1. 0:10I'm right outside Clockwork in San Francisco,
2. 0:12a company that's created a robot
3. 0:14that can do your nails in 10 minutes
4. 0:17for just under $10.
5. 0:18I love when beauty and tech combine,
6. 0:21but I'm curious to see how this robot
7. 0:22is going to paint the perfect polish
8. 0:24without leaving a mess or hurting my nails.
9. 0:27So let's go check it out.
10. 0:29You go to your appointment with bare nails,
11. 0:32so no gel polish,
12. 0:33but if you have regular nail polish on,
13. 0:36you can remove it there.
14. 0:37Then you pick your color
15. 0:38and have a nail-polish cartridge made for the machine.
16. 0:42Clockwork offers colors from brands
17. 0:44including OPI, CND, Essie, and L'Oréal.
18. 0:48So, we are working on base and topcoat,
19. 0:51but right now we've picked polishes
20. 0:53that don't need that necessarily.
21. 0:56Caroline: Cute! It does a little test patch.
22. 0:58Renuka: The trick to getting a really good coat
23. 1:00is to be able to stay still.
24. 1:02And every time I say that,
25. 1:03people tend to tense up,
26. 1:06but really what you want to do
27. 1:07is completely relax.
28. 1:09And so the band holds you in place,
29. 1:11and you want to just relax your whole arm,
30. 1:14and then say the word "ready."
31. 1:16And then the robot goes ahead and paints your nails.
32. 1:18Caroline: Ready.
33. 1:26[gasps] It is absolutely perfect.
34. 1:31Whoa, it's so pigmented, too.
35. 1:35Renuka: We're using what's called
36. 1:36a structured-light camera.
37. 1:38So it's basically a 3D camera.
38. 1:40So when you paint your nails,
39. 1:41you'll see some lights flashing,
40. 1:43and that's the camera
41. 1:45taking a ton of pictures really quickly.
42. 1:47And it takes that and builds
43. 1:49a 3D map of your fingernail,
44. 1:51and that gets shipped to an AI that we've built
45. 1:55that basically figures out
46. 1:56where the edges of your nails are.
47. 1:59And then it instructs the algorithms
48. 2:01to actually go and paint,
49. 2:04you know, deposit polish in the right places.
50. 2:07Caroline: The belt really keeps my finger in place.
51. 2:11I've never been this still.
52. 2:14Renuka: So, when a human is painting a nail,
53. 2:16they'll put some polish on,
54. 2:17and there may be some streaks or thin spots,
55. 2:20and they go over and do it again
56. 2:22to get you an opaque coat.
57. 2:24But for a robot, really,
58. 2:25we try to do it all in one go
59. 2:28so that at the end of it,
60. 2:29you still get a very opaque coat
61. 2:31but it takes much less time to do it.

63. 2:35And there you go.
64. 2:39I love it so much.
65. 2:41Yay! OK.
66. 2:43So, now we get a little bit
67. 2:44of quick-dry coat in there.
68. 2:47Renuka: We really think of ourselves
69. 2:48as complementary to nail salons.
70. 2:51So we are, say, the fast-casual restaurants,
71. 2:54and they are the sit-down restaurants.
72. 2:56So there's a time and place for both things, right?
73. 2:59When you want an elaborate, relaxing service,
74. 3:02you have the nail salon.
75. 3:03If you want to quickly get something done
76. 3:05or change colors in between nail-salon services,
77. 3:08you can come to us.
78. 3:10Having a robot do my nails that accurately
79. 3:13was the most convenient beauty service
80. 3:14that I have tried.
81. 3:16I barely felt anything,
82. 3:18and I was really impressed that the nail polish
83. 3:20wasn't running onto my fingers.
84. 3:22So the fingernail-scanning technology
85. 3:24is extremely precise.
86. 3:27I still love my gel polishes and nail art,
87. 3:30but this is definitely something
88. 3:31I'm hoping will reach more places,
89. 3:33like office buildings or retail stores,
90. 3:35for that on-the-go service.
