Rookie Nurse’s Toddler Fell Asleep on the Navy SEAL’s Chest… He Didn’t Move for Three Hours — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00On Veterans Day, the staff kids at
- 0:02Riverside Naval Medical Center carried
- 0:04crayon drawings from room to room. Ava's
- 0:07three-year-old Lily picked the one room
- 0:10everybody skipped. The charge nurse
- 0:12grabbed Ava's arm. Not that one, honey.
- 0:16That seal hasn't said one kind word
- 0:19since he got here. Inside, the big Navy
- 0:22Seal sat in his recliner with his leg in
- 0:25a boot. He'd already sent the chaplain
- 0:27away. He glared at the little girl.
- 0:30>> Kid, you've got the wrong room.
- 0:32>> Lily climbed right up, laid her head on
- 0:35his chest, and yawned.
- 0:37>> "No,
- 0:38you look like my daddy's picture."
- 0:41>> She'd skipped her nap. Within a minute,
- 0:43she was fast asleep. Ava rushed in, her
- 0:46cheeks burning. "Sir, I'm so sorry. Let
- 0:50me take her." He raised one hand.
- 0:52>> "Don't you dare."
- 0:54>> He didn't move for 3 hours. Not for the
- 0:57doctor's rounds, not even for his own
- 0:59commander. Then Lily mumbled, "Daddy!"
- 1:03in her sleep, and a tear ran down his
- 1:05face.
- 1:06>> "Ma'am,
- 1:08where is her daddy?"
- 1:10>> Before we go on, who is one person you
- 1:13would give anything to sit with for one
- 1:16more afternoon? Write their name in the
- 1:18comments, and please subscribe if these
- 1:21stories mean something to you. Chief
- 1:23Mason Reed had just spent two weeks in
- 1:25the field with his SEAL team with no
- 1:28razor and no hot meals. The morning
- 1:30after they got back, he went out for a
- 1:32timed run on the beach. A mile in,
- 1:35something in his left heel snapped like
- 1:37a rubber band. He knew before he hit the
- 1:40sand. His Achilles tendon had torn clean
- 1:43through. The surgeon at Riverside Naval
- 1:46Medical Center sewed it back together
- 1:48that same afternoon and put his leg in a
- 1:50black boot. That night, Mason tried to
- 1:53walk out on crutches anyway. A nurse
- 1:55found him halfway down the hall sweating
- 1:58and gray, and Dr. Whitlock ordered him
- 2:00kept two more nights so he couldn't try
- 2:02it again. Mason did not take that well.
- 2:05He refused his pain pills. He sent his
- 2:08lunch tray back untouched. When the
- 2:10chaplain knocked and asked if he wanted
- 2:12to talk, Mason said, "No, sir." and
- 2:15turned his face to the wall. By the
- 2:17second day, the nurses had stopped using
- 2:19his name. They just called him room 12.
- 2:22Ava Sullivan was the oldest rookie on
- 2:25that floor. She was 31, 4 months out of
- 2:28nursing school, working nights, and
- 2:30slower than the 23-year-olds who had
- 2:32grown up on these units. She checked
- 2:34every chart twice. On her breaks, she
- 2:37ate a sandwich alone in her car instead
- 2:39of the break room. And if anyone asked
- 2:41about her life, she smiled and changed
- 2:43the subject. Peggy Dunn, the charge
- 2:45nurse, had worked that floor for 30
- 2:48years. She wore her reading glasses on a
- 2:50beaded chain and called everyone honey,
- 2:52even when she was mad at them. And she
- 2:54had already decided Ava was too quiet to
- 2:57last. Dr. Whitlock never used Ava's name
- 3:01at all. To him, she was just the rookie.
- 3:04None of them knew that four years
- 3:06earlier, a whole company of Marines had
- 3:08called her Doc. None of them knew why
- 3:11she was raising a three-year-old alone
- 3:12in a small apartment 10 minutes from the
- 3:15hospital with an old neighbor named Rosa
- 3:17helping at night. And none of them knew
- 3:19about the brown box in the back of her
- 3:22closet, the one with navy printing on
- 3:24the label. She had never opened it.
