- 0:04our subject readings in Philippine
- 0:07history we are still in our chapter two
- 0:09which is all about the content and
- 0:12contextual analysis of selected primary
- 0:15sources in the Philippine history
- 0:19so our topic for today will be the uh
- 0:24last discussion under chapter two this
- 0:28will be the uh last primary source that
- 0:33we are going to identify or examine its
- 0:36context and as well as context so again
- 0:41this will be the last primary source
- 0:43that we need to examine it's content and
- 0:46its context for us to know deeply what
- 0:50happened in this uh certain events and
- 0:53we had our first primary source which is
- 0:57all about the uh a brief summary of the
- 1:01first voyage around the world by maalan
- 1:03by Antonio Pega
- 1:05fetta the second primary
- 1:08source was the KKK and the caran and
- 1:11Katipunan thirdd is the readings uh I
- 1:14mean reading the proclamation of the
- 1:16Philippine
- 1:17Independence and our previous discussion
- 1:20was all about a glance at the selected
- 1:23uh uh Philippine political caricature in
- 1:27Alfred McCoy's Philippine cartoon
- 1:30or the political caricature of the
- 1:32American era from 1900s to 1941 and now
- 1:38this will be the last primary source
- 1:41which is all about the
- 1:43revisiting corazona Kino speech before
- 1:47US Congress so in this topic we are
- 1:50going
- 1:51to uh know and witness the corinos
- 1:55speech and we can take cues not just on
- 1:59Cory his uh individual ideas and
- 2:02aspiration but also the guiding
- 2:06principles and framework of the
- 2:08government that she represented but
- 2:11first let's take a look in the
- 2:13background of Corazon aino so Maria
- 2:17Corazon Cory sumulong quango aino mon
- 2:22complete name was born on January 25
- 2:271933 in paniki Tarlac
- 2:30she was born to The
- 2:33prominent prominent quango family if we
- 2:36say
- 2:37prominent important or or a famous
- 2:41family and she served as the 11 take
- 2:44note 11th President of the Philippines
- 2:48no and take note that uh she served as
- 2:51the 11th President of the Philippines
- 2:54from February 25
- 2:561986 until June 303
- 3:011992 another is that uh died on August 1
- 3:062009 at Ma Medical Center at the age of
- 3:1176 and she graduated at Far Eastern
- 3:15University after graduating from
- 3:18college uh Corey aino studied law at Far
- 3:22Eastern University in
- 3:261953 okay next
- 3:30Corino she was a Filipino politician who
- 3:33served as the 11th President of the
- 3:35Philippines and the first woman to hold
- 3:38that office again first woman to hold
- 3:41that office and she was the first
- 3:45democratically elected president no
- 3:48again first to
- 3:51highlight democratically elected
- 3:54president and first famale president in
- 4:00Asia and if I'm not mistaken kakino was
- 4:03indeed the first famale president not
- 4:07only in Asia but also in the entire
- 4:11world next she was the most prominent
- 4:15figure of the 1986 People Power
- 4:17Revolution because uh Corey aino became
- 4:21a prominent figure a Philippine history
- 4:25for her role in The People Power
- 4:27Revolution in 19 86 which uh she led the
- 4:33out
- 4:35orwa or mahawa president Marcos and
- 4:41restore
- 4:43democ and 11th president s
- 4:48Philippines Mark as a significant moment
- 4:51in the Philippine history and pave the
- 4:55way for another famale leaders in as IIA
- 5:00and around the world and also she was
- 5:04named in a Time magazines as a woman of
- 5:07the year in 1986 prior of this she had
- 5:11not held any other elective office
- 5:15B prior experience in elective office or
- 5:19in
- 5:21politics leadership during at critical
- 5:24period Philippine history she earned
- 5:29respect
- 5:30both domestically and
- 5:33internationally
- 5:34and uh
- 5:36presidency uh paved the way for the
- 5:40Philippines to regain its Democratic and
- 5:44para inspired and Oban women in politics
- 5:51globally next is that she was married
- 5:55to senator benno aino againa married to
- 6:00Senator benino aino Jr the Stan chest
- 6:04critic of the president Marcos yes
- 6:10correcty Corino was married
- 6:15oror benno
- 6:17aino
- 6:20Pro prominent no prominent opposition
- 6:25figure in the stound chest stound
- 6:30critique of President
- 6:32Ferdinand Marcos Nino
- 6:35aino no nino aino was a former Senator
- 6:40and had been a vocal critic of Marcos
