2. 0:03landmark war crimes trial in Montreal
3. 0:06former General Romeo de will recount the
4. 0:09horrors of the Rwandan Genocide at the
5. 0:11trial of Desire Muna the Toronto man is
6. 0:15accused of leading a Hu militia on a
7. 0:17rampage of rapes and murders during the
8. 0:191994 Massacre the cbc's Dan Halton has
9. 0:24more this will be the first time Romeo
10. 0:26deair testifies in a courtroom in Canada
11. 0:29the retired Canadian General who led the
12. 0:31United Nations peacekeeping mission in
13. 0:33Rwanda has never met the accused desire
14. 0:36munza but will give evidence as an
15. 0:38expert witness on the Rwandan geni
16. 0:40Genocide to provide the broader context
17. 0:43of what happened helping the prosecution
18. 0:45make its case against munza munza is the
19. 0:48first person accused under Canada's
20. 0:50recent war crimes act he faces seven
21. 0:53charges of war crimes genocide and
22. 0:55crimes against humanity all of which
23. 0:58carry a life sentence that would be
24. 0:59served in Canada and so far the trial is
25. 1:02heard from a handful of witnesses who
26. 1:04identified munza as having murdered and
27. 1:07raped dozens of rwandans as well as an
28. 1:09RCMP officer who's investigating mz's
29. 1:12role in the genocide that resulted in
30. 1:14the deaths of more than 800,000 rwandans
31. 1:16in the spring of 1994 delir has
32. 1:19testified before the international
33. 1:21criminal tribunal uh for Rwanda in 2004
34. 1:24and he admitted uh that reliving those M
35. 1:27those painful memories took an emotional
36. 1:29whole he forgot some of the uh events uh
37. 1:32during
38. 1:33cross-examination and people now are
39. 1:35watching to see how delir will react uh
40. 1:39to being cross-examined this time Delair
41. 1:41has as you recall has suffered from
42. 1:43post-traumatic stress disorder as well
43. 1:45as attempted suicide uh in the wake of
44. 1:47what he went through in Rwanda but he
45. 1:49has since uh given hundreds of speeches
46. 1:52and published a book about his
47. 1:53experience still many are watching to
48. 1:55see how he'll react this time his
49. 1:57testimony is expected to last 3 days and
50. 2:00the prosecution is hoping to wrap up its
51. 2:02part of the case by the end of this
52. 2:03month or early