- 3:27Every Veterans Day, Peggy pulled a
- 3:30double shift so she could run the kids
- 3:31visit herself. Her late husband had
- 3:34served in Vietnam. staff could bring
- 3:36their children in for 1 hour, and the
- 3:38kids went roomto room handing out crayon
- 3:40drawings. Ava wasn't due on shift until
- 3:437 that evening, but she came in at 3:00,
- 3:46already in her scrubs, so Lily could be
- 3:48part of it. Rosa came along to take Lily
- 3:51home afterward. Lily had worked on her
- 3:53drawing for two whole days. It was a
- 3:56lopsided American flag with a stick
- 3:58figure man standing beside it. And when
- 4:00Ava asked who he was, Lily said, "That's
- 4:03my daddy. He's a Marine. She handed out
- 4:06her other pictures one by one, room by
- 4:09room, until she stopped in front of the
- 4:11last door at the end of the hall. The
- 4:14blinds were shut. The lunch tray outside
- 4:16was still full. Peggy caught Ava by the
- 4:19arm before she could follow. Not that
- 4:21one, honey. That seal hasn't said one
- 4:24kind word since he got here. But Lily
- 4:27had already pushed the door open and
- 4:29walked inside. Mason sat in the recliner
- 4:32by the window with his left leg propped
- 4:34on a pillow, the black boot heavy at the
- 4:36end of it. He was 39, broad through the
- 4:39shoulders with sandy brown hair cut
- 4:42close at the sides and two weeks of
- 4:44stubble going gray at the chin. He wore
- 4:46a gray navy t-shirt instead of a
- 4:48hospital gown because he had refused the
- 4:50gown, too. On the inside of his left
- 4:53forearm was a small faded tattoo, a star
- 4:56with a name written under it. He turned
- 4:59his head and stared at the tiny girl in
- 5:01the yellow sweater with a duck on the
- 5:03front. Lily held up her flag. "Are you a
- 5:06Marine?" He didn't blink. "Navy." Then
- 5:10flatter. "Kid, you've got the wrong
- 5:12room." Lily studied him for a long
- 5:15moment. Then she walked around to his
- 5:17good side, climbed right up into the
- 5:20recliner, laid her head on his chest,
- 5:22and yawned. "No, you look like my
- 5:25daddy's picture." She'd skipped her nap
- 5:28that day. Within a minute, her eyes were
- 5:30closed. Ava rushed in, her cheeks
- 5:33burning. "Sir, I'm so sorry. Let me take
- 5:37her." Mason raised one hand without
- 5:39looking up. "Don't you dare." So Ava sat
- 5:43down in the chair by the door and
- 5:44waited. Rosa pee in, took one look, and
- 5:48went off to the family lounge with her
- 5:50knitting. At 4:00, Dr. Whitlock came in
- 5:53on his rounds. He frowned at the scene
- 5:55and said, "Rookie, get your kid off my
- 5:58patient." Mason answered before Ava
- 6:01could move. "Come back later, Doc."
- 6:03Whitlock opened his mouth, looked at the
- 6:05seal's face, and closed it again. 20
- 6:08minutes later, the physical therapist
- 6:10came by to teach him the crutches. Mason
- 6:12shook his head once, and she left. The
- 6:15whole time his right hand rested flat on
- 6:18Lily's back, rising and falling with her
- 6:20breathing, and he never shifted his
- 6:22weight, even though his bad leg had to
- 6:25be aching. Ava watched him the way she
- 6:28had learned to watch hurting men years
- 6:30ago. His jaw was tight, and his eyes
- 6:33stayed fixed on the ceiling, like he was
- 6:35holding something back by force. Then,
- 6:38somewhere in the second hour, his jaw
- 6:40let go. His head tipped back against the
- 6:43recliner. His breathing slowed down to
- 6:46match the little girls. The angriest
- 6:48patient on the floor had fallen asleep.
- 6:52Near 6:00, a tall officer in khakis
- 6:54stepped into the doorway and stopped
- 6:56cold. This was Commander Ray Ellison,
- 7:00Mason's commanding officer, who had come
- 7:02to talk some sense into him. He stood
- 7:04there for a long minute. Then he turned
- 7:07to Ava and kept his voice low. Ma'am,
- 7:11I've known that man 11 years. He hasn't
- 7:14slept a full night in a year and a half.
- 7:16He set a bag of oranges on the
- 7:18windowsill and paused at the door. Keep
- 7:21an eye on him tomorrow. Tomorrow's the
- 7:23hardest day of his year. Then he was
- 7:26gone before she could ask why. A few
- 7:29minutes later, Mason's eyes opened on
- 7:31their own. He looked surprised, the way
- 7:33a man does when he wakes up and doesn't
- 7:35remember falling asleep. Lily stirred,
- 7:38curled her fingers into his t-shirt, and
- 7:41mumbled one word in her sleep. Daddy. A
- 7:45tear ran down the side of Mason's face
- 7:47and into his stubble. He didn't wipe it
- 7:50away.
