- 0:00So we're going to start the book of
- 0:01Romans, and this is the first epistle in
- 0:05the New Testament.
- 0:06So this is the first
- 0:08that is not [music] story of the gospel
- 0:10or even the narrative of how the church
- 0:12began,
- 0:14but instead, this is Paul writing a
- 0:17pastoral letter
- 0:19that basically stands [music] for his
- 0:22ministry
- 0:23in his absence. So he wishes he could be
- 0:26in Rome.
- 0:27This is [music] likely
- 0:30um during his third missionary journey,
- 0:32likely written from Corinth to Rome,
- 0:36and his main themes are
- 0:40to reestablish the congregation in Rome
- 0:43in what the gospel is, [music] in what
- 0:45the righteousness and grace of God is,
- 0:48and and what the role of faith [music]
- 0:50is in this process.
- 0:53You have to understand that in the arc
- 0:57of the church's growth,
- 0:59the church is born on the day of
- 1:01Pentecost,
- 1:02but the church is only Jewish until the
- 1:05baptism of Cornelius.
- 1:08And that's kind of this exception that
- 1:10is tolerated by the believers, but the
- 1:13church is still enforcing the law until
- 1:17the conflict in Acts 15 and that
- 1:20Jerusalem Council.
- 1:22And so those are major pivots and
- 1:25developments. [music]
- 1:27And much of Paul's ministry is geared
- 1:31toward
- 1:32disentangling
- 1:34the law
- 1:35from the new covenant.
- 1:38He He wants people [music] to understand
- 1:40that it had a purpose in God, but that
- 1:43it is no longer the covenant that is
- 1:46brokering salvation for those who are
- 1:49followers of Jesus
- 1:51or for anyone else. Does that make
- 1:53sense? It is vanishing away. It is
- 1:56losing its role and purpose altogether,
- 1:59and it is being replaced by a new and
- 2:02vibrant relationship with God through
- 2:06the spirit
- 2:07in his body
- 2:09through the gospel
- 2:11through the medium of faith.
- 2:14Faith is not what we have in place of a
- 2:18relationship with God. Faith is how we
- 2:21interact with God.
- 2:23But the core of salvation is a
- 2:25relationship with God.
- 2:27Just like this phone is a medium for
- 2:30interacting with people overseas [music]
- 2:32or in another state,
- 2:34you can't have a relationship with them
- 2:36apart from one of these devices.
- 2:39In the same way, faith is not the
- 2:41substitute for the relationship with
- 2:44God. It's the way. It's the bridge
- 2:46through which we have it.
- 2:48So much of modern Christianity does not
- 2:51understand the framework that Paul is
- 2:54writing from. He's not addressing a
- 2:57church of today that has thrown off all
- 3:00restraint, that has no authority in
- 3:03their life, that is
- 3:06converting the grace of God into a
- 3:08license for sin. He's writing to a
- 3:10church that is trying to return to rules
- 3:14and regulations
- 3:16in place of the dynamism of the Holy
- 3:18Spirit and the power of God through the
- 3:21gospel apprehended through faith. And
- 3:23that's the big themes of this book.
- 3:27And it's He's going to start off. He's
- 3:29going to address the gospel. He's going
- 3:31to introduce and frame faith right here
- 3:34at the beginning.
- 3:36Romans chapter 1 verse 1.
- 3:40Paul, a bondservant of Christ Jesus,
- 3:44called as an apostle, set apart for the
- 3:48gospel of God,
- 3:50which he promised beforehand
- 3:54through his prophets in the Holy
- 3:56Scriptures, concerning his son, who was
- 3:59born a descendant of David according to
- 4:03the flesh, who was declared the son of
- 4:06God with power
- 4:08by the resurrection from the dead,
- 4:10according to the spirit of holiness,
- 4:13Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we
- 4:16have received grace and apostleship to
- 4:19bring about the obedience
- 4:23of faith among all the Gentiles for his
- 4:27name's sake. Among whom you also are the
- 4:30called of Jesus Christ.
- 4:33To all who are beloved of God in Rome,
- 4:36called as saints, grace to you and peace
- 4:40from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 4:42Christ.
- 4:44That's a long sentence.
- 4:47That is a seven-verse sentence if I'm
- 4:50reading it correctly.
