- 0:00So, in Romans 9 and 10 and 11,
- 0:04Paul is focusing entirely on
- 0:08his burden to see his Jewish family, the
- 0:13Jewish people, saved [music]
- 0:14in Christ.
- 0:16And
- 0:18you could say that
- 0:20some of the themes that are emerging for
- 0:23us is [music] that God gave a certain
- 0:27kind of priority, emphasis, focus,
- 0:30[music] and election to the Jewish
- 0:33people that did not result in their
- 0:36salvation, but it was actually to put a
- 0:39root in the ground that all the nations
- 0:42of the earth would be grafted into and
- 0:45saved [music] by when Jesus came.
- 0:48And then his concern becomes, "Okay, now
- 0:52that the Gentiles are grafted into the
- 0:55root of Judaism and are living by faith
- 0:58in Christ, how do they become the people
- 1:01that help the Jews find faith?"
- 1:04So, Paul's whole discourse in Romans 9
- 1:07creates a dilemma that he solves in
- 1:09[music] Romans 10. And the dilemma is
- 1:11he's telling them that salvation is
- 1:13through Jesus.
- 1:14And so, he addresses the elephant in the
- 1:17room. Don't say in your heart that Jesus
- 1:19is so high up in heaven that you can't
- 1:21interact with him or that he's so far in
- 1:23the grave that you can't relate to him
- 1:26because Jesus is still here through the
- 1:28rhema, the preached word of his people.
- 1:31And that's the whole gist of his [music]
- 1:33teaching
- 1:34in Romans
- 1:3610. And he's saying he [clears throat]
- 1:38finishes by saying that
- 1:40God was sought by a people who did not
- 1:42know him and that he was going to
- 1:44provoke the Jews to anger through the
- 1:47Gentiles. So, Romans 11 picks up on this
- 1:50theme.
- 1:52He says in in the last verse of Romans
- 1:5510, he says, "But as for Israel, he
- 1:57says, 'All the day long I have stretched
- 1:59out my hands to a disobedient and
- 2:02obstinate people.'"
- 2:05Romans 11, verse 1.
- 2:07"I say then, God has not rejected his
- 2:10people, has he?
- 2:13May it never be.
- 2:16For I, too,
- 2:18am an Israelite,
- 2:20a descendant of Abraham,
- 2:22of the tribe of Benjamin.
- 2:25God has not rejected his people
- 2:28whom he foreknew.
- 2:31Or do you not know what the scripture
- 2:33says in the passage about Elijah?
- 2:37How he pleads with God against Israel?
- 2:40'Lord, they have killed your prophets.
- 2:43They have torn down your altars, and I
- 2:46alone am left, and they are seeking my
- 2:50life.'
- 2:52But what is the divine response to him?
- 2:56'I have kept for myself 7,000 men who
- 3:01have not bowed the knee to Baal.'
- 3:05In the same way then, there has also
- 3:08come to be at the present time
- 3:10a remnant according to God's gracious
- 3:14choice.
- 3:16So there is a natural choice, there is a
- 3:19natural election, and there is a
- 3:22gracious choice, there is a gracious
- 3:24salvific election.
- 3:27And Paul is saying here
- 3:29that God has not rejected his people
- 3:31because there's a remnant.
- 3:34As long as there are Jews anywhere who
- 3:38are walking in faith,
- 3:41then God's continuity of covenant with
- 3:45even the Jewish people stands.
- 3:48And he's saying that he, Paul, feels
- 3:50much like Elijah felt when said, "Lord,
- 3:53I alone am left, and now they seek my
- 3:56life." But Paul says that he's reminding
- 3:58himself that he, Paul, is an Israelite.
- 4:02He's of the tribe of Benjamin. And so,
- 4:04all the promises of God are squeezed
- 4:07down to those who will walk in faith,
- 4:11the remnant. This is the principle that
- 4:14was true of Job
- 4:17when the Lord is challenged by Satan.
- 4:20When Satan implies that all the earth is
- 4:23under his dominion, the Lord says, "Have
- 4:25you considered my servant Job? There is
- 4:28no one like him in all the earth."
- 4:30God's plan marches on so long as there's
- 4:34a remnant, even if it's one man named
- 4:37Job or if it's 7,000 who have not bowed
- 4:40the knee to Baal. Paul is saying that
- 4:42all the promises made to Israel are
- 4:45still faithful, and God has not
- 4:47abandoned them so long as there is a
- 4:49remnant. And this is according to God's
- 4:51gracious choice.
