  2. 0:06today we are thrilled I'm really
  3. 0:08thrilled to be joined by Joe lorri
  4. 0:10president of global lithium LLC as our
  5. 0:12guest with over two decades of
  6. 0:14experience in the lithium industry and
  7. 0:16extensive work in the US Japan and China
  8. 0:19Joe has earned the nickname of Mr
  9. 0:21lithium he has been a key figure in the
  10. 0:23lithium ion battery industry since its
  11. 0:27early days and has held significant role
  12. 0:30in Asia Pacific his company Global
  13. 0:33lithium LLC offers expert advisory
  14. 0:35Services globally including market
  15. 0:37analysis and strategy development Joe
  16. 0:39welcome to the show thank you very much
  17. 0:41I have to say as a podcaster I am so
  18. 0:44excited I love speaking with people who
  19. 0:46are usually on the other side of the
  20. 0:47table or the other side of the mic as we
  21. 0:49might say so with that and and now you
  22. 0:51are now on that side of the mic I am so
  23. 0:54with that said I would love to first of
  24. 0:56all just get an understanding of how you
  25. 0:57became known as Mr lithium did you start
  26. 1:00calling yourself that that people say
  27. 1:01Hey you are that man like how did that
  28. 1:03happen no I
  29. 1:05am not Mr lithium I am the the original
  30. 1:09Mr lithium was a guy named Jerry orasm
  31. 1:12and he started going to Japan in the
  32. 1:1470s and he earned the nickname the
  33. 1:18Japanese called him Mr lithium so when I
  34. 1:21kind of took over the business from
  35. 1:25him um and I
  36. 1:28behaved they transferred that mantle to
  37. 1:32me so it was it was a great
  38. 1:35compliment but I actually view myself as
  39. 1:37the Forest Gump of lithium so I don't
  40. 1:39take that Mr lithium thing that
  41. 1:41seriously so when you say that you were
  42. 1:42the Forest Gump of lithium what what
  43. 1:44does that mean right place right time
  44. 1:47accidental I mean I just happened to be
  45. 1:50responsible for the products that were
  46. 1:52adopted for use in the lithium ion
  47. 1:55battery Sony happened to pick our
  48. 1:58product I became the first guy not
  49. 2:01because I was smart or good it's because
  50. 2:04I was there okay so we'll talk about I
  51. 2:06want to get into the podcast obviously
  52. 2:07but I want to talk about being there
  53. 2:09what does that mean you make it sound so
  54. 2:10easy but I'm assuming there are
  55. 2:12relationships you have to build
  56. 2:13Partnerships you have to maintain let's
  57. 2:15talk about building 100% I first went to
  58. 2:18Japan you know in the '90s
  59. 2:21and Sony had gotten the product through
  60. 2:25a joint venture partner we had in Japan
  61. 2:27but it was it was fmc's product I was
  62. 2:29working for f MC lithium at the time and
  63. 2:33you know I I never really was interested
  64. 2:35in Japan and I went and the culture
  65. 2:38fascinated me if you've been to Tokyo or
  66. 2:41Osaka now there's English signs all over
  67. 2:44the the training announcements are in
  68. 2:45English the train stations are all
  69. 2:47numbered there was none of that when I
  70. 2:50first went so if you couldn't read
  71. 2:53Japanese you literally couldn't get on a
  72. 2:56train you know and and that's what they
  73. 2:58kind of like that cuz they had like lead
  74. 3:00us around like sheep so after my first
  75. 3:03trip I bought some pimsler Japanese
  76. 3:05language tapes en listed to them
  77. 3:09incessantly and so the next time I went
  78. 3:11over there I could order a beer or green
  79. 3:13tea ice cream or and they thought that
  80. 3:15was
  81. 3:16cute and I learned more and more and
  82. 3:20then when I moved over there I had a
  83. 3:23great Japanese teacher I took it Monday
  84. 3:24Wednesday and Friday and then all of a
  85. 3:26sudden they couldn't talk trash in front
  86. 3:28of us
  87. 3:31because I I understood so I mean but
  88. 3:34doing that got me
  89. 3:36respect and got it wasn't like just
  90. 3:40another gyen coming over loud American
  91. 3:44who said we won the big one or something
  92. 3:46like that I tried to be very respectful
  93. 3:48of the culture I read a lot of books
  94. 3:50about how to
  95. 3:52behave and you know so I I think that
  96. 3:55was the Genesis of starting to build
  97. 3:57relationships the other thing was I was
  98. 3:59over there there for the 20 years
