- 0:00So, in the previous [music]
- 0:01chapter, Paul has given us the kind of
- 0:04faith
- 0:05that allows us to appropriate the
- 0:09salvation that Jesus has wrought for us
- 0:12on the cross.
- 0:13And that kind of faith
- 0:16is exemplified in the life of Abraham.
- 0:19Abraham believed God or had faith in God
- 0:23and [music] it, his faith, was credited
- 0:27as righteousness.
- 0:29So, Paul defines [music] this faith as
- 0:32not growing weak when he looks at his
- 0:34own inability. Paul defines this faith
- 0:36[music] as steps of faith. Paul defines
- 0:40this faith as believing in the promise,
- 0:43in the God who calls life from the dead
- 0:46and calls [music] those things that are
- 0:47not as though they are. So, he has told
- 0:50us that
- 0:52salvation will not be brokered through
- 0:54adherence to the external law.
- 0:57He has showed us instead it will be
- 0:59brokered through faith. But then he has
- 1:02defined faith not according to a 21st
- 1:05century evangelical understanding,
- 1:06[music]
- 1:07but according to the life of Abraham.
- 1:10That's our definition of what Paul
- 1:12thinks faith is.
- 1:14Romans chapter 5 verse 1, "Therefore,
- 1:16having been justified by faith, we have
- 1:20peace with God through our Lord Jesus
- 1:23Christ."
- 1:24Because of what Jesus did,
- 1:26>> [music]
- 1:26>> because of how he settled the accounts
- 1:28at Calvary,
- 1:30we don't have to worry about the penalty
- 1:33for our sin so long as we are acting as
- 1:36the bondslave of the one who paid our
- 1:38bond, so long as we are living
- 1:40>> [music]
- 1:40>> by faith.
- 1:42"Therefore, having been justified by
- 1:44faith, we have peace with God through
- 1:46our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also
- 1:49we have obtained our introduction by
- 1:53faith into this grace in which we stand.
- 1:58And we exalt in hope of the glory of
- 2:01God.
- 2:03So, we've had an introduction into
- 2:05grace. Grace referring to the enabling
- 2:08power of God in human life.
- 2:11Not permission from God's
- 2:13accountability, but ability from God to
- 2:17be more than we were.
- 2:19We exalt in hope of the glory of God.
- 2:21And not only this, but we also exalt
- 2:25Exalt means rejoice. In tribulations.
- 2:29Knowing that tribulation brings about
- 2:32perseverance.
- 2:34So, Paul has just told us that we have
- 2:37an introduction into God's grace. I want
- 2:39you to note that he did not say we have
- 2:42arrived at the end of grace. We have
- 2:44arrived instead at the beginning. We
- 2:46have an introduction. Okay? And now he's
- 2:49going to show us that whatever we think
- 2:52we have of grace and faith,
- 2:54it is not static.
- 2:57Just like the previous chapter that
- 2:58showed us the steps of faith of our
- 3:01father Abraham, Paul is now going to
- 3:03show us that we've got an introduction,
- 3:06but that introduction needs to become a
- 3:08lifestyle. It needs to become a journey
- 3:10that reaches toward a culmination in
- 3:13heaven.
- 3:14Faith is not about a moment in time.
- 3:18It starts in a moment in time, but it
- 3:20must carry on through
- 3:23an ever-increasing relationship of trust
- 3:26with the Lord Jesus.
- 3:28So, he says we have an introduction
- 3:32by faith into this grace, in which we
- 3:34stand.
- 3:36And we rejoice in hope of the glory of
- 3:40God.
- 3:41Now, he's going to
- 3:42elucidate the journey. Ready? Verse
- 3:44three.
- 3:46And not only this,
- 3:48God didn't just give us an introduction.
- 3:50Not only a start,
- 3:53but we also
- 3:55exult in our tribulations,
- 3:59knowing
- 4:00that tribulation brings about
- 4:03perseverance.
- 4:05And perseverance brings about proven
- 4:08character.
- 4:10And proven character
- 4:11hope.
- 4:14And hope
- 4:15does not disappoint because
- 4:19the love of God
- 4:22has been poured out within our hearts
- 4:24through the Holy Spirit who was given to
- 4:27us.
- 4:29For while we were still helpless
- 4:32at that time, Christ died for the
- 4:35ungodly.
- 4:37Okay.
- 4:38What is he telling us here?
- 4:40He's telling us that what we have is a
- 4:42great start, but it's not good enough to
- 4:44be complacent.
- 4:47He's telling us that God wants
- 4:49perseverance in our life. That means
- 4:51continuing to persist in the right way.
- 4:55Isn't that how he defined faith in
- 4:57chapter two when he says that there's a
- 5:00way to seek
- 5:02for glory, honor, and immortality by
- 5:05patiently continuing to do what is good?