- 4:53But that choice, that gracious election,
- 4:58may be
- 5:00accepted by a small fraction, but it is
- 5:03[clears throat] extended to all. And all
- 5:06those who are not accepting it can still
- 5:09receive it, and that's what we're going
- 5:10to see in the coming verses.
- 5:13But if it is by grace, it is no longer
- 5:16on the basis of works. Otherwise, grace
- 5:18is no longer grace.
- 5:20So, let me say it like this.
- 5:22If it is by grace in accepting who Jesus
- 5:26is and walking in relationship with him,
- 5:28then it's no longer whether you're
- 5:30circumcised or keep the Levitical law.
- 5:33That's what he's saying. The works that
- 5:34he's talking about here do not preclude
- 5:38the works of grace that God does through
- 5:41the Holy Spirit. By the grace of God, I
- 5:43am what I am, and his grace toward me
- 5:45did not prove vain, for I worked harder
- 5:47than them all, but it was not I, but the
- 5:49grace of God that was in me. There are
- 5:51works of grace, and there are works of
- 5:54the law, works of the flesh, works of
- 5:56do-goodism. And Paul is saying that
- 5:59those works of circumcision and
- 6:02ceremonial law-keeping, they don't
- 6:04accomplish anything.
- 6:06But grace is what matters.
- 6:08What then? What Israel
- 6:11is seeking,
- 6:13it has not obtained.
- 6:16But those who were chosen obtained it.
- 6:20And the rest were hardened.
- 6:23Just as it is written, God gave them a
- 6:25spirit of stupor,
- 6:27eyes to see and ears to hear down to
- 6:30this very day.
- 6:32Now, does that mean that God is
- 6:34responsible for making them hard in
- 6:37their hearts? That God caused them to
- 6:39sin? That would contradict scripture.
- 6:42The Apostle James writes,
- 6:44God is tempted by no one, and he will
- 6:47cause no one to be tempted. God does not
- 6:51give us a spirit of stupor in the sense
- 6:54that he makes us have that bad reaction.
- 6:57Instead, he gives us an opportunity.
- 7:01He He gives the whole Garden of Eden to
- 7:04Adam and Eve, and their own proclivity
- 7:07toward transgression leads them into it.
- 7:11But he doesn't give them the spirit of
- 7:13stupor in the sense that they didn't
- 7:14have it without him.
- 7:16It's just that he gave them an
- 7:17opportunity to to come into life, and
- 7:20they chose darkness rather than light
- 7:22because their deeds were evil.
- 7:24And that's the verdict, that's the
- 7:26separation. So, in a sense, God gave
- 7:28them a spirit of stupor,
- 7:30but not by giving them sin, because God
- 7:33does not cause anyone to be tempted. He
- 7:35does not make anyone sin. The Bible's
- 7:37unequivocal about that.
- 7:39These are
- 7:40causative verbs that can be confusing
- 7:44that make it sound like God is more
- 7:45active than sometimes he is. The Hebrews
- 7:49the Hebrew language says things like
- 7:51that in the days of Pharaoh the Hebrew
- 7:54midwives caused the babies to live. But
- 7:57they didn't actually cause them to live.
- 7:59They just refused to obey the command to
- 8:01kill them. And yet in Hebrew it sounds
- 8:04like they caused them to live.
- 8:07And in the same way God, when he gives
- 8:09us over to the fruit of our own
- 8:11fantasies, when he turns us over to be
- 8:14filled with our own ways, it can sound
- 8:17like he's the one acting and doing the
- 8:19aggression, when in fact he's just
- 8:21letting us go where we determine to go.
- 8:25And David says, "Let their table become
- 8:29a snare and a trap and a stumbling block
- 8:33and a retribution to them. Let their
- 8:35eyes be darkened to see not and bend
- 8:39their backs forever."
- 8:42So this is again
- 8:44an insight into how this stupor
- 8:47and this snare happens. What does David
- 8:50say causes them to be snared? Let their
- 8:53table become their snare.
- 8:56This is the idea that
- 8:59religious people are trapped in the
- 9:02pride of their provision.
