- 0:16in stoneberg Texas on July 11th 1983 a
- 0:19Drifter named Henry Lee Lucas was
- 0:21arrested for the illegal possession of a
- 0:23firearm as a convicted felon he wasn't
- 0:26allowed to have one Lucas was 46 at the
- 0:30the time and a suspect in the case of
- 0:32two missing women but thus far the leads
- 0:34were tenuous investigators were relieved
- 0:37to be able to lock him up for even a
- 0:39minor infraction because they figured
- 0:41that once he was in custody they could
- 0:43get him to talk about the women he'd
- 0:44known Kate Rich 82 and Becky Powell just
- 0:48a girl at 15 had been Lucas's
- 0:51companion Witnesses had seen him with
- 0:53Kate on the day she disappeared The
- 0:56oneeyed Drifter just looked like bad
- 0:58news waiting to happen at the very least
- 1:01he should be able to tell them why Becky
- 1:03was no longer with them Lucas was not
- 1:06happy about being locked up especially
- 1:08because it kept him from coffee and
- 1:10cigarettes he said that he'd been on the
- 1:12verge of helping to find Kate but now
- 1:14they could do without his
- 1:16assistance he was placed in a small cell
- 1:19in the monague county jail Lucas claimed
- 1:22later probably lying that the police had
- 1:24treated him badly stripping him denying
- 1:26him cigarettes holding him in a
- 1:28substandard cell and prohibiting his
- 1:30contact with an attorney he'd endured it
- 1:33for a period of 4 days and then decided
- 1:35to get their
- 1:37attention while talking with one of the
- 1:39jailers Joe Dawn Lucas admitted that
- 1:41he'd done some bad things as if to
- 1:44mitigate it he said that he tried and
- 1:46failed to get help I've killed for the
- 1:49past 10 years he confessed and no one
- 1:51will believe
- 1:52me clearly he was ready to talk so
- 1:55investigators were positive that they'd
- 1:57soon have the information they needed to
- 1:59wrap up these two cases indeed they did
- 2:03and then some Lucas's story is told in
- 2:07two full length books the confessions of
- 2:09Henry Lee Lucas by Mike Cox and hands of
- 2:12death by Max call although call
- 2:15apparently believed everything that
- 2:16Lucas said which in light of the details
- 2:19following makes his book less than
- 2:21credible Lucas has also been featured in
- 2:23several television documentaries such as
- 2:25A&E's myth of a serial killer and the
- 2:281986 movie Henry portrait of a serial
- 2:31killer which was recently released in a
- 2:3320th anniversary edition the road a 1988
- 2:37play by David Earl Jones was also based
- 2:39on stories Lucas
- 2:41told after admitting that he killed
- 2:43Lucas was charged with the murders of
- 2:45Kate rich and Freda Becky Powell he gave
- 2:48the authorities plenty of evidence
- 2:50including the decomposed pieces of Becky
- 2:53and at his June 21st arraignment in the
- 2:55monague County courtroom Lucas stated
- 2:57that he'd stabbed Kate Rich to death
- 3:00but then he went on waving his right to
- 3:02an attorney to say that he'd had sex
- 3:04with the body cut it into pieces and
- 3:07burned it in a wood stove behind his
- 3:09cabin I killed Kate Rich he told a
- 3:12courtroom full of curious cops and
- 3:14reporters and at least 100
- 3:17more the reaction was a stunned
- 3:21silence 100 either this guy was an out
- 3:24andout liar or he was about to
- 3:27officially become the most proficient
- 3:28serial killer in American
- 3:31history the judge asked Lucas if he'd
- 3:33ever been diagnosed by psychiatrist and
- 3:35he said he hadn't he was lying since
- 3:38he'd had several assessments during
- 3:40Stinson prison yet he added I know it
- 3:43ain't normal for a person to go out and
- 3:45kill girls just have sex with them in
- 3:48response to the judge's next question
- 3:50Lucas believed he was competent to stand
- 3:52trial so he was granted a public
- 3:54defender Don Maxfield to represent him
- 3:57when the judge entered a plea of not
- 3:59guilty for Lucas The Drifter asked will
- 4:01I still be able to go on helping find
- 4:03bodies he was urged to discuss it with
- 4:06his
- 4:07attorney by June 22nd thanks to a front
- 4:10page story Henry Lee Lucas had become a
- 4:13nationally famous serial
- 4:15killer the Texas Department of Public
- 4:17Safety had plenty of unsolved murder
- 4:19cases on the books and it appeared that
- 4:21Lucas was good for some of them the
- 4:24officers began the process by contacting
- 4:26other jurisdictions around the state to
- 4:28facilitate interviews between Lucas and
- 4:30relevant law enforcement officials word
- 4:33spread as well to officers in other
- 4:35states with open murder cases since
- 4:37Lucas had drifted around the country for
- 4:39several years his descriptions just
- 4:42might fit their Jane do so they were
- 4:44granted interviews in fact when an
- 4:47officer mentioned to the prisoner where
- 4:48he was from Lucas would often say oh
- 4:51yeah I got me some there in your
- 4:54area not everyone believed him and those
- 4:57with doubt sought corroborating evidence
- 4:59but it often seemed that Lucas with his
- 5:02prodigious memory offered details about
- 5:04a murder that had not been printed in
- 5:06the Press so his description seemed
- 5:08credible he also told them that he knew
- 5:11how not to leave evidence and in many
- 5:13cases his confession was the only thing
- 5:16that tied him to a body that made the
- 5:18requirement for corroboration
- 5:21difficult those officers who coordinated
- 5:23the interviews urged all incoming
- 5:25detectives to follow a careful protocol
- 5:28But ultimately it it was the job of each
- 5:30jurisdiction to decide if they accepted
- 5:32Lucas as the killer they sought for the
- 5:35court three psychiatrists were appointed
- 5:37to examine Lucas and although a gag
- 5:39order was imposed reporters flocked to
- 5:42Texas to try to get whatever they could
- 5:44if only a quote from a grocery clerk who
- 5:46had served the homely Outlaw some coffee
- 5:49his notoriety blossomed and several
- 5:51television news shows requested tapes of
- 5:54interviews Lucas signed statements about
- 5:56specific murders and offered drawings of
- 5:58more than S 70 bodies to officers who
- 6:01came or requested information and he
- 6:03soon had seven cases cleared including
- 6:06one that would become famously linked to
- 6:08him he described a woman he killed in
- 6:101979 and dumped several years earlier in
- 6:13a culvert off Interstate 35 north of
- 6:16Georgetown Texas when found she wore
- 6:19only a pair of orange socks so the
- 6:21officers had dubbed her orange socks
- 6:24Lucas not only described her and
- 6:26confessed to killing her in several
- 6:27statements but also took officers
- 6:30straight to where he dumped her over
- 6:33several months he offered more summaries
- 6:35for murders for which he had not yet
- 6:36been questioned including a husband and
- 6:39wife in one Texas County who'd owned a
- 6:41liquor store sometimes he murdered to
- 6:43Rob and then eliminate Witnesses other
- 6:46times he just enjoyed the transient
- 6:48feeling of power it gave him usually
- 6:51he'd quickly killed the girls or women
- 6:52he'd picked up because he preferred
- 6:54sexual contact with a corpse although
- 6:56Steven Edgar who interviewed him
- 6:58indicates in serial murder an elusive
