- 0:09hello everyone and welcome back to
- 0:11English with Lucy today we are going to
- 0:14talk about self inroduction the answer
- 0:18to that dreaded question tell me about
- 0:21yourself now to some of you this topic
- 0:24may seem very basic but learning to
- 0:27introduce yourself properly is
- 0:30incredibly important you might need to
- 0:33introduce yourself without any
- 0:35forewarning so you need to be prepared
- 0:38you may need to introduce yourself in
- 0:40your English class or in a job interview
- 0:44you might need to introduce yourself at
- 0:46a new job or at a new hobby or Leisure
- 0:49activity you may even need to introduce
- 0:52yourself at a big event or convention in
- 0:55front of thousands of people I feel very
- 0:58nervous and anxious when I have to
- 1:00introduce myself to large groups of
- 1:02people and English is my first language
- 1:05for Learners of English for my students
- 1:08this is incredibly intimidating in order
- 1:11to successfully introduce yourself you
- 1:14must have your self introduction
- 1:16pre-written and learned you have to be
- 1:20prepared in this video I am going to
- 1:23guide you through this process at the
- 1:25end of this lesson you will have a
- 1:28complete self-introduction that is ready
- 1:30to use and ready for you to learn off by
- 1:33heart I encourage you to share your
- 1:35introductions in the comment section
- 1:37down below so that the community and I
- 1:40may assist you and correct you so let's
- 1:42start with the basics of a self-
- 1:44inroduction the very first thing that
- 1:46you'll need to say when introducing
- 1:48yourself is a greeting now you can have
- 1:52formal Greetings or you can have
- 1:54informal greetings it depends where you
- 1:56are the situation you are in let's start
- 2:00with formal greetings obviously hello
- 2:04hello can be both formal and informal
- 2:06but it's fine to use it in a formal
- 2:08situation you also have good morning
- 2:11good afternoon and good evening make
- 2:14sure you pay particular attention to
- 2:16what time of day it is I have said good
- 2:18morning in the evening and good evening
- 2:20in the morning before one thing to note
- 2:22is the use of good day in British
- 2:25English good day is considered very
- 2:29oldfashioned
- 2:30very very very formal it's not commonly
- 2:33used however it is very common in
- 2:36Australian English they kind of shorten
- 2:39it down to good day good
- 2:42day and I would say that good day I
- 2:46wonder what Emma from English will
- 2:49think of me saying good day will she
- 2:52approve I'll ask her but good day is
- 2:55more informal but this again is if
- 2:57you're in Australia it's just something
- 3:00I've noticed people using in my comment
- 3:02section good day um I can see why you
- 3:06would use it it appears to be a greeting
- 3:08that is suitable for all hours of the
- 3:10day when in reality in British English
- 3:13it's just a very very old-fashioned
- 3:15saying also note that good night is
- 3:18normally a sendoff an equivalent for
- 3:20goodbye you say it when you are leaving
- 3:23instead of when you are greeting someone
- 3:25if you're introducing yourself in the
- 3:26nighttime you would say good evening now
- 3:30let's talk about informal greetings it's
- 3:33really important for you to find one
- 3:35that you feel comfortable with there are
- 3:37lots of informal greetings like hey
- 3:40what's up hi
- 3:43higher
- 3:44yo there's even what's good which is
- 3:48quite an American one honestly if I said
- 3:52yo when I was introducing myself in an
- 3:55English class or in a less formal
- 3:58situation I would feel really stupid
- 4:01because it doesn't suit me my particular
- 4:03region doesn't use yo so it feels a bit
- 4:06forced I really admire people who can
- 4:08just stand up and say yo what's good but
- 4:11it's not going to happen for me so make
- 4:13sure you pick one that you feel really
- 4:14comfortable saying next of course we
- 4:18have your name now there are many ways
- 4:21of introducing your name the very basic
- 4:23ones like I'm or I am I'm Lucy I am Lucy
- 4:29or or if you're introducing yourself in
- 4:31a situation where the majority of the
- 4:34audience cannot see you for example on
- 4:37the telephone no one can really see you
- 4:39when you're speaking on the telephone
- 4:41you can say my name is or my names with
- 4:44the apostrophe s the contracted form or
- 4:47if you're in a very large Auditorium or
- 4:50Convention Center then you might want to
- 4:53use this is this is Lucy on the
- 4:56telephone I would normally say hi this
- 4:58is Lucy speaker
- 5:00or this is Lucy next let's talk about
- 5:03location where you're from and where