- 7:52Ma'am, where is her daddy? Ava had
- 7:55answered that question a hundred times,
- 7:57and it never got easier. He died before
- 8:00she was born. Mason looked down at the
- 8:03faded star on his arm and said nothing
- 8:05for a while. When Lily finally woke, she
- 8:08sat up on his chest, rubbed her eyes,
- 8:11and noticed the star. She traced it with
- 8:13one small finger like the stars on her
- 8:16nightlight. Who's that star for? Mason
- 8:19swallowed hard. My little girl. Where is
- 8:22she? He took a breath that seemed to
- 8:25cost him something. Heaven. Lily nodded
- 8:29slowly like this made perfect sense. My
- 8:32daddy's in heaven, too. Maybe they're
- 8:34friends. Mason turned his face toward
- 8:36the window and his big shoulders shook
- 8:39once. At a/4 to 7, Rosa came to walk
- 8:42Lily home. At the door, Lily ran back
- 8:45and pressed her crayon flag into his
- 8:47hand. That's my daddy. He's a Marine. He
- 8:51held it by the corners like it might
- 8:53tear. Then, as Ava turned to go, Mason
- 8:56spoke again. Your husband was a Marine.
- 8:59It wasn't a question. And you sat in
- 9:02that chair like somebody who's done a
- 9:04lot of waiting in bad places. You were
- 9:07one of us, weren't you? Ava didn't
- 9:09answer. Nobody at Riverside knew, and
- 9:12she meant to keep it that way. At 7,
- 9:15Peggy came down the hall with the night
- 9:17assignments, stopped in the doorway of
- 9:19room 12, and looked from Mason to Ava
- 9:22over the top of her glasses. Well,
- 9:24honey, he let you in. That makes him
- 9:27yours tonight. The other nurses traded
- 9:29looks at the station, half relieved and
- 9:32half sure the rookie would come out
- 9:34crying before midnight. She didn't.
- 9:37Mason still refused the pain pill when
- 9:39she offered it at 9:00, but he drank the
- 9:41water she poured him, and he ate two of
- 9:43the commander's oranges while she
- 9:45checked the color and warmth of his
- 9:47toes. He said maybe 10 words all
- 9:50evening. Around midnight, the floor went
- 9:53still the way hospital floors do with
- 9:55nothing but the hum of machines and the
- 9:58squeak of shoes on tile. Ava sat at the
- 10:00station charting, thinking about the
- 10:03tear in his stubble and the commander's
- 10:05warning about tomorrow. At 1:30, she
- 10:08looked in on him. He was awake, staring
- 10:10at the crayon flag propped against his
- 10:12water cup. At 1:45, his light went off.
- 10:17Then at exactly 2:00 in the morning, a
- 10:20scream tore out of room 12, and every
- 10:23nurse on the floor jumped to her feet.
- 10:25Ava reached room 12 first. Mason was
- 10:28sitting straight up in the recliner,
- 10:30soaked in sweat. Both hands locked on
- 10:32the armrests so hard his knuckles had
- 10:35gone white. His eyes were open, but he
- 10:37wasn't seeing the room. He was somewhere
- 10:40else. Somewhere with rain on a
- 10:42windshield. Megan, Megan, hold on.
- 10:45Behind Ava, two nurses crowded the
- 10:47doorway and Peggy was already reaching
- 10:50for the phone to call security. Ava held
- 10:52up one hand. Give me two minutes. She
- 10:55knew what a security call meant. A note
- 10:58in his chart, a report to his command,
- 11:00and for a Navy Seal, a line in his
- 11:03record that could end his career. She
- 11:05didn't touch him. She crouched beside
- 11:07the recliner where he could see her and
- 11:09kept her voice low and steady. The way
- 11:12she used to talk to young Marines after
- 11:14a bad night. Chief Reed, you're at
- 11:16Riverside. It's 2:00 in the morning.
- 11:19Your legs in a boot and you're safe.
- 11:21Look at me. It took a full minute. Then
- 11:24his eyes found hers and his hands slowly
- 11:27let go of the armrests. Peggy studied
- 11:30the rookie, then waved the others back
- 11:32to the station. Ava filled his water cup
- 11:34and held out a pain pill on her open
- 11:36palm. Take it, chief. You can't outrun
- 11:39this one on that leg. He looked at the
- 11:41pill, then at her, and for the first
- 11:44time since he'd arrived, he took it.
- 11:46Then he started talking so low she had
- 11:49to lean in. 18 months ago, he said he
- 11:53was driving his wife and daughter home
- 11:54from a church supper on a rainy night.
- 11:57The light was green. A truck ran the red
- 11:59and hit them from the side. He walked
- 12:02away with a cut on his hand. Megan and
- 12:04little Grace didn't walk away at all.
- 12:07The police said it wasn't my fault, but
- 12:10I was the one driving. He told her Grace
- 12:12had been three, the same age as Lily.
- 12:15Every Sunday after church, she used to
- 12:17climb onto his chest and fall asleep
- 12:19there while the ball game played.
