- 0:00In the previous chapter,
- 0:01>> [music]
- 0:01>> Paul shows us
- 0:03that
- 0:05he has a terrible burden for the Jews
- 0:07because they're not saved. Then [music]
- 0:08he gives us
- 0:10all the reasons why God chose them.
- 0:13And he shows us natural election
- 0:15with a salvific purpose.
- 0:18But we have to remember that everything
- 0:19he says about election, we have to couch
- 0:22that in the [music] truth that the
- 0:23people he's talking about are not saved.
- 0:26So, we cannot interpret that all of that
- 0:29choice talk refers to you and I [music]
- 0:31not being chosen because God made his
- 0:34sovereign choice when he gave his only
- 0:36son.
- 0:38God made the sovereign choice in the
- 0:39Garden of Gethsemane
- 0:41when he became obedient to the point of
- 0:43death, even death on the cross, that
- 0:45whosoever believes in him shall not
- 0:48perish, but have everlasting life.
- 0:51Amen.
- 0:52So, now Romans 10 dials in
- 0:55on how the Jews are responsible and can
- 0:58reverse the problem.
- 1:00Romans 10, chapter 1. This is one of the
- 1:02most important passages in the Bible.
- 1:07Brethren, my heart's desire and my
- 1:10prayer to God for them is for their
- 1:13salvation.
- 1:17He starts Romans 9 by saying, "I have
- 1:19unceasing sorrow for the Jews." He tells
- 1:22us that they were elected, and then he
- 1:23starts Romans 10 by saying all that
- 1:25election did not equal their salvation.
- 1:30My prayer, my heart's desire and prayer
- 1:33to God for them, the Jews, is for their
- 1:37salvation. Why does Paul need to pray
- 1:40if they're Calvinists, just go back to
- 1:42bed. God does it all.
- 1:45That's monergism, one actor.
- 1:49For I testify about them that they have
- 1:52a zeal for God,
- 1:55but not in accordance with knowledge,
- 1:58with understanding. So, they they want
- 2:00to serve God.
- 2:01He's talking to a Gentile church. He's
- 2:03like, "These guys really do like the
- 2:04Lord,
- 2:06but they don't get it."
- 2:09But, Paul has a solution.
- 2:11That's the key.
- 2:13It's not go back to bed cuz God's
- 2:15choosing some for hell and others for
- 2:17heaven, and it'll all shake out in
- 2:19eternity.
- 2:22For not knowing about God's
- 2:24righteousness,
- 2:26and seeking to establish their own,
- 2:30they do not subject themselves
- 2:33to the righteousness of God.
- 2:35This is the problem. It's not God's
- 2:37choice. He made the choice at the cross.
- 2:41But, they do not subject themselves.
- 2:46Does that sound like a decision to you?
- 2:48Now, that's not a decision we can make
- 2:50without grace, but when grace comes to
- 2:52us,
- 2:53God gives us the ability to subject
- 2:57ourselves, but human free will gives us
- 2:59the ability
- 3:01to do spite to that same grace.
- 3:06To come short of the grace of God.
- 3:13To resist, to harden our hearts in the
- 3:15day of salvation.
- 3:19For not knowing about God's
- 3:20righteousness, and seeking to establish
- 3:23their own, they did not subject
- 3:26themselves to the righteousness of God.
- 3:29For Christ is the end of the law for
- 3:32righteousness to everyone who believes.
- 3:34Jesus finished the law.
- 3:37The law killed Jesus.
- 3:41He was put to death by the stewards of
- 3:43the law.
- 3:45And it was necessary that the law of
- 3:47Moses put Jesus to death so that it
- 3:50would become unjust in doing so and
- 3:53could no longer attach to us going
- 3:55forward.
- 3:58For Moses writes that the man who
- 3:59practices the righteousness which is
- 4:02based on the law shall live by that
- 4:03righteousness.
- 4:05But the righteousness based on faith
- 4:08speaks
- 4:09as follows.
- 4:11So Paul has told us
- 4:14that the Jews aren't saved.
- 4:15He's told us that they have a zeal
- 4:18but they're trying to find the righteous
- 4:21righteousness of God according to the
- 4:22law instead of by faith.
- 4:25So now he's going to give us the key.
- 4:26He's going to tell them what to do.
- 4:29But
- 4:30if Paul's right and salvation is in
- 4:33Jesus and you're a Jewish audience
- 4:36listening to him,
- 4:37what are you thinking? You're saying,
- 4:39"Well, maybe Paul's right.
- 4:42Maybe Jesus is the answer, but some say
- 4:44he's in the abyss
- 4:47and others say he's ascended into
- 4:49heaven.
- 4:50But either way, we can't interact with
- 4:51him. He's gone."
- 4:54So maybe we regret that we didn't listen
- 4:57when he preached in the temple. Maybe
- 4:58we're sad that that day in the synagogue
- 5:00we tried to push him toward the cliff.
- 5:03But he's in heaven, the Jew the
- 5:05Christians say, and he's still in the
- 5:07grave, the Jews say. So we can't contact
- 5:09Jesus.