- 4:52So let's look at what Paul does here in
- 4:54this first sentence,
- 4:57these seven verses.
- 4:58First, he declares who he is. He says
- 5:02that he is Paul, that he is a
- 5:04bondservant.
- 5:06Jesus paid his bond
- 5:09to set him free from the certain
- 5:11condemnation of hell,
- 5:13so now he is under the jurisdiction of
- 5:16the one who paid his bond.
- 5:19Bondservant doesn't just describe
- 5:21someone who paid your debt, it describes
- 5:23someone to whom you are absolutely bound
- 5:26in obedience. It describes lordship.
- 5:28Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ,
- 5:31called as an apostle,
- 5:34set apart for the gospel of God.
- 5:40And what is this gospel?
- 5:42This is the declaration
- 5:46of a new life and eternity possible in
- 5:49the kingdom and reign of the Holy Spirit
- 5:52through Jesus Christ. This gospel of
- 5:54God, he says, was promised beforehand
- 5:57through his prophets in the Holy
- 5:59Scripture. So he anchors everything he's
- 6:02going to teach about the gospel of God,
- 6:05he anchors it in the Old Testament. He's
- 6:07going to be completely accountable and
- 6:09faithful
- 6:10to be able to prove this gospel from the
- 6:12scriptures that have already come. You
- 6:14see how he's tying the new to the old?
- 6:17Then he says,
- 6:19concerning his son, who was born
- 6:22of a descendant of David according to
- 6:24the flesh,
- 6:25who was declared the son of God with
- 6:29power by the resurrection from the dead,
- 6:32according to the spirit of holiness,
- 6:35Jesus Christ our Lord. So he says Jesus,
- 6:39the gospel is about Jesus. Jesus was the
- 6:42son of David according to the flesh, and
- 6:44he was declared the son of God
- 6:47through the power of the resurrection.
- 6:50Through whom we have received grace and
- 6:54apostleship to bring about
- 6:58what? The obedience of faith.
- 7:03Faith is not what we have instead of
- 7:06obedience.
- 7:08Faith produces obedience in us. So
- 7:12Paul's whole point,
- 7:14the herald of the gospel and the work of
- 7:17apostleship,
- 7:19is to bring about in the church an
- 7:22obedience.
- 7:23Not an obedience that is rooted in a
- 7:26faithless adherence to do's and don'ts,
- 7:29but an obedience that is rooted in
- 7:31faith, in a true belief and acceptance
- 7:35and transformation of our hearts
- 7:38as we accept Jesus as Lord of our lives.
- 7:42That's the obedience of faith. Obedience
- 7:46is the product, faith is the means. Paul
- 7:49wants to bring about an obedience that
- 7:53comes from faith.
- 7:57Among all the Gentiles for his name's
- 7:59sake. Among whom you also are the called
- 8:02of Jesus Christ.
- 8:04This idea of the called refers to the
- 8:07elect.
- 8:08It's Paul basically saying that it's not
- 8:11just the Jews who are God's chosen
- 8:14people,
- 8:15but it's those who are the called, who
- 8:18have heard and responded and accepted
- 8:21the call of the Lord Jesus Christ. They
- 8:23are now the Israel of God. So when he
- 8:25refers to the called, he's basically
- 8:27saying the elect or the covenant people.
- 8:32To all who are beloved of God in Rome,
- 8:36called as saints, grace to you and peace
- 8:40from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 8:43Christ. Interestingly, when he says
- 8:46peace from God our Father and the Lord
- 8:49Jesus Christ, the word he's using here
- 8:52is just as easily translated God our
- 8:55Father, even the Lord Jesus Christ. It
- 8:58doesn't always mean
- 9:00an additional. It means it's two ways of
- 9:03saying the same thing. The same God who
- 9:06is called the Father and is called Jesus
- 9:08Christ. That's where grace and peace are
- 9:10coming from.
- 9:13And then Paul begins his discourse.
- 9:14That's his introduction. First,
- 9:17I thank my God through Jesus Christ for
- 9:21all of you
- 9:22because your faith is being proclaimed
- 9:26throughout the whole world.
