Roblox's Horrifying Quiz Game (i-ceusernames) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01Imagine you're playing Roblox online
- 0:02with some friends when you find a game
- 0:04in your recommended that looks so bad
- 0:05it's almost funny.
- 0:07You join the lobby and realize it's one
- 0:08of those quiz games where you have to
- 0:09guess the name of a character. At first
- 0:11everything seems harmless. However, as
- 0:13time goes on something is happening in
- 0:15the background of the server.
- 0:17Well, it turns out what you're playing
- 0:18is not actually just a Roblox game, but
- 0:21instead is a program designed to write
- 0:22down and upload your account information
- 0:24online all without you ever realizing
- 0:26it. My name is Sistix and this is the
- 0:28story of Roblox's horrifying quiz game.
- 0:36Roblox is no stranger to low quality
- 0:38games. Mostly because there will always
- 0:40be a younger audience willing to play
- 0:41and finance them. Now, if you've never
- 0:43heard of a quiz game, the formula is
- 0:45pretty simple. All you do is take
- 0:47pictures of popular characters and spam
- 0:48them into a baseplate for people to
- 0:50guess the name of. The quiz game we'll
- 0:52be looking at today titled Guess the
- 0:53Character was no exception to this
- 0:55formula. However, it did have some
- 0:57strange unique features. For example,
- 0:59one of the quizzes you could play was
- 1:00solely dedicated to guessing the
- 1:01username of cancelled YouTubers.
- 1:03Something that doesn't really fit in
- 1:05with the other options like SpongeBob
- 1:06names or Spider-Verse characters. In the
- 1:08object show quiz around halfway through
- 1:10you could find a picture of the
- 1:11character Butcher from The Boys.
- 1:13Additionally, in the Dandy's World quiz
- 1:14for some reason there's a picture of
- 1:15this guy named Bandy. If you aren't
- 1:17familiar with any of the things I just
- 1:19said, just know that they aren't related
- 1:20but will be important later. Finally,
- 1:23the weirdest part of all of these
- 1:24additions was the developers' inclusion
- 1:26of fake voice chat. Now, the idea of
- 1:28adding bots to your game is nothing
- 1:30original. However, it's pretty rare to
- 1:31see a game that will go as far as adding
- 1:33fake VC. Inside of the lobby there are
- 1:35two bots that use this feature. I'm a
- 1:37real girl [music] 52 and an unnamed bot
- 1:40at the left corner. I'm a real girl can
- 1:42be found at the front of the lobby with
- 1:43a super unsettling wave animation.
- 1:45Around every 10 seconds [music] she
- 1:46repeats the phrase, "Hello. I love
- 1:49playing this game. It's so so fun. Can
- 1:51you guess [music] the character?" If you
- 1:53head over to the unnamed bot at the left
- 1:55of the map, he says something a little
- 1:56more unsettling. His message goes, "Hey
- 1:59you, I see you. I hear you. I know
- 2:02you're there.
- 2:03Guess the character. I bet you can't do
- 2:05it. I love this game. I love this game."
- 2:08Obviously, all of this was pretty
- 2:09strange, but little did anyone know that
- 2:11we were just scratching the surface.
- 2:14As more people played this game, a
- 2:16hidden feature was eventually
- 2:17discovered. That being a secret area in
- 2:19the map. You see, for every 5 minutes
- 2:21you're in the game, the server
- 2:23automatically rewards you with a free
- 2:24skip. Something that can be used on a
- 2:26question when you don't know [music] the
- 2:27answer.
- 2:28The option to skip a question is only
- 2:30available when you're in a quiz. When
- 2:32you walk back into the lobby, the choice
- 2:33to skip is removed altogether. However,
- 2:36someone realized that by going to the
- 2:37corner of the map, the option to skip
- 2:39would reappear. By using your skip, the
- 2:41floor disappears and takes you into a
- 2:43secret room. Inside of the secret room
- 2:45was a red doorway along with a
- 2:47text-to-speech narrator repeating the
- 2:48following phrase.
- 2:51>> Alpha. Bravo. Hotel. Sierra. Alpha.
- 2:55Bravo.
- 2:59>> By walking up to the red door, a puzzle
- 3:00will appear on your screen.
- 3:02You do have the option to reset your
- 3:03character, but doing so will just send
- 3:05you back to the main lobby.
- 3:07So, at the moment, we have a few
- 3:08different dots to connect. There's the
- 3:10audio message, the puzzle, and now this
- 3:12red door. As I'm sure a lot of you
- 3:14already know, Alpha, Bravo, Hotel, and
- 3:16Sierra [music] are all words derived
- 3:18from the military alphabet. By taking
- 3:20the first letter of each of these words,
- 3:21we get A B H S A B. This alone isn't
- 3:26much to go off of. However, a lot more
- 3:27becomes clear after finishing the
- 3:29puzzle.
- 3:30If you enter the red door and piece this
- 3:32image back together, you get the picture
- 3:33of an eye along with the text, "Someone
- 3:35is watching" written into the photo.
- 3:37After completing the puzzle, your player
- 3:39is kicked from the game along with the
- 3:40message, "@ICUsernames".