  99. 4:01between 95 and 2015 I spent a lot more
  100. 4:04time in Japan than I did in the United
  101. 4:05States cuz I lived there for 5 years
  102. 4:07then I lived in China for 5 years but I
  103. 4:09I went every month to Japan and then
  104. 4:12after I moved back I was going about
  105. 4:14every month so you know I mean you build
  106. 4:17relationships but the typical playbook
  107. 4:19for American companies was they switch
  108. 4:21guys around all the time so as I would
  109. 4:24see them switch guys I would start
  110. 4:26calling them out for you know how many
  111. 4:28of you guys am I going to have to you
  112. 4:30know no sure and yeah it was it was a it
  113. 4:32was a different thing but it I think the
  114. 4:35fact that I was genuinely fascinated
  115. 4:37with the culture and I did I took the
  116. 4:38Japanese language equivalency test I did
  117. 4:40a lot of stuff that people didn't do
  118. 4:42yeah so and I'm wondering too FMC you
  119. 4:45know that's kind of what the springboard
  120. 4:47if you will but your your interest in
  121. 4:49that market a lot a lot of the folks
  122. 4:51we've talked to have talked about Market
  123. 4:52sizing identifying a market tell me how
  124. 4:54you identify that that's the market I
  125. 4:56need to lean into I need to learn the
  126. 4:57language I need to pick up on the
  127. 4:58Customs how you identify that it's a
  128. 5:00great question the interesting thing was
  129. 5:03is What attracted me to lithium and the
  130. 5:06lithium ion battery didn't exist when I
  131. 5:09started what I loved about lithium and
  132. 5:12what it I I wanted to be in the business
  133. 5:14two things it was a small company you
  134. 5:17could get a lot of you could get Global
  135. 5:19responsibility quickly and then just be
  136. 5:21traveling all over the world and you
  137. 5:24know so that fascinated me but we were
  138. 5:26you know I sold the 3M there's lithium
  139. 5:28in two places in posted
  140. 5:30seeven the seven and seven Up is lithium
  141. 5:33um glass grease so I got to go into all
  142. 5:37different sorts of businesses it was
  143. 5:39fascinating learning learning that all
  144. 5:41those different businesses so it was
  145. 5:43never a boring and lithium was two two
  146. 5:47companies back then and most of the our
  147. 5:50customers had dual sourcing requirements
  148. 5:54so you had to be an idiot to to go to
  149. 5:57zero share anywhere because you had to
  150. 5:59really do you so I because you know it
  151. 6:01was about share swings back then cuz
  152. 6:03there were literally two lithium
  153. 6:05companies in the Western World back then
  154. 6:08and I'm wondering too looking at where
  155. 6:10it started and where we are now your
  156. 6:13approach to learning you seem to be a
  157. 6:15big learning Enthusiast how would
  158. 6:18someone who's entering the space now
  159. 6:21have that same sort of success or at
  160. 6:23least a similar trajectory but there is
  161. 6:26a much broader Market if you will in
  162. 6:29various entry
  163. 6:31points that's also an interesting
  164. 6:33question and I will self-servingly say
  165. 6:37Self Serve away that if and and I hear
  166. 6:41this a lot from podcast listeners that
  167. 6:43that's people will go through the
  168. 6:45catalog there's 190 episodes out there
  169. 6:48actually after my friend over here sends
  170. 6:51me the file from the podcast I just
  171. 6:53recorded there's going to be 191 and I I
  172. 6:58I just when I finished the podcast just
  173. 7:00a few minutes ago three different people
  174. 7:02came up and thanked me for for doing it
  175. 7:04and a lot of people said that's how they
  176. 7:06that's how they learned the industry so
  177. 7:09when I
  178. 7:10started there there were no books on
  179. 7:13lithium you it was really you learn from
  180. 7:15your
  181. 7:16elders
  182. 7:18basically and I had a issue because I
  183. 7:21wasn't a chemical engineer I was a
  184. 7:23finance guy that decided I wanted a
  185. 7:25technical job and they said the HR guy
  186. 7:27said you can never have that you're it's
  187. 7:29a pipe train and 2 years later I was
  188. 7:33commercial and he was gone so things
  189. 7:37work out commercial and he was gone so
  190. 7:40with that said I want to hear a bit
  191. 7:41about your leadership philosophy um