- 5:09That's perseverance. And he says
- 5:11tribulation brings about perseverance.
- 5:14How does tribulation bring about
- 5:16perseverance? Because tribulation tries
- 5:18to stop you from doing what's right.
- 5:22And until you encounter that wish, that
- 5:26instinct to stop,
- 5:29you don't know what it means to press,
- 5:33to persevere, to keep going.
- 5:36So, the temptation to quit is the
- 5:39opportunity to persevere.
- 5:42And then he tells us that perseverance
- 5:44does something very good, too.
- 5:47Perseverance
- 5:49brings about proven
- 5:52character.
- 5:55We don't have character
- 5:57until
- 5:58every nerve
- 6:00and instinct in our body was saying,
- 6:03"Give up.
- 6:04It's not worth it. Quit. This is too
- 6:07much. You can't do it."
- 6:10But when we persevere,
- 6:12we build character.
- 6:14We finish the task. We keep the faith.
- 6:18We do what God said to do. We don't lose
- 6:22heart. We keep walking.
- 6:25Like Abraham,
- 6:26failure, failure,
- 6:29blind curve, misunderstanding,
- 6:32disappointment, betrayal, keep going.
- 6:36And when you keep going, when you
- 6:38persevere against all odds, that's
- 6:41called proven character. And then he
- 6:43says, "But proven character's not the
- 6:45whole goal, either. Proven character
- 6:48produces
- 6:50hope."
- 6:53What he's telling us is that Christians
- 6:54who have faith
- 6:58without proven character
- 7:00don't actually have real hope.
- 7:02Because if you can't keep that faith in
- 7:04the face of all the opposition,
- 7:07that faith is not going to see you
- 7:08through.
- 7:10Colossians 1:22
- 7:12says,
- 7:14"He has now reconciled you in his
- 7:16fleshly body through death in order to
- 7:18present you before him holy and
- 7:20blameless and beyond reproach, if indeed
- 7:23you continue in the faith, firmly
- 7:26established and steadfast, and not moved
- 7:30away from the hope of the gospel that
- 7:33you have heard."
- 7:34So, you're not reconciled if you don't
- 7:36continue.
- 7:38But he's reconciled you if you continue.
- 7:42But if you don't continue, if you don't
- 7:44persevere, you will be moved away from
- 7:46the hope.
- 7:48So, perseverance produces character,
- 7:50character produces hope. And when when
- 7:53hope is the product of a character
- 7:57that obeys what God has said and not
- 8:00what circumstance dictates,
- 8:02that hope will not disappoint.
- 8:06And hope does not disappoint. Why does
- 8:09hope not disappoint?
- 8:12Because the love of God has been poured
- 8:16out within our hearts through the Holy
- 8:18Spirit who was given to us.
- 8:22Hope without the love of God in our
- 8:25lives through the Holy Spirit is a hope
- 8:28that disappoints.
- 8:30If you ever feel like your perseverance
- 8:33might have produced character,
- 8:36and your character might have produced
- 8:37hope, but that hope was starting to
- 8:39disappoint, that the journey wasn't
- 8:42worth it,
- 8:43that you're growing weary in well-doing,
- 8:46that you don't believe you're going to
- 8:47reap,
- 8:48that's because the love of God is drying
- 8:51up in your heart.
- 8:53But, if as Jesus told the Christians in
- 8:56the book of Revelations, you've lost
- 8:58your first love, he also told them,
- 9:00"Therefore, repent
- 9:03and get it back. Do again the things you
- 9:05did at the beginning."
- 9:07Hope won't disappoint you if you're
- 9:10living not for yourself, but for love of
- 9:13others and God. And that love is not
- 9:16your possession.
- 9:17It doesn't show how noble you are. It
- 9:20shows that the Holy Spirit is alive in
- 9:22your life, pouring out the love of God
- 9:24in your heart to him, for one another.
- 9:28And that is a life that cannot be
- 9:30disappointed.
- 9:33For while we were still helpless,
- 9:36at that time,
- 9:38Christ died for the ungodly.
- 9:40That's the kind of love that God wants
- 9:42to pour out.
- 9:44That word pour means like a waterfall.
- 9:47It means a cascade of love.
- 9:50Oh, I want to help somebody. Oh, I want
- 9:52to serve somebody. Oh, I want to love
- 9:54somebody. Why?
- 9:56Because when I was helpless,
- 9:59he died for me.
- 10:00And I just want to love as I have been
- 10:02loved.
- 10:05For one will hardly die for a righteous
- 10:08man.
- 10:09Though perhaps for the good man someone
- 10:12would dare even to die.
- 10:15But God
- 10:16demonstrates his own love toward us
- 10:21in that while we were yet sinners,
- 10:25Christ died for us.
