  4. 0:08on death row
  5. 0:09in 1990 the state of mississippi
  6. 0:11convicted her of capital murder for the
  7. 0:13death of her nine-month-old son
  8. 0:15walter butler was then sentenced to
  9. 0:18death but after a re-trial two years
  10. 0:20later her conviction was overturned
  11. 0:23butler who still lives in columbus says
  12. 0:25the pending execution for michelle byram
  13. 0:28really hits home for her when i heard
  14. 0:30and came across
  15. 0:31miss byron's case it really hurt me
  16. 0:34because
  17. 0:35well all of them do but she is actually
  18. 0:37in the same
  19. 0:38correctional facility where i was and on
  20. 0:41the same death row
  21. 0:42butler was just 17 years old when she
  22. 0:44was convicted and spent six and a half
  23. 0:46years behind bars
  24. 0:48she now travels the country speaking out
  25. 0:50against the death penalty as a member of
  26. 0:52the group
  27. 0:53witness to innocence she feels obligated
  28. 0:56to advocate for inmates and believes
  29. 0:58no matter the crime death is not the
  30. 1:01answer
  31. 1:01i just think that you cannot say
  32. 1:04to a person that has committed a crime
  33. 1:06that you are a murderer and you deserve
  34. 1:08to die
  35. 1:09and then you turn around and do to them
  36. 1:11what you're telling them they're wrong
  37. 1:13for doing
  38. 1:14i mean you're just as guilty as they are
  39. 1:16you killing them i mean that's kill
  40. 1:17that's murder
  41. 1:19murder is murder it doesn't matter how
  42. 1:20you do it the mississippi supreme court
  43. 1:23ruled that the prosecution failed to
  44. 1:25prove that her son's death was not an
  45. 1:27accident it's now believed that butler's
  46. 1:29son most likely died from polycystic
  47. 1:32kidney disease
  48. 1:33butler has been married for 18 years and
  49. 1:36has had
  50. 1:36two more children her nine-year-old
  51. 1:39daughter also
  52. 1:40has the same kidney disease tell me what
  53. 1:42it feels like to be the only woman in
  54. 1:45america to have been
  55. 1:46exonerated after being sentenced to
  56. 1:48death row
  57. 1:49it's lonely it's scary
  58. 1:52butler has also written a book exoneree
  59. 1:55the sabrina butler story
  60. 1:57i hope that i can make a change by
  61. 1:59speaking out and changing the system as
  62. 2:01it is as it currently is because it does
  63. 2:03not work in its present state
  64. 2:04currently there are 50 people in the
  65. 2:06state of mississippi on death row