  192. 7:44being in this role clearly you're just
  193. 7:47you're a fantastic Natural Born
  194. 7:49podcaster clearly you have lots of
  195. 7:51Acumen around this industry what key
  196. 7:55traits do you feel have served you well
  197. 7:58in terms of leadership qualities that
  198. 8:00have helped you to hone your craft here
  199. 8:03I managed to type A
  200. 8:05personality in cultures that don't like
  201. 8:09type A personalities you have to learn
  202. 8:11to be self-aware enough to modify your
  203. 8:14behavior to you go to Japan and act like
  204. 8:17the typical aggressive American and bad
  205. 8:20things happen and it's just a typical
  206. 8:23thing where the classic misnomer when
  207. 8:26you go to Japan
  208. 8:27is Americans learn that hi means
  209. 8:31yes hi hi hi it just means keep talking
  210. 8:35doesn't mean they agree with you and so
  211. 8:38they'll spend a week in meetings first
  212. 8:40trip it's a classic you know I saw it
  213. 8:43happen with people in my company and
  214. 8:44people in other companies they come over
  215. 8:47they think they're rock stars cuz these
  216. 8:48guys agree with everything I say you
  217. 8:50know and then they get back and start
  218. 8:52following up and people no no we're not
  219. 8:54doing that they those guys are such
  220. 8:56Liars they said hi hi hi you know so I
  221. 8:58mean it's just you but if you're not
  222. 9:02trying to pick up cues and trying to
  223. 9:04learn
  224. 9:06then you're going to make the classic
  225. 9:08mistakes and I made I made a lot of
  226. 9:10classic mistakes but I didn't make make
  227. 9:12them twice so what this interesting what
  228. 9:14I'm hearing is that as a leader you need
  229. 9:16to be aware and listen to others so it's
  230. 9:18not really about you but it's about
  231. 9:20others and having that awareness and
  232. 9:22really understanding their context well
  233. 9:24when when you're a guy that doesn't have
  234. 9:28the chemical engineering degree and
  235. 9:30you're
  236. 9:31selling you have to then decide how
  237. 9:33you're going to deal with that and I
  238. 9:34dealt with it by asking a lot of
  239. 9:37questions and learning from the best and
  240. 9:39I also I I said to my boss and that how
  241. 9:43I got the job was I said we had a new
  242. 9:45guy come in and I was still in finance
  243. 9:47at the time a new leader and he asked me
  244. 9:50what I thought and I thought well you
  245. 9:51got a bunch of chemical Engineers who
  246. 9:53think they're selling chemicals and
  247. 9:54they're selling Financial return they
  248. 9:56don't even know what they're selling and
  249. 9:59I that's how I got the job I said I said
  250. 10:01I I would he goes like what would you do
  251. 10:03and I said IID take a completely
  252. 10:04different approach and sell economics
  253. 10:07not sell molecules so skill set was huge
  254. 10:10you had a skill in finance and it paid
  255. 10:13off I yeah well I had a I didn't have a
  256. 10:15skill I needed so I had to work do a
  257. 10:17work around had yeah yeah I'm curious do
  258. 10:20you think that you mentioned asking
  259. 10:22questions do you think that podcasting
  260. 10:24has helped you gain a strategic
  261. 10:26Advantage because about think about the
  262. 10:27questions that you ask how you ask and
  263. 10:29how how you approach interviews what
  264. 10:30about that has given you an advantage
  265. 10:32that others don't have yeah I I think I
  266. 10:37always had a Natural Curiosity
  267. 10:40anyway
  268. 10:42and when you live in two different
  269. 10:44cultures and you know Japan and China
  270. 10:47are both Confucian cultures but they're
  271. 10:49not the same so you had to learn how to
  272. 10:55to get the most out of people and a lot
  273. 10:57of that was by asking the right
  274. 10:58questions and getting to their
  275. 11:00motivations and learning from that in
  276. 11:03terms of how you understand how how
  277. 11:05people are motivated I mean in business
  278. 11:08there is money of course there is praise
  279. 11:10and we've talked about this as a theme
  280. 11:12how do you get to that from a business
  281. 11:13perspective yeah you know and I will
  282. 11:15honestly tell you that when I first
  283. 11:16moved to China in
  284. 11:192005 it if you were bilingual and you
