- 0:00Romans [music] chapter 6.
- 0:02Now this is the baptism chapter.
- 0:05This is where Paul's going to teach us
- 0:07how [music] we can become united with
- 0:10what Jesus did on the cross.
- 0:12What is the ceremony? What is the right
- 0:14of passage whereby we cease to be
- 0:18condemned under our own authority and we
- 0:21become children, [music] bond slaves,
- 0:24liberated servants of God through
- 0:26Christ.
- 0:27That's what this chapter is going to be
- 0:29about, okay?
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:30>> And he finished [clears throat] the last
- 0:33chapter by telling us that where sin
- 0:37abounded, grace abounded more.
- 0:41And what he was talking about is he he
- 0:43was saying that as the world got worse
- 0:45and worse, Jesus came with a bigger
- 0:48love, a bigger grace, a bigger salvation
- 0:52than the biggest sins that the world had
- 0:53ever known.
- 0:55But that raises a question of whether
- 0:58we, not the world, but we in the church,
- 1:02can keep on sinning. Paul's going to fix
- 1:04that problem [music] real decisively.
- 1:07Does that make sense? Cuz he's he's
- 1:08raised a question for the Roman church,
- 1:11the saints of God at Rome. He's raised a
- 1:13question, oh, well, if grace multiplied
- 1:17from God through Jesus when the world
- 1:19got more sinful, maybe we should be more
- 1:21sinful and we'll get more grace, too.
- 1:25They had a little 21st century questions
- 1:27there. But Romans chapter 6 verse 1,
- 1:30"What shall we say then?
- 1:35What shall we say then?
- 1:38Are we to continue in sin so that grace
- 1:42may increase?
- 1:45May it never be.
- 1:49How shall we who died to sin
- 1:55live in it?"
- 1:57So Paul's saying,
- 1:59"Are you thinking I'm suggesting sin can
- 2:02be in the church and that's okay?"
- 2:04Absolutely
- 2:06not.
- 2:07He asks a question, "How shall we who
- 2:11died to sin live in it?"
- 2:15And the answer has to be, "Paul, we
- 2:17can't."
- 2:19Whatever dying to sin is, it means we
- 2:22can't keep living in it.
- 2:25for Paul.
- 2:27Or do you not know that all of us who
- 2:30have been baptized into Christ Jesus
- 2:36have been baptized into his death?
- 2:40How do you get under the atoning blood?
- 2:43How do you get under the sacrifice
- 2:46that bore and absorbed and took away
- 2:49your sins? You're baptized into his
- 2:52death.
- 2:54That's what it means to die to sin.
- 2:56Therefore, we have been buried with him
- 3:00through baptism
- 3:02into
- 3:04death.
- 3:07Where were we buried?
- 3:10Into death.
- 3:14Death to what?
- 3:15Death to the reign of sin.
- 3:19If baptism doesn't do that, it doesn't
- 3:21do what the Bible wants it to do.
- 3:25Notice that in the first place, he says
- 3:27we were baptized into Christ.
- 3:33As if Christ were a place
- 3:36and we were submerged
- 3:38through baptism into a place.
- 3:41He didn't say we were baptized into
- 3:42water.
- 3:44We're baptized into the bottom of the
- 3:45river.
- 3:47Baptized means to submerge.
- 3:49If I If I take a tissue
- 3:53and I
- 3:55take this tissue and I submerge it into
- 3:57my tea, I baptized it into tea.
- 4:01And that's what the word baptizo means.
- 4:03It means to submerge a piece of cloth
- 4:07until it's dyed and changes color. It's
- 4:10so utterly submerged. So, baptism is the
- 4:13idea of being plunged into a place until
- 4:17you change identity.
- 4:20But, he says we were baptized into
- 4:22Christ.
- 4:24Do you want to be in Jesus?
- 4:27Do you want to be inside the only saved
- 4:30man?
- 4:33Jesus does not present formulaic
- 4:36salvation. Do this and you'll be saved.
