We are talking about your father,
- 11:32to make your father sooner or later end
- 11:35up breaking, giving up on everything,
- 11:37and doing something foolish. Secondly,
- 11:41the devil tries to convince your father
- 11:43that the spiritual life is a woman's
- 11:45thing or something like that, or that
- 11:50he is too tired to pray with his
- 11:52children, to educate himself by reading
- 11:55or going to a conference. And many of
- 11:59God's blessings fail to reach you. You
- 12:04can help your father by inviting him to
- 12:07pray, saying, for example, to your
- 12:10father, "Dad, I saw on the chapel's
- 12:15WhatsApp channel that there is a men's
- 12:17rosary today. If you go, it will do us
- 12:19a lot of good." There is a third weapon
- 12:24the devil uses to attack your father.
- 12:27The devil tries to overwhelm your
- 12:29father with financial worries and
- 12:31stress. The devil seeks to create an
- 12:34atmosphere of fear or anger at home and
- 12:37tries to make your father become
- 12:39increasingly different from who God is.
- 12:43The devil does not want your father to
- 12:46be a reflection of God's fatherhood,
- 12:48which is firm, but which cares for us
- 12:50and protects us. God is our universal
- 12:54father, our father who is in heaven.
- 12:58Therefore, pray a lot for your father.
- 13:00It is important for their well-being,
- 13:01for your mother’s, and for yours as
- 13:03well. The devil tries to put it into
- 13:07children's heads that their father is
- 13:09an obstacle, a nuisance to doing what
- 13:12they want. The devil wants you to stay
- 13:16outside the protection of your father.
- 13:18Do not listen to those things and you
- 13:20will be fine. Your father has the right
- 13:24to command the demons to stop
- 13:26influencing you. Your father has this
- 13:30power. It comes from his natural
- 13:34headship of the home and the sacrament
- 13:36of matrimony. When they pray for you,
- 13:40inside and outside your home, those
- 13:44prayers work. God gave your father the
- 13:49power of governance over the whole
- 13:51family. He can send demons away from
- 13:54the house through prayer and sacrifice.
- 13:58Therefore, always stand by your father.
- 14:02Even if he has flaws, and we all do,
- 14:04stick with your father. And if he has a
- 14:09flaw, learn how to deal with it. That
- 14:11is just how life is. The devil tries to
- 14:16keep your father ignorant of this power
- 14:18that he has. A father who does not know
- 14:22he has spiritual authority over demons
- 14:24is like a soldier with a weapon who
- 14:26doesn't know he can fire it. The devil
- 14:31strives to make your father forget this
- 14:33paternal authority so he feels helpless
- 14:35before your problems. Stay with your
- 14:39parents, and he will help you in a very
- 14:41important way. Pray with your father
- 14:45and for your father. Ask for his
- 14:47blessing when leaving and arriving home
- 14:49. Be at peace with his decisions. The
- 14:54devil attacks your father because he
- 14:56knows if your father is holy, your
- 14:57family will be protected from his
- 14:59attacks. Love for your father is not
- 15:05just a feeling, it is a matter of
- 15:07justice. We cannot adequately repay our
- 15:11parents for the gift of life. Without
- 15:15your father, you would not exist. And
- 15:19now you exist forever because of your
- 15:22father. Therefore, honoring your father
- 15:26is a fair form of repayment. It is fair
- 15:30, but you cannot pay it all back in
- 15:32full. Life is something that is
- 15:35priceless. Remember, we will never
- 15:38repay our father enough for bringing us
- 15:41into existence and everything else,
- 15:43even if he has flaws. Honoring our
- 15:46father is an act of acknowledging that
- 15:49he is our very origin. This father of
- 15:52ours does not depend on his perfection,
- 15:54but on the dignity of the role he
- 15:57fulfills. He made you exist. That is
- 16:00priceless. Cultivate reverence in the
- 16:04way you speak to your father and
- 16:06respect for the history of sacrifices
- 16:09he built before you were born. Our
- 16:12father went through many difficult
- 16:14things. We can't even imagine. And he
- 16:17made it this far through many hardships
- 16:18. So, take that into account. You have
- 16:23inner storms, moments of annoyance,
- 16:25indignation, disappointment, and anger.
