- 0:02So today we're going to talk about role
- 0:03playing games. A little bit about the
- 0:05history and what they're all about. Uh
- 0:08some of you folks have played the game
- 0:10uh role playing
- 0:11games. So that's great. Uh anybody play
- 0:15like uh Fire Emblem out there? Just out
- 0:19of
- 0:20curiosity. I know some of some folks
- 0:24that that do play it and and enjoy
- 0:26playing Fire
- 0:27Emblem. So, uh, do you play Fire Emblem?
- 0:31Yes or no in
- 0:33chat? So,
- 0:36uh, anyways, uh, so there are different
- 0:39types of of of roleplaying games. You've
- 0:43got your typical tabletop role playing
- 0:46games where you you you you play a
- 0:48character or a bunch of characters and
- 0:50you roll dice uh to to uh, you know, go
- 0:54through the campaign. There's liveaction
- 0:57roleplaying where folks actually go out
- 0:59and into the, you know, into the
- 1:04uh Shakespeare festival and and wear
- 1:08medieval garb. And here's here's an
- 1:10example of of a
- 1:13uh LAR they call
- 1:16it. Um so it's uh it's it's big. It's
- 1:20huge. And um you know, way back when I
- 1:24was in college, there were some folks
- 1:26that played Dungeons and Dragons, but it
- 1:30seemed like only computer science people
- 1:32were playing it and uh had this nerd
- 1:35type um stigma to it. Nowadays, you
- 1:39know, you've got you've got uh
- 1:42celebrities playing uh Dungeons and
- 1:44Dragons and you know, it's it's it's a
- 1:47big thing. It's kind of a cool thing.
- 1:49Um, so but most of you folks are playing
- 1:53computer RPGs. Um, and uh mostly sort of
- 1:57action RPG where you know there's some
- 2:00form of combat that that is happens uh a
- 2:05lot of times in real time. Um, but a lot
- 2:07of these these RPG games uh on the
- 2:11computer are
- 2:13turnbased. Um, but they kind of break
- 2:15down into sort of, you know, two
- 2:18different sort of structures, action
- 2:19RPGs or open world RPGs. Um, everywhere
- 2:24where I was I when I was doing research
- 2:26on this, they kept calling it a sandbox
- 2:28RPG, but th this is it's not a sandbox
- 2:31RPG. You can't go off. Um, my definition
- 2:34of a sandbox game is something that you
- 2:37can actually create other games with.
- 2:39Sort of like a kid playing in a sandbox.
- 2:42um where you can you can either play,
- 2:45you know, castles or you can you can
- 2:47make um I don't know, roads and and and
- 2:50and create Formula 1 race racing in in
- 2:53in the sandbox. Um but open world RPGs
- 2:56is someplace where there's a gigantic
- 2:59vast world. It could be a continent. It
- 3:02could be a bunch of countries that you
- 3:04you can you can move around in um all
- 3:06over the place, right? So that's that to
- 3:08me is open world, not
- 3:10sandbox. Uh tactical RPGs where there
- 3:13the combat uh is is very um you know
- 3:19strategic in terms of of what you do in
- 3:22in that RPG game. um sort of different
- 3:25than action RPG game where you know you
- 3:28might you might be fighting um you know
- 3:31zombies every 5 seconds where a tactical
- 3:33RPG is where you are sort of making
- 3:37decisions and trying to figure out um
- 3:40how you can progress in in in your
- 3:42mission or campaign um by thinking about
- 3:45what you need to do. Uh and then there's
- 3:47this this uh distinction between uh
- 3:51Japanese RPGs and Western RPGs where
- 3:54Japanese RPGs are, you know, sort of the
- 3:56I guess the Fire Emblems that are out
- 3:58there where um they actually sort of um
- 4:03emphasize more of the linear progression
- 4:07of their players. Uh I'm sorry, the
- 4:09player characters and the characters in
- 4:11it. um where western RPGs tend to be
- 4:14more openw world and and uh about
- 4:18exploration uh you know and and so we're
- 4:21not going to talk too much about
- 4:23Japanese RPGs or western RPGs um but
- 4:27uh anyways uh so you know this is kind
- 4:30of like a first cut at at at putting
- 4:34together a lecture for role playing
- 4:36games. So you folks get to get to you
- 4:38know sort of uh be the guinea pigs for
- 4:41this
- 4:43lecture. So uh origin. So it is a
- 4:47history class. So it started sort of in
- 4:49the 1970s specifically 1974 was when it
- 4:52when it was the Dungeons and Dragons was
- 4:56first released. I mean they were working
- 4:58on it even before 1974. I want to say
- 5:01maybe even like 1970 or 1971. Um Gary
- 5:04Gyax and Dave Arnison were the uh game
- 5:07designers of this this incredible world
- 5:10that has become this
- 5:12phenomenon. Um, and it's basically a a
- 5:15fantasy game where you you take on some
- 5:18role of
- 5:19of, you know, originally medieval
- 5:22characters. That could be, you know, you
- 5:24could be a a a fighter, a bard or or a
- 5:29giant or um, you know, a cleric or a
- 5:33paladin that that you you play with five
- 5:36or six other uh players that are going
- 5:39to take on a
- 5:41character, right? And then a then a
- 5:43dungeon master comes and and and
- 5:46uh directs the whole game. Okay. Um and
- 5:50that that's more of about uh set into
- 5:53this fantasy sort of medieval world kind
- 5:56of setting, right? Um I don't know these
- 5:59games too much myself. Um, but I thought
- 6:03I'd just put these in because this is
- 6:04the 1970s and there the Traveler was a a
- 6:09RPG that was about a science fiction
- 6:12type type setting and Rune Quest uh was
- 6:15more like um the skill-based fantasy uh
- 6:19system. And then this uh Call of Tula uh
- 6:23came out in 1981 which was horrorbased.