- 4:39The Bible presents positional salvation.
- 4:43Come in here and you'll be saved.
- 4:47So, salvation is spoken of as in Christ.
- 4:51Christ is a place. That means our minds
- 4:54get out of a certain place and into a
- 4:55new place. Out of the world, out of
- 4:58self, into Christ.
- 5:00That means our habits leave. We're no
- 5:01longer conformed to the patterns of this
- 5:03world, but we're transformed by the
- 5:05renewing of our minds. That means our
- 5:08friendships and relationships are
- 5:10different. The friends you formerly
- 5:12walked with, Peter spoke of, now we are
- 5:15in Christ. That means we are translated
- 5:18out of the kingdom of darkness into the
- 5:21kingdom of the son of his love. So, it's
- 5:23positional. We're moved from one state
- 5:26into another state.
- 5:28We're moved from one kingdom into
- 5:30another kingdom, one culture into
- 5:31another culture, one name into another
- 5:33name, one spirit into another spirit.
- 5:36So, he says
- 5:38or do you not know that all of us who
- 5:39have been baptized into Christ, into
- 5:42Christ, we were baptized into Christ.
- 5:44That's how you get in him through
- 5:45baptism.
- 5:46That's the watery doorway
- 5:49into Christ Jesus have been baptized
- 5:52into his death.
- 5:54So, you enter Jesus through a death.
- 5:59Therefore, we have been buried with him
- 6:01through baptism into death. So, that as
- 6:05Christ was raised from the dead through
- 6:08the glory of the Father, so we too might
- 6:10walk in newness of life. And this word
- 6:14might walk in newness of life answers
- 6:16the question, how can we live in it any
- 6:19longer sin?
- 6:20We can't. We got to walk in newness of
- 6:23life.
- 6:24For if we have become united with him in
- 6:30the likeness of his death, certainly we
- 6:32shall also be in the likeness of his
- 6:34resurrection. If
- 6:37If
- 6:38If you haven't undergone the death of
- 6:40your self-will in repentance, you
- 6:43haven't been united with his death.
- 6:46His death is what atones for you. Your
- 6:48repentance is what unites you
- 6:52to the death that atones for you. Your
- 6:54repentance doesn't atone for you.
- 6:57It just gets rid of the old master so
- 6:59that you can be part of him who atoned
- 7:01for you.
- 7:02But you can't marry him while still
- 7:04married to your old man.
- 7:06That's asking God to commit adultery.
- 7:08There's got to be a divorce. You got to
- 7:11have a death to the old self in order to
- 7:13have a union with the new man, Jesus
- 7:15Christ.
- 7:17For if we have been united with him in
- 7:19the likeness of his death, certainly we
- 7:21shall be in the likeness of his
- 7:22resurrection. Knowing this, that our old
- 7:25self was crucified
- 7:27with him.
- 7:29Our old self was crucified with him.
- 7:32In order that our body of sin might be
- 7:35done away with.
- 7:37He's still answering the question, shall
- 7:39we continue in sin?
- 7:41And he's he's saying, "No, no, no."
- 7:46Was your old man, your old self, the old
- 7:49you crucified?
- 7:52Did it go through such a surrender, such
- 7:54an abdication of the throne that it was
- 7:57like death on a Roman cross?
- 8:00Oh, good. That's repentance. And through
- 8:02that repentance, you have union with
- 8:04Jesus.
- 8:06Knowing this, that our old self was
- 8:08crucified with him in order that our
- 8:09body of sin might be done away with, so
- 8:12that we would no longer be slaves to
- 8:15sin.
- 8:17When repentance is accomplished, does
- 8:19that mean we never make mistakes?
- 8:22No. We make mistakes. James says we all
- 8:25stumble in many ways.
- 8:28Does that mean we never sin? No, we sin.
- 8:31Revelations tells us to repent from the
- 8:34sin in the place from which we have
- 8:35fallen.