- 9:29So he says I came to bring about the
- 9:30obedience of faith, and I want you to
- 9:32know that your faith
- 9:34is being celebrated, talked about,
- 9:37proclaimed throughout the whole world.
- 9:40For God,
- 9:42whom I serve in my spirit in the
- 9:45preaching of the gospel of his son,
- 9:49is my witness as to how unceasingly I
- 9:53make mention of you,
- 9:55always in my prayers, making requests
- 10:00if perhaps now at last, by the will of
- 10:03God, I may succeed
- 10:05in coming to you.
- 10:07So, Paul is trying to convince this
- 10:10church that he fathered.
- 10:13I am not away from you because I want to
- 10:15be away from you.
- 10:17I'm away from you because I have to be.
- 10:20But, I'm making up for it
- 10:22by carrying a burden of love for you in
- 10:24prayer.
- 10:25And I am connected to you through my
- 10:28love expressed through prayer.
- 10:31And he tells them, "God's my witness of
- 10:33how constantly I am praying for you."
- 10:38And then he says this,
- 10:41"For
- 10:42I long to see you
- 10:45that I may impart some spiritual gift to
- 10:49you
- 10:51that you
- 10:53may be established.
- 10:56That is, that I may be encouraged
- 11:00together with you while among you
- 11:05each of us
- 11:07by the other's faith
- 11:09both yours
- 11:10and mine."
- 11:13His point is to bring about the
- 11:14obedience of faith.
- 11:16He says, "Your faith is traveling all
- 11:18over the world."
- 11:19But, he says, "I long to come to you
- 11:23because I want to impart a spiritual
- 11:26gift to you."
- 11:28What is that gift? That gift is clearer
- 11:30understanding.
- 11:32That gift is the grace of preaching.
- 11:35That gift is what is going to establish
- 11:40the Roman church.
- 11:42The Roman church is born.
- 11:44The Roman church is a witness all over
- 11:45the world, but it needs establishing.
- 11:48But, Paul says,
- 11:50"Is it This isn't a one-sided blessing.
- 11:53When I come to you,
- 11:54I want to give you something. And I long
- 11:57to give it to you.
- 11:58But, I also want to receive something
- 12:00from you."
- 12:01Paul's going to be edified. Paul's going
- 12:03to receive a gift
- 12:05when he encounters the faith of the
- 12:08church that he's coming to serve.
- 12:11For I long to see you that I may impart
- 12:13some spiritual gift to you.
- 12:16This is an insight into how the church
- 12:18works.
- 12:20This is an insight in how into how the
- 12:21grace of God is ministered in its
- 12:23various forms.
- 12:25We long to be with each other because we
- 12:28need to give something and we need to
- 12:30receive something.
- 12:31And this exchange of gifts
- 12:35gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts of grace
- 12:38this is what the word communion even
- 12:40means.
- 12:41The exchange of gifts.
- 12:43So, the supper is a celebration and a
- 12:46pointing toward this spiritual
- 12:48phenomenon that Paul is describing in
- 12:51his own heart toward the church.
- 12:55"I do not want you to be unaware,
- 12:57brethren,
- 12:58that often I have planned to come to you
- 13:02and have been prevented
- 13:05so far
- 13:06so that I may obtain some fruit among
- 13:09you also
- 13:11even as among the rest of the Gentiles."
- 13:15So, he says, "I long to see you because
- 13:16I need to give something to you." And he
- 13:17says, "I don't I don't want you to be
- 13:18unaware.
- 13:19I'm really serious. I have tried to be
- 13:22there because
- 13:24I need to bring fruit from you."
- 13:28What did Jesus say in John 15?
- 13:32What did he say the Father's will was
- 13:34and what was going to bring glory to the
- 13:36Father? That we bear
- 13:39much fruit.
- 13:40And it would be fruit that stayed, that
- 13:42kept producing. Right? So, now we see
- 13:45what that fruit looks like. That fruit
- 13:48looks like Paul coming and harvesting
- 13:50something from this church
- 13:52that can be given to others.
- 13:55What is that fruit? It's their faith.
- 13:58It's the witness of how God's working in
- 14:00their midst. It's their humility. It's
- 14:02their grace. It's their joy. It's their
- 14:04love. It's even their financial support
- 14:07as we're going to see.