- 6:25So here you can see even way back in the
- 6:28in the in the 70s and early 80s these
- 6:32types of games, you know, based off of
- 6:35the the theme um went all over the place
- 6:39and you can you can nowadays you can you
- 6:42can have sort of a onetoone correlation
- 6:43of you know a fantasy RPG u that that's
- 6:48skill-based science fiction setting. Um,
- 6:50you know, I didn't talk about it in this
- 6:52lecture, but like Star Wars has has
- 6:54their um version of an RPG game. I
- 6:56forget which one. If any of you know
- 6:58which one it is. Um, can you type it in
- 7:01chat? Um, but these were the original
- 7:07OG, you know, kind of kind of games that
- 7:10that set the the course of what an RPG
- 7:13is. And I put up here, you know, in
- 7:15terms of an RPG game, it's all about
- 7:18character de development and
- 7:19progression. And this could also be the
- 7:22the setting and um location of where the
- 7:28the players are are, you know, doing
- 7:32their campaign in, right? So the
- 7:35progression of that can also happen, you
- 7:38know, and and these characters over
- 7:40time, you know, especially these Dungeon
- 7:41and Dragon type uh role playing games,
- 7:44they they uh uh never end or sometimes,
- 7:48you know, can play forever, years and
- 7:50years, right? I've been playing my
- 7:52character for uh for I want to say three
- 7:55years now that uh you know when I go
- 7:58down and visit my friends down in um in
- 8:01San Diego when I go to Comic-Con we
- 8:04always play you know a couple rounds of
- 8:06of uh Dungeons and Dragons using the
- 8:10exact same characters we have been
- 8:11using. So, um, and and some of you folks
- 8:15have played,
- 8:17uh, RPG games, uh, and Dungeons and
- 8:21Dragons. So, hope maybe we can. I would
- 8:24love to play it in class, uh, you know,
- 8:27Dungeons and Dragons. So, I keep
- 8:30threatening to do it, but we're kind of
- 8:32running out of of,
- 8:34uh, of class time since summer's coming
- 8:38up, so we won't be able to play. But uh
- 8:41maybe we
- 8:42can. Okay, so let's talk about computer
- 8:45RPGs. Uh this started happening where
- 8:49the tabletop RPGs were in the 70s. Then
- 8:52in the 1980s, uh they started coming out
- 8:56with computers on specifically on MS
- 8:59DOSbased and this is pre Windows. All of
- 9:02you folks were were have only know about
- 9:06Windows and MacBooks and you know uh uh
- 9:09graphical user interfaces. Back then it
- 9:12was just DOSs disc operating system
- 9:14which DOSS stood for. Um and they these
- 9:17games came out on those those machines.
- 9:19Um precursors were like a col colossal
- 9:23ca cave adventure and now these text
- 9:25adventure games they're they're
- 9:27basically um an adventure game right
- 9:29where you're exploring things. In this
- 9:31case, Colossal Cave is you're you're
- 9:33spelunking in a cave, right? And so
- 9:35you're you're an adventurer trying to
- 9:38get through this cave and collecting
- 9:40things in this cave. And Zork, sort of
- 9:42the same
- 9:43thing. But here you're typing in text,
- 9:46right? Turn left, go forward,
- 9:50qua qua the potion, where you literally
- 9:53just type these in, right? and it and it
- 9:56comes back with another text message of
- 9:59what uh you're going to do next, right?