  285. 11:22know all the multinationals going over
  286. 11:24there needed B at least some bilingual
  287. 11:27people if you were an American company
  288. 11:29to have people that spoke
  289. 11:30Chinese
  290. 11:32and
  291. 11:34I had the um smarts I guess at the time
  292. 11:38to I hired a guy that had worked for
  293. 11:41three
  294. 11:42multinationals and he was expensive
  295. 11:44because he had the skill set he'd work
  296. 11:46for pro gamble he'd work for alen he'd
  297. 11:49work for free
  298. 11:50toay
  299. 11:53and I basically said look I'm a talking
  300. 11:57head here as they it my success is going
  301. 12:00to be based on how good you
  302. 12:01are and I'll do anything I need to do to
  303. 12:05affect your success because your success
  304. 12:08is my ultimately my success and he said
  305. 12:11to me goes you
  306. 12:13know Chinese that at that time you could
  307. 12:15you could just walk out the door walk
  308. 12:17down the street and interview with
  309. 12:18somebody else and get a 25 or 50% raise
  310. 12:21and that was kind of the boom time of
  311. 12:23American companies going over there and
  312. 12:25uh he said to me you know
  313. 12:29I wouldn't leave this
  314. 12:32company you know I'm invested in my boss
  315. 12:36I mean this this conversation took place
  316. 12:37later but it was and I I think I got
  317. 12:42that in a deeper level but he
  318. 12:46articulated it that you know we we leave
  319. 12:50companies because you never leave a good
  320. 12:52boss yeah it's easy to leave a company
  321. 12:55it's hard to leave a good boss with with
  322. 12:58that I love that example and with that
  323. 13:00said I'm wondering what type of advice
  324. 13:02would you give to someone who is looking
  325. 13:04into entering into a space and you know
  326. 13:07what the market is different may be they
  327. 13:09don't have the options that that person
  328. 13:11had but they really want to understand
  329. 13:14how to get in how should they present
  330. 13:16their motivations and say you know for a
  331. 13:17lot of folks money is a motivator but we
  332. 13:19know that companies have budgets and if
  333. 13:21you fall outside of that budget you
  334. 13:22mentioned he was expensive if you're
  335. 13:23expensive you may not get the job
  336. 13:25because we have a budget how would you
  337. 13:26recommend someone think through how they
  338. 13:29present themselves particularly in this
  339. 13:31industry if there are some nuances there
  340. 13:33well I I think you have you have to know
  341. 13:36deep inside
  342. 13:38yourself what you want out of the job
  343. 13:41and yet there's a money component to it
  344. 13:43but I mean it's it's pretty well proven
  345. 13:45that some of the most unhappy people on
  346. 13:47this planet are billionaires so I think
  347. 13:50you have to find your comfort
  348. 13:55level and then you know the company has
  349. 13:59to continue to meet growth needs that
  350. 14:02you have but you have to I one of the
  351. 14:06things that I work for a very autocratic
  352. 14:09hard hard NOS company and the best
  353. 14:12advice I got in that regard
  354. 14:15was what what happens to you is totally
  355. 14:17up to you but I also ignored every job
  356. 14:20description I ever had that was a core
  357. 14:23that was a fundamental of I I didn't
  358. 14:25care what the job JD said so you're
  359. 14:27going above and beyond you took and you
  360. 14:29added 20% to well it's it wasn't even
  361. 14:31about that it was like a lot of times
  362. 14:33the job description is wrong I mean it
  363. 14:35it was like for my success in Asia if I
  364. 14:37have followed my job description I'd
  365. 14:40have failed so cuz it was like a linear
  366. 14:44an autocratic organization and I wasn't
  367. 14:47going to succeed by following the
  368. 14:50typical Playbook cuz I had to
  369. 14:52make the customers in Japan feel like my
  370. 14:57partners and ultimately
  371. 15:01we had a new CEO come in and he said
  372. 15:03you've done a terrible job because
  373. 15:06they're loyal to you and they should be
  374. 15:09loyal to the company and I said you
  375. 15:11don't understand where you
  376. 15:12are so that aw it was not it was not a
  377. 15:15warm and fuzzy conversation let's that
  378. 15:17way the awareness stands out there and
  379. 15:19then that's a perfect segue because I
