  1. 0:00welcome back to cares.org today we're
  2. 0:02going to be continuing with our series
  3. 0:03dumbfounding definitions dizzying
  4. 0:05distinctions and diabolical doctrines a
  5. 0:08series sorting through the jargon of
  6. 0:10philosophy today we're going to be
  7. 0:11doubling up for a thre minute philosophy
  8. 0:15video in this video we're going to be
  9. 0:17looking at the difference between
  10. 0:19philosophy and philosophy of science
  11. 0:22what's the difference between these two
  12. 0:24disciplines they're often confused
  13. 0:25people often think that they're the same
  14. 0:27thing when in fact they're very distinct
  15. 0:29so science is a methodology that
  16. 0:32performs experiments and attempts to
  17. 0:34explain phenomena it attempts to provide
  18. 0:36us with the theory that best fits the
  19. 0:39evidence it then uses inductive methods
  20. 0:41to provide further justification or
  21. 0:43disproof for that theory through
  22. 0:45experiments that can control for certain
  23. 0:48variables that we predict are the causes
  24. 0:50of phenomena basically science uses
  25. 0:52something called the scientific method
  26. 0:55it takes that method and based on that
  27. 0:57gives us theories of best fit for the
  28. 1:00evidence we have and it attempts to then
  29. 1:02disprove those theories so that we can
  30. 1:04provide more and more justification for
  31. 1:06them philosophy of science on the other
  32. 1:09hand is a discipline of philosophy that
  33. 1:11deals with the justification for the
  34. 1:13scientific method itself science assumes
  35. 1:16the scientific method and builds up from
  36. 1:18that philosophy of science tries to
  37. 1:19build up to the scientific method it
  38. 1:22tries to give some reasons for us
  39. 1:24thinking that the scientific method
  40. 1:26Works philosophy of science also deals
  41. 1:28with the demarcation between what is and
  42. 1:30what is not science so if you're asking
  43. 1:32the question is this science it's not up
  44. 1:35to science to decide that's a job for
  45. 1:37philosophy of science science Works
  46. 1:39within the bounds of science to do
  47. 1:41science philosophy of science Works
  48. 1:43outside those bounds to determine what
  49. 1:45fits in those bounds and what does not
  50. 1:47an area of study that questions whether
  51. 1:50or not science is directed at truth is a
  52. 1:53way to describe philosophy of science it
  53. 1:56questions some of the assumptions of
  54. 1:58science so once again science assumes
  55. 2:00the scientific method is effective and
  56. 2:02bases its work on that assumption
  57. 2:04different fields of science rest on
  58. 2:05varying quantities of assumptions but
  59. 2:07they all rely on some generally that the
  60. 2:10scientific method is effective
  61. 2:12philosophy of science on the other hand
  62. 2:13is in the business of questioning those
  63. 2:15basic assumptions which give rise to
  64. 2:17problems like the problem of induction
  65. 2:19the problem of underdetermination and
  66. 2:20the problem of demarcation unless
  67. 2:22solutions to these problems are found
  68. 2:24even some of the best confirmed science
  69. 2:26is going to be invalid since its very
  70. 2:29method are in question even the best
  71. 2:33confirmed scientific discoveries all
  72. 2:35rely on the scientific method being true
  73. 2:38and scientists never question whether or
  74. 2:40not the scientific method is effective
  75. 2:42at providing truth that's a job for
  76. 2:45philosophers of science so when you're
  77. 2:48asking whether or not a scientific claim
  78. 2:49is true it's not the scientist you
  79. 2:52should ask but the philosopher of
  80. 2:54science science takes the assumptions of
  81. 2:56the scientific method and attempts to
  82. 2:57build up from them to new discoveries
  83. 2:59whereas philosophy of science takes the
  84. 3:00scientific method and attempts to build
  85. 3:02down to show that this method is in some
  86. 3:05way something that provides us with
  87. 3:06truth about the world or has Justified
  88. 3:10discoveries if you are curious about
  89. 3:12philosophy of science check out the
  90. 3:13videos I have here with kind of this
  91. 3:15green background where we cover
  92. 3:17different issues in philosophy of
  93. 3:18science watch this video and more here
  94. 3:20at cars.org and stay skeptical everybody
