  1. 0:00I am addressing not only my Muslim brothers and sisters. I am also addressing governments and security services, because many of you have distorted information about the essence of Salafiyyah and about Salafis. In a few words, Salafiyyah is the correct understanding of Islam.
  2. 0:20Salafiyyah is like this white paper. The white is not added paint; it is the paper itself. The other colors were placed on top. Calling yourself a Salafi is not essential. I can simply say: I follow the righteous predecessors.
  3. 0:34By the righteous predecessors I mean the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and his Companions. My understanding of Islam is based on the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of the righteous predecessors: the Sahabah and the Tabi'in.
  4. 0:51Instead of saying all of that at length, I can say one word: I am a Salafi. The word salaf means a righteous predecessor. Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, then says: whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be with those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor.
  5. 1:14Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be with those whom Allah has favored, from among the Prophets. The one who obeys Allah fulfills what Allah commanded, and he obeys the Messenger in what the Messenger commanded.
  6. 1:34He will be with those whom Allah favored, including the Prophets. This does not mean that he will have the rank of a Prophet, but he will not be deprived of seeing the Prophets and being with them.
  7. 1:52He will see the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and the other Prophets. He will sit with them and speak with them. He will not be at the rank of the Prophets, for their ranks are higher, but he will be in their company.
  8. 2:09He will also be with as-Siddiqin, the truthful. The best of the Companions is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. The word Siddiq is an intensive form: it indicates a very high degree of truthfulness.
  9. 2:29And he will be with ash-Shuhada', the martyrs: those who became shuhada' in the path of Allah, and those who are counted among the shuhada' more generally. The ayah also mentions as-Salihin, the righteous.
  10. 2:48So whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be with those whom Allah has favored: the Prophets, as-Siddiqin, ash-Shuhada', and as-Salihin. Among as-Siddiqin is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq; then the ayah continues with the other categories.
  11. 3:08The scholars say that ash-Shuhada' are not limited only to those who fell on the battlefield; the 'ulama are also included in what the scholars mention here. And who is a salih? One who fulfills the rights of Allah and the rights of His servants.
  12. 3:24Allah says: 'And how excellent those companions are.' Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will have that company. There is also an indication here regarding Ashab al-Hadith—those who strive to study the Sunnah and follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet.
  13. 3:40They will be with those whom Allah has favored: the Prophets, as-Siddiqin, ash-Shuhada', and as-Salihin. Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is among the Prophets; Abu Bakr is from as-Siddiqin; and the Companions include the other great examples mentioned here.
  14. 4:01'And how excellent those companions are.' Imagine how wonderful it will be to have such companions in Paradise. In Arabic, a singular word may sometimes be used while referring to a group.
  15. 4:18For example, Allah says, 'Then We bring you forth as a child,' although He is addressing many people. Arabic has examples where the singular is used in this way. So, brothers, barakallahu fikum, this ayah is important for what follows.
  16. 4:39This ayah, as the scholars of tafsir say, explains the ayat in Surah al-Fatihah. Allah says: 'Guide us to the Straight Path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your favor.'
  17. 5:00Then: 'not of those who incurred anger, nor of those who went astray.' Al-maghdubi 'alayhim refers to the Jews: those who know but do not act. Ad-dallin refers to the Christians: those who act without knowledge. So who are those whom Allah favored?
  18. 5:16The scholars say, barakallahu fikum, that those whom Allah favored are the people mentioned in this ayah. Allah makes it clear: the Anbiya', as-Siddiqin such as Abu Bakr, ash-Shuhada', and as-Salihin.
  19. 5:33They include the other Companions of the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and those who followed them, including the Tabi'in. Abu Bakr is from as-Siddiqin; ash-Shuhada' include those like the great Companions; and as-Salihin include the other righteous believers.
  20. 5:50So 'Guide us to the Straight Path, the path of those You have favored' is explained by these people. This is a tafsir of Surah al-Fatihah. Barakallahu fikum, the second important point is no less important.
  21. 6:09This ayah, as the scholars say, is a proof for what we call Salafiyyah. Why? Because the Prophet, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, and the other Companions are our salaf. In Arabic, salaf means predecessors.
  22. 6:33Many people who fight this blessed manhaj of Salafiyyah still ask Allah in every salah, seventeen times a day, to guide them to the path of those righteous predecessors. Yet after the salah, some of them begin speaking against Salafis and Salafiyyah.