  380. 15:21was going to talk to you about how to
  381. 15:23have challenging conversations I mean
  382. 15:24you talk about when you onboarded this
  383. 15:26person what a tremendous Talent they
  384. 15:27were but a lot with those positive
  385. 15:29stories there are some stories where
  386. 15:31you've had to give constructive feedback
  387. 15:33or you've had to say you know what this
  388. 15:35just isn't a fit what are the best ways
  389. 15:37that you found to effectively do that in
  390. 15:40a way that you felt um maintain the
  391. 15:43other person's Integrity dignity and
  392. 15:44yours as well yeah and I think
  393. 15:47it's it's like what your if you you know
  394. 15:51your mother would do to you too it's
  395. 15:52like make you think it was your idea
  396. 15:55make you think it's like maybe you need
  397. 15:56to change but have conversations that
  398. 16:00weren't like I mean if there's
  399. 16:01a performance issue that's very clear
  400. 16:05there's objective facts you you can
  401. 16:07present
  402. 16:08but you especially in the Japanese
  403. 16:13culture and the Chinese culture face is
  404. 16:16everything face face time yeah no well
  405. 16:20the concept of face is you don't make
  406. 16:22somebody lose face you don't make
  407. 16:23somebody feel bad about themselves you
  408. 16:25don't insult somebody I mean it's I mean
  409. 16:27that's why it was very funny because the
  410. 16:29first the guy who sent me over
  411. 16:32there he'd come over four times a year
  412. 16:34and he'd see me in meetings and he'd be
  413. 16:37like wow I can't believe you can sit
  414. 16:41here and be patient cuz he knows I'm I
  415. 16:44wasn't a I'm not a patient person but I
  416. 16:46sit in meetings and you know a 15minute
  417. 16:49meeting would take four hours I mean
  418. 16:50that was a kind cuz you you got to talk
  419. 16:52about the weather for 20 minutes you got
  420. 16:54there's a whole cultural meu that goes
  421. 16:57on and that's completely opposite to our
  422. 17:00culture and he and he I said so this
  423. 17:03surprises you and he goes yeah and I
  424. 17:05said so you sent me over here to fail
  425. 17:07basically that's what you're
  426. 17:08telling I said if you didn't think I
  427. 17:10could do this why you know it was it was
  428. 17:15an interesting moment for both of us
  429. 17:17yeah yeah have you could you talk about
  430. 17:19some experiences where people call it
  431. 17:21failure some people say they're growth
  432. 17:23opportunities opportunities to grow but
  433. 17:25an experience that you've had that
  434. 17:26really took you to the depths in some
  435. 17:28way cause you to question some things
  436. 17:30and how that was a tremendous learning
  437. 17:32experience for you yeah I
  438. 17:36got you know I I always viewed it as
  439. 17:39playing the long game and there were
  440. 17:41times in the industry where I I had the
  441. 17:44power position because it was a shortage
  442. 17:46of product I was the only we were the
  443. 17:48only company that produced it and I had
  444. 17:50huge
  445. 17:51leverage but you never you know the way
  446. 17:54you treat people on the way up is the
  447. 17:57way you're going to get treated on the
  448. 17:59way down heard that before and so I
  449. 18:02always every price increase every time I
  450. 18:06I had the advantage I always apologize
  451. 18:09for like raising price and I would go
  452. 18:11into you know the just and it
  453. 18:14was in in a way you could say well
  454. 18:17that's just kind of a BS in it is but if
  455. 18:21the culture wants
  456. 18:22that you you give it to him and and I
  457. 18:27yeah I mean I just I just tried to learn
  458. 18:29what the it wasn't just what they wanted
  459. 18:32to hear but they needed to feel good
  460. 18:35about my motivations and that's why I
  461. 18:38got trusted as much as I did because
  462. 18:41that's why they said it was really funny
  463. 18:43that the CEO conversation that I had our
  464. 18:46biggest
  465. 18:48customer goes up to a guy who's up to
  466. 18:50the board level himself in a much bigger
  467. 18:52organization than
  468. 18:54ours and he thought he was giving me
  469. 18:57face by saying to my
  470. 18:59CEO oh we don't buy from FMC we buy from
  471. 19:04Joe
  472. 19:04S and I I told him later I said man you