- 14:13"I am under obligation both to Greeks
- 14:16and to barbarians, both to wise and to
- 14:19the foolish.
- 14:20So, for my part, I am eager to preach
- 14:22the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
- 14:27For I am not ashamed of the gospel
- 14:31for it is the power of God
- 14:35for salvation
- 14:37to everyone who believes
- 14:41to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
- 14:44For in it
- 14:46in the gospel the righteousness of God
- 14:50is revealed or is being revealed, is
- 14:54what the Greek tense says.
- 14:56From faith
- 14:58to faith
- 15:00as it is written,
- 15:02but the righteous man shall live by
- 15:05faith."
- 15:06What has Paul just said up above?
- 15:09He said
- 15:10that I want to give you something
- 15:12and I want you to give me something.
- 15:15He doubles down. He says, "I really want
- 15:17to come to you so that I can get fruit
- 15:18from you and take it elsewhere to
- 15:20others."
- 15:21And then he tells us that he's not
- 15:23ashamed of the gospel.
- 15:26For the gospel is the power of God.
- 15:30Any message that you encounter that is
- 15:32not the power of God is not the gospel.
- 15:36But, the gospel is the power of God for
- 15:40salvation.
- 15:41To everyone who believes, not to
- 15:43everyone who has ever believed, but to
- 15:45everyone who is believing.
- 15:48For in it in the gospel
- 15:51the righteousness of God is always and
- 15:55ever being revealed.
- 15:58And then he says, "It is being revealed
- 16:00from [snorts] faith
- 16:02to faith."
- 16:04And there's two ways you can listen to
- 16:06that. But, if we think about what Paul
- 16:08has said
- 16:10in verse 10 and 11, what we have to
- 16:13infer is that he's telling us that the
- 16:16gospel
- 16:17is a message, but also a grace and a
- 16:21power
- 16:22that is
- 16:23sharing from your faith to my faith and
- 16:27from my faith to your faith.
- 16:30God's way God's right way is being
- 16:34revealed through us to one another as we
- 16:38lay down our lives
- 16:40in his will.
- 16:41It's also, of course, being revealed in
- 16:44a
- 16:45consecutive manner as a journey
- 16:47from this season of faith to a greater
- 16:50season of faith. And that would point to
- 16:52the fact that they're born. They're a
- 16:55good church, but they need to be
- 16:56established. They need to go from birth
- 16:59to establishment, from establishment to
- 17:01fruitfulness. So, there's two ways you
- 17:04can hear it, but I think the way Paul's
- 17:06presenting it is he's saying it's from
- 17:09people to people. From people of faith
- 17:11to people of faith. From faith to faith.
- 17:15And then he says, "For the righteous man
- 17:18shall live by faith." Do you hear how
- 17:21much faith he's packing into these first
- 17:23verses?
- 17:25His whole stewardship, his whole
- 17:26ministry is to bring about the obedience
- 17:28that comes from faith. But, it's not a
- 17:31static faith. It's a from faith to faith
- 17:34faith. And then he says that the
- 17:36righteous man lives by faith.
- 17:40He doesn't get faith in a one-time
- 17:42deposit. He journeys by faith. He grows
- 17:46by faith. He's established by faith. He
- 17:49produces fruit by faith. It's a
- 17:52consecutive progressive journey.
- 17:56Faith
- 17:58is not a moment in time. Faith describes
- 18:02an ongoing trusting relationship with
- 18:04Jesus Christ.
- 18:07Okay. So, he says, "The righteous man
- 18:10shall live by faith."
- 18:12Which is, of course, quoting from the
- 18:14Old Testament.
- 18:16But, then he says this,
- 18:18"For the wrath of God
- 18:20is revealed from heaven against all
- 18:23ungodliness
- 18:25and unrighteousness of men who suppress
- 18:29the truth
- 18:30in unrighteousness."
- 18:33So, if he's telling us that faith is
- 18:37from your faith to my faith, the very
- 18:40next thing he tells us is, "But, if you
- 18:42suppress what God wants to give to
- 18:45others through you, God's wrath is
- 18:47revealed from heaven."
- 18:50Your relationship with God
- 18:52by necessity includes relationship with
- 18:55his people.