- 6:48especially authoritarian Rule and
- 6:52Corruption during the terms of Marcos
- 6:57and she Cor aino emerged as a leader of
- 7:00the opposition after he uh her husband
- 7:03assassinated on August 21 1983 upon
- 7:07roring to the Philippines from Exile in
- 7:09the United States so see Cory aino
- 7:13central figure in this in the call for
- 7:16Democratic reforms and uh standing
- 7:20against the authoritarian rule of
- 7:22President Ferdinand
- 7:24Marcos Emer
- 7:27emergence as in leader was fluid no by
- 7:33the uh tragic event of her husband's
- 7:38assassination and the desire for
- 7:40political change sa philipinas
- 7:45so speechy but before proceed
- 7:51speech ill and death of Cory aino so on
- 7:56March
- 7:5724 2008 aino family announced that the
- 8:00former president had diagnosed with
- 8:03colal
- 8:04cancer upon her being earlier informed
- 8:08by her doctors that she had only three
- 8:11months to leave so she pursued medical
- 8:15treatment and
- 8:17chemotherapy so uh kakino the former
- 8:20president of the Philippines was
- 8:22diagnosed with colal cancer so colal
- 8:27cancer disase in which cells in the
- 8:31colon or rectum grow out of control so
- 8:35she was uh diagnosed with this type of
- 8:37cancer in March
- 8:4024 uh 2008 despite undergoing
- 8:45treatment undergoing treatment including
- 8:49uh surgery and chemotherapy medical
- 8:52treatment and chemotherapy Corey aino
- 8:55pass away on August take note passed
- 8:59away on August s
- 9:02August August okay namat on
- 9:09August 1
- 9:13year9 okay her battle with uh coloral
- 9:18tenser brought attention to the
- 9:21importance of early detection and
- 9:24treatment of the disease so a series of
- 9:28healing for aino were held throughout
- 9:32the country intended for her recovery
- 9:34because Cory aino known Woulda as
- 9:37devoted in Catholic faith and her
- 9:39illness uh garnered
- 9:42widespread public concern and sympathy
- 9:45and also during put time Catholic Church
- 9:48being a significant institution in the
- 9:50Philippines played a central role in
- 9:53providing both uh spiritual and
- 9:55emotional Comfort to the nation during
- 9:58challenging time times such as the
- 10:00health struggles of the prominent
- 10:04figur Corey
- 10:07aino in a public uh statement during one
- 10:10healing mass on May 13 2008 Corey aino
- 10:13said that her blood test indicated that
- 10:15she was responding well no responding
- 10:17well to treatment her hair and appetite
- 10:21lost were apparent so during s healing
- 10:25on May 13
- 10:27208 uh 20
- 10:30so statement about health condition in
- 10:34that
- 10:35statement blood test uh indicated
- 10:38positive progress in response cancer
- 10:41treatment that she was undergoing
- 10:44however the
- 10:45acknowledge some visible effects
- 10:49treatment such as hair loss and lost of
- 10:53appetite
- 10:55no and Maria coron Cory sumulong kakino
- 10:59function as the symbol of the
- 11:01restoration again take note symbol of
- 11:04restoration of democracy and the
- 11:07overthrow of the Marcos dictatorship in
- 11:101986 yes that's correct that Corey
- 11:13played a crucial role in the restoration
- 11:16of democracy in the Philippines she
- 11:18became a symbol of People Power
- 11:21Revolution year 1986 which uh led to the
- 11:26overthrow of the long uh stand
- 11:30authoritarian regime of President
- 11:33Ferdinand
- 11:41Marcos next here is this one
- 11:46so uh the EDSA People Power Revolution
- 11:49which installed Corey aino in the
- 11:51presidency put the Philippines in the
- 11:53international Spotlight for overthrowing
- 11:56a dictator through peaceful means so the
- 11:58the is a People Power Revolution in 198
- 12:02uh6 bro uh International Spotlight now
- 12:06attention to the Philippines
- 12:08and event took place along the
- 12:13EPO de los Santos Avenue or EDSA Mai
- 12:19major highway in Metro Manila and this
- 12:22event P was last lasted from February 22
- 12:26to 25 1986 lastly
- 12:31People Power Revolution was often cited
- 12:34no was often cited as an inspiration for
- 12:38another movement advocating for
- 12:42democracy and human rights around the
- 12:45world and Cory was easily a figure of
- 12:49the said Revolution as the Widow of the
- 12:52slain maros oppositionist and former
- 12:55Senator Beno noinoi aino Jr therefore
- 12:59cor
- 13:00aino corino's role in uh role Nia Eda
