Scans Discovered The Underground Labyrinth of Hawara — Transcript

- 0:00For more than 2,000 years, one of the
- 0:02most extraordinary buildings ever
- 0:04described in the ancient world has
- 0:06remained almost completely hidden
- 0:08beneath the sands of Egypt. At Hawara,
- 0:11near the entrance to the Fayum Oasis,
- 0:13>> [music]
- 0:13>> ancient writers described an enormous
- 0:15structure so complicated and impressive
- 0:18that even the pyramid seemed less
- 0:20astonishing by comparison.
- 0:22Something enormous may be buried beneath
- 0:24the Egyptian [music] desert, and after
- 0:26years of rumors, scans, and
- 0:28controversial claims, archaeologists
- 0:31have finally [music] begun digging
- 0:32toward it.
- 0:33Beneath the visible ruins of Hawara,
- 0:36>> [music]
- 0:36>> researchers have reported scans of
- 0:37massive walls, geometric chambers,
- 0:40possible underground levels, and an
- 0:42enormous central space hidden far below
- 0:44the surface.
- 0:46At the center of the most controversial
- 0:48interpretation is something even
- 0:50stranger.
- 0:51A free-standing anomaly approximately 40
- 0:53m or 130 ft long, described as having an
- 0:57unusual metallic signature and a shape
- 1:00that some have compared to a gigantic
- 1:02Tic Tac.
- 1:03If even a fraction of these claims is
- 1:05[music] correct, what lies beneath
- 1:07Hawara may be far larger and far
- 1:09stranger than the ruined Egyptian temple
- 1:11visible today.
- 1:14The story leading to this moment begins
- 1:17more than a century earlier.
- 1:19During the late 19th century, British
- 1:21archaeologist Flinders Petrie excavated
- 1:24beside the pyramid of Pharaoh Amenemhat
- 1:26III at Hawara, near the Fayum Oasis.
- 1:31He discovered an extraordinary burial
- 1:32chamber deep beneath the pyramid,
- 1:35constructed from a single enormous block
- 1:36of polished yellow quartzite [music]
- 1:38weighing approximately 110 tons.
- 1:42Above it were three massive quartzite
- 1:44roof slabs, some weighing around 45
- 1:46tons, with additional layers of masonry
- 1:49designed to protect the chamber from the
- 1:51immense weight of the pyramid.
- 1:53Petrie reached and examined this
- 1:55remarkable structure in the late 19th
- 1:57century, even describing how its
- 1:59polished surfaces reflected the light of
- 2:01his candle.
- 2:03But groundwater at Hawara continued to
- 2:05rise dramatically during the following
- 2:07century, eventually flooding the
- 2:09pyramid's deepest passages and chambers.
- 2:12Today, [music] the extraordinary
- 2:13underground chamber Petrie explored is
- 2:15effectively inaccessible,
- 2:16>> [music]
- 2:17>> hidden beneath the pyramid and submerged
- 2:19in darkness and water, and there are no
- 2:21images or videos from it.
- 2:25South of the pyramid, he encountered the
- 2:27remains of an immense building whose
- 2:29stone had been almost completely
- 2:30stripped away in antiquity.
- 2:33What survived appeared to be little more
- 2:35than an enormous foundation field
- 2:37covered by later construction and
- 2:38debris.
- 2:40Petrie believed he had located the
- 2:42famous Egyptian Labyrinth, but there
- 2:44seemed to be almost nothing left to
- 2:45explore.
- 2:47The monumental building had apparently
- 2:48been used as a quarry, its blocks
- 2:51removed generation after generation
- 2:53until the architecture above ground
- 2:55disappeared.
- 2:56>> [music]
- 2:56>> For more than a century, this became the
- 2:58basic archaeological explanation for
- 3:01what happened at Hawara.
- 3:03The Labyrinth had been found, but the
- 3:05Labyrinth itself was gone.
- 3:08But Petrie may have missed one crucial
- 3:10detail.
- 3:11The Labyrinth described by the ancient
- 3:12writers did not exist on a single level.
- 3:15It continued underground.
- 3:18What he thought [music] was the
- 3:19foundation was actually the roof, and
- 3:21the Labyrinth wasn't destroyed, but was
- 3:24right under his feet, extending deep
- 3:25underground.
- 3:27If deeper chambers existed below the
- 3:29enormous foundation level,
- 3:31they could theoretically have survived
- 3:33the destruction taking place above them.
- 3:36What looked like the bottom of the
- 3:37monument might therefore have concealed
- 3:39another archaeological level.