  23. 6:56Brothers, let us step a little away from tafsir, because the subject of Salafiyyah is very sensitive. We need to explain what Salafiyyah is, why it is called Salafiyyah, and why those who adhere to this path are called Salafis.
  24. 7:15Salafiyyah means following the righteous predecessors. A Salafi is the one who follows the righteous predecessors. In essence, Salafiyyah is following their path; it is a way and an approach to understanding the religion of Islam.
  25. 7:37In a few words, it is a method for understanding Islam. And again, I am addressing not only Muslim brothers and sisters but also governments and security services, because many of you have been given distorted information about Salafiyyah.
  26. 8:02I do not reproach or blame you for that. There are reasons: some people behave wrongly and are described to you as Salafis, so you draw conclusions while doing your work. I simply want to explain what Salafiyyah actually is so that you can distinguish and understand.
  27. 8:29At the very least, I want you to be informed. Even if you do not accept what I say, on the Day of Judgment I will have conveyed it to you. My Lord is my Creator and your Creator, my Master and your Master, and He will judge us all after you have heard what Salafiyyah is.
  28. 8:52After that, you will decide how to deal with Salafiyyah and Salafis, whether you are Muslim or non-Muslim. My duty is to convey the message. After that, your Lord will judge you, because you will die, I will die, and everyone will die.
  29. 9:10No human being is immortal. The best people in human history—the Prophets and Messengers—also died. And if you are an atheist, even the greatest figures in your own view have died. Whether you believe in accountability after death is your personal matter.
  30. 9:30I address Muslims and non-Muslims alike and say: Salafiyyah is not a sectarian movement, not a party, and not a sect. As we said, it is a way and an approach to understanding Islam. Salafis do not have such a concept as 'our representative' who speaks on behalf of everyone.
  31. 9:52Unlike what happens in different parties, jama'at, and sects, there is no central spokesman. Every Muslim who loves Allah and His Messenger, the Companions and the Tabi'in, and worships Allah on the basis of the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah is upon this way.
  32. 10:17He does not distort what the Messenger and his Companions transmitted, does not invent teachings they never taught, and does not introduce new religious matters that were unknown to them. This, in essence, is what Salafiyyah means.
  33. 10:42So many Muslims who love Allah and His Messenger, worship according to the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, and neither add nor subtract from the religion may in fact be upon this way even if they do not know the label 'Salafi.'
  34. 10:57Some of our scholars said that Ahl as-Sunnah are the most knowledgeable of people concerning the truth and the most merciful toward creation. When we see a Muslim who has gone astray, we say that he is mistaken, but we still say that he is a Muslim.
  35. 11:19The one whom we call mistaken may, in turn, say that we are not Muslims. He shows no mercy to us, while we show mercy to him. Salafiyyah, barakallahu fikum, is not a party, a faction, a sect, or an organization.
  36. 11:37We have no chairman, no special slogans, no emblem, and no separate flag. No one registers to join Salafis, and no one gives an oath of allegiance to some leader. We have no delegates or authorized representatives who speak in the name of all Salafis.
  37. 12:01There is no such structure. Whoever says that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and who honors Allah, His Messenger, and the Companions as Allah commanded, is upon this way.
  38. 12:23The same applies to honoring the Tabi'in and everything Allah commanded us to honor. A person may be a Salafi even if he does not know this label and even if he has never called himself by it. Someone may then ask a question.
  39. 12:42People ask: why do you call yourselves by this word, 'Salafi'? It sounds foreign to us. Why not simply call yourselves Muslims? We answer that we would never exchange the words Islam and Muslim for some other label.
  40. 13:02We would use no additional label if no one who departed from the principles I mentioned also called himself Muslim and claimed Islam. That is the reason an additional description sometimes becomes necessary.
  41. 13:21If there were no parties, sects, groups, and organizations all calling themselves Muslim and attributing themselves to Islam, we would simply call ourselves Muslims and would not need any other description.
  42. 13:40Here is a simple example. What color is this paper? White. White is its original, natural color. Think of it like a blank canvas on which a painting can be made.
  43. 14:06Now imagine someone comes and paints one spot, then another, then a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. You end up with a canvas covered in colors. This example helps explain what I mean by Salafiyyah.
  44. 14:37A person looking at the paper from the outside sees all these colors. He sees the white too, but may think the white is just another color painted onto the canvas, like the others.
  45. 14:57From the outside it appears to be one color among many. He does not realize that white is the original color of the paper itself, not something added later. In the same way, a person may misunderstand Salafiyyah.