- 16:28Your father has them too. They are
- 16:32human beings, man. And don't you want
- 16:35your father to have patience with you,
- 16:37to understand you, and to help you? So
- 16:40why shouldn't you be that way with your
- 16:42father? Does it only go from him to you
- 16:45? When advice or an order seems
- 16:50difficult, remember that your father's
- 16:52authority comes from God for your
- 16:54protection and growth. Your father is a
- 16:59human being marked by original sin. He
- 17:02has limits, fatigue, and eventually the
- 17:05weaknesses of age. Your father no
- 17:08longer has the same energy as when he
- 17:11was the 10, 12, 14, 16, or 18 years old
- 17:15that you are now. Patience with your
- 17:19father is a way to repay the patience
- 17:22they had with you in childhood. Be
- 17:27patient with your parents 'silences,
- 17:29their repetitions, and your father's
- 17:30limitations. Remember that one day you
- 17:34will need that same patience from your
- 17:37own children. In moments of conflict,
- 17:40love peace. Do not keep responding in
- 17:44the heat of the moment. Prefer peace
- 17:46and harmony at home, rather than
- 17:47wanting to be right. And spending time
- 17:53with your parents is a matter of wisdom
- 17:55. Time is a unique resource that cannot
- 17:58be recovered. We have seen that we will
- 18:03have little time with our parents, less
- 18:05and less as life goes on, just a few
- 18:08days a year. Your parents have priority
- 18:14over friends and strangers, but parents
- 18:16have theirs too. Your children need to
- 18:19spend time with friends. Do not
- 18:21monopolize your children all the time.
- 18:23But children, do not wait to value your
- 18:26father's presence only when they are no
- 18:28longer around. Time spent on trivial
- 18:32conversations, listening to their
- 18:34stories, even ones you already know,
- 18:36and being physically present, is an
- 18:38investment in better goods. After your
- 18:42father passes, when your father dies—
- 18:44and it will happen—you will have a
- 18:47clear conscience and good memories,
- 18:49instead of condemning yourself because
- 18:51you didn't give time when it was
- 18:53possible for your father and now it is
- 18:56no longer. Disconnect, disconnect from
- 19:03your screens, go talk to your father
- 19:06now during this little week of vacation
- 19:08at home. I used to sit on the sofa at
- 19:12home drinking chimarrão with my father
- 19:13, talking about life. It's only 10 days
- 19:17a year, now only next year. When you
- 19:20are dying, you won't want to have a
- 19:22cell phone in your hand. You will want
- 19:26the people you love to be with you. And
- 19:29even then, only certain people. You
- 19:33can't have everyone we love around us,
- 19:35surrounding us, on a hospital bed. I
- 19:41know children wish their parents would
- 19:43spend more time with them. Parents
- 19:46would like that too, but they also have
- 19:49other things they cannot neglect. They
- 19:53also have a father and mother. Maybe
- 19:55they are your grandparents. They have a
- 19:58boss, clients, suppliers. Your mother,
- 20:01they have to take care of themselves,
- 20:04go to confession, pray. Ask for advice.
- 20:11Emergencies happen, illnesses, other
- 20:14children to look after, violin lessons
- 20:16for one, speech therapy for another,
- 20:18judo here, buying poster board there,
- 20:20taking someone to a friend's house,
- 20:23friends who need advice, bills to pay,
- 20:25tax returns, gathering documents for
- 20:27that, etc., right? Have patience and as
- 20:31soon as possible your father will see
- 20:34you. In the meantime, go do what you
- 20:36have to do. Don't wait for your father
- 20:39to have to ask. And a final word for
- 20:42children who have complicated parents.
- 20:45This is also important. You know, I
- 20:49tell my students this, those who are my
- 20:51students know it well. No one is born
- 20:55ready, not even the saints. The idea
- 20:59that saints were born ready or perfect
- 21:02is a myth that the saints' own
- 21:03biographies correct, right? Holiness is
- 21:07not the absence of defects from the
- 21:09start. It is the victory of grace over
- 21:12our nature. It is a constant struggle.
