- 0:00Romans chapter 16. This is Paul's
- 0:02[music] final chapter in the letter to
- 0:04the Romans.
- 0:07I commend to you our sister Phoebe,
- 0:10who is a servant of the church which is
- 0:13at
- 0:13>> [music]
- 0:13>> Cenchrea.
- 0:15That you receive her in the Lord in a
- 0:18manner worthy of the saints and that you
- 0:20help her in whatever matter she may have
- 0:23need [music] of you.
- 0:25For she herself has also been a helper
- 0:27of many and of myself [music]
- 0:30as well.
- 0:32So there's a sister in the church who
- 0:34has ministered faithfully with Paul and
- 0:36been an
- 0:37a servant in supporting the ministry,
- 0:40>> [music]
- 0:40>> probably in practical matters, but we
- 0:42don't know.
- 0:44Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow
- 0:46workers [music] in Christ Jesus.
- 0:49I don't know if that's Priscilla,
- 0:50another version of Priscilla, it may be.
- 0:53Who for my life risked their own necks,
- 0:57to whom not only do I give thanks, but
- 0:59also all the churches of the Gentiles.
- 1:03Also greet the church that is in their
- 1:05house.
- 1:07Greet Epaenetus,
- 1:09my beloved,
- 1:11who is the first convert to Christ from
- 1:13Asia. [music]
- 1:15Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you.
- 1:18Greet
- 1:20Andronicus
- 1:21and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow
- 1:24prisoners, who are outstanding among the
- 1:27apostles,
- 1:29who also were in Christ before me.
- 1:32Greet Ampliatus,
- 1:34>> [music]
- 1:34>> my beloved in the Lord.
- 1:36Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in
- 1:39Christ,
- 1:40and [music] Stachys, my beloved.
- 1:43Greet Apelles,
- 1:45the approved in Christ.
- 1:48Greet those who are of the household of
- 1:50Aristobulus.
- 1:52Greet Herodion, my kinsman.
- 1:55Greet those of the household of
- 1:57Narcissus, who are in the Lord.
- 2:00Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, workers in
- 2:03the Lord. Greet Persis, the beloved, who
- 2:06has worked hard in the Lord. Greet
- 2:09Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also
- 2:12his [music] mother and mine.
- 2:16Greet Asyncritus,
- 2:18Phlegon, Hermes,
- 2:21Patrobas, Hermas, and the brethren with
- 2:24them.
- 2:25Greet Philologus and Julia,
- 2:28Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and
- 2:32all the saints who are with them.
- 2:34Greet one another with a holy kiss.
- 2:38All the churches of Christ greet you.
- 2:41Now,
- 2:42I urge you, brethren,
- 2:44keep your eye on those who cause
- 2:47dissensions
- 2:49and hindrances,
- 2:51contrary to the teaching which you
- 2:54learned,
- 2:55and turn away from them.
- 2:58For such men are slaves
- 3:02not of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 3:05but of their own appetites,
- 3:07and by their smooth and flattering
- 3:09speech, they deceive the hearts of the
- 3:13unsuspecting.
- 3:16So, he gives this incredible greeting of
- 3:18all the people he knows in their church,
- 3:21all the people from him who care about
- 3:24their church. He finishes by telling
- 3:26them to greet one another, to just go
- 3:29around and give each other a hug, to
- 3:31show affection to one another.
- 3:34And then he says, "Watch out for those
- 3:38who cause dissensions and hindrances.
- 3:43Who, when the church is starting to
- 3:45progress,
- 3:47drop a problem in front of it.
- 3:49Put a pothole in the road. Put a
- 3:52stumbling block in the way.
- 3:54And he says the reason they do this is
- 3:56because they are slaves not to the Lord
- 4:01but to their own appetites.
- 4:05Their own bellies.
- 4:07What they want.
- 4:09For the report of your obedience
- 4:13has reached to all.
- 4:16Paul starts Romans 1 by saying that God
- 4:19gave him the ministry of stewarding the
- 4:22gospel to bring about the obedience of
- 4:26faith. And now he finishes the book of
- 4:29Romans by saying the report of your
- 4:32obedience
- 4:34has reached to all. Therefore, I am
- 4:37rejoicing over you.
- 4:39But I want you to be wise in what is
- 4:41good and innocent in what is evil.
- 4:45The God of peace will soon crush Satan
- 4:50under [clears throat] your feet.
- 4:52That's dominion. That's what it looks
- 4:55like when we are freed from the patterns
- 4:58of the world that he spoke of in Romans
- 5:0012 through the renewing of our mind
- 5:02where the patterns live and we start to
- 5:05live in the patterns of the kingdom that
- 5:07he enumerates afterward.
- 5:09The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
- 5:12Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you.
- 5:16And so do Lucius and Jason and
- 5:18Sosipater, my kinsmen.
- 5:21I, Tertius, who write this letter, greet
- 5:24you in the Lord. So, the letter is
- 5:26actually scribed by the hand of a
- 5:29servant of Paul even though Paul is the
- 5:31one dictating it.
- 5:33Gaius, host to me and to the whole
- 5:36church, greets you. Erastus, the city
- 5:40treasurer, greets you.
- 5:42And Quartus, the brother.
- 5:46The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
- 5:48with you all. Amen.
- 5:51Now,
- 5:53to him who is able to establish you
- 5:57according to my gospel
- 5:59and the preaching of Jesus Christ,
- 6:02according to the revelation of the
- 6:04mystery
- 6:05which has been kept secret for long
- 6:08[music] ages past,
- 6:10but now is manifested,
- 6:12and by the scriptures [music]
- 6:14of the prophets, according to the
- 6:15commandment of the eternal God, has been
- 6:18[music] made known to all the nations,
- 6:21leading to the obedience of faith.
- 6:26To the only wise God, through Jesus
- 6:28Christ, be glory forever.
- 6:32Amen. So,
- 6:34he ends the whole [music] thing
- 6:36by saying
- 6:38that the great mystery, the great
- 6:39gospel, the law and the prophets,
- 6:42the whole of what God has done [music]
- 6:44and is doing
- 6:46is to bring about the obedience of
- 6:49faith.
- 6:51If you can separate [music] the word
- 6:53obedience from the word faith, you do
- 6:56not understand the teaching of Paul.
- 6:59But if you understand [music] faith
- 7:01as the response of love to the word of
- 7:05life,
- 7:06and you understand [music] that response
- 7:08as a lifestyle, a journey,
- 7:11a walk
- 7:13of living out your salvation, living out
- 7:17your faith in Christ, then you
- 7:19understand why he wrote this letter.
- 7:21And then, [music] to the only wise God
- 7:23through Jesus Christ, there will come
- 7:25glory from your life, from your church,
- 7:28from your way.
- 7:48>> Mhm.