  46. 15:20An uninformed Muslim or non-Muslim may look at all the groups and say: this is one sect, that is another group, and Salafiyyah is just one more organization. But the point of this example is that Salafiyyah is being presented as the original basis, not another added color.
  47. 15:43In our time there are Shi'ah Rawafid who say that one of the greatest ways of drawing near to Allah is to kill an adherent of the Sunnah—that is, someone who is not Shi'ah. Yet these Shi'ah also call themselves Muslims. And there are the Khawarij, including ISIS, a banned sect in CIS countries.
  48. 16:05They also say that they are Muslims. The Shi'ah, ISIS, al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun—all of them say that they are Muslims. All these colors on the paper call themselves Muslim.
  49. 16:29Hizb ut-Tahrir calls itself Muslim. Jama'at at-Tabligh calls itself Muslim. Philosophical and theological groups such as the Mu'tazilah, Ash'ariyyah, and Maturidiyyah also call themselves Muslim. I could go on listing groups, organizations, sects, and movements.
  50. 16:53They all call themselves Muslims. Every Salafi also calls himself Muslim and is proud of that word. But because so many different groups use the same name, sometimes a person needs an additional description to distinguish what he means.
  51. 17:17The white in the example is not one more added color. It represents what the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, brought and what his Companions followed. So sometimes I need to distinguish myself when someone from an extremist group also says, 'I am Muslim.'
  52. 17:39I say: I am a Muslim, but I am not from ISIS. I may have a beard, and a member of ISIS may have a beard, but that does not make us the same. I am not from Hizb ut-Tahrir, al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun, the takfiris, the Khawarij, revolutionaries, or rebels.
  53. 18:00I do not call people to rebel against rulers, to blow people up, to wear suicide belts, or to encourage anyone to kill himself. I am saying: this is who I am. I am not another added faction; I am describing the foundation upon which later additions were placed.
  54. 18:19That is what I want to convey to Muslims and non-Muslims. I sometimes distinguish myself by saying 'Salafi,' but the Arabic label is not essential. I can simply say: I follow the way of the righteous predecessors.
  55. 18:33That means the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and his Companions. My understanding of Islam is based on the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of the righteous predecessors—the Companions and the Tabi'in. To say all of that briefly, I say: I am a Salafi.
  56. 18:52The word salaf means the righteous predecessors. If someone thinks that the word Salafi is like saying Ikhwani, ISIS member, or the name of some other organization, sect, or movement, then this is a grave error concerning the meaning of the term.
  57. 19:07Unfortunately, even some people who attribute themselves to Salafiyyah think in this way. They imagine that we are one of the colored spots on the canvas and that Salafiyyah is a separate group, even if they do not say so explicitly.
  58. 19:24Sometimes their behavior shows it: they have an amir, and they give an oath of allegiance to that amir. But Salafiyyah is not like all these parties, organizations, and jama'at. As we said, Salafiyyah is a path of understanding the religion.
  59. 19:43Salafis are those who strive to understand the words of Allah and His Messenger, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, through the understanding of his Companions and the Tabi'in. Salafiyyah is not like a party: we have no special slogan, no single leader, and not even a particular country to which it belongs.
  60. 20:01Some call Salafiyyah 'Saudi.' But I am not Saudi, and many listeners are not Saudi either. We do not tie this way to a country, city, or nationality. Some also claim Salafis oppose national customs.
  61. 20:16No. If I am a Tatar Salafi from Russia, I can follow Tatar customs. If I am Uzbek, I can follow Uzbek customs. Customs are worldly matters; the discussion here is about how the religion itself is understood.
  62. 20:39If, hypothetically, we debated members of other groups and organizations, we could ask each of them: who founded your group or organization? Every organized movement has a founder or leadership history.
  63. 20:58Each of those groups can name the person to whom its group, organization, or school is traced. They can name their founders and explain how those movements began. The specific names in this portion must be checked against the original audio because the automatic captions are unclear.
  64. 21:19But if they asked us, we would say that the one with whom this path began was Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam. And who were with him? Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, radiyallahu 'anhum, and the other Companions.
  65. 21:39Among Salafis, unlike these organizations and jama'at, a person becomes great because of knowledge and fear of Allah, and becomes insignificant because of ignorance and distance from the religion, whoever he may be. We do not exalt people merely because of who they are; we look at their deeds.
  66. 22:00We look at a person's deeds. If someone who is counted among Salafis departs from the truth, people do not keep following him simply because of his name. They may turn away from him. This differs from party structures.
