Risk and Uncertainty Explained — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00hi there let's take a quick look at two
- 0:02related and important concepts in
- 0:05business
- 0:06risk and uncertainty
- 0:10risk is a big issue for businesses large
- 0:12and small
- 0:14and a whole industry is devoted to
- 0:15what's known as risk management trying
- 0:17to mitigate or reduce the potential
- 0:20damage from risk
- 0:21and often risk is associated with the
- 0:24concept of uncertainty so this video is
- 0:25really just here to help explain the
- 0:28subtle difference between the two
- 0:30well what do we mean by risk well it's
- 0:32the possibility or probability that
- 0:35things don't happen as you wish that
- 0:38they would bad things happen to the
- 0:39business planned actions decisions don't
- 0:42work
- 0:43things go wrong in business
- 0:45and it's a major issue for business is
- 0:47risk
- 0:49uncertainty is a slightly more subtle
- 0:51concept it's the fact that in life as in
- 0:53business
- 0:54or in business as in life nothing
- 0:57is certain you can't be sure about the
- 1:00effect of your decisions whether they
- 1:02will be successful or not because there
- 1:03are factors that in most cases are
- 1:06outside of your control so for example
- 1:08the uncertainty about what might happen
- 1:10if you launch a new product or change
- 1:12the price of a product well we don't
- 1:14know do we until until we try it
- 1:16um so that's the concept of uncertainty
- 1:18a different concept to risk
- 1:21well
- 1:22let's give you a few examples of risk i
- 1:24mentioned that it's a major issue for uh
- 1:27businesses actually in particular large
- 1:29businesses because
- 1:30the issue with risk
- 1:32is that it has the potential to not just
- 1:34damage the business but to threaten the
- 1:36survival
- 1:37of a business
- 1:39so right at the top that i've put
- 1:40perhaps one of the biggest risks that
- 1:42all businesses face which is that of
- 1:44cyber security and fraud the need to
- 1:47maintain uh protection over sensitive uh
- 1:50particularly for example customer data a
- 1:51massive issue the threats to businesses
- 1:54and their systems from cybercrime are
- 1:57ever present and growing similarly the
- 1:59whole issue around the need for
- 2:01businesses to operate in an
- 2:03environmentally sensitive and friendly
- 2:05way and the costs and consequences of
- 2:07damaging the environment that's a major
- 2:09risk
- 2:11for lots of businesses but obviously for
- 2:12particular
- 2:14sectors
- 2:15lots of businesses are increasingly
- 2:17facing issues around their supply chain
- 2:19and what i've listed their shocks to the
- 2:21supply chain so for example uh i don't
- 2:23know a sudden a change in the
- 2:25availability of containers
- 2:28supplies no longer arriving on time when
- 2:31you had anticipated a particular lead
- 2:33time
- 2:34so supply chain supply chain shocks are
- 2:36a big issue so the whole issue of supply
- 2:38chain management is an attempt
- 2:40to manage the risks associated with that
- 2:43and
- 2:44the other source of risk i guess is just
- 2:46to think about what else is out there in
- 2:48the external environment so sudden
- 2:50changes or major changes to regulation
- 2:53business regulation and legislation can
- 2:56be a risk to business as of course can
- 2:58clearly
- 2:59shocks to the economic system economic
- 3:01conditions
- 3:04what about uncertainty well uncertainty
- 3:06as i say is a slightly different concept
- 3:07here because in business managers have
- 3:10to deal with uncertainty all the time
- 3:12it's the unknowns isn't it
- 3:14and you have to live with it in business
- 3:16try to do all you can to to manage it
- 3:19and to be as well informed as possible
- 3:21so for example using market research as
- 3:23a means of reducing uncertainty
- 3:26but the kind of uncertainties that exist
- 3:27really relate to business decisions
- 3:29actions so for example how would the
- 3:32market respond if you decided to change
- 3:34your marketing mix in some way perhaps
- 3:37increase your price what would the
- 3:38effect be so you'd be thinking about
- 3:40uh price elasticity of demand and also
- 3:43market research to understand how
- 3:44consumers might respond
- 3:46if you're a new business how likely is
- 3:48it or what is it what's the uncertainty
- 3:50that you may be able to achieve what you
- 3:51believe your breakeven output to be a
- 3:54really key
- 3:55concept
- 3:56if you're choosing a new supplier how
- 3:59likely is it
- 4:00that they will be able to deliver on
- 4:01time to the right quality and prove to
- 4:03be a reliable partner
- 4:05of the business and if you think about
- 4:07human resource management and
- 4:08uncertainty at the start of each year
- 4:10for many businesses particularly
- 4:12labor-intensive businesses is
- 4:15whether you'll be able to retain
- 4:17the right number of skilled
- 4:20and experienced employees so you don't
- 4:22know do you you don't know how many
- 4:23employees are going to leave you might
- 4:25have some information about labour
- 4:26turnover for yourself and the industry
- 4:28but it's an uncertainty and that's the
- 4:30point about uncertainty businesses just
- 4:32have to live with it and try to try to
- 4:34do the best they can
- 4:36to manage it
- 4:37well there we go hopefully that's useful
- 4:39that's just a brief introduction to
- 4:41these two important concepts risk
- 4:44and uncertainty
- 5:05you