- 3:43Now, there's a feature within most quiz
- 3:45games on Roblox that's actually pretty
- 3:47important to bring up here. Whenever you
- 3:48skip an answer in a quiz game, not only
- 3:51do you get to walk past the answer
- 3:52without typing, but usually that answer
- 3:54is also placed in the chat in case of
- 3:56some kind of bug that prevents you from
- 3:57walking forward. With this in mind, what
- 4:00happens when we use a skip to enter the
- 4:01secret room? Well, in the chat, the
- 4:03answer that's pasted is the message dot
- 4:05org. With this final piece of
- 4:07information, we can now put together all
- 4:09of these elements to form the sentence
- 4:11someone is watching at icyusernames.org.
- 4:14By going to icyusernames, we get the
- 4:16exact same red door we see in the secret
- 4:18room along with the option to type
- 4:20[music] in a password. At this point, I
- 4:21was pretty happy to have gotten this far
- 4:23virtually on my own. However, when I
- 4:25typed in that string of letters from
- 4:26earlier, my happiness quickly turned
- 4:28into something else when a list of
- 4:30Roblox usernames appeared on the
- 4:31website. The disturbing part was that my
- 4:33own username was a part of this list
- 4:35along with my country and a timestamp.
- 4:38Well, thinking back to what I did in the
- 4:39game, I retraced my steps, and that's
- 4:41when I realized that by completing
- 4:43certain quizzes, your Roblox account
- 4:45information, that being your player ID,
- 4:47country, avatar profile, all of these
- 4:49would be sent to the website and
- 4:51published in real time. If you remember
- 4:53earlier when I said that these quizzes
- 4:54would come up later, this is what I
- 4:56meant. So, that leads into the question,
- 4:58why would somebody set up this project
- 5:00to collect and upload account
- 5:01information? Well, there's actually
- 5:03three theories. The first theory is that
- 5:05this website is collecting Roblox
- 5:07traffic and feeding it to advertisers
- 5:09for profit. [music] That may sound a bit
- 5:10conspiratorial, but the logic is this.
- 5:12With how many bots there are online
- 5:14today, how do you determine who is real
- 5:16when collecting and selling information?
- 5:18Well, it seems this developer decided to
- 5:20do so by creating a highly advanced
- 5:22captcha targeted specifically towards
- 5:24children. Or in other words, a Roblox
- 5:26Dandy's World quiz that only a younger
- 5:28audience could complete. Something that
- 5:30proves you are both human and a highly
- 5:32marketable demographic.
- 5:34Okay, but that's only theory one. What
- 5:36about theory two? Well, theory two is
- 5:38actually a little more realistic. That
- 5:40being that this game is not some large
- 5:41data stealing empire, but instead is
- 5:43actually a project dedicated around
- 5:45modern digital literacy. One thing
- 5:47you'll notice throughout the Roblox game
- 5:48and the website is that there isn't
- 5:50actually a lot of security. Almost to a
- 5:52point where it seems like the creator
- 5:53wanted to be discovered. In fact, if you
- 5:56open up inspect element on
- 5:57icyusernames.org,
- 5:59not only are you able to find the
- 6:00password in the HTML code, but also
- 6:02right under it is a hidden comment from
- 6:03the developer which reads, "So much data
- 6:06is exchanged without us even knowing
- 6:07it." How many people do you think missed
- 6:09this message?
- 6:11Now, let's [music] take the Roblox game.
- 6:13Why would the developer create this
- 6:14hidden room if they were actually trying
- 6:16to keep the information being published
- 6:17a secret? Yes, it's a bit cryptic, but
- 6:20most people could easily put the pieces
- 6:21together given enough time.
- 6:23So, is this something nefarious or is it
- 6:25[music] just a passion project? Well,
- 6:27finally that leads into theory three.
- 6:30What if it's both? By making your data
- 6:32mining Roblox game look creepy and tap
- 6:34into the horror genre, naturally [music]
- 6:35more people are going to play it. What
- 6:37if you wanted the game to get caught so
- 6:39more people would engage with it out of
- 6:41curiosity? [music]
- 6:42While many discussions have gone back
- 6:43and forth on these different theories,
- 6:45the good news is that the information
- 6:46being published on this website [music]
- 6:48is already both online and public.
- 6:51Things like your username or your
- 6:52country aren't too dangerous to have
- 6:53online by themselves. However, if this
- 6:56game is some kind of advanced CAPTCHA,
- 6:58that could raise some concern.
- 6:59Ultimately, what I think we should take
- 7:01away from this experience and what the
- 7:02developers either intentionally or
- 7:04unintentionally hint at is the idea that
- 7:06our personal information is exchanged
- 7:08all of the time, mostly without us ever
- 7:10even realizing it. Today, it's not a
- 7:12question of if our info is shared, but a
- 7:14question of who is getting it. So,
- 7:16please, if you take anything away from
- 7:18today, remember to think critically
- 7:19about the media you give your
- 7:21information to. Not necessarily to a
- 7:23point of paranoia, but just logically,
- 7:25if something is asking for this
- 7:26information, why do you think it's
- 7:28asking [music] for it? Anyway, with all
- 7:30that being said, I want to thank all the
- 7:31members who've supported the channel.
- 7:33And if you want to support the channel
- 7:34in another way, well, I actually have a
- 7:35cool little video showing you
- 7:37potentially how. With all of that being
- 7:39said, thank you all for watching.
- 7:42>> Hey you. Yes, you. Did you know you can
- 7:45use code I love stealing for $5 off on
- 7:47sys-x.com?
- 7:49You could buy a t-shirt or a phone case.
- 7:52All for $5 off. Order now before Order
- 7:55now while supplies last. Use code I love
- 7:57stealing. Did [music] you know?