- 3:42That possibility remained largely
- 3:43impossible to test until modern
- 3:46geophysical techniques allowed
- 3:48researchers to investigate the ground
- 3:50without excavating everything above it.
- 3:53In 2008, an Egyptian-Belgian project
- 3:56known as the Mataha Expedition, funded
- 3:59by Belgian researcher Louis de Cordier,
- 4:02arrived at Hawara to conduct one of the
- 4:03most important modern investigations of
- 4:06the suspected labyrinth area.
- 4:09Their objective was simple. Determine
- 4:11whether anything substantial remained
- 4:13beneath the ruins.
- 4:15What appeared in the measurements was
- 4:17far more interesting than scattered
- 4:18archaeological debris.
- 4:20Very low frequency electromagnetic
- 4:22surveying detected numerous elongated
- 4:25and rectangular anomalies beneath the
- 4:28area south of Amenemhat III's pyramid.
- 4:31Some appeared separated, while others
- 4:33seemed to connect into nearly enclosed
- 4:35geometric spaces.
- 4:37The researchers interpreted several of
- 4:39these signals as massive megalithic
- 4:41vertical walls.
- 4:43Some of these walls were several meters
- 4:44thick.
- 4:45More importantly, [music]
- 4:47they did not appear as isolated
- 4:48fragments, but formed patterns that
- 4:50looked remarkably architectural, just
- 4:52like a labyrinth.
- 4:53Rectangular spaces seemed to sit beside
- 4:56other rectangular spaces, creating
- 4:58something resembling an enormous
- 5:00underground grid.
- 5:01The survey covered only part of the
- 5:03suspected complex, meaning researchers
- 5:05could not determine where the pattern
- 5:07ended and massive this complex was.
- 5:10Then came the detail that made the
- 5:11results particularly difficult to
- 5:13ignore.
- 5:14Louis de Cordier later recalled being
- 5:16shown indications that some of the
- 5:18massive wall-like structures continued
- 5:20to depths greater than 17 m, or
- 5:23approximately 56 ft beneath the modern
- 5:25surface.
- 5:26That was considerably deeper than the
- 5:28roughly 5 m or 16-ft foundation level
- 5:31associated with the remains investigated
- 5:33by Petrie.
- 5:35If the interpretation was correct,
- 5:37something substantial existed beneath
- 5:39what had long been treated as the
- 5:41surviving bottom of the ancient
- 5:42monument.
- 5:44The implications were enormous.
- 5:46Petrie may have correctly discovered the
- 5:48labyrinth while simultaneously
- 5:50excavating only its destroyed uppermost
- 5:52remains.
- 5:54The immense foundation field
- 5:56>> [music]
- 5:56>> could conceal walls and chambers
- 5:58continuing downward beyond the level
- 6:00reached by 19th century archaeology.
- 6:03Instead of searching for a building that
- 6:05had vanished, researchers might have
- 6:06been standing on top of a building that
- 6:08had been buried.
- 6:11Recently Louis de Cordier appeared on
- 6:13the Danny Jones podcast where he gave
- 6:15some shocking details on the discoveries
- 6:17>> [music]
- 6:18>> and on the fact that Egyptian
- 6:19authorities have blacklisted him from
- 6:21ever entering Egypt due to his
- 6:23discoveries.
- 6:26He even speculates that the flooding of
- 6:27the underground chambers is done
- 6:29intentionally by the authorities to stop
- 6:32[music] any groundbreaking discoveries.
- 6:35>> The elements is metallic, so not stone
- 6:39and and and not wood, so it's
- 6:41>> Like an object.
- 6:42>> an object which is huge and from object
- 6:45is free standing.
- 6:46It's around 40 m.
- 6:48>> For sure.
- 6:49>> be disc-shaped.
- 6:51Might as well be more exotic like
- 6:55like a stargate.
- 6:57And we have no idea how old that is.
- 7:00Might even go all all the way
- 7:03for for tens of thousands of years, so
- 7:06we we we don't have any idea.
- 7:09>> In 2014
- 7:11researcher and filmmaker Carmen Boulter
- 7:13helped organize a satellite-based
- 7:15scanning project at Hawara searching for
- 7:17evidence of the legendary underground
- 7:19labyrinth of Egypt.
- 7:21The geoscan data revealed a vast network
- 7:24of enormous chambers and corridors
- 7:26hidden deep beneath the [music]
- 7:27archaeological site.