  67. 22:21In some groups, the longer someone promotes the party's ideas, the more important and respected he becomes inside that organization. It can resemble an army, where longer service brings a higher rank. Salafiyyah, as I am describing it, does not work that way.
  68. 22:39If you see something like this among people who call themselves Salafis, then, barakallahu fikum, Salafiyyah is free of what those people do. We must always distinguish between Salafiyyah and individual Salafis, just as there is Islam and there are individual Muslims.
  69. 22:59Islam itself is pure, good, and contains no evil, while individual Muslims can be bad and can commit evil. Do not confuse Islam with Muslims. Likewise, do not confuse Salafiyyah with individual Salafis. Our call is based on the fitrah—the natural disposition.
  70. 23:17Anyone who hears the call of Salafiyyah will see, barakallahu fikum, that Salafiyyah does not contradict sound reason. It is suitable for the twenty-first century—for the age of Tesla, iPhones, Samsung, and rockets—even though it was revealed more than fourteen hundred years ago.
  71. 23:37A person only needs to hear it. He will see that it does not contradict lawful customs or the order of the society in which he lives. The main thing is to hear it firsthand. Salafiyyah is a call to the fitrah, a call to the correct understanding of Islam, not a call to parties, organizations, or sects.
  72. 24:02It is not a call to parties, organizations, or sects. Salafis do not consider themselves inherently better than other people. This is an important point. If Allah enables one of us to call others to the religion, we do not see that as a reason for personal superiority.
  73. 24:23Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, has obligated us to do this. We teach people only because this is our duty, and we pursue no personal or political goals. By Allah, Allah is my witness: we have no personal goals; we are simply fulfilling what Allah commanded.
  74. 24:42We make no demands of anyone. We do not issue such statements, hold pickets, carry protest banners, or go to so-called peaceful rallies and similar things. We are completely free of that.
  75. 25:00We live among people, love people, and want good for them. We want safety and dislike division and conflict. We hate bloodshed, terrorism, extremism, and similar things, and we want nothing to do with them.
  76. 25:24Salafis dislike these things, hate them, remain far from them, and always warn against them. We seek refuge with Allah and declare ourselves free from every form of unjust takfir. We also say that we have nothing to do with demonstrations, coups, or revolutions.
  77. 25:42We also have nothing to do with killing, bloodshed, and similar things. We believe that if someone wants to change something on earth, he must do it only in the way our Lord, subhanahu wa ta'ala, has laid down in the Qur'an. Seeking reform while bypassing Allah's way is a great misguidance.
  78. 26:02This is what Salafis say: if someone wants to change something, he must act according to the laws Allah established. One of these laws is: 'If you help Allah, Allah will help you.' In other words, if you correct yourselves, Allah will correct your condition.
  79. 26:20As Allah says in another ayah: 'Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.'
  80. 26:37You are unhappy with your president. What do you say about him? 'He is a thief. He steals. He kills. He is unjust.' I can say to you plainly: it is you—you are unjust, you are killers. Why?
  81. 27:01Because Allah says in the Qur'an, in meaning: 'Thus We give some wrongdoers authority over others because of what they used to earn.' Everything you call your president—you yourselves may have those same qualities. And perhaps your president is not as you describe him.
  82. 27:18People were dissatisfied with Uthman, radiyallahu 'anhu, and called him unjust, while they themselves were unjust. Do you understand the point? And I am not speaking only about Muslim countries; I am also speaking about Christian and other non-Muslim countries.
  83. 27:39Before showing such dissatisfaction with your rulers, remember yourselves as teenagers and how dissatisfied you were with your parents. You asked your father to buy you a motorcycle and he refused. He may have punished you when he smelled cigarettes on you, and you thought your parents were unfair.
  84. 27:56Some of you even ran away from home for three days. Now you may show your ruler the same attitude you once showed your father. If I ask why you acted that way then, you may say, 'I was foolish.' Do not repeat that same foolishness now.
  85. 28:14So we Salafis are against what is happening now; we are against what many so-called callers to reform promote, even when they do it under the slogan of Islam. We always say that our Salafi call can succeed only upon peace, goodness, security, and tranquility.
  86. 28:31Anyone who thinks lasting success will come through force, harshness, war, coups, and similar methods will not succeed. When people live in peace and security, they have the opportunity and desire to learn and seek beneficial knowledge.
  87. 28:53Salafis teach people and become active in education during such stable times. When political upheaval, conflict, revolutions, and explosions occur, people often move away from seeking knowledge and begin to follow ignorance and emotion instead.