- 21:16All the saints had great struggles
- 21:18against their own defects. And we have
- 21:20several accounts of saints who did
- 21:21foolish things. Abraham did foolish
- 21:24things. Saint Joan of Arc also did
- 21:26things she shouldn't have. She
- 21:27disobeyed what the angel said. He said
- 21:30that now she was going to suffer more.
- 21:32He told her not to escape from the
- 21:33tower. She jumped out the window. Then
- 21:35she was caught again and the angel told
- 21:37her she was going to suffer more. Saint
- 21:41Gemma Galgani once lied and her
- 21:43guardian angel gave her such a scolding
- 21:45that she felt embarrassed. And other
- 21:49stories. Saint Jerome, for example, you
- 21:52know that he, how many times do you see
- 21:53him with a stone in his hand, it's very
- 21:55simple. He had a terrible tongue, he
- 21:58was sarcast, sarcastic. Sometimes he
- 22:02was rude, impatient. And many people
- 22:05quote the things he wrote, taking a
- 22:07look at how he would jolt his enemies.
- 22:09He would do penance for it later,
- 22:11striking his chest with a stone. That
- 22:13is why he has a stone in his hand.
- 22:16Saint Gregory the Great, too, he was
- 22:18blunt. He once wrote to a priest in
- 22:20Rome: "You are dumber than a donkey,"
- 22:22and later he corrected it. He was
- 22:25rather impetuous, he’s Italian, right
- 22:27? Saint Francis de Sales also had to
- 22:29master himself. Saint Augustine, after
- 22:32a bad life, you can imagine how many
- 22:34years he had to do penance and mortify
- 22:36himself to try to purify some of the
- 22:38things that were in his head. Saint
- 22:42Thérèse of the Child Jesus, everyone
- 22:44sees her as a very sweet person, right?
- 22:47But in her childhood, in her early
- 22:49youth, she had a sickly sensitivity.
- 22:52Any criticism made her cry, and then
- 22:54she would cry because she had cried.
- 22:58Until God gave her the grace to free
- 22:59herself from this childishness, and she
- 23:01would dedicate herself more to the love
- 23:03of neighbor, instead of paying
- 23:05attention to her own wounded feelings.
- 23:09Before founding the Order of the
- 23:10Camillians, Saint Camillus was a man
- 23:12with a very complicated life, right? He
- 23:14was a soldier addicted to gambling, he
- 23:17bet money and even lost the shirt off
- 23:19his back. He had nothing left to bet.
- 23:22He left the bet shirtless and would go
- 23:25beg for alms at the doors of churches.
- 23:28He was quarrelsome. And later he would
- 23:31have a stunning conversion, but he
- 23:33would have to fight against the
- 23:34temptation of gambling and his
- 23:35impatience for the rest of his life. He
- 23:39would channel his energy into caring
- 23:41for the sick. Saint Bernard of
- 23:44Clairvaux was also a fantastic man,
- 23:46perhaps the most important man of his
- 23:48time, but with an impressive will. But
- 23:50because of that, he expected a lot from
- 23:52others, he was very firm with the monks
- 23:53, and the scoldings he gave were a bit
- 23:55harsh. He would have to learn to
- 23:59correct others with calm. Our parents,
- 24:04too, therefore, be patient with your
- 24:06father; they correct themselves
- 24:08throughout their lives. "Oh, Father,
- 24:11but I have already waited so long." It
- 24:13is your father, too. How many times has
- 24:15he said things that you should have
- 24:17already kept in your head and done
- 24:19without needing to hear them again? So,
- 24:21help each other. But there are cases of
- 24:25children who went through really
- 24:27terrible things with the father they
- 24:29had, things really very bad that left
- 24:31marks and traumas for a lifetime on the
- 24:33son, on the daughter. We are talking
- 24:36about objectively serious and grave
- 24:39matters, not imaginary whims or
- 24:41difficult children, no. Look, I know
- 24:45every story. Once at the hospital there
- 24:49was a young woman, her father was so
- 24:52terrible cheating on her mother inside
- 24:55the house. The children kept leaving,
- 25:00only she remained. There were seven
- 25:01siblings, everyone moved away. No one
- 25:03wanted anything to do with their father
- 25:04anymore. And the father had a stroke,
- 25:08he became hemiplegic, he needed someone
- 25:10to bathe him, because he couldn't do
- 25:12anything alone. And the youngest
- 25:15daughter stayed with him, right? And
- 25:17she helped him, but while she bathed
- 25:20him, she would think: "Now you suffer,
- 25:22you wretch." That is a sin, you know?