- 5:05you're living there are many variations
- 5:07of this I'm going to start with the most
- 5:09basic and move on to slightly more
- 5:11complicated ways of describing your
- 5:14geographical location firstly we have
- 5:18I'm from and then the place name I'm
- 5:21from bedfordshire we also have I'm and
- 5:24then the nationality adjective I'm
- 5:26British I'm English if you are from
- 5:30somewhere that is quite far from the
- 5:32place where you're introducing yourself
- 5:35you can say I come from and then you can
- 5:38name that place come from implies a
- 5:41little bit more of a journey if you want
- 5:44to say where you grew up you can say I
- 5:47was born and raised in place name I was
- 5:51born and raised in England if you were
- 5:53born in one place but grew up in a
- 5:56different place you can say I was born
- 5:58in France but but raised in Sweden if
- 6:01you want to say that you are from one
- 6:03place but are now living in another
- 6:05place there are various options you can
- 6:08say I grew up in I grew up in LA but now
- 6:13live in New York I'm originally from
- 6:16Edinburgh but I'm now based in London if
- 6:19you want to say how long you have lived
- 6:21in a certain place you can say I've been
- 6:23living in London for 3 years or I've
- 6:27spent the past few years in Paris now
- 6:31those are the basics let's talk about
- 6:33some other options that you can add on
- 6:36to your self- introduction a very
- 6:38important option is your position and
- 6:40your company for example I work at
- 6:43Google in the marketing department you
- 6:46can say I work at or I work for you
- 6:50would not say I work in and then a
- 6:52company name it's at or for a company
- 6:56name you can also say I'm a manager at
- 7:01Starbucks I'm a position at company
- 7:06again the at can also be replaced with a
- 7:09four if you just want to give a general
- 7:12idea of the field in which you work you
- 7:14can say I work in general area I work in
- 7:19sales if you want to give the specific
- 7:22position you can say I work as a deputy
- 7:25manager I work as an accountant I work
- 7:29as an accountant accountant you might
- 7:31also want to mention your qualifications
- 7:33especially if you are introducing
- 7:35yourself in a job interview if you want
- 7:37to say that you are close to graduation
- 7:40you can say I'm about to graduate you
- 7:43could also say I am a subject graduate
- 7:46or
- 7:47postgraduate I'm a marketing graduate I
- 7:50have a Bachelor of Arts degree in
- 7:52marketing or I have a ba degree in
- 7:55marketing or just a ba in marketing I'm
- 7:58a biology post grad shortening it down
- 8:01to grad is more informal so it might be
- 8:03something that you do at a convention or
- 8:06in your English class if you want to
- 8:08talk about courses or other achievements
- 8:10you can say I'm currently taking a
- 8:12course in subject maths now note the
- 8:17preposition in versus on you can take a
- 8:20course in something theoretical like
- 8:24maths you can take a course on something
- 8:28practical like jewelry making or Pottery
- 8:32you can also remove the preposition I'm
- 8:35taking a pottery course if you want to
- 8:37say that you finished a course it's now
- 8:39on your CV you can say I have completed
- 8:42a 72-hour course in or on subject for
- 8:48the time scale of the course you can say
- 8:50the number Dash and then the unit of
- 8:53time and that together forms an
- 8:55adjective a
- 8:5772-hour subject course a 3-day subject
- 9:03course now if you want to talk about
- 9:06experience about your previous jobs you
- 9:09can say I have number years of
- 9:12experience in the field I have three
- 9:17years of experience in the Neuroscience
- 9:20field at whichever company you don't
- 9:23necessarily have to say field you can
- 9:25say I have 10 years of sales experience
- 9:28or I have 10 years of experience
- 9:29experience in sales you can also say
- 9:31I've worked in field for however long
- 9:35you've worked there I've worked in the
- 9:37accounting field for 3 years or I've
- 9:40worked in accounting for 3 years now if
- 9:43you're in a more informal situation one
- 9:45in which you're introducing yourself to
- 9:48make friends and to meet people and to
- 9:50get to know each other better you may
- 9:52want to talk about your family now
- 9:54obviously there are the normal things
- 9:56like I have a brother I have a sister I
- 9:59have a mom and a dad but what if you
- 10:01want to give a little bit more
- 10:02information and also show off your
- 10:04language skills one common mistake I
- 10:07hear my students make is when they're
- 10:09trying to talk about how large or how
- 10:11small their family is they want to tell
- 10:14me how many family members there are in