- 10:28He's saying Jesus didn't die for you
- 10:30when you started to walk in faith.
- 10:33He didn't die for you when you repented
- 10:35and acknowledged your sin. He didn't die
- 10:37for you when you became his servant and
- 10:39shared his love with others. He died for
- 10:41you when you were wretched and foolish
- 10:45and hopeless and helpless. He said, "I
- 10:48believe love can change them.
- 10:51I believe love can heal them."
- 10:53That's when he died for us.
- 10:55Much more then having now been justified
- 10:59by his blood,
- 11:01we shall be saved from the wrath of God
- 11:03through him.
- 11:04Now, the New American Standard gets it
- 11:06wrong here.
- 11:07The word of God is not in this phrase.
- 11:11It just means saved from the wrath.
- 11:14That wrath isn't God being mad at you.
- 11:16That wrath is just the place of
- 11:18independence that we walk to of our own
- 11:21will away from the presence of the Lord.
- 11:25For if while we were enemies,
- 11:29we were reconciled to God through the
- 11:32death of his son, much more having been
- 11:35reconciled, we shall be saved by his
- 11:38life.
- 11:39Now, what does this mean?
- 11:41What does it mean that while we were
- 11:42enemies, we were reconciled to God?
- 11:46That doesn't mean we were saved because
- 11:48the next word says we will be saved by
- 11:50his life. What it means is that our sins
- 11:54prevented us from coming into the courts
- 11:57of the Father.
- 11:58He was a great king, but our sin
- 12:00wouldn't let us get through the door
- 12:02into his presence. But through the blood
- 12:05of Jesus, a new and living way was
- 12:08opened so that we now have confident
- 12:10access by one spirit to one Father.
- 12:13So, we were reconciled in the sense that
- 12:15we could draw near. That's what
- 12:17reconciled means. We will be saved if we
- 12:21accept what he's done and live in what
- 12:23he's done through faith. So, let's read
- 12:26that again. For if, while we were
- 12:29enemies, we were reconciled, meaning God
- 12:32took away the barrier of our judgment,
- 12:34so that we could enter his presence,
- 12:37so much more having been reconciled, we
- 12:40shall be saved by his life.
- 12:47The resurrection power, the Holy Spirit
- 12:49coming into our lives, that which raised
- 12:52him from the dead, is what's going to
- 12:54keep us in this relationship of
- 12:56salvation with God.
- 12:58He removed the barrier, but we have to
- 13:01choose the life
- 13:04only this, but we also exalt in God
- 13:08through our Lord Jesus Christ, through
- 13:10whom we have now received the
- 13:13reconciliation.
- 13:15So, we were reconciled
- 13:17as if he paid our debt, but we didn't
- 13:20receive it. It didn't become ours
- 13:23until we have now received this
- 13:25reconciliation.
- 13:27Therefore, just as through just as
- 13:29through one man sin entered the world.
- 13:33What one man is he talking about?
- 13:36Adam.
- 13:37Through one man sin entered the world
- 13:40and death
- 13:42through sin.
- 13:46Sin is the bridge. Death is the vehicle
- 13:49that came across the bridge. And it
- 13:51happened through the choices of one man.
- 13:55Adam gave the devil reign over this
- 13:58earth so that he would become the god of
- 14:00this world, the prince of this age, the
- 14:02ruler of this world.
- 14:04And so death spread to all men
- 14:07because all sinned.
- 14:09For until the law sin was in the world,
- 14:12but sin is not imputed when there is no
- 14:15law.
- 14:16So he's saying we weren't accountable.
- 14:20We weren't judged for our transgression
- 14:21until the law, the the oracle of God
- 14:23showed us what it was, but it was
- 14:25already there.
- 14:27Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam
- 14:30until Moses
- 14:32even over those who had not sinned in
- 14:35the likeness of the offense of Adam, who
- 14:37is a type of him who was to come.
- 14:42But the free gift of God is not like the
- 14:45transgression.
- 14:47For if by the transgression of the one
- 14:51many died
- 14:53much more did the grace of God and the
- 14:57gift by grace of the one man Jesus
- 15:00Christ abound to many. So he's saying
- 15:04that sin is a dynamic that spread like a
- 15:07virus to everybody. Adam opened the
- 15:10gate, everybody's been sinning since
- 15:11then, and so death and condemnation is
- 15:14on everybody.
- 15:16From Adam until Moses, it's on
- 15:18everybody. Moses started a temporary
- 15:21season of expiation and atonement where
- 15:25we postpone the penalty to the cross
- 15:28reckoning it on animals but ultimately
- 15:30pointing toward Calvary.
- 15:32But he's saying
- 15:34that's what happened through the first
- 15:35Adam. But something very different
- 15:37happened through the second Adam.