- 12:21Nobody's done that since. Then your girl
- 12:24climbed up there like she knew. Ava sat
- 12:26with him while the sky stayed black
- 12:28outside the window. He told her that
- 12:31later that day, Grace would have turned
- 12:33five. They were buried side by side at a
- 12:36little white church on Miller Hill above
- 12:38the river because Grace had loved
- 12:40watching the boats go by. He hadn't been
- 12:42back since the funeral. He couldn't make
- 12:44himself climb that hill. Then he turned
- 12:47the question around. You weren't always
- 12:49a nurse. Ava had dodged that for 4
- 12:52months. But this man had just handed her
- 12:55the worst night of his life, and it
- 12:57didn't feel right to give him nothing
- 12:59back. I was a corman, she said with the
- 13:01Marines. He nodded like it was the
- 13:04answer he expected. Thought so. You've
- 13:07got the eyes. She didn't tell him the
- 13:09rest. Not yet. But for the first time in
- 13:12almost 4 years, Ava had said those words
- 13:15out loud, and the floor didn't open up
- 13:18under her feet. Let me pause here for a
- 13:21moment. That whole floor had already
- 13:24made up its mind about the man in room
- 13:2612. angry, rude, trouble. Nobody stopped
- 13:30to ask what he was carrying. So, tell us
- 13:33in the comments, have you ever been
- 13:34judged on your worst day by people who
- 13:37didn't know your story? Just write,
- 13:39"Never judge," and share yours if you'd
- 13:42like.
- 13:44At 7 that morning, Ava drove home
- 13:46through a gray drizzle. Rosa had Lily at
- 13:49the kitchen table with cereal and
- 13:51crayons. While Ava pulled off her shoes,
- 13:53she told her daughter as gently as she
- 13:56could that the Navy man's little girl in
- 13:58heaven had a birthday today. Lily didn't
- 14:01say a word. She bent over her paper for
- 14:0420 minutes, then held it up. "Two little
- 14:06girls holding hands on a cloud with
- 14:09yellow stars all around them." "For
- 14:11grace," Lily said. "So, she has a friend
- 14:14at her party." Ava had to turn toward
- 14:16the sink for a minute. She slid the
- 14:18drawing into a plastic sleeve so it
- 14:20wouldn't crumple, tucked it in her bag,
- 14:22and planned to bring it to Mason that
- 14:24afternoon. Then she slept. Night nurses
- 14:28sleep like stones, and she didn't wake
- 14:30until almost 3. When she called the
- 14:32floor, the day nurse said room 12 was
- 14:35empty. Dr. Whitlock had signed him out
- 14:37at noon, and Mason had taken a cab home
- 14:39to his empty house without saying
- 14:42goodbye to anyone. Ava told herself that
- 14:45was good news. But all afternoon the
- 14:47commander's words kept circling back.
- 14:50Tomorrow's the hardest day of his year.
- 14:53By evening, the drizzle had turned into
- 14:56a cold, steady rain. 38° and falling. At
- 15:007:30, her phone rang. It was Peggy. And
- 15:03Peggy never called anyone. Honey,
- 15:06Commander Ellison just called the floor.
- 15:09He took dinner over to Reed's place. The
- 15:11truck's gone and his phone goes straight
- 15:13to voicemail. Did he say anything to you
- 15:16last night? Ava was already grabbing her
- 15:18keys. She knew exactly where Mason Reed
- 15:21was. She just prayed she wasn't too
- 15:24late. Rosa came across the hall in her
- 15:26slippers to take Lily and Ava drove 20
- 15:29minutes through the rain. Mason's truck
- 15:31sat alone at the bottom of Miller Hill
- 15:34beside the little white church. The
- 15:36graves were at the top. Ava pulled the
- 15:38old green bag from her trunk, the one
- 15:40with H&M 2 Sullivan stencled on the side
- 15:43that she had never been able to throw
- 15:45away, and started up the muddy path with
- 15:47her flashlight. Halfway up, she called
- 15:50911 and told them where to come. She
- 15:53found him near the top, lying on his
- 15:55side in the wet grass beside two
- 15:57headstones, one big and one small. His
- 16:01crutches were 10 ft away. His boot was
- 16:04twisted at an angle that made her
- 16:06stomach drop. He was shaking so hard his
- 16:09teeth clacked. His lips had gone blue.