- 5:11That's the dilemma that Paul's going to
- 5:13resolve.
- 5:14Okay?
- 5:16And he's going to quote Moses when Moses
- 5:18gave the law. But Moses is going to tell
- 5:20the people how to touch the law in
- 5:23Deuteronomy 30 and 12. Paul's going to
- 5:26tell the Jews how to interact with
- 5:27Jesus.
- 5:29Okay? So he says to them, "The
- 5:31righteousness of faith
- 5:34speaks
- 5:36like this, as follows."
- 5:38Paul quotes to them what faith says to
- 5:42the Jewish congregation. Here's what it
- 5:44says.
- 5:45"Do not say in your heart,
- 5:48"Who will ascend into heaven?" That is
- 5:51to bring Christ down.
- 5:55"Or who will descend into the abyss?"
- 5:59The grave. That is to bring Christ up
- 6:03from the dead.
- 6:06But what does it say?
- 6:10The word
- 6:12is near you.
- 6:16If you're looking for Christ,
- 6:19don't worry that you can't get into
- 6:21heaven, and don't worry that you can't
- 6:23go into the grave
- 6:24because Christ
- 6:26is here as the word.
- 6:30The word resolves your need to connect
- 6:34with Christ.
- 6:36And of course this makes us think of
- 6:38John. In the beginning was the word, and
- 6:41the word was with God, and the word was
- 6:43God, and the word became flesh and dwelt
- 6:46among us, and we beheld his glory as of
- 6:48the only begotten of the Father, full of
- 6:50grace and truth.
- 6:52Amen.
- 6:54The law came through Moses, John says,
- 6:56but grace and truth through Jesus
- 6:57Christ. So, Paul says, "Don't Don't
- 7:01worry, Jews. Don't worry that you can't
- 7:03get into heaven.
- 7:04Don't worry that you can't go into the
- 7:05grave because Christ is still here in
- 7:09his word." But the word that he's using
- 7:11here for word is not logos like John
- 7:14used.
- 7:15It's rhema.
- 7:18It means the spoken, preached, anointed
- 7:22utterance.
- 7:24So, what he What you could say is,
- 7:26"But what does it say? The preached,
- 7:30anointed preaching is here."
- 7:34So, he's telling the Jews, "You can
- 7:36still encounter Jesus if you'll listen
- 7:39to what I'm preaching
- 7:41by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 7:43But what does it say?
- 7:45The rhema, the word is near you.
- 7:49In your mouth and in your heart. That is
- 7:52the word of faith
- 7:55which we are preaching.
- 8:00Paul is saying something very bold.
- 8:03He's saying you can encounter Christ
- 8:07through the preaching that is
- 8:09[clears throat] happening in your city.
- 8:13And what are they preaching?
- 8:15That if you confess with your mouth
- 8:19Jesus as Lord
- 8:21and believe in your heart
- 8:24that God raised him from the dead you
- 8:28will be saved.
- 8:32For with the heart a person believes.
- 8:37You don't believe from your head.
- 8:40You believe from your core.
- 8:42Your soul.
- 8:44Your emotions.
- 8:47You know in the deepest part of you
- 8:49who God is and that he's speaking to
- 8:52you.
- 8:53For with the heart a person believes
- 8:55resulting in righteousness.
- 8:59That's the righteousness of Abraham when
- 9:01his belief, his faith was credited to
- 9:03him as righteousness.
- 9:06And with the mouth
- 9:07he confesses resulting in salvation.
- 9:11When you conform your mouth and your
- 9:13heart to what God is speaking
- 9:16that's when you're right with God.
- 9:19That's called salvation.
- 9:21For the scripture says
- 9:23whoever believes in him will not be
- 9:26disappointed.
- 9:30Okay?
- 9:32For there is no distinction between Jew
- 9:33and Greek. For the same Lord is Lord of
- 9:36all.
- 9:37Abounding in riches for all who call on
- 9:41him.
- 9:43There's the election. He's decided to
- 9:46abound in riches, to pour out help to
- 9:50everyone who calls on him.
- 9:54Verse 13, "For whoever will call on the
- 9:58name of the Lord will be saved."
- 10:03Now,
- 10:04this presupposes calling in a certain
- 10:07way, in a certain sincerity, because
- 10:09Jesus says in Luke 6, "Many will say to
- 10:12me, 'Lord, Lord,' and I will say,
- 10:14'Depart from me, you workers of
- 10:16iniquity.'" Same as told in Matthew 7.
- 10:19So, it's not calling in a in a shallow
- 10:22or dishonest way. You got to mean that
- 10:25he's Lord of your life when you confess
- 10:27it. You got to let him be Lord of your
- 10:29life. You can't be saved by a lie from
- 10:31your mouth that argues with the truth of
- 10:33your choices in your life.
- 10:38But he says, "Whoever will call on the
- 10:39name of the Lord will be saved." Okay,
- 10:41so we've got to call on him. Paul's
- 10:42going to set up a solution. He says,
- 10:44"You need to call on the name of the
- 10:46Lord." But then he's going to say,
- 10:48"But
- 10:49how then will they call on him whom they
- 10:52have not believed?" So, he's saying
- 10:54about the Jews, Jesus is in heaven,
- 10:57and some say he's in the grave. So, how
- 10:59will they call on him?