- 10:01Ask you a yes or no question. You reply
- 10:04yes or no. Okay. Um so, and then uh you
- 10:09know uh uh DND and uh Pettit 5, I think
- 10:12it's pronounced Pettit 5. I think it's
- 10:14also known as the dungeon. Um these were
- 10:16all kind of the earliest uh computer
- 10:20role playing games that were on these uh
- 10:22back then they were called mini
- 10:24computers. Um, so these were big
- 10:26gigantic, you know, roomsiz computers
- 10:28that they were on. I I played Rogue. I'm
- 10:31surprised I didn't put Rogue in here
- 10:33because Rogue was one of the first,
- 10:36um, uh, adventure games that that were
- 10:39out there. Uh and and from the original
- 10:43Rogue came Rogue likes, which is uh
- 10:46essentially a a sort of dungeon crawling
- 10:50game that has
- 10:53um uh uh what do you call that? The
- 10:57um generated levels. So uh progressively
- 11:02generated levels. And it was from this
- 11:04original Rogue game. And I played Rogue
- 11:06on a PDP1 1170 and a VAX
- 11:0911780. Um, you could look those up. Uh,
- 11:12and
- 11:14uh, again, you know, this the screen was
- 11:16all textbased, but you know, it they
- 11:19drew the the the graphics on this
- 11:22textbased machine. Um, so again, you're
- 11:25you're you're
- 11:26you're in you're this explorer in in
- 11:29this dungeon to try to get yourself out
- 11:31of this dungeon. And yes, we spent hours
- 11:33and days and weeks to try to finish it.
- 11:36And um we actually got to the end of
- 11:39that that uh that uh the game and it
- 11:43came down to a
- 11:4550/50 question and we guessed wrong so
- 11:48we lost. Um but Rogue was one of these
- 11:52original computer games. Um but it's
- 11:55more of an adventure game, you know, a
- 11:57rogue game now because of because it it
- 12:00became mainstream, you know, it's now
- 12:03its own um game genre called rogue
- 12:06likes. Um so uh but again that was I
- 12:10played that in
- 12:131981. 81. Yeah. So it' be around that
- 12:16time where Rogue came out. Um Ultima
- 12:20series open world exploration. Um and
- 12:22these the these these these games here
- 12:25uh Bard's Tale this first person dungeon
- 12:28crawler uh Might and Magic. So again,
- 12:32you know, you either played open world,
- 12:34you played dungeon or and and later on
- 12:37it became first person, right? So did I
- 12:40have a might have had a sort of Yeah. Um
- 12:43Bartsdale uh first person dungeon
- 12:46crawler. So again, these are the 1980s.
- 12:49Um and then sort of towards late 80s and
- 12:52the 90s came what's known as the golden
- 12:54age. Okay. Uh these were when these
- 12:58franchises
- 12:59uh started coming out that that are
- 13:01still in play today. And um uh what what
- 13:07uh RPGs other than WoW? Um well, I guess
- 13:10I probably already asked the question.
- 13:12Um did you do you did you folks play
- 13:14anybody play Final
- 13:16Fantasy? Um, so here the original RPG
- 13:21games came out on like the the Nintendo
- 13:25Entertainment SE system, the NES and
- 13:27then the Super NES. Um and then later on
- 13:31uh in the like in the this golden age
- 13:34period it started to shift to computers
- 13:36and all of a sudden the quality of these
- 13:39games started going crazy good because
- 13:43of um being able to do character
- 13:46customization and um you know I put this
- 13:50party based combat. So, you know, the
- 13:52original tabletop RPGs like like the
- 13:55original Dungeons and Dragons is about
- 13:57a, you know, a party based uh
- 14:00collaboration, right? You have five or
- 14:02six people going into this one quest,
- 14:05right? Or this one campaign and and
- 14:08trying to survive. And later on I um
- 14:11there's there's a a TV show that I
- 14:13really love is is called um Vox Mechina
- 14:17and that's based off of a campaign that
- 14:22was that was uh uh it's still going on
- 14:25right now created by a group called
- 14:27Critical Role and
- 14:30um they're basically pun playing
- 14:32Dungeons and Dragons on on uh YouTube
- 14:35and and Twitch, right? So, I've listened
- 14:38to them a bunch of few times. I forget
- 14:41which what they they what campaign
- 14:43they're working on now, but it was the
- 14:45original um Box Mina campaign that they
- 14:48turned the the TV show based off of.