- 16:12And when he tried to say her name, it
- 16:14came out slurred. He hadn't been
- 16:16drinking. After hours in that rain, he
- 16:19was freezing to death. Ava dropped to
- 16:22her knees and went to work the old way
- 16:24without stopping to think. Wet clothes
- 16:26steal heat fast, so she peeled off his
- 16:29soaked jacket and wrapped him in the
- 16:31silver foil blanket from her bag. She
- 16:33pulled her own wool hat onto his head
- 16:36and spread her dry coat over him. She
- 16:38knew not to drag him or rub his arms
- 16:41hard because a heart that cold can stop
- 16:43if you handle it rough. So she lay down
- 16:46beside him on the foil, pressed herself
- 16:48against his back, and held on to share
- 16:51whatever warmth she had. "Leave me," he
- 16:54mumbled. Go home to your girl. Not
- 16:57happening, Chief. I don't leave people
- 16:59on hills. To keep him awake, she made
- 17:02him talk about Grace, her favorite song,
- 17:05her pink rain boots, the way she said
- 17:07Pescetti. When he went quiet, Ava pulled
- 17:10out the plastic sleeve and propped
- 17:12Lily's drawing against the small stone.
- 17:15Mason saw those two little girls holding
- 17:17hands in the clouds, and he cried like a
- 17:20man who had held it in for a year and a
- 17:22half. The ambulance couldn't make it up
- 17:25the muddy lane, so two paramedics
- 17:27carried him down on a stretcher while
- 17:29Ava lit the path. One of them noticed
- 17:31the faded letters on her bag. H&M 2?
- 17:35Ma'am, where'd you get a bag like that?
- 17:37Long story, Ava said, and climbed in
- 17:40after Mason. In the ER, his body
- 17:43temperature read 91°. The doctor told
- 17:46her plainly that one more hour on that
- 17:48hill and they'd have been calling his
- 17:50commander with very different news. But
- 17:52near midnight, Dr. Whitlock came down,
- 17:55examined the leg himself, and pulled the
- 17:57curtain shut. The fall had torn the
- 18:00repair wide open. Mason would need a
- 18:02second surgery in the morning, and
- 18:04Whitlock didn't soften it. At your age,
- 18:07after two tears, you may never pass a
- 18:09seal physical again. Mason stared at the
- 18:12ceiling, and Ava watched the light go
- 18:15out of his eyes. Then he said, "There's
- 18:18nothing left." Dr. Whitlock repaired the
- 18:21tendon a second time the next morning,
- 18:23and by evening, Mason was back on the
- 18:26same floor, two doors down from room 12.
- 18:29Something had changed on that floor
- 18:31overnight. Word had gotten around that
- 18:33the rookie had climbed a muddy hill in
- 18:36the rain and kept a Navy Seal alive with
- 18:38a foil blanket and her own body heat.
- 18:41When Ava came in for her shift, Peggy
- 18:44handed her a cup of coffee without a
- 18:46word. black with two sugars, exactly how
- 18:49she took it. Dr. Whitlock passed her in
- 18:51the hall and for the first time didn't
- 18:54call her rookie. He didn't call her
- 18:56anything. He just nodded. Mason barely
- 19:00spoke that first night. Commander
- 19:02Ellison had told him the medical board
- 19:04would decide his future in the spring,
- 19:06and Mason lay there staring at the
- 19:09ceiling like a man who'd already heard
- 19:11the answer. "The Navyy's all I've got
- 19:14left," Sullivan. Ava tucked the blanket
- 19:16around his boot. You've got more than
- 19:19you think, Chief. The second night,
- 19:21around 3:00 in the morning, he finally
- 19:23asked the question she'd been waiting
- 19:25for. Why'd you come up that hill? Ava
- 19:28sat down in the chair beside him, and
- 19:30for the first time in almost 4 years,
- 19:33she told the whole story. His name was
- 19:36Danny Sullivan, a Marine sergeant with a
- 19:39crooked grin. She'd met him at Camp
- 19:41Llejun when he split his chin open
- 19:43playing pickup football and she was the
- 19:45corman who stitched it. They were
- 19:47married a year later. When he deployed,
- 19:50she stayed stateside with her unit. 6
- 19:53weeks after he left, she found out she
- 19:55was pregnant and she told him over a
- 19:57crackling satellite phone. He laughed so
- 20:00loud his whole squad heard it from
- 20:03across the camp. He told her if it was a
- 20:05girl he wanted to name her Lily. Three
- 20:09days later, two Marines in dress blues
- 20:11knocked on her door. "My enlistment was
- 20:14up that summer," Ava said. "I didn't
- 20:16sign again. I'd already lost Danny. I
- 20:20wasn't going to let our baby lose me,
- 20:21too." She went to nursing school on the
- 20:24GI Bill, studying at 2:00 in the morning
- 20:26with Lily asleep on her shoulder. And
- 20:29she never told anyone at Riverside who
- 20:31she used to be. Mason didn't speak right
- 20:34away. Why doesn't anybody here know you
- 20:37were Doc Sullivan? She looked down at
- 20:40her hands. Because a corman has one job.