- 7:00phenomenon that he was impotent to me he
- 7:03said in an interview aive woman ain't
- 7:07nothing Lucas generally used a knife or
- 7:09strangled them but he was an advocate
- 7:12for trying different methods so as to
- 7:14not leave a pattern that police might
- 7:16link together he appeared to be quite
- 7:18buoyant about his arrest according to
- 7:20American Justice and to accept with
- 7:22complacency that he could get the death
- 7:24penalty it seemed that being in prison
- 7:27suited him just fine espe especially
- 7:29because he was treated well and probably
- 7:31had better food and shelter than he was
- 7:33used to he did all he could to cooperate
- 7:36and the officers generally found him
- 7:38congenial nevertheless he would prove to
- 7:41be a
- 7:42trickster Lucas was arraigned for the
- 7:44orange socks murder on August 2nd 1983
- 7:48but in a surprised turnaround on August
- 7:5012th claimed that he was not guilty of
- 7:52Becky Powell's murder despite his
- 7:54initial statements at the end of
- 7:56September he waved his right to a trial
- 7:58for the murder of Kate rich and pled
- 8:00guilty receiving a sentence of 75
- 8:03years the following month his attorney
- 8:06asked the judge to consider throwing out
- 8:07Lucas's written and videotaped
- 8:09statements about his murder of Becky
- 8:11Powell on the tape Lucas was shown
- 8:13calmly describing how he killed and
- 8:15dismembered her and had sexual contact
- 8:17with the corpse so the judge decided the
- 8:19material would be admissible in addition
- 8:22the option of pleading Not Guilty by
- 8:24reason of insanity was denied that left
- 8:27Lucas's Defender with few options but it
- 8:29was Lucas himself who proved to be his
- 8:31own defender's greatest
- 8:34hurdle Lucas not only went to trial that
- 8:37November but also testified on his own
- 8:39behalf and seemed to hope to be
- 8:41convicted his attorney was Tom Whitlock
- 8:44who argued that Lucas had not intended
- 8:46to kill Becky on the stand a tearful
- 8:49Lucas admitted to Becky's murder but
- 8:51said he didn't know quite how it
- 8:53happened and he was full of remorse over
- 8:55it then after he was convicted and
- 8:58received a life sentence he
- 8:59congratulated the prosecutor with you
- 9:02did a good job Lucas then issued a
- 9:04statement to the effect that he'd not
- 9:06tried to win because he didn't want to
- 9:09previously he bragged to police that he
- 9:11was smart and could get out of anything
- 9:13if he wanted to his next trial would be
- 9:16for orange socks but this time it would
- 9:19be a capital crime where the death
- 9:21penalty was a possibility before that
- 9:23occurred Lucas got back in touch with an
- 9:25old friend and traveling partner Odus
- 9:27tulle if not for Otis he'd never have
- 9:30met
- 9:31Becky in 1976 after years in prison for
- 9:35various crimes Lucas had teamed up in
- 9:37Florida with arsonist and serial killer
- 9:39Otis Elwood TL 29 who enjoyed mutilating
- 9:43corpses they met says David Frasier in
- 9:46murder cases of the 20th century in a
- 9:48skid row Rescue Mission in
- 9:50Jacksonville although he's often been
- 9:52cast in Lucas's Shadow tuel had his own
- 9:55gruesome story and in the end it made be
- 9:59that he was in fact the more degenerate
- 10:01of the two of them he was a great school
- 10:04dropout with an IQ just above mentally
- 10:06and supposedly he'd been
- 10:09introduced to sex before the age of 10
- 10:11by his older sister and a gay
- 10:13neighbor tulle was born on March 5th
- 10:161947 in Jacksonville Florida abandoned
- 10:19by his alcoholic father he grew up in
- 10:21the custody of his mother whom he claims
- 10:23dressed him as a girl and his sister his
- 10:26mother supposedly was a religious
- 10:28fanatic while T's grandmother had been a
- 10:30Satanist writes Michael Newton in the
- 10:32encyclopedia of serial killers and had
- 10:34dubbed him the devil's child he'd watch
- 10:37her dig up Graves in search of body
- 10:39parts to use in her
- 10:41rituals already a Serial arsonist
- 10:44getting erotic enjoyment out of the
- 10:45fires he set and frequent runaway he
- 10:48committed his first murder at age 14 a
- 10:52traveling salesman had picked him up for
- 10:53sex and once they were in the woods tul
- 10:56ran the man over with his own car and
- 10:59and yet he dressed in drag to hunt for
- 11:01dates at the rescue
- 11:02mission TL was suspected in four other
- 11:05murders across the country before he met
- 11:07Lucas in Florida these involved
- 11:09shootings in Nebraska and Colorado and
- 11:11two stabbings in Colorado tulle had been
- 11:14married briefly but his wife managed to
- 11:16spend only 3 days with him before she
- 11:18departed in retrospect it's no
- 11:21wonder when tul met Lucas at the soup
- 11:24kitchen they went home together to have
- 11:26sex and soon became regular lovers
- 11:29apparently they recognized the kindred
- 11:31soul in each other so they traveled the
- 11:33country from 1978 until
- 11:361982 Lucas gave an interview in which he
- 11:38said that he had to re-educate tulle in
- 11:40the art of murder which became the basis
- 11:43for Henry portrait of a serial killer
- 11:45having studied prison records of how men
- 11:47were caught he wanted to be certain that
- 11:49tulle could follow directions and avoid
- 11:52detection he was doing his crimes all
- 11:54one way Lucas said I started to correct
- 11:57him in his ways in doing the crime where
- 12:00he wouldn't leave
- 12:02information they traveled together from
- 12:04one state to another reportedly 26
- 12:06States in DC and their favorite prey
- 12:08were female hitchhikers for Lucas or
- 12:10males for tulle but they also
- 12:13slaughtered people they robbed Lucas
- 12:15indicated that he had no feelings for
- 12:17any of the people they picked up he'd
- 12:19have a good time with them and then kill
- 12:21them and dump them out along the side of
- 12:23the road one time he'd even ridden
- 12:25across two states with the head of a
- 12:27victim in his back seat before before he
- 12:29realized he'd kept it during that time
- 12:32tul is mentioned in some accounts as
- 12:34having introduced Lucas to the Hand of
- 12:36Death cult telling them how they killed
- 12:38children for sacrifice to Satan Max call
- 12:42describes what they did in service to
- 12:43this cult supposedly learning to use
- 12:46rape as a tool of punishment and murder
- 12:48as part of the cult's overall plan they
- 12:51trained people like Otis and Henry to
- 12:53become killing machines however there
- 12:56was no corroboration for this story so
- 12:58law enforcement dismissed it as the
- 12:59imagination of a loser trying to seem
- 13:02more special than he
- 13:03was in 1977 tul married a woman 24 years
- 13:07his senior and insisted that she share
- 13:09him with Lucas according to interview
- 13:12she later gave he told her he couldn't
- 13:14perform with a woman unless he also knew
- 13:17he could get a man so the following year
- 13:19they
- 13:20separated Lucas's story is equally
- 13:22sorted and it Bears some odd
- 13:25similarities Lucas was born on August
- 13:2823rd 1936 In the Backwoods of Virginia
- 13:31to a man who' lost both legs in a train
- 13:33accident some sources say this was his
