- 0:28Hey guys, Metal Jesus here and welcome
- 0:30to part two of my epic 2,000mi road trip
- 0:35across four different states. In the
- 0:37first video, we traveled from Medford,
- 0:39Oregon down to Reno, Nevada, and saw
- 0:43some amazing, amazing sites along the
- 0:45way, including Mount Shasta. In Reno, we
- 0:48checked into the Grand Sierra Resort and
- 0:50Casino. Did some bowling as well as some
- 0:53arcade games, and then we visited two
- 0:56retro gaming stores in the area. That
- 0:59was really fun. Plus, we also went to
- 1:01the Reno Public Market and checked out
- 1:03Junkie Clothing Exchange
- 1:06as well as ventured down to Lake Tahoe
- 1:09for more beautiful scenery. These videos
- 1:13are full of that stuff. And so, if you
- 1:15missed that video, you're definitely
- 1:16going to want to check it out. But in
- 1:19part two, we're going to drive down to
- 1:20the Sacramento, California area and
- 1:23attend the Fire and Ice Retro Gaming
- 1:26Expo. This is a brand new expo in the
- 1:29area and I found some really cool stuff
- 1:32I'm going to share with you at the end
- 1:33of this video. So, let's take a look.
- 1:37[Music]
- 1:52[Music]
- 1:54Today our goal is to drive from Reno,
- 1:56Nevada down to the Sacramento,
- 1:57California area. And thankfully, it's
- 2:00not a very long drive. It's about 130 mi
- 2:02and probably takes uh 2 hours, 2 and 1
- 2:05half hours depending on traffic. And
- 2:08thankfully today when we're driving,
- 2:10it's not that bad. There's definitely a
- 2:13lot of traffic on the road, but again,
- 2:15no major accidents or anything like
- 2:16that. And as you can see, it's another
- 2:19really beautiful drive. You're going
- 2:21through the mountains. You're going on
- 2:24winding roads and basically just kind of
- 2:27rolling into Sacramento. And we are very
- 2:30excited to be here. I've never been. And
- 2:33the first thing we want to check out is
- 2:34the old town area of Sacramento. A lot
- 2:37of people have told me to check this out
- 2:39and I can definitely see why. The first
- 2:42thing I noticed is that there's wood
- 2:43planks on the sidewalks. So, it's
- 2:46definitely got that kind of old vibe to
- 2:49it, which I think is pretty cool. And
- 2:51plus, all of the shops on here, they're
- 2:54all really interesting and unique.
- 2:56There's a bunch of pubs, there's a bunch
- 2:57of little shops you can go in and get,
- 3:00you know, collectibles or clothing or
- 3:02whatever. And none of it feels very
- 3:03corporate at all. And so, we popped into
- 3:06a pub and played a couple rounds of
- 3:09pool, had some good food. So, that was
- 3:11really neat visiting that. And uh as
- 3:13you'll see, we'll be back a little bit
- 3:15later, but we don't want to stay out too
- 3:17late because tomorrow is the first day
- 3:19of the Fire and Ice Retro Gaming Expo.
- 3:22And so, that's going to be a big day.
- 3:25So, we want to be well rested for that.
- 3:28Now, I've been talking about Sacramento
- 3:29up to this point, but really this expo
- 3:32is actually held in a smaller town just
- 3:34outside of Sacramento called Roseville.
- 3:37And so it's important to know that this
- 3:39is the first year for this particular
- 3:40expo in this location. The thing is that
- 3:44the organizers of this particular expo
- 3:46have worked with the Sack Gamers Expo in
- 3:49Sacramento before, but they own a store
- 3:52in this area, so they wanted to have an
- 3:54expo in this particular city as well.
- 3:56Hopefully that makes sense. So, I don't
- 3:58want there to be any confusion here, but
- 4:00you know, for for an outsider like
- 4:02myself, they're so close together that
- 4:05they're it makes sense that they would
- 4:07kind of team up. And this is a massive
- 4:10convention center. And I got to be
- 4:12honest with you, it's probably a little
- 4:14bit too big for their first year. When I
- 4:16first walked into this, it was a bunch
- 4:19of kind of empty spaces around
- 4:22everything in the center there. But the
- 4:25vendor section of this now, while it was
- 4:28smaller than most expose I've been to,
- 4:30they had really good stuff here. And
- 4:33that's what's most important, right? You
- 4:35you don't want to go to an expo and just
- 4:36see a bunch of really common stuff you
- 4:37can just kind of get anywhere. You go to
- 4:39these expose cuz you want to be
- 4:41surprised. You want to be blown away.