- 7:30From the scan data, her team produced a
- 7:32rudimentary three-dimensional
- 7:34reconstruction showing what they
- 7:35described as two distinct subterranean
- 7:38levels with the upper level apparently
- 7:40affected by ground water while the
- 7:42deeper level appeared dry.
- 7:44The project reported dozens of large
- 7:46underground spaces, including chambers
- 7:49of extraordinary dimensions, suggesting
- 7:51that the remains beneath Hawara
- 7:53could extend much deeper than the levels
- 7:55investigated by earlier archaeologists.
- 7:59For several years, however, the story
- 8:01remained there.
- 8:03Researchers had intriguing geophysical
- 8:05anomalies, but no excavation capable of
- 8:07following them downward.
- 8:09Then, in 2015, another investigation
- 8:13produced claims [music]
- 8:14that went far beyond anything reported
- 8:16by the Mataha expedition.
- 8:18This time, the investigation was
- 8:20associated with Timothy Akers of the
- 8:22British company Merlin Burrows.
- 8:25Akers analyzed satellite-derived data
- 8:27from Hawara and believed he could see
- 8:29structures far deeper than the earlier
- 8:31surveys had suggested.
- 8:33His scans showed enormous geometric
- 8:35patterns at approximately 80 to even 100
- 8:38m deep beneath the site.
- 8:40If those depths represent genuine
- 8:42architecture, Hawara would not contain
- 8:44merely a temple with subterranean
- 8:46chambers. It would contain a monumental
- 8:49underground environment extending
- 8:51downward approximately the height of a
- 8:5230-story building.
- 8:54The apparent levels were not interpreted
- 8:56as random structures scattered
- 8:58independently through the ground.
- 9:01Akers believed they belonged to a
- 9:02connected complex organized around an
- 9:05enormous central region.
- 9:07Different layers seemed to converge
- 9:09toward the same location.
- 9:11And at that location, he believed the
- 9:13data revealed an immense subterranean
- 9:15gallery.
- 9:17According to the interpretation later
- 9:18circulated by the Archaeological Rescue
- 9:20Foundation, this central space measured
- 9:24at least 40 m or 131 ft across and 100 m
- 9:29or 328 ft long.
- 9:32Surrounding it appeared additional
- 9:34chambers and what could potentially
- 9:36represent several architectural levels.
- 9:38This would not resemble a narrow
- 9:40Egyptian tomb consisting of corridors
- 9:42and small burial chambers. The proposed
- 9:45central hall alone would be comparable
- 9:47in length to a modern skyscraper laid
- 9:50horizontally underground.
- 9:52Multiple floors or passages may have
- 9:54overlooked the same enormous interior
- 9:56space, but Akers believed there was
- 9:58something inside it.
- 10:00Near the center of the gallery appeared
- 10:01a large isolated anomaly.
- 10:04Akers interpreted it as a free-standing
- 10:06object approximately 40 m or 130 ft
- 10:10long. Even stranger, he believed its
- 10:13material signature differed from the
- 10:15surrounding stone.
- 10:16He described it as metallic.
- 10:19The claim immediately transformed the
- 10:21Hawara mystery.
- 10:23Ancient Egyptians worked extensively
- 10:25with copper, gold, bronze, electrum, and
- 10:28other materials, so discovering metal at
- 10:31an Egyptian archaeological site would
- 10:33normally be unsurprising.
- 10:35But a metallic structure approximately
- 10:3740 m long occupying the center of an
- 10:40enormous underground chamber would be
- 10:42something completely different. Nothing
- 10:45presently known from Middle Kingdom
- 10:47Egypt obviously matches such a
- 10:49description.
- 10:51Depending on how the remote sensing
- 10:53image was interpreted, its form could
- 10:55resemble a large disc, a ring-like
- 10:58structure, or something elongated.
- 11:00Because of its smooth-looking outline,
- 11:03another comparison inevitably emerged.
- 11:06Some began describing it as resembling a
- 11:08gigantic Tic Tac, invoking comparisons
- 11:11to the declassified US documents and
- 11:13video footage of Tic Tac shaped UFOs.
- 11:16To of course, nothing in the Hawara data
- 11:19demonstrates that the object is a craft
- 11:21or anything extraterrestrial.
- 11:24The comparison refers only to the
- 11:26apparent shape of an unresolved anomaly.
- 11:29Yet the image is difficult to forget.
- 11:31Something approximately 130 ft long,
- 11:34apparently isolated inside a gigantic
- 11:37chamber far beneath an Egyptian
- 11:39archaeological site.