- 13:06People Power Revolution was deeply
- 13:08connected personal history and the
- 13:12tragic events surrounding the
- 13:15assassination
- 13:17husband Senator Beno Nino aino Jr in
- 13:221983 next Corey was hoisted as the
- 13:26antithesis of the Ator no anti thisis of
- 13:30dictator indeed that candidacy Corey and
- 13:33her subsequent uh presidency symbolize a
- 13:37break from the oppressive rule of U
- 13:41Marcos and that's why Corey was hoisted
- 13:44no Corey was hoisted as the
- 13:47antithesis of the dictator which was
- 13:51Marcos next is theod her image is a
- 13:55morning widowed uh housewife who had
- 13:58always been in the the shadow of her
- 13:59husband and relatives and had no
- 14:01experience take note had no experience
- 14:04in politics was just oppose against
- 14:06marus statement stat menhip eloquence
- 14:11Charisma and cunning political skills C
- 14:14Corey was uh portrayed as a grieving
- 14:20Widow limited political experiences and
- 14:24this was cons uh this uh yes this was
- 14:27con contract Ed sharply Kang Marcos who
- 14:31was depicted as a very skilled and very
- 14:35charismatic statement which political
- 14:38abilities
- 14:40or in terms politics so neverless P Cory
- 14:46was able to capture the imagination of
- 14:50the people whose rights and freedom had
- 14:52long been compromised throughout the
- 14:55Marcos regim so indeed that corzan aino
- 14:59was able to capture the imagination of
- 15:03the Filipino people who had suffered
- 15:05years of political repression human
- 15:08rights uh violation of Human Rights
- 15:11corruption and Marcus regim and her
- 15:14personal story as the graving Widow of
- 15:18uh Senator benno added a powerful and
- 15:22emotional Dimension to her candidacy and
- 15:26Cory aino became a symbol of resilience
- 15:30hope and fight for the country's uh
- 15:34democracy this is despite that the fact
- 15:37that Corey came from a Hender family in
- 15:39Tarlac and owned vast state of sugar
- 15:42Plantation and H relative occupy local
- 15:45local and national government position
- 15:49so it's true that c Cory aino came from
- 15:52a prominent and a wealthy political
- 15:54family in Tarlac no so um
- 15:59uh I mean her family the Quang of family
- 16:01no had had a uh history of involvement
- 16:06in both local and national government
- 16:09positions or politics so what happened
- 16:12in the People Power Revolution of 1986
- 16:15so let's see some happenings during the
- 16:17People Power Revolution of
- 16:201986 so the People Power Revolution of
- 16:241986 was widely recognized no widely
- 16:28think not how widely recognized around
- 16:30the world for its
- 16:33peaceful character or peaceful
- 16:37Revolution and the People Power
- 16:39Revolution of 1986 the
- 16:42Philippines it gained
- 16:45or Global recognition for its peaceful
- 16:48and nonviolent
- 16:51Revolution
- 16:54Filipinos NE gathered
- 16:57alonga protest against the authoritarian
- 17:01rule of President ferdinan Marcos so
- 17:05when former Senator Nino aino was shoot
- 17:08at the
- 17:10tarmac of the Manila International
- 17:13Airport August 21
- 17:151983 the Marcus regim greatly suffered a
- 17:19crisis of legitimacy no because the
- 17:22protest from different sectors
- 17:24frequented different areas in the
- 17:27country and on August 21 19 uh 83 no
- 17:31former um Senator Beno Nino aino Jr he
- 17:36was ass assassinated at the tarmak of
- 17:38Manila International Airport so the
- 17:41implication is that this event
- 17:44significantly uh damaged the legitimacy
- 17:46of Marcus region so the crisis of
- 17:49legitimacy K crisis of legitimacy
- 17:52suggest that government
- 17:55face severe lose of public trust and
- 17:59credibility due to controversial
- 18:02circumstances
- 18:04surrounding aino and
- 18:09also students religious groups Business
- 18:13Leaders to every day citizen organize
- 18:17and participate in the revolution and
- 18:20this protest where a manifestation of
- 18:23the widespread dis
- 18:25dissatisfaction Sam Marcos government
- 18:28questioning its credibility and
- 18:30governance and Mark a torning point in
- 18:34Philippine political history eventually
- 18:37contributing to the People Power
- 18:40Revolution so Marcus credibility in the
- 18:43International Community also suffered
- 18:46paired with a looming economic crisis
- 18:48Marcus had to do something to prove to