- 9:05Because they know that God prepared a
- 9:08table before them in the presence of
- 9:09their enemies, they don't hunger and
- 9:12thirst for righteousness anymore. And
- 9:14the gifts of God, when seen wrongly, can
- 9:18become a trap and a snare. Let their
- 9:21table become a snare.
- 9:23So God didn't cause the sin. He put a
- 9:25table in front of them. But the way they
- 9:27looked at the table, God's gifts became
- 9:30a substitute for God himself.
- 9:33God's past grace became a substitute for
- 9:36walking in grace today.
- 9:38And this is the transgression.
- 9:41I say then, they did not stumble so as
- 9:44to fall, did they? May it never be.
- 9:48Paul is asking, did they reject God so
- 9:51as to be hopelessly damned? No.
- 9:55They did not stumble so as to fall out
- 9:58of the calling that is still hanging
- 10:00over their life.
- 10:02That calling is still there and they can
- 10:03still walk in it today.
- 10:07They did not stumble so as to fall, did
- 10:09they? May it never be.
- 10:12But by their transgression, salvation
- 10:15has come to the Gentiles to make them
- 10:18jealous.
- 10:20So, God's purpose for the Jewish people
- 10:22is still there.
- 10:25Their transgression didn't remove his
- 10:27calling.
- 10:29It still stands.
- 10:31And yet, because they rejected God's
- 10:35grace,
- 10:37God used even that
- 10:40to accomplish an opportunity of
- 10:42salvation to the Gentiles.
- 10:44When did Paul start preaching the gospel
- 10:46to the Gentiles?
- 10:49When the Jews rejected his message.
- 10:52So, in this we see that their rejection,
- 10:55the Jewish people rejecting the gospel,
- 10:58was actually an opportunity of grace for
- 11:00the Gentiles.
- 11:02And even that,
- 11:04the maturity of a Gentile church, is
- 11:07going to provoke the Jews to come back
- 11:10to what they rejected. So, God is
- 11:12saying, the calling on the Jewish people
- 11:14stands.
- 11:16But when they reject, I'm going to go
- 11:18build something that's going to be so
- 11:19powerful they can't reject it anymore.
- 11:23So, his whole point is, I'm sticking
- 11:25with you. I'm going to keep reaching
- 11:27out.
- 11:28And it's up to you whether you're going
- 11:29to accept it or not, but I still have a
- 11:31plan and a purpose for you.
- 11:36>> [clears throat]
- 11:38>> I say then, they did not stumble so as
- 11:41to fall, did they?
- 11:43May it never be.
- 11:45But by their transgression, salvation
- 11:47has come to the Gentiles
- 11:50to make them, the Jewish people, jealous
- 11:54by what the Gentiles become through
- 11:56grace,
- 11:58apart from the law.
- 12:00Now, if their transgression is riches
- 12:02for the world,
- 12:04and their failure is riches for the
- 12:07Gentiles,
- 12:09how much more
- 12:10will their fulfillment be?
- 12:13So, the calling is still on them.
- 12:16The calling is still there. They can
- 12:18still become what God has envisioned
- 12:22from Abraham to this present day.
- 12:25And when they become that,
- 12:27their
- 12:28acceptance of Jesus, their repentance,
- 12:31their life in the spirit and grace, is
- 12:34going to be more
- 12:36for the world and the Gentiles than all
- 12:38of their rejection ever could have been.
- 12:41How much more will their fulfillment be?
- 12:44But I am speaking to you who are
- 12:46Gentiles.
- 12:48In as much then as I am
- 12:51an apostle of Gentiles,
- 12:53I magnify my ministry.
- 12:57Why?
- 12:58If somehow
- 13:00I might move to jealousy my fellow
- 13:04countrymen and save some of them.
- 13:09So, Paul's saying, "God called me to be
- 13:12an apostle to the Gentiles, and I'm
- 13:14going to make this garden so fruitful
- 13:17that the fruitless will look over the
- 13:18wall,
- 13:19and even if some say, 'I want to be part
- 13:21of that,'
- 13:23then I prove that I'm not just an
- 13:24apostle to the Gentiles, but I am a
- 13:27witness to the Jews of what salvation is
- 13:30supposed to be.
- 13:33For if their rejection is the
- 13:35reconciliation of the world, what will
- 13:37their acceptance be but life from the
- 13:40dead?