- 14:53So uh you know but but in this golden
- 14:57age
- 14:58period storydriven narratives have
- 15:01become huge where now you can actually
- 15:03have you know text that comes out and
- 15:06talks about what the backstory it could
- 15:10be the current story. It could be
- 15:11potential things that are you're going
- 15:14to be encountering later on. and also uh
- 15:18exploration of it has had become huge
- 15:21where you're you're going through this
- 15:23gigantic size map um all the all through
- 15:27this golden age of of RPG
- 15:31games.
- 15:33So, oh, are they really Grace? That is
- 15:36awesome. I hope so. Um uh we we haven't
- 15:41had time to finish. I think I think
- 15:42they're right now on the third. They're
- 15:46they're they're they're in their uh
- 15:48their third season. So, but I haven't I
- 15:51haven't got to it yet.
- 15:55So again, the golden age, this golden
- 15:59age period of of late 80s and the 90s,
- 16:02Final Fantasy on the on the Nintendo
- 16:05Entertainment System,
- 16:071987, 1992, Ultima 7, and again, this
- 16:12was on on uh the PC DOSs system. Okay,
- 16:16this is pre Windows. 1994, Elder Scrolls
- 16:20came out also.
- 16:22um in 1995. I don't know much about this
- 16:24Chrono Trigger, but um you know, it's
- 16:27about traveling in time. So, uh I I
- 16:30thought that was kind of cool that they
- 16:32created a RPG game about time travel. Um
- 16:35I don't know much about it. I'm going to
- 16:37have to research it some more. Um and
- 16:39Fallout Fallout, I know some of my other
- 16:42students have played Fall Fallout. And
- 16:44then there's this really great game
- 16:46called Balders's Gate. Um and this ca
- 16:48didn't this came straight out on
- 16:50Windows. And in 1998, um, Windows 95,
- 16:54Windows 95 came out, and Windows 98, the
- 16:57better Windows, came out in '98, and
- 16:58Baldersgate, I think, came out on
- 17:00Windows
- 17:0198. So, and we'll we'll we'll talk a
- 17:04little bit about Balders's Gate, too,
- 17:05because basically Balders's Gate is an
- 17:07is a a souped up version of Dungeons and
- 17:11Dragon on the computer.
- 17:16So following the golden age of the 1990s
- 17:19is
- 17:20uh 3D RPG games. So threedimensional RPG
- 17:25games. So happens to be that companies
- 17:27like Nvidia and ATI started creating
- 17:31excellent video game uh cards. So back
- 17:36before the 19 the
- 17:401990s like early n uh mid1 1990s came
- 17:44out the first Nvidia cards there were
- 17:47some 40
- 17:48plus 3D graphics companies all trying to
- 17:52do uh 3D graphics and it ended up being
- 17:56only three companies that kind of made
- 17:58it uh uh ATI which was bought out by AMD
- 18:03and then of course Nvidia And you folks
- 18:05all know about
- 18:06Nvidia and Nvidia I know is kind of near
- 18:09and near and dear to my heart because I
- 18:11was an employee of Nvidia for many
- 18:13years. So
- 18:15um these cards also created uh these
- 18:19excellent games. Okay. So in 2000 Duzex
- 18:24uh firsterson shooter mechanics. So the
- 18:26real true firsterson shooters started
- 18:29coming out right. um original uh
- 18:31first-person shooter was uh Doom in in
- 18:361993. What what what I think it was
- 18:401983. Um you know, but uh RPGs started
- 18:45becoming firsterson
- 18:47uh views in it as opposed to, you know,
- 18:50top-down
- 18:52uh world kind of or text textbased type
- 18:55RPG games, right? And uh yes, so
- 19:02Uh in 2004, World of Warcraft came out.
- 19:06This massively multiplayer online game
- 19:09or MMO RPG. This was um a you know
- 19:13defining moment when World of Warcraft
- 19:16had millions of players all logged on at
- 19:19the same time playing playing these
- 19:21campaigns through there. Um I watched a
- 19:24couple of World of Warcraft uh games out
- 19:27there. never got a chance to play it
- 19:30myself, but uh just an amazing amazing
- 19:33time when these games all came out. Mass
- 19:36Effect and came out in 2007 introducing
- 19:39cinematic action RPG RPG type elements.
- 19:43Okay. Um, cinematic being the type of
- 19:46camera where, you know, if you think of
- 19:49of, you know, sort of a cutscene where,
- 19:52you know, you you you pan in, zoom in,
- 19:54then zoom back out with the camera, it
- 19:56it it it becomes fluid and and also part
- 20:00of an important part of the the game.