- 8:38Right?
- 8:39But,
- 8:41we never become a slave of sin again.
- 8:46We never accept the tyranny of our
- 8:49self-will as lord of our life again.
- 8:53God, through grace, has broken that
- 8:56bondage.
- 8:59And that death to the old tyranny of
- 9:01self-will,
- 9:03that's what it means to die with him.
- 9:04>> [clears throat]
- 9:06>> So that we would no longer be slaves to
- 9:09sin.
- 9:10For he who has died
- 9:13is freed
- 9:15from sin.
- 9:18How do you know if you've died? Are you
- 9:19freed from sin?
- 9:22If you're not freed from sin, then
- 9:24there's a deeper place of repentance God
- 9:25wants to bring you to.
- 9:27How do you know when you're freed from
- 9:28sin? If you're perfect? Nope.
- 9:31But if the pattern and habit of your
- 9:33life is not habitual sin. If you're not
- 9:37a slave
- 9:39to sin,
- 9:40then you've died.
- 9:41But if you are overcome
- 9:44by powers beyond your control,
- 9:48often,
- 9:49rhythmically, habitually, you're a slave
- 9:52to sin.
- 9:53For by whatever a man is overcome, by
- 9:55that he is enslaved. Don't kid yourself.
- 9:58Now, if we have died with Christ, we
- 10:00believe we shall also live with him. If
- 10:03we have died with him. Knowing that
- 10:05Christ, having been raised from the
- 10:08dead, is never to die again.
- 10:11>> [clears throat]
- 10:11>> Death no longer is master over him.
- 10:16So, we got to get the master of sin off
- 10:19so that we can become part of him who
- 10:21overcame the master of death.
- 10:24For the death that he died, he died to
- 10:27sin once for all.
- 10:31But the life that he lives, he lives to
- 10:33God.
- 10:35Even so, consider yourselves to be dead
- 10:38to sin, but alive to God in Jesus
- 10:41Christ.
- 10:42Therefore,
- 10:44do not let
- 10:48sin reign in your mortal [clears throat]
- 10:50body, so that you obey its lust.
- 10:55Uh people are going to try to say that
- 10:56everything he's talking about is
- 10:57something Jesus did apart from us. Nope.
- 11:00Nope, that's a lie. That's a stupid
- 11:02deception.
- 11:04Or else Paul wouldn't say, "Therefore,
- 11:06don't let."
- 11:10If he's telling the church, "Do not let
- 11:12sin reign in your body," he's saying you
- 11:14have a will. You have a part to play in
- 11:16this equation.
- 11:18Now, how do we put to death
- 11:20the deeds of the flesh? He's going to
- 11:22tell us in two chapters, "If by the
- 11:24Spirit you put to death the deeds of the
- 11:26flesh, you will live."
- 11:28You can't put to death the deeds of the
- 11:29flesh by your will, but your will
- 11:32decides who's going to be Lord.
- 11:35Your will says yes to God and God
- 11:38through grace conquers your your flesh.
- 11:41Your conscience says, "I'm going to
- 11:43surrender. I'm going to say yes."
- 11:46And then by the Spirit, you put to death
- 11:48the deeds of the flesh. Therefore, do
- 11:50not let sin reign in your mortal bodies
- 11:53so that you obey its lust. And do not go
- 11:56on presenting the members of your body
- 11:59to sin as instruments of
- 12:02unrighteousness.
- 12:04But present yourself to God.
- 12:07This is the terminology that a slave
- 12:10would do with a master every morning.
- 12:12Good morning, master. I am here. What
- 12:14are my orders for today? Present
- 12:16yourself to God
- 12:19as those alive from the dead.
- 12:22I just came out of the grave. The grave
- 12:26of habitual bondage to my own desires.
- 12:29The grave of the tyranny of my own
- 12:32fallen will.
- 12:33And I by grace have made a choice to
- 12:36accept you as Lord and Savior.