- 10:17their family I often hear them say we
- 10:20are five in our family this isn't
- 10:23correct in English in English we say I'm
- 10:27from a family of num number I'm from a
- 10:31family of four or we are a family of
- 10:34four that's a really important one for
- 10:36you to remember it's a mistake I hear
- 10:39very frequently if you want to talk
- 10:41about how many brothers or sisters you
- 10:43have you can say I am one of four
- 10:47siblings siblings doesn't specify the
- 10:50gender so you don't have to say two
- 10:51brothers one sister you can just say
- 10:54siblings three I'm one of four siblings
- 10:58or even even if you're already talking
- 11:00about families you can just say I'm one
- 11:02of four and they'll understand you if
- 11:05you have no brothers or sisters you can
- 11:07say I am an only child I'm an only child
- 11:11you might want to talk about Hobbies you
- 11:14have all the usual phrases like I really
- 11:17like running I really enjoy tennis a
- 11:21really good phrase I think is I'm a big
- 11:24fan of I'm a big fan of go-karting you
- 11:28can also say I am a keen and then a noun
- 11:31for example I'm a keen Runner or I'm a
- 11:35keen tennis player now I've left this
- 11:38one till last because really it really
- 11:40isn't as necessary anymore but it's
- 11:43important that you know how to say it
- 11:45it's age we have the basic one I am 25
- 11:50years old we can shorten it down I'm 25
- 11:54if you don't want to specify your age
- 11:56you can say I'm in my early mid or late
- 12:02and then your decade 20s 30s 40s 50s
- 12:07teens as well if you're really young I'm
- 12:10in my mid 20s she's in her early teens
- 12:15he's in his late 40s you might also hear
- 12:18people say she's a 20s something
- 12:22marketing graduate or he's a 30-some
- 12:26accountant that's if you don't know that
- 12:29age or you think it would be rude to try
- 12:31and guess their age now the last point
- 12:33in this vocabulary section of the lesson
- 12:36I want to talk to you about the dreaded
- 12:38fun fact I've been to a lot of events
- 12:42I've been to a lot of conventions and
- 12:44I've had to introduce myself in a lot of
- 12:46English
- 12:47classes and something that teachers and
- 12:51speakers love to ask you to do is give a
- 12:55fun fact about yourself I must admit I
- 12:58have asked my students to provide a fun
- 13:01fact about themselves it's annoying
- 13:04because you have to stand up and say my
- 13:05name is you know my job is and my fun
- 13:07fact is and that could be really really
- 13:10daunting
- 13:12intimidating to suddenly think of an
- 13:14interesting fact about yourself is
- 13:16really really hard so I highly recommend
- 13:19that you have a fun fact up your sleeve
- 13:23a fun fact prepared think about an
- 13:26interesting fear a weird like or dislike
- 13:29a good one is always your pet or a
- 13:32strange achievement or extraordinary
- 13:36experience I always say that I have
- 13:38hypermobility and then I'll just show
- 13:40them my thumbs or um dislocate my
- 13:43shoulder blade that is twice in a month
- 13:45I've done that on YouTube I need to calm
- 13:48down have a think if you want to do
- 13:50bonus homework share your fun fact about
- 13:53yourself but this is optional I know how
- 13:56horrible the fun fact can be now now
- 13:59I've given you loads of different
- 14:01options I've given you the basics and
- 14:03then you can add on the options but
- 14:06you'll be left with a lot of short
- 14:08sentences let's see how mine would look
- 14:11good morning everyone my name is Lucy I
- 14:15am 24 years old I am from bedfordshire I
- 14:18work as an English teacher I am a
- 14:21marketing graduate I'm a big fan of
- 14:24running and fitness classes now whilst
- 14:26all of that is grammatically correct
- 14:29very clear if I do say so
- 14:31myself I think it would be a lot better
- 14:34if I condensed these seven sentences
- 14:37down into two flowing sentences what do
- 14:41you think of this good morning everyone
- 14:44my name is Lucy and I'm a 25-year-old
- 14:46marketing graduate from bedfordshire I
- 14:48now work as an English teacher and I'm a
- 14:51big fan of running and fitness classes
- 14:54so much better so much shorter so much
- 14:56more natural see if you can condense
- 14:59your introduction down to two flowing
- 15:03sentences minus the greeting that could
- 15:05be a little sentence on its own I
- 15:07haven't removed any of the information
- 15:10right I really look forward to reading
- 15:12all of your introductions and your fun
- 15:16facts if you choose to do so feel free
- 15:19to correct each other and help each
- 15:21other I will also be looking at the