  88. 29:12Notice: in calm times we hardly hear the calls of al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun, Hizb ut-Tahrir, and similar sectarian movements. During revolutions, coups, political events, and different kinds of fitan, they appear, become active, and become significant in people's eyes.
  89. 29:27With Salafis it is the opposite; our position is contrary to that of the various parties, jama'at, and organizations. Salafis love security, and Salafis love good.
  90. 29:45They want good for countries in general and for the people living in them. All Salafis want is to teach people the religion. They pursue no personal goals, do not gather for parliamentary politics, and are not interested in politics. What they need is to spread the oneness of Allah among people.
  91. 30:04They seek no repayment or thanks from people. If they help the religion spread, they do not think this makes them better than others, because they regard what they do as worship and as fulfilling what Allah obligated them to do.
  92. 30:21They regard this duty like prayer: a person does not reproach others by saying, 'Thank me because I pray.' Likewise, when they call people, they do not reproach them for it. Their task is to convey; a person may accept or reject.
  93. 30:38As we discussed: 'You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills.' They call people to Allah, teach them, and reproach no one. They seek only the pleasure of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
  94. 30:53I ask Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, to make us among them and keep us firm. If a person is sincere and truthful, the barakah—the blessing—of his call will spread, and we will see its effects even if he is alone.
  95. 31:11Look at the example of Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and the scholars of this community. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah was slandered, imprisoned because of that slander, and died in prison.
  96. 31:29Several centuries later, an entire state arose professing what Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah taught. He invented nothing; what he said was what the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, his Companions, and the Tabi'in had said. Truthful words are not lost.
  97. 31:45Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, says, in meaning: whoever has taqwa of Allah—obeys His commands, avoids His prohibitions—and is patient, Allah does not let the reward of the muhsinin go to waste. There will be victory when you are truthful, fear Allah, and are patient.
  98. 32:02If you call to the Qur'an and the Sunnah and stay away from what these sects call to, there will be victory. You may see it, or those after you may see it. If we trust Allah and remain patient on this path, Allah will make this call blessed.
  99. 32:19And, in sha' Allah, there will be reward for us by the permission of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, both in this world and in the Hereafter. As we said, we may see the result or we may not. Salafis, brothers, address people upon their fitrah—their natural disposition.
  100. 32:36There is nothing better or stronger than addressing people upon the fitrah, and all people need such a call. I ask Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, to accept our good deeds, teach us beneficial knowledge, and grant us the correct understanding of Salafiyyah.
  101. 32:51Brothers, this is the only correct understanding of Islam. There is no correct and incorrect Islam; Islam is one, while people's understandings differ. Salafiyyah is the correct understanding of Islam. The calls of various sects today are based on their own ideas.
  102. 33:08Whereas the Salafi call is based on revelation from Allah and on the authentic Sunnah. You can see this in lectures, writings, social-media channels, and articles. Salafis say: Qur'an and Sunnah, Qur'an and Sunnah, Qur'an and Sunnah.
  103. 33:25They teach Qur'an and Sunnah, ayat and hadith. Unlike the various groups and jama'at, Salafis strive to study the words of Allah and His Messenger, the words of the Sahabah, and then convey this knowledge to people. Salafis do not rely on bare opinions based on desires.
  104. 33:42They do not base themselves on what the mass media spread. The media aim to give people a certain program and way of thinking, and everyone knows who stands behind them. Salafis, however, have a different foundation.
  105. 33:57They have a firm foundation and rely on clear principles that do not change or become distorted depending on what the media say. They do not change their religious positions because of that. Someone who attributes himself to Salafiyyah may, however, speak about political matters.
  106. 34:16Sometimes a person who attributes himself to Salafiyyah may begin discussing political matters or worldly issues. That happens. But we must know that this is strictly his personal opinion and his personal view; it is not a position on behalf of all Salafis, because we have no representative who speaks for us all.
  107. 34:35We have no representative who speaks for us all; it is simply that person's view. The same applies to worldly matters we hear from a Salafi. If he makes a mistake in political analysis, we must not blame Salafiyyah for it.
  108. 34:50We say only: this Salafi was mistaken in his opinion or point of view, barakallahu fikum. What a Salafi says in such worldly matters can be accepted or rejected. But as for the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, these are firm foundations and always stand above any person's opinion.
  109. 35:10This is the essence of Salafiyyah. In a few words, Salafiyyah is the correct understanding of Islam. Salafiyyah is like this white part: it is not paint added later; it is the paper itself, while all the other colors are spots placed on top.
