- 0:00Romans chapter 15 [music]
- 0:01verse 1.
- 0:04Now we who are strong ought to bear the
- 0:07weakness of those without [music]
- 0:09strength and not just please ourselves.
- 0:15This is Paul continuing the thought that
- 0:18we need to live for love and not be so
- 0:21focused on our liberties that we cause
- 0:22[music]
- 0:23weaker people to stumble.
- 0:26Not just live for ourselves. Each of us
- 0:29is [music] to please his neighbor
- 0:32for his good to his edification.
- 0:37For even Christ did not please himself,
- 0:39but as it is written,
- 0:41"The reproaches of those who reproached
- 0:44you fell on me."
- 0:47For whatever was written in earlier
- 0:49times was written for our instruction,
- 0:51so that through perseverance and the
- 0:54encouragement of the scripture, we might
- 0:56have hope.
- 0:58Now may the God who gives perseverance
- 1:01and encouragement grant you to be of the
- 1:04same mind with one another according to
- 1:07Christ Jesus.
- 1:10So that with one accord, you may with
- 1:12one voice glorify the God and Father of
- 1:16our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:19Paul's whole point is live for love.
- 1:23Do not live just for your liberty.
- 1:26Do not make this just about yourself.
- 1:29You're part of a community and if you
- 1:31ask the question as an individual only,
- 1:34you're missing the point.
- 1:37It's an important question, but you're
- 1:39part of a community. Live for each
- 1:41other.
- 1:43Therefore, accept one another just as
- 1:45Christ also accepted us to the glory of
- 1:48God.
- 1:49For I say that Christ has become a
- 1:52servant to the circumcision on behalf of
- 1:55the truth of God to confirm the promises
- 1:58given to the fathers.
- 2:00And for the Gentiles to glorify God for
- 2:03his mercy, as it is written, "Therefore,
- 2:06I will give praise to you among the
- 2:08Gentiles, and I will sing to your name."
- 2:10Again, he says, "Rejoice, oh Gentiles,
- 2:14with his people." And again, "Praise the
- 2:16Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the
- 2:19peoples praise him." And again, Isaiah
- 2:21says,
- 2:22"There shall come the root of Jesse,
- 2:26and he who arises to rule over the
- 2:28Gentiles, in him shall the Gentiles
- 2:31hope."
- 2:33So, Paul is still thinking in terms of
- 2:36God blessing the Gentiles who were shown
- 2:39mercy because of the Jews' rejection,
- 2:42and he's still thinking in terms of them
- 2:44being a witness to the Jews.
- 2:48Now, may the God of hope fill you with
- 2:52all joy and peace in believing,
- 2:56so that you will abound in hope by the
- 2:59power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:02And concerning you, my brethren, I
- 3:05myself also am convinced that you
- 3:07yourselves are full of goodness,
- 3:10filled with all knowledge, and able also
- 3:13to admonish one another. But,
- 3:16I have written very boldly to you on
- 3:19some points, so as to remind you again
- 3:22because of the grace that was given me
- 3:25from God
- 3:26to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the
- 3:29Gentiles, ministering as a priest the
- 3:32gospel of God, so that my offering of
- 3:36the Gentiles may become acceptable,
- 3:39sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
- 3:42Therefore, so Paul is saying, "I know
- 3:44you've got liberty.
- 3:46I know you've got knowledge. I know
- 3:48you've got goodness. You've got the
- 3:50right intentions. But, God also made me
- 3:53a priest to serve you, His Grace, and
- 3:55that's why I've written you. Therefore,
- 3:58in Christ Jesus, I have found reason for
- 4:00boasting in things pertaining to God.
- 4:04I'm not going to boast about who I am.
- 4:05I'm not going to boast about what I did,
- 4:07but I'm going to boast in Christ about
- 4:09what pertains to God, what He's done.
- 4:13For I will not presume to speak of
- 4:14anything except what Christ has
- 4:16accomplished through me,
- 4:19resulting in the obedience of the
- 4:22Gentiles by word and deed.
- 4:26So, what what did God accomplish in him?
- 4:29God accomplished something in him
- 4:32resulting in the obedience of the
- 4:35Gentiles in word and deed,
- 4:39in the power of signs and wonders, in
- 4:42the power of the Spirit, so that from
- 4:45Jerusalem and round about as far as
- 4:48Iconium, I have fully preached the
- 4:51Gospel of Christ.
- 4:54What does the Gospel of Christ produce?
- 4:56It produces the obedience of the
- 4:59Gentiles in word and deed,
- 5:02in signs and wonders, in the power of
- 5:05the Spirit, from Jerusalem to Iconium.
- 5:08That's what fully preaching the Gospel
- 5:11looks like, obedience in word and deed,
- 5:14power of the Spirit, signs and wonders.
- 5:17Anything else is not the Gospel that
- 5:19Paul is preaching.
- 5:21And thus, I aspired to preach the Gospel
- 5:24not where Christ was already named, so
- 5:27that I would not build on another man's
- 5:29foundation,
- 5:30but as it is written,
- 5:32they who had no news of him shall see,
- 5:36and they who have not heard shall
- 5:38understand.
- 5:40For this reason, I have often been
- 5:42prevented from coming [music] to you,
- 5:44but now, with no further place for me in
- 5:48these regions, and since I have had for
- 5:50many years a longing to come to you,
- 5:53whenever I go to Spain, [music] for I
- 5:54hope to see you in passing,
- 5:57and to be helped on my way there by you,
- 6:01when I have first enjoyed your company
- 6:03for a while.
- 6:04>> [music]
- 6:05>> But now, I am going to Jerusalem,
- 6:07serving the saints. So, what is Paul
- 6:09saying here? He's saying, "I didn't want
- 6:10to build on another man's foundation,
- 6:12and that's why I didn't come to you,
- 6:13because he apparently didn't start the
- 6:15church in Rome. Somebody else did."
- 6:18But he's saying,
- 6:20"I've longed to come to you for a while,
- 6:22and so now I feel like it's time for me
- 6:23to minister these insights to you."
- 6:26For Macedonia and Achaia have been
- 6:29[music] pleased to make a contribution
- 6:31for the poor among the saints in
- 6:32Jerusalem. Yes, they were pleased to do
- 6:34so,
- 6:35and they were indebted to them.
- 6:37For if the Gentiles have shared in their
- 6:39spiritual things, they are indebted to
- 6:42minister to them also in material
- 6:44things.
- 6:46So, he's saying, "It We need to care for
- 6:48each other. If we've received
- 6:50spiritually, it's time that we give
- 6:52financially, that we support each other
- 6:55in practical things. Therefore,
- 6:57when I have finished this, and have put
- 6:59my seal on this fruit [music] of theirs,
- 7:02I will go on by way of you to Spain.
- 7:05I know that when I come to you, I will
- 7:08come in the fullness of the blessing of
- 7:09Christ.
- 7:11Now, I urge you, brethren, by our Lord
- 7:13Jesus Christ and by the love of the
- 7:15Spirit,
- 7:16to strive together [music]
- 7:18with me in your prayers to God for me,
- 7:23You can participate [music]
- 7:24with me, he's saying. You can strive
- 7:26with me
- 7:27by praying for me.
- 7:30Prayers to God for me, that I may be
- 7:32rescued [music] from those who are
- 7:34disobedient in Judea,
- 7:37and that my service for Jerusalem may
- 7:39prove acceptable to the saints,
- 7:42so that I may come to you in joy by the
- 7:45will of God and find refreshing rest in
- 7:48your company.
- 7:49Now the God of peace be with you all.
- 7:52Amen.