- 13:35stepfather and a woman named Viola a
- 13:38half Chipawa who made a living for her
- 13:40small family with prostitution and
- 13:42bootlegging reportedly she was mean when
- 13:45she drank Lucas said that she'd
- 13:47entertain clients in front of him his
- 13:49brother and his father some sources
- 13:51indicate he had eight siblings he even
- 13:54claims difficult as it is to believe
- 13:57that when he walked out one time into
- 13:58discussed his mother found him and beat
- 14:00him for not watching her with the client
- 14:03he also said that she used to dress him
- 14:05up as a little girl which humiliated him
- 14:07Edgar says that a half-sister claimed to
- 14:09have a picture of Henry with curls and
- 14:11wearing a
- 14:12dress psychologists who later evaluated
- 14:15Lucas indicated that his hatred of his
- 14:17mother was the source of his violent
- 14:19misogyny Lucas's father reportedly
- 14:21dragged himself outside into the snow
- 14:23one day and contracted a fatal case of
- 14:26pneumonia once when he was
- 14:29his mother struck him in the head with a
- 14:30wooden board he claimed that she knocked
- 14:33him out for a period of 3 days some
- 14:35sources say one day others indicate 11
- 14:38hours and therefore he suffered from
- 14:40headaches dizzy spells and blackouts he
- 14:43also took a knife wound to his left eye
- 14:45which left him with a vulnerable area on
- 14:47his face that would soon hurt in an
- 14:49accident at school his damaged eye was
- 14:51replaced with a glass eye that left him
- 14:53with a drooping eyelid according to
- 14:56Edgar children who knew him found him
- 14:58sullen and
- 14:59antisocial another story Lucas told is
- 15:02that one of his mother's lovers got him
- 15:04interested in beastiality with the slain
- 15:06carcasses of dogs and
- 15:08sheep he first killed someone he said
- 15:10just before he turned 15 in
- 15:131951 the reason he murdered this teenage
- 15:16girl was to see what it was like to have
- 15:18sex with a human or so The Story
- 15:21Goes Lucas certainly enjoyed the
- 15:23reactions his tales received and
- 15:25interviewers duly wrote them down in
- 15:281952 Lucas got in trouble with the law
- 15:32on June 12th 1952 he burglarized an
- 15:34appliance store and was sent to a
- 15:36Reformatory for 2 years upon release he
- 15:39committed a felony and got four years at
- 15:41the Virginia State Penitentiary he
- 15:44escaped stole a car and made his way to
- 15:46Michigan where he was arrested and
- 15:48returned to prison when he was finally
- 15:50done with the sentence he went to live
- 15:51with his half sister into Comey Michigan
- 15:54then his mother came for a visit she was
- 15:5674 at the time
- 15:59on January 11th 1960 after drinking too
- 16:02much Lucas and his mother got into an
- 16:04argument supposedly over a woman Lucas
- 16:06wanted to marry he grabbed a knife and
- 16:09plunged it into her neck he remembered
- 16:11only that he knocked her a little and
- 16:13she had a heart attack Lucas was
- 16:15convicted of second deegree murder and
- 16:17sent to a state prison in Southern
- 16:19Michigan there he tried to commit
- 16:21suicide and was transferred to a
- 16:22forensic psychiatric
- 16:24hospital for his mother's murder he
- 16:26served 10 years of a 20e sentence but
- 16:29then as soon as he was released he got 3
- 16:31and A2 years for trying to kidnap two
- 16:34girls once he was out he moved to
- 16:36Pennsylvania and got married in 1975 but
- 16:39abandoned his wife when she accused him
- 16:41of molesting her daughters that's when
- 16:44the oneeyed killer started to
- 16:46travel in Florida he took up with TL and
- 16:49they went cross country together for a
- 16:52while T's orphaned nephew and niece
- 16:54Frank and Becky Powell came with them
- 16:56Lucas had started having sex with Becky
- 16:58when she was only 12 while they'd been
- 17:00rolling around on a bed tickling each
- 17:02other she seemed willing to do anything
- 17:05to be with them and he later said he
- 17:07grew to love her he liked that she
- 17:09seemed to accept everything he
- 17:11said when T's mother died in 1981 he
- 17:14started drinking and taking drugs around
- 17:17this time on July 27th 6-year-old Adam
- 17:20Walsh disappeared from a shopping mall
- 17:22on August 10th his head was found in a
- 17:24canal ditch in Vero Beach Tua later
- 17:27claimed to be his killer and this murder
- 17:29precipitated the show America's Most
- 17:31Wanted hosted by Adam's Father John
- 17:34Walsh the assistant police chief
- 17:36believed him but then later cleared him
- 17:38as a suspect and he did recant this
- 17:41crime Lucas took Becky with him in 1982
- 17:44because he wanted her to himself and
- 17:46tulle was so angered by their betrayal
- 17:49that he allegedly killed nine people in
- 17:51six different states in the course of 13
- 17:53months he was caught in Florida burning
- 17:55a building and was imprisoned with a
- 17:5720-year sentence he admitted to having
- 17:59set some 40 fires but that did not bring
- 18:03back his former lover or his niece in
- 18:06fact tulle would never see Becky
- 18:09again in the meantime Lucas had wandered
- 18:12around Texas with his child bride
- 18:14finally settling with Kate Rich however
- 18:17relatives disliked them and kicked them
- 18:19out according to the American Justice
- 18:21documentary they found a new home near
- 18:23stoneberg in a Pentecostal commune a
- 18:25former chicken ranch known as the house
- 18:28of prayer the head of the group Ruben
- 18:30Moore was both a lay Minister and a
- 18:33contractor so he gave Lucas and Becky
- 18:36who claimed to be husband and wife a
- 18:38shack to live in Edgar says a trailer
- 18:41and hired Lucas for some odd
- 18:43jobs Max call indicates that Lucas left
- 18:46Florida when he did to avoid
- 18:47implications in the murder of a female
- 18:49school teacher and he also writes that
- 18:51the new digs in Texas had connections to
- 18:53the Hand of Death cult in which Lucas
- 18:55was supposedly a member call also Des
- 18:58described Kate Smith as a member
- 19:00suggesting that she paid Lucas for
- 19:01activities involving organized crime
- 19:04there's no reason to suppose any of that
- 19:06was
- 19:07true according to the story Lucas told
- 19:10Becky eventually tired of the living
- 19:12conditions and wanted to return home on
- 19:14August 24th 1982 the day after Lucas's
- 19:17birthday Becky argued with him saying
- 19:20she missed her family but Lucas was
- 19:22afraid that he'd lose her if they went
- 19:24back so he resisted he also knew he
- 19:27faced a warrant for stealing a truck but
- 19:29Becky would not give up she pouted and
- 19:32cried so he finally relented and told
- 19:35her to get ready to
- 19:36go because he had no license plates on
- 19:39his car he decided they should hitchhike
- 19:41and they got a ride as far as Denton
- 19:43Texas north of Dallas Lucas then got a
- 19:46six-pack of beer and tried again to
- 19:48persuade Becky to give up the idea she
- 19:51argued back which reminded Lucas of his
- 19:53mother and then Becky slapped him he'd
- 19:57reacted by killing her with a meat
- 19:58carving knife shoving it straight into
- 20:00her chest he was angry he later said
