- 0:03and now another update on the real
- 0:05robbery Scandal us swimmer Ryan locky is
- 0:08saying he's sorry in a statement posted
- 0:10on his social media accounts he says
- 0:12quote I want to apologize for my
- 0:14behavior last weekend for not being more
- 0:17careful and candid in how I described
- 0:19the events of of that early morning and
- 0:22for my role in taking the focus away
- 0:24from the many athletes fulfilling their
- 0:26dreams of participating in the Olympics
- 0:29on the phone with me now from Rio is Ben
- 0:31Tracy he's been following this story
- 0:34what more can you tell us
- 0:35Ben well it seems to be a very carefully
- 0:38crafted statement and uh that's not a
- 0:40surprise because we know Ryan locky has
- 0:42now hired a very high-profile crisis
- 0:44communication firm uh to help him
- 0:47through this particular moment in time
- 0:49for uh for him with fall out of this
- 0:52it's interesting what he does not say he
- 0:54doesn't admit to LY he uses phrases like
- 0:56I should have been more careful in how I
- 0:57described what happened he doesn't admit
- 1:00actually doing anything at the gas
- 1:02station he just says I should have been
- 1:03more responsible and he then you know
- 1:06even still flips it around and talks
- 1:08about it's traumatic to be out late at
- 1:10night with uh your friends in a foreign
- 1:12country and somebody pulls a gun on you
- 1:14and demands money so there seems to be a
- 1:17part of this where he's trying to have
- 1:18it both ways where there's a little bit
- 1:19of okay I acknowledge I did something
- 1:21wrong here but also my version of the
- 1:24story is still largely intact yeah I
- 1:26found that to be actually the most
- 1:28interesting uh portion of this apology
- 1:32that the disputed Point whether or not a
- 1:36gun was pointed at him he's still
- 1:38sticking to and he's still sticking to
- 1:41the idea that money was demanded of him
- 1:44um you know you use the word demand so
- 1:46you know there's a ceron involved it
- 1:49wasn't sort of
- 1:51voluntary exactly I mean we do know
- 1:53since the press conference yesterday
- 1:55with the police we do know that a gun
- 1:57was pointed at him in some fashion at
- 1:59this security guard who was there who
- 2:01was trying to get them to stay after
- 2:03they had caused this damage for the
- 2:05police to come did at one point point a
- 2:07gun and the police said that that was
- 2:09because Ryan lcky was aggressive and
- 2:11erratic and drunk um now whether or not
- 2:14that person demanded money at gunpoint
- 2:17seems to be in debate uh the police
- 2:19actually say that it was the swimmers
- 2:21themselves who offered up money to pay
- 2:23for the damage and then took off um so
- 2:27whether or not they were entering their
- 2:28pockets with a gun in their face think
- 2:30is a very different version of the r
- 2:31that it seems only Ryan ly is is
- 2:34reporting yeah and he certainly
- 2:36indicates in the statement that um which
- 2:38we haven't that that portion I didn't
- 2:40read but he indicates in the statement
- 2:41that he was holding his tongue
- 2:43essentially until the legal situation
- 2:45had been cleared up uh which suggests
- 2:47that there will be no further legal
- 2:49ramifications but at least one of his
- 2:51teammates could not leave uh the country
- 2:53without paying
- 2:54up exactly Jimmy Fegan is still here in
- 2:58Rio and what we've learned this warning
- 3:00his attorney says that they cut a deal
- 3:02with uh the authorities here in Rio that
- 3:04he'll pay the equivalent of about $1,000
- 3:07us uh in a fine and those fines
- 3:10typically go to charity in cases like
- 3:12this that will give him his passport
- 3:14back and we all expect him to be on a
- 3:16flight tonight from Rio back to the
- 3:18United States now I don't know if you if
- 3:19you could even know this but he was the
- 3:22only swimmer that was asked to pay a
- 3:24fine the other two weren't they're back
- 3:26in the US do you know why that is yeah
- 3:28it was interesting you know the police
- 3:30made a point of saying that the other
- 3:32two swimmers that they you know took off
- 3:34those flights the other night who were
- 3:35trying to fly back they said they only
- 3:37wanted them as witnesses that they don't
- 3:40believe that the two of them lied about
- 3:41what happened so I I think the way that
- 3:44this went down was that you had
- 3:45statements from Ryan mocky you had
- 3:47statements from Jimmy Sean that the
- 3:49police were given that they have now
- 3:51proven to be false these other two
- 3:53swimmers had not done that and so what
- 3:56they basically wanted was the other two
- 3:57swimmers to come back to corroborate the
- 3:59story that police have now put out there
- 4:01and they say they have we have not heard
- 4:03that directly from those two swimmers
- 4:05but the police say that the other two
- 4:08did say that the version of event that
- 4:09the police put out yesterday is the true
- 4:12one not the version that Ryan Monte gave
- 4:14all right Ben Tracy thanks a lot for the
- 4:16update thank you