- 18:57You cannot say you love God whom you
- 18:59have not seen if you don't love your
- 19:00brother whom you have seen.
- 19:02By this we know what love is. Jesus laid
- 19:05down his life for us, so ought we to lay
- 19:07down our lives for one another.
- 19:09So, we have faith as an expression of
- 19:12giving.
- 19:14An ongoing journey of progression. And
- 19:16we have unrighteousness as suppression.
- 19:21Giving versus suppression. Faith versus
- 19:24unrighteousness.
- 19:26And this frames the posture of his
- 19:29definition of faith as we go into the
- 19:31book.
- 19:33"For the wrath of God is revealed from
- 19:36heaven against all ungodliness and
- 19:38unrighteousness of men who suppress the
- 19:41truth in unrighteousness
- 19:44because that which is known about God
- 19:48is revealed in them, within them.
- 19:51For God made it evident to them.
- 19:54God put something inside of you that
- 19:56you're suppressing.
- 19:59That's why his wrath is coming on us.
- 20:01He's given us the power to be more
- 20:04than selfish sinners.
- 20:08For since the creation of the world, his
- 20:11invisible attributes,
- 20:13his eternal power and divine nature
- 20:17have been clearly seen, being understood
- 20:21through what has been made,
- 20:23so that they are without excuse.
- 20:28So, he's talking about these people who
- 20:30live for themselves, these people who
- 20:32suppress God's truth, God's love, God's
- 20:35gifts in unrighteousness.
- 20:38And he's saying,
- 20:39"How God is and who God is is actually
- 20:42revealed in you."
- 20:44He gave you the capacity
- 20:47to be like him. He made you in his
- 20:48image.
- 20:50And that's why we're without excuse.
- 20:54Because
- 20:55eternity has been written in our hearts.
- 20:58For even though they knew God, they did
- 21:01not honor him as God or give thanks, but
- 21:05they became futile in their speculations
- 21:08and their foolish hearts were darkened.
- 21:12So, he's talking about those who from
- 21:13the creation of the world have missed
- 21:16out
- 21:17on what God wanted to do through them.
- 21:21He's saying, "Even though they knew God,
- 21:23even though they could not deny a
- 21:25creator, just looking at themselves and
- 21:28each other and the created world, his
- 21:30invisible attributes are there."
- 21:33Yes, there's pain. Yes, there's
- 21:34brokenness, but there's too much beauty
- 21:36to not have a designer.
- 21:38There's too much life, there's too much
- 21:40goodness, too much joy to not have a
- 21:42creator, a father who stands behind all
- 21:45this.
- 21:46So, even our very lives are testimonies
- 21:49to us of a God beyond us.
- 21:53So, they knew God, yet they did not
- 21:55honor him as God or give thanks, but
- 21:57they became futile in their speculations
- 21:59and their foolish hearts were darkened.
- 22:02Professing to be wise, they became
- 22:04fools. This is like those who died in
- 22:07the days of Noah.
- 22:08This is like those who died in Sodom and
- 22:10Gomorrah. Okay? These are the people of
- 22:13old
- 22:15from the Old Testament who were not able
- 22:18to walk in an awareness of God, like the
- 22:20Jews were at least striving to do
- 22:22through the first covenant. You kind of
- 22:24follow where I'm going here, where he's
- 22:25going?
- 22:27Professing to be wise, they became
- 22:29fools, and they exchanged the glory of
- 22:32the incorruptible God for an image in
- 22:35the form of corruptible man and the
- 22:37birds and four-footed animals and
- 22:40crawling creatures.
- 22:42So, this In this, he's talking about the
- 22:44pagan religions. And he's saying,
- 22:47"They forsook the glory of God." Now,
- 22:50what is the glory of God? Mankind was
- 22:52made in the image and glory of God.
- 22:57Mankind was made to be the tabernacle of
- 23:00the divine presence.
- 23:01Glory is where the human and the divine
- 23:04come together
- 23:06in relationship.
- 23:08Right? But mankind forsook that, and it
- 23:11chose to fashion a religion and a form
- 23:15of worship after animals and created
- 23:18things and birds.
- 23:20They forsook the plan. All have sinned
- 23:23and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 23:26What we were made to be, how we were
- 23:28made to express his image when he
- 23:30created us
- 23:31in the Garden of Eden.