- 20:04that she just would not take
- 20:05responsibility for herself to his horror
- 20:09she died quickly she was gone before I
- 20:11knew it then right next to the
- 20:14interstate on a blanket that Becky had
- 20:16spread for them to sleep he raped the
- 20:18corpse he thought it was the best sex
- 20:21he'd ever had with her he then removed
- 20:24her head dismembered her removing her
- 20:26hands with special care and cut the
- 20:28trunk of her body into two large pieces
- 20:31the person who once had been Becky now
- 20:33lay there in nine pieces these he placed
- 20:36into a pillowcase but then he removed
- 20:38them and just scattered them around a
- 20:40nearby field he also dumped Becky's
- 20:42purse in a small suitcase no one knew
- 20:45them around these parts he figured so no
- 20:47one could trace it later he expressed
- 20:49regret because he claimed that he truly
- 20:51loved
- 20:53Becky once he cleaned off her blood he
- 20:55hitched her ride back to the house of
- 20:57prayer and told more than the others
- 20:58that Becky had gotten into a truck and
- 21:00left him then a couple of weeks later he
- 21:03returned to the area to bury some of the
- 21:04remains in a shallow hole near a cops of
- 21:07trees within another week he was
- 21:09contemplating another murder it was
- 21:13about 3 weeks after Becky's demise on
- 21:15September 16th the things went sour with
- 21:17Kate Rich Lucas went into Ringold where
- 21:20she lived knocked on her door and asked
- 21:23if she wanted to help him look for Becky
- 21:25or so he told the Rangers she to go
- 21:28happy to get out of the house and Lucas
- 21:30stopped first for beer on the car seat
- 21:33between them was a butcher's
- 21:35knife Lucas clearly had something else
- 21:38in mind since he knew that Becky was
- 21:40dead whether or not Kate questioned him
- 21:42about going north the wrong direction is
- 21:45anyone's
- 21:46guess Lucas had downed a lot of beer
- 21:49when he said he was seized with the idea
- 21:50of killing Kate he drove down a dirt
- 21:53road past a campground and then stopped
- 21:55the car he grabbed the knife and shov
- 21:58DED it into Kate's left side pushing her
- 22:00against the door he pulled the knife out
- 22:02and went around to the passenger side
- 22:05when he opened the door Kate fell onto
- 22:06the ground she was dead from a wound to
- 22:09her heart Lucas was immediately aroused
- 22:13so he pulled the corpse down an
- 22:14embankment and removed the clothing I
- 22:17got naked he told the Rangers and
- 22:19screwed her until I finished he then
- 22:21dragged her to a large drainage pipe
- 22:23near the road he shoved both the corpse
- 22:26and the clothing into it as far as he
- 22:27could until he felt certain no one would
- 22:30find her the next day Lucas left the
- 22:32house of prayer and took off getting as
- 22:35far as Needles California before the car
- 22:37gave out but Lucas wasn't finished with
- 22:40Kate he drifted for a month and then
- 22:42returned to where he'd hidden the body
- 22:45he learned that he was suspected in her
- 22:46disappearance and endured a polygraph
- 22:48examination but he got away with it no
- 22:52one arrested him Lucas retrieved the
- 22:54decomposing remains and put them into a
- 22:56stove at the house of prayer to to
- 22:58incinerate them after his confession
- 23:01investigators went to where Lucas had
- 23:02indicated he'd killed Kate and found the
- 23:04drainage pipe a broken pair of women's
- 23:07glasses and a pair of panties back at
- 23:10the house of prayer in the wood burning
- 23:11stove they found ashes and what looked
- 23:14like human bone and burnt flesh in
- 23:17another area where Lucas had dumped
- 23:18ashes they also found bone fragments
- 23:21Lucas also showed them where he'd thrown
- 23:23Kate's purse exactly the spot where it
- 23:26had been found months before
- 23:28officers including Texas Rangers then
- 23:31took Lucas to the Denton area to try to
- 23:33find Becky's remains he went right to
- 23:36the cops of trees where he buried her
- 23:37and pointed to several areas on the
- 23:39ground they dug at seven different
- 23:41locations and found clothing bones a
- 23:44skull and decomposing
- 23:46Remains the corroboration of two murders
- 23:49both of which appeared to show
- 23:50experience with killing and hiding
- 23:52evidence made the possibility that Lucas
- 23:54was telling the truth about others even
- 23:56a hundred others seemed more likely now
- 23:59to at least some of the
- 24:01officers Lucas wanted to clear his
- 24:03conscience entirely so after he was
- 24:06convicted of Becky's murder he wrote
- 24:07Otis TL a four-page letter to inform him
- 24:10of Becky's death and to get his
- 24:12assistance in recalling the details of
- 24:13the murders they' committed together he
- 24:16said that he hadn't yet mentioned TL
- 24:18although he had and would leave it up to
- 24:20him as to whether he wanted to be
- 24:22involved in fact the Jacksonville police
- 24:24had already been contacted about murders
- 24:26in their area committed are these two
- 24:29losers the letter went to tul in prison
- 24:32he'd heard about Lucas's confessions and
- 24:34he readily backed them up adding
- 24:36gruesome details of his own tul offer
- 24:39details that seemed to clear some two
- 24:41dozen murders in 11 states and he agreed
- 24:44that he'd participated with Lucas in
- 24:46over a 100
- 24:47killings in one disturbing phone call
- 24:50that they were allowed to make their
- 24:51first Contact in 2 years tulle urged
- 24:54Lucas to go ahead and spit it out if
- 24:56there was a crime that he'd had a hand
- 24:57hand in t also tried to go Lucas into
- 25:00admitting to cannibalism in a
- 25:03documentary made for American Justice he
- 25:05was quoted in a taped conversation as
- 25:07saying remember that one time I said I
- 25:10wanted to try some ribs did that make me
- 25:12a cannibal he indicated that they both
- 25:15had filleted some meat from the bodies
- 25:17and mentioned that he'd poured out some
- 25:19blood so he could see what the male
- 25:21victim tasted like Lucas responded I've
- 25:24seen bodies cut up worse than you've
- 25:26ever seen bodies cut up
- 25:28Odus ignored this one-upmanship and
- 25:30indicated that with barbecue sauce it
- 25:33tasted like real meat Lucas said that
- 25:35he'd abstained from that behavior
- 25:37because he didn't like the taste of
- 25:39barbecue sauce he did tell tulle that
- 25:41they had the devil in them that made
- 25:43them do these things that most people
- 25:45didn't you and I have become the same
- 25:47things that people look at as animals
- 25:50Lucas stated as quoted in Cox's
- 25:52book after about half an hour they said
- 25:55goodbye to each other apparently having
- 25:57thoroughly enjoyed the repulsive show
- 25:59they'd put on for law enforcement Bob
- 26:01Prince from the Lucas task force spotted
- 26:04the game and believed to decreased their
- 26:06credibility despite Lucas's claim to
- 26:09want to do the right thing he simply
- 26:11took too much delight in what he was
- 26:13doing later the partners were brought
- 26:16face to face when Lucas was taken to
- 26:18Jacksonville to talk with officers there
- 26:20but said nothing of substance T forgave