- 18:50his allies in the United State that he
- 18:53remained to be a
- 18:54democratically anointed uh leader of the
- 18:57country so the assassination of Nino
- 19:00aino not only sparked domestic Perle but
- 19:04also nakad damage
- 19:07president H Ferdinand Marcos on the
- 19:10international stage no Nala or down
- 19:15credibil Marcos and an uh impending
- 19:21economic crisis threatened by the
- 19:24stability s Philippines and in response
- 19:29challenges no and to reassure his
- 19:33allies in the United States s Marcos was
- 19:36compelled to take actions to demonstrate
- 19:40that he's still the legitimate
- 19:43Democratic leader of the country which
- 19:45is Philippines so Marcos called for a
- 19:49snap election in February 1986 where
- 19:53Cory aino the Widow of slain Senator was
- 19:57convinced to run no Cory aino was
- 20:01convinced to run against Marcus so snap
- 20:05election so if we say snap election is
- 20:08an election called earlier than expected
- 20:13or scheduled so in an attempt to
- 20:16stabilize his regim and prove his
- 20:20Democratic legitimacy himself Marcos
- 20:23both domestically and
- 20:26internationally Ferdinand Marcos
- 20:28nag snap election in
- 20:31February
- 20:331896 and Cory the Widow assassinated
- 20:37Senator Nino aino was persuaded to run
- 20:41against Marcos in this
- 20:44election so the canvasing was riged to
- 20:48maros favor but the people expressed
- 20:50their protest uh people expressed their
- 20:54protest against the corrupt and
- 20:56authoritarian government because during
- 20:59the snap election in February 1986 in
- 21:02the Philippines allegations of
- 21:05widespread El uh El uh
- 21:09electoral electoral fraud and
- 21:12manipulation emerg with a canvassing of
- 21:15votes no conving of votes heavily
- 21:18criticized for being rigged in favor of
- 21:23Marcos leading military officials of the
- 21:26region and martial law orchestrators
- 21:29themselves Juan p eni and Fidel V Ramos
- 21:34plotted to take over the presidency
- 21:36until civilians heed the call of the
- 21:39Manila Arch Bishop haime cardinal sin no
- 21:43and other civilian leaders gathered in
- 21:46in
- 21:47EDSA and that's correct because during
- 21:50the EDSA People Power Revolution in
- 21:521986 Juan Pon enre was the minister they
- 21:57cannot have minister of defense and
- 21:59cidel Ramos uh the vice Chief of Staff
- 22:04of the Armed
- 22:05Forces so
- 22:07this military official in Rel and Ramos
- 22:11both of them had been associated with
- 22:14the Marcus regim and the implementation
- 22:17of Martial law and initially plotted to
- 22:20take over the presidency of Ferdinand
- 22:22Marcos however plans to talk an
- 22:27unexpected turnor when
- 22:30Cardinal AR Bishop of Manila is call to
- 22:34the public to support the the rebel
- 22:37military leaders in response to this
- 22:41call along with the urging of the other
- 22:45civilian leaders masses of ordinary
- 22:48Filipinos gathered at EDSA torning the
- 22:51military rebellions into a people's
- 22:54movement shot next is the overwhelming
- 22:59presence of civilians in tsas
- 23:01successfully torn EOP into a civilian
- 23:05demonstration the thousands of people
- 23:07who gathered over through Ferdinand
- 23:10Marcos from the presidency after
- 23:1321 years indeed the overwhelming
- 23:17presence of civilians in EDSA during uh
- 23:20People Power Revolution in 1986 played a
- 23:24decisive role in torning what initial
- 23:28began as a military cou into a massive
- 23:32and peaceful civilian uh demonstration
- 23:35so the collective action of thousands if
- 23:38not millions of Filipinos from lahi or
- 23:42various walks of lifea along EDSA
- 23:47creating a human barricade against any
- 23:50violent
- 23:52escalation and uh this peaceful assembly
- 23:56fueled by by the uh determination of
- 24:00ordinary citizens and the withdrawal of
- 24:03support from K military and political
- 24:06figures effectively led to the
- 24:10overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos from the
- 24:15presidency after his 21y year rule
- 24:21so that's what happened in the People
- 24:24Power Revolution of
- 24:261986
- 24:28so this is
- 24:30a a picture of the new president no
- 24:34Corazon aino takes uh her off as a
- 24:38president marking the culmination of the
- 24:404 day People Power Revolution in
- 24:441986 so next picture this is the 4-day