- 20:03Um, but also Mass Effect had uh, you
- 20:06know, action elements into it, too.
- 20:09So the these 3D graphics cards just just
- 20:14uh jumped the quality of these games and
- 20:17it's these games that have now uh you
- 20:20know still are in existence today,
- 20:22right? Um where uh now there's from 2010
- 20:28is this modern era type uh situation. So
- 20:31you know originally we had the 70s which
- 20:33were first time an RPG sort of came out
- 20:36and tech generally tech space based then
- 20:39the 80s and 90s came out with a with a
- 20:41golden era right and then then the the
- 20:44the 2000s came the 3D
- 20:48um graphics cards that changed the world
- 20:50and now today we have this modern era
- 20:52where the Witcher and and Dark Souls and
- 20:56you know Dark Souls is has has now
- 20:59created its own you know Uh uh what
- 21:03souls? What's it called? Um
- 21:06uh souls. I'm sorry. What? My mind
- 21:10blank. Uh where where there's this, you
- 21:12know, you you you can you can die, but
- 21:16then you can come right back in and and
- 21:17and and live. Um uh souls soul sport,
- 21:22but I'm I forget it right now.
- 21:25uh maybe some of you folks can help me
- 21:28uh what what the term is for it. Um but
- 21:31like the Elder Scrolls with uh you know
- 21:34this openw world RPG which is just
- 21:36gigantic, right? And then there's
- 21:38there's there's Balders's Gate, right?
- 21:40Again, Balders's Gate came out way back
- 21:42when and just every iteration of it has
- 21:45be been amazing. And then there's this,
- 21:48you know, Cyberpunk 2077, which is uh
- 21:52sci-fi futuristic openw world
- 21:55RPG. Uh, you know, so there's just a lot
- 21:59of great stuff that that has has come up
- 22:01with this, you know, uh, sort of the
- 22:04modern type type
- 22:06games. So, let's talk a little bit about
- 22:09just the two of these, Dungeons and
- 22:10Dragons and and Balders's Gate. Anybody
- 22:13have any questions? Go ahead and type it
- 22:15in chat.
- 22:19So, every everybody good. Give me a
- 22:21thumbs up if everything's good so
- 22:28far. Okay.
- 22:30Um, great. So, Dungeons and Dragons and
- 22:33Balders's
- 22:34Gate. Thumbs up, please. Uh again, the
- 22:39Dungeons and Dragons came out in
- 22:411974. Uh written by Gary Gagak and David
- 22:44Arnison, and it's about uh this
- 22:47collaborative storytelling game with
- 22:49rules. Okay. Uh you know, your your your
- 22:53dungeon master uh sets the
- 22:56stage and um talks about what each
- 23:00person is uh going to do. or you create
- 23:04your own character and you you you let
- 23:07the dungeon master know what what your
- 23:10character is all about and the dungeon
- 23:12master will construct a complete
- 23:16campaign based off of what your
- 23:18characters can do or not do. um as and
- 23:22then the dungeon master will also follow
- 23:24some sort of campaign that could um you
- 23:27know you you you can go off and and
- 23:30purchase campaigns and things like that
- 23:31and just go by that. Um but the the
- 23:34games that that I've played is uh
- 23:37actually we've done both. We we we've
- 23:39done the the the essential um Dungeons
- 23:43and Dragon set as well as uh uh having
- 23:47our dungeon master create our own
- 23:49campaign from
- 23:50scratch and then started us off at a
- 23:54different uh a certain character level.
- 23:56I want to say we start off at maybe
- 23:58eight or nine in character level um as
- 24:02opposed to starting from a character
- 24:04level one. So that's the beauty about
- 24:06these Dungeons and Dragon games is that
- 24:09you have character progression in it.
- 24:12Okay? And and the character progression
- 24:16could be based off of the skills and
- 24:18abilities that the character can do. And
- 24:20also it could be a changing personality
- 24:23of what the the character do. It could
- 24:25be you could be wielding, you know,
- 24:27first an axe and then all of a sudden
- 24:29you go back and now you you you you can
- 24:32you you've learned magic. say for
- 24:34instance or your weapon that you have
- 24:36has certain magical powers to it. So um
- 24:40and those would be used to uh either
- 24:44during combat um or or or or change the
- 24:48the way that
- 24:49the progression of the story happens.