- 20:43Bring everybody home. And I couldn't
- 20:46even bring home the one who mattered
- 20:47most. Mason turned his head toward her.
- 20:51You weren't even there, Ava. She gave
- 20:54him a small, tired smile. And it wasn't
- 20:57your fault either. Funny how knowing
- 20:59that doesn't help, is it? He didn't
- 21:02answer. But that was the first time he'd
- 21:04ever called her Ava, and neither of them
- 21:07missed it. He went home two days later
- 21:10in a new boot on crutches with strict
- 21:12orders not to climb any hills. Commander
- 21:16Ellison let it slip that Mason would be
- 21:18spending Thanksgiving alone with a
- 21:20frozen dinner. So Ava invited him. He
- 21:23said no. Then Lily got on the phone. You
- 21:26have to come. I'm making you a turkey
- 21:29hand. There was a long silence on the
- 21:31line. Yes, ma'am. On Thanksgiving
- 21:34afternoon, Ellison dropped him at the
- 21:36door of Ava's small apartment and handed
- 21:38her a store-bought pumpkin pie. "From
- 21:41the chief," he said, and Mason turned
- 21:44red. Lily grabbed his sleeve and pulled
- 21:46him, crutches and all, on a tour that
- 21:48took about 9 seconds, ending in her
- 21:51bedroom. On the little table beside her
- 21:53bed sat a framed photo of a grinning
- 21:56Marine in an olive green t-shirt with
- 21:58short hair and a few days of stubble.
- 22:01That's my daddy," Lily said proudly.
- 22:04Mason looked at it for a long time, and
- 22:06he finally saw what Lily saw. "He looks
- 22:09like a good man, kiddo." Then Lily ran
- 22:12to her mother's closet and came back
- 22:14hugging something dusty. "And this is
- 22:17mommy's secret box." It was a plain
- 22:20brown box, still taped shut, with a
- 22:22faded shipping label from the Department
- 22:24of the Navy. Mason knew that shape.
- 22:27Every sailor did. Ava stopped in the
- 22:30doorway with a dish towel in her hands
- 22:32and the color left her face. Lily,
- 22:35honey, please put that back. Later,
- 22:38while Lily stirred the gravy on a stool,
- 22:41Ava told him in a low voice at the
- 22:43kitchen counter. It was a bronze star.
- 22:46She'd earned it 2 years before Lily was
- 22:48born on a road overseas she still didn't
- 22:51like to talk about. The paperwork moved
- 22:54slowly, the way Navy paperwork does, and
- 22:57by the time the box arrived in the mail,
- 22:59she was out of uniform, Dany was gone,
- 23:02and Lily was 3 weeks old. Opening it
- 23:05makes it real, she said. That I came
- 23:08home, and he didn't. Mason didn't push.
- 23:12He just nodded and slid the box back
- 23:15across the counter to her gently with
- 23:17both hands. After dinner, the three of
- 23:20them ended up on the couch with the
- 23:22football game on and Mason's boot
- 23:23propped on a pillow. Lily climbed onto
- 23:26his chest the way she had on Veterans
- 23:28Day, tucked her head under his chin, and
- 23:30was asleep before halftime. Ava watched
- 23:33them from the other end of the couch,
- 23:35and something in her chest achd and
- 23:38warmed at the same time. Mason looked
- 23:40over at her. She moved closer. For one
- 23:44long second, their faces were only
- 23:46inches apart. Then he pulled back. I
- 23:50can't, Ava. Not yet. She nodded like she
- 23:54understood. And she did. When Ellison
- 23:57picked him up that night, Mason didn't
- 23:59say a word the whole drive. But later,
- 24:02sitting alone in his dark kitchen, he
- 24:04picked up his phone and called his
- 24:06commander back. Ry, there's a corman who
- 24:09never got her ceremony. I need your
- 24:11help. For a few weeks, things were good.
- 24:14Mason came over every Sunday afternoon.
- 24:17Lily made him watch the same cartoon
- 24:19movie four times. And every Sunday,
- 24:22sometime during the ball game, she fell
- 24:24asleep on his chest. And that was
- 24:27exactly what scared him. One Sunday in
- 24:30December, he looked down at the little
- 24:32girl breathing against his shirt, and
- 24:34for one terrible second, he saw Grace.
- 24:38The next Sunday, he texted that his leg
- 24:40was sore. The Sunday after that, he
- 24:43didn't text at all. Ava understood more
- 24:45than she wanted to. He wasn't running
- 24:48from them. He was running from how much
- 24:50it felt like before. But Lily didn't
- 24:53understand. Every Sunday, she sat by the
- 24:56front window with her crayons, watching
- 24:58the parking lot. Is Mason sick, Mommy?