- 13:43So in this, he repeats what he said two
- 13:45verses earlier,
- 13:47that their grafting back in will mean
- 13:49more for the Gentiles than their
- 13:52severance.
- 13:53And here he says, "If their rejection
- 13:56brought reconciliation for the world,
- 13:59what will their acceptance be but life
- 14:02from the dead?" What does that mean? It
- 14:04means that it will be life for from the
- 14:06dead for the Jews who repent and accept
- 14:09Jesus as Messiah.
- 14:11But it also means something else.
- 14:14It means that when they start coming
- 14:17en masse,
- 14:19that's going to be life from the dead
- 14:22for the Gentile church. That will mark
- 14:25the end-time revival, revitalization
- 14:30of the church at large.
- 14:32Because their severance was grace for
- 14:35the Gentiles, and their reintegration
- 14:38will also be life from the dead for the
- 14:40Gentiles.
- 14:41They're going to bring something to the
- 14:43church
- 14:44that's going to help bring it back to
- 14:45life.
- 14:46They're going to bring a simplicity and
- 14:48coherence to the understanding of God
- 14:51that we have lost in the Gentile church.
- 14:53They're going to bring a sense of
- 14:54community and being a people that we
- 14:57have lost in the Gentile church.
- 15:00They're going to bring a value and a
- 15:02history and an ethic of suffering that
- 15:05we have lost in the Gentile church.
- 15:07They're going to bring an exuberance and
- 15:09dynamism of Davidic praise and worship
- 15:13that we have lost in the Gentile church.
- 15:15They're going to bring a tradition of
- 15:18wisdom as life and wholeness that
- 15:21replaces the fragmentary analytical
- 15:24wisdom of the Greeks
- 15:26that the church has supplanted. They're
- 15:28going to bring a lot of things that are
- 15:31essential
- 15:32that have been
- 15:34processed out of the church in its
- 15:37over-processed Gentile iteration. It's
- 15:40going to be life from the dead.
- 15:42If the first piece of dough is holy, the
- 15:46lump is also. And if the root is holy,
- 15:49the branches are too.
- 15:52But if some of the branches were broken
- 15:54off
- 15:55and you, being a wild olive
- 15:58were grafted in among them
- 16:00>> [clears throat]
- 16:01>> and became partaker with them of the
- 16:05rich root of the olive tree
- 16:09do not be arrogant
- 16:11toward the branches.
- 16:13But if you are arrogant, remember
- 16:16that it is not you who supports the
- 16:18root, but the root supports you.
- 16:22So Paul is saying to the Gentiles you
- 16:26don't have salvation except through
- 16:30the covenant of promise that comes
- 16:33through Abraham and the remnant.
- 16:36And yeah, branches were broken off of
- 16:39that salvation. And when they were
- 16:41broken off, the gospel came to the
- 16:43Gentiles. Praise God. But don't be
- 16:45arrogant.
- 16:47You don't support the root, the root
- 16:49undergirds and supports you.
- 16:52Your whole faith in Jesus taps back into
- 16:56the soil of Abraham and Moses and all of
- 17:00those, David and the rest, who have
- 17:02walked by faith
- 17:04until now. So don't be arrogant, he's
- 17:07saying. Now, I want you to listen. Is
- 17:10Paul giving us a Calvinistic
- 17:13determinism in this? No. He's placing
- 17:16the responsibility squarely on the
- 17:18individual because the root is
- 17:21predestined, but the branch is not.
- 17:24And if you stay in the root, you're
- 17:26predestined with it. But if you sever
- 17:28yourself through arrogance, you're going
- 17:30to be lost.
- 17:31But even if you are lost, you can be
- 17:33grafted back in because the root is
- 17:36predestined. And the predestined promise
- 17:39of God attaches to the promise of those
- 17:42who are born of the spirit. That's the
- 17:44key. Here we go.
- 17:48Do not be arrogant toward the branches,
- 17:50but if you are arrogant, remember that
- 17:52it is not you who supports the root, but
- 17:54the root supports you. You will say
- 17:56then, branches were broken off so that I
- 17:59might be grafted in.
- 18:02Quite right. They were broken off
- 18:06for [snorts] their unbelief.
- 18:12They weren't broken off because in the
- 18:13secret councils of heaven, like Mingley,
- 18:16Joseph Mingley, God went, "Heaven,
- 18:19hell."