- 26:23Lucas for killing Becky shrugging it off
- 26:26as her time to die
- 26:28with new information supplied by Lucas
- 26:30tul received a death sentence when it
- 26:32was determined that one of the Fire Seed
- 26:34set had killed a man he received a
- 26:37second death sentence for the murder of
- 26:38an elderly woman but both were commuted
- 26:41to life after Thanksgiving in 1983 the
- 26:45Texas Rangers spearheaded the Henry Lee
- 26:47Lucas task force in a one-day event
- 26:50sponsored by the Texas Department of
- 26:51Public Safety on December 7th Texas
- 26:54Lawman questioned Lucas in the hopes of
- 26:56closing their open cases
- 26:58at the time Lucas had taken credit for
- 27:00around 126 murders and the Rangers
- 27:03believed that 35 were clearly associated
- 27:05with them however they were also aware
- 27:08that Lucas had lied about some and had
- 27:10said he was unclear about details of
- 27:12others because he'd been under the
- 27:14influence of alcohol or drugs while they
- 27:17collected information and contacted
- 27:19other agencies they filled in gaps about
- 27:21lucas' whereabouts as best they could
- 27:23during his murdering
- 27:25years then for 3 days in January 1984
- 27:28107 officers from 18 states and the
- 27:31District of Columbia filled the holodome
- 27:33in Monroe Louisiana for second
- 27:35conference about the homicides allegedly
- 27:37killed by Henry Lee Lucas the first one
- 27:40drawing not quite as many had been in
- 27:42October at that time it was announced
- 27:44that 72 cases had been cleared on Lucas
- 27:47and tlle and that they were suspects in
- 27:4971 more
- 27:51cases he was going to be allowed to book
- 27:53interviews by phone or in person until
- 27:55his murder trial in March for the orange
- 27:57s fo murder he had two courta appointed
- 27:59attorneys looking after his rights the
- 28:02Rangers urged officers not to give Lucas
- 28:05too many details or photographs because
- 28:07they wanted to be certain that cases
- 28:09that were cleared stayed
- 28:11clear Lucas did appear to close cases
- 28:14and accurately lead investigators to
- 28:16crime scenes he knew details about
- 28:18murders to which he confessed that had
- 28:20not been published in the press in a
- 28:22case in kenowick Washington he described
- 28:25the murder of a woman in impressive
- 28:26detail and his blood was matched to
- 28:28blood on a towel which he said he'd use
- 28:30to wipe his hand after cutting himself
- 28:32with a murder weapon I had no feelings
- 28:35for the people themselves or any of the
- 28:37crimes he stated I'd pick them up
- 28:39hitchhiking running and playing stuff
- 28:41like that we'd get to going and having a
- 28:44good time first thing you'd know i'
- 28:46killed her and threw her out
- 28:48somewhere finally he faced his most
- 28:51serious charge the trial for the murder
- 28:53of the victim known only as orange socks
- 28:56took place in March in San Angelo Texas
- 28:59district attorney Ed Walsh was the chief
- 29:01prosecutor while Don higginbottom and
- 29:04Parker mccullock defended Lucas the case
- 29:07was to be heard before Judge John Carter
- 29:09who'd recently presided over the trial
- 29:11of nurse Janine Jones for the murder of
- 29:13a
- 29:14child the trial began with reports of
- 29:16how the victim had been murdered
- 29:18including Lucas's edited confession in a
- 29:21written statement and on tape he
- 29:23described how he picked her up as a
- 29:25hitchhiker had sex with her killed her
- 29:27had sex again and dumped her in the
- 29:29Culvert skinning his knee on the guard
- 29:31rail a videotape showed Lucas directing
- 29:34police officers to where he dropped the
- 29:36victim's
- 29:37body however the defense attorneys
- 29:40proved that the unedited tape revealed
- 29:42that Lucas sometimes contradicted
- 29:44himself and suffered from Key lapses in
- 29:46memory the sheriff even had to refresh
- 29:48his memory at times during the interview
- 29:51which suggested that Lucas simply read
- 29:53the sheriff's desire for information and
- 29:55gave him what he wanted the defense also
- 29:58used work records to show that Lucas had
- 30:00been in Florida on October 31st and had
- 30:02cashed a check on November 1st and they
- 30:05tied it all up with psychiatric
- 30:06testimony to show that Lucas was insane
- 30:10psychologist Tom Kubin said that Lucas
- 30:12had an IQ of 84 a desire to feel
- 30:15important a feeling of inferiority and a
- 30:18belief that he could not direct his own
- 30:20actions he also had
- 30:23schizophrenia Lucas cried in court when
- 30:25he heard all of this forcing a reset
- 30:28the prosecution hit back with evidence
- 30:30that suggested that Lucas's boss might
- 30:32have recorded his presence at work when
- 30:34he was not there they also supplied
- 30:37psychiatric testimony that Lucas was not
- 30:39insane in addition on one of the tapes
- 30:42Lucas claimed 360 murders we killed them
- 30:46almost every way there is except poison
- 30:49detailing exactly what he
- 30:51meant despite the defense's best efforts
- 30:54not the least of which was a client who
- 30:56had proved most helpful to the other
- 30:58side the jury convicted Lucas and
- 31:00sentenced him to die afterward he seemed
- 31:03unfazed even happy it was as if he'd
- 31:07finally become someone of
- 31:09importance yet not everyone who'd been
- 31:12at the trial agreed with a verdict it
- 31:14seemed that Lucas only knew key facts
- 31:16about the crime after the sheriff had
- 31:18refreshed his memory it was the worst
- 31:21confession said Hugh answorth a reporter
- 31:23for the Dallas Times Herald who decided
- 31:26to do some more digging
- 31:28Lucas's casee occurred in the midst of
- 31:30an incident in Texas that provides some
- 31:32context for its eventual unraveling so
- 31:35let's look first at that one Roger
- 31:38Draper in a lengthy 1994 article about
- 31:41the one-time Frontier ethic of the Texas
- 31:43Rangers for Texas monthly discusses
- 31:46Lucas in the context of what he refers
- 31:48to as the infamous brandley case Draper
- 31:51states that this epitomized the
- 31:53wrongheadedness of the Ranger
- 31:55way on August 28th 1980 Ranger Wesley
- 31:59Styles investigated the assault and
- 32:01strangulation murder of a high school
- 32:03cheerleader he arrested the custodian
- 32:05Clarence brandley the next day without
- 32:08having questioned a single witness he
- 32:10was quickly charged with capital murder
- 32:13a jury later convicted him on nothing
- 32:15more than tenuous circumstantial
- 32:17evidence but Styles's tunnel vision
- 32:20approach was reviewed in 1989 by the
- 32:22Court of Criminal Appeals and the
- 32:24justices found that he had ignored
- 32:25evidence that pointed to other suspects
- 32:28he'd also threatened the state star
- 32:30witness and lied on the stand brandley
- 32:33on death row was
- 32:35freed before that conviction was
- 32:37overturned and the Rangers embarrassed
- 32:39by one of their own they were already
- 32:41going through a much more humiliating
- 32:43process at the hands of Lucas their Zeal
- 32:46was commendable but not their approach
- 32:49one Ranger in particular bought the
- 32:51whole
- 32:52package Max call was one of the Texas
- 32:55Rangers who took over the Lucas case