- 11:41If such an object were ever physically
- 11:43confirmed, determining its purpose would
- 11:45become one of the most extraordinary
- 11:47archaeological problems in Egypt.
- 11:50Could it really be some kind of advanced
- 11:52ancient technology, or perhaps something
- 11:54much different?
- 11:56And could that mean that this gigantic
- 11:58underground megastructure does not even
- 12:00belong to the Egyptians,
- 12:02but to a prehistoric civilization lost
- 12:05to history?
- 12:07A civilization far older and far more
- 12:09advanced than anything we know.
- 12:13Then came 2026.
- 12:16By March, excavation was underway in the
- 12:18labyrinth area.
- 12:20For the first time since the new remote
- 12:22sensing controversy began, researchers
- 12:24were physically removing the
- 12:25archaeological layers above the
- 12:27structures.
- 12:28Photographs released during the
- 12:30following months showed substantial
- 12:32masonry emerging from the sand.
- 12:34By July, project updates were describing
- 12:36a massive stone wall associated with the
- 12:38lost labyrinth. The excavation also
- 12:41began exposing the Middle Kingdom
- 12:42foundation level of the upper labyrinth
- 12:45temple.
- 12:46Later,
- 12:47>> [music]
- 12:47>> Greek and Roman occupation had covered
- 12:49and disturbed portions of the earlier
- 12:50remains.
- 12:52Archaeologists are therefore effectively
- 12:54peeling backward through the history of
- 12:56Hawara
- 12:57toward the period when the monumental
- 12:59complex existed.
- 13:01Once they establish precisely where the
- 13:03accepted foundation ends, the most
- 13:05important question begins.
- 13:07What is underneath it?
- 13:10This is where speculation about a
- 13:11forgotten civilization enters the
- 13:13mystery.
- 13:14Could Amenemhat III have built his
- 13:16monumental complex over something
- 13:18already ancient? Could Egyptian priests
- 13:21have inherited underground architecture
- 13:23whose original builders were already
- 13:25forgotten?
- 13:26Could the labyrinth of protected
- 13:28knowledge accumulated long before the
- 13:30Middle Kingdom
- 13:32And strangely, after all the scans, all
- 13:34the walls,
- 13:36all the unexplained anomalies and all
- 13:37the speculation about what could be
- 13:39buried there,
- 13:40the most extraordinary part of this
- 13:42story is that people were describing
- 13:44this massive structure more than 2,000
- 13:46years ago.
- 13:51Long before radar, satellites,
- 13:53electromagnetic surveying, or modern
- 13:55archaeology existed,
- 13:57>> [music]
- 13:57>> the Greek historian Herodotus traveled
- 13:59through Egypt during the 5th century BC.
- 14:03At Hawara, he claimed to have personally
- 14:05entered an architectural complex so
- 14:07enormous that he struggled to describe
- 14:09it.
- 14:10He wrote that the building contained 12
- 14:12roofed courts surrounded by monumental
- 14:14walls and approximately 3,000 chambers.
- 14:18Half were above ground and the other
- 14:20half were below. And galleries into
- 14:23further rooms in a sequence so
- 14:24astonishing that he considered the
- 14:26experience greater than anything he had
- 14:28seen among the famous works of Greece.
- 14:32Then he made an extraordinary
- 14:34comparison.
- 14:35He said the labyrinth was so
- 14:36extraordinary that it surpassed even the
- 14:38pyramids.
- 14:40In his words,
- 14:41"I saw it myself and I found it greater
- 14:43than words can say.
- 14:45For if one should put together all the
- 14:46buildings and great works produced by
- 14:48the Greeks,
- 14:49>> [music]
- 14:49>> they would prove to be inferior to this
- 14:51labyrinth. The labyrinth surpasses even
- 14:54the pyramids."
- 14:56But Herodotus did not see everything.
- 14:59Egyptian priests allowed him to explore
- 15:01the chambers above ground but refused to
- 15:03take him into the subterranean half,
- 15:05which were forbidden from entrance.
- 15:08He even said that there's a large
- 15:10pyramid underground situated at the end
- 15:12of the labyrinth.
- 15:16Centuries [music] later, Strabo
- 15:18described the labyrinth again.
- 15:20His account emphasized its bewildering
- 15:22arrangement of courts and passages.
- 15:24Moving through it without someone who
- 15:26knew the route was apparently extremely
- 15:28difficult.
- 15:30The building did not behave like a
- 15:31straightforward temple where a visitor
- 15:34simply walked from entrance to
- 15:35sanctuary.