- 23:33They [clears throat] exchanged the glory
- 23:36of the incorruptible God
- 23:38for an image in the form of corruptible
- 23:41man
- 23:42and of birds and four-footed animals and
- 23:45crawling creatures. So, they they
- 23:47stopped trying to be like their father
- 23:49in heaven.
- 23:50And they started making gods that were
- 23:53less than what God had made them to be.
- 23:56It's a betrayal of glory.
- 23:58Therefore, God gave them over in the
- 24:01lusts of their heart to impurity, so
- 24:04that their bodies would become
- 24:05dishonored among them.
- 24:07Your bodies were made in the image of
- 24:09God as temples for his presence.
- 24:12But your bodies are going to be
- 24:15dishonored when you stop living for his
- 24:19glory and you start living for the
- 24:21little images you can make that start to
- 24:23look more like animals
- 24:25instead of like the one you were made
- 24:28to be like.
- 24:29For they exchanged the truth of God for
- 24:31a lie
- 24:33and worshipped and served the creature
- 24:36rather than the creator, who is blessed
- 24:39forever. Amen.
- 24:41They worshipped what they made instead
- 24:44of who made them.
- 24:46He is contrasting the whole of pagan
- 24:50idolatry worship
- 24:52and futile living against those who
- 24:54worship the living God.
- 24:57For this reason,
- 24:59God gave them over to degrading
- 25:01passions.
- 25:03When you start worshipping what you make
- 25:06instead of who made you,
- 25:08you get more and more lustful.
- 25:11It's a pride that produces debauchery.
- 25:14For this reason, God gave them over to
- 25:17degrading passions.
- 25:20For their women exchanged the natural
- 25:22function
- 25:24for that which is unnatural. He means
- 25:26that women didn't want to be with men
- 25:28sexually. Women wanted to be only with
- 25:31women.
- 25:33And then he says, "And in the same way
- 25:34also, the men abandoned the natural
- 25:37function of the woman and burned in
- 25:39their desire toward one another." He's
- 25:41talking about Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 25:44This is
- 25:45a perversion, but it's the product of
- 25:48self-worship.
- 25:50It's the product of falling in love with
- 25:52what you've made instead of who made
- 25:54you.
- 25:55It's a product of a perverted
- 25:57self-created fake universe that you
- 26:00built for yourself instead of knowing
- 26:01you were made for a purpose to be the
- 26:04temple of the invisible
- 26:07incorruptible God.
- 26:11And in this way also, the men abandoned
- 26:12the natural function of women and burned
- 26:14in their desire toward other other men,
- 26:18with men committing indecent acts and
- 26:20receiving in their own persons the due
- 26:22penalty of their error. He's saying they
- 26:25got STDs.
- 26:27They took They They became sick. Their
- 26:29bodies became broken and unhealthy
- 26:32because of the filth
- 26:34that they were engaging in.
- 26:37And just as they did not see fit to
- 26:39acknowledge God any longer,
- 26:42God gave them over
- 26:45to a depraved mind to do those things
- 26:49which are not proper.
- 26:52When you refuse to acknowledge, not just
- 26:55verbally, but by your priorities,
- 26:58by your worship,
- 27:00by what you honor,
- 27:02by what grabs your attention, consumes
- 27:04your time, and demands your devotion,
- 27:07when you cease to acknowledge God in
- 27:09your choices,
- 27:11you're moving toward a depravity of
- 27:13confusion,
- 27:15and God will let you go.
- 27:18He'll give you over to a depraved mind
- 27:21to do things you would have never
- 27:23thought possible.
- 27:26Being filled with all unrighteousness,
- 27:29wickedness, greed, evil, full of envy,
- 27:33murder, strife, deceit, malice. They are
- 27:37gossips, slanderers,
- 27:41He's not describing one tiny subset of
- 27:43human nature. He's describing human
- 27:45nature.
- 27:46He's describing all cultures, all
- 27:49families, all people who refuse to build
- 27:53their life on the fundamental truth that
- 27:56they were made for the purpose and glory
- 27:58of another.
- 28:00If you don't keep that front and center,
- 28:02you're going to start work worshipping
- 28:04your own creation instead of the one who
- 28:06made you.