  473. 19:08just signed my death Lauren but I
  474. 19:09appreciate it so that was really one of
  475. 19:11the lower points for of your career
  476. 19:13because oh yeah I got I got I got I felt
  477. 19:18I had succeeded in both countries and I
  478. 19:19had I mean all the metrics I had
  479. 19:21succeeded but when you get a new guy in
  480. 19:24who doesn't really understand how all
  481. 19:25this works but he's the power player and
  482. 19:27he just basically calls you a massive
  483. 19:29failure because in his mind everybody
  484. 19:31should always say they love the company
  485. 19:33and I said you don't get it I am the
  486. 19:35company to them MH MH because before me
  487. 19:39they had a new guy every two years and
  488. 19:41they hated that and I've I've been here
  489. 19:4410 or 20 or what I mean the
  490. 19:47relationships I had were multi-decade
  491. 19:50and that was not and I you asked another
  492. 19:53question that I I don't think I fully
  493. 19:54answered it was really about I decided
  494. 19:57to stay in lithium
  495. 19:59two years in and they tried to promote
  496. 20:02me out of that
  497. 20:03division multiple times and I said
  498. 20:06no because I knew I couldn't get what I
  499. 20:09had
  500. 20:11there making pesticides or you know the
  501. 20:14there wasn't any other businesses the
  502. 20:16company had that I wanted to do so I
  503. 20:18said you know I said if that's it I'm
  504. 20:20I'll go and I'll I'll I'll go work for a
  505. 20:22different Lithium company and there
  506. 20:23weren't a whole lot of options back then
  507. 20:25so you could say that and because of
  508. 20:26what you brought to the firm they
  509. 20:28swiftly pivoted and said no we change
  510. 20:30our mind let's let's well it was funny
  511. 20:34because and and I I leveraged this too
  512. 20:36everybody thought I was over there
  513. 20:38suffering in Asia because nobody really
  514. 20:40understood Asia and they thought well
  515. 20:41you got to eat funny food and they don't
  516. 20:44I mean the first time I went back to
  517. 20:45North Carolina after being gone a year I
  518. 20:49CU I kept my I wanted to keep my kids
  519. 20:50out of the country for a full year
  520. 20:52because I of the homesickness issue I
  521. 20:54wanted them to be fully immersed we came
  522. 20:57back and I I was at at a club swim club
  523. 21:01and this guy was a dentist so he wasn't
  524. 21:04like the village idiot and he comes up
  525. 21:05and goes how you doing with that Chinese
  526. 21:08and I said what do you
  527. 21:10mean I said Oh you mean Japanese he goes
  528. 21:13oh is that what they speak over there I
  529. 21:15mean it was just it was
  530. 21:17beautiful wow it's you know it's a small
  531. 21:19town moment because I mean literally
  532. 21:21this and I it's it's maybe hard for you
  533. 21:25to Fathom too but there was a lot of
  534. 21:27that and North Carolina and where I grew
  535. 21:30up in Upstate New York near Buffalo in a
  536. 21:31small town so people just didn't have
  537. 21:34any
  538. 21:35cultural awareness well now you are the
  539. 21:39Mr lithium and thanks to you I'm sure a
  540. 21:41lot of them have that awareness I want
  541. 21:43to hear about what inspires you so this
  542. 21:46is a industry that is fast-paced we hear
  543. 21:49a lot from the regulatory perspective
  544. 21:51policy we also hear a lot going on in
  545. 21:54the industry itself with other
  546. 21:55organizations what is it that motivates
  547. 21:58you what do you think about when you get
  548. 22:00up in the morning what what are you who
  549. 22:02are you listening to who who inspires
  550. 22:03you where's the inspiration coming from
  551. 22:05I mean I think I think as you
  552. 22:06age and you know I'm I'm 67 so I've been
  553. 22:10around for a while um your motivation
  554. 22:13changes cuz I'm not trying to climb the
  555. 22:16mountain
  556. 22:17anymore I'm trying to help people learn
  557. 22:20I'm trying to put people together I'm
  558. 22:23trying
  559. 22:24to take what I
  560. 22:27know and make make other people's
  561. 22:29situations better I mean it's just
  562. 22:32pretty simple I mean it's like Golden
  563. 22:33Rule stuff yeah yeah fantastic I I'd
  564. 22:37love to get into a quick question about
  565. 22:38the podcast to all the podcasters out