- 12:38Present yourself to God as those alive
- 12:42from the dead and your members as
- 12:44instruments of righteousness. What good
- 12:47do you want to do through me today, God?
- 12:49This right here is an instrument of
- 12:51righteousness. This right here is an
- 12:53instrument of righteousness. These eyes,
- 12:56too, instruments of righteousness. These
- 12:58feet are instruments of righteousness.
- 13:00How do you want to use your instruments,
- 13:02God? I'm alive from the dead.
- 13:07For sin shall not be master
- 13:12over you. Are you going to make
- 13:14mistakes?
- 13:16Are you going to blow it? Are you going
- 13:17to say things you wish you hadn't said?
- 13:20Are you going to sin at times? Yes.
- 13:23But Peter said
- 13:25that if we are entangled in sin and
- 13:29overcome,
- 13:32our last state is going to be worse than
- 13:34before we believed and became a
- 13:35Christian.
- 13:37You're going to get entangled. You're
- 13:38going to make mistakes. You're going to
- 13:40blow it.
- 13:41But don't ever choose to go back
- 13:45to the master of sin.
- 13:48Let those mistakes
- 13:50bring you back to repentance.
- 13:53Bring you back to a reconciliation
- 13:55of Jesus' lordship.
- 13:58For sin shall not be master over you,
- 14:02for you are not under law, but under
- 14:05grace.
- 14:06What then?
- 14:07Shall we sin because we are not under
- 14:10law, but under grace? May it never be!
- 14:14He asks the same question he starts the
- 14:16chapter with. He's saying, "Are y'all
- 14:18going to confuse what I'm saying and act
- 14:20like you can sin because you're not
- 14:21under law, but under grace? May it never
- 14:24be!" Why?
- 14:27Do you not know
- 14:29that when you present yourselves to
- 14:31someone as slaves for obedience, you are
- 14:36slaves of the one whom you obey?
- 14:39Whether of sin resulting in death
- 14:44or of obedience resulting in
- 14:46righteousness.
- 14:48So he says, "You think because you're
- 14:50under grace, you're not going to be
- 14:51accountable for becoming a slave to sin?
- 14:53Oh,
- 14:54let me disabuse you of that delusion."
- 14:57He says, "Do you not know?"
- 14:59Christians who are asking Paul the
- 15:01question, "Do you not know?"
- 15:03Whomever you present yourself to obey,
- 15:06you are in fact the slave of that
- 15:07person.
- 15:08If you are habitually committing sin,
- 15:12you are a slave to sin, which means
- 15:15you're no longer the slave of Jesus.
- 15:19But thanks be to God
- 15:22that though you were slaves
- 15:25of sin
- 15:26you became obedient from the heart
- 15:30to that form of teaching to which you
- 15:34were committed.
- 15:36What was the solution? It was faith.
- 15:39What did faith look like? Becoming
- 15:41obedient from the heart.
- 15:44That's not law adherence.
- 15:46Legalism is becoming externally
- 15:49compliant.
- 15:51Faith is becoming obedient from the
- 15:54heart. I love my master. I want to do
- 15:57God's will. He's changed my affections.
- 16:00He's purchased my
- 16:02loyalty and I want to do it for his
- 16:04pleasure.
- 16:06You became obedient from the heart to
- 16:08that form of doctrine to which you were
- 16:12committed.
- 16:13The doctrine wasn't given to you.
- 16:16You were given into the form of a
- 16:18doctrine.
- 16:19You were given into the body, a design
- 16:23that God gave. You were given to it.
- 16:26But you can walk out of it.
- 16:30And having been freed from sin, you
- 16:33became slaves
- 16:35of righteousness.
- 16:38I am speaking in human terms because of
- 16:40the weakness of your flesh.
- 16:44For just as you presented your members
- 16:46as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness
- 16:49resulting in further lawlessness, so now
- 16:53present your members as slaves to
- 16:56righteousness resulting
- 16:59in sanctification.