- 15:39The very sin that contaminated everybody
- 15:44Jesus brought a life that's going to
- 15:46spread like a new virus.
- 15:49A virus of hope and love and life to
- 15:52everybody. So, he says, "But the free
- 15:54gift is not like the transgression. So,
- 15:56the gift from Jesus is not like the
- 15:58transgression of Adam. For if by the
- 16:00transgression of the one, many died,
- 16:02much more did the grace of God and the
- 16:05gift by the grace of the one man Jesus
- 16:07Christ abound to many."
- 16:10So, he's saying what Jesus did for you
- 16:13wants to grow in you. It wants to spread
- 16:16to you. He wants to be a power and
- 16:19influence of righteousness like Adam's
- 16:21sin was a power and influence toward
- 16:24transgression.
- 16:25The gift is not like that which came
- 16:28through the one who sinned. For on the
- 16:30one hand, the judgment arose from one
- 16:33transgression resulting in condemnation.
- 16:37But on the other hand, the free gift
- 16:39arose from many transgressions resulting
- 16:43in justification.
- 16:44So, he's saying
- 16:46all the sin in the world started with
- 16:47Adam.
- 16:48But all that sin invited Jesus.
- 16:52And Jesus' act of love
- 16:55of atonement is going to spread
- 16:56righteousness in the other direction.
- 17:00Look at this one.
- 17:01Verse 17. Very important verse. Look at
- 17:04this.
- 17:05For if by the transgression of the one
- 17:09death
- 17:11reigned through the one
- 17:14much more those who receive the
- 17:17abundance of grace
- 17:19and of the gift of righteousness
- 17:23will reign in life through the one Jesus
- 17:28Christ.
- 17:30He is saying that just like sin used to
- 17:32be your master, now righteousness,
- 17:35Jesus, is going to be your master. But
- 17:37what's important is he's told us that
- 17:41we're going to reign now in this life
- 17:44through Jesus Christ.
- 17:46And what is Why is that important?
- 17:48Because it's Paul telling us what kind
- 17:50of kingdom we should be expecting.
- 17:53Not a kingdom of chariots and horses,
- 17:55not a kingdom of tanks and guns, but a
- 17:58kingdom of power over sin.
- 18:01A kingdom of grace to overcome, to do
- 18:04what is right, taking dominion, not over
- 18:08the animals, but taking dominion over
- 18:10our own fallen nature, not by our own
- 18:12strength, but by the blood of Jesus
- 18:14Christ.
- 18:16Through many, through Jesus, life is
- 18:19going to reign.
- 18:21Righteousness will reign in life through
- 18:24Jesus Christ.
- 18:26Amen.
- 18:27So then, [music] as through one
- 18:28transgression there resulted
- 18:30condemnation to all men, even so through
- 18:32one act of righteousness there resulted
- 18:35justification of life to all men.
- 18:38One act of righteousness,
- 18:42we are justified.
- 18:43We are not justified because we did
- 18:45enough good things. We are justified if
- 18:48our faith in total trust and surrender
- 18:51is real.
- 18:52And thereby he imputes to us
- 18:55the full credit of what he paid for at
- 18:58Calvary.
- 19:00For through one man's disobedience, the
- 19:02many were made sinners. Even [music] so,
- 19:04through the obedience of one, the many
- 19:07will be made righteous.
- 19:10The law came in so that [music] the
- 19:12transgression would increase, but where
- 19:14sin increased, grace abounded all the
- 19:17more.
- 19:18He's talking about the grace that Jesus
- 19:20brought.
- 19:21So that as sin reigned in death, even so
- 19:24grace would reign through righteousness
- 19:29to eternal life through Jesus [music]
- 19:31Christ our Lord.
- 19:33Grace is supposed to take up dominion in
- 19:37our life.
- 19:39Grace doesn't excuse [music]
- 19:40us
- 19:42from obeying God.
- 19:43The grace of God that brings salvation
- 19:46teaches us to say no to ungodliness,
- 19:50yes to righteousness, to live soberly
- 19:52and godly in this present age. And that
- 19:55[music] when grace is talking to us like
- 19:57that, when grace is guiding us like
- 19:59that, Paul calls that grace
- 20:01>> [music]
- 20:01>> reigning
- 20:03in our lives.
- 20:04And when grace is reigning, we're part
- 20:07of the kingdom of God. And until it is
- 20:09reigning, we're not.
- 20:11Dominion over sin and the flesh [music]
- 20:14through the grace of the Holy Spirit.
- 20:17That's what the kingdom of God is all
- 20:18about.
- 20:19And that's a journey. It's a journey
- 20:22that he described [music] in the early
- 20:23verses that progresses through
- 20:25tribulation and perseverance and
- 20:27character and hope and love.
- 20:33>> [music]