- 24:49event from February 22 to 25 will
- 24:52forever be Etch in history as the
- 24:55bloodless Revolution which uh culminated
- 24:59with the end of a dictatorship that was
- 25:02also marked by a human rights
- 25:06violation
- 25:09so during the People Power
- 25:12Revolution and Cory aino together with
- 25:17uh this Filipino people say Revolution
- 25:20so a thousand of Filipino
- 25:23Filipinos took to the streets and
- 25:26clamored for freedom from the two deade
- 25:31Iron Fist rule of then president
- 25:35Ferdinand Marcos
- 25:38banana and this is Ferdinand Marcos uh
- 25:41final speech after his inauguration and
- 25:44before his flight to Hawaii and
- 25:48Ferdinand Marcos held on the presidency
- 25:51from 1965 until the apprising forced him
- 25:54and his family to leave the country in
- 25:561986 after the People Power Revolution
- 26:00uh his to DED rule saw the imposition of
- 26:04Martial law and various human rights
- 26:07abuses especially against those he deem
- 26:09critical of the
- 26:10government and the Marcus family here
- 26:14the Marcus family moments after taking
- 26:17his oth of office in ceremonies in
- 26:19February 25 1986 so
- 26:22NAA Marcos and the Marcos uh the
- 26:26children of Marcos SI bong bong iy and
- 26:31Irene part and now let's see and witness
- 26:34the content of the speech of President
- 26:36coron
- 26:38aino this is a speech to a joint session
- 26:41of the US Congress delivered 18th of
- 26:44September 1986 Washington District of
- 26:48Colombia so on 18th of September 1986 7
- 26:53months since Corey became president she
- 26:56went to the United State and spoke
- 26:57before the joint session of the US
- 26:59Congress Corey was welcomed with a long
- 27:02Applause as she talked to the podium and
- 27:05address the United State about her
- 27:08presidency and the challenges faced by
- 27:10the new Republic so approximately seven
- 27:14months into her presidency Corey aino
- 27:17traveled to uh United States during her
- 27:20visit she addressed a joint
- 27:23session of the United State Congress no
- 27:26the speech was a significant moment in
- 27:29the Philippine American relation and an
- 27:31opportunity for president aino to share
- 27:35uham vision for the Philippines update
- 27:38the US government and the development in
- 27:41her uh Administration and of course seek
- 27:44support for the country's political and
- 27:47economic stability and aino speech uh
- 27:51emphasize democratic values and the
- 27:53commitment to rebuilding the Philippines
- 27:56after the disruptive years under
- 27:58Demarcus regim so she began Her speech
- 28:03with a story of her leaving the United
- 28:05State three years prior as as newly
- 28:08elected wife of noinoi
- 28:10aino and she then told that uh and she
- 28:16then told of noinoi Nino's
- 28:20character convection and resol and
- 28:23opposing authoritarianism of Marcos she
- 28:26talk of the three times that they lost
- 28:29no she talk she talked three times that
- 28:33they lost n noi
- 28:35including on Aug uh 23 the first time
- 28:40was
- 28:42when uh the dictatorship detained dinoy
- 28:45with other denters denter oppose in
- 28:49politics or oppose law in relation to
- 28:53the politics so Cory related so
- 28:58with this statement No the government
- 29:01treated um him very badly putting uh
- 29:07Nino aino in a small and stuffy cell
- 29:12earless ha in a Mil in a military camp
- 29:17and threatening to harm him despite this
- 29:20Nino stayed for p days 43 days they
- 29:26didn't tell his family where he was and
- 29:30making feel them like they had lost inoi
- 29:34so
- 29:38family so this was the first Detention
- 29:42of noo aino next
- 29:46Cory
- 29:49part I know you know how to read Nam so
- 29:53Cory explain that after surviving the
- 29:57first uh detention face serious charges
- 30:01like subversion murder and other crimes
- 30:06so he was Tried by a military court but
- 30:10noo strongly doubted it's fairness
- 30:14noo fairness in protest um he went on
- 30:20Hunger Strike refusing to eat for 40
- 30:22days no fasting for 40 days to empath is
- 30:27objected objection to the proceedings
- 30:31and Cory treated this event as the
- 30:33second time that they that their family
- 30:37lost noo so
- 30:40again face SES sub uh sub verion monish
- 30:46uh attempting to undermine the
- 30:49government and M and other crimes next