- 18:20No.
- 18:21They were broken off for their unbelief.
- 18:25But you stand
- 18:28by your faith.
- 18:30He doesn't say you stand by God's
- 18:33choice.
- 18:35That's partially true, but God's choice
- 18:37is his predestination of the root,
- 18:41which is Christ.
- 18:42The root of Jesse. Amen.
- 18:45But you stand by your faith. Do not be
- 18:49conceited,
- 18:51but fear.
- 18:53Did Paul just tell us to be cautious?
- 18:57Did he just tell us to be
- 18:59fearful? Mhm.
- 19:01Mhm. Because unlike blinded evangelical
- 19:05Christians, he doesn't think faith is a
- 19:08static thing.
- 19:10He thinks it's an ongoing relationship
- 19:12of trust with God through the spirit.
- 19:15So, he's telling them, "Don't be
- 19:16arrogant, but fear.
- 19:19Don't be conceited. Conceited assumes
- 19:22that your place in the tree
- 19:24is secured, that you don't have to keep
- 19:27your faith, that you don't have to bear
- 19:29fruit, that no branches can be cut off."
- 19:32Isn't this what Jesus said in John 15?
- 19:36That every branch that does not bear
- 19:38fruit is cut off.
- 19:41But the branches that do bear fruit,
- 19:42they're pruned. Everybody gets cut.
- 19:45Everybody suffers the blade,
- 19:48but some suffer to make them more
- 19:50fruitful. Others suffer because they've
- 19:52lost faith and they're no longer bearing
- 19:54fruit at all.
- 19:56It's only by faith that we can please
- 19:59God. This is the victory that overcomes
- 20:01the world, our faith.
- 20:04Without faith, it's impossible to please
- 20:05God.
- 20:06Which is to say, without faith, it's
- 20:08impossible to bear fruit.
- 20:10So, he's saying, "Don't be conceited.
- 20:12Don't act like you can't be cut off.
- 20:15Do not be conceited, but fear. For if
- 20:18God did not spare the natural branches,
- 20:21he will not spare you, either."
- 20:27Behold then the kindness and the
- 20:29severity of God.
- 20:32To those who fell, severity.
- 20:34But to you,
- 20:36God's kindness,
- 20:38if you continue in his kindness.
- 20:42Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
- 20:49You will be cut off if you don't
- 20:51continue in what God gave you.
- 20:54This is not eternal security.
- 20:57This is caution. This is the fear of the
- 21:00Lord.
- 21:03And they also,
- 21:04if they do not continue in their
- 21:06unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is
- 21:11able to graft them in again.
- 21:14So, this is not based on whether God's
- 21:17licking his finger and putting it in the
- 21:18wind and deciding whether you're fodder
- 21:20for hell or
- 21:21a vessel for heaven. That's not what
- 21:23this is at all.
- 21:25This is God saying, "I've given you
- 21:27every chance. I've given you a root.
- 21:30I've given you a predestined people.
- 21:32I've given you a predestined family.
- 21:35I've given you the predestined Jesus,
- 21:37the predestined body of Christ, and that
- 21:40body of Christ is eternally secure.
- 21:44But, your membership in it is not.
- 21:47Nope.
- 21:48You are either a branch that continues
- 21:50in faith, pleases God, and bears fruit,
- 21:54or you're going to be cut off.
- 21:57Therefore, do not be conceited,
- 21:59complacent, apathetic,
- 22:02arrogant, but fear.
- 22:05Have a fear of God,
- 22:07so that the knife will just cut off what
- 22:09is dead on you instead of cutting you
- 22:11off from the body of Christ.
- 22:14And then he says, "They also,
- 22:16if they don't continue in their
- 22:17unbelief,
- 22:20they will be grafted in again."
- 22:24They're out because they don't have
- 22:25faith, and as soon as they have faith,
- 22:27they're back in.
- 22:28Does that sound like God's willy-nilly
- 22:30choice, or does that sound like it's up
- 22:33to us whether we're going to respond to
- 22:35the word with faith?
- 22:38They will be grafted in again, for God
- 22:40is able to graft them in again.
- 22:43For, if you were cut off from what is by
- 22:47nature a wild olive tree,
- 22:51and were grafted contrary to nature into
- 22:54a cultivated olive tree,
- 22:57how much more will these, who were the
- 22:59natural branches, be grafted into their
- 23:01own olive tree.