- 4:43You want to see stuff that you can't get
- 4:44anywhere else. And there were several
- 4:46booths that had a lot of uncommon games,
- 4:49specifically what I was looking for.
- 4:51First, I was looking for like some PS4
- 4:52games and some Switch games. Found a
- 4:54bunch. And again, I'm going to show you
- 4:56those at the end of this. And that is
- 4:59something I'm seeing at these expos. A
- 5:01lot of interest buying, selling, trading
- 5:04last gen games, PlayStation 4, Xbox One,
- 5:07and Switch. Could it be because those
- 5:10games are on the disc, you could
- 5:11actually own them physically forever?
- 5:15Could be. There was this guy off in the
- 5:17corner that was kind of blowing my mind
- 5:19a little bit. He's a motion capture
- 5:22artist using cheap off-the-shelf
- 5:25components to do real-time motion
- 5:27capture. You see it right here with an
- 5:28iPhone and some sensors on his arms and
- 5:31legs and a laptop. And he's doing this
- 5:33in real time. I thought this was so
- 5:35cool. I'd love to mess around with this.
- 5:38I mean, you can do all sorts of really
- 5:39cool stuff in VR and in video games and
- 5:41movies with this. So, yeah. Check out
- 5:44his website here if you're interested in
- 5:46this. I thought it was pretty cool. This
- 5:48expo brought in a bunch of voice actors
- 5:49from games that we've all played like
- 5:51Kingdom Hearts, uh, Street Fighter,
- 5:53Castlevania, Twisted Metal, Sonic
- 5:56Adventure, and there was a big reunion
- 5:59of voice actors that all starred in a
- 6:02couple of the Silent Hill games. And so
- 6:04they were signing things and talking to
- 6:06fans. It was pretty cool. But my
- 6:08impression of this is that while it was
- 6:10probably a little bit too big of a venue
- 6:13for their first year, it was well
- 6:15attended. I mean, it really was. I was
- 6:17kind of blown away how many people were
- 6:20just here the entire time. I did notice
- 6:23that on the second day things were
- 6:25noticeably quieter, which is to be
- 6:26expected, right? I think a lot of people
- 6:28who go to an expo, one day is enough.
- 6:30So, you go the first day, you buy the
- 6:32games that you want, you see the stuff
- 6:34that you want, there's not a lot of
- 6:35reason to go back the second day. And we
- 6:38had a panel at 11:00 a.m. and thankfully
- 6:41it was well attended. You kind of worry
- 6:43about that sort of stuff if your panel
- 6:44is on the second day and you're like,
- 6:46"Is anybody going to go? Does anybody
- 6:48care?" But yeah, it was really cool
- 6:49actually. Uh, you know, I got asked a
- 6:51bunch of good questions about YouTube
- 6:53and video games and music and collecting
- 6:55and all that sort of stuff. So, you
- 6:57know, it's always a good time hanging
- 6:58with people at these panels.
- 7:01And I've said it before, but the second
- 7:02day of an expo, you know, on Sunday is
- 7:05is the perfect time to do one more round
- 7:08of looking for video games, looking for
- 7:10those deals. None of these vendors want
- 7:13to take this stuff home, right? They all
- 7:15bring it there with the intention of
- 7:17selling it. And so that's the day, if
- 7:19you want a reason to go on the second
- 7:21day, that's the reason you go there to
- 7:23trade and to look for deals. And like I
- 7:26said, I found a bunch of Switch games
- 7:28I'd never heard of before. So yeah,
- 7:30you're going to see those at the end of
- 7:32this video. Another fun thing about this
- 7:34was seeing this expo through the eyes of
- 7:36my buddy Scott, who has never been to a
- 7:39retro gaming before. And so, you know, I
- 7:41was kind of curious to see what he would
- 7:43think. And it was really fun to see him
- 7:46getting excited about retro video games
- 7:49because, you know, I I would probably
- 7:51call him more of a casual gamer. He
- 7:53plays Call of Duty, plays sports games,
- 7:55you know, stuff like that, but he's not
- 7:56like obsessed like I am.
- 8:00And I really appreciate that. So, you
- 8:02know, it was interesting cuz while he
- 8:05was there, he actually bought the first,
- 8:08you know, like retro physical retro
- 8:10cartridge games that he had as a kid.