- 30:54and Corey
- 30:56said is summarized that uh n no faced
- 31:00charges like submersion and murder
- 31:02leading to a military commission trial
- 31:04no leading to a military uh commission
- 31:08trial so in response G challenge si uh n
- 31:13no challenge noi with the authority of
- 31:16the commission and went on a fasting s
- 31:19viewing
- 31:20survival as a sign
- 31:23from God no intended him for another Fai
- 31:27despite the government's effort to keep
- 31:29him alive after his brain was affected H
- 31:34Nino ended his fast on a 40th Day so his
- 31:39determination to see the fast through
- 31:42demonstrated his unwavering commitment
- 31:45to his cause and that's the second when
- 31:48they lost Ino so Nino's death was the
- 31:53third and the last time again Nino's
- 31:56death was the third third and the last
- 31:58time that Cory and their children
- 32:00children lost Eno so she continued so
- 32:05through this passage no Cory aino losing
- 32:11someone was in a painful
- 32:15way political circumstances so the new
- 32:19came to us in
- 32:21Boston it had to be after the three
- 32:25happiest of our lives together though
- 32:29according
- 32:31uh Cory so
- 32:42per and the courage and Faith by which
- 32:46alone they could be free again
- 32:51so no as uh
- 32:56nothing
- 33:01nothing dictator
- 33:04Marcos uh 2
- 33:07million people
- 33:10no aside
- 33:14positivity positivity and fear or t to
- 33:21actively
- 33:24attendo and this signifies if powerful
- 33:27Collective
- 33:29action brave soul
- 33:34enough
- 33:35cementerio and Corey attributed the
- 33:38peaceful itsa Revolution to the
- 33:40martyrdom of nooi she stated that the
- 33:43death of nooi sparked the Revolution and
- 33:46the responsibility of offering the
- 33:49Democratic
- 33:50alternative and had fallen on her
- 33:53shoulders so Cory's address introduced
- 33:56as to her Democratic philosophy which
- 33:58she claimed she also acquired from
- 34:01noinoi so Cory credited the peaceful Ida
- 34:05Revolution to noo martyrdom
- 34:08stating noo was ignited
- 34:12Uprising and inspiring them to raise up
- 34:17no in demand for change and democracy
- 34:21she expressed no also s cor Express a
- 34:24sense of responsibility
- 34:27to uh provide a democratic alternative
- 34:31no Democratic Al
- 34:34alternative Mona a duty that she felt
- 34:37had fallen on her shoulder so Cory
- 34:40address unveiled her Democratic
- 34:43philosophy
- 34:47influence
- 34:49influence in shaping her vision for the
- 34:51country's future and craving for
- 34:55democracy so she are aru so with this
- 34:58statement No Cory aino expressed his
- 35:01unwavering belief in
- 35:03democracy belief in democracy following
- 35:07n's principle even challenging
- 35:09circumstances like riged in 19 uh 84
- 35:13snap election under martial law despite
- 35:17warnings from lawyers of dictator no
- 35:19because Cory choose to engage trusting
- 35:22in the people's intelligence and viewing
- 35:25it is it as a way to prepare them for a
- 35:31future democracy and to test or gauge
- 35:35the opposition's strength even if that
- 35:38participating might legitimize a
- 35:41fraudulent
- 35:42process so statement nolight cor aino
- 35:47miraculous Victory as a result
- 35:50miraculous Victory as a result of people
- 35:54struggle during her speech and you
- 35:56discuss Saia initial action no initial
- 36:01action as the president of the newly
- 36:03restored
- 36:06president of the Philippines no and
- 36:10emphasize intention to Foster
- 36:14reconciliation reconciliation after s
- 36:18div uh divisive dictatorship
- 36:22of um Marcos so Corey also emphasized
- 36:26the signific ific no significance of
- 36:28itsa People Power Revolution describing
- 36:30it as a limited Revolution limited
- 36:35Revolution yes limited Revolution that
- 36:37respected the life and freedom of every
- 36:41Filipino Citizen and with this it
- 36:43suggests a commitment to a peaceful
- 36:46transition and a focus on unity in the
- 36:50afterm of turbulent period in the n in
- 36:55nation's history
- 36:57she also boasted of the restoration of
- 37:00fully constitutional government whose
- 37:02Constitution gave outmost respect to the
- 37:05Bill of Rights no so Bill of Rights Bill
- 37:09of Rights summary of fundamental rights
- 37:13and
- 37:14privileges uh guaranteed to a people
- 37:17against violation by the government so