- 28:08Being filled with all unrighteousness,
- 28:10wickedness, greed,
- 28:13evil, full of envy.
- 28:18Greed and envy are two of the the first
- 28:20specific sins that define human
- 28:23depravity, greed and envy.
- 28:26Murder,
- 28:28cuz of course,
- 28:30after greed and envy comes murder.
- 28:32Remember Cain.
- 28:34Strife,
- 28:36deceit,
- 28:38malice,
- 28:40they are gossips,
- 28:42slanderers,
- 28:44haters of God,
- 28:47insolent, arrogant, boastful,
- 28:51inventors of evil,
- 28:53disobedient to parents.
- 28:57Right in there with that lineup.
- 29:00He's saying one of the
- 29:02one of the products, one of the fruits
- 29:05Now, this isn't the fruit that he wants
- 29:06to take from the Roman church and share
- 29:08with the other churches. This is the
- 29:09fruit of what he doesn't want them to be
- 29:11part of.
- 29:13But he puts right in there with all the
- 29:14other vile sins, disobedient to parents.
- 29:19Because that rebellion
- 29:22is violating the order, the plan God
- 29:25placed you in
- 29:27to form you into his image.
- 29:30Without understanding,
- 29:33untrustworthy,
- 29:35not worthy to be trusted,
- 29:37unloving,
- 29:40unmerciful.
- 29:43First, he starts off by describing the
- 29:45horrible things they are, but then he
- 29:47pivots and he starts describing how they
- 29:50got there.
- 29:51The things they lacked.
- 29:53They didn't obey their parents.
- 29:56They were without understanding. They
- 29:58didn't study and know the truth.
- 30:01They didn't cultivate a life that could
- 30:03evoke trust from others.
- 30:06They were unloving. They didn't choose
- 30:09the way of love. They were unmerciful.
- 30:13They didn't rejoice in forgiveness.
- 30:17And although they know the ordinance of
- 30:20God, which means the word of God,
- 30:23that those who practice such things are
- 30:27worthy of death,
- 30:30they not only do the same,
- 30:32but also give hearty approval to those
- 30:35who practice them.
- 30:38I want you to understand
- 30:40that the Apostle Paul does not say these
- 30:43things
- 30:44were worthy of death.
- 30:47He says they are
- 30:49worthy
- 30:50>> [music]
- 30:50>> of death.
- 30:52Now, has he lost his train of thought?
- 30:56No, he is framing the gospel.
- 30:59He is telling the Roman church,
- 31:02"I want to establish you.
- 31:06I want to empower [music] you to never
- 31:09suppress the truth because you're going
- 31:12to need the faith I'm bringing to you.
- 31:14I'm going to need the faith you're
- 31:15bringing to me. We're going to need each
- 31:17other's faith to keep walking with God
- 31:21because the righteous man is going to
- 31:23live [music] by faith." But then he
- 31:25says, he implies that this whole concept
- 31:29of faith
- 31:32is predicated on a bigger question.
- 31:35What are you living for?
- 31:39Faith
- 31:40that is used as an accessory [music] for
- 31:42your plans is not faith at all.
- 31:46Faith that is anchored in the truth that
- 31:49you are a vessel [music]
- 31:50and not the creator.
- 31:53Faith that is anchored in the truth that
- 31:55you are a temple and not the glory that
- 31:58fills it.
- 31:59Faith that is anchored in the commitment
- 32:03to be a faithful expression of the glory
- 32:07of him who made you, that's a faith
- 32:11that is legitimate.
- 32:13But the whole problem and the whole way
- 32:15you lose faith is when you make [music]
- 32:18your life about yourself and you start
- 32:22to worship the creature rather than
- 32:24[music] the creator.
- 32:25That's when God gives you over to crazy
- 32:28passions. That's when you start down a a
- 32:31track that is
- 32:34sin taking you further than you ever
- 32:35thought you would go. It's pride. It's
- 32:37rebellion. So, the gospel and its medium
- 32:42of faith
- 32:43must be predicated on a truth that
- 32:45answers the question, [music]
- 32:47"Why am I alive?
- 32:48What am I living for?"
- 32:50It's not yourself. It's for the glory of
- 32:53God.
- 33:01>> [music]