- 24:53Okay. So you know you've got all of
- 24:55these different ways of of creating
- 24:59characters, creating the story and the
- 25:01story line. Um and then uh these the
- 25:05these characters can uh have uh a race
- 25:09or a class. So a race being a human,
- 25:12elf, dwarf, halfling, orc, goblin, and
- 25:15then a class uh within the race of of a
- 25:19barbarian, a bard, a fighter, a ranger,
- 25:21cleric. So if you you can have a race of
- 25:25a bunch of humans and then a class that
- 25:28has um uh it could be a a guild of of of
- 25:34all barbarians say or it could be you
- 25:37know for us we we have um in our our
- 25:42campaign you know I'm I'm basically a
- 25:45ranger uh with I'm an elf
- 25:48ranger and then uh then we have uh uh
- 25:53someone who's who's who's a cleric and a
- 25:57monk slunk that's a healer. So, it's
- 26:00good to have a healer in your in your uh
- 26:03uh your group. Um and then there's
- 26:07uh a bard who can use music to to uh uh
- 26:13to help with with special spells and
- 26:16skills. Um, and then uh like for
- 26:19instance, my nephew likes playing a a
- 26:21giant barbarian. Um, so you know, you
- 26:24can create your your character and then
- 26:27based off of the types of race and
- 26:29class, you can uh either inherit certain
- 26:32skills or
- 26:34equipment. Um and then uh uh you know
- 26:39then then the dungeon master will will
- 26:42you know then use those certain um
- 26:44skills to also construct the story
- 26:46around based off of what in case our our
- 26:48our dungeon master um likes to do is is
- 26:53uh you know create uh enemies that uh
- 26:58can work for or against uh the type of
- 27:02players that are in it. Um, and then,
- 27:04uh, we kind of make our own backstory of
- 27:07our our our player character. So, again,
- 27:10it's a collaborative party based
- 27:12structure and
- 27:14cooperation between um, all the
- 27:17different, in our case, we have five or
- 27:19six um,
- 27:22different players that go up against
- 27:25this one campaign. And and the dungeon
- 27:28master is not an enemy. Even though the
- 27:31dungeon master controls when when the uh
- 27:34the different um uh enemies come in and
- 27:38uh you know sets the stage, right? Uh
- 27:41the dungeon master is actually there to
- 27:43to help us progress through the story.
- 27:46Um so uh you know and and we we can we
- 27:51can end up in say for instance starting
- 27:54in this forest and then all of a sudden
- 27:56the there's there's um a pool of green
- 28:00something that it's liquid not
- 28:03necessarily um a pool of water but it's
- 28:06a glowing green thing he'll he'll he'll
- 28:09you he
- 28:11uh came up with right uh and then we
- 28:14have to uh either
- 28:16find stuff around the the forest. Or if
- 28:19there was something that maybe one of
- 28:21our um
- 28:24uh our our our teammates is is carrying
- 28:28something that can figure out what that
- 28:30green thing is, right? So, we have to
- 28:32try to understand what that green things
- 28:34is. It could it could be something that
- 28:35we end up having to drink in order to uh
- 28:38go down into the dungeon so that we can
- 28:41um strengthen ourselves with it. Right?
- 28:44So, uh, all of these different types of
- 28:46skills that that that the dungeon
- 28:48master, um, guides us
- 28:53through. And of course, there's a
- 28:56specific goal that that the campaign
- 28:58will end up having to to to uh go
- 29:02through. Uh, and in uh many cases, it's,
- 29:06you know, destroy five goblins that are
- 29:10in the dungeon, right? That kind of
- 29:12thing.
- 29:14So uh the the the game loop of this uh
- 29:19of Dungeons and Dragons. So the the
- 29:21dungeon master describes the environment
- 29:23and situation. So sets the stage, right?