- 23:03I want to draw to your attention that he
- 23:05calls Israel
- 23:07the natural branches.
- 23:09They had a natural
- 23:11predestination, a natural election.
- 23:15And he's saying, "Listen, you guys were
- 23:18part of a tree that was condemned to
- 23:20hell.
- 23:22The Gentile tree is predestined to hell,
- 23:25and it still is.
- 23:27But God took his knife
- 23:29and cut us off of the tree of the nation
- 23:32and family
- 23:34that was leading us to hell, and he
- 23:35grafted us in to the tree and nation and
- 23:38family
- 23:39and promise made to Abraham that is
- 23:42predestined in Christ.
- 23:44So, stay part of the right tree."
- 23:48And he says, "These branches that were
- 23:49cut off, they're natural branches.
- 23:51They're going to have an easier time
- 23:53being grafted in than you would than you
- 23:54did as Gentiles. So, don't don't get
- 23:56arrogant.
- 24:00For I do not want you, brethren, to be
- 24:02uninformed of this mystery
- 24:06so that you will not be wise in your own
- 24:08estimation.
- 24:10That a partial hardening
- 24:13has happened to Israel
- 24:15until the fullness of the Gentiles has
- 24:18come in.
- 24:21Now, that is a phrase that is very
- 24:24specific,
- 24:25and it takes us all the way back
- 24:29to Luke 21:24.
- 24:33Do you remember what Jesus said in Luke?
- 24:35He said that Jerusalem,
- 24:38remember the the city he wept over
- 24:40because they didn't know what would make
- 24:42for their peace? Faith is what would
- 24:44make for their peace.
- 24:46Walking in his spirit, accepting him as
- 24:48Messiah would have made for their peace,
- 24:51but Jerusalem of peace, city of peace,
- 24:53didn't know what would make for for
- 24:55peace.
- 24:56They couldn't say, "Blessed is he who
- 24:57comes in the name of the Lord. That's
- 24:59what would have made for their peace.
- 25:01Amen. So, Jesus wept over him and he
- 25:03said Jerusalem was going to be trampled
- 25:05under foot by the Gentiles. That means
- 25:07they're going to be conquered and ruled
- 25:09by Gentiles.
- 25:10And Jesus uses a phrase that now Paul is
- 25:13using. Jesus says, "Until the time of
- 25:16the fullness of the Gentiles has come."
- 25:20What this means is that
- 25:22Jerusalem is going to reject Jesus.
- 25:25They're going to crucify Jesus. They're
- 25:27going to lose their temple.
- 25:29And the Gentiles are going to conquer
- 25:30them. It's all tied together.
- 25:33Okay? And they're going to be trampled
- 25:35under foot by the Gentiles.
- 25:37And for that whole time, for 1,800
- 25:40years, God's focus is going to be on the
- 25:43Gentiles.
- 25:45And like Paul, there's going to be a
- 25:46remnant of salvation from the Jews the
- 25:48whole time.
- 25:50But God's focus is going to be bringing
- 25:52the Gentile nations through the process
- 25:54that he brought the Jews through by the
- 25:56law and the prophets and the kings,
- 25:58right? So, that's what's been happening.
- 26:00We, the Gentile nations, have been ruled
- 26:02by a rod of iron for about 1,800 years.
- 26:06But then there's going to come this
- 26:08moment where God's focus is not going to
- 26:12be on reaching the heathen in the
- 26:16unchurched lands. His focus is going to
- 26:19be on the Jews.
- 26:22And that's when his Gentile focus is
- 26:24going to shift. And who are the Jews?
- 26:26Well, they're those who live by faith,
- 26:28whether Jew or Gentile ethnically, and
- 26:31they're the Jewish people as an ethnic
- 26:33family.
- 26:34Describes both.
- 26:36Amen.
- 26:37And so, when Jerusalem
- 26:40goes back into the hands of the Jews in
- 26:421967, that marks
- 26:45a closing of one era, one epoch. That
- 26:48marks the time of the closing of the
- 26:51Gentiles. God's not as focused on the
- 26:54unchurched heathen. Yes, by ones and
- 26:56twos and handfuls, they're going to keep
- 26:58coming like the Jews have been coming
- 27:00all along, but his focus is going to be
- 27:03be to bring revival to the church
- 27:07and to bring salvation to the Jewish
- 27:09people.
