  1. 0:00hello Grim marians hello Rosie hi David
  2. 0:02how are you good how are you good today
  3. 0:04we are going to talk about run-ons and
  4. 0:07comma
  5. 0:08spces so a run-on sentence is what
  6. 0:11happens when two independent clauses are
  7. 0:14put together in one sentence without any
  8. 0:16punctuation or coordinating conjunctions
  9. 0:19like and but and or so Rosie what is a
  10. 0:22good example of a a runon
  11. 0:26sentence we bought Nails we bought a
  12. 0:28hammer yeah so we can see that this
  13. 0:31sentence contains two um two individual
  14. 0:36independent clauses so we've got number
  15. 0:38one we bought Nails Number Two we bought
  16. 0:41a hammer now there are a couple of
  17. 0:42different ways we could make this a
  18. 0:44legal sentence but right now as it
  19. 0:45stands this is a runon right so there
  20. 0:48are a couple ways we could fix this
  21. 0:49sentence um one way would be just to add
  22. 0:52a semicolon in there sem so you've got
  23. 0:55two independent clauses we bought Nails
  24. 0:57semicolon we bought a hammer right
  25. 1:00another way you could do that would be
  26. 1:02to just add a comma and then the
  27. 1:04conjunction and so you're connecting
  28. 1:07those two Clauses so this is this is a
  29. 1:09run-on sentence without this and and
  30. 1:11this comma and it's called that because
  31. 1:14it's sort of like a runaway train right
  32. 1:16you know it doesn't have enough stoppage
  33. 1:19in it that's how I would put it so
  34. 1:21that's what a run-on sentence is and now
  35. 1:23I want to talk about comma splicing and
  36. 1:26the word splice not a super common term
  37. 1:29if if you are neither a sailor or a film
  38. 1:32editor um but splicing is a word that
  39. 1:35originally meant to take two ropes
  40. 1:38untangle them and weave them back
  41. 1:40together it's a sailor's term related to
  42. 1:42rope lines in our case for grammar uh a
  43. 1:46splice a comma splice is an
  44. 1:48inappropriate joining of two independent
  45. 1:51clauses by using a comma so
  46. 2:02so Rosie this is Lil Tony crime fighting
  47. 2:05Pony right so for example in this
  48. 2:07sentence I Love Lil Tony 2 Pony up to
  49. 2:10the streets it's my favorite movie in
  50. 2:12the Lil Tony franchise very fine series
  51. 2:15of non-existent films the problem with
  52. 2:17this sentence uh is that right now it's
  53. 2:20got this comma in the middle of it uh
  54. 2:23and this comma inappropriately joins
  55. 2:26these two independent clauses oh and
  56. 2:29this whole
  57. 2:31time I forgot to say two independent
  58. 2:35clauses inappropriately joined by a
  59. 2:37comma So Okay so we've got independent
  60. 2:39clause number one remember this thing
  61. 2:40could stand on its own as a sentence I
  62. 2:43love the name of this movie I Love Lil
  63. 2:45tony2 Pony up to the streets that could
  64. 2:47be its own sentence on its own end it
  65. 2:48with a period period it's my favorite
  66. 2:50movie in the little Tony franchise
  67. 2:52period but we have these two independent
  68. 2:55clauses right um we cannot join them
  69. 2:58with just a comma we could say I love
  70. 3:01Lil Tony 2 Pony up to the streets comma
  71. 3:04and it's my favorite movie in the L Tony
  72. 3:06franchise or as we did in the previous
  73. 3:09uh example we could also throw in a
  74. 3:11semicolon which is I think what I would
  75. 3:13rather do I Love Lil Tony too Pony up to
  76. 3:15the streets semicon it's my favorite
  77. 3:17movie in the Lil Tony franchise and
  78. 3:19Rosie you will notice that I have
  79. 3:20underlined these uh these titles oh yes
  80. 3:24because these are the names of published
  81. 3:25works right even though we made them up
  82. 3:28exactly but okay but for real I would
  83. 3:30love to see like a little Tony crime
  84. 3:32fighting Pony series so to review um
  85. 3:37when you're looking at a runon you're
  86. 3:38looking at two independent clauses that
  87. 3:40are together in one sentence that are
  88. 3:42joined inappropriately without
  89. 3:44punctuation or conjunctions uh so we
  90. 3:47bought Nails we bought a hammer there's
  91. 3:49there's not really a place to know where
  92. 3:52the division between Clauses is in that
  93. 3:57uh and so the thing to do is to either
  94. 3:58is to add some kind of is to add a comma
  95. 4:01uh and some and a
  96. 4:03conjunction or to combine them using a
  97. 4:06semicolon uh the same deal with a commas
  98. 4:08splice it's just that a comma splice is
  99. 4:11a runon that hasn't been fixed all the
  100. 4:13way right the Comm is being used but we
  101. 4:16need some bigger
  102. 4:18punctuation in place of the comma
  103. 4:20something like a
  104. 4:21semicolon uh in order to make a
  105. 4:24distinction between those two
  106. 4:26independent clauses so that is how you
  107. 4:28identify and fix run-ons and comma
  108. 4:30splices you can learn anything David out
  109. 4:33Rosie out