- 29:26Then the players describe their intended
- 29:28actions. So, we would go about saying,
- 29:31you know, okay, the the stage is set and
- 29:34then the players would say, okay, um
- 29:38let's have the the uh the bard uh go in
- 29:43and use music to uh either cast a spell
- 29:48that that might find out that you can
- 29:51use it to open the door, say, right? Um
- 29:54and then we use dice. Um, actually I I
- 29:58have my This is a very heavy D20 here
- 30:03that is uh I got from
- 30:06Comic-Con. It's a solid metal thing. So
- 30:08I don't use it when we play, but I keep
- 30:10it on my desk here. Um but you know
- 30:13there's you know seven different die or
- 30:15five different dice that that you would
- 30:16use to determine the the either the
- 30:19abilities it could be initiative you can
- 30:22be rolling thing you know dice for for
- 30:24certain you know
- 30:26uh skills and attacking that kind of
- 30:29thing you use that dice for movement
- 30:31moving forward uh and so
- 30:34forth um experience and advancement
- 30:37that's the whole uh thing about these
- 30:39campaigns is that you defeat these
- 30:41monsters and complete these quests to
- 30:43gain experience points basically so that
- 30:45you can go I I mentioned earlier we
- 30:47started at characters level eight or
- 30:49nine and um you know uh if you start
- 30:53with a campaign that is really at the
- 30:55very beginning right then you if you
- 30:58complete that campaign then you can you
- 31:00can level up your everybody's characters
- 31:02to to the next level
- 31:04right and with that next level
- 31:09uh using the dungeons and Dragons
- 31:12manual, you can you can get certain
- 31:14powers and abilities based off of that
- 31:16level. Actually, I should have showed
- 31:19I've got I've got the the player players
- 31:21handbooks and the the the monster books
- 31:24and I've got all that set. I should have
- 31:27should
- 31:28have had a I show showed it to you
- 31:31folks. Um
- 31:34uh but anyways, role playing game
- 31:35elements here, right? So,
- 31:37uh Dungeons and Dragons. Actually, we're
- 31:40in the the the fifth edition. Why did I
- 31:42put fifth edition rules of of character
- 31:45creation, combat spells, casting,
- 31:47progress? Oh, I think this was because
- 31:49this was based off of um the
- 31:52requirements for Balders's Gate.
- 31:54Balders's Gate, I think, started off
- 31:56with D&D second edition rules, okay,
- 31:59versus the the current um fourth or
- 32:02fifth
- 32:03edition. Okay. Um again, it's about the
- 32:06characters, race, and classes. and um
- 32:10party based structure of tactical
- 32:11combats and positions. Um I believe I
- 32:14don't maybe you folks can can look it up
- 32:17too. Balders's Gate is more
- 32:20turnbased. So uh you you you you have to
- 32:24you
- 32:25know each person rolls. you you you you
- 32:29you you do movements and actions based
- 32:32off of that role and then the um the
- 32:36enemies would would follow suit. Okay.
- 32:39So, it'll be one at a time versus
- 32:41real-time
- 32:42tactics. Um but it's still the same
- 32:45thing. Storytell telling and and and
- 32:48world world building and uh going on
- 32:51quests and
- 32:53exploring. Okay. Oh, actually, yeah.
- 32:57So, um, yeah, I'm sorry. I kind of
- 33:00messed that whole thing up. So, I went I
- 33:02didn't realize that, you know, talking
- 33:03about Dungeons and Dragons that when I I
- 33:06I kept talking about Dungeons and
- 33:08Dragons, but Balders's Gate 1998, right,
- 33:12is this this Dungeons and Dragons second
- 33:14edition. I'm sorry, I totally did not uh
- 33:18get that, but anyways, hopefully you
- 33:20folks did. U and then there's a 2023
- 33:23modern age version of Balders's Gate,
- 33:25right? where the original Balders's Gate
- 33:28was based off of that second edition
- 33:31rules of of Dungeons and Dragon. This
- 33:34has got now um a change based off of 3D
- 33:39graphics that is just
- 33:41incredible with how this stuff looks.
- 33:44And there's cinematic cutscenes and
- 33:46dialogue that now come into play where
- 33:48the original ones had was based off of
- 33:50text stuff. So, you read text, um, you
- 33:53know, you you you you you
- 33:55you do something based off of that text
- 33:58and now there's uh you the the
- 34:01storytelling and actually the the
- 34:03characters that are in there are are
- 34:05fully voiced and you they they talk and
- 34:08then based off of what they say, you
- 34:11answer um and and uh you know go into
- 34:16this game
- 34:18um with with that type of uh
- 34:20interaction. activity with this
- 34:23storytelling and and narrative that that
- 34:26the the cinematic cut scenes and the
- 34:27dialogue all participate in. Okay. And
- 34:30so you as the the player um get to
- 34:33choose and have consequences based off
- 34:35of those those choices. Okay. Um and
- 34:40also what's nice about, you know, the
- 34:42Balders's Gate 3 is that it went into
- 34:44cross-platform play. So all of the
- 34:47original games were just on PC, right?
- 34:49You couldn't have you couldn't play on
- 34:52the PlayStation 3 and then also play on
- 34:54the PC. Now with cross-platform play,
- 34:58you can you can you can play on Xbox,
- 35:00you can play on PlayStation, you you can
- 35:02play on PC and then also play
- 35:04multiplayer all across all the different
- 35:07platforms. So this modern age game is
- 35:10just incredible.