- 32:58although Call's book Hand of Death is
- 33:00generally discredited since he not only
- 33:03befriended Lucas but also accepted
- 33:05everything Lucas said at face value call
- 33:07even named Lucas as a member of the
- 33:09Lucas task force it may nevertheless be
- 33:11the best account available of what Lucas
- 33:14actually
- 33:15said Cole makes it clear that Lucas was
- 33:17getting plenty of attention a high
- 33:19security cell good food and numerous
- 33:22trips in the company of two Texas
- 33:24Rangers that's motivation for men with
- 33:27nothing to keep making up
- 33:29Whoppers Henry worshiped Satan call
- 33:32writes and believed his lies because he
- 33:35found justification for his fantasies in
- 33:37Satan's service call believed that Lucas
- 33:40had joined tulle in the so-called Hand
- 33:42of Death cult in the Florida everes and
- 33:44he thought that by writing the book he
- 33:46would be warning people about this
- 33:48dangerous organization he seemed to
- 33:51genuinely believe that Henry Lee Lucas
- 33:53assisted in 360 rapes and murders at the
- 33:56behest of the Hand of Death which
- 33:58supposedly had links to organized crime
- 34:00and practiced the sacrifice of females
- 34:03in fact Lucas indicated that they'd
- 34:05recruited and trained him specifically
- 34:07to become a killing machine and he was
- 34:09able to describe just how these supposed
- 34:11sacrifices
- 34:13worked Call's gullibility is obvious
- 34:16when he says that Lucas wanted to
- 34:17confess as a way of exposing the cult
- 34:20and it's likely that Lucas keed into
- 34:21Call's own religious beliefs to hook
- 34:24them and play him the book is replete
- 34:26with with religious ideology especially
- 34:29when it seems that Becky's found the way
- 34:31out through the Bible call seems to like
- 34:34this moral angle playing it up whenever
- 34:36he can in addition he accepts whatever
- 34:39Lucas tells him for example Lucas
- 34:42apparently described TL as a nicelooking
- 34:44young man when in fact TL is closer to
- 34:47winning the contest for homeliest serial
- 34:50killer unfortunately most of Call's
- 34:53chapter about Lucas's childhood
- 34:54experience with his mother was clearly
- 34:57corroborated and there's no way of
- 34:58knowing how much is factual Lucas was
- 35:01angry at his mother and he likely skewed
- 35:04the story to make her look as evil as
- 35:06possible other authors have picked up on
- 35:08this account including psychologists and
- 35:11criminologists so it's important to
- 35:13reiterate that there's little in Lucas's
- 35:15account of his childhood that bears the
- 35:16stamp of corroborated
- 35:18fact anything the call writes about must
- 35:21be viewed with some skepticism
- 35:23especially since he recreates it as a
- 35:25story with d and incidents he never
- 35:29witnessed as Lucas's death toll climbed
- 35:31to some 600 victims in 27 different
- 35:34states and in Canada According to some
- 35:37accounts though others capit at 360 it
- 35:40began to seem as if he was just a
- 35:42compulsive Confessor he'd added in the
- 35:44satanic cult activity which at the time
- 35:47seemed to justify his numbers but it
- 35:49only made some people suspicious that it
- 35:52was all a
- 35:53hoax Cox describes how reporter Hugh
- 35:56answorth co-writer was Steven mishod on
- 35:58a book about Ted Bundy sat through
- 36:00Lucas's trial and had his doubts he did
- 36:03some sleuthing and found that Lucas had
- 36:05been out of state or in prison at times
- 36:08when some of the murders to which he'd
- 36:09confessed had occurred that inspired
- 36:11mclennen County DA Vic Fel to look into
- 36:15Lucas's confessions to two murders in
- 36:17his own area apparently Lucas had
- 36:19written a letter to a reporter in Fort
- 36:21Worth suggesting that he was not
- 36:23actually responsible for all the murders
- 36:25he' claimed and and that the parents of
- 36:27one of Lucas's supposed victims decided
- 36:30after reviewing a statement that he was
- 36:32not the killer of their
- 36:34daughter answorth had interviewed Lucas
- 36:36himself and wrote a lengthy piece that
- 36:38was published on April 14th
- 36:401984 he asked the important question was
- 36:44it all a hoax he believed it was and
- 36:47accused the task force of failing to
- 36:49follow leads that may have undermined
- 36:51lucas' credibility such as noting the
- 36:53distance between crime scenes that made
- 36:55it virtually imposs possible for Lucas
- 36:57to have committed some murders that were
- 36:59close together in time he thought the
- 37:01information about many of the murders
- 37:03had been fed to Lucas in order to close
- 37:05the
- 37:06cases supposedly Lucas had finally
- 37:09admitted that he was good for only three
- 37:11murders in his life his mother Becky and
- 37:15Kate but Lucas told a l sister who then
- 37:18told other reporters that he'd lied to
- 37:20answorth and was in fact the Monstrous
- 37:23killer he claimed his Newfound religion
- 37:26for fored them to tell the truth but
- 37:28Lucas told a lay sister who then told
- 37:30other
- 37:31reporters officers involved insisted
- 37:34that they did not believe everything
- 37:35Lucas said but when he knew key
- 37:38unpublished details and could lead them
- 37:40directly to a crime scene that was
- 37:42convincing evidence he certainly had
- 37:45killed far more than three in fact by
- 37:48that point writes Cox 189 murders had
- 37:51been cleared and attributed to him on
- 37:54April 23rd he said that the only person
- 37:56he'd ever killed was his mother and that
- 37:59had been an accident he'd been able to
- 38:01clear so many murders because the
- 38:03Rangers had given him everything he
- 38:04needed to do so pictures reports and
- 38:07even leading them to the crime scenes he
- 38:10got a live appearance on Good Morning
- 38:11America to repeat his
- 38:13allegations his decision to recant he
- 38:16said was based on his belief in God the
- 38:18same reason he'd earlier given to
- 38:20confess to so many
- 38:22murders this news was just as stunning
- 38:25as his initial confession and the
- 38:27officers involved quickly mobilized to
- 38:29try to piece together some dignity
- 38:31apparently Lucas enjoyed shocking law
- 38:34enforcement with numbers perverse
- 38:35activities and gruesome details
- 38:38nevertheless he did point to places
- 38:40where victims were found and now it's
- 38:42estimated by some that he was
- 38:44responsible for some 40 to 50 murders on
- 38:47the other hand those who make this
- 38:49estimation may also be saving face not
- 38:51willing to admit that they may have fed
- 38:53him
- 38:55information Ryan reports the manner in
- 38:57which Lucas typically confessed to a
- 38:59number of unsolved murders if a police
- 39:01agency suspected Lucas and if Lucas
- 39:04admitted involvement and his total of
- 39:06some 3,000 confessions suggest he rarely
- 39:08denied complicity they would send the
- 39:10Lucas task force a case File with
- 39:12information pertaining to the unsolved
- 39:14crime Lucas would be questioned at
- 39:16length and sometimes even allowed to
- 39:19read police reports thus learning any
- 39:21number of details previously known only
- 39:23to police which he could then