- 25:01Ava kissed her hair. Maybe a little baby
- 25:04on the inside. Lily had one thing left
- 25:07to hold on to. Back in early December,
- 25:10she'd been picked to be a sheep in the
- 25:12Christmas Eve pageant at their little
- 25:14church. And she'd made Mason pinky
- 25:16promise right there on the couch that he
- 25:18would sit in the front row. He had
- 25:21hooked his huge finger around her tiny
- 25:23one and said, "I'll be there, kiddo.
- 25:26Front row." Lily had told everyone, her
- 25:29teacher, Rosa, the lady at the grocery
- 25:31store. On Christmas Eve, she put on her
- 25:34fluffy white costume with the little
- 25:36black ears and asked her mother to save
- 25:38the seat on the end of the front row.
- 25:41Ava laid her coat across it and checked
- 25:43her phone one more time. Nothing. The
- 25:46organ began to play. The lights went
- 25:48down and from the stage, a tiny sheep
- 25:51kept staring at the church door, but the
- 25:54seat Ava had saved for him stayed empty.
- 25:57Mason was on Miller Hill. He had driven
- 26:00there that afternoon without really
- 26:01deciding to. And this time he climbed in
- 26:04daylight, slow and careful, leaning on a
- 26:07cane with his boot crunching on the
- 26:09frozen grass. It took him 20 minutes.
- 26:12When he reached the top, he stopped.
- 26:15Someone had been there before him.
- 26:17Lily's drawing was still on Grace's
- 26:19stone, the plastic sleeve tucked into
- 26:21the little flower holder so the wind
- 26:23couldn't take it. Two little girls
- 26:25holding hands on a cloud. The yellow
- 26:28crayon stars faded but still there.
- 26:31Mason lowered himself onto the cold
- 26:33ground between the two headstones. And
- 26:35for the first time since the funeral, he
- 26:38talked to them. He told Megan about the
- 26:40rookie nurse who climbed this hill in
- 26:42the rain. He told Grace about the little
- 26:44sheep who was waiting for him. And he
- 26:47remembered what Megan used to say
- 26:48whenever he came home from a hard
- 26:50deployment and shut himself away. Don't
- 26:52you dare stop living, Mason Reed. He sat
- 26:56there until the sky turned orange. Then
- 26:58he looked at his watch and swore under
- 27:00his breath. The pageant had already
- 27:03started. The children were halfway
- 27:05through away in a manger when the back
- 27:07door of the little church creaked open.
- 27:10A tall man limped in with a cane, his
- 27:12cheeks red from the cold. Up on the
- 27:15stage, a tiny sheep stopped singing.
- 27:18Mason, you came. Every head in the
- 27:21church turned around. Somebody chuckled
- 27:23and the pastor smiled and waved the
- 27:25music on. Mason made his way down the
- 27:28aisle, one slow step at a time, and Ava
- 27:31lifted her coat off the seat on the end
- 27:33of the front row. Her eyes were wet. He
- 27:36sat down beside her and leaned close.
- 27:38"Sorry I'm late. I had to go see two
- 27:41people first." She didn't need him to
- 27:43explain. She just slid her hand into his
- 27:46and he held on to it through the whole
- 27:48rest of the pageant while one little
- 27:50sheep on the stage sang louder than
- 27:52anybody else. By the time they got back
- 27:55to Ava's apartment, real snow was
- 27:57falling, the first of the year. Lily had
- 28:00fallen asleep in the car, still in her
- 28:02sheep costume, and Ava carried her to
- 28:04bed. When she came back out, Mason was
- 28:06standing on the little front porch,
- 28:08watching the flakes drift down under the
- 28:10street light. He spoke without turning
- 28:12around. Ava, I need you to know
- 28:15something. I'm not trying to take
- 28:17Dany<unk>y's place. She stepped up
- 28:19beside him. Nobody's asking you to,
- 28:21Mason. Just take your own. He turned and
- 28:25looked at her for a long moment, the
- 28:27snow catching in her hair. Then he
- 28:29kissed her slow and careful, like a man
- 28:33who wasn't sure he was still allowed to
- 28:35be happy. Ava kissed him back like she'd
- 28:38been waiting 4 years for someone to give
- 28:41her a reason to. On New Year's Eve,
- 28:44Peggy insisted on taking Lily for a
- 28:46sleepover. "Aunt Peggy's got popcorn and
- 28:48a movie, honey," she told Ava with a
- 28:51wink. "Go have yourself a night." Ava
- 28:53made dinner. Mason brought flowers he
- 28:56clearly didn't know how to hold. They
- 28:58ate by candlelight at her little kitchen
- 29:00table, and when an old love song came on
- 29:03the radio, he set his cane against the
- 29:05wall and danced with her in their socks,
- 29:07careful of his boot, laughing when he
- 29:10stepped on her toes. At midnight, he
- 29:12kissed her and she took his hand and led
- 29:15him down the hall. And what happened
- 29:17after that belongs to the two of them.