- 35:13Okay. And lastly, we'll just kind of
- 35:15talk about RPG games as they've, you
- 35:18know, since they've gotten so popular,
- 35:20they they're they're now these
- 35:21franchises are now worth, you know,
- 35:23billions of dollars for their uh for
- 35:26their their game development companies,
- 35:28okay? So that they even make movies out
- 35:31of it. So, Dungeons and Dragons, Honor
- 35:33Among Thieves, right here, starring
- 35:35Chris Pine. This is this was a good
- 35:37movie. I liked it. Anybody anybody like
- 35:40uh any of these role playing game
- 35:41movies? Um you know, Last of Us is more
- 35:45uh you know, horror, action, adventure,
- 35:48but I put it in here because the you
- 35:50know, the character development on these
- 35:52is just amazing and I just loved Last of
- 35:54Us series. Um
- 35:58uh the acting is just great. um World of
- 36:01Warcraft, you know, Uncharted, uh and
- 36:04then of course The Legend of Vox
- 36:05Machina, which we'll talk about here.
- 36:07The Witcher that with um oh, what's his
- 36:09name? I don't uh I watched the last
- 36:12couple of ones, but I don't think he's
- 36:14going to be the um that that the actor.
- 36:17What's my mind's blacking right now? Um
- 36:20but anyways, uh I think they're moving
- 36:23ahead with uh um Thor's brother. What's
- 36:27his name?
- 36:29Yeah, the guy who plays Superman.
- 36:31Yes, thanks, Grace. Um, yeah. Gosh,
- 36:34what's his name? I I would I would have
- 36:37loved him to continue. Um, Henry Cavl.
- 36:41Yes, that's it. Thank you. Um, but
- 36:45anyways, I think he just is got uh got
- 36:48old with it and thinks it should be best
- 36:50done with with somebody else. Yeah. So,
- 36:53Hemsworth is the new guy. Um, but
- 36:57anyway, the legend of Vox Machina right
- 36:59here. So, this is uh based off of a
- 37:03campaign done by Critical Role. They
- 37:05they were on on, you know, you can you
- 37:08can log on to the web stuff and uh web
- 37:11browser and follow them and I followed
- 37:14them a couple of times in in in on um on
- 37:18Twitch. So there's there's also a couple
- 37:22other people that I that I might forget
- 37:24their names right now. I haven't been
- 37:26listening to them recent times, but here
- 37:29here's the uh the the the campaign was
- 37:33called, you know, Vox Men or whatever.
- 37:35And these are the characters themselves.
- 37:37So this is uh Parival, Keelis, um
- 37:41Scandlin, Pike,
- 37:45um Grog, uh Vax and Vex. These are
- 37:49brothers and sisters and they all have
- 37:51different uh roles. And uh Kelis is this
- 37:55half- elf druid that does shapeshifting
- 37:59and can interact with nature um as well
- 38:03as turn into animals. Uh
- 38:06Pike is a a magical cleric. Scandlin is
- 38:11a is this bard who uses magic and can
- 38:14use magic to help uh him uh him fly. As
- 38:19well as being a bard he he uses
- 38:22music. Uh Greg uh Grog I'm see I'm sorry
- 38:26is a barbarian and obviously he's a
- 38:29giant with with with great strength and
- 38:32uh also wields a great uh uh
- 38:37weapon. Um, Vax is this half-felt rogue
- 38:41paladin druid who uh actually I won't
- 38:45give any uh spoiler alerts, but he sells
- 38:50his soul. Um uh Vex is this half elf
- 38:54ranger that is an uh her strength is is
- 38:57an archer. And all of these uh
- 39:00characters have um special abilities
- 39:03that given special special weapons um
- 39:08does does very well with that special
- 39:11weapon. Okay. Uh Henry Caval, thank you
- 39:15Anand. Um that's that's the actor in uh
- 39:18The Witcher. So,
- 39:22um, anyway, so this is that campaign
- 39:24that was turned into, uh, a TV series
- 39:27and, um, as you can see, the characters
- 39:30are just amazing in terms of what what
- 39:34what they can do. And then, um, uh, you
- 39:39know, this that, you know, you you check
- 39:42it out. Um, maybe it's just me, but I I
- 39:46just enjoy it. So anyways, that's role
- 39:49playing games. Um hopefully you folks uh
- 39:53will maybe play Balders's Gate or play
- 39:57some of these other role playing games
- 39:58that are out there. Um I want to do it.
- 40:02I want to play it. So uh anyways,
- 40:08uh questions, anyone?