- 15:36It was an architectural maze. Strabo
- 15:39also described enormous monolithic
- 15:41construction. Roofs and passages were
- 15:44formed using individual stones of
- 15:46extraordinary size with monumental
- 15:48sections constructed without timber.
- 15:51Other ancient authors added more
- 15:53details.
- 15:54Diodorus Siculus and Pliny the Elder
- 15:57preserved traditions of a vast Egyptian
- 15:59labyrinth filled with courts, temples,
- 16:02statues, ramps, dark passages, and
- 16:05chambers.
- 16:06Some descriptions even mentioned doors
- 16:08producing terrifying thunder-like sounds
- 16:10when opened.
- 16:12Whether those noises resulted from
- 16:14enormous stone doors, acoustic effects,
- 16:17ceremonial mechanisms, or some kind of
- 16:19advanced technology is impossible to
- 16:22know.
- 16:23But the consistency of the central claim
- 16:25is difficult to ignore.
- 16:28Today Hawara gives almost no indication
- 16:30of the extraordinary monument that once
- 16:32dominated this landscape.
- 16:34The pyramid of Amenemhat III no longer
- 16:37has the sharp geometric appearance we
- 16:39associate with the pyramids of Giza
- 16:42because its outer limestone casing has
- 16:44disappeared and its exposed mud-brick
- 16:46core has been heavily eroded.
- 16:49From a distance, it resembles a dark
- 16:51weathered mound rising above the flat
- 16:53desert surrounded by scattered stone
- 16:56blocks, excavation trenches, sand,
- 16:59agricultural land, and the nearby canal.
- 17:02South of the pyramid where the legendary
- 17:04labyrinth once stood, there is no
- 17:07gigantic temple visible today, only a
- 17:09broad archaeological field containing
- 17:12foundations, fragments of masonry,
- 17:14rubble, and traces of structures that
- 17:17are difficult to understand without
- 17:18seeing an archaeological plan.
- 17:21But approximately 3,800 years ago, the
- 17:24same view would have been almost
- 17:25unrecognizable.
- 17:27Instead of the crumbling brown mound
- 17:29visible today, Amenemhat III's pyramid
- 17:32would have risen approximately 58 m or
- 17:35190 ft above the complex as a clean
- 17:39geometric monument.
- 17:41Its mud brick core completely concealed
- 17:43beneath smooth blocks of fine white
- 17:45limestone.
- 17:47Under the Egyptian sun, the casing would
- 17:49have made the pyramid appear
- 17:50dramatically brighter than the exposed
- 17:53brown structure surviving today.
- 17:55Around it stretched the largest known
- 17:57Middle Kingdom pyramid enclosure,
- 17:59creating an enormous sacred landscape
- 18:02>> [music]
- 18:02>> rather than the isolated ruin seen at
- 18:04Hawara now.
- 18:06Ancient visitors described a colossal
- 18:08building at Hawara.
- 18:10They described countless chambers. They
- 18:12described confusing passages.
- 18:14>> [music]
- 18:14>> They described monumental stone
- 18:16construction. And most importantly, they
- 18:19described an underground level.
- 18:22More than 2,000 years later, modern
- 18:24instruments began to prove that all of
- 18:26the stories were true. That is precisely
- 18:28what makes the excavation now unfolding
- 18:30at Hawara so important.
- 18:33After centuries of descriptions,
- 18:34arguments, scans, and speculation,
- 18:37researchers finally have an opportunity
- 18:39to discover how much of the legendary
- 18:41lost labyrinth is actually still there.
- 18:46Long before recorded history, there may
- 18:48have existed advanced ancient
- 18:50civilizations capable of building
- 18:52gigantic megalithic structures that
- 18:54would still challenge us even today.
- 18:56They appear to have lifted enormous
- 18:58stone blocks weighing thousands of tons
- 19:01and stacked them with almost laser-like
- 19:02precision using methods we still cannot
- 19:05fully explain.
- 19:07Many of these blocks remain difficult to
- 19:09lift even with modern cranes, which
- 19:11makes their achievement seem even more
- 19:12extraordinary.
- 19:14They also shaped some of the hardest
- 19:15stone on Earth into mathematically
- 19:17precise and seemingly flawless
- 19:19monuments, leaving us to wonder who
- 19:21these builders were and how they
- 19:22accomplished what appears impossible.
- 19:24Were they truly just primitive
- 19:26societies?
- 19:27Or were they masters of a forgotten
- 19:29technology now lost to the sands of
- 19:31time?
- 19:32Explore the evidence pointing to an
- 19:34ancient, global, and technologically