- 17:02Now, we're told that without
- 17:03sanctification, no one will see the
- 17:05Lord. And we're told that presenting
- 17:07your actual body as a slave of
- 17:10righteousness results in sanctification.
- 17:13There's no scenario where Paul does not
- 17:15want us to live holy. Where Paul thinks
- 17:17we can be saved in an unsanctified
- 17:20rebellious life that is still enslaved
- 17:23to sin. If that's what you believe,
- 17:24you're believing a lie.
- 17:28For when you were slaves of sin,
- 17:31you were free in regard to
- 17:33righteousness.
- 17:34He means you had righteousness had no
- 17:37authority in your life.
- 17:40Somebody godly could say something to
- 17:41you, "I'm free from obeying that."
- 17:43Doesn't it feel good?
- 17:45But you're not free
- 17:47to disobey your instincts.
- 17:50You're not free from your pride.
- 17:52You're not free from your fear. You're a
- 17:53slave to that.
- 17:58Therefore, what benefit
- 18:01were you then deriving
- 18:03from the things of which you are now
- 18:05ashamed? He's like, "How did you like
- 18:07that?
- 18:08You're going to go back to that?
- 18:10You liked the life where you were the
- 18:12slave of sin?
- 18:13And you had righteousness had no power
- 18:15over you? Cuz you were free from
- 18:17righteousness.
- 18:19What benefit?
- 18:21For the outcome of those things
- 18:24is death.
- 18:25He doesn't say it was death.
- 18:27But now you've been rubber-stamped by
- 18:29Jesus, so don't worry about it. He says
- 18:30it is death.
- 18:32And who's he writing to? Who's he
- 18:33talking to?
- 18:34Born-again Christians.
- 18:36It's still death.
- 18:38The outcome of those things is death.
- 18:42But now having been freed from sin
- 18:46and enslaved to God,
- 18:49you derive your benefit
- 18:51resulting in sanctification. That's your
- 18:54benefit.
- 18:56And the outcome of sanctification?
- 18:58Eternal life.
- 19:02For
- 19:04the wages of sin
- 19:07is death.
- 19:09But the free gift of God is eternal life
- 19:13in Jesus [music] Christ our Lord.
- 19:16If you're going to go back to that sin,
- 19:19you're going to get paid for that
- 19:21that time
- 19:22and those wages are not going to be a
- 19:24paycheck, they're going to be death.
- 19:27But God has given you a free gift
- 19:30and it's going to come to your life as
- 19:32you freely accept his lordship
- 19:34and as you let yourself be sanctified
- 19:37through his grace
- 19:39to be more and more like him.
- 19:41And you're never going to be good enough
- 19:43to have earned heaven.
- 19:45You're always going to need his
- 19:47righteousness imputed to you.
- 19:50But you need to be a slave of
- 19:51righteousness [music]
- 19:52and that process of perfection needs to
- 19:54be happening and improving all the time.
- 19:58So long
- 19:59as our salvation is nearer than when we
- 20:01began, we're on the right track. We're
- 20:04persevering, we're heading in the right
- 20:05direction. As soon as it stops,
- 20:09as soon as we're no longer increasing in
- 20:11the knowledge of the Lord,
- 20:13we are becoming [music] barren and
- 20:14unfruitful.
- 20:16Repentance is where you die to
- 20:18self-will. Baptism is where you bury it.
- 20:20In that barrier, you're put under the
- 20:22blood of Jesus. [music] When you come
- 20:23back up, you're not allowed to go back
- 20:25and live for sin. If you do, you're
- 20:27actually a slave to sin. If you're a
- 20:28slave to sin, you're going to die in
- 20:30sin. But if you're submitting to what
- 20:33you promised, submitting to the lordship
- 20:35of Jesus, then by faith [music]
- 20:37you're being sanctified and so long as
- 20:39that's happening, God is accepting you
- 20:41because of what Jesus suffered for
- 20:43[music] you at the cross.