- 37:20Cory reported to the US Congress so
- 37:24restore democracy by ways of
- 37:27democracy so this implies that the
- 37:30transition from dictatorship to
- 37:32democracy is being carried out in
- 37:35accordance with Democratic principles
- 37:38and
- 37:40processes completing the Constitutional
- 37:42structure so this could mean uh
- 37:45finalizing and implementing the legal
- 37:49and institutional framework that governs
- 37:53the country under the new democratic
- 37:55system
- 37:57and a full respect for Bill of Rights
- 38:02and dra which be submitted later this
- 38:06year to a popular
- 38:08referendum this means that the people
- 38:11will have a direct say in accepting or
- 38:14rejecting the proposed constitutional
- 38:17changes and caning election for both
- 38:20national and local positions this marked
- 38:23a k step in the establishment of a fully
- 38:27functional democratic government
- 38:29allowing citizens of Philippines to
- 38:32choose their representatives at various
- 38:35levels of governance so Corey then
- 38:39proceed proceeded on her peace agenda
- 38:42with existing communist uh Insurgency
- 38:45aggravated by the
- 38:48dictatorial uh yes a aggravated by
- 38:53dictatorial and authoritarian measure of
- 38:56pred and maros so if we say communist
- 39:09Insurgency
- 39:11and CH Cory aino embarked on a peace
- 39:15agenda peace
- 39:17agenda aim resolving the
- 39:22Insurgency no insur uh Insurgency
- 39:25through nonmilitary
- 39:26[Music]
- 39:28means so Cory
- 39:32asserted summarize and hampered by
- 39:36respect for human
- 39:39rights it
- 39:41suggests a disregard for principles such
- 39:44as individual freedoms dignity and fair
- 39:47treatment and possibly oppressive
- 39:49measures that uh violated human rights
- 39:53standard and Corey's peace agenda
- 39:56involves political initiatives and
- 39:58reintegration program to persuade
- 40:01insurgents to leave the country side and
- 40:03return to the mainstream Society to
- 40:05participate in restoration of democracy
- 40:08and she invoked the path of Peace
- 40:11because she believed that it was the
- 40:13moral path that a moral government must
- 40:17take so k a statement underscore Nisha
- 40:20about Cory aino peace agenda that
- 40:22consists of political initiatives and
- 40:24reintegration program
- 40:26a is convincing
- 40:29insurgents abandon rural areas and
- 40:33reintegrate into a mainstream Society so
- 40:37the overarching goal is their um active
- 40:41involvement in restoring democracy
- 40:44democracy so the mention of invoking the
- 40:46path of Peace reflects ao's belief in
- 40:49the moral responsibility of a government
- 40:53to pursue in nonviolent means
- 40:58nevertheless uh with this no statement
- 41:01No suggest despite prioritizing peace
- 41:05see Corey is very firm or very matatag
- 41:09in her commitment protect freedom and
- 41:11democracy when they are under threat and
- 41:15that is
- 41:19why
- 41:22mag against freedom and democracy
- 41:27with this statement also convey like
- 41:30Abraham Lin Abraham linc 16 president
- 41:34from United States so C Corey recognizes
- 41:38the potential necessity of using Force
- 41:42before considering mercy and she is very
- 41:46determined no now to take whatever
- 41:48measures are required para is Safeguard
- 41:52Integrity freedom of her country which
- 41:54is the Philippines
- 41:57so with this statement also Corey toring
- 42:00to address the controversial issue of
- 42:02the Philippine foreign debt amounting 26
- 42:06billion at the time of her speech
- 42:09highlights a critical
- 42:11Financial um challenge soing Dept had
- 42:15significantly increased during the
- 42:16Marcos regim implying a legacy of
- 42:20financial
- 42:21burdens Financial burdens that the
- 42:23country had to navigate and Cor
- 42:26acknowledgement and approach to this
- 42:28issue would be crucial in understanding
- 42:30her policy Direction and
- 42:33properties in addressing The Economic
- 42:36Consequences of the past administration
- 42:38and Corey expressed her intention to
- 42:40honor this depths despite mentioning
- 42:43that people did not benefit from such
- 42:46death and thus she uh mentioned his
- 42:50protestation about the way Philippines
- 42:52was deprived of choices to pay those
- 42:55debt Within the capacity of uh Filipino
- 42:59people statement No indicate that s