- 25:28There are children who really went
- 25:29through some serious things at home,
- 25:30you see? We are not here to judge every
- 25:33father. Some had psychological or
- 25:36psychiatric difficulties, whether
- 25:38greater or lesser, others did not. Some
- 25:42received much guidance, many counsels,
- 25:44much help, many graces. Other parents
- 25:46really received very little in life.
- 25:50Fathers who also went through
- 25:52complicated things when they were
- 25:53children and it left marks on them
- 25:55later. Fathers who knew Jesus Christ
- 25:59and fathers who didn't know Him, or who
- 26:02didn't want to know Him, who knows why.
- 26:06And all of this combines in almost
- 26:08infinite ways. God will know how to
- 26:12weigh the responsibility of each father
- 26:14justly. We are not in a position to do
- 26:16that, nor are we here for that. For
- 26:20these children, I would like to end
- 26:21with a piece of advice that is also a
- 26:23true story. An adult person from other
- 26:27galaxies and other geological eras once
- 26:30told me how they had suffered terrible
- 26:33things in their youth from their own
- 26:36father. Look, things provided for in
- 26:40the Penal Code, okay? These things
- 26:44exist. About how it ended up leading to
- 26:48various psychiatric diagnoses, and how
- 26:50they underwent treatment for these
- 26:52disorders, and how the relationship
- 26:54with the father was practically
- 26:56non-existent, very damaged, because the
- 26:58father was really a very complicated
- 27:00person and it wasn't a lack of desire
- 27:05on the part of this person. But despite
- 27:07everything they had been through with
- 27:09their father, it was the father's own
- 27:11conduct that made family life
- 27:12impossible. And this person told me how
- 27:17they had spent years waiting for an
- 27:19apology from their father, and how it
- 27:21was a burden and a wound in their soul,
- 27:24but that after their conversion, it
- 27:26changed. They no longer insisted that
- 27:31their father apologize. They said: "
- 27:34Because I have Jesus Christ." And so
- 27:38she prayed for him, asking that one day
- 27:41he might also know the truth as she had
- 27:44known it and that it had set her free.
- 27:50To the children who find themselves in
- 27:52this situation, I say: "Seek first the
- 27:54kingdom of God, seek Jesus Christ and a
- 27:56life with God. He is our universal
- 27:59father and all else will be added to
- 28:02you. And we often think, it is our
- 28:04first inclination, of material
- 28:09additions, but we forget the interior
- 28:11additions, the spiritual additions that
- 28:14God gives to those who seek Him first.
- 28:20Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 28:23goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
- 28:25self-control, chastity. These are the
- 28:30first riches that come to us, that are
- 28:32added to us after we seek the kingdom
- 28:34of heaven. Everything we have said in
- 28:37this sermon is also valid for the
- 28:38faithful in relation to the priests.
- 28:40Those are our children, aren't they? So
- 28:43, to all the fathers of the apostolate,
- 28:44we wish you once again a happy Father's
- 28:46Day with all of God's graces and
- 28:48blessings, and may God grant much
- 28:49happiness to you all in this life and
- 28:51the life to come. Seek first the
- 28:53kingdom of God and you will never lack
- 28:55anything, neither in body nor in soul,
- 28:57for your family. Always trust in
- 28:59providence. In the name of the Father,
- 29:01and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
- 29:03Amen. Yes.