- 29:20But one thing is worth telling. Mason
- 29:22Reed slept through the whole night with
- 29:25Ava's head resting on his chest. No
- 29:27screaming, no rain on the windshield.
- 29:31For the first time in almost 2 years, he
- 29:34woke up to sunlight.
- 29:36Spring came slowly and so did his leg.
- 29:40Ava made him do every exercise every
- 29:43single day, even the ones he hated. In
- 29:46April, the medical board made its
- 29:48decision. Mason would never go back to
- 29:50an operational team. But they cleared
- 29:53him to teach, and he took orders as an
- 29:55instructor at the training command 20
- 29:57minutes from AA's front door, teaching
- 29:59young sailors how to come home alive.
- 30:02Then one evening in late summer,
- 30:04Commander Ellison called Mason, and Ava
- 30:07only heard Mason's half of the call.
- 30:10Yes, sir. She has no idea. I'll make
- 30:12sure she brings it. When Ava asked what
- 30:14that was about, Mason just smiled and
- 30:17said, "Navy business." She'd find out
- 30:20exactly what kind of business on
- 30:22Veterans Day. One year to the day after
- 30:25a little girl fell asleep on the
- 30:27angriest patient at Riverside, Peggy
- 30:30asked Ava to come in early for a short
- 30:32staff gathering in the main lobby. Ava
- 30:34walked in and stopped. The lobby was
- 30:37packed. nurses from every floor, Dr.
- 30:41Whitlock in a clean white coat,
- 30:43Commander Ellison in his dress uniform.
- 30:46Mason stood near the front in his dress
- 30:48blues with Lily on his hip. And on a
- 30:50small table beside the podium sat a
- 30:53dusty brown box, still taped shut. That
- 30:56morning, Mason had asked her to bring it
- 30:58to work and leave it with Peggy. "Trust
- 31:00me," he'd said. Ellison stepped to the
- 31:03microphone and read the citation out
- 31:05loud. 6 years ago on a road overseas
- 31:09after an ambush, hospital corman
- 31:11secondass Ava Sullivan had run through
- 31:14gunfire twice to drag two wounded
- 31:16Marines behind a stone wall. And she had
- 31:19kept them both alive for 40 minutes
- 31:21until the helicopter came.
- 31:24And in the third row, holding the hand
- 31:26of a little boy, stood one of those two
- 31:29Marines. His name was Luis Ortega. Ava
- 31:33hadn't seen him in six years. He walked
- 31:35up, hugged her hard, and said, "Doc, you
- 31:39told me I'd live to meet my son. This is
- 31:42him." With shaking hands, Ava finally
- 31:45opened the brown box. Mason set Lily
- 31:48down beside Peggy, lifted out the bronze
- 31:51star, and pinned it to her scrub top
- 31:53right over her heart. Dr. Whitlock was
- 31:56the first one on his feet, clapping.
- 31:58Peggy was crying into her beaded glasses
- 32:00chain. The whole lobby stood up. every
- 32:04last person except one. Mason had gone
- 32:07back to the front row and Lily had
- 32:09climbed onto his chest the moment he sat
- 32:12down and fallen fast asleep. So while
- 32:14the entire hospital stood and cheered
- 32:17for Ava Sullivan, one Navy Seal stayed
- 32:20in his seat. He didn't move until the
- 32:22lobby was empty. And from that day on,
- 32:25nobody at Riverside ever called her the
- 32:27rookie again. That night after the
- 32:30dishes, Mason got down on one knee in
- 32:33Ava's little kitchen. The leg that had
- 32:35torn twice trembling under him. "This
- 32:38leg's been through a lot," he said,
- 32:40holding up a small ring. "Figured it
- 32:43could handle one more thing." Ava
- 32:45laughed through her tears and said yes
- 32:47before he could finish asking. Later, he
- 32:50tucked Lily into bed. On her nightstand,
- 32:53there were two photos now. One was her
- 32:55daddy in his marine t-shirt, grinning.
- 32:58The other was new, taken that afternoon
- 33:01in the hospital lobby and printed by
- 33:03Peggy at the nurse's station. Lily, fast
- 33:06asleep on Mason's chest. Lily yawned and
- 33:09pulled the blanket to her chin. Night,
- 33:11Daddy. Mason froze in the doorway. Then
- 33:15he cleared his throat and answered the
- 33:17only way he could. Night, baby girl.
