  9. 0:21one million dollars
  10. 0:23ryan lochte offered two very poor and
  11. 0:27ineffective apologies and they cost him
  12. 0:30one million dollars
  13. 0:32ryan lochte lost four major sponsorship
  14. 0:35deals worth one million dollars
  15. 0:38in the beginning ryan lochte claimed
  16. 0:39that he and his teammates had been held
  17. 0:41up that a gun had been pointed to his
  18. 0:44head and that he'd been a hero because
  19. 0:45he stood up to the gunman while his
  20. 0:46teammates he claimed lay down
  21. 0:50then he claimed that he and his
  22. 0:51teammates were victims that they had to
  23. 0:52give up cash
  24. 0:54and yet that's not the real problem as
  25. 0:57the truth started to unfold ryan lochte
  26. 1:00offered two apologies
  27. 1:02and both apologies were very ineffective
  28. 1:06in fact he said i regret my behavior i
  29. 1:08regret not being more candid in the way
  30. 1:10that i expressed my story in my
  31. 1:12communication
  32. 1:13and yet that's not the same as saying
  33. 1:16hey i lied
  34. 1:18we weren't just held up at gunpoint we
  35. 1:21actually vandalized a gas station and we
  36. 1:23urinated on the premises and we were
  37. 1:25intoxicated that would be the truth
  38. 1:28however there was a lot more missing in
  39. 1:31the apology that ryan lochte offered to
  40. 1:33the media and the public
  41. 1:36there are seven key points seven key
  42. 1:39elements seven key steps to a real
  43. 1:41effective sincere and heartfelt apology
  44. 1:45number one admit your mistake state the
  45. 1:48fact state what actually happened
  46. 1:51number two
  47. 1:53express remorse say i'm sorry i regret
  48. 1:56what i what what i did what happened
  49. 1:59number three acknowledge the impact
  50. 2:01acknowledge the consequences of your
  51. 2:03action acknowledge the impact that it
  52. 2:06had on the people around you the people
  53. 2:07that you wronged
  54. 2:10number four explain why don't justify
  55. 2:13don't try and excuse your behavior
  56. 2:15simply state what happened
  57. 2:18in ryan lochte's case we were drunk we
  58. 2:20were intoxicated we were selfish we were
  59. 2:22thinking about instant gratification

  61. 2:26representing our country properly

  76. 3:02really important this is the part where
  77. 3:03you ask for forgiveness
  78. 3:06where you say i know what i did was
  79. 3:08wrong i know how it affected you i'm
  80. 3:10asking for forgiveness how can i make it
  81. 3:12up to you and ryan lochte could have
  82. 3:14made it up to the public he could have
  83. 3:15offered to do community service to do
  84. 3:17volunteer work to do some sort of
  85. 3:19charity work not throw money away not
  86. 3:21say i'm going to go to rehab no rather
  87. 3:24say i'm willing to make up for it
  88. 3:27i'm willing to give my time my sweat my
  89. 3:30labor i'm willing to humble myself
  90. 3:33and you see that's the key point an
  91. 3:35apology can't be truly effective and
  92. 3:38sincere until you're willing to let go
  93. 3:40of your pride let go of your ego and be
  94. 3:42humble to admit that you're wrong we're
  95. 3:44all human beings we all make mistakes
  96. 3:47we're all imperfect that part's okay
  97. 3:50it's how we react to the mistakes we
  98. 3:51make it's how we react to the wrong
  99. 3:54doing that makes the difference
  100. 3:57ryan lochte didn't react properly to all
  101. 4:00the mistakes he made to all the
  102. 4:02wrongdoing
  103. 4:03he didn't offer a real apology and it
  104. 4:05cost him one million dollars