- 27:11Do you understand? So, Paul uses the
- 27:13same
- 27:14saying here. He says a partial hardening
- 27:16has happened to Israel until the
- 27:18fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
- 27:22And so, all Israel will be saved just as
- 27:25it is written.
- 27:26But remember, in chapter 9 verse 6, he
- 27:30says they are not all Israel who are of
- 27:33Israel, but only those who are walking
- 27:35by faith, who are children of the
- 27:37spirit, okay? So, when he says all
- 27:40Israel, that refers to
- 27:42the whole church of Gentiles who are
- 27:44saved and grafted into this new tree,
- 27:47and it refers to all the branches of
- 27:49ethnic Israel that are going to be
- 27:51grafted into this tree. It refers to the
- 27:53tree. It refers [clears throat]
- 27:55to Christ. It refers to the predestined
- 27:59body of Christ, the family covenantal
- 28:02family of God on the earth. If you're
- 28:04part of that, then you're part of the
- 28:07saved people.
- 28:10The deliverer will come from Zion. He
- 28:13will remove ungodliness from Jacob. This
- 28:16is my covenant with them when I take
- 28:18away their sins.
- 28:20From the standpoint of the gospel, they,
- 28:23the Jews, are enemies for your sake
- 28:26because when they rejected, you got the
- 28:28message. But from the standpoint of
- 28:30God's choice,
- 28:32they are beloved
- 28:34for the sake of the fathers.
- 28:36God had a purpose, a choice, an election
- 28:39on Israel, the natural election for the
- 28:42natural branches, and they're still
- 28:44special to God. He still has a purpose.
- 28:48What is God's purpose for Israel as a
- 28:50community, ethnic Israel?
- 28:53To restore
- 28:55the pieces of the root that the Gentile
- 28:57church has lost. To restore the
- 29:00foundational understandings that the
- 29:03Gentile church has lost. And in their
- 29:06return to bring about a revival.
- 29:13For the gifts and calling of God are
- 29:16irrevocable.
- 29:18Do you know what this word irrevocable
- 29:20means? It means it doesn't go it it
- 29:23doesn't get taken back. Revoke is the
- 29:25root of the word irrevocable.
- 29:28So if I give you this cup of tea and
- 29:30before you can take a sip I take it
- 29:32back. That means I revoked my gift.
- 29:37But Paul is saying the gifts and
- 29:39callings of God are irrevocable. God
- 29:42doesn't give and take back.
- 29:45He gives.
- 29:47And [music] you're gifted. Whether
- 29:49you're good or you're bad, you've got a
- 29:51gift.
- 29:52But what you do with it,
- 29:54>> [music]
- 29:54>> that's the question.
- 29:56And God's gift of purpose and calling
- 30:00to the family of Israel, he's not taking
- 30:02it back. It's theirs.
- 30:05The calling still stands. They have not
- 30:07stumbled so as to fall out of his
- 30:09purpose. They can still come back in and
- 30:13if even a remnant does that,
- 30:16his purpose stands.
- 30:19For just as you
- 30:21once were disobedient to God,
- 30:24>> [music]
- 30:24>> but now have been shown mercy because of
- 30:27their disobedience,
- 30:29so these also now have been disobedient
- 30:31that because of the mercy [music] shown
- 30:33to you, they also may now be shown
- 30:36mercy.
- 30:38So you're going to go through something
- 30:40and they're going to get the same mercy
- 30:42that you got.
- 30:44They're going to get a second chance.
- 30:46For God has shut up all in disobedience
- 30:50that he might show mercy to all.
- 30:55Oh,
- 30:56the depth
- 30:57of the riches
- 30:59both of the wisdom and the knowledge of
- 31:01God.
- 31:02How unsearchable are [music] his
- 31:04judgments
- 31:05and unfathomable are his ways.
- 31:10For who has known the mind of the Lord?
- 31:13Who became his counselor?
- 31:16Or who has first given to him
- 31:19that it might be [music] paid back to
- 31:20him again?
- 31:22For
- 31:24from him and through him and to him
- 31:28are all things.
- 31:30To him be glory
- 31:33forever.
- 31:34Amen.
- 31:38>> [music]