- 43:02Corino voiced her concerned about the
- 43:05limited option available to Philippines
- 43:07for paying its uh utang in a manner that
- 43:11was sustainable or manageable for uh its
- 43:15Citizen and her focus on the capacity of
- 43:17the Filipino people to pay those
- 43:21debt highlight concern for the economic
- 43:24welfare and sity of her country which is
- 43:27the
- 43:28Philippines and she
- 43:31lamented it Highlights part no it
- 43:35highlights the situation faced by the
- 43:37Philippines at the time with the burden
- 43:40of substantial foreign debt that need to
- 43:42be addressed
- 43:45reflect Corey aino with her frustration
- 43:49with a condition to the Philippine death
- 43:52or utang which she perceived as having
- 43:55been incured without direct
- 43:58benefits Filipino
- 44:01people next she continue that while the
- 44:05country had experienced the calamities
- 44:07brought about by the corrupt
- 44:08dictatorship of Marcus no commensurate
- 44:11assistance was yet to be extended to
- 44:14Philippines and she even remarked that
- 44:16given the peaceful character of its a
- 44:18People Power Revolution ours must have
- 44:21been the cheapest Revolution ever so yes
- 44:26the chiefest revolution ever reflects on
- 44:29the peaceful uh nature of the apprising
- 44:34that
- 44:36led maros in February 1986 unlike
- 44:41retion involv of significant violence
- 44:44and destruction People Power Revolution
- 44:47was largely nonviolent with millions of
- 44:51people Gathering and demonstrating
- 44:54demand chain
- 44:57and
- 44:59statement uh about fulfilling the most
- 45:03difficult condition of death NE uh neg
- 45:07negotiation refer to uh to the
- 45:10restoration of democracy
- 45:13and responsible government and statement
- 45:19it highlights the willingness of even
- 45:22the poorest and unemployed Filipinos to
- 45:24offer their Liv for the ca of democracy
- 45:29gemphase Marcos dep commitment among the
- 45:33Filipino to democratic principles and
- 45:35their desire no for a government that
- 45:38was accountable and responsive to its
- 45:43people
- 45:45so B Cory aino slums
- 45:49area food money
- 45:52[Applause]
- 45:54materials need is democracy
- 45:58Lang and
- 46:01statement uh if we say communist
- 46:07Insurgency communist insury
- 46:14Philippines NPA or New People's
- 46:18Army so Cory further lamented that these
- 46:22problems worsed worsened by the
- 46:25crippling depth because half of the
- 46:27countes export earning amounting to $2
- 46:32billion would go to pay just the
- 46:35interest of the debt who benefited the
- 46:37Filipino will never
- 46:41receive and Cory then asked rather
- 46:43compelling questions to the US Congress
- 46:46question so AO appeal was not just for
- 46:50economic Assistance or death relief but
- 46:54for moral and political support as the
- 46:57Philippines navigated the challenges of
- 47:00rebuilding its institution and economy
- 47:04in aftermath of dictatorship and Corey
- 47:08ended Her speech by thanking America for
- 47:11serving as home to her family for what
- 47:14she referred to as the three happiest
- 47:17years of lives together she enjoyed
- 47:20America in building the Philippines as
- 47:23new home for democracy and tning the
- 47:26count is a shining Testament of our two
- 47:29Nations commitment to Freedom so aino
- 47:32eloquent closing not only expressed
- 47:36gratitude but also laid out uh a vision
- 47:39for a future in which Philippines and
- 47:41the United States continue to stand
- 47:44together in defense of democracy so this
- 47:48Vision aimed to inspire uh both Nations
- 47:52to work toward a relationship that was
- 47:54not just trans sectional but deeply
- 47:57rooted in a mutual commitment to the
- 48:02principles of freedom and democracy so
- 48:04therefore uh revisiting coron aino
- 48:07speech before the US Congress no it
- 48:09provides a compelling insight into a
- 48:12pivotal moments in the Philippine
- 48:15history and its relation with the United
- 48:18States so uh her address not only
- 48:22underscored the challenges faced by the
- 48:25pH Philippines in the aftermath of the
- 48:28Marcos dictatorship but also uh
- 48:31highlighted the shared values and
- 48:34potential for collaboration between two
- 48:38countries and that is the end of our
- 48:42discussion thank you so much for
- 48:44watching I hope you learn something new
- 48:47thank
- 48:48you