- 11:01How can they cry out to the Jesus who
- 11:04they think is gone?
- 11:07How will they believe in him whom they
- 11:10have not heard?
- 11:12Notice he does not say about whom they
- 11:14have not heard. He does not say of whom
- 11:17they have not heard. He says, "How can
- 11:19you have saving faith, belief,
- 11:22if you haven't heard God?"
- 11:26You need to be able to say, "God is
- 11:28speaking to me."
- 11:31before you can have the kind of belief
- 11:32that is saving faith.
- 11:34How will they believe
- 11:37in him whom they have not heard?
- 11:40And how will they hear
- 11:43without a preacher?
- 11:45So, you're not going to hear because
- 11:46Jesus walks into your living room,
- 11:48you're going to hear because you
- 11:50encounter the anointed rhema preaching
- 11:54of truth from the church.
- 11:57How will they hear without a preacher?
- 11:59And how will they preach unless they are
- 12:02sent?
- 12:04apostello
- 12:06Just as it is written, how beautiful are
- 12:08the feet of those who bring good news
- 12:11of good things. Paul is telling the
- 12:13Jews, it's not too late to encounter
- 12:16Jesus
- 12:17because he's still here with his people.
- 12:21This is the same Paul who persecuted the
- 12:23church and said, "Who are you, Lord?"
- 12:26And the Lord said, "I am Jesus whom you
- 12:28are persecuting." He's telling the Jews
- 12:30Jesus is still here in the church.
- 12:34You can still encounter him. You can
- 12:37still believe him because you can still
- 12:40hear not about him, you can hear him.
- 12:47How will they hear without a preacher?
- 12:49And how will they preach unless they are
- 12:51sent? Just as it is written, how
- 12:53beautiful are the feet of those who
- 12:54bring good news of good things. However,
- 12:57they did not all heed the good news, the
- 12:59gospel.
- 13:00For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed
- 13:02our report?" Notice that heeding, acting
- 13:05on the gospel, is the same thing for
- 13:07Paul as believing the gospel.
- 13:11He's made the two, heed and believe, are
- 13:14the same thing. They did not all heed
- 13:16the gospel for Isaiah said, "Who has
- 13:18believed?"
- 13:21Right?
- 13:22So, he's They've heard the preaching,
- 13:25but their hearts didn't stir.
- 13:27They didn't
- 13:28How does Paul know they didn't believe?
- 13:30Because they didn't act on it.
- 13:32So, faith
- 13:35the righteousness of faith is the
- 13:36solution for the Jews, right?
- 13:38And that faith faith comes
- 13:42from hearing
- 13:45and hearing
- 13:47by the word
- 13:50of
- 13:51Christ.
- 13:53He starts the dilemma of who's going to
- 13:55go into heaven to bring Christ down?
- 13:57Who's going to go into
- 13:59the grave to bring Christ up? And he
- 14:01finishes it by saying
- 14:04Christ's word, his rhema, is still here.
- 14:09And you can respond differently
- 14:12to the preaching of the church.
- 14:15And you can still encounter Jesus.
- 14:18His presence, his reality. Not words
- 14:20about him, but you can still hear him.
- 14:23Because the word of Christ is still here
- 14:25[music] in the church. Faith comes by
- 14:28hearing and hearing by the word of
- 14:30Christ.
- 14:32But I say, surely they have never heard,
- 14:34have they? Indeed they have.
- 14:38They've heard the word of Christ.
- 14:42Their voice has gone out into all the
- 14:45earth. And their words [music] to the
- 14:47end of the world. He uses plural there.
- 14:50The church's voice
- 14:52>> [music]
- 14:52>> has gone out.
- 14:54But I say, surely Israel did not know,
- 14:56did they?
- 14:58First Moses says,
- 14:59>> [music]
- 15:00>> I will make you jealous by that which is
- 15:02not a nation.
- 15:05By a nation without understanding, I
- 15:07will anger you.
- 15:10And Isaiah is very bold and says
- 15:13I was found by those who did not seek
- 15:16me.
- 15:17And became manifest to those who did not
- 15:20ask for me.
- 15:22But as for Israel, he says, "All day
- 15:25long I, the Lord,
- 15:28have stretched out my hands to [music] a
- 15:31disobedient and obstinate people."
- 15:36Do you get it?
- 15:39So,
- 15:40what is he saying?
- 15:42He's saying that the Gentile churches
- 15:45are supposed to make Israel mad.
- 15:49The Gentile churches are supposed to
- 15:51provoke Israel to realize what they lost
- 15:55when God does a work among the Gentiles
- 15:58that even the Jews couldn't find with
- 16:00all their law.
- 16:02And he's saying that the word of God is
- 16:05still available. You can still have
- 16:06faith. You can still be saved because
- 16:09you can still hear Christ through the
- 16:11preaching of the church.
- 16:15>> [music]