  566. 22:41there give us your success strategy what
  567. 22:44levers do you have that has really
  568. 22:46you're laughing that have really
  569. 22:47supported you have such the amazing
  570. 22:49following that you have you using this
  571. 22:51as an educational tool you making this
  572. 22:54content around the industry more
  573. 22:56accessible those are things that you are
  574. 22:57doing how is it if you were to map out
  575. 23:00for someone your strategy for how you
  576. 23:01get that done what would you say to them
  577. 23:03the top three things would you say to
  578. 23:04again this is this is a forest gum thing
  579. 23:06I mean I just got lucky I I did my first
  580. 23:09podcast in November of 17 in Buenos
  581. 23:12areis and um had a friend I knew that
  582. 23:16was there and we were in the studio and
  583. 23:20I love podcast I was listening to Tim
  584. 23:22Ferris and a bunch of You Know This
  585. 23:24American Life whatever all those I I
  586. 23:26listen to a lot of podcasts and I
  587. 23:27thought well I'd to do it and a lithium
  588. 23:32podcast are you serious I mean I thought
  589. 23:34okay I'll do 12 nobody will listen and
  590. 23:38I'll have it out of my
  591. 23:39system and for whatever reason it was
  592. 23:42the right time to do it the industry was
  593. 23:46on an
  594. 23:47upswing and you I did them on I did
  595. 23:50episodes the first 50 episodes I did on
  596. 23:52Studios on five continents so we would
  597. 23:54you're in Shanghai we get the studio in
  598. 23:56Shanghai one there is even in like salta
  599. 23:59Argentina there's a studio you can
  600. 24:01record at um London uh Perth wow and you
  601. 24:07know it
  602. 24:08was it got
  603. 24:10traction you know and people liked it
  604. 24:14but I still I thought you know this has
  605. 24:17got a limit and it's probably I thought
  606. 24:1912 you know I'm on 191 and it's been
  607. 24:23downloaded in 180 even North Korea I got
  608. 24:25North Korea this week which it's
  609. 24:27probably the government I'm I don't
  610. 24:29think it's yeah but um it's really it
  611. 24:33that means a lot to me it it means more
  612. 24:35to me that it's Global lithium and I'm
  613. 24:39in 189 I have 195 countries I've had
  614. 24:41downloads so I that impresses me what I
  615. 24:45the number of listeners isn't that big a
  616. 24:47deal to me although I have had an
  617. 24:48episode with 100,000 over 100,000
  618. 24:51downloads um it's lithium but how did
  619. 24:54you do it yeah it's lithium that's my
  620. 24:56point exactly it's lithium how did you
  621. 24:57do this it's lithium how did you gain I
  622. 25:01knew people and I you know I'd say hey
  623. 25:03you want to be on the podcast now I I
  624. 25:04rarely have to ask people I had to ask
  625. 25:06Daniel because he's been on so many
  626. 25:08times I think maybe he's tired of it but
  627. 25:10uh sorry for context I just did a
  628. 25:13podcast with a guy who's been on seven
  629. 25:15times and um no I I just it was an
  630. 25:20experiment that worked but I don't there
  631. 25:23was no Brilliance there was no
  632. 25:25plan it just I like doing it I think it
  633. 25:29came through that I like doing it I
  634. 25:30think it came through that I was having
  635. 25:32honest
  636. 25:33conversations it it just worked are you
  637. 25:38mindful around the editorial piece is
  638. 25:40your intention to educate or is your
  639. 25:42intention to raise awareness about
  640. 25:44certain products or certain industry
  641. 25:47flows and shifts what's your intention
  642. 25:49behind that I I think it was in one of
  643. 25:52Ferris is books and and I think he
  644. 25:55talked yeah I think he talked about
  645. 25:57writing too
  646. 25:59that you should write for yourself and
  647. 26:02if it interests you it'll have an
  648. 26:04audience and and in podcast is the same
  649. 26:07way I try to have a a conversation that
  650. 26:10interests the guy I'm talking to and you
  651. 26:14know every episode's not for everybody
  652. 26:17and I and I know that but I have a very
  653. 26:20consistent I put an episode up I know
  654. 26:23how many people are listening at 5 hours
  655. 26:25at 10 hours at 24 hours because I have a
  656. 26:28global audience so it doesn't matter
  657. 26:29what time I release it I'm going to have