- 39:25regurgitate at
- 39:27will the Rangers insisted that Lucas was
- 39:30a serial killer and they were reportedly
- 39:32annoyed with fil for interfering they
- 39:35claimed that they'd taken much more care
- 39:37in keeping details from Lucas than they
- 39:39were being accused of yet Draper says
- 39:42that one Ranger told the da I'm going to
- 39:44make you regret this if it's the last
- 39:46thing I
- 39:47do but the damage had been done the
- 39:51media had picked up on this hoax which
- 39:53was nearly too good to be true and Lucas
- 39:56status changed from one of the world's
- 39:58most notorious Killers to one of the
- 40:00world's most notorious Liars no matter
- 40:04what he said now no one would believe
- 40:06it this made all those in law
- 40:09enforcement who had rushed to interview
- 40:10him and who had closed cases look rather
- 40:13lame several retired Rangers later said
- 40:16that it was their impression during the
- 40:18interrogations that Lucas was a liar
- 40:21still it was difficult for them to
- 40:23accept that in cases where Lucas LED
- 40:24them to the right spot where B Lane he
- 40:27had nothing to do with it he simply Knew
- 40:29Too Much about certain crimes on his own
- 40:32without
- 40:33assistance then on April 29th Lucas
- 40:36returned to some of his original
- 40:38statements he gave an interview to a
- 40:40radio show personality indicating that I
- 40:43have killed the people I said I killed
- 40:46he again put the figure at
- 40:48360 then he said that everything was a
- 40:50lie and indicated that the hands of
- 40:52death cult was going to assassinate him
- 40:55no one knew quite what to make of a
- 40:57killer confessing to so many crimes he
- 40:59did not do but then he insisted that
- 41:01he'd been forced to recant his
- 41:04persistent waffling further reduced his
- 41:07credibility police are familiar with
- 41:09several types of false confessions
- 41:11including from people who confess
- 41:13spontaneously to something they did not
- 41:15do that's usually in response to a
- 41:17high-profile case in the hope of
- 41:19becoming
- 41:20famous sometimes it's about misplaced
- 41:23guilt where the Confessor believes he
- 41:25should be punished for something
- 41:27anything there are also coerced
- 41:29confessions usually offered when the
- 41:31person under interrogation is exhausted
- 41:33naive frightened or mentally impaired
- 41:36some people fear that the interrogation
- 41:38will be stressful so they capitulate
- 41:40quickly but on rare occasions a person
- 41:43may internalize the events and actually
- 41:45believe he or she did it that occurs
- 41:49when an interrogator seems confident of
- 41:51the suspect's guilt and may even lie or
- 41:53use manipulative tactics the
- 41:56characteristics of those most likely to
- 41:57falsely confess include youth a low IQ
- 42:01mental illness or confusion a high
- 42:03degree of suggestibility a trusting
- 42:05nature low self-esteem high anxiety and
- 42:07a poor memory but the person seeking to
- 42:10attach himself to a specific case seems
- 42:13closest to what Lucas did in Texas
- 42:16monthly Draper indicates that the
- 42:18Rangers had been overeager in their
- 42:20desire to close open cases so they
- 42:22provided Lucas with some of the details
- 42:24he needed to confess they called it
- 42:27helping to refresh his memory and he
- 42:29fully exploited it for his own ends he
- 42:32had nothing whatsoever to lose but
- 42:34plenty to gain by way of entertainment
- 42:37and feeling
- 42:38empowered in fact Lucas confessed to a
- 42:41murder in Little Rock Arkansas that had
- 42:43already been solved which made a DA
- 42:45there suspicious of his admissions the
- 42:48same thing happened with West Virginia
- 42:49officials when Lucas claimed credit for
- 42:51killing a police officer whose death was
- 42:53determined to have been a
- 42:55suicide in another Arkansas case Lucas
- 42:58could not offer details until after
- 43:00State Police had shown him a crime scene
- 43:02video that they'd made it was easy then
- 43:04for him to give them whatever they
- 43:06needed to tie him to that murder he also
- 43:09confessed to a killing in Delaware in
- 43:11which there was already a suspect in
- 43:12custody that suspect eventually
- 43:14confessed as
- 43:16well I set out to break and corrupt any
- 43:18law enforcement officer I could get
- 43:20Lucas said I think I did a pretty good
- 43:24job through dubious method says dra the
- 43:27Rangers extracted literally hundreds of
- 43:29confessions from Henry Lee Lucas perhaps
- 43:33Lucas was living by the principle that
- 43:34Edgar attributes to him if rules
- 43:37befitted him he went along if they
- 43:40didn't he broke them in other words he
- 43:43cleaved to whatever he thought was in
- 43:45his best interest at the
- 43:46moment on June 11th 1984 further
- 43:50investigations of open cases were halted
- 43:52while many of the cleared cases had
- 43:54already been reopened
- 43:56Lucas was transferred to the state
- 43:58prison at Huntsville claiming that his
- 44:00rights prior to the trial for orange
- 44:02socks had been violated somehow he
- 44:05believed that by undermining law
- 44:06enforcement as he' done he'd regain his
- 44:09freedom he told one officer he'd be free
- 44:12in a month in 1991 Odis TL received four
- 44:16more life sentences for the murders of
- 44:18three women and a man in Florida between
- 44:201980 and
- 44:211981 Lucas was charged along with them
- 44:24but not brought to Florida for
- 44:26prosecution 5 years later in 1996 tul
- 44:30died in prison from therosis of the
- 44:32liver before that happened a curious
- 44:35incident involved his former partner
- 44:38Lucas many serial killers attract
- 44:40groupies and while Lucas was not among
- 44:43the bestl looking men he was certainly
- 44:45notorious and had a share of admirers
- 44:48one woman Phyllis Wilcox even came up
- 44:50with a plot to free him by posing as his
- 44:53supposedly murdered former girlfriend
- 44:55Ryan McMichael includes an interview
- 44:57with her on his website given after she
- 44:59wrote to him in 2000 when he posted an
- 45:02online blog about
- 45:03Lucas according to this story in October
- 45:061992 Willcox posed as Becky all grown up
- 45:10although some 15 years older than Becky
- 45:12would have been at the time claiming
- 45:14that she was still alive so that she
- 45:16could get him out of that murder wrap
- 45:18she was actually a mother and
- 45:19grandmother aged 40 and living in Cape
- 45:21gyo Missouri she met Lucas via
- 45:24correspondence after reading a book
- 45:26about him and she soon
- 45:28visited she indicates that although she
- 45:30was nervous about going into prison and
- 45:32quite intimidated by the sight of Lucas
- 45:34and handcuffs surrounded by guards she
- 45:36had a wonderful time and made many more
- 45:38visits thereafter among the subjects
- 45:41they discussed was Becky
- 45:43Powell Lucas apparently claimed that
- 45:46he'd seen Becky get into a truck but he
- 45:48told authorities that he'd killed her so
- 45:50they wouldn't attempt to implicate her
- 45:51in the murders that he'd committed in
- 45:54other words she says he told Wilcox that
- 45:57Becky was still alive Lucas also denied