- 8:12And I could see that look in his eyes
- 8:14how excited he was. And he immediately
- 8:16was like, "Okay, how do I get these
- 8:18connected to my television?" I mean, he
- 8:21went through all of the steps of video
- 8:24game addiction all within a weekend. It
- 8:26was pretty funny to watch. He also met
- 8:28up with his brother who lives in Oakland
- 8:30who had never been to an expo. And the
- 8:32two of them again over at these these
- 8:35free-to-play areas were really diving
- 8:38in, you know, jumping in on consoles
- 8:40that they grew up with, but also
- 8:42checking out machines that they've never
- 8:44seen before. So, that was really cool
- 8:47seeing that through their eyes because,
- 8:48you know, I I go to expos all the time
- 8:50now. And so, I'm not jaded, but I've
- 8:53also seen a lot. And so it was really
- 8:55funny and cool to see those two really
- 8:58getting excited. Another thing that
- 9:00happened is that all weekend long people
- 9:03came up to me and they kept mentioning
- 9:05that we need to check out this place
- 9:06called the cave here in Roseville. You
- 9:10know, check out the cave. You're going
- 9:11to love it. I heard that so many times.
- 9:14And I got to be honest with you, having
- 9:16spent some time visiting to other retro
- 9:18gaming stores and now spending an entire
- 9:21weekend at an expo, I was like I was
- 9:23like, really? Is it going to be worth
- 9:25it? Well, here's the thing. We realized
- 9:29that it was pretty close to our hotel.
- 9:31And so on the way back from the expo, we
- 9:34decided to check out the cave. And I got
- 9:37to be honest with you, this store is
- 9:39amazing.
- 9:41Yeah. Yes. They've got a decent video
- 9:43game selection, but then they have an
- 9:46entire room dedicated to music and vinyl
- 9:49records, and another one to vintage
- 9:52clothing and concert shirts, and then
- 9:55another one dedicated to movies, and
- 9:57then another room dedicated to action
- 9:59figures and collectibles. This place is
- 10:02massive. It's funny because both Rebecca
- 10:06and Scott said that this was their
- 10:08favorite place of the entire trip. We
- 10:11walked around there for quite a while.
- 10:14And uh I got to be honest, it's hard to
- 10:16disagree with them. There was so much
- 10:18stuff here. Everywhere you looked, there
- 10:21was something cool and weird and awesome
- 10:24that you've just never seen before. Me
- 10:27personally, the rock and metal vinyl
- 10:29section was probably the largest I've
- 10:32ever seen. I mean, it just went on and
- 10:35on and on. You know, most record stores
- 10:38will have a couple, you know, couple
- 10:41areas for metal. You know, sure, you
- 10:44know, you can find stuff there, but not
- 10:45like this. Oh my god, it just it went on
- 10:48and on and on. It was amazing. And you
- 10:50want to hear something funny that they
- 10:51do? It's weird because it seems like on
- 10:55purpose they throw in non-metal stuff or
- 11:00non genre specific stuff into each
- 11:03section almost to get you to look at
- 11:06something that you might otherwise not.
- 11:08So for instance, you'll be digging
- 11:10through, you know, metal and then all of
- 11:11a sudden a random Ariana Grande album
- 11:14will be there. You're like, you know,
- 11:15next to some like death metal and you're
- 11:17just like, what what is this doing here?
- 11:19But it's not just isolated. Like it's
- 11:21almost intentional. I'm not entirely
- 11:24sure what's going on here. So, it's
- 11:26pretty funny actually because you may
- 11:29actually bump into something and, you
- 11:31know, just be like, "Okay." I mean, I
- 11:33didn't buy an Ariana Grande album, but
- 11:36it was kind of cool to see cuz it
- 11:37happened all throughout this. So, I
- 11:39wonder if they do it intentionally.
- 11:41Another thing that happened while we're
- 11:43in this area is that Scott and his
- 11:45brother went to a baseball game. When
- 11:47originally he came up to me, he's like,
- 11:49"Dude, we're going to go check out this
- 11:50baseball game. Do you want to come?" I
- 11:51was like, "Oh man, I got some other
- 11:52stuff I want to do." But he was pumped
- 11:54because I guess the Cleveland Guardians
- 11:56and the Athletics were playing and it
- 12:00was in the AAA park in Sacramento and he
- 12:03was all excited because I guess it's
- 12:04like bobblehead giveaway day. And again,
- 12:08I don't know anything about baseball,
- 12:09but I could see it in their eyes that
- 12:11they were so pumped for this. And so,
- 12:14they went to this baseball game. And uh
- 12:16yeah, that was a really cool little
- 12:17moment for them as well. And then the
- 12:19next part of this journey is going to be
- 12:21us heading over to the Pacific Coast and
- 12:23winding our way up Highway 101, taking
- 12:26in some beautiful scenery in the last
- 12:29part of this road trip. But I need to
- 12:32share with you some of the pickups I
- 12:34got, including these random Switch
- 12:36games.