  658. 26:31listeners and I just think it's
  659. 26:35a it you can't overthink it and you
  660. 26:38can't over plan it and if it's if it's
  661. 26:40real there's an audience that'll
  662. 26:42gravitate to are you looking at other
  663. 26:44channels in the future outside the
  664. 26:46podcast well I mean I I write a lot so I
  665. 26:52mean I I you know honestly for me
  666. 26:55writing's more of an outlet and and I I
  667. 26:58like to write I'll put stuff on LinkedIn
  668. 27:00I put stuff on my website sometimes
  669. 27:02people send me seas and disst when I do
  670. 27:04that but a whole another podcast okay
  671. 27:07we'll stay tuned for that but um no I I
  672. 27:11don't want to do YouTube I don't I mean
  673. 27:13who who wants to look at me for an hour
  674. 27:15nobody um and it's I when I listen to a
  675. 27:20podcast I'm usually hik I'm usually
  676. 27:21doing something else working out and
  677. 27:24have my earbuds in and that's how I
  678. 27:26listen to podcast I'm I never sit down
  679. 27:29it's not like watching something on
  680. 27:30Netflix and you know when I first was
  681. 27:32doing this there was a guy in Australia
  682. 27:33putting all my recordings on YouTube wow
  683. 27:38and I said you know you might you might
  684. 27:40want to stop doing that cuz it's like
  685. 27:42there's no video I mean who's going to
  686. 27:43you know and um even this I don't like
  687. 27:47the idea of this going out into the
  688. 27:49world in video because I mean it my
  689. 27:52first 50 podcast I had a hard
  690. 27:55time I didn't edit it I had a young lady
  691. 27:57that was in college for that kind of
  692. 28:00thing did it but I couldn't even listen
  693. 28:02to my own voice really yeah so I I
  694. 28:05didn't I had to cuz I wanted to know
  695. 28:07what the product was and then Co
  696. 28:09happened I started having to do it on
  697. 28:11Zoom cuz I was doing you know people all
  698. 28:13over the world and uh I learned how to
  699. 28:17do a podcast in two YouTube videos and I
  700. 28:20downloaded software and I do all the
  701. 28:24stuff myself now except for today my
  702. 28:25buddy over here is going to send me the
  703. 28:27MP3 file but I just do it on Zoom strip
  704. 28:30off the file convert it to an MP3 and
  705. 28:32put it in audacity and I you know you
  706. 28:34can you can see what an um looks like in
  707. 28:36a waveform I mean you just you don't
  708. 28:37even really have to listen to to get the
  709. 28:39ooms and the AZ out so but that didn't
  710. 28:42take that literally took less than two
  711. 28:44hours of my time to be able to do that
  712. 28:46but this from the same person who said
  713. 28:48I'm going to learn the language I'm
  714. 28:50going to hire a teacher to teach me
  715. 28:51about the language Japanese language and
  716. 28:54culture so this is I'm seeing
  717. 28:55consistency here learning learning
  718. 28:57learning whether whether it's a language
  719. 28:58or whether it's how to create a podcast
  720. 29:00is that do you agree with that yeah I
  721. 29:02well I think so too and I think the
  722. 29:03older you get the more it's important to
  723. 29:06to continue that keeps your brain
  724. 29:09working you know first thing I do in the
  725. 29:12morning is do Japanese on Dual linga wow
  726. 29:15just to stay cuz I'm not over there that
  727. 29:18much so yeah well I hear that the best
  728. 29:21Learners are also the best teachers and
  729. 29:23so I speak for all the podcasters out
  730. 29:25there this is like being at Socrates
  731. 29:27feet to really just take all this in so
  732. 29:29this is this is great let's not let's
  733. 29:31not
  734. 29:32go of the podcasting world this is
  735. 29:35fantastic so when you talk about knowing
  736. 29:38people understanding their motivations
  737. 29:40very important love investing in your
  738. 29:42manager people come and leave jobs
  739. 29:45because not of the company many times
  740. 29:47but because of the manager and having
  741. 29:49the customer to see you as the company
  742. 29:51they're not doing business with a huge
  743. 29:53organization they're doing business with
  744. 29:54you they're doing business with Joe and
  745. 29:57also just just a fun fact we've been
  746. 29:59asking people about fun facts and I want
  747. 30:01to see if this one is true about you