- 46:00killing Kate rich and orange socks
- 46:02indicating that the oven in which he
- 46:04supposedly had burned Kate was too small
- 46:06for a woman as fat as she was and would
- 46:08not have gotten hot enough to have
- 46:10burned her to Ash he was sure that the
- 46:12authorities found some chicken bones
- 46:14nothing more and exaggerated their
- 46:17significance about orange socks he
- 46:19claimed that the bruises around her neck
- 46:21did not even fit his hands but he did
- 46:24admit that he'd murdered his mother
- 46:27Wilcox bought it all and confessed to
- 46:29McMichael that despite being married she
- 46:31soon became obsessed with Lucas thinking
- 46:33and dreaming about him all the time she
- 46:36knew she was falling in love he accepted
- 46:39her feelings and told her he loved her
- 46:41too it wasn't long before Wilcox grew
- 46:44afraid that Lucas might be executed so
- 46:47she devised a plan to make sure that
- 46:49didn't happen she believed that he was
- 46:51innocent of the charges she'd even come
- 46:54up with a way to exonerate in her mind
- 46:56of killing his mother by blaming someone
- 46:58else so she posed as Becky and Lucas
- 47:01backed her up he said that he'd only
- 47:03confessed to murdering Becky because he
- 47:05wanted to embarrass the police he seems
- 47:08to have forgotten that they actually
- 47:10picked up Becky's remains as Lucas
- 47:12showed them where each piece was they
- 47:15didn't get away with it Fraser indicates
- 47:18that Wilcox was revealed when this hoax
- 47:20was unraveled as a diagnosed
- 47:22schizophrenic who had also corresponded
- 47:24with John Wayne gasy and Charles Manson
- 47:27but Lucas was still determined to beat
- 47:29his death
- 47:30sentence while it was clear that Lucas
- 47:33had committed four murders including his
- 47:35mother even one of those orange socks
- 47:38eventually came under doubt the only
- 47:41thing linking Lucas to Orange socks was
- 47:43essentially his confession in fact some
- 47:462133 cases had been cleared through
- 47:49Lucas's confessions which concerned the
- 47:51writers of the Lucas report a document
- 47:54commissioned by the Texas Attorney
- 47:55General's
- 47:56office ultimately Lucas was convicted of
- 47:59only 11 homicides says Edgar though some
- 48:02criminologists believe he was
- 48:04responsible for between 40 to 50 murders
- 48:07still no one knows for sure the death
- 48:10sentence for the murder of orange sock
- 48:11stood for many years although Lucas
- 48:14received two stays of execution because
- 48:16the evidence was too slim apparently it
- 48:19was now the case that the work records
- 48:20that had been discredited at the trial
- 48:22were now considered viable evidence on
- 48:25Lucas's half that's because a lot more
- 48:27research has been
- 48:29done former Attorney General's
- 48:31investigator Michael Fury had developed
- 48:33a thick file about Lucas's whereabouts
- 48:35on the night that orange socks had been
- 48:37murdered the documentation made it clear
- 48:40that he was indeed in Jacksonville
- 48:42Florida Fury had utilized records such
- 48:45as paycheck stubs and insurance reports
- 48:47to track Lucas as he drifted around the
- 48:49southeast he was ready to submit all of
- 48:52this on Lucas's behalf and it was
- 48:54entered into evidence when when Lucas
- 48:56received a hearing in 1996 about his
- 48:58death
- 48:59sentence Lucas took the witness stand
- 49:01writes Jean Pagel for the Associated
- 49:03Press to say that he did not kill the
- 49:06woman known as orange socks he cried and
- 49:09for about 15 minutes spoke in a
- 49:11trembling voice before US District Judge
- 49:14samr Cummings Lucas said that he'd given
- 49:17false information when he' confessed to
- 49:18the murder and added that he was able to
- 49:21give a lot of facts about the crime
- 49:23because he'd read the case File in fact
- 49:25fact he had an alibi he was in Florida
- 49:28putting out a
- 49:29carfire the assistant Texas Attorney
- 49:31General Gina Blount took him to task for
- 49:34playing games with investigators and
- 49:36Lucas denied that it had been a game I
- 49:39had my reasons he responded he received
- 49:41a stay and two years later the matter
- 49:44went to the
- 49:45governor in 1998 based on the lack of
- 49:48evidence connecting Lucas to the murder
- 49:50and the existence of contradictory
- 49:51evidence then Texas governor George W
- 49:54bush commuted Lucas is a sentence to
- 49:56life the only man to receive this during
- 49:58Bush's Reign 7 years later in 2005 in
- 50:02the New York Review of Books sister
- 50:04Helen preene author of dead man walking
- 50:07wrote about Bush's decision she
- 50:09suggested that he'd been motivated more
- 50:11by expediency than conscience and
- 50:14offered the relevant supporting
- 50:16facts during his six years as governor
- 50:18of Texas bush had presided over 152
- 50:22executions more than any other governor
- 50:24in any other state in recent history he
- 50:27commuted no other death sentences to
- 50:29life although there were factors as
- 50:31significant as any that Lucas's
- 50:33attorneys offered journalist Alan burlow
- 50:36apparently discovered that Bush's
- 50:38examination of at least 57 of these
- 50:40cases involved only cursory reviews of
- 50:43brief death penalty memos on the day
- 50:45before the scheduled execution in one
- 50:48case bush had skipped over evidence that
- 50:50the convicted man was mentally
- 50:52and therefore not even eligible for the
- 50:54death penalty
- 50:56preene calls the Texas Board of Pardons
- 50:58and appeals a farce that bush did
- 51:00nothing to
- 51:01reform then she writes about Lucas in
- 51:04the Henry Lee Lucas case in 1998 Bush
- 51:07showed where the real power lay he
- 51:10intervened with a board before they had
- 51:11a chance to make a recommendation and
- 51:14afterward the board approved his
- 51:15decision in a 17 to1
- 51:17vote preing points out that it was
- 51:20common knowledge by then that Lucas
- 51:22could not have murdered the woman known
- 51:23as orange socks additionally she writes
- 51:27it was clear that Lucas would never be a
- 51:29threat to society because he was already
- 51:31serving six life sentences for other
- 51:33murders which he may or may not have
- 51:35committed since on a fairly regular
- 51:37basis he confessed falsely to hundreds
- 51:39of
- 51:40murders Bush pointed out that jurors at
- 51:43his trial did not know certain facts
- 51:45that later came to light thus he took
- 51:47the opportunity she claims to exercise
- 51:49apparent compassion although in the
- 51:52context of his actual record his
- 51:54compassion diminished fines into mere
- 51:57politics no one knows exactly how many
- 52:00murders Henry Lee Lucas and Otis tul
- 52:03committed given Lucas's trickster
- 52:05methods and propensity to lie it's
- 52:08likely that no one will ever know beyond
- 52:10his mother Kate rich and Becky Powell
- 52:13there seems to be good evidence that he
- 52:15killed others but judges would not admit
- 52:18his confessions so it was difficult to
- 52:20bring the cases to
- 52:22trial in March 2001 Henry Lucas died in
- 52:26prison of natural causes thus ended one
- 52:29of the most unusual cases in the annals
- 52:33of criminal