- 12:38None of these I had heard of before.
- 12:40It's amazing to me how many games came
- 12:43out on Switch and how many of them
- 12:45actually got a physical copy. So, at
- 12:48this point, I haven't actually played a
- 12:50lot of these yet. So, I don't really
- 12:53have a deep, you know, review of any of
- 12:56them, unfortunately. But, I will in a
- 12:58future video. But I want to show you
- 12:59some of the things that I got, including
- 13:01a random PSP game. You guys know that
- 13:03I'm going for a complete North America
- 13:05collection, and I did not have this one
- 13:08where it has this cardboard case over it
- 13:09here for Kingdom Hearts. So, I saw this
- 13:12great condition, cheap games. So, I
- 13:14picked this up at the expo was a table
- 13:17for Audacity Games. This is the ex
- 13:20Activision developers that have in
- 13:23recent years been making new games for
- 13:25the Atari 2600. And this is their latest
- 13:28one called Casey's Gold. And I saw this
- 13:30and I was like, I you know, I mean, I
- 13:32love my Atari 2600 and new games for it
- 13:35I have to pick up. And uh again, I
- 13:37haven't played this yet, but I'm looking
- 13:38forward to it. I'll cover it in a future
- 13:40video with with Reggie when I, you know,
- 13:42pickups with him. A fan came up to me
- 13:45and gave me this. I guess it's a bootleg
- 13:48MVS game. I had to tell him though, I
- 13:50was like, "Dude, I don't have this Neo
- 13:53Geo console in my game room. can't
- 13:54actually play this, but he said, "Don't
- 13:57worry about it. It's a bootleg. It's not
- 13:59very expensive." So, he just wanted me
- 14:01to have it, which okay, that's cool.
- 14:04Somebody recommended I check this out.
- 14:05It's called Pressure Overdrive. And this
- 14:08is kind of like a special edition of it
- 14:10here. And the way they described it is a
- 14:13top-down racing driving game, but it
- 14:16plays more like a shooter. So, yes, you
- 14:19do control the car, but you are shooting
- 14:22the bad guys and you're taking jumps and
- 14:23stuff. So, it sounded pretty interesting
- 14:25and so curious to check this out and
- 14:28play more of it. A fan of my channel
- 14:30gave me this. It is the soundtrack to
- 14:33Fatal Fury on vinyl.
- 14:36I love vinyl and I love video game
- 14:38music, so this is very cool. Thank you
- 14:40so much. And then lately, I've been
- 14:43buying some VHS movies and concerts.
- 14:46specifically my buddy Jesse. He gave me
- 14:50a working VHS player for my game room.
- 14:54And I got to be honest with you, I
- 14:55haven't thought about VHS in a long
- 14:57time, but connecting it to a CRT, it
- 15:00does still look pretty good. And so,
- 15:02I've been kind of on the hunt for, you
- 15:05know, random stuff here and there to
- 15:07play on my VHS and uh my VCR. So, that's
- 15:11what these are for. And I mentioned that
- 15:13the cave sells action figures and it was
- 15:15hard to walk out of there without at
- 15:17least buying a couple of them. I saw
- 15:19this one for Planet Terror. I love that
- 15:22movie. And this is the one where her leg
- 15:26detaches and she actually has a machine
- 15:28gun. I thought that was pretty cool, so
- 15:31I had to pick that one up as well as
- 15:33another one for Iron Maiden. There's so
- 15:36many cool Iron Maiden action figures out
- 15:38there and Number of the Beast is one of
- 15:40my favorite albums from the band. So, of
- 15:42course, that's going in the game room as
- 15:44well. And so, that guys is part two of
- 15:46the road trip going through Oregon,
- 15:51California, and Nevada. And coming up,
- 15:54we are going to be rounding it out on
- 15:57the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 101.
- 16:01It's going to be beautiful. And in
- 16:03there, we're going to go up to Kuzbay.
- 16:05We're going to check out another game
- 16:06store as well as a music store. We're
- 16:08going to do a bunch of sightseeing along
- 16:10the way. Scott's going to ride a UTV for
- 16:13a while. Uh I'm going to check out some
- 16:15local stuff. It's going to be pretty
- 16:17cool. And then we're going to end in
- 16:18Portland, Oregon, over 2,000 miles. It's
- 16:22been a good road trip and it ends on a
- 16:25high note. So, you're definitely going
- 16:27to want to be subscribed because that
- 16:29part three is going to be coming very
- 16:31soon. All right, guys. Well, thank you
- 16:33very much for watching. Thank you for
- 16:34subscribing and take care.
